Walvis Bay State Hospital stays in hot water Madelaine Laubscher

After the Walvis Bay State Hospital has already been in hot water for allegedly delivering poor service to patients, another incident occurred recently and almost cost a local resident his life, after a motorcycle accident. According to the complainPage 3 ant’s family (who carried the man into the hospital) they were very disappointed with the poor service they received. “My uncle fell with a motorcycle and had to be rushed to the State hospital, because he does not have a medical aid. We noticed it was very serious, as blood Bladsy 4 was coming out of his ears and nose and he was nearDerek Klazen's ly unconscious. There was nobody at the entrance replacement to refer us to the casualty inaugurated section. We walked past the entrance and saw there were nurses at the casualty unit. There were six people in the queue, but they were not emergency patients. One of the nurses simply told us that my uncle must sit down and wait for a docPage 5 tor to arrive, although they see that he needed Franco returns could immediate emergency asfrom Italy sistance.

They did not even attempt to have a look at him. I thus decided to take him to a private hospital. There were no ambulances available. A taxi driver then offered to take us to a private hospital,” a family member said. The newspaper contacted the Ministry of Health and Social Services who commented “the patient must lay a formal complaint with the Regional Health Director of the Erongo Region for this case to be investigated.” According to the said patient, he was in the private hospital for three days, which leaves him with a bill mounting up to N$25 000. “I was not fully conscious at the time I was taken to hospital. All I remember is that the doctor at the private hospital told me I am lucky to be alive. My skull broke

I would rather go recover at home than set my foot at the State hospital again. I am very angry because the nurses at the State hospital treat patients as though they are doing them a favour,”

This can be ascribed to more complicated than anticipated repairs at the recent line and manhole collapses in Nangolo Mbumba Street and Pelican Street, Narraville. In Pelican Street, a new line had to be laid over a distance of 40m while in Nangolo Mbumba, a second manhole failure occurred soon after repairing the first one. Walvis Bay mayor condemns baby dumping At the ordinary Council Meeting held on Tuesday evening, the Mayor of Walvis Bay, Ms Uillika Nambahu (pictured), expressed her concern and disgust regarding baby dumping in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. “I have on several occasions called on

all those who require assistance during

pregnancy to seek urgent professional help in an effort to save the lives of innocent children on one hand, while on the other hand save themselves from experiencing life-long traumas associated with having taken an innocent life,” Nambahu said. She further noted that it is not a secret that teenage and unplanned pregnancies pose various challenges to both the expectant mother, the unborn child and the entire family, and also the society as a whole. The mayor spoke her mind and noted that there exists no acceptable

reason why a woman should conceal having given birth or resorting to illegal acts of abortion. “Speaking of which, I have noticed, also with great concern and disgust, the occurrence if illegal abortions taking place within our city involving the abuse of several pharmaceutical products which should not be made available for such purposes. In many instances, these pharmaceutical products are sold without shame as they are passed between seller and buyer in broad-daylight and without

condemnation by those who present during these transactions,” Mayor Nambahu continued. “Abortions and all other associated immoral acts remain illegal in Namibia and I want to take this opportunity to warn those persons making themselves guilty of these and other criminal acts to desist from it immediately, or face risk of losing their liberties through imprisonment. At this juncture, I am not only concerned with those women who use these pro-ducts to terminate pregnancies, but I am

also condemning whoever is assisting them in supplying or accessing these and similar products. In light of the above I would like to place a call to our law enforcement agents including the Namibian Police to implement effective and efficient operational strategies so that those who are making themselves guilty of this practice are brought to book without delay,” was the mayor's strong message. She also repeated her message to all those who live in informal shelters across Walvis Bay to

Case against Deputy Commissioner’s menace withdrawn Mavourlene Gaes

Nestor Katangolo (38) appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s court on Tuesday, following an assault by threat charge against him. The accused threatened to kill Nampol’s Deputy Commissioner (Erongo) Ottilie Kashuupulwa during April this year. Magistrate Vicky Nicolaidis was presiding and the case against him was

withdrawn by state prosecutor, Mclean Macsko Handjaba.

It was noted that the State will pursue a breach of peace order.

Katangolo, who also has several pending charges concerning illegal depend-

ence producing substances, almost found himself in deep water when

he allegedly threatened Kashuupulwa at the Erongo Police Regional Head-

quarters in Walvis Bay, saying he was going to deal with her.

