Minister of Mines and Energy, Mr Obed Kandjoze Investment Conference, the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Tjekero Tweya, applauded the town of Arandis for not giving up after some heavy economic blows in the past, especially when Rössing mine had to cut jobs as a result of the drop in the uranium price. According to him Arandis is ready to play a vital role in the socio economic upliftment of residents in the Erongo Region. He acknowledged the role the media plays in getting investors on board, but however spit fire about some reporters who only focus on sensationalism. “Shame on you, you must report factual and responsible. Informing prospective investors with negative headlines is going to chase them away,” the Minister warned. Grade 12 learners at Namib High School in Swakopmund received their Matric Farewell invitations yesterday morning and were in for a big surprise.

Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Tjekero Tweya Arandis Municipality a few pointers on how to benefit from their ideal location, next to the B2 highway. He commented that the Corridor Group is planning to establish smaller inside hubs and asked why Arandis could not be one. The fact that the town has an airport as well as the railway to its disposal was also emphasised by Smith. His message to Arandis was to dream big in order to achieve their goals.

As this year’s theme has to do with the marines, the Navy Brass Band en-

tertained the learners with a live performance. The Matric Farewell will

take place on 23 October at a venue, yet to be announced.

Mayoral Fundraising Dinner Leandrea Louw

The annual Mayoral Fundraising Dinner will take place on 22 August. This was announced by the Mayor of Walvis Bay, Ms Uilika Nambahu, at an Ordinary Council Meeting held last week at the Kuisebmond Chambers. “The fundraising dinner is a flagship event, organised by the Office of the Mayor annually with the view to raise funds aimed at meeting the rising trend in needs within the Port City of Walvis Bay. This is a platform for networking amongst corporate captains and industry leaders in a socially relaxing atmosphere while showcasing their resolve to assist in rendering a helping hand to the needy,” Mayor Nambahu said. “I would also like to encourage all the companies in the Port City of Walvis Bay who have not received invitations to liaise with the Office of the Mayor.” She also requested all companies and charities in Walvis Bay who are currently running feeding schemes to liaise with the

Office of the Mayor, in order for the office to appraise their existence and the amount of people or children they feed. “The Walvis Bay Municipal Council is committed to developing this city and through that ensures that it is associated with progress and innovation. However it is evident that some of our residents go to bed hungry simply because they do not have the means to access funds to feed themselves. This is completely unacceptable especially when viewed against the fact that we are building this city as a smart city, but we cannot be seen as a smart city if we are not taking care of our inhabitants, especially those who are poor. I have also been informed that there are persons who suffers from chronic

illnesses such as Tuberculosis (TB) who cannot remain committed to taking their medication due to lack of food. It also came to my attention that there are children who go to bed or school hungry while living in this city of plenty. It is clear that an integrated approach to the issue of food security in Walvis Bay is required. A newspaper advert in this regard will soon appear in daily newspapers detailing the form and type of format the submissions should be made. I trust that all relevant parties will comply with the requests for submission as it aims to streamline and co-ordinate all food programs in the Port City of Walvis Bay, reduce wastage and duplications while ensuring efficiency and effectiveness,” she said.

Duneside High Matrics in 'Forty Days' Controversy

Liesl Losper A dark cloud hangs over the last school days of the Grade 12 learners of Duneside High in Walvis Bay, and their traditional Matric Valedictory and Matric Farewell are hanging in the balance, after their Forty Days celebratory activities at school went sour. According to the school the Forty Days celebration is supposed to be a day on which Grade 12 learners pay special tribute to teachers and members of the staff. This year's grade 12's chose to express themselves by way of going to school on the night of 9 July and hanging posters with messages on the doors of teachers' classrooms, turning chairs upside down and also taking the school's trophies from the cabinet and re-arranging them. Because of these actions the principal and the school board decided the learners should forfeit their Valedictory, which is a

historical event for the school's matrics. “The Valedictory serves as a motivational tool and or tokens of appreciation and or gratitude towards the students, especially to the Grade 12 learners” The namib times also got the learner's side of the story: “It was not our intention to do any harm; we only did it for fun. The previous years “40th day” expression was much worse than this one. Days before the event took place we discussed it with the principal and she was fine with it,” they alleged, “but, as the day drew closer, she suddenly said the event could only take place from 14:00 to 18:00 with a “braai and movies at

the school. We as grade 12 learners did not want to accept it as it was proposed, because every year other grade 12s did it and we just wanted to continue the tradition. We then arranged with the caretaker to open the gates for us on Thursday night, the 9th, to do what we have planned. We designed a poster, Please bring back Mrs Van Vuuren, our old principal, we also wrote “froze” on the principal's door, which referred to an earlier incident at school. We also made other posters which were placed on the doors of teachers' classrooms. The morning of the 10th the principal called all of us and expressed her disappointment in this

