Meanwhile, AP and Nampa reports that French investigators have formally identified a washed-up piece of airplane debris found in July on a remote island in the Indian Ocean as part of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, a Boeing 777 that disappeared more than a year ago with 239 people aboard. Investigators have been examining the wing part,
called a flaperon, since it was flown to a French aeronautical research laboratory near Toulouse last month. Malaysian authorities had already declared that the wing fragment was from the missing jet, but until now French investigators couldn’t say with certitude that it was the case. The Paris prosecutor’s office said in a statement today that investigators used maintenance records to match a serial number found on the wing part with the missing Boeing. The flight disappeared March 8, 2014.

it. Can you imagine how I felt, as a young African, to be in the presence of such a great leader, although he is not with us anymore? It was truly amasing!” Hafeni remarked. However it was not a holiday and according to him the training was very intense, disciplined and professional, but at the end of the day he came back home with a huge confidence boost and a changed mindset. They met up with the big bosses of companies like Coca Cola, and renowned billionaire businessmen, who shared their company’s success stories with them. The young leaders also had the honour to shake hands with President Barack Obama, which was a one in a lifetime opportunity. Asked about his motto in life, Hafeni noted that he believes that greatness is inside of oneself and one should always listen to oneself and also believe in
oneself. “You should never doubt your abilities, respect yourself and others and be disciplined. I am a boy from Mondesa and if I could have done it, why not you?” he concluded. The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) that empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. The Fellowship provides 500 outstanding young
leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills at a U.S. higher education institution with support for professional development after they return home. A meeting is planned for 8 September in Walvis Bay for youths between the ages of 25-35. This will be an information sharing meeting, sharing the experience with the Erongo youth and also explaining how to apply for the programme. The meeting will take place at the Walvis Bay Municipality’s premises (American Corner).

The Police in the Erongo region have apprehended a 22 year old woman recently in connection with the alleged rape of a four-yearold minor in May last year. The suspect had been on the run for over a year before the police received a tip-off and arrested her. The Suspect, Eveline Delencia Swartbooi, appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court this week before Magistrate John Liwoyo Sin-dano who granted her bail of N$3 000. According to Nampol’s Detective Chief Inspector Moses !Uwu// khaeb, Swartbooi allegedly worked for the minor’s parents as a domestic worker when the alleged incident took place. “She worked for the

She allegedly inserted two fingers into the toddler’s private parts. ” !Uwu//khaeb said the suspect was arrested on 25 August in the town centre of Walvis Bay after having been on the run for a year and four months. The case against her was opened on 3 May 2014. She’s due back in court on 14 September, pending further investigation.
The tender for the construction of a Multi-Purpose Centre in Swakopmund’s Mondesa surburb was awarded in October 2014 to VG Developers cc at a cost of N$25. 8 million. However, due to changes in the design, the Municipality of Swakopmund will have to cough up N$600 000 more. According to the Ordinary Council meeting minutes, Lithon Project Consultants necessitated to link electricity to a kiosk further than the one indicated during the preliminary project scoping. The Consultants then advised ErongoRed that the requirement had to change from providing 3 x 60A breakers to 3 x 250A units. Subsequently ErongoRed informed them that the in-

Mondesa and the first phase consists of a Community Hall and ablution facilities, as the two should be constructed together to make the hall functional. Phase one entails the construction of a Community Hall, Store and Public ablutions and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The second phase will see the construction of a SME Business and Restaurant Kitchen, with the third
phase catering for an E-Library and After School Projects. Phases four and five caters for a restaurant, squash court, boxing gym and table tennis area. According to the town’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Eckart Demasius, construction at the site is on par. Kameeta believes poverty can be eradicated

The President, Hage Geingob, on his recent visit ito the Erongo Region, made it very clear again that he, together with his new ministries, want to eradicate poverty as soon as possible, and in a sustainable manner. Addressing guests at the Gala Dinner of The Walvis Bay Corridor Group, last week Thursday, the President said poverty in Namibia remained one of the main problems for his government. The President said, “Despite our achievements as a country, we still have work to do when it comes to our socio-economic architecture”. According to the President many of Namibia’s people are still battling the scourge of poverty and there are income benefits that need to be addressed.
That is is the reason why he has declared a fullout war against poverty, He chose a retired bishop, Bishop Zephania Kameeta and assigned him to the position of Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare. The Bishop as a freedom fighter understands the plight of the poor. During the public meeting, which was held last Friday, at the Swakopmund Community Hall, Bishop Kameeta said the raise in pension for senior citizens and people living with disabilities was being paid out
by that Ministry, which was only five months old. “I also want to say that the Ministry does not work in isolation, as far as the question of poverty eradication goes, we work with all the ministries, but we assure poverty eradication is co-ordinated and implemented.” According to Kameeta, on the 14th of August, the President launched a dialogue where the ministry will be focussing on the people of Namibia’s problems and discuss how they think they can eradicate pov-
erty, with the help of the ministry. “This particular dialogue (the community meeting), I regard as that dialogue - and more dialogues will take place all over the country, a lot has already taken place even before the launching of the dialogue by the President.” This will inform them to strategise and to have a blue print on how they (the ministry) are going to deal with the poverty eradication, to strategise the war against poverty eradication. According to Kameeta, they have travelled
Application for Tamariskia Indoor Sports Complex denied Marshallino Beukes Okaheke Investment CC's application to the Swakopmund Municipality for the construction of an indoor sports complex on the remainder of erf 626, Tamariskia (next to the basketball court) was not accepted following the recommendation of the town’s Management Committee. As per the Council’ minutes, the intended sports complex would have catered for all indoor sports and a sport Centre, which would have sold basic sport gear. The applicant’s aim was to serve the communities of Tamariskia, Mondesa and all the new extensions. They, in particular, wished to promote boxing in the suburbs. In their application letter Okaheke Investment noted that “erf 626 has been for years an eye-sore for the residents of the surrounding area and indeed the whole of Swakopmund, as it is prone to criminal activities.” However, they were informed by the Council that development proposals, for the de-
velopment of additional parking and a mini shopping mall, from Messrs Supersave were being awaited. Until date the development proposals from Supersave were not received. The newspaper was however informed that a Swakopmund basketball team is busy planning to develop a youth centre at the said erf. This Centre, according to the spokesperson, will cater for sport activities, life skills development for the youth and in a nutshell, a healthy recreational Centre, where youths can relax and also be educated in the important things in life, such as respect for others, discipline and norms and values of life. All this and more is

