Man rapes six-year-old daughter of his girlfriend An 18-year-old man was arrested on a charge of rape after alleging attacking and sexually assaulting a relative's minor girlfriend on Saturday. The suspect went looking for a place to sleep at the relatives ghetto in Mondesa, Independence street.

When the suspect arrived at the relatives, only the relatives' girlfriend (17) was present. The girlfriend reportedly agreed to allow the suspect to sleep in the ghetto only for the night. It is further alleged that the suspect attacked and raped the girlfriend and left the ghetto.

Heinrich Hafeni to build PPRC to address control first hotel in Mondesa over car guards

Swakopmund entrepreneur Heinrich Hafeni, Executive Chairman and Founder of the Hafeni Tourism Group, wishes to develop a hotel and traditional restaurant in Mondesa. It will be the first hotel to be constructed in the suburb Mondesa.

Hafeni's newest tourism venture was discussed at the recent Town Council meeting. Hafeni made an application regarding this in February this year. Town Council decided to sell a portion of land measuring about 3 000 square meters to Hafeni – a price is still to be determined.

In his initial application Hafeni gives a brief history of his career as an entrepreneur and what he achieved since he started his journey as a business person in 2011. “I had no experience and no networks, I have worked very hard to build a name for myself,” he wrote in the application. He started Hafeni Tours by renting taxis in the early

stages and operated from his grandfather's house which was his admin office.

Today the Hafeni brand is known locally as well as internationally. The Hafeni Tourism Group is the umbrella company of two subsidiaries: Hafeni Tours and Travel and Hafeni Cultural Village and Traditional Restaurant.

In the application he requested Council for a portion of land to develop a restaurant, which will constitute the first phase of the development. The second phase will be the hotel known as “Hafeni Mondesa Hotel.”

“Through this process we would like to also create a

centre/academy that will equip young people in the community with leadership and entrepreneurship skills as part of our community social responsibility which (I) am very passionate about,” he wrote.

“There is still quite a process to follow, before we can start,” Hafeni said to namib times. Once he acquires the piece of land and the property has been rezoned, the development can commence. “I hope that construction will start early next year or as soon as possible of course,” he said. “It is a historical transaction as it is something that has never been done before,” he continued.

It has been reported that on Thursday afternoon, while being in the care of the boyfriend at their home in Tutaleni in Walvis Bay, the suspect sent the two other children, also present at the house, to the shop. The suspect then raped the girl. The girl claims that it had not been the first time that it has occurred. The matter was reported on Friday, and the suspect was arrested.

Investigations now look into the matter to ascertain whether the victim has been raped more than once by the suspect.

Every Tom, Dick and Harry in Swakopmund is a car guard nowadays. Most so-called car guards are in fact not car guards – they wear a reflective jacket and pretend to look after cars parked in town for money.

This issue was once again one of the main discussion points during the recent meeting of the Police Public Relations Committee (PPRC). At the same meeting, it was also understood that Swakopmund might soon get a parking meter system.

Car guards in Swakopmund have been a bone of contention for at least a decade. The topic was once again discussed during the recent PPRC meeting, as certain car guards are continuously harassing car owners in town. They are often under the influence of alcohol or other substances. They target women walking alone.

Instead of rendering a service to the community, they are a nuisance.

“It is a simple issue.

How long must this go on before something is being done?” asked Swakopmund resident

Car guards do not only harass locals but tourists as well, which is damaging to Swakopmund's image as a tourist destination.

“How long still must we tolerate this? It is an old problem but nothing is being done,” van Ginkel said. Adding: “there is no control over car guards and 99.9 % are not car guards. They put on a reflective vest and pretend to be a car guard.”

Dewald Swart from the Swakopmund Neighborhood Watch (SNW) added that there was an incident only a few days before where a certain car guard kicked a vehicle for no apparent reason. The car guard was taken to the police station and was back on the street only two hours later continuing with his business. “After 17:00 everybody puts on a reflective jacket and

pretends to be a car guard in town,” Swart continued.

