Karibib Mining ACC-investigation nears end Marshallino Beukes

An Anti-Corruption Commission investigation, regarding Karibib Mining and Construction (KMC) allegedly colluding with government officials within the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) to obtain blasting certificates for six workers by fraudulent means, is on the verge of completion. The newspaper this week learned that the last witness’ statement was obtained and the dossier will be submitted to the Prosecutor General in about two weeks’ time. The case stems from an incident that was reported to the ACC in March 2012 and the dispute centres on six employees of the Karibib Mining and Construction (KMC) firm, who were enrolled with the Directorate of Mining to take the exam for a Blasting Certificate

for Open Cast Mines. Officials in the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) have also been implicated in the case, as it is strongly suspected that officials colluded in issuing fraudulent qualifications. One of the workers, who received an MME-approved blasting certificate on alleged fraudulent grounds, confirmed to this reporter that the certificates they acquired were issued illegally, because the candidates did not meet the

basic criterion. To get a blasting certificate, one must, in addition to passing the oral exam, first complete 120 shifts. However, it is alleged that the KMC candidates were called in and told to sign for a whole series of shifts on one day, in order to create the impression that they had met the legal requirements. Mine supervisors are by law required to have blasting certificates and the six KCM candidates were reportedly foremen and

pit controllers. It was further indicated by an inside source that when they were called into the office, they were asked to

sign the log book to indicate that they completed all the necessary shifts. He said that one of the new managers co-signed the

logbook to confirm that the candidates had completed the necessary shifts, even though that manager had only recently started at

The namib times last week reported about a Grade 10 pupil of Kuisebmond Secondary School, Lamour Isaacks, who was sent home from school, because of his dreadlocks. Lamour is raised under the Rastafarian Religion, and dreadlocks are mandatory to this religion. Lamour “Ras” senior, the pupil’s father informed the newspaper this week that he was notified by the Deputy Director of Education (Erongo) that his son may return to school on Wednesday. He further noted that

The founding CEO of the Namibian Standards Institution, Riundja Ali Kaakunga, says the NSI is anxiously looking forward to the day when the NSI is delegated as the competent authority to test and certify all fish and fishery products, including live bivalve molluscs.

Lamour and his dad this was only a temporary arrangement, as the matter will be discussed at a management meeting, next week, where after a final decision will be made. The aggrieved parent indicated that, “being a single parent,

it was hard to see the sadness in my child’s eyes the past week, but Wednesday morning all changed when he knew he was going back to school.” Lamour’s father still refuses to shave his son’s hair and stated that they Continue on page 2

At the moment the NSI is the Authority for all white fish. He says he foresees that the government will soon authorise the NSI to have the authority to cater for all those products, including live bivalve molluscs, that are traded and exported to other countries. He says the desire of the NSI is that any product coming from Namibia, and traded in Namibia or exported to other countries, will be NSI certified fit for human consumption. He says the NSI is ready to take the responsibility to ensure that all traded and exported products leaving

the country or entering the country are tested and safe for consumption. He says because of the incident late last year, when

Karibib Mining ACC-investigation nears end Continued from page 1 the company and could not have possibly known which shifts the workers had completed. Although the official blasting certificates from the MME were issued, these workers were not adept at blasting procedures and techniques, thus raising seri-

ous questions about industrial health and safety at the open pit mine. Furthermore, the candidates were supposedly tutored before travelling to Windhoek for the training and exam, and knew exactly what questions they

would be asked. As a result, none of the candidates failed the test. Although it could not yet be confirmed, it is strongly suspected that bribery may have been involved. The newspaper was also unofficially informed this week that

since the anti-corruption investigation kicked off, the Ministry of Mines and Energy allegedly did not allow any of the mine in question’s workers to undertake exams for blasting certificates. Contractors are apparently car-

rying out the blasting operations at the mine. Karibib Mining and Construction is a sub-contractor in the open pit mining operation at Langer Heinrich Uranium Mine, about 80 km east of Swakopmund.

stakeholders of the aquaculture industry, that tests will be conducted every two weeks, so that the NSI can declare the products are fit and safe for human consumption and export. The meeting has been labelled as a positive step by several stakeholders. Mr Kaakunga says it was just one particular batch of oysters that was rejected and not allowed into Hong Kong because of

what appeared to be too high levels of the heavy metal, cadmium, and that there was never a complete ban on oyster exports. He says since then, each and every batch of oysters has been tested by Hong Kong, and allowed into the country. He says the new oyster testing schedule will continue till later notice. Recent tests have shown that all Namibian oysters,

including the Walvis Bay Lagune oysters, are safe for human consumption. Mr Kaakunga has spoken to namib times in the Institution’s new building in Walvis Bay.

He says their accreditation confirmation to perform their duties on their new premises has been received recently and it is business as usual.