No one should go hungry in this country of so much wealth. Kameeta also expressed his concern for pensioners Identity Documents that take very long (3-5 years) to be issued; the bishop said they are taking it up with the ministry of home affairs to see that urgency is applied especially when it comes to the senior citizens of this country so
Bishop Zephania Kameeta that with the document they can apply for their pension or grants. According to Kameeta, there are piles of application forms at the offices where applications forms for pension funds are sent, “and when asked why, the reason for that was, this stupid

Increase in Swakop water tariffs
Marshallino Beukes
From the end of this month, Swakopmund residents will have to dig deeper in their pockets to pay their monthly water bill, after Namwater announced an increase for the bulk purchase price of water for the town.
Mr Eckart Demasius planned to be done in corporation with the government and local authority. This, according to the town’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Eckart Demasius, is in line with what the municipality wants. “We want residents to take ownership of public open spaces, preserve and maintain it and keep it safe, in corporation with the municipality. A very good example is the residents taking care of Paddock Garden. This is our town and it belongs to all of us,”
he noted. He further remarked that public open spaces should remain open for the public and not privatised in order to do business. The remainder of erf 626 is zoned as a Public Open Space. The area is located in a densely populated residential suburb with few recreational areas. The erf measures 7 522m² and has a small concrete floor, used as a basketball court. A subdivided piece of the land was sold to the Evangelical Mission Church (Portion A).
The official notification from Namwater is dated 3 July 2015 and notes that the Cabinet, at its meeting of 19 May 2015, deliberated on and approved the bulk water tariffs as submitted by the Namibia Water Corporation for the financial year 2015/16. The notification letter further states that the new bulk water tariffs will come into effect as from 1 September 2015. “For the Swakopmund Reservoir Scheme, the current tariff of N$7.95 per cubic metre will be increased by 10% to N$8.75 per cubic metre.” The announcement was submitted to the town’s Management Committee

The boys aged 10 and 11 have appeared more than four times in the same court on charges of house breaking and theft since the beginning of this year. They have since been released in the care of their parents, sentenced to community services and are being counselled by social workers, but this did not stop them from allegedly committing the same offences. Their latest appearance, which was conducted in camera, was on Wednesday when the court decided to keep them in the children’s holding cells in Swakopmund until their latest theft case is finalised. The minors allegedly have a record of breaking into houses and tuck shops at Henties Bay to steal food, alcohol, cigarettes and other small items they can sell. Sources close to prosecution told Nampa the court has tried everything to deal with the mischievous boys but
nothing is working. “Those boys do not listen. They do what they want. When you sentence them to community service they do not do it, instead, they evade and go steal again,” said a source. The same source also suspected that the minors smoke and drink alcohol, as they allegedly use the F-word towards police officers and threaten to injure them. “As young as they are, they have no fear or respect for the police. I really do not know how the court will solve this problem,” the source told Nampa. Another source stressed that the situation is tough because the boys cannot be sent to prison because they are under 18 years of age. “We do not have a juvenile prison in Namibia, so the court either sentences them to community services or release them in the care of parents, who have proved to be useless. The boys do not stay
out of trouble for more than two days, just when they are released, you will see them again back in custody,” a source told Nampa. A police officer at the court said: “The community of Henties Bay is tired of these boys. They have called the police on several occasions to go get them from there and keep them in custody, but that is impossible as they are young.” Another source indicated that the Swakopmund Court is currently dealing with 10 cases involving minor boys. Some are from Swakopmund and others from Henties Bay. Magistrate Surita Savage on Wednesday postponed the two boys’ case to 10 September 2015 for continuation of trial. It is however not predictable what punishment will be given should the boys be found guilty of another case of theft. NAMPA
Tamariskia Primary School (Erongo Region) Wins OYO’S Social Engagement Competition 2015 Despite numerous campaigns, Gender-based violence is still getting out of control in Namibia. Every day we hear about children and women being abused. In an effort to tackle this pressing issue, the Ombetja Yehinga Organisation (OYO) trust partnered with the CSO Foundation of Namibia and the European Union to create a program in schools in the Erongo Region. The Erongo Region is a region with a high rate of domestic violence and rape. 357 cases of gender-based violence have been reported during the financial year 2011/2012. This number increased to 438 reported cases in 2012/2013. Fourteen schools in the Erongo Region took part in OYO’s project and were visited three times: twice by the OYO dance troupe and once by the Keetmanshop Youth Group. ‘‘It is important to visit the schools more than once,’’ explains Dr Philippe Talavera, OYO’s director, ‘‘in order to reinforce the message, using different angles. The first show focused on the roots of gender-based violence. The second one looked more at the role of counsellors while the last one looked at services available to survivors of violence, but also how to prevent violence.
Repeating the same message again and again can hopefully have an impact on the lives of our young people.’’ To conclude the project, OYO invited the school to enter the OYO Social Engagement Competition 2015. To win, the schools had to create two boards, one looking at gender-based violence and the other at services available to victims, and had to collect commitment forms. ‘‘The idea of the commitment forms,’’ explained Talavera, ‘‘was to encourage young people and their parents to take a few minutes to think and write down mantras for their lives. They include comments such as ‘I will never let anyone abusing me’ or ‘I will respect my girlfriend or wife’. Wording such ideas is a first step towards living them.’ We are now proud to announce that the winner this
year is Tamariskia Primary School. The school drew very clear messages on their boards and collected the record of 653 commitment forms. The winner will receive a computer and trophy will the runner up will be awarded a trophy Taking a stand in the fight against gender-based violence is more important than ever. Every little effort counts and the stand taken by the schools, in particular Tamariskia Primary School and Namib High School, is highly commendable. Young people are the way forward and we hope they will grow up as responsible adults, so that gender-based violence can become, in Namibia, something from the past.’’