Anett Kötting, Chairperson of the PPRC, said the committee will draft an official letter to the municipality in the hope of finding an amicable solution.

Swakopmund Councillor Kleopas Ngwena stood up and said that a solution might be on the horizon. “An investor has recently made a presentation to the Management Committee to introduce a parking meter system. If such a system is in operation we might have control over car guards,” he said.

Many businesses in Swakopmund are fed up with car guards harassing their clients. “Our hands are tied and there is nothing we can do.

Our clients complain all the time,” one business person said to namib times after the meeting.

It's that time of the year again: The 32nd Swakopmund carnival, also known as KÜSKA, kicked off with the annual “Narrenwecker” on Saturday. As usual the Narrenwecker is the wake-up call for Jokers/Jesters and is held in the main road. There was ample live music, food, drinks and a short program giving guests an indication on what they expect from this year's KÜSKA. The slogan for this year's carnival is “ACH WIE GUT DAS NIEMAND WEISS”. Translated into English it means “How glad I am that no one knows…”.

The next event is the Prinzenball (Royal Ball) which will take place on Friday, 16 June in the Haus der Jugend. During this evening the new KÜSKA Prince and Princess will be presented and the Swakopmund city council will symbolically hand over the key of the town to the royal couple. The carnival will continue with the KÜSKIKA (17 June), followed by the International Evening (20 June), Mixed Evening (21 June) and German Evening (22 June). Tickets for these evenings are available at HAPPY PETS. On Friday, 23 June, the carnival continues in the hall of the SFC with the Fancy-Dress-Party (Maskenball). Tickets are available at the doors and to dress-up is compulsory. Entrance will only be allowed from the age of 18 years and identification documents must be provided.

As usual the carnival ends with the ever popular float procession (Umzug) through Swakopmund on 24 June, followed by the Kehraus in the SFC hall.

No bail for baby dumping suspect Piquet Jacobs

Marine Kooper (23), mother of the abandoned baby girl found in a suitcase next to the railway line in Narraville on 19 May made her first appearance before Magistrate Vicky Nicolaidis on Friday. Kooper was refused bail and remains in custody.

Kooper was arrested on Wednesday in Swakopmund following a tip-off received from the public. She was initially charged with child abandonment and neglect, but the charge was changed to attempted murder in conjunction with the provisions of the Domestic Violence Act. A trusted source close to the investigation has suggested that police are looking into the suspects social media page for details of what lead to the incident. Due to the serious nature of the offence, the state strongly opposed bail.

A fourteen-year-old appeared on a charge of theft. The matter was postponed to 7 June for juvenile pre-community service.

The accused was released in the care of a guardian.

Shalom Ngesheya (37) appeared on a charge of driving with an excessive bloodalcohol level. The matter was postponed to 14 September for further investigation.

The accused remains in custody.

Two persons were killed during a horrific car accident on the B2 highway between Usakos and Arandis on Thursday morning. One of the deceased was identified as 28-year old Christopher Leroy Van Wyk. The second deceased is yet to be identified.

According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the two victims were travelling in a white City Golf (N 175694 W) from Usakos towards Arandis. It is alleged that about 20 kilometers from Usakos on a gentle curve in the road, the driver lost control of the vehicle resulting in the sedan colliding with an oncoming Nissan Note (NWB 1256 P). In the Nissan Note was one occupant, the driver Mr. Wilhelm Smith.

The force of the collision resulted in the two male occupants of the City Golf flung out of the vehicle. Both died on the spot. The driver of the Nissan Note sustained minor injuries. ¡The police confirmed a charge of culpable homicide is now investigated against the driver of a vehicle that was involved in an accident on the Swakopmund-Henties Bay road on 1 May this year.

According to Iikuyu, one person passed away in hospital on Saturday after he was involved in a car accident on the road between Henties Bay and Swakopmund on that day.