regard. Every morning since that incident there is a “vibe” at school and we experience that some of the teachers together with the principal make us feel unworthy. We as Grade 12 learners of 2015 have always done our utmost, to make our school proud. Our Valedictory is very, very important to us as Grade 12 students. The principal sent a letter to our parents stating that “On 9 July at 13:10 the LRC teacher and the head boy was called to get clarification on the Forty Days arrangements. The head boy informed the Principal that the event was cancelled.” The matrics say this is absolutely a lie. “We followed the rules according to the Forty Days celebration, we did not use any alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, nothing was broken, we cleaned the premises early the next morning. On our posters no speci-

fic names were mentioned. Therefore we feel that we were not breaking any school rules.” (Statements from several matrics during an exclusive interview with namib times) The parents also stated their case to the paper. “We are furious that the principal did not inform the parents immediately when they have decided to forfeit our children's Valedictory event. Our children told us that they could rather take away the matric dance but not the Valedictory event. We followed the correct channels and asked for a meeting with the principal. The principal only had excuses, so not to meet with us. When we decided to 'gate crash' the school, she had no other choice than to listen to us. She only commented that she would send out a formal letter to explain what had happened to lead up to this decision, and

other learners arrived at the school as they promised. As far as us parents are concerned we are not going to stop. Our children were just continuing with a tradition which has been there for years. Through this actions our children did not made them guilty of vandalism or use defensive language towards staff members. Nothing was broken during this action, all the things they did could be cleaned or removed without vandalising the building or the school grounds.” The namib times also spoke to four other parents who have children cur-rently in other grades at Duneside High School and they said “Through this incident we think that this is only about egos that had been touched with this action. Is the principal really prepared to let the school go

after they had demanded a written explanation. This letter was provided by the parents to the namib times. The letter states, “According to the school rules the Grade 12 class made themselves guilty of the following offences: Unauthorised access to the school building; Vandalism; Unacceptable behaviour; Disrupted the academic program of the school; Use of offensive language towards staff members. In conclusion parents, the Grade 12 class made themselves guilty of misconduct and therefore they will forfeit their Valedictory, and will have a full school day on 15 September 2015.” We phoned the principal Mrs Einbeck to confirm the incident and to get clarification on whether the school's disciplinary code was followed, and if the school would reconsider

which took her days to draft. We feel, with the letter they followed the wrong procedures. They should have first immediately called all parents to school to discuss the matter professionally and not tell our learners, they could sue them for defamation of character. How can you sue a minor? Our children are under tremendous pressure at school since the incident took place. We spoke to some of the members on management regarding the letter and it appears that some of them do not even know about the incident or the so-called letter. The children cleaned the school immediately after the teachers and

through bad publicity, just because of some posters and shredded papers that were lying around? These children are leaving school in the next few months and go on with their lives. The only thing we see that is forfeited is the excellent reputation and performance that Duneside High School had built up over the years, which was made possible by their learners, especially the matrics of 2015. I must say, I am not sure that I would like my child to be at a school where personal egos can make the rules change.” The school's letter is dated 23 July, but the parents said they only received it on 30 July

to give the children their Valedictory ceremony. The parents also informed the namib times that they are busy organising their own Valedictory ceremony and Matric farewell for their children. Yesterday at 14:00, the parents sent a letter to the School Board, asking for further investigations into the matter. The learners also informed the paper yesterday afternoon that one of the teachers had asked them to reconsider having their Matric farewell at school, since the teachers also want to say a “proper goodbye” to them.

Chaotic traffic weekend, once again Madelaine Laubscher

According to a spokesperson from the St Gabriels Ambulance Services, at least two people were seriously injured in an accident that ocurred Friday night between three or four vehicles near the Areva mine. “A man was transported to the hospital in Usakos for further medical care, while another man was transported to Windhoek with severe head injuries and a chest fracture,” she said. Another incident ocurred at the vicinity of Vierkantklip during the weekend where

a motorist and his passengers ran away from a scene where the vehicle allegedly overturned. An eye witness said that on her way to Swakopmund, she saw the car was lying on its side. According to her she called the police and as she approached the vehicle, the driver and passengers were busy tossing a bag filled with alcohol and more bottles onto the beach. It is believed that one of the passengers was a pregnant lady in a lot of pain, thus

the eyewitness notified G4S to send an ambulance. “Two men pushed the car back onto its wheels. When the one man found out that we had called the police, he was very upset with us. He said he did not have his license with him. There were alcohol fumes that came from all three persons. They tried to push the car out of a hole that the front tyre had caused in an attempt to drive away. When they did not succeed, they asked someone to tow the