World-renowned shares his skills in Swakopmund

The age-old Asian food, with the name Sushi, has taken the world by storm over the last decades. It has been talked and written about in English since the late 1800s. When namib times met Sushi Master Katsuhiko Miyamoto, the man who introduced Sushi to South Africa’s economic hub, Johannesburg, in 1983, and the Inventor of the delectable “Fashion Sandwich,” he was standing behind the counter of the new Ocean Cellar Sushi Bar in the Strand Hotel Swakopmund. He was without his chef’s attire, because his luggage had been misplaced and was still on its way, but time was tight, and the new, young Sushi chefs of the Strand Hotel had much to learn within three days of training. He shared some of his precious time with namib times, though, and reflected on his career, and on the way Sushi has developed into one of the world’s most popular food forms. “Sushi came to the Southern tip of Africa in 1982, when it was introduced to Cape Town. I introduced Sushi to people in Johannesburg, in a restaurant in Bree Street in 1983 – we served Japanese and Chinese food.” He also introduced the concept of conveyer belt Sushi, which has since become an icon, with his brain child the “Fashion Sandwich.” He founded a Sushi school 16 years ago, and has since taught and trained many in the art of sushi– from housewives, to teams of highly-skilled chefs. He says America introduced Avocado as an element of contemporary Sushi, and although tuna and salmon are very popular in contemporary Sushi, and for Sashimi and Nigiri, in Japan many different kinds of fresh, raw fish are used and enjoyed. Miyamoto, who’s personal Sushi favorite is Sashimi (“ (刺身) - raw, thinly sliced foods served with a dipping sauce and simple garnishes; usually fish or shellfish served with soy sauce and wasabi) says he’s going to introduce local fish, as well as oysters, into the range served on the new Ocean Cellar’s Sushi menu, and teach the new team the techniques of this very popular trade. The comprehensive, very
intensive training program at Strand Hotel Swakopund, in which O&L Leisure Hotels & Lodges has invested N$1,5 million, runs for 6 days a week, since 24 August through to 8 October - the day before opening on the 9th at 12 noon. The namib times had been invited from the start, and we’ve been witness to the passion and pride with which this process has been embraced by the top management of the company, who are engaging on every level. Amalia Boshoff, the Training & Quality Assurance Manager not only developed most of the 2 000+ standard operation procedures, but also developed the intense 45 day training program for the 235 “A-Team members, while Bruce Hutchison, Managing Director of O&L Leisure and Thomas Müller, General Manager Marketing & IT” created a motivational 3-hour interactive induction show. “It is paramount to create a shared vision as exquisite hosts of visitors - who put their most precious time – their free time and special moments and celebrations – in our hands. Like true Hosts our guests’ Needs, Wants and Desires must be understood and hosted to the best of our abilities – that is Who we Are, What are we, and What do we do – our Focus, our Vision, and our Passion,” says Hutchison. Amalia Boshoff says “The training program involves both regional and interna-
tional hospitality training specialists. Its primary objective is to provide the mainly Namibian employees recruited an opportunity to improve their professional Hospitality skills, allowing them to provide the best possible level of service to all Strand Hotel Swakopmund Hotel and Restaurant guests.” Katsuhiko Miyamoto, the passionate Sushi Master, is one of the international training specialists who have been brought on board. He’ll be present, and leading the Sushi team, when the hotel officially opens its doors at 12, on 9 October, and the first paying guests are hosted. Hutchison has confirmed that many international and South African companies have already booked out the hotel for incentive stays certain days in October and November. “The restaurants will only run on 50-60% capacity the first few days, and capacity will be gradually increased, until it runs on full capacity to provide the best possible hosting and food experience to our guests.” The construction main contractor will officially hand over the new Strand Hotel Swakopmund to the owner on 15 September. On 9 October at 12 noon the doors will open and will, with its “special sense of place” become a part of the unique fibre of this popular, tourist destination in Namibia.