The driver, who was charged with reckless and or negligent driving and driving without a license, is facing an additional charge of culpable homicide. During this incident a GMW pick-up (N 122795 S) with 19 occupants, including the driver, was travelling from Henties Bay in the direction of Swakopmund, when the driver lost control over the vehicle and the vehicle overturned. The accident happened at about 20:25 about four kilometers from Henties Bay. The occupants were returning from a soccer tournament at Henties Bay. One of the passengers, Alexander Gaeseb (48) was seriously injured and was admitted to the Cottage Hospital in Swakopmund. Gaeseb passed away on Saturday at about 14:00. The rest of the occupants have in the meantime been released from the various hospitals where they were treated.

Women enduring 20 years of abuse by husband turns to namib times in sheer desperacy

A Swakopmund resident claims to have been a victim of domestic violence for over 20 years. She has had enough of the verbal and emotional abuse from her husband. The 40 yearold fears for her life now, and even though she approached social workers and the police nothing changed.

The 40 year old victim contacted the office of the namib times as a last resort, as she feels helpless.

She wishes to remain anonymous as she fears reprisal and further abuse by her husband of over 20 years.

“I am a person who loves people. I am a giver and since I gave my life to the Lord, I have been helping the needy and have shared what I have with the less privileged. This has been a problem for my husband,” she explained.

Her husband took all her belongings. “I feel I am being deprived of what we (my husband and I) have worked for as a couple. Over the years I sacrificed a lot, including my job, to help him with his business,” said the angry

mother of three.

“The main reason why my husband is abusing me emotionally is due to our differences in our religious beliefs,” she said. After enduring years of hardships, pain and suffering, she called the namib times office. namib times met her at a guest house in Swakopmund. “I had to leave the house as I could not take it anymore. I am afraid to go back home,” she said.

The visibly shaken mother added that the abuse has left her depressed and constant high blood pressure.

“I approached social workers and also went to the police. The police officers said all they would do is warn my husband,” she said.

But why would she endure so many years of pain? “I kept pushing on because I never

wanted our children to grow up in a broken home. I tolerated all the verbal and emotional abuse for the sake of our children and the love I had for my husband,” she said.

That is what prevented her from filing for divorce. She “is tired with her husband's behaviour.”

The alleged victim further said her husband had her arrested twice recently as he “claims I am mentally challenged.” “I am crying out for help from the women and child protection unit or the ministry of gender equality and child welfare to intervene. I do not want my case to turn into a suicide or murder case due to what I have been through all these years,” she said.

The victim encourages women to speak out

against domestic violence and seek help before it is too late.

Attempts of reaching the husband for comment were unfruitful.

Gender based violence

is one of the greatest human rights challenges faced by women in Namibia. According to a survey by the Legal Assistance Centre (LAC) more than one-

fifth of all violent crime in Namibia occurs within the context of domestic relationships.

Men, being the main perpetrators commit about 93% of domes-

tic violent crimes reported to the police. Many cases of domestic violence are not reported as victims fear for reprisal.

Youth Unemployment Standard Bank committed to development of Namibia a National Crisis: Skills Mapping needed

The Minister of Presidential Affairs, Frans Kapofi, recently urged that banking should go beyond just providing financial services, but must also be vested in the lives of disadvantaged Namibians who live in abject poverty, due to unemployment and lack of adequate housing.

The recently released preliminary figures from the Fourth National Labour Force Survey by the Namibian

Statistics Agency (NSA) paint a very worrying picture for young Namibians.

The NSA has found that youth unemployment has risen from 39% in 2014 to a high 43.4% in 2016. In numerical terms a 4.5% increase does not seem a lot, but when you convert that 4.5% or the 43.4% into the impact unemployment has on youth in Namibia the numbers are bleak. At 43.4%, Namibia is dangerously close to every second young person being unemployed. When one further considers that youth represent the largest demographic in Namibia and are supposed to be the most active demographic economically then it is no surprise to note the economic hardships facing the country. All this comes at a time when the Geingob Administration has built its term around alleviating poverty.