Activist to continue Quest for removal of German Soldier Memorial Marshallino Beukes Swakopmund community activist, Laidlaw Peringanda, on Friday at midday, began to cover the German Soldier Memorial in Swakopmund with black plastic bags, as he had threatened to do earlier, should the Government not remove the monument by 30 July. He cut a lonely figure as he tried to cover one of the soldiers of the memorial with plastic wrapping, but he did not get far before a policeman called him away from the scene and told him to go and file an affidavit at the police. The namib times at that stage was at the scene, and was also present when he was reprimanded by the police officer, and instructed to go to the police. At that stage we wanted to know from him, why he was alone, and he replied

that all his supporters were at work, and he presented a few pages with names. He was clearly upset when namib times asked him a few questions regarding the history of war in Namibia, and if one should not rather heed the President’s call and embrace the future as one nation. On Saturday, the namib times spoke to Mr Peringanda again. He said that he had indeed gone to the police station on Friday, as he had been instructed by the police, and that he had

been warned. He said the police had warned him that it was a national monument and that tampering with it could lead to international conflict. He stressed that he was continuing in his quest, and that he had notified the Heritage Council and NamRights in this regard. He said he was awaiting their reaction. The namib times will keep its finger on the pulse.

According to the spokesperson at St Gabriels Ambulance Services and a Walvis Bay traffic officer, several more minor accidents ocurred in Walvis Bay. “One collision behind Shoprite involved two vehicles. Light injuries were reported. Another person

The vehicle that was allegedly abandoned by its driver and passengers According to the traffic officer, five drunk driving incidents were reported since Friday. “We had two drunk driving incidents on Friday, another two on Saturday and one on Sunday. We want

to warn the community that we shall be on strict patrol during weekends on the road between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund from now on, due to all the drunk driving incidents,” he concluded.

Adjustment to traffic rules and regulations

Various traffic rules and regulations have been adjusted on 28 July by the Madelaine Laubscher Government. The Traffic Department of Walvis Bay wants to notify the public about this for motorists to adhere to the new rules and regulations. According to the Chief Traffic Officer, Mr Eben Platt, a roadworthy certificate must accompany the application for registration of a motor quadrucycle (quadbike). “Previously it was not the case but under the regulations an application for a duplicate registration or deregistration certificate must be accompanied by a completed and signed declaration form, stating the loss or destruction of the document, also positive identification of the owner. vehicle in which persons are conveyed is enclosed, with a running board to a height of 350mm above the surface upon which a person is seated, or 900mm above the surface upon which a person is standing.” Complaints also surfaced regarding cyclists riding in the middle of the road instead of on the left side of the road. “Cyclists may not ride their bicycles in the middle of the road. We will reprimand and fine anyone making him- or herself guilty of this stunt. We also ask tourists that are riding bicycles on the B2 road to be careful. They should rather use the road behind Dune7 which is much safer. Regarding motorists that have headlights with a dangerous glare (blue lights) or spot lights, we will deregister your vehicles, as it is highly illegal,” he concluded.

Popular Drinking Spot closed Mavourlene !Gaës The well-known Vilakazi Lounge in Walvis Bay’s Kuisebmond area and two more drinking spots were closed by the police over the weekend. According to a source the closing of these drinking spots came about after the owners were discovered to have been operating without valid liquor licenses. The “Outapi Bar” that is also owned by the same person that owns Vilakazi, and the “Wata Wata Shebeen” which is owned by a different person, are the other two closed. Outapi and Vilakazi, were

closed by the police on Sunday, while the Wata Wata Shebeen was closed on Saturday. The closing of the three alcohol selling outlets follows after another popular spot, Ekunde’s had to stop

business in June this year, for also allegedly operating without a valid liquor license. Around five shebeen owners were also given fines, for exceeding trading hours over the weekend.

The Erongo Police Warns: “Be Cautiouns!” The Erongo Community Policing Affairs Officer, Sergeant Ileni Shapumba, from now on, will contribute with tips and more on this page, for the sake and safety of the community. out of the country, Shapumba warns. He also cautions about so-called 'Self-styled' traditional healers: “We have been informed about another traditional healer in Kuisebmond, who allegedly practises more than one profession. He is a traditional healer during the week, and on Sundays, he is the pastor of his own church.” Sergeant Shapumba has also cautioned people of the region about another incident that took place on Friday, that he says falls under the same category as the abovementioned.. “The suspect designed a form in which aspiring land applicants would apply for a 300 square metre piece of land. On the form, one of the conditions was that you should not sell your property for 30 years.” He says this condition created an impression in the people's mind, that they would get 300 square metres of land and subsequently own a property under the scheme that they will not be able