It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

During a press briefing the chairman of the Confederation of Namibian Fishing Associations (CNFA), Mr Matti Tushishi Amukwa (pictured), informed the media that they received information that Namibia Marine Phosphate (NMP) have submitted a scientific Verification Study on the effects of seabed mining on the environment to the Environmental Commissioner’s office months ago, but that they have not received a copy yet. He also announced that the final copy of the Norwegian SINTEF Pilot Study Report commissioned by the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources is in the hands of Government and that the Namibian fishing industry is still waiting to receive a copy. The purpose of the meeting that was held in the board room of Beluga Fishing Company on Wednesday, was to update the media on the fishing industry’s position on phosphate mining. Mr Amukwa said that CNFA fully supports the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, in his battle to ensure an effective ongoing moratorium on marine phosphate mining. He added that this is essential so that proper independent on site research at sea can be undertaken by international expert scientists to assess potential marine phosphate mining impacts on the health of the Benguela Current ecosystem, before any decision is made on whether to give the green light to marine phosphate mining. He stated that there is an apparent view in the mining sector that since the 18 month phosphate mining moratorium imposed in September 2013 expired in March this year, Government should allow those with licenses, to start mining activities. He said that “The mining sector says it will undertake environmental monitoring research while marine mining, however, the fishing industry together with many other environmental concerned stakeholders shares the firm opinion that an independent research must occur before mining starts. An ongoing phosphate moratorium to allow effective scientific analysis is required, resulting in what is known as a strategic environmental assessment, so that an environmental baseline with necessary scientific supporting data is established first. And as a result of this, clear monitoring procedures and pollution standards can be put in place, before any potential mining occurs. Otherwise we sit with all the research happening during mining, clouding proper environmental analysis. The phosphate mining companies plan to suck up millions of tons of phosphate annually from the sea bottom using the dredging method. We have been told that at least 10% of these marine life potentially harmful pollutants will float back to the sea bottom in the process of loading it onto the dredger.” Mr Amukwa confirmed recent reports that Namibian oyster farms are monitoring their oyster food safety levels, and that a farm outside the bay towards Swakopmund has been finding that they have higher cadmium levels. Within Walvis Bay dredging is occurring as part of the harbour expansion development. Bottom sediment is sucked up potentially including trace heavy metals, and currently around 2 000 tons of dredge material is then dumped at sea daily off Pelican Point. There are indications that sediment from that dredge waste remains floating in the water column for a period of time, and is swept north by the strong northerly current and eaten by the oysters. This already raises alarm bells regarding potential marine phosphate mining dredging from a seafood safety perspective. He stated that they cannot have the future of the Namibian seafood industry put at risk and that proper, independently research must occur before any decision is given to go ahead with marine phosphate mining. He said that NMP, who intend to mine south

west of Walvis Bay, in 2012 had the marine section of their environmental impact assessment referred back by the Environmental Commissioner of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism due to a lack of proper public consultation and they understand that a key element of this was because only desktop research instead of onsite environmental research had been undertaken. In response, during June 2013, the then CEO of Namibia Marine Phosphates stated: “We are committed to ensuring that the Fishing Industry’s fears and concerns are addressed by providing the scientific evidence. The company is committing N$14 Million to the Verification Programme. We are confident that the science will speak for itself as already indicated in the Marine Environmental Impact Assessment”. Mr Amukwa announced that, “At the time we said we were concerned about this, because if NMP employs the scientists to complete the Verification Study, there is a high risk they will employ the right people in their eyes, to get them the answers they want that fit in with the EIA they have written. For there to be genuine transparency, the research must be independent - NMP cannot be both a referee and a player at the same time. That is why we support the phosphate mining moratorium so that rigorous independently undertaken at sea research can occur through internationally recognised scientists. Now, to our surprise, we hear through sources that NMP have completed the Verification Study, and that it was submitted to the Environmental Commissioner’s office months ago. We ask why have we not been officially notified? This document forms part of the official environmental impact assessment (EIA), which is supposed to be a transparent public process. Consequently, the document should be made available to all interested and affected parties that have registered their interest in the EIA, so that it can be properly assessed and comments submitted.” He then voiced the concern that the fact that they have never officially been told that this Verification Study has been submitted makes them worried and that they are concerned that Namibia Marine Phosphates is trying to avoid rigorous outside assessment of the document, and thereby shortcut the official process