How does one alleviate poverty when the unemployment rate amongst the biggest national demographic– youth - is increasing d u r i n g t h e “Harambee Period”?

This should serve as a reminder and wake up call to our policy and decision makers that either the policies are not working or alternatively, they have been misdirected.

Addressing unemployment should serve as the basis for reducing poverty, every other initiative should come secondary. It is no longer justifiable for Namibian institutions of higher learning to produce graduates who do not have skills capable of being absorbed within the

Namibian labour market. The amount of graduates that sit without work or under-employed should teach our institutions of higher learning that qualifications and skills need to tailored to the Namibian job market. It is for this reason that the DTA of Namibia once again reiterates that it is high time that a National Skills Mapping Study was done. Our policies cannot be developed in isolation, but should be guided by the existing skills amongst youth and identifying areas within the labour market where youth need to be skilled and trained.

In the era of public p r i v a t e p a r t n e rships, a National Skills Mapping Study can be jointly run by the two ministries responsible for education, institutions of higher learning (inclusive of vocational centres), the private business sector and civil society. These stakeholders all have a vested interest in ensuring that Namibian education sector produces not only skilled qualified youth, but also employable youth.

Further reiterating that all banks should actively participate in creating development initiatives for Namibia as a whole, Kapofi made the remarks during the recent ground-breaking ceremony for the new Standard Bank Head Office, while speaking on behalf of His Excellency President Hage Geingob.

This is a call that Standard Bank has been working hard to heed through its various initiatives that are aimed at the socioeconomic development of the country, a fact Kapofi acknowledged during his speech.

“During 2016, Standard Bank made significant strides towards positioning itself as a key player in shaping Namibia's investment landscape as the national agenda shifted towards investment driven growth. Within the infrastructure sector alone, the Bank extended bridge financing to the National Oil Storage in Walvis Bay, along with the newly constructed 77on-Independence Complex in Windhoek,” Kapofi noted.

He added that with a workforce of over 1 700 employees, the Bank's roots are deeply entrenched into the fabric of the Namibian society, and strongly urged that banking services should be made accessible to all Namibians in a cost effective way in order to take our inhabitants out of poverty and into financial prosperity. He further commended Standard Bank for being a financial institution strongly committed to this cause.

Highlighting all the work that Standard Bank has done towards creating developmental initiatives for Namibia, the Bank's Acting Head of Marketing Sigrid Tjijorokisa pointed out some of the initiatives carried out by the bank to further that cause.

“We provided funding facilities for a wide-range of public and private sector entities involved in the mining and metals, as well as, power and infrastructure industries, such as Debmarine Namibia and the Zimbabwe Power Corporation (ZPC). Standard Bank also partnered with the Namibian government in hedging the coupon obligations within government's Eurobond portfolio,” Tjijorokisa noted.

She stressed that fostering constructive relationship with the Namibian government was a key priority in 2016 for the bank.

As such, Standard Bank endeavoured to assist the State in encouraging investment and job creation by supporting the government in launching the first annual 'Invest in Namibia International Investment Conference'.

In addition to co-hosting the 'Invest in Namibia International Investment Conference' in November 2016, the Bank also cohosted the second annual Public Private Partnership (PPP) Conference. This conference was aimed to identify and reiterate durable solutions that could harness the PPP framework in financing key infrastructure projects and initiatives in the provision of energy, affordable housing and the transport sector,” Tjijorokisa said.

On the Corporate Social Investment (CSI) front, Standard Bank proved that it is a financial institution with Namibia's people at heart with the various initiatives it supported.