This week in his contribution, he cautions residents living in the Erongo Region to be on the alert and not fall prey to unscrupulous opportunists. “Our concern is to educate people to not fall prey to unscrupulous people that in the end have no good motives, but to cheat them out of their hard-earned money,” says Sergeant Shapumba. “Firstly, there was a case in which a fraudster, posing as a traditional healer, took advantage of a lady. The lady resigned from her job with her salary as well as her pension fund that she wanted to multiply in worth. The traditional healer took advantage of her situation. He instructed her to change the money into South African currency and then put the money into a certain box (claiming the money will multiply in the box). By the time the victim realised the true intentions of the traditional healer, he was already

People, after paying the amount, were not given any sort of proof of payment. You only complete the form; pay your money and go.” He says there was no assurance or evidence for a piece of land given by the Local Authorities as custodians of land distribution, and the number of applicants is also not limited. “The entire process is just not making sense. Seeing the fact that the people are so desperate to get land, many people have paid the money and completed the form. You should be vigilant and inquisitive, let us investigate first, find out the facts in the issue, try to see if the process is really reliable, interrogate the matter and ask for advice. People are losing their hard earned resources at the hands of these traditional healers and opportunists. We warn against these type of acts that are being perpetuated upon, particularly our primitive communities. Those who are doing it, should just know that one day, they will be apprehended. They must not take advantage of people.” Sergeant Shapumba has urged the community to come forward, should they feel threatened by schemes like these, or should reach out to the

Where to Fish

One of the key concerns from stakeholders was the alignment of all parties within the end-to-end supply chain, helping to facilitate trade between Walvis Bay and the landlocked locations, and to improve the overall economic situation of Namibia. Robert Maslamoney MD for Maersk Line said “It is essential that all industry players play their part to ensure that we are able to eradicate inefficiencies in the existing supply chain(s). We need to position Namibia as a SAFE, RELIABLE, and COST-COMPETITIVE gateway into and out of the SADC region, and when compared to existing gateways like South Africa, Mozambique, and Tanzania, we need to identify our existing resources and be able to optimise the usage of these resources, both tangible and intangible. I commend Namport for their active and constructive engagement with local industry and I can only stress that I would like to see similar engagement and focus from other SOEs, namely TransNamib and Customs to share their plans on how

they will contribute to the Logistics Forum Hub by addressing existing chronic issues.” Namport, during this stakeholders meeting, was asked if the port would expand the channel in order to be able to accommodate two vessels at the channel simultaneously, since the port is expanding and the traffic is increasing in town. Shareholders suggested that the Port engage the local municipality and business people to reroute the traffic out of town. Another shareholder said the whole initiative of a logistic hub was a good initiative but the Port should look at tariff reduction to make it a success. Elias Mwenyo, Manager, Sales and services at Namport said, “With the current construction of the new container terminal, the major aim is to accommodate larger vessels that will dock at the port of Walvis Bay. Therefore widening the entry and exit channel is imminent. We shall continue providing a faster turnaround time of vessels at the quayside, therefore widening the channel will be an added advantage.

Fltr, Victor Ashikoto (Executive ICT Namport), Clive Smith (WBCG project manager, Robert Maslamoney (Maersk Line MD) and Elias Mwenyo (Manager Business Development, Namport Namport recently went out on tender to exactly address this problem through appointing an expert to advise on the best way to route the cargo in and out of the port without causing nuisance in town.

The successful bidder will be announced soon. Indeed, as the port authority, we do our own research to establish our competitiveness in relation to other ports in the region. We can confirm that we are

competitive; however, this does not stop us from further engaging with service providers to re-look our tariff rates and structure. We subscribe to an opendoor policy and we do inforce it” Mwenyo said.

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Recycling bins for Swakopmund The first distribution of the orange recycling bins will start next week Monday, 10 August and residents are urged to make sure someone is at home to receive the bin. A total of 1 912 houses will receive bins. On Monday, 389 households in Kramersdorf will receive their

recycling bins. The waste collection day for this suburb will be on Mondays. On Tuesday it will be Mondesa's turn and 448 houses in this area will receive bins. Their waste collection days will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Next up is Tamariskia, where 435 houses will

Marshallino Beukes receive bins next week Wednesday and their waste will be collected on Wednesdays. In Vineta and Ocean View, 240 and 400 homes will be provided with bins respectively. Vineta's waste collection day will be Thursdays and Ocean View's on Fridays.

