Karibib Mining ACC-investigation nears end Marshallino Beukes
An Anti-Corruption Commission investigation, regarding Karibib Mining and Construction (KMC) allegedly colluding with government officials within the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) to obtain blasting certificates for six workers by fraudulent means, is on the verge of completion. The newspaper this week learned that the last witness’ statement was obtained and the dossier will be submitted to the Prosecutor General in about two weeks’ time. The case stems from an incident that was reported to the ACC in March 2012 and the dispute centres on six employees of the Karibib Mining and Construction (KMC) firm, who were enrolled with the Directorate of Mining to take the exam for a Blasting Certificate

for Open Cast Mines. Officials in the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) have also been implicated in the case, as it is strongly suspected that officials colluded in issuing fraudulent qualifications. One of the workers, who received an MME-approved blasting certificate on alleged fraudulent grounds, confirmed to this reporter that the certificates they acquired were issued illegally, because the candidates did not meet the
basic criterion. To get a blasting certificate, one must, in addition to passing the oral exam, first complete 120 shifts. However, it is alleged that the KMC candidates were called in and told to sign for a whole series of shifts on one day, in order to create the impression that they had met the legal requirements. Mine supervisors are by law required to have blasting certificates and the six KCM candidates were reportedly foremen and
pit controllers. It was further indicated by an inside source that when they were called into the office, they were asked to
sign the log book to indicate that they completed all the necessary shifts. He said that one of the new managers co-signed the
logbook to confirm that the candidates had completed the necessary shifts, even though that manager had only recently started at

The namib times last week reported about a Grade 10 pupil of Kuisebmond Secondary School, Lamour Isaacks, who was sent home from school, because of his dreadlocks. Lamour is raised under the Rastafarian Religion, and dreadlocks are mandatory to this religion. Lamour “Ras” senior, the pupil’s father informed the newspaper this week that he was notified by the Deputy Director of Education (Erongo) that his son may return to school on Wednesday. He further noted that

The founding CEO of the Namibian Standards Institution, Riundja Ali Kaakunga, says the NSI is anxiously looking forward to the day when the NSI is delegated as the competent authority to test and certify all fish and fishery products, including live bivalve molluscs.
Lamour and his dad this was only a temporary arrangement, as the matter will be discussed at a management meeting, next week, where after a final decision will be made. The aggrieved parent indicated that, “being a single parent,
it was hard to see the sadness in my child’s eyes the past week, but Wednesday morning all changed when he knew he was going back to school.” Lamour’s father still refuses to shave his son’s hair and stated that they Continue on page 2
At the moment the NSI is the Authority for all white fish. He says he foresees that the government will soon authorise the NSI to have the authority to cater for all those products, including live bivalve molluscs, that are traded and exported to other countries. He says the desire of the NSI is that any product coming from Namibia, and traded in Namibia or exported to other countries, will be NSI certified fit for human consumption. He says the NSI is ready to take the responsibility to ensure that all traded and exported products leaving
the country or entering the country are tested and safe for consumption. He says because of the incident late last year, when
Hong Kong rejected a batch of oysters because of too high cadmium levels, it was decided on an important meeting with