“At the heart of our Bank lies the drive support and help uplift the communities and economies of the environment in which we operate, and we have done this by pledging 1 percent of our net profit after tax to CSI initiatives. This contribution by the Bank is four times more than what is required by the Financial Services Charter,” she explained. In 2016, Standard Bank contributed an impressive N$4.7 million to CSI. Of this, N$2-million went towards health, wellness and poverty alleviation projects; N$724 000 was spent on entrepreneurship development, N$485 000 was donated to drought relief efforts and N$744 000 was contributed towards the Bank's CSI fundraising Buy-a-Brick initiative.

“The bar was raised even higher when our Buy-a-Brick initiative resulted in the construction of 44 new brick houses in Rehoboth benefiting no-and-low income communities who previously lived in shacks. A total of N$1.4-million was donated to the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia last year to build these brick houses,” she noted.Through these, and many more, Standard Bank has illustrated that it is committed to not only creating, but also partnering with government and other institutions for the betterment of Namibia as a whole. Voted the Best Investment Bank in the country, Best Emerging Markets Bank and the Best Sub Custodian Bank in Namibia last year, Tjijorokisa concluded that the Bank is steadfast in its resolve to contribute even more to the country's socio-economic development this year.

Standard Bank's Acting Head of Marketing this week stressed that the Bank has heeded Minister of Presidential Affairs Frans Kapofi's call to create development initiatives for Namibia.

Mother of abandoned baby apprehended Container island nears completion The Namibian ports authority (Namport) hosts a public information session at the Mission to Seafarers at Walvis Bay next Wednesday to update interested parties on progress with regard to the construction of the container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay. The container terminal island is constructed by Chinese construction giant China Harbour and Engineering Company (CHEC) and the groundbreaking of the project was on 19 May 2014. The island is 40 hectares in size and upon completion of the civil works, a state of the art container terminal will be constructed and equipment installed which will boost the port of Walvis Bay's current capacity of 350 000 twenty foot equivalent units (TEU's) per annum to 750 000 TEU's. The cost of the project is N$4 billion of which Namport had to seek financing of N$3 billion, according to project details.

Elderly Swakopmund man on charge of culpable homicide after killing pedestrian and injuring two others in accident 69 Year-old Swakopmund resident allegedly with his vehicle knocked over two pedestrians and a cyclist on Tuesday evening whilst travelling from DRC towards Mondesa. All three victims were critically injured, but one of the injured, a young woman, passed away shortly after arrival at hospital. The driver has been charged with culpable homicide, drunken driving and reckless and or negligent driving.

The mother of the newborn baby girl, who was dumped in the bushes next to the railway line in Narraville on Friday morning, has been identified and arrested on Wednesday afternoon in Swakopmund after a member of the public tipped off police.

Four vehicles involved in accident between Swakopmund towards Two killed in crash near B2 - Arandis

Spitzkoppe turn-off Two people were killed instantly in a side impact collision between two vehicles, a sedan and a hatchback, near the turn-off to Henties Bay on the B2 near the Spitzkoppe yesterday morning. The impact of the crash caused both occupants of the sedan to be flung from the vehicle. They were killed. The only occupant of the hatch-back was the driver who sustained injuries. One of the vehicles broke in half as a result of the crash.

Municipal truck stolen and abandoned A municipal truck was stolen on Saturday morning at approximately 05:00, the incident was reported to the police shortly after. The truck was then found abandoned at Afrodite Beach hours later. The suspect(s) are believed to have stolen the truck and fled with the truck, mowing down part of the pole fencing along 18th street east before abandoning the truck where it was driven into the sand and got stuck. The municipality has left the matter in the hands of the police for investigation to apprehend the culprit(s).

The occupants of four vehicles miraculously sustained no serious injuries after being involved in an accident of an overtaking manoeuvre gone horribly wrong.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when a double cab pickup trauck with four occupants travelling towards Swakopmund tried to reportedly overtake a hatch-back vehicle when vehicles approached from the front. The driver of the pick-up attempted on moving back to his lane but pushed the hatch-back off the road resulting in the vehicle overturning. The pick-up was swang back into the oncoming lane, clipping an approaching pick-up on the rear-side, also hitting another hatch-back.