Little ones of Hanganeni Primary School also showcased their dancing skills The Swakopmund Municipality in collaboration with Rent-ADrum, resolved to transform Swakopmund into a sustainable city and one of the ways to achieve this, is to implement recycling of waste at the source of waste creation, at home. A successful recycling campaign was conducted on Saturday at the Amphitheatre, where residents were informed and educated about recycling. Orange recycling bins

for all recyclable materials will be distributed to local households. According to the recycling programme's organisers, the development of a town is measured on how

much waste is generated and how much ends up at the landfill site. Eventually the waste at the dump-site gets blown away by the wind and end up littering the desert.

The recycle programme will kick off with about 2 000 households, and will cover all residential locations of Swakopmund. This will be a pilot project, and should the residents cooperate well, phase two will see all households provided with orange recycling bins.

German Soldier Monument covered in plastic Swakopmund community activist, Laidlaw Peringanda, began to cover the German Soldier Memorial in Swakopmund with black plastic bags at midday today, as he had threatened to do earlier, should the Government not remove the monument by 30 July. Walvisbay Embroidery Ons is nie SA nie. Hier leef ons en laat leef. Dis hoekom jy alleen was. DAAR IS ALTYD N KLOMP WAT MOEILIKHEID UITLOK OF SOEK VIR IETS OM ANDER TE ONTSTELD... net soos kinders. Georg Erb To fill you in with some historical facts regarding that monument. It does not have very much to do with the Schutztruppe, it does not have anything to do with Genl von Trotha and his alleged “Vernichtungsbefehl,” it certainly does not have much to do with any ‘concentration camps’: When the largest contingent of the Schutztruppe, various of their senior commanders as well as the governor of the German colony South West Africa were on an extended patrol in the Gibeon area in the remote southern parts during January 1904, Omuhonge Samuel Maharero and several other ovahonge of the Herero tribe had ordered hundreds, if not thousands of their best fighters to plunder and raid German stations, murder German farmers, their wives and children and other civilian settlers. During the full moon night of January 11th 1904 chaos erupted, while the German Schutztruppe army was many hundred kilometers away. Even the march back to the capital would be an arduous undertaking. A battle cruiser of the German Navy, ‘SMS Habicht’ happened to be en route from Cape Town back to Germany. They were ordered to urgently help out in this dire situation and were brought inland by rail via Khan, Modderfontein, Jakkalswater, Karibib and Okahandja. Many of these German marine soldiers died during the ensuing battles against the superior numbers of the Herero at Ovikokorero, Okaharui, Omaruru, Otjihaenamaparero, at Ombujonganga, Oviombo, at Okandjira and other places (the Navy had traditionally worn white uniforms, a circumstance that certainly did not count in their favor in these months of gruelling bush warfare). Just as many soldiers died of diseases. Several were simply lost in action, others were wounded. The battle cruiser could not take all too many survivors back to their HQ in Kiel in Germany. There simply weren’t many. These survivors of the Marine-Expeditionskorps had commissioned the sculptor Wolff Moritz in Berlin to create the statues, depicting their comrades; one fallen soldier, another holding on to his rifle. The statues were cast in bronze by the Metallgiesserei Gladenbeck in Berlin. It had been the original wish and intention to display the monument in Windhoek, either in front of the old Kasino (roughly were the Kudu statue is standing today along Independence Ave) or as another option, inside the Ausspannplatz circle. However Governor Schuckmann (a successor of von Lindequist, who, in turn, succeeded Theodor Leutwein) had an issue with this. He refused to display the sculpture on the grounds that ‘the natives should not ever see a sculpture of a wounded German soldier’. He sent the crate with the huge bronze statues to Swakopmund to be shipped back to Germany. The crate had been standing in the harbor of Swakopmund for several months when the mayor of the town asked the harbor master about the contents. He was informed of the contents and of the fact that the Windhoekers did not like the sculptures. Whereupon the mayor remarked: “Oh those silly Windhoekers! We Swakopmunders can gladly admit that also German soldiers are vulnerable, that Germans are not invincible.” He tasked architect and ‘Regierungsbaumeister’ Otto Ertl (who had also designed the ‘Altes Amtsgericht’, the Swakopmund Prison, the Antonius-Hospital, and had drawn up the initial plans of the Lutheran Church) to have a pedestal built from granite chunks from a local quarry, roughly in today’s Richthofen street. The German emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II had tasked Korvettenkapitän Fuchs from the Marine Korps to inaugurate the monument. This happened on the 26th of July 1908. Governor Schuckmann excused himself from the event. Photographs were later sent to the sculptor in Berlin, who remarked by return mail letter, that the rifle strap of the fallen soldier was missing. Somebody in the harbour in Swakopmund went and actually found the brass straps in another wooden crate. They wouldn’t fit the granite plinth, and

