Reini Matheis loses Battle with Cancer Susann Kinghorn Well-known general practitioner, Dr Reinward (Reini) Matheis, lost his battle with colon cancer on Tuesday, 4 August. The 62-year-old doctor, cherished by many people and patients due to his kind nature, died at noon in the MediCity Hospital in Windhoek, after having been confined to his hospital bed for nearly a month, the last days of which in the Intensive Care Unit. His sister, Doris Klimas, still spoke to him a day before his unexpected death and shortly before he fell into a coma. When the surgeon Dr Frederik Botha phoned his wife Marion, who herself was ill with influ-

enza, to inform her of the bad state of affairs, she immediately drove with her eldest daughter Anna and her brother from Germany from Swakopmund to Windhoek in the early hours of Tuesday. When she arrived at the hospital, Continues on page 2

Mixed feelings about Desert Rose

Pro-Ed Wen ATKV -Toneelfees in Windhoek

Confusion reigned supreme at Wednesday night’s meeting, because the majority of attendees had been under the impression that the meeting was about land and housing. The Erongo Governor, Bladsy 30 Cleophas Mutjavikua, had to intervene and explain A Swim - for Recycling the true purpose of the meeting. Mutjavikua made use of the opportunity to inform the public about the mass land cleaning campaign, which is due to kick off soon in Walvis Bay. A text message was Page 40

allegedly sent out earlier the day to the public, indicating that the meeting was about “a big project that is intended to create jobs for Walvis Bay and especially Kuisebmond.” Another text message supposedly misinformed residents that the meeting was indeed about the mass housing project. Residents have aired concerns that this project will destroy the natural beauty of the Namibian coastline and only the rich will benefit from it at the end of the day.

The question, why that specific area was selected for the development, was also raised. “This is a joke, this is ridiculous!” a concerned Walvis Bay resident fumed. Concerns regarding the availability of water, electricity, housing and also the bigger traffic load this development will enhance on the already jam-packed B2 highway between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, were also uttered. Another resident noted that the project, itself, was

not the problem, but the area where it is planned to be constructed. Developers were also accused of not being transparent regarding the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The main problem seems to be the area where this luxurious convention centre, which will include the development of a residential area, golf course, conference and shopping centre, and office blocks, among others, is planned to be developed. If the project gets the green Continues on page 2

Marshallino Beukes The highly controversial N$8 billion Desert Rose Project, planned to be constructed just south of Swakopmund, is in the spotlight again and at a heated public meeting in Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay, Page 26 on Wednesday evening, it was clear that not everybody is in favour of this gigantic development.

Dr Reinward Matheis loved nature with a passion. Here he is seen, blissfully happy, some three years ago in a boat on the Kavango River