WALVIS BAY, 1 September - The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has continuously engaged individual fishing right holders and other operators in the fishing industry on amendments to the Marine Resources Act of 2000. As such, the exercise is considered fruitful in terms of information sharing, the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) branch in Walvis Bay indicated over the weekend in response to NCCI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tarah Shaanika, who said Minister of Fisheries Bernard Esau did not consult the chamber or many other stakeholders on the amendments. The NCCI branch deputy president, John Savva issued a statement on Monday in consultation with branch president Tony Raw. This follows the debate in the National Council recently, during which amendments to the Marine Resources Act of 2000 to give sole power to the minister in the allocation of fishing quotas were discussed. The NCCI, lawyer Shakespeare Masiza on behalf of private firms, and Esau presented their arguments, with Shaanika telling English daily the Namibian that the chamber called for a transparent system in the allocation of quotas. The newspaper reported that Masiza’s clients’ concerns are linked to a
ruling handed down in the High Court in December 2014, which found that Esau acted beyond his powers when he allocated quotas to nonrights holders. The Walvis Bay branch in Monday’s statement said instead of criticising the minister, he must be congratulated for taking good care of Namibia’s natural resources and distributing it reasonably. “As the NCCI branch, we are happy with what the minister is doing because he consulted us on the changes to the Act,” the statement reads. The branch noted that the relationship between the chamber and the ministry has been and still is very fruitful and supportive, and Shaanika have been a friend and supporter of Esau. “We encourage any misunderstanding which arises to be corrected by Shaanika and their good relationship must continue,” the statement said. The NCCI branch advised that people should remain calm because negative criticism can give rise to anger or a feeling of insufficiency, expressing negative emotions that can only lead to more problems. “We must be fair; it is a

difficult job to be a Minister of Fisheries, it is almost impossible to make everybody happy,” Savva said. Shaanika on Monday maintained that the chamber was never consulted on this matter. He said there should be no contradictions within the NCCI but there might be individuals within the chamber who feel they were consulted. “The truth is that as NCCI, we were not consulted. They might have consulted the fishing industry but we represent more than just the fishing industry. There are stakeholders such as the banking and retail sectors and others who invested money. All these must be taken into account when changes are done,” Shaanika responded. He stressed that the branch is correct to say that there is no problem between the minister, ministry and NCCI, but the fact is that there were no consultations. The amendments to the Marine Resources Act of 2000 were passed in the National Assembly in July this year and are now being debated in the National Council. NAMPA

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

A generous donation Henties couple claim unfair dismissal at lodge Madelaine Laubscher
Gendev Group donated horse mackerel to three institutions in need in Walvis Bay on Tuesday. They also expressed their gratitude towards Nampol and the Reserve Force for the work they do to protect and serve the Erongo Region, through donations.
Mrs Corlize van Rensburg from Gendev (centre) with members from different institutions receiving the donation. and station based men and women, also needed to be thanked for their selfless deeds and the good work they are doing at the coast. To give recognition to our service providers is a neccesary task. What better way to show appreciation, than by giving something for the table,” she said. According to this spokesperson, the company is continuously involved in charity and community events that may present themselves during the year. “We have a substantial number of organisations which the company is sponsoring. We pride ourselves in our involvement in communi-
ty affairs. Social responsibilty is an important matter to us. If there ever would be a quiet period regarding events from the ministries or other organisations regarding donations, we ask employees involved in community institutions to find out if there is any need,” she said. She reiterated that the company took pleasure in being involved in community affairs and thanking service providers which are often forgotten. “We’ll never be too busy to involve ourselves with those in need or who deserve a thank you,” she concluded.
“They were on probation, but yet they treated customers with disrespect. They called customers stupid v…..s,” Ankama alleged. The deputy minister is being accused of unfairly dismissing the two employees. He is said to have telephoned them on Sunday, ordering them to leave his lodge, Namibia 2000 Lodge and Safaris, within three hours. The lodge is situated some 10km west of Oshakati. The dismissed employees, Rudi van Ginkel and his wife, Hannelie, were initially employed as managing couple of the lodge in July this year but were shortly after demoted to support staff. Ankama said van Ginkel and his wife were arrogant and quarrelsome with customers, despite being warned against it; something van Ginkel denies, saying they were never approached by
him or somebody else for misbehaving towards customers or for not doing their job properly. Speaking to Nampa at Oshakati on Wednesday, van Ginkel claimed that the deputy minister fired them without giving them reasons for their dismissal. Van Ginkel was employed as lodge manager at the beginning of last month, before he was demoted to lodge gardener two weeks later. His wife was employed as the head of catering at the lodge but she was also demoted to housekeeper. “All these were done for reasons only known by him (Ankama), but we accepted his decision without complaining,” van Ginkel cited. The couple from Henties Bay applied for the jobs at Ankama’s lodge after they saw an advertisement on Facebook that Ankama was look-