a stone mason had to chisel away more rock beneath the fallen soldier in order to create space to accommodate that rifle strap. This was completed in 1912 only. That is in short how it happened that the monument was erected in Swakopmund, where people had not complained about the figure of a fallen German soldier. Even in the Oshiwambo language, one of several names for our town remains to this day: “Gumwe e lala, gumwe thaneka ondjebo” (Where one sleeps while the other holds the gun). Menesia Vilho I am not white... and I don’t support such attention seeking individual who seems to want to focus their efforts on such things instead of be productive citizens... it’s part of our history. If he wants nothing to do with it or has no children to educate about the history of Namibia, we do. He is so selfish. Christal L. Maasdorp Why do so some Namibians always try to copy what is going on in South Africa? Do we want to be where they are as a country? No! Richard Reid We are very lucky and privileged to live in one of the best towns in Africa. Tourists flock to the Coast because of it’s history and culture, yes in the past there were wrong doings carried out but that is what makes history all over the world. This history draws an income and provide many opportunities for all kinds of people. Sure there is a lot of social issue and work to be done, to improve the lives of many. But just what exactly is this man trying to prove!? Go do something useful with your life. Sidwin Taube I really do not know what is wrong with people these days, its a historic monument, it does not mean anyone is still supporting the past, if this guy wants the monument gone then the whole town has to go coz the whole town was build by the colonialist back then? Leave the monument it is history that generates income for the country, if he wants it gone or anyone else, then they must then generate say 50 to 80% of the total income received from tourists a year and contribute it to the businesses that generate money in the meanwhile who in the end of the day pays these peoples salaries and wages? Georg Erb Everyone in the world is the descendant of someone affected by some or other war. Even the leaders of our government are in denial about their own atrocities during the liberation struggle. I would be referring to several bomb attacks on innocent civilians in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Oshakati. I would be refering to countless assassinations throughout the country, throughout the years. Even the abductions of thousands of school children from Owambo, taken across the border into camps in Angola are not acknowledged by our own current leaders. The victims live amongst us, and so do their children. The perpetrators also live amongst us today. That is the unsavory nature of warfare, Mr Peringanda. I must admit I am shocked and appalled by the comments of many white countrymen in this thread, comments that reek of arrogance and utter ignorance, of an illusion of white supremacy, of seeing Africans as savages - in 2015! We have to find a middle path, but we also have to respect each others’ cultures and our heritage. There should be unity in diversity. There can only be UNITY in acknowledging this wonderful diversity of cultures and of peoples that we have in this special country of ours. It is high time that white people in this country also show some interest in the indigenous cultures and their histories. How can we respect each other - while we don’t know a thing about where we each come from? Wekies Uek Face the Germans self not the monument. Pieter Britz If they remove the German History out of Namibia the German tourist industry to Namibia will be affected negatively. The Namibian Government had very good relations with Germany. Don’t tamper with something that can hurt a relationship. And what about the Namibian German community. We as South Africans and ex Namibians look up to the Namibian people for their outstanding relationships between the different race groups. Thank you. Dominique Mucki Kaspari Ask yourself one simple question... what have you as a person done to improve anybody’s life? That should keep many busy... Stop hating on the past we are in the future. Michael Afrikaner Was there any body out there opposing the removal of the soldier on the horse in whk? And what happened of it... and was there any objections in name chancing of Lűderitz? I am just curios about what people really want in Namibia or maybe they are not

Namibians and just wants the namibian nation to stand divided. Holger Ulrich Klose Well so sad more and more people trying to work together keeping peace and stability more and more Namibian living aside each other one really sometimes gets the feeling people blaming past blaming certain nations etc etc the feeling is rather it looks like most people doesn’t matter colour religion culture what so ever who not really working hard enough achieving something well don’t get mme wrong not always everybody has these chances we have to created them for all man I could talk for days now… people when are we going to grow up learn from the past all that show me one person again doesn’t matter which colour trying to pull demolish break down any of the new statues no one no where? So please start getting over some parts of history like a few already said yes 1 000% there where a lot of wrong doings not only from European or western sides but even in between tribes cultures among Africans. So I only have one big question WHEN WHEN? Are we going to move forward well defiantly not with u and bloody go back to where u come from. Gerald Danyel Johr There is nothing you can do to change or reverse the past, the history will always remain unchanged. Statues are like a history book - just telling a story. Moira-Anne Schaaf-Somers ………. Thx for the great info input Georg Erb! Sean G Oberg Clearly the man has too much time on his hands. Brandon Stiger Monuments helps us to remember our mistakes and our victories. If u remove them you remove n part of where you come from and a greater chance of repeating those mistakes. Remember there will be no future without the past. Look at South Africa as an example they are loosing sight of the past and they are starting to create the same mistakes. We are also an economy which relies heavily on tourism to boost our GDP and we are going to remove that with the monuments. Cheroldine Annalee Lombard Easy to talk when you on the other side of the equation. Chris Hansen Fast way to seek attention and climb a career in politics? Mabe he also want to sit around the table with our president to negotiate? Atention seekers! Marcell Adolf Noble We are so blessed. The Lord’s blessings rest upon the Namibian Nation, because we are striving to be our Brother’s Brother and not his enemy. We must not forget what did happen with “Lot’s wife”; instead of looking forward to the Bright Future that lies ahead, she looks back “to the past” and changed in a Salt Pillar. The Future for Namibia shines Brighter and Brighter everyday and we as a Nation grow closer and closer, one of these Days we will be the Best in the World and the Lord will open the Windows of Heaven to shower us with Blessings from above. Imke Rust I honestly never knew or cared about this monument, so it is good to hear and learn the story behind it. Thank you, Georg. I just wish that the amount of en-