Fortunately no serious injuries were reported at the scene, contrary to the severety of damages caused by the accident.

As part of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) marking of 500 years of reformation, all the Lutheran Churches in Walvis Bay held a joint church service on Sunday, 23 April 2017 at the Kuisebmond Stadium that was part of the preparation of the Federations' Twelfth Assembly held in Windhoek from 10-16 May 2016.

from the Usakos Circuit (ELCRN) and Swakopmund Lutheran Parishes.

Members first met at a point of departure, the Catholic Good Shepherd Church before they all proceeded to the Kuisebmond Stadium led by all pastors.

They held the service under the theme – “We are liberated by God's grace”.

These words go to the heart of the gospel of Jesus Christ and to the soul of the Lutheran Reformation.

They are linked to Luther's key insight that helped trigger the Reformation – Christians attain salvation only by the grace of God. “Liberated by God's Grace” is the main theme of the celebrations surrounding the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. It will also be the theme of the 2017 Assembly of The Lutheran World Federation in Windhoek, Namibia. The celebrations, worship, study and engagement over the next three years will focus on how the gracious love of

faithful Christians to reach out as healers and reconcilers to a world torn apart by strife and inequality.

The Twelfth Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation was held in Windhoek from 10-16 May 2017.

As the highest governing body of the Lutheran World Federation, the Assembly brought together representatives of its member churches, partner organisations, guests and others.

The year 2017 coincides with the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and plans are underway to make the 500th anniversary a real opportunity for commemoration and celebration, for discernment and action as well as affirmation, growth and learning.

The overall objectives are to strengthen the global Communion, reaffirm the LWF's ecumenical commitment and its role as a vital instrument of God's love and transforming actions in this world. As it is the case with the overall approach to the LWF's approach to the Reformation anniversary, the commemoration and celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation will be undertaken with a spirit of ecumenical sensitivity and accountability.

Lutheran Reformation is not an exclusive property of Lutheran churches. Rather, it has evolved further, leading to other expressions of reformation in the church. Different denominations, beyond the Lutheran, claim ownership over key features of the theological insights of Lutheran Reformation of the 16th century. Indeed, Lutheran reformation was, and continues to be a contribution into the whole of the body of Christ, and to the world at large. Furthermore, the LWF wants to emphasize that Reformation anniversary is not just an event but a process that started in 2015 and involved programmes and activities at all levels, from local, national and regional to global.

and a converging point for all major undertakings that have implications in the life, thinking and work of the global communion.

The decision to choose Windhoek for the Twelfth Assembly is Windhoek, Namibia was of great significance for the global Lutheran Communion.

The history of the relationship between the LWF and the Lutheran churches in Namibia is closely intertwined with the larger context of the struggle for justice, freedom and sovereignty, indeed, the struggle for human dignity of all Namibians. Therefore, rooting the Assembly in Namibian soil symbolised and crystallized the decades of churches' accompaniment with Namibia and was therefore an occasion to give thanks to God for the grace that has kept hope alive to this day.

The highlight of the Twelfth Assembly of The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) was the global Commemoration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation where Assembly delegates from all over the world joined members of the Lutheran churches in Namibia and ecumenical guests in commemorating the anniversary.

Thus a joint-service took place on Sunday, 14 May 2017, at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, which saw thousands of people who turned up for the Church Service. Bishop Emeritus Dr Zephania Kameeta, former LWF Vice-President for Africa, preached on the Assembly theme, “Liberated by God's Grace.” He previously served as Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia (ELCRN) and is currently the Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare in Namibia.

Die skooltrots kon baie duidelik tennis, tot netbal, hokkie en rugby, is almal aan die gesien word in elke leerlinge se voorkoms en die gehoor voorgestel. Die spanne het met geesdrif mooi manier waarop elke span hulself met groot geesdrif bekendgestel het. hul krete geskreeu en liedjies gesing.