Swakop Uranium, MUN on par Sharlien Tjambari The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) will in future be the official bargaining unit for employees at Swakop Uranium Mine, after an agreement between the two parties was signed in Swakopmund. Swakopmund Uranium and MUN signed the Recognition and Procedural Agreement to the delight of the mine's workers, who recently had a protest march. The agreement aims to set down the governing principles for the relationship between Swakop Uranium and MUN in terms of the collective bargaining processes. The agreement also aims at fostering the relationship between the union and the company. At the signing ceremony, Swakop Uranium's Chief Executive Officer, Zheng Keping said “when an agreement is reached, it signals the willingness by all parties to foster closer relations”. He also said he is pleased that they were able to conclude the agreement at the onset of the year, thus contributing towards the high performing culture around the employee satisfaction, greater productivity and a hardworking and dedicated workforce striving for excellence. “This is a good beginning in terms of

lying down the principles of engagement between the parties. The MUN members are committed towards addressing their plight within the governing rules that is guiding our relationship, hence the initiation of the recognition process for the establishment of the representative voice” said the president of MUN, Mr Ismael Kasuto. Both the Union and Swakop Uranium recognise the importance of the health and safety of the workforce and in lying down of and adherence to standards, practices and procedures appropriate to these matters. Operators at Swakop Uranium's Husab mine recently handed over a petition to the management, demanding better wages, medical aid, housing allowance among others. The MUN, as the bargaining unit of the workers, will definitely look into this matter, one of the operators this week told namib times.

Namibia - country with the fastest growth in house prices in third quarter Namene Kalili, Senior Manager Research and Development at FNB Namibia Holdings says global property prices were muted in the third quarter of 2014 on the back of even economic growth across the globe. Kalili: “After lower than expected second quarter GDP growth and a slight improvement in volumes, the FNB house price index continued to bounce along the top through September 2014. House prices averaged N$768k, which is 21% higher than the same period last year as northern and coastal property prices increased during the month. Coastal property prices remained under pressure for the third consecutive month despite unusually high prices in the upper price segment. And although Windhoek property prices remained under pressure leading up to the much anticipated municipal land auction in October last year, the remainder of the towns continued to post varying degrees of positive price growth.” Volumes moved upwards, but remained well below pre financial crisis levels and were certainly not sufficient to meet demand. Furthermore, the volume growth was concentrated in sparsely populated markets,

while the populous regions had sluggish growth. Land delivery fell well short of the demand curve and although developers mortgaged a further 119 600m² of land with a maximum yield potential for 280 freestanding homes, this increased developer activity has not yet translated into meaning housing sup-ply. When looking at the central property prices, the FNB housing index states that these were back on the increase through September, with prices rising 16.4% year on year. At the coast, property prices fell for the third consecutive month as the seasonal slump set in. Prices fell by almost 5.5% month on month to N$741k. The decline was most notable in Swakopmund, where prices fell by 6%.

However, Walvis Bay and Henties Bay property prices remained buoyant and surprisingly higher than Swakopmund prices. Kalili ascribed this mainly to falling demand for large coastal homes, as volumes fell by 25%, while demand in the middle price segment continued to decelerate and contracting in the lower price segment. “After 8 consecutive months of price increases and prices increase from N$417k to N$554k in a space of 7 months, northern property prices finally contracted by 2.3% month on month. Prices in the upper price segment came under pressure, contracting by 9%, underpinned by falling demand. Middle and lower price segments registered marginal price increases due to weakening demand,” advises Kalili.

Namene Kalili, Senior Manager Research and Development at FNB Namibia Holdings

He added that the year to date data also showed dissipating inflationary pressures in the northern property market as fewer towns posted price growth in excess of 20%. “And finally southern property prices fell by 4% month on month to end the month at a median price of N$607k. Despite this short term contraction prices still remain 52% higher than last year, with very strong growth in Aranos, Keetmanshoop, Maiental and Lüderitz. But with 7 properties traded in the month, one can't read too much into this figure as the margins of error remain high,” he said.

“Operation bounce back”- Ministry of Education Mavourlene Gaes The Ministry of Education announced its plan to improve the Junior Secondary Certificate results at a stake holders meeting held last week at Swakopmund Primary school. According to the director of education in the Erongo Region, John /Awaseb, the Ministry is

planning a consultative meeting with their stakeholders in the region, on what action should be taken regarding the grade ten performance. The Erongo region has once again been placed at the eighth position in the JSC rankings, which makes it the second year they have scored 49% on the performance ranking list. This is regarded as unacceptable by the Director, especially for a region that used to obtain a 60% passing rate. “We have well-qualified

teachers and our principals and managers are experienced. Most of our Secondary schools are well resourced and it looks as though our schools are playing hide and seek. Maybe the time has come for us to come together and strategically forge a new direction if we want to improve on these results. I am suggesting a program such as operation bounce back” explained /Awaseb. He continued by raising focus on issues such as

accounting, and conducting extensive teaching training, the provision of detailed lesson plans and study guides, supporting extra tuition lessons for learners on weekends and school holidays, implementing the Alumni support programme to all schools and partnering up with the private sector and mines for classroom provision.” Under the guidance of Erongo Regional Council and with the support of the whole society, as well as the efforts of the education sector, we firmly believe that we could achieve more and push the region to a new peak,” concluded /Awaseb.

Alleged smuggling of goods into Walvis Bay Madelaine Laubscher

A trusted source told namib times that goods were allegedly smuggled into Walvis Bay on Saturday. According to the source a taxi driver was arrested after the perpetrator requested him to receive goods over the Namport fence during the night. After the newspaper investigated the matter, a member of the Walvis Bay Reaction Team (who was at the scene) confirmed that there had indeed been such an incident. “An eye witness saw flat screen televisions and clothing being handed by someone over the Namport fence to a taxi driver. The taxi driver realised they (he and a passenger) were seen and sped off. The eyewitness chased the taxi and subsequent-

ly called the Walvis Bay Reaction Team for backup. The driver of the taxi was arrested while the passenger fled on foot,” the member said. Nampol Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu has also confirmed the matter and said that one man was taken into custody but he could not confirm who the guilty party was that had handed the goods to the taxi driver. “The man that was taken into custody is Joseph Shipepe (25) and he was

charged with theft out of a motor vehicle,” he said. The Namport Public Relations Officer, Ms Jo-Ann Stevens, was contacted for comment. She was not aware of the situation at the time. After she investigated the matter she said, “the head of security confirmed to me that a taxi driver was arrested after he was seen taking flat screen televisions over the fence, however it is still only speculation that it came from our port,” she concluded.