of getting the environmental clearance for their EIA from the Environmental Commissioner’s office. If they are successful, they have the crucial piece of paper giving them the right to mine. Two weeks ago CNFA wrote to the Environmental Commissioner’s office requesting a copy of the Verification Study, and so far they have not heard anything back. He further stated that a crucial document that the Namibian fishing industry is also waiting to see is the final copy of the Norwegian SINTEF Pilot Study Report commissioned by the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources. This study, which is in the hands of Government, will define the research framework for a full strategic environmental assessment (SEA). To be effective, it will require Cabinet’s approval for the marine phosphate moratorium to be ongoing throughout this SEA study, and consequently is very important strategically to safeguard our future, and the ongoing health of the Benguela Current Ecosystem. In line with the Constitution of Namibia which states that the government of Namibia must maintain: “…ecosystems, essential ecological processes and biological diversity of Namibia and utilisation of living natural resources on a sustainable basis for the benefit of all Namibians, both present and future,” phosphate mining cannot be allowed because this would mean that as long as there is a reasonable level of uncertainty regarding possible damage to the ecosystem or the fishing industry. He said that, “As the Confederation of Namibian Fishing Associations said in 2013, Namibian Marine Phosphates is only 15% Namibian owned. If NMP’s marine phosphate mining project goes wrong, the foreign partners can walk away, and we in Namibia are left with the legacy. The environmental assessment process must occur transparently and properly. The Namibian fishing industry, from latest available employment figures, in 2013 directly employed 14 823 people, many of them women, and most of them Namibian. In 2014 it exported N$7.1 billion in seafood exports. Few industry sectors in Namibia can match these figures. Marine phosphate mining is only one sector in Namibia’s mining industry. It will be a technical business, relying on massive dredgers rather than people,

to do most of the work, and many of those who are employed will require skills not currently available in Namibia. While there is talk of creating a phosphoric acid processing plant in Lüderitz, those employed by fish processing plants in Lüderitz, and indirectly through Namport, are currently key contributors to the Lüderitz economy. It would make no sense if a marine phosphate industry starts up, and the fishing industry slowly fades away. Good environmental research must occur and monitoring safeguards put in place, before any marine phosphate mining is given the green light. The fishing industry, as well as the aquaculture industry, properly managed and supported by a healthy ecosystem, is based on a renewable resource that can run forever. The fact that New Zealand, an important fishing nation, has turned down the request for phosphate mining in its waters should also make us think! In making its decision, the Environmental Protection Agency Decision Making Committee (DMC), the body tasked with making a decision to mine or not, found that: “the DMC was left with a lack of certainty about the receiving environment and the adverse effects of the proposal on the environment and existing interests. In these circumstances the DMC was required by the legislation to “favour caution and environmental protection” when making its decision.” A crucial point in the New Zealand decision that is relevant to Namibia is the DMC’s conclusion that the project was: “… unlikely to generate more than a modest economic benefit to New Zealand and that the quantum and distribution of that benefit were uncertain. As against this, there would be significant and permanent adverse effects to the benthic environment and other potential environmental adverse effects. The DMC finds the economic benefits of the proposal to New Zealand to be insubstantial relative to potential adverse environmental effects of the proposal.” The following are pertinent quotes from the decision not to grant mining, which are relevant to Namibia: The behaviour of suspended sediment deposition contains a good deal of residual uncertainty in terms of the likely environmental outcomes. (The fact that Namibian aquaculture grown oysters are picking up higher levels of