Ons eerste spanne van onderskeidelik hokkie, rug- Die aand is op ‘n hoogtepunt afgesluit deur die sing by en netbal het hul staal gewys. Die netbal meisies van die skoollied. het met entoesiasme 'n dans uitgevoer. Die hokkie Baie dankie vir elke leerling, ouer, onderwyser en manne het trots tussen vlae deur geloop terwyl die afrigter se motivering en betrokkenheid. Baie rugby manne deur luukse, geborgde motors van sterkte aan al die Pro-Ed spanne vir die opkomende Privaatskole Toernooi. Mag Pro-Ed van krag tot Autohaus Swakopmund ingebring is.

All set 3rd Brandberg Rhino Run on 11 June The 3rd annual Brandberg Rhino Run and Ride will take place in Uis on Sunday, 11 June 2017. The event is organised by Nico and Riana Scholtz under their family brand “Touch and Go”. Funds are raised through this event for the Namibian non-profit organisation, Save the Rhino Trust. The main sponsors are KPMG and RMB Namibia. Bruce Fordyce, long distance running legend and nine times winner of the Comrades Marathon will attend the event and perform as guest speaker.

Activities on the Sunday will include an approximate 26 km trail run, approximate 13 km trail run and an approximate seven km fun run/walk, as well as an approximate 31 km mountain bike ride. The mountain bike event will start at 6 am, followed by the running events. The start and finish will be at the Daureb Isib Campsite in Uis. Prize giving takes place at 10:00 and will be preceded by a short kiddies-run for children under the age of ten.

As a prequel to the running and cycling events on Sunday, the Brandberg FKT Challenge will take place on the Friday, 9 June. The Challenge will entail athletes to compete to improve on the Fastest Know Time (FKT) of 8hrs6min, set by American Fred Zalokar in 2015, up and down Brandberg Mountain. A select group of ten very fit and able athletes will take place in this event. Tobie Verwey, the Namibian trail athlete who finished in 10th place at the recent 4 Deserts Sahara multistage ultra marathon will be among the hopefuls for the N$10 000 reward for a new FKT. All events will take place on trails and tracks within the Tsiseb conservancy with the Brandberg, a National Heritage site, as focal point. The courses are unfenced, unspoilt and sensitive to human impact. The organisers enforce a strict policy racing “green”, to prevent impact on the environment while still enjoying the benefits of the natural outdoors. Runners and riders will carry their own water and snacks, and are required to take out what they take in. No off-road driving will be permitted and spectators will only be allowed to support on national roads. For the sake of conserving the sensitive aspects of the Brandberg, only ten participants will be allowed to take part in the Brandberg FKT Challenge.

Cash prizes will be awarded to athletes, male and female, able to best improve on previous years' records for the same events.

This is the first year the event will take place on a Sunday. With most athletes travelling from the coast and far inland, this should allow them to attend the event without having to take the Friday off from work.

Race number pickup will be on the Saturday afternoon at the Daureb Isib Campsite in Uis. On the Saturday evening there will be an informal social braai at the same venue. An auction of luxury accommodation and adventure packages, as well as valuable collector's items such as autographed books and photo prints will take place during dinner. Catering will be done by the Cactus and Coffee restaurant and will amount to N$100 per person. Patrons are to bring their own cutlery, drinks, a camp chair or picnic blanket and a head torch.Race attendance is by pre-registration only and closes on 4 June 2017.

Namib Diesel Social League Contributed for sometime it's back down to business.. uh .. serious squash business and there is no better way to do that, than playing in one of the most popular events of the year: The Namib Diesel Social League. Yep, it kicked off on Wednesday 24th, and what a great sight to see all the courts abuzz with play. 12 teams of 6 participating this year, making a total of 72 players.. Absolutely magic!