Rape accused granted bail Mavourlene Gaes

A 41 year old man accused of rape made his second appearance in the Walvis Bay Magistrate's court yesterday. The man, whose name is known to the paper but being withheld by us on account of the sensitivity of this case, was apprehended and charged with rape after it was discovered he had been having sexual intercourse with his wife’s 15 year old sister. The incident was report-

ed to have taken place two weeks ago, after the victim’s sister left the accused and victim alone to go and visit a relative out of town. It was also reported that the accused, who has been living in the same house as the victim, had allegedly sexually abused the minor on sev-

eral occasions from December last year. The accused applied for bail which was set at N$3 500 by Magistrate Vicky Nicolaidis, and was given because he is the sole breadwinner of the family. The case was postponed to 30 March for further investigation.

I was astonished as this is not the way an employee should treat a customer. Thus I asked her to call someone that can speak Afrikaans, but she ignored me. A commotion transpired which led to two

other employees assisting me. I told them what the situation was and that I did pay my account therefore I saw no reason why my post box should have been locked. After they inspected the matter they came to the conclusion that the lady (who was rude to me) made a mistake by putting a lock on my post box, instead of someone else's post box that did not pay their account. This lady simply walked pas t me and uttered words 'these bloody whites'. I am utterly disappointed in the service at the Walvis Bay post office,” she said. According to the complainant her concern was that she is an

Afrikaans speaking senior citizen and feels that she has a right to speak her language, but she was allegedly ill treated because of it by an employee who did not deliver proper public service. “I understand that everyone can make mistakes, but if you are in a position to give public service it is expected of you to at least be well mannered. I was given new keys to the post box after the matter was resolved, but I am very upset about the way I was treated. My question is how can the government employ people who are ill mannered like that? It gave a very bad image to the post office in Walvis Bay. Where were the super-

visors when this happened? I received no apology at all even though she was the one who made the mistake and who treated me badly,” she said. The newspaper contacted a spokesperson at the post office on Friday who said “we cannot speak to the media. I will inform my superior about the issue. The Nampost Public Relations Officer, Mr Harold Akwenye later said “as a corporate institution we acknowledge that we have great responsibility towards our clients, communities and stakeholders. Nampost is committed to providing efficient and reliable services to its customers and we appreciate hearing

from our customers when our services fall below expected standards. The complaint regarding the service that our client received is very important to us. We want customers to enjoy conducting their business at all NamPost offices countrywide, so this complaint is a serious concern for us. First, let us express our deepest apologies. Our client deserves only the best service. Secondly, we have launched an investi-

gation on this matter regarding our staff behaviour and will take appropriate action,” he said. He also mentioned that they are aware that the said employee is not conversant in Afrikaans, but that she is trying her best to catch up with it as it is the language that the majority of Walvis Bay customers are convenient with. “She has been removed from her duty station. This is the first time such an incident was

reported to management. Thank you for reporting this matter. It will be of great help if our customers who experience below expected standards to report the matter to the post masters or regional managers. We value the role played by the media to educate and keep the public informed. Once again we would like to offer our apology to those clients affected,” he concluded.

Swakopmund Residents Association Newsletter

The first newsletter for the new year

The title “alderman” was bestowed on Councillor P Steinkopff representing our organisation in council for almost 11 years, by mayor J Kambueshe at the opening of the January meeting. Alderman Steinkopff has been on the opposition bench all the time, yet this did not deter him from making positive well-founded contributions during the years, setting an example of putting the town's interest above any other. Congratulations Alderman P Steinkopff, we are proud of you and know that it will be difficult to replace you once your term of office expires. The mayor deliberated on the parking problems during the past season, mentioning the additional parking area beyond Café Anton bringing relief to this problem and the area in front of State House having been paved and properly demarcated also welcomed by motorists. An ongoing problem is however the occupation of parking space by selfish people right in front of their business completely ignoring the 1hour time limit, traffic department should attend to this problem and let these culprits walk a few meters from the parking areas provided. The previous year ended with the Municipality having concluded a lot of street paving projects which we welcome. Quite a lot of new developments on the outskirts of town are provided with a nice infrastructure including paved streets where no taxpayer has settled up to now and no rates and taxes been col-

lected as yet. We understand that these developments are necessary to attract investors yet areas where people have been living for decades and contributed to the municipal coffers all the time are still waiting for the first pavers to be laid. We refer especially to the area around the previous Hansa Brewery, a slight drizzle turns these streets into mudpaths. Many problem of last year have been carried over into 2015, one of the burning issues being Erf 3486 which has a valuation of N$ ±2 million and council is prepared to rezone it and hand it to the Swapo party at a price of N$ 30 000. We have been objecting against this act of nepotism and selfenrichment for over a year now and herewith remind the public that we have Local Authority elections at the end of the year. Only councillors who put the town's interest above party interests should be elected to the chair. The Municipality surely had their hands full in supplying services during the festive season, but the mole area remains dirty and littered with rubbish before and after the season. Mayor J Kambueshe likes to refer to his town as an international holiday resort. The absolute absence of cleanliness in certain areas and dilapidation of public buildings both government and municipality owned, surely are no contribution to that title.