Gendev Group donated horse mackerel to Kids Haven, the Kuisebmond old age home and Huis van Brood. The group also thanked Nampol (the Walvis Bay station), and the Reservist police force in this way. According to a spokesperson at Gendev, the production and Logistics department management decided to donate this household product, packed in convenient one kilogram bags, to these institutions. “Our employees are involved in various institutions in a personal capacity and recognised the need in the communtiy. We felt it neccesary to donate this product in good faith, after we were notified by our employees about the need. We have previously made donations to the Walvis Bay SPCA. This time, we decided to donate a human consumable product to the needy. The police force, consisting of the reservists

They are now stranded at the Oneshila Service Station in Oshakati since Sunday and are claiming that they have nowhere to go because they sold their two houses in Henties Bay before they came to work at the lodge. The couple slept at the service station on Sunday night; paid their last N$845, for accommodation at the Oshakati
Country Hotel on Monday and workers of the Oneshila Service Station contributed money to pay for their accommodation at the Oshakati Guest Hotel on Tuesday night. “He was the whole time satisfied with my work, and he chased us away only after I restructured his lodge and took it to another level,” van Ginkel noted.
Hier ter sprake is spesifiek sommige groot kettingwinkels.

Secretaries spoilt for their hard work

Coastal Secretaries from different companies gathered at the Rössmund Golf Course Clubhouse on Wednesday for a treat which was organised and sponsored by the Coastal Office National. The function started off with tea at nine in the morning and then the Secretaries were divid-
ed into three groups to tour around the lodge. It was a different experience on a work day as
many of the secretaries only know their home and the office. They played golf, went on a
tour and were told more about Coastal Office National and the products that Coastal Office National got to offer to different companies depending on their needs. According to Shannon Duff, the Sales Representative of Coastal Office National, the main reason for the function was to thank and to recognise the secretaries for all the hard work they do. “We wanted them to feel spoilt because they are doing hard work” said Shannon. An office chair sponsored by Coastal Office National, one night’s accommodation at the Rössmund Lodge, lunch vouchers and many other prizes were up for grabs.

Wellness Statistics The Walvis Bay Corridor Group is a Smart Partner of the namib times-PEPFAR HIV-AIDS Campaign, and has lately become a very active role player in this campaign. The Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG), through their Wellness Service, continues to provide HIV/ AIDS and Primary Health Care services to truck drivers and mobile populations along our transport corridors. This is to ensure that more HIV positive cases are identified and referred to care, treatment and support programmes. The WBCG has shared its latest Wellness Statistics. “For the second quarter of this year (April –June 2015), our Wellness Service has reached 603 truck drivers, 746 sex workers and 1 290 members of the general public with testing and wellness screening
services. This is compared to the 552 truck drivers, 456 sex workers and 593 members of the general public reached during the first quarter (January – March 2015). The number of HIV positive cases identified in the second quarter was 156,
compared to the 107 cases from first quarter. We view our second quarterly outcome results positively because the majority of clients who accessed our services were new and have now been referred to access treatment services immediately regardless
of their CD4 measurements. We have also increased our service points throughout the country by ensuring that our mobile testing facilities visit various ‘hotspots’ where key and mobile populations find themselves. From the 156 HIV posi-
The WBCG Mobile Testing Unit tive cases identified in the second quarter, 5,8% were truck drivers, 8,4% were sex workers and 4,4% were members from the general population. From the first quarter’s 107 cases identified, 4,7% were truck drivers, 9,6 were sex workers and 6.2% were members from the general public. Together with our development partners such as the Society for Family Health ISFH), USAID, GIZ and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Servic-
es, our objective remains to identify as many HIV positive cases amongst the key and mobile populations and to eventually reduce HIV infection rates amongst these groups in Namibia. Our Public Private Partnership (PPP) model is strategic in terms of how we pool resources together in order to provide health services to these special groups. The combination of Mobile and Roadside Wellness Clinics is a unique approach in the Namibian context and the
WBCG prides itself on this approach as it is the first of its kind here. Our close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Services assists us through the provision of medical consumables and HIV test kits at no cost and we in turn assist the MoHSS by reducing public health burdens by providing a service to a group of people who will otherwise not be able to access health services at the Government hospitals due to the nature of their work.”