cadmium downstream from dredging activities in Walvis Bay has potentially serious implications for the Namibian fishing industry). Given the importance of fish commercially as well as their role in the trophic web, the DMC find that the levels of knowledge and scale of impacts are uncertain and that the proposed conditions do not appropriately alleviate this concern. (This is why there needs to be an ongoing marine phosphate moratorium in Namibia so that an independently researched at sea strategic environmental assessment is properly undertaken). On the evidence it heard, the DMC was not persuaded that the potential impact on fishing interest would be more than moderate. Insufficient research had been done into the possible effects of the proposal on the benthic environment and wider marine environment. Scientific knowledge of the ecosystem is manifestly incomplete and the DMC does need to have sufficient, and sufficiently certain, information to identify and evaluate the risks involved in a proposal such as this. There was a large measure of agreement among experts in a range of fields that more certain information was needed on which to base assessments of the impact of the proposal on the environment and existing interests, which the DMC found persuasive. The DMC concludes that there would be significant and permanent adverse effects on the existing benthic environment. The DMC is convinced that the proposal would create significant and permanent adverse effects on the environment which are incapable of being avoided, remedied or mitigated, and that this aspect of sustainable management is of paramount concern in this instance. We are talking about the future of Namibia’s fishing industry, a renewable resource with mechanisms in place to ensure it is well managed, versus marine phosphate mining, which has a finite lifetime, and which has not occurred anywhere in the world so far.” He concluded by saying that before a decision is taken, there must be properly researched environmental safeguards in place so that they do not see degradation of the Benguela Ecosystem and the fishing industry put at risk.

The Sam Nujoma campus of the University of Namibia in Henties Bay hosted a five week long research based training event on the sustainable use and management of marine ecosystems. According to the Deputy Director of the Sam Nujoma campus, Hilkka Ndjaula, the African research discovery camp is designed to become a lasting post graduate and continuous education activity of Unam with a regional and international outreach. Ndjaula added that through its program, the camp implements Namibia national research priorities and trains postgraduate as well as doctoral candidates, technical personnel and experts in ocean sciences. “It will thus strengthen the human capacity for applied research on the understanding and the sustainable exploration of the economically important Benguela Upwelling System. It can also lead to discoveries of microorganisms with biotechnological potential” she explained. Ndjaula further noted that the group carried out actual research in the Benguela Upwelling Ecosystem by working together at sea on the R/V Mirabilis, and also in laboratories of the Unam Marine Research Centre where they analysed samples, exchanged research ideas and also shared their results in lectures and seminars. The presentations at the Symposium addressed questions that were related to metal retention in sediments, the search for antibiotics from the ocean, microbial communities and regulation of sulphur cycling, ancient and modern phosphate deposits, biodegradable plastics from microorganisms and others.

Adding that Regional Graduate Network in Oceanography (RGNO) assures a highest degree of professionalism that establishes and strengthens collaborations between regional and international institution, Ndjaula says it also opens doors for accessing research infrastructure that is not available at a Namibian institution at this time. “The courses are part of the crossnational capacity building mandate initiated by the international Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR). A number of researchers from Namibia and foreign Universities are spending their time and offering their skills for the well-being of society,” Ndjaula commented. The courses are an investment in education and research and thus increase the spreading of knowledge and the development of skills that can lead to discoveries and innovations. Financial support for the 4-year pilot period of this discovery and research cooperation and innovation project is guaranteed through grants from the Agouron Institute, research instrumentation, laboratory equipment and consumables are donated by the Swiss I-Research & Training Institute. Additional contributions come from the hosting institutions, the Universities of the participating instructors and the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, through its National Marine Information and Research Centre. Fourteen students from countries like Brazil, USA, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Estonia and Chile, as well as instructors and lecturers from six different countries attended this year's course.

Moratorium on Marine Mining extended for another three years by Government of the Northern Territory in Australia The Government of Australia’s Northern Territory imposed a three year moratorium on marine mining on 6 March 2012. The moratorium meant that exploration permits and mining permits for bulk materials in coastal waters would not be granted for the next three years - until 5 March 2015. During that three year period a comprehensive assessment on the potential impact of sea bed mining by the Environmental Protection Agency was started to determine the impact of exploration and mining activity associated with bulk Commodity Sea mining while the Government was seeking to work with the other States and Territories on developing a nationally consistent approach to seabed mining. On 9 March 2015 the moratorium was extended for another THREE years. The Minister for Mines and Energy, David Tollner, explained that the extension would allow for

reviews that are currently being undertaken by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to be completed. He added: “By taking a go-slow approach, we are looking after our unique Territorian lifestyle, while also protecting the marine flora and fauna. We are waiting on reviews by the EPA on the actual or potential impacts on our marine environment. This Government has decided the best course of action is to continue the current arrangements until all of the requested information is available for consideration. This is not a process this Government is willing to rush. Territorians enjoy a fantastic outdoor lifestyle, with boating and fishing a key part of that.” SWAKOPMUND MATTERS 16 - 2015