ergy and time spent on destroying or taking down old monuments, would rather be spend creating new things, which help Namibians to really identify as one nation - and I am not sure monuments are the contemporary or best choice. Especially if they are designed and build by another nation (in our case most new monuments have been build by North Korea). Secondly I do believe we would do better, if monuments were not about wars and victors from wars, but from people who have really made the world a better place to remind us of our greatest potentials. And one last thought, I am saddened by all the hate and name calling on both sides. Really people is this the best you can do? Even if we do not agree, please let’s respect each other and speak with each other to be able to find common grounds. Hate is not the answer and it’s not helpful at all. Ludien Assvoels Browns Waiting forward to have that monument down or crushed our hereros died like ants in the massacre by germans. Olive Branch Walvis Bay Why live in the past? Can the past change anyting for you in the future? Laidlaw Peringanda do someting that you can be remembered in a statue! Zibiso M’zee Mavuna Surely there must be reasons to his actions. I would like to know why. Ingo Irle Thanks Nampol to keep peace and harmony in this town... they act against President Hage Geingob’s reconciliation mission. Silke Bean All that while productive people were actually doing something positive. Working. Lloyd Ambrosini He must first stop speaking Afrikaans if he does. He must cover that language in a plastic bag before the statue. Shamaine Garcia Steenkamp Really! Whats up with people! The Germany colonisation of SWA is part of OUR history! Embrace history! We all learned from it! Heiko Elbers At least he didn’t had to walk to far. Antonie Rossouw If you destroy monuments you destroy yourself. It means you are afraid to honour those who came before you. Rather do something people can remember you by in history... do not swear at people. It shows weak character use the past to build a better tomorrow. Negativity slowly kills you, man up and face the future! Dalene Driescher Grow up small minded, there are many to worry about to help this nation, than rather let a statue let you do stupid things. Camel En Monica Viljoen If you are trying to get noticed and praised by politicians, you are in the wrong country. Please don’t get confused with Zim or SA. We have a President with honour and integrity. Monica. Ludien Assvoels Browns I see white people in the comments …… That monument must be destroyed.

Recipe for success: Hardwork, Commitment and Dedication Duinesig School Choir Leandrea Louw The Duinesig School Choir are on their way to Port Elizabeth South Africa, to participate yet again in the ATKV Choir Competition from 5 to 8 August. This Walvis Bay choir is the only representative of Namibia at this competition. The Choir held a fundraising event on Saturday night at the school and we visited the choir shortly before the event. “The event is to raise funds for some of the learners who are less privileged and can’t afford to take that extra pocket money with, but also to show those who will be attending, what the South Africans can expect from us,” said Ms Annalisa Afrikaner, a Grade 7 teacher at Duinesig Combined School, who has been actively involved with the choir since 2012. “The excitement is huge, but for some of us this will be our first competition of this magnitude, so we are excited but nervous at the same time,” some of the choir members said. Ms Afrikaner says it is the third time the choir has qualified for the ATKV Applous Choir Competition in South Africa.

The choir was established was in 2008, by Mr Immanuel Herero, then a teacher at the school. In 2011 and 2012 they won silver and gold respectively in the ATKV Regionals Competition, but unfortunately didn’t qualify for the National Final. In 2013, they qualified for the ATKV Applous finals in Bloemfontein, where they won 4 out of 5 gold certificates in the competition, and was also the overall winner of the ‘Nie-Afrikaans Moedertaalsprekende Hoërskoolkore – Gemeng’ category. In 2013 they also won gold but did not qualify for the finals. They were also the Regional Winners in the National Choral Network of Namibia Competition

ART EXHIBITIONS Duinesig Combined School Chior earlier this year. The Duinesig School Choir comprises of 40 learners from the Duinesig Combined School, with their youngest member in grade 7 and their oldest members in Grade 12. “Each year we host auditions, during the first semester of the school year and it’s during this time of the year where ‘grooming’ takes place. The second semester it’s competition time,” says

Erich Areseb, junior choir conductor and alumni head boy and dux learner of the school. The choir is under the strict guidance of Mr Otniel Tjombe, and has also been with the choir since 2008. The repertoire of the choir ranges from works of different composers, to songs with their ‘own added flavour’. They practise on Tuesdays and Thursdays directly after school till 15:00.