Be ‘Hear’ for Raymond Madelaine Laubscher
Raymond Strauss (15) of Walvis Bay has been hearing impaired since birth and his family is in dire need of financial assistance for an operation that will change his life for the better and help him to hear. The first fundraising event was initiated early this year and will be held Saturday evening at the International School, but according to Raymond’s grandmother, he will need a lot more funding in the future for an operation, a cochlear inplant, to be carried out at the age of 18. His mother, a single parent, along with his grandmother, elaborated on Saturday’s event. “We are hosting a Cowboy-themed dance and dinner on Saturday. We booked various local artists for entertainment purposes, all in order to raise funds for Raymond. We will however need more financial assistance as one event will definitely not cover the cost of the cochlear inplant,” the family said. His mother discovered he could not hear when was an infant. “I realised he could not hear when he did not react to the rattling sounds of toys. The cost of the operation is extremely high. We

It is evident that we will need a lot more funds at this stage. He was recentlty sponsored with one hearing aid which cost approximately N$22 000. A medical practitioner said he will need another hearing aid at this stage and when he turns 18, he will need the cochlear inplant. He has no medical aid and we are financially incapable to assist him on our own. Therefore we need help ,” she said. According to Raymond’s family he is not receiving any treatment at the moment. “He communicates with us in his own way. He uses hand gestures to show us what he wants. He usually only spends his time playing on a computer,” she said. A trust fund was recently opened for Raymond and according to the fami-
ly, apart from Saturday’s fund-raising event, they will have to host more events in order to help him live a normal life. “We’ll welcome any help from the public. Anyone who wants to donate funds can donate to the Sanlam Namibia Unit Trust Premkims. We also want to express our sincere gratitude towards all our sponsors for Saturday’s event. Without the public’s help we would not have been able to carry the costs. He is a bright boy, especially with a computer. Please help us give him a better future,” they concluded. The Government Institutions Pension Fund (GIPF) is a defined benefit fund that provides guaranteed pension benefits to its members. This means that should liabilities exceed its assets, the employer undertakes to cover for the shortfall. GIPF is the largest pension fund in Namibia—with an asset base of N$88 billion—and provides services to about 127,000 members and their beneficiaries in the form of retirement, ill-health, disability, retrenchment, death and funeral related benefits. The members of GIPF are government civil servants as well as employees of other participating institutions. A key component of the Fund’s Corporate Strategy is to ensure that its members are well educated and aware about their benefits, claim procedures and the Rules of the Fund. This strategy also falls in line with good corporate governance. On this platform, we will run a series of “Know Your Benefits” extracts around frequently asked questions posed by our members. The aim is to ensure that members are more knowledgeable about their benefits and that the information shared will smoothen the benefits claiming process and help the Fund to deliver effective customer service. In this edition we will talk about death before retirement. What happens if a member passes on before retirement? - GIPF will pay out death benefits to all qualifying dependants and beneficiaries of the member. - The death benefit will be paid out as follows: • Tax-free lump sum of 2x annual salary of the deceased member; • Qualifying spouse’s pension: 40% of annual salary, payable lifelong; • Qualifying children’s pension up to a maximum of 30% of annual salary for married members; • Qualifying children’s pension up to maximum of 60% of annual salary for single members.
2
*If a member has not left any dependants, the total pension benefit is paid into the estate account as a lump sum.

ART EXHIBITIONS
The walVISfees started 4 years ago with the goal of being “a festival for Walvis Bay, obviously to raise money for a charity, to set up a nice, big party, but with a difference, and to make sure it is for the whole family and community.” With humble beginnings we have been able to host a festival for the whole family, with sport, sports, entertainment and lots of food, especially fish, our natural resource! walVISfees is proudly involved with a Walvis Bay recipe book, “hooked”, by Christine Smit, with pictures by Volker, Pesch and Seaworks. The walVISfees will start as always with a “Wine Auction” on Wednesday 30 September 2015. This event include a Wine tasting by the Wine Valley of Herco Marketing with nice background music by Margariet Swart, one of our own local talents. The idea is to give them an opportunity to grow their careers in music and at the same time supply a nice atmosphere at the wine tasting! Andries Vermeulen, one of the funniest South Africans, will be our guest and will host a small auction of special wines while a nice dinner will be served at the Town Hall Walvis Bay (book your seat in ad-
vance)! The festival at Jan Wilken will start on Friday afternoon, with a show by the funny talented South African Duo, Jakkals & Leo. The Kevin Leo & Jakkie Louw show contains ‘deep music’, like “Voshaarnooi”, as well as funny and crazy stuff some real ‘Kevin craziness.’ Good news is that the music will also be for the whole family. Local artist, Linette Booysen, will be in action as well, she needs no introduction, she’s our own Sara Theron! A nice “steak dinner”will be available (please book in advance at Stephney) and other light meals and a cash bar will be
available. There will be special activities for the kids to keep them busy while the parents enjoy a relaxing evening! The Saturday will be fun-packed with the following events, Etosha Fishing – the Lucky Star Marathon and Cycling challenge, Shotokan Karate Academy Coastals Championship the JSKA 2014 World Champ, De Wet Moolman, will be in action, and many more! The “Sterkman” competition, hosted by Will’s Gym, will be a highlight again, and a new on the block, Dog’s and Don’ts, will host a demonstration with dogs and an open competition (for
friendly dogs). Seaworks’ Seafood braai competition will always be the highlight for our coastal “Braaiers. So, if you think you know how to “Braai,” this is it! There will be a lot of speciality stalls, as well as a lot of kids’ entertainment, and their own special activity tent with lots and lots of fun & games. While all this will be happening around you, music and lots and lots of food will be available. New on the walVISfees, is the restaurant breakfast menu – Bacon & eggs will be served, so make sure you are early, to spoil yourself with a sumptuous breakfast at the festi-
val. Many different kinds of seafood, such as fish, calamari, sushi and the best fresh oysters. For the meat eater, we’ll have nice “sosaties” and “braaivleis”. Traditional Pancakes and “Poeding” is on the list. To end this day, World Cup Rugby will be on the big screen at the festival! Sunday Service will also be a new item on the events calender. That is how we’ll conclude the festival on the Sunday. Ds Jacques Myburgh will officiate, in the big tent!
* Every Saturday: Open Air Arts Exhibition at the Mole next to Tennis courts in Swakopmund. Oil paintings - weather permitting. * Permanent Collection: Woermann Haus Gallery in Bismarck Street. Coastal Singer through to Namibia’s Got Talent semi-finals Sharlien Tjambari
On Saturday, 28 August, Alina Engelhard and her mother, Nicole drove to Windhoek for the first round of Namibia’s Got Talent (NAMGT) auditions which was scheduled for 28-29 August 2015. The auditions took place at the Windhoek Showgrounds. “We travelled on Saturday afternoon with the thought of Alina performing on Sunday. We got to Windhoek and decided to go
and check out the venue and there were only two boys in the queue” said Nicole. According to Alina, she decided to perform immediately as
she was ready and because she was told she could join the queue. “At that stage I quickly changed into my performing costume and because there was no time to run back to the car to get my shoes, I wore my mother’s shoes, ” said the excited Alina. Nicole said they came to know of the auditions through an advertisement which was placed in the Algemeine Zeitung. Alina dreams of becoming a famous singer and sees this (NAMGT) as an opportunity towards making her dreams come true. After performing her song, Skinny love by Birdy, she won herself a green ticket to the semi-finals. Alina was thrilled and overwhelmed when she got three thumbs ups from the judges. That was all she needed to go through to the semi-finals. After realising the talent of the Namibian people, NAMGT was created and is produced by Emmi Shivute, a Namibian Social Entrepreneur
of Evergreen Welles Solutions, who is also in the judging panel. According to Shivute, there is no discrimination; the competition is open to any Namibian above eight years old from any background, with any special talent. Two most popular acts from each semifinal round will win a position in the final, after all acts have performed, SMS lines will open for voting. After the votes have been counted, the act with the highest number of public votes will automatically qualify for the final place. Then it will be up to the judges to choose a winner of NAMGT. The next and last round of NAMGT auditions will take place on 12-13 September, with the first session starting from 08:00 -13:00 and the second session resuming at 14:00 till 18:00. The finals will be somewhere in November at NTN in Windhoek. 250 people showed up for the first round of auditions last weekend, of which 80 auditioned.