Once again Swakopmunders can not enjoy the advantages of having a swimming pool. The old pool at the mole should have been demolished some 5 years ago after lack of maintenance and proper management made it unsafe for the public. It still stands and rusts away, a monument of bad management and lack of authority to have the decision of demolishing the eyesore carried out. A few days ago our new “watercube” had to be closed because of repeated technical problems cropping up once again. Were all the building regulations observed and carried out during construction? Where were the authorities during construction time? The only consolation we have is that it was not public money used to build this flop. At the end January council meeting a very comprehensive Environmental Management Plan was presented and accepted by council. This plan clearly illustrates the ever increasing water consumption of our town but no mention is made of additional water production. The only idea is the takeover of the Areva water desalination plant by Namwater, which does not produce any additional water desperately needed for future development. Our neighbouring town years ago had ongoing serious problems with Namwater after they had taken over the Rooi-

bank system, almost daily one can read in the local papers about the problems various communities in

the country are experiencing with the water supply by Namwater, adding to the bad repu-

tation Namwater already has. We don't need a different supplier, but a reliable supplier instead

Obtaining Fishing

Permits

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Building rubble becoming a safety hazard

Madelaine Laubscher

A local resident from Walvis Bay shared her concern with the newspaper regarding the fact that for a long period of time, building rubble has become a danger to pedestrians and motorists, due to it being left in the street after the traffic department warned that it is prohibited.

According to her she has witnessed pedestrians having to walk in the street and putting themselves at risk because of no space for them to walk on the pavements. “The one pavement on both sides of 9th road, between 6th street and Sam Nujoma Avenue is a problem. The oth-

er two risk areas are behind Shoprite in 6th street. The chief traffic officer of Walvis Bay said he would not tolerate building rubble on pavements. However the bricks, containers and building rubble have been on the pavement for almost three months. Staff members at

Shoprite also use the pavement to store their pallets and to wash their trolleys. “I have seen pedestrians being forced to walk in the street and how they tried to pass, often dangerously, the large delivery trucks that are always parked there. When is our traffic department going to do

Pallets on the pavement forcing pedestrians to walk in the street something about this?” Platt, was made aware she asked. of the situation and The Chief of the according to him they Walvis Bay Traffic will attend to the situadepartment, Mr Eben tion immediately.

Etosha Fishing creates additional local jobs Staff reporter

Approximately 650 seasonal workers will acquire additional employment, for an estimated three weeks during next month, courtesy of Etosha Fishing, Namibian home of the Lucky Star canned pilchard brand. The jobs entail the processing of imported, quality frozen pilchards. Another 20 weeks of employment would be created during the course of the year with a remaining estimated 13 000 tonnes still to be imported, a media statement indicates. “We have been importing frozen pilchards for processing on local soil since 2010, which has tremendously contributed to the creation of additional local jobs,” said Etosha Fishing’s managing director, Mr Pieter Greeff. According to him, the company has imported

more than 20 000 metric tonnes of frozen pilchard since 2010, amounting to more than 40 weeks of additional employment for seasonal workers during the 2010 to 2014 period. “With our own pilchard resources under threat, Etosha Fishing has taken an alternative approach to ensuring the sustainability of Etosha Fishing and the sustainable development of our industry,” Greeff noted. According to him, their total allowable catch (TAC) of pilchard and horse mackerel only provides employment for about four months, from

about April to July. “We cannot afford to have our processing plant sit idle for the remainder of the year. Instead we are importing great volumes of whole round pilchards and cutlets to add value to in our country, which translates to employment for nearly the entire year,” says Greeff. Through these imports jobs are extended beyond June to at least November. He highlights that this innovative business thinking is not only directly in line with the government’s directive of value addition to our local ma-

rine resources, but further contributes to job creation and extension as well as the sustainable development of the local fishing industry. This clearly supports the government’s Vision 2030, specifically in terms of job creation and improving the quality of people’s lives to the level

Our Penguin safe at Mercury Island Liesl Losper

About a month ago namib times covered a story about the penguin which was found by Tommy Smit here in Walvis Bay. Our penguin is safe now on Mercury Island, Lüderitz. On Wednesday, the penguin was put in a big box and taken by Mark Boorman to NatMirc (Ministry of Fisheries in Swakopmund). From there it went onto the RV/ Mirabilis, the MFMR research vessel stationed in Walvis Bay. They arrived at Mercury Island on Thursday morning, 09:00. The penguin stayed there in the penguin pen and was tended by Willem van Zyl, a technical assistant at MFMR who is stationed on the island. On Friday afternoon t h e RV / ! A n i c h a b arrived at Mercury Island for a staff transfer and picked up Willem and the penguin. They arrived in Lüderitz at lunchtime on Saturday. On arrival the penguin was all excited to explore his new temporary home, the

small seabird rehabilitation facility at MFMR in Lüderitz. He was given some rehydrating fluids to help him recover from the second leg of his long journey, before having a large helping of sardines for supper later in the evening. In an interview with Jessica Kemper of the African Penguin Conservation Project she commented, “The purpose of sending the penguin to our facility is to exercise his injured left flipper. It is vital that his flippers are in top shape as penguins need them to dive up to about 80m deep to catch fish. This is not possible if your flipper is injured. By having a big pool to swim in, and me to watch that he is doing his exercises, the penguin can exercise the flipper intensively.” She continued, “He is