Conclusion If ARVs are working properly in our bodies, the viral load test will no longer detect the HIV in our blood and our viral load will be undetectable. This might occur after taking ARVs for at least two months. However, this does not mean we are cured. Small quantities of HIV, too small for the viral load test to detect, remain in our blood and the remaining HIV will start multiplying again if we stop taking our ARVs. Don’t let some churches fool us, saying we are cured from HIV and thus make us to stop taking our ARVs. You must continue to take your ARVs. There are still no cure for HIV/Aids.

have to use in future and we may run out of treatment options. Furthermore, drug resistant HIV can become a risk to the success of our National treatment programme and the community at large. We must aim to take our ARVs on time and also the precise quantity prescribed by our doctors, at least 95% of the time. Any reducing in the level of ARVs in our blood, caused by not taking our treatment on time, or by not taking the right number of pills, will allow HIV to

If the amount of ARVs in our blood drops, the HIV virus will be able to resist the effect of the drugs, and the virus will become resistant. If this should be the case, our ARVs will no longer be able to stop HIV from multiplying in our bodies. HIV can become resistant, not only to ARVs we are taking at the time, but also to all other similar types of drugs. Therefore, allowing the HIV in our blood to become resistant limits the ARVs which we might

Franco is back from Italy Madelaine Laubscher

Walvis Bay native, Franco Sivori, who is well known in the community for his diverse music-style, has recently returned from Italy where he visited for a few months. According to this talented musician he came back with a lot of new ideas and plans for coastal musicians. Franco is known for mastering the guitar and has directed many shows at the coast. However, according to him he wants to do much more. “I just came back from Italy where I had two concerts for the Rotary Club International. I will be performing in

Franco Sivori Omaruru on 6 June and I plan to do many more concerts, events and shows for the coming months. I will be doing a variety of European music, rock, country, traditional and I will be glad if some local club will be willing to accommodate me and discuss these

ideas with me,” he said. “Collaboration with other local musicians and singers/writers will be welcome. I also have a recording studio where people can be recorded on a professional level. Advertising, videos\ audio for the radio or television adverts can

also be done there, as everything is really done professionally. It is hard to explain in detail at the moment, as it is difficult to make the project ideas I have a reality. Therefore I welcome others to contact me. I am also gladly willing to help the community

with charity events such as the Music Festival that will be held on 27 June, for example,” he remarked. Franco has released albums in the past and his wish is for the music industry at the coast to expand much more.

Her fascination with Namibian fauna such as birds, wildlife, marine life, flora and the icy South Atlantic Ocean is similarly depicted in detail. About Feeza Jazri During her childhood in Malaysia, her grandmother instilled in Feeza a desire to creatively express herself on canvas using oil and acrylic paints. Feeza further supple-

mented her creative expression during adulthood with private art courses and workshops. More than a year ago, Feeza, her two-year old daughter, Sara, and her husband, Professor Husin Jazri, a lecturer at the Polytechnic of Namibia, arrived in Namibia under the impression that Namibia was like any other African country. Private sector supporting grid stability On 18 May, another PV Solar project installed by NEC Power & Pumps (Namibian Engineering Corporation) was commissioned, this time at The Food Lover's Market Centre, Swakopmund. Although it might be assumed that installing a Photovoltaic-System at the coast will not be costeffective due to majority of the days being misty, it has shown that monthly outputs at other project sites in Swakopmund have exceeded estimates. The installed solar system will cover around 40% of the Clients day time power demand and will have a payback period of around 6 years. The project installation commenced in April and included a 208 kWp Solar grid-tied system coupled with a 450 kVA Backup Generator. The solar modules installed are 260W Polycrystalline manufactured by Jinko Solar. A total of 800 solar panels have been installed on the northwest, east and southeast facing roofs of the Fruit & Veg City Food Lover's Market. These high-performance 60 cell/polycrystalline photovoltaic modules are designed for long lasting performance (up to 30 years) with very little maintenance required. An industry leading 10 years product warranty and 25 years output warranty of 80% of the nominal power is included as part of the package. Twelve three-phase SMA Sunny Tripower inverters have been installed. These are cutting-edge and highly reliable solar inverters with a maximum efficiency of 98.2 %. A SMA Sunny Webbox continuously collects all the data from the inverters on the system side, thereby keeping the installer and Client informed of the system's status and power produced at any given time. The data logger and display allows the PV systems' data to be conveniently and easily checked, giving system operators a clear overview of their solar energy system at all times. The Food Lover's Market Centre Swakopmund can expect an estimated yield of 324 500 kWh/year. In the event of a power failure by ErongoRed, a 450 kVA Volvo Backup Generator has been installed by NEC on-top of the centre's substation, to cover the power needs of the entire complex. The Generator is housed in a weather proof new Generator building and has been designed for long service life with build-in control mechanism to prevent damage to the Generator by harsh use or overload. A 5 year service agreement was included for the Clients peace of mind, which can be extended to 25 years. NEC Power & Pumps strives to help create a solar future in Namibia and supplies solar solutions to both industry, commercial clients as well as Private home owners. Locker vom Hocker Ich muss...???