CAN Chief Executive Officer Rolf Hansen said in a media statement issued on Monday that September is the official “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month” and Namibia will take part in this event for the first time. “Namibia will be the first African country to join the ‘Yellow and Gold in the fight against Childhood Cancer’ campaign,” he said. Hansen said for the entire month of September CAN, through its Children with Cancer in Namibia (Chica) wing, will have media campaigns and talks about childhood cancer. At the same time, the Maerua Mall office tower will be illuminated with a golden light to help create awareness of the fight against childhood cancer

“THE KITCHEN” COULD MAKE OR BREAK A SALE! Believe it or not, when you use the word “kitchen” many people have very different interpretations thereof and prone to be “culture”-related. In the “old days” our kitchens were more than the place of cooking & baking as it also served as the family's “boardroom” where a lot of gobble, gossip and chatting took place whilst the radio was playing. It was the “informal lounge” for family & friends and the advertised “kitchen tables with chairs” was viewed with great interest in fitting the family's lifestyle. Many of us will recall those days with lots of stories to tell! However, the expand of technological applications in our household today, changed the whole composition of a “modern” house. Nowadays we have a “TV – room / Lounge” calling it the “Living Area (Open Plan), an “Indoor” BBQ (Barbeque) has preference over “outside', a door which directly links the garage(s) and house (often via the kitchen) is a convenience feature. Most importantly, in today's day and age, “the kitchen” ever so often “sells a house”. To this end we advise you on - HOW TO GIVE YOUR KITCHEN A MAKEOVER WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK. Start with – Freshen up your kitchen walls – A fresh coat of paint works wonders. Get some clever inexpensive ideas from various available glossy magazines where they portray colours and techniques to compliment the rest of the fitted finishing. Replace the work surface – Take a close look at this surface as it could appear worn and drab. Although replacing of the work surface would seem a bit costly, it might be just worth the effort as it is prone to give the kitchen a “new look” and enhance the saleability of your house. Change the cabinet fronts – there are several ways to do this. For example, if the doors are flat, add moulding to give the illusion of a panelled door. This can be done inexpensively using screen moulding. If you have panelled doors, consider removing some panels and replace with glass (e.g. plain or faux stained). Get creative with knobs, handles and taps – This is very easy but ensure that the shapes, sizes, colour and design is complimenting re rest of the kitchen's composition. New flooring – Gone are the days of vinyl type tiles and best is to consider ceramic tiles. Steer way from darker and/or patterned tiles as it has an effect on presenting “space” in the kitchen. Buff appliances – Tackle those appliances in the kitchen such as stoves, fridges, kettles, toasters, etc. and clean them. Buff them to look good and shiny (if possible) as it will contribute to a hygienic appearance of the kitchen. Make your kitchen lighter - Lighting can make or break your kitchen. By correctly increasing or directing the lighting with the right type of fitting can add an entirely new dynamic to the kitchen. You might just be surprised as to how much a made-over kitchen enhances the value perception of an older house. Should you require any further information or advise re these topics or any other property related matter, contact us on (064) 221000 or e-mail: anjo@iway.na.