making great progress and is using his left flipper very nicely. I expect him to stay with me for about another two weeks, before he will be set free again among his penguin friends, probably at Halifax Island, which is close to Lüderitz. He is a very, very lucky penguin to have survived his injuries and to have been found and nursed back to health in time.” Jessica Kemper takes care of injured and oilpolluted seabirds, especial penguins, at the Lüderitz Seabird Rehabilitation Facility. On behalf of “our own Happy Feet” it is appropriate to say that the penguin is more than grateful to Tommy Smit, Alet Van Greunen, Marc Boorman, RV/Mirabilis, Willem van Zyl and Jessica Kemper for saving his life!

Geliefde Eerwaarde tree af ná 20 jaar Liesl Losper

Hy was baie betrokke in projekte soos die gemeente se ‘‘Oscar evening,’’ dankfeeste, sangtalentaande, ‘‘Race for Jesus’’ en

vroue-funksies.

Damian Sagner, the boy with the lion heart Community Reporter

We all know little Damian Sagner, the boy who was born with a very rare heart defect, where he has a hole in his heart and his main arterie has been switched. Many of us has walked this sad, yet precious journey with little Damian and his mom, Roswitha Hofmann-Sagner.

“Damian is my universe, but I promised myself to fight for the life of my child for his sake, not for mine. As long as he fights, I will not give up. Should the day come, where he lets me know: Mom, I am tired, I cannot go on… Only then.. I will stop.” This is just a slight insight from Ms Roswitha, on what happened from his last operation until now. “The 30 of October 2014, is a day, burned into my memory forever. The longest day of my life, the beginning of a new life. St Augustin, Bonn, at 7:00 the nurses brought me the hospital shirt Damian had to put on. The material so cold, so rough, so sterile. With tears in my eyes I took off his pajamas and put on the shirt. I could see in Dami-

an’s eyes that he knew what was coming. It was tearing me apart, preparing my child for the operation. The previous evening, I had to wash him with special soap and no cream, so that the red disinfection lotion would stay on his skin better. At 6:00 in the morning, I gave him a little water to drink from his bottle, holding him in my arms, praying that it would not be the last time. At 7:30 the nurse brought me the red juice Damian had to drink, it will make him drowsy in preparation for the anesthesia. At 7:45 two nurses came to take Damian to the operation theatre. He was sitting in his hospital bed as if he was in a cage. As we accompanied him, I could feel that

I started to shiver, I was in trance, as if we are bringing Damian to a slaughterhouse. When we arrived at the theatre, they were already waiting for him, I was crying so hard holding his hand and praying that the Lord will stay at my baby´s side and keep him save. Seeing him disappearing behind the doors was more than I could take. It took twelve hours before we were able to see our little boy again The surgeons and their team were fantastic. In regular intervals they came to us to let us know at what stage they are. In the afternoon at four o´ clock they let us know, that Damian's heart started beating independently after being on the heart-lung machine for a very long time. I had the feeling I could hear the beats through the walls. At 20:30 in the evening they called us into ICU to see Damian for a few minutes. I have seen him twice before in this condition and I knew what to expect. Through all the pipes, I saw my son and I was so happy. He was looking so good. My big boy has made it. The professor came to us and his diagnosis was: FULL CORRECTION! The procedure done on Damian was very rare and most cardiac surgeons will never do such an operation in

their professional life. We were very lucky to get the outstanding team in St Augustin Kinderklinik. The professor told us afterwards that this was a real challenge for him and he was not sure if they were able to save Damian’s life in the long term. It is always difficult with such complicated heart defects. Even when you make all possible tests, the open heart can still have some surprises left. Due to the first two operations in South Africa, Damian developed an unusual amount of scar tissue. The team was prepared, but were really shocked when they opened the breast and saw the real dimension of scar tissue. It took them nearly four hours only to cut their way into the heart. It was a massive amount and many surgeons would not be prepared to do the effort to open a heart like this.

Damian is alive, because a female surgeon, who helped us to come to Germany, planned this operation and was prepared to go all the way. That Damian survived these past two years is a miracle. Even the experts said we were very lucky. The Lord was very generous to us. For six weeks after surgery we stayed in the parents’ home next to the clinic. Making it possible for Damian to recover in some kind of home environment. I got taught how to test his blood daily and how to give his medication. In April another big checkup and heart catheterisation is our plan, then we will really know how Damian is doing and how his chances are of living a normal life. The word “Normal” will never exist in our life anymore. He will be okay and has a realistic chance of reaching adulthood, but he will

always need regular checkups. So many times Damian was near death and every time the Lord gave him a new chance. Damian, the fighter he is, took them and came out stronger and stronger. He never gives up. He takes all the challenges put upon him, teaching us adults how very important it is to live every moment to the fullest. He is like a sponge, absorbing his surrounding, changing it, and making it better. The support our family received from people all over Namibia is historical. Without the compassion, love, prayers and all kind of donations, Damian would not have survived. We as a family would not exist anymore. Damian keeps us going, without him, life would be meaningless for me. The Namibian support is unequal to anything in the world. I am

proud to be a Namibian. I am proud to live in a country where neighbours still look out for each other. Where your own needs are put in second place and the life of a child is more important. For me it is significant, together with Damian, to give hope to all families with sick children. To prove that there is hope, there are helping hands. Never lose faith, the Lord is with us, when we allow him into our lives. It is vital to stay positive, even if you feel the world falls apart around you. And the most important task, please, dear parents, go into yourself and remember, you fight for your child´s interest and needs – not your own... I always prayed, that when the time would come and my child is too tired to fight, I have the strength to let go with love in my heart.