TOYOTA CONTINUES TO LEAD THE SALES RACE Toyota South Africa Motors retained its market leadership position during May, with 8,043 units sold which translates to 16.8% market share; while the brand also retained its market share of the overall Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment at 25.2%.

"Whilst competitors capatalised on Government and large fleet special deals, Toyota is satisfied with our performance during May and achieving a fifth consecutive month of market leadership," says Calvyn Hamman, Toyota South Africa's Senior Vice President for Sales & Marketing, adding that Dealer Channel sales for Toyota's core products (including Hilux, Corolla and Fortuner) exceeds 75% of all sales. "This is particularly important for us as it shows a solid commitment from our Dealer Network in terms of sales and indicates a level of customer loyalty which we welcome," he says. For the second consecutive month the overall the market showed a slight decline of 3.2% if compared to the same period last year, with the passenger segment showing a decline of 5.4%. Says Hamman: "The decline in specifically the passenger segment shows a level of caution with the wider car-buying public - this can be attributed to uncertainty around fuel prices, utility prices, imminent interest rate increases and vehicle price increase," says Hamman, adding that Toyota's used

vehicle brand, Automark, recorded 3,418 units sold during May; slightly up on the previous month. "This trend, coupled with a move to smaller, entry-level vehicles underlines consumers' cautious behaviour in the light of economic uncertainty." Another worrying trend is the continuous decline in Car Rental sales which has deteriorated by 19.5% compared to the same period last year. "While this decline can partially be attributed to purchase cycles, one has to think about the impact of new travel legislation on tourism-led industries such as car rental companies," says Hamman. On the Trucks front, Hino South Africa achieved a solid 316 units sold, placing the brand in third position with a market share of just under 13%. "The investment-led medium and heavy commercial segments are showing a constant month-onmonth decline which can be mainly attributed to the reduction in purchase due to replacement cycles which usually works on a 5-year basis, coupled with a general decline in business confidence," says Hamman. Top performers from the Toyota stable included the Hilux (2,608 units), Corolla/Auris/Quest combination (1,400 units) and RAV 4 which continues to lead the Small Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) sales race with 416 units finding a home during May.

Lean, Stylish, Innovative: The New Opel Astra - Fit for Fun Opel and compact class cars - this specific success story starts with the Kadett in 1936 and will be continued with the new Astra, the eleventh generation of an Opel compact class car. So far, 24 million Kadett and Astra compact class models have left the plants. And now Opel is ready to add a new chapter to the history of its bestseller. The next generation Astra is based on an allnew lightweight vehicle architecture, will only be driven by latest generation engines and offers features pre-

viously only known from higher segments. The lean design makes the new Astra look more athletic than ever before. To put it briefly, the new Astra combines efficiency with elegance and will redefine the compact class segment with its innovations. The Opel Astra will celebrate its world premiere at the International Motor

Show in Frankfurt this spring (September 17 to 27). "Three values are decisive for the new Astra efficiency, innovation and dynamic performance," said Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. "Our engineers developed it from the proverbial white sheet of paper. The new Astra is up to 200 kilograms lighter than its predecessor - and its athletic design makes this outwardly visible. Its dimensions are smaller but both spaciousness and comfort have been increased considerably. Under the hood the Astra will only feature engines of the latest generation. Numerous technologies and assistance systems from higher segments increase the comfort and safety of the Astra passengers, with our personal connectivity and service assistant Opel OnStar, ultra-modern phone integration and the ground-breaking new adaptive full-LED matrix light IntelliLux leading the way. Saving where it counts: The new vehicle architecture