Fireworks Expected at Dressage & ShowJumping Bonanza in Okahandja With over a hundred horses gathered at the Reitclub Okahandja premises this coming weekend, fireworks are expected in both dressage and showjumping over three days of competition in one of the oldest and most popular annual events on the Namibian Equestrian Calendar. Starting with the preliminary dressages this morning, the tourney is one of the few to offer dressage riders a host of events to compete in. Apart from the large number of starters in the preliminary and novice classes, the elementary, medium and advance events being ridden by experienced and well-schooled horse and rider combinations on Saturday and Sunday should provide spectators with a feast for the eye. Riders like Gesa Flemming, Sumari Piepmeyer and Franziska Leinberger will be out to show their competitors just how long a way they have come since rid-
ing their first events under the large camelthorn trees of the main dressage arena decades ago. In the showjumping arena the Derby on Saturday afternoon should be the most spectacular event of the tournament with 18 competitors attempting the difficult and long course that includes the water jump, table and devil’s dyke over heights of one metre, 1,10m and 1,20m. Among them equestrian brand names such as Künzle, Fischer, Falk, Hasse, and Nghinamito. Large numbers of competitors in the 70, 80 and 90cm show jumping classes should make for exciting
Small but Smart – Equestrians meet for Three Phase Event at Claratal
Annette Künzle, Barbara Hasse, Ruth Lowe and Linda Freyer showed excellent performances at Claratal over the weekend in a small field of competitors taking part in the competition and nail-bit- last Three Phase Event before the Namibian Championship in this equestrian discipline ing jump-offs with riders at Otjiwarongo in October. from Tsumeb, Otjiwarongo, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Windhoek squaring off against each other. The magic of a fancy dress ride has drawn the youngest riders, while the grooms will be out to show who is best at caring for a horse in the grooms competition. The action-packed weekend at the Reitclub Okahandja will be rounded off with Sunday Lunch accompanied by the eye-catching Final Parade and presentation of Special Trophies and Prizes.
Künzle and her stallion Rolling Thunder presented themselves in top form. After trailing Franziska Leinberger and Camelot by seven points after the dressage in the 1,00metre category, the pair from the coast covered good ground over the 2,5km cross country course and cleared all 24 jumps effortlessly to end with a total of -66 points. Leinberger notched up 20 jumping and 31 time penalties, thus having to bow
to the superior fitness of her competitor. In the category over 90cm mother and daughter Annette and Linda Freyer competed against each other, the latter taking the laurels on her chestnut Fire Flight with a final tally of -66. The 80cm category was a hotly contested affair with Barbara Hasse and Locarno No Limit presenting an excellent dressage (-44) and a clearround in the show jumping event on the
grounds of Gymkhana Club Windhoek on Saturday before heading out south west of Windhoek to tackle the cross-country track over 1 comma 785 km and 19 obstacles on Sunday morning. Here eventing delegate of the Namibian Equestrian Federation (NAMEF) Ruth Lowe and her mare ICT Leading Lady led by example remaining clear over the well-prepared and somewhat daunting obstacles and staying within the 460metres per
minute ground speed. Hasse was clear over the obstacles as well, but incurred four time penalties (one penalty for every 2.5 seconds over the time limit) bringing her total tally to -48, still enough to take the win ahead of Lowe on a final tally of -53. The children’s event over 80cm was won by Linda Freyer on Claratal Chromatic, who after a good dressage remained clear in the arena and the cross country.

Swapo honours Danny Boy Marshallino Beukes The Swakopmund boxer and international champion, Felisiano Albino (26), better known as Danny Boy, finally got the acknowledgement and honour he deserves, from some of the leaders in the Erongo Region. The Swapo Party (Erongo) has called a press conference in order to pay tribute to Danny Boy, who won the International Boxing Federation’s Continental Africa title on 26 August at Ondangwa, against a fighter from Malawi. Swapo’s Regional coordinator, Mr Philipus Heita dubbed the boxing sensation, “a true son of the soil” and remarked that Erongo and Namibia should be proud of the young man’s achievements. Heita encouraged the country’s youth to follow suit and participate
in sport activities. “Discipline and commitment are what made Danny Boy an international champion,” he added. Furthermore he urged the business fraternity to get on board and support sports codes in the country, and thus playing their part in the making of more professional sportsmen and women. He added that the Namibian government should also intervene and assist talented sports people. Heita informed the media that Danny Boy is planning to book a fight against a Chinese
opponent for 31 October and they want this fight to take place in the Erongo Region. This fight will be for the IBF Inter-Continental title and according to Danny Boy funds needed to host this international fight will add up to approximately N$500 000. The Swakopmund boxer’s impressive record of 21 fights – 18 wins, two losses and one draw speaks for itself and as he still is very young, the sky is the limit for the coastal boxing sensation.