Letter from the North -4

Drive Against Malaria in Namibia David Robertson has been spearheading the Drive Against Malaria for decades, and since 1999, Julia Samuel has been helping him – as promised, Julia has written us from the north of Namibia, to share the latest on their local campaign, that started in January.

Spectacular mountain roads We are heading north to remote communities around Epupa and Opuwa and cross some of the most diverse landscapes. We experience spectacular mountain roads with twists and turns that go on forever and magnificent scenery that simply takes our breath away. The main roads are in perfect condition. In other parts of Africa we faced appalling roads. Sometimes we could only cover 10 km a day! But Namibia is a country with better infrastructure. It also gives us the opportunity to view the beauty of Namibian wildlife, graceful giraffes, zebras and springbok. The tropical climate allows flora and fauna to be among the most wonderful in the world. Malaria growing concerns in the ‘far out’ communities But we are here for another reason. We are working along the border between Namibia and Angola, from Epupa to the Caprivri Strip to assist border crossing communities in coping with the devastating health impact, caused by Malaria. Drive Against Malaria’s response to the unfolding Malaria crisis in Africa, is to help contain the spread of infections and improve public health systems throughout central-, west- and southern Africa. We arrange meetings with the health sector, as Malaria is a growing concern in the far out communities in Namibia, and meet

dedicated health workers Barbara Kahiha, Dr Onesmo Angumbwike and Albertina Shanghala of the General Hospital Opuwo. The WHO’s work is so important. A child was reported ill of Malaria New Malaria infections among the rural communities are reported heading to Swartbooisdrif. We leave, together with Barbara and Albertina, early in the morning. A long dusty drive, but, unexpected, close to the Ehomba Mountains a man, who recognizes our special Malaria Land Rover from far, stands in the middle of the road and signs us to stop. A child has been reported very ill of Malaria. From this point we leave the main track, and turn west, over a long bumpy drive crossing rocks and dry river streams. We find the child in a small Himba settlement and decide to test the whole family on Malaria with the Rapid Diagnostic Blood test. Among them a six month old baby. With this blood test we take a sample of blood to trace the Malaria parasite. After taking the blood test, the baby shows to be infected! Without immediate treatment it could all end, very dramatically. We treat the baby with effective medicine. The Himba family is extremely grateful that we have arrived in time to save the baby. Malaria treat far from over We explain to the people, the

Anopheles mosquito is not the carrier of the deadly Malaria parasite. It’s only a transmitter. We have to monitor the people who carry the parasite and eliminate with effective medicines. In 2013 the health sector in Namibia was hopeful to reach the elimination goals. But the threat was far from over. The success has taken away the attention from Malaria. Suddenly, in 2014, over 20 000 cases were reported along the border. Malaria is a completely treatable disease, but with losing attention, experts fear its infection tolls will reach devastating numbers. The situation of the tribes in extreme remote areas is unknown. Due to the vast Namibian infrastructure, and traveling tribes, it has now become more difficult to keep track of who has malaria. Now it’s feared, more children will unnecessarily succumb to the deadly parasite. Most malaria victims are children. We are all in agreement that no child should suffer from Malaria, because we have the tools to prevent and treat it. Drive Against Malaria has worked extensively in the battle against Malaria since launching in 1988. Determined to bring comprehensive Malaria interventions to these “far out” communities, Drive Against Malaria started a program in this area, with the focus on Malaria control and elimination.

Mavourlene Gaes

Nepolo Silvanus is a 19 year old, blessed with the wonderful gift of being able to not only design clothes but also to sew them into a masterpiece. Nepolo explains that the birth of his talent in 2012 was not only confusing but unusual because of the way everything happened. “I had a friend who was participating in our school’s annual beauty pageant (Miss Kuisebmond Secondary School)” he says. According to him, a day before the pageant his friend came to him heartbroken and told him the lady that was supposed to design a dress for her let her down and she did not know what to do. Nepolo advised his friend to do the dress herself or to look for someone else to design her dress for her. His friend however explained to him that she had no idea how to sew a dress, although she had been in the modelling world for two years and that she also had no money to pay anyone to do it for her. “She asked me to design and sew her dress for her and gave me the material.

I refused at first, but eventually gave in and I spent my whole day until midnight on her dress. The dress turned out better than what I had expected” he says, and adds that at that stage he had no idea of how to use a measuring tape and would just take the material and measure it on the figure of her body. His friend modelled the dress and won Miss Personality at Miss Kuisebmond and later at Miss Valentine. That made Nepolo very happy. This talented and outspoken young man has already designed quite a few dresses for women and says the fact that these women look stunning in his designs is a huge motivator. He however admits that the one who inspired him to get into designing was the friend who first approached him and begged him to save the day. But on a question if he’s planning on studying fashion de-

sign, Nepolo's answer surprises - he wants to study medicine and surgery because he not only wants to help those in his family suffering from Tuberculosis, but that he also wants to be part and parcel of those finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. “I want to set an example for my children one day - and I really love working with sick people but, I am not giving up on fashion as I am planning on doing it part-time” he further explains. He says he would love to have a sewing machine of his own, since he is using someone else’s machine to sew and has to share his profit by 50%. Nepolo concludes by advising the youth out there to not feel ashamed of their talent based on the belief that men are supposed to do certain things and women certain things. We are all equal he adds, just believe in yourself and everything will be possible.