Ms Afrikaner also believes in the phrase ‘education comes first’, and is a strong enforcer of this belief. Many of the choir members have mentioned that they partake in other activities as well, as part of the choir and that they find a balance between their education, sport and choir practice and competitions. The choir departs today and we wish them the best of luck.

Mannetti four-year contract with NFA Former Brave Warriors' coach, Ricardo Mannetti, has signed a four-year contract with the Namibian Football Association (NFA) to again be senior national football team head coach. Mannetti resigned as coach of the senior national football team after returning from Niger, where it lost 0-1 in its first game of the 2017 African Nations Cup (Afcon) qualifiers. The defeat came after he helped the Brave Warriors win Namibia's first-ever football silverware in the Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa)

Cup, which was hosted in South Africa in May this year. The four-year contract commenced on 1 August 2015 and ends 31 July 2019. As part of his contractual obligations, Mannetti is expected to qualify the team to the 2019 Afcon Cup. NAMPA

The Dome’s Health & Wellness Centre Officially Open The Health & Wellness Centre of The Dome officially opened its doors on Saturday, after being accessible to the public for the past month, for free viewing, testing and trying. The managing team at The Dome describes the centre as Unique, Innovative and Inspirational. “It is the first gym in Africa to feature the technologically advanced Mallia range cutting edge technology to help those using it become fit: users have their fitness biometrically assessed and their details and the recommended workouts are then stored on an electronic data card. During exercise sessions users slot these cards into the individual machines in the circuit and their workouts are then tailored to their personal needs and fitness levels. It’s uncom-

plicated and results-driven fitness at its most effective. For those wanting to take more charge of their workouts and do so using the best equipment available, the gym is extensively equipped with the L+K brand of gym apparatus, which is considered by many to be the premier brand of gym apparatus worldwide. Each L+K machine is hand assembled with great attention to detail in Germany. The brand offers 4 different ranges which can be mixed up and combined to provide the ultimate in strength training options.

L+K places such value on their equipment that they have sent a team of technicians to install the machines at The Dome. This is also the largest and most diverse installation that the brand has ever done. The installation includes items such as treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical trainers, rowing machines and free weights. There is a partitioned ‘women only’ area in the gym, as well as a 140m2 group fitness area. A variety of group fitness classes such as Spin-bike, Zumba, kick boxing, aerobics, TRX, kettle bells

and yoga will be offered and depending on public demand additional options will be added in the future. The 25m, two lane indoor swimming pool located next to the gym is Namibia’s first rehabilitation pool with wheelchair access. It is heated so that it is always inviting to use, regardless of the temperature outside. With medical suites (available for rent to physiotherapists and other therapists) located within the pool wing, the area is well-planned and easy to negotiate, with change

rooms conveniently located off the main hall. The pool is open to professional athletes for training and also to swimming schools in the afternoons. It is also available for open swimming during off-peak times, but bookings for this need to be made 24 hours in advance.

Athlete ploughs back into community

Sherwin Vries, former sprinter and his business partner and friend, Weston Bester, decided to plough back into the Walvis Bay community, by setting up a fitness centre at the Jan Wilken Indoor Centre. Vries made his debut in 1999 when he was a mere 19 years old, by breaking Frank Fredericks’ National Junior 100m and 200m records. He represented Namibia at several international events including the 1999 All Africa Game and the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

He moved to South Africa in 2002 and was subsequently granted citizenship, where he represented South Africa in several other international athletic events. These events include the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia and the 2007 All Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria. His last appearance for South Africa was in 2007 at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan. Bester on the other hand is an entrepreneur, who is the owner and Creative Director of Young Designers Advertising. “Our vision with this fitness centre is to keep the people motivated. We have numerous

plans not only for this gym, but the community. We have numerous activities lined up to cater for both young and old, Bester said. The Municipality of Walvis Bay, who is the owner of the Indoor Sport Complex was represented by the Youth, Sport and Culture officer, Mr Daniel Mou-

ton. He urged the public to make use of this facility. “I believe upon the opening of the doors of this centre, the young ones will stray away from drug and alcohol usage.” A brief demonstration of the equipment was given to the guests by Vries.