Lighter, more frugal and agile and at the same time even more comfortable the new Opel Astra meets all of these demands thanks to its successful fitness program. Only the best: The latest powertrain portfolio The engine in the new Opel Astra supports this claim. Under the bonnet of every new Astra a member of the completely new engine portfolio can be found. Outputs range from 70 kW to 147 kW. The diesel and gasoline engines with a displacement of up to 1.6 litres all have three things in common: they

combine highest efficiency with excellent responsiveness and running smoothness. Athletic design meets spaciousness: The perfect Astra symbiosis The design of the new Astra also depicts efficiency and once again the Monza Concept was the role model. The evolution of the Opel design philosophy 'Sculptural Artistry meets German Precision' ensures that the new Astra catches the eye with a lighter, more athletic appearance instead of a muscular look. The all-new Opel Astra is not only safer, more

comfortable, more attractive and more modern than ever before, it is also lighter, more agile, more aerodynamic and more efficient in every sense of the word. It is Opel's road to the

future. The new Opel Astra is under consideration for introduction in Southern Africa in 2016. Model range, specification, and pricing will be announced closer to launch.

Australian rugby team hooks up with Sharks Marshallino Beukes

Swakopmund Rugby Club, better known as the West Coast Sharks, is in the process of making history, after they clinched a player - exchange agreement with a prominent Australian rugby club. The agreement caters for five of the Swakopmund based players travelling to Australia to play their rugby for the Australian team and vice versa. According to the Sharks’ chairperson, Mr Winton van der Westhuizen, the exchange agreement will be valid for a period of six months. During August players will start off with trials, where after ten of them will be selected for the final trials. Van der Westhuizen noted

that very strict criteria will be imposed when selecting the players. The lucky five will be announced during January next year and will depart to Sydney, Australia, in the same month. The Australian team will be responsible for the Namibians’ accommodation, food etcetera and to keep their end of the bargain, the Sharks will do the same with the Australian players. This will be a great opportunity for the Swakopmund players

to showcase their skills in Australia, which is legendary for its high - level rugby and they might catch the eye of rugby scouts from top level clubs. They will however be probed to sign a four – year contract with the Sharks, prior to their departure. The West Coast Sharks have started to make big waves in the Namibian rugby sphere, after their discontinuation in active participation during 2010. Partaking in the Namibia

Rugby Union’s First Division, since the beginning of this season, the Sharks managed to win five of their seven games, until now. They also hosted a very successful SA Legends weekend earlier this year, where South African rugby legends, Percy Montgomery, Ian Macintosh, Peter Muller and Dale Sandton were the invited guests. The club’s main objective is to develop the sport of rugby in Namibia, also

focussing on talented players, whose skill development might be hampered due to a lack of finances. Youth development is also high on their agenda and their aim is to transfer this Swakopmund sport club into a family-friendly sporting institution. Interested players are invited to join the team. Practise sessions take place from Mondays to Thursdays at 18:00 (SFC sports grounds).

Namibia takes third place African Region 5 – Zone 6 Championships The Namibia karate union participated in the African regions 5 (zone six) championship in Johannesburg, South Africa over the weekend of 28, 29 and 30 May. Five countries participated being the host South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana. Namibia managed to come third after South Africa, being first, Botswana, second while Mozambique came fourth and Zimbabwe fifth. The competition was very tough as the South African and their neighbours Botswana managed to show their great experience. However Namibia juniors and under 13 years kids managed to counter their dominance by achieving gold and silver medals.

At least Namibia managed to produce new zone six champions in Kumite. Titus Nakombonde improving from his bronze medal he achieved last year in Zambia and the experienced Freddy Mwiya Jr retained his Kumite title which he won in 2012 and 2013. In the kata category, Katelin Martin and Rassie Esterhuisen reached the final in a very tense contest by which they managed to

achieve silver each. A great performance was also performed by Herman van Zyh, Nicolaas Swart, Nathan Lespoldt, Shakira Stein, Leo Zhang and Alexander Neidel by bringing home silver medals. The head coach of the national team Shihan Freddy Mwiya was very satisfied with the team's overall performance as the future looks good for karate-Namibia. Although a lot is needed in

the senior division, plans are underway as preparation for the All Africa Games has started. Namibia brought home a total of 30 medals, 2 gold, 9 silver and 19 bronze.