Ferrari 488 GTB: extreme power for extreme driving thrills

Forty years on from the unveiling of its first ever mid-rear-engined V8 model, the 308 GTB, the Prancing Horse opens a new chapter in its 8-cylinder history. The Ferrari 488 GTB provides track-level performance that can be enjoyed to the full even by non-professional drivers in everyday use. Its response times, nimbleness and on-the-limit driving

guarantee a unique sense of exhilaration and unparalleled driving pleasure. The new berlinetta brilliantly encapsulates Ferrari's experience in both F1 and the WEC, where the 458 GT holds

the World Championship title and has won its category in the last two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The new model also exploits to the full the know-how gleaned by Ferrari technicians over the last

decade through the XX programme which makes extreme trackonly cars available to gentleman test-drivers. The data yielded has made a significant contribution to the refinement of the electronic and vehicle control systems so that drivers can make the most of the incredible performance of this new car. The Ferrari 488 GTB's new 3902 cc V8 turbo is at the top of its class for power output, torque and response times, making it the new benchmark for this kind of architecture. The engine unleashes 670 cv at 8 000 rpm along with 760 Nm of maximum torque in seventh gear and a response time to the accelerator of just 0.8 seconds at 2 000 rpm. These figures are sufficient to allow the Ferrari 488 GTB to accelerate from 0-200 km/h in an astonishing 8.3 seconds and, when combined with the radical innovations introduced on all aspects of the car's performance, lap the Fiorano track in just 1'23".

The gearbox features Va r i a b l e T o r q u e Management which unleashes the engine's massive torque smoothly and powerfully right across the rev range, while specific gear ratios deliver incredibly progressive acceleration when the driver floors the throttle. As is always the case, Ferrari's engineers have dedicated great attention to perfecting the 488 GTB's sound, creating a new soundtrack that is full, clear and totally distinctive, as expected from any Prancing Horse engine. The car's aerodynamics also made a pivotal contribution to performance: its 1.67 efficiency figure is a new record for a production Ferrari, and is the fruit of 50 percent more downforce than the previous model and reduced drag. The greatest challenge was achieving these two goals simultaneously. Several innovative elements were specifically developed to do so, not least a double front spoiler, base bleed side intakes and, at the rear, active aerodynamics

coupled with a blown s p o i l e r. T h e a e r o dynamic underbody, which incorporates vortex generators, is highly sophisticated, too. The Ferrari 488 GTB's subsystems and electronic controls make its power and performance instantly available and controllable. It is, in fact, the most responsive production model there is, with razor-sharp response times comparable to those of a track car. The evolved version of Ferrari's side slip angle control system (Side Slip Control 2 - SSC2) is more precise and less invasive, providing greater longitudinal acceleration out of corners. Aside from integrating with car's F1-Trac and E-Diff, the SSC2 now also controls the active dampers which renders the car's dynamic behaviour during complex manoeuvres even flatter and more stable. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the new car features very sculptural flanks which are the key to its character. Its large signature air

intake scallop is a nod to the original 308 GTB and is divided into two sections by a splitter. The wide front spoiler features a double profile to improve the thermal efficiency of the radiators positioned at the sides. At the centre two pylons are combined with a deflector which channels air towards the flat underbody. The broad, low tail is also dominated by aerodynamic solutions, including an innovative blown spoiler which generates downforce without increasing drag. This works in conjunction with an aggressive ramp angle for the diffuser which features active flaps. The greater height required for the diffuser was achieved by repositioning the exhaust tailpipes. The circular LED tail lights have also been redesigned. In the cabin, the seamless integration of the new satellite control clusters, angled air vents and instrument panel heightens the sense that the cockpit is completely tailored around the driver. Usability was the key word in the design, leading to an extremely sporty ambience that in no way compromises on comfort. There are plenty of classic Ferrari styling elements too, such as the clear separation between the dashboard and tunnel, the multifunctional steering wheel, the control switch bridge and wraparound seats. The graphics and interface of the infotainment screen have also been completely redesigned while the design of the car's new key takes its inspiration from the car's cylinder banks and allows keyless starts. The Ferrari 488 GTB will make its world debut at the International Geneva Motor Show in March.

Solid First Month Performance For Toyota 路 Toyota dominates local sales 路 Hilux leads LCV sales and 2nd best seller overall 路 Domestic market shows resilience

Domestic market sales reached 52 306 units during the first month of 2015, with Toyota scooping 21% of these sales (11 191 units). Toyota is number 1 in sales for January overall.

Happy 95th Birthday Mazda! The "Zoom-Zoom" brand celebrates 95 years of driving fun The Japanese automaker was founded January 31, 1920, and over the years the company has carved a very unique path in the automotive world. As the only Japanese automaker to ever win at the gruelling 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, Mazda has proven itself on roads and racetracks. From the Wankel rotary engine to the SKYACTIV next generation technologies, the "Zoom-Zoom" brand has given the car world an incredible mix of fun-loving vehicles. Mazda originally built tools and, eventually, began producing three-wheeled motorized rickshaws. It would be roughly four decades before Mazda got into the business of building cars and trucks. When it did, the then upstart automaker did so with gusto and engineering bravado. In the 1960s, Mazda launched the exceedingly rare Wankel-powered Cosmo coupe, which had an incredibly compact Wankel motor that was a fraction of the size and weight of a normal piston-driven motor, yet it packed enormous punch despite its tiny dimensions. Improving on the collectible and exceedingly rare Wankel-powered Cosmo coupe, Mazda looked poised to usher in a totally new era in automotive propulsion introducing the brilliantly lithe RX-7 sports car with fantastically spry handling characteristics in 1978. By the 1990s, the RX-7 had turned into a curvaceous and turbocharged fire-breather, capable of running with the world's best speed machines. Mazda has always had a challenger spirit that defies convention and a history of taking what was considered impossible and

making it possible. This innovative characteristic saw Mazda redefine the automotive landscape. After all, it was Mazda that reinvigorated the roadster market, when it launched the first MX-5 back in 1989. For over 25 years now, the Mazda MX-5 has captured the hearts of auto enthusiasts like few other vehicles. Yet Mazda hasn't devoted all its energy into a few special sport-tuned models, remember the Mazda 323 - one South Africa's most loved and ever so popular model. Today, the SKYACTIV suites of engineering upgrades have a blueprint for better handling, improved fuel economy and higher performance and still deliver the same fun-todrive features found in preceding Mazda classics. "Mazda has always been committed to building stylish, insightful and spirited vehicles that are fun to drive and targeting those individuals who love the joy of motion and enjoy their lives through driving experiences. With the recently revamped lineup which includes the SKYAVTIV Mazda3, Mazda6, Mazda CX-5, the eminent all-new Mazda2, the all-new CX-3 and new generation MX-5 on the horizon; Mazda's future looks eclectic and bright. MSA is proud to be part of this growing brand as we celebrate 95 years of innovation." commented Mr David Hughes, MD Mazda Southern Africa.

Toyota as a brand achieved the top selling position in both total Passenger and Light Commercial Vehicle sales for January this year. From an export perspective, Toyota contributed 4 201 units (25%). Toyota's top performers include Hilux, which was also the overall top-selling vehicle in 2014 during January this stalwart sold 2 605 units; while its stable mate, Fortuner, recorded 721 units. Another solid performance from Quantum Ses'fikile (at 1 222 units), Corolla/ Quest combo (2 354 units) and the affordable entry-level Etios (1 820 units) rounds off the company's sales success. "The modest decline of 1.2% in overall domestic sales compared to January 2014 shows great resilience in a tough market marred by slower economic growth and exchange-rate-induced new vehicle price increases," says Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa, adding that

Toyota's industry forecast for 2015 is a modest 630 000 units. The reduction in the fuel price did, however, bring a positive outlook from consumers. This will probably keep inflation growth in check and bring stability to interest changes. The proposed new taxation on company vehicles could also swing employees from company cars into the car allowance option, resulting in higher sales. Companies preferring their employees to remain on the Company Car option, will have to purchase the vehicles before the tax

year end on 28 February 2015 to remain at the lower taxable rate. "The upward trend in particularly the SUV and passenger segments bodes well for the remainder of the year. Having said that, however, economic pressure remains and consumers are cautious about incurring additional debt," he says. Hamman points out that there has also been a move towards used vehicles which can be attributed to price increases on new vehicles and the availability of good quality used stock at an affordable price.

A VERSE A DAY: FRIDAY

Psalm 34:14 14 Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. SATURDAY Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight SUNDAY Ecclesiastes 7:9 9 Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools. MONDAY Psalm 3:2-6 2 Many are saying of me, "God will not deliver him." "Selah" 3 But you are a shield around me, O LORD; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head. 4 To the LORD I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill. "Selah" 5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me. 6 I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side. TUESDAY Romans 8:31 31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? WEDNESDAY Exodus 15:2 2 The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him

Prayer Lord, out of your desire to share your goodness, you have given me another breath and created another day. May I pause occasionally today and take a deep breath, reminded of the gift of life. May I thank You for all Your gifts. AMEN

Caro successfully defends Hollard Coastal Open Rossmund Golf Course played host over the weekend to the 9th Hollard Insurance Ladies Coastal Open. A field of 26 ladies from Omeya, Windhoek, Walvis Bay and Rossmund entered. This was an official event on the NALGU calendar and there was the additional incentive of Merit List Points also. The event was also the final opportunity to put your name in the hat for the Namibian Ladies Team that will be announced during the coming week, and will take part in the Southern Africa Challenge Trophy, scheduled to be played in Namibia from 19 – 23 April. Play commenced on Saturday morning around 8:00 – weather conditions were good, the course was well prepared and in excellent condition. Some good scores were posted. Caro Els shot an excellent 72 gross that included an Eagle on No.14 to take the overnight lead with 9 strokes. Sunday however was typical Swakop weather - cold, overcast, with bouts of rain but the smiles were still there and the morale was boosted by a bit of pampering on Number 7's tee box. Caro carried her

determination through to Sunday to secure the Championship by 19 shots over her nearest rival, Thea Groenewald. The tournament was rounded off with a fantastic prize-giving function. The President of NALGU, Thea Groenewald, used the occasion to honour a long standing player and ambassador – 85 year old, Nola Serfontein. A big word of thanks to Dif-fie, Berndine, Bertus and the rest of the Hollard Team. You definitely contribute in making this event a highlight on the Ladies Calendar and we look forward to the big one next year – the 10th Anniversary.
