Low-cost flights soon a reality for the Coast “flyafrica.com is Back and Fares are Lower Than Ever”- Clifford Strydom

Maria Davel-Wallis It was an elated Clifford Strydom that shared his good news with namib times yesterday. “Fly Africa will be looking at launching their Walvis to JHB and Walvis to Cape Town with the completion of the main terminal building in Walvis. We have received clearance for the flights, so it’s just a matter of time,’’ says Strydom. flyafrica.com, Africa’s low fare airline, yesterday Page 13 launched its second airline Professional Develop- - Namibia flyafrica. “Flights from Johannesment Programme for burg and Windhoek will

Reini Matheis loses Battle with Cancer Susann Kinghorn Well-known general practitioner, Dr Reinward (Reini) Matheis, lost his battle with colon cancer on Tuesday, 4 August. The 62-year-old doctor, cherished by many people and patients due to his kind nature, died at noon in the MediCity Hospital in Windhoek, after having been confined to his hospital bed for nearly a month, the last days of which in the Intensive Care Unit. His sister, Doris Klimas, still spoke to him a day before his unexpected death and shortly before he fell into a coma. When the surgeon Dr Frederik Botha phoned his wife Marion, who herself was ill with influ-

enza, to inform her of the bad state of affairs, she immediately drove with her eldest daughter Anna and her brother from Germany from Swakopmund to Windhoek in the early hours of Tuesday. When she arrived at the hospital, Continues on page 2

Confusion reigned supreme at Wednesday night’s meeting, because the majority of attendees had been under the impression that the meeting was about land and housing. The Erongo Governor, Bladsy 30 Cleophas Mutjavikua, had to intervene and explain A Swim - for Recycling the true purpose of the meeting. Mutjavikua made use of the opportunity to inform the public about the mass land cleaning campaign, which is due to kick off soon in Walvis Bay. A text message was Page 40

allegedly sent out earlier the day to the public, indicating that the meeting was about “a big project that is intended to create jobs for Walvis Bay and especially Kuisebmond.” Another text message supposedly misinformed residents that the meeting was indeed about the mass housing project. Residents have aired concerns that this project will destroy the natural beauty of the Namibian coastline and only the rich will benefit from it at the end of the day.

The question, why that specific area was selected for the development, was also raised. “This is a joke, this is ridiculous!” a concerned Walvis Bay resident fumed. Concerns regarding the availability of water, electricity, housing and also the bigger traffic load this development will enhance on the already jam-packed B2 highway between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, were also uttered. Another resident noted that the project, itself, was

not the problem, but the area where it is planned to be constructed. Developers were also accused of not being transparent regarding the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The main problem seems to be the area where this luxurious convention centre, which will include the development of a residential area, golf course, conference and shopping centre, and office blocks, among others, is planned to be developed. Friends remember Elsa Day after her Death Straff reporter

Another well-known Walvis Bay resident, Mrs Elsa Day, who turned 80 this year, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning in Port Elizabeth. Mrs Day was well known in the medical fraternity. She first worked at Metal Box as their resident nursing sister, after which she joined the practice of Drs Coulson and Viljoen and finally retired from this practice last year. Her reason for retiring was to move to Port Elizabeth to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Elsa was an integral part of the Namib Park Bowling Club. She was Lady President for the first time in 1966. She won the Ladies Singles Championship in 1970 and she held the record of winning it 8 times during her bowling career. Her TAB will be forever “IN”. Elso also served the Lions Club of Walvis Bay, together

with her late husband, Archie. She was one of the oldest members of St Matthews Anglican church and she was involved in all spheres of the church, right up until she left Walvis Bay. Many Walvis Bay residents have fond and grateful memories of Elsa who sacrificially nursed their loved ones in the privacy of their own homes. Elsa was always available to help those who needed nursing care. She was caring and loving and always had a smile and light-hearted banter to share to brighten up ones day. Elsa leaves behind her three daughters, Margot, Joy and Cathy and their families. (Contributed by a close friend)

Desert Rose – The Thorn in Dorob National Park’s Side

Desert Rose ‘s International Convention Center - a sobering perspective. The Namibian reported on 6 August on p. 3 that “Government has close to N$1 billion for servicing land, finance minister Calle Schlettwein said yesterday.” Yet the proponents of the Desert Rose project expect the Government to fork out over N$ 1 BILLION to finance that International Convention Center as “the NICC will be owned by the Namibian government” (BID p. 16). Last night at the public meeting on the project in Kuisebmond the Governor of Erongo remarked that the Convention Center was needed. One of the reasons he mentioned was that if the Africa Union wanted to hold a summit it could be done at the Center! On the eve of the public meeting to be held on the Desert Rose (in Kuisebmond, but not in Swakopmund) an article was received from Michelle Pfaffenthaler of Swakopmund who is on our contact list and one of many concerned parties about this development. The text of it is reproduced below so that a wider audience may benefit from the views she expresses. “A group of greedy, unscrupulous developers are proposing to grab a stretch of coastline zoned as strictest conservation area (IUCN category 1), within the Dorob National Park, to develop a massive hotel, convention centre, golf course and upmarket residential area – Desert Rose. The concerning fact is that their proposal is being entertained. To propose this kind of development in this location is as preposterous as proposing to develop it in the garden of State House. Why you might ask? Because it does not belong there! The Dorob National Park is zoned for conservation and before any development of any sort can be entertained, the area would have to be rezoned. The Environmental Management Act requires an environmental impact astheir own lack of competitiveness. That airline now has real competition.” says Strydom. “Our revolutionary fares are available via our website, flyafrica. com, our Sales Offices, Call Centre and all Travel Agents. We at flyafrica.com will never apply a fuel surcharge as it is double charging by airlines to hide the true cost of travel. With flyafrica you can choose to pay for what you want - not be forced to pay for what you don’t want,” he explained. “We are also looking at flights between Eros and Ondangwa using the Fly Africa low cost model.”

sessment for any rezoning application. This is a fundamentally important issue because before the viability of a development such as Desert Rose can be considered, the public and the government need to consider whether it is in the best interest of the country to rezone an area from gazetted conservation to something else. Rezoning one of the strictest conservation areas in Namibia is not a simple paper exercise. It may require for that portion of land to be excised from the Park and for subsequent de-regulation of that portion from National Park to something else. This is no small undertaking and is something the Proponents of the proposed Desert Rose Development have totally overlooked. When Namibia’s President Hage Geingob disclosed his assets he sent a clear message about his commitment to transparency and accountability. In his state of the nation address he shone a torch on corruption and tasked Namibians with playing an active role in stamping our corruption. He also stressed that to build a nation we have to add on from what has already been built. Namibia’s constitution and laws form a strong foundation and we shall not be successful in addressing the needs of the poor, or meeting our development goals if we try and do so outside the ambit of the law. Namibia spent millions of dollars of both donor and government funding on the development of the Dorob National Park and it was undertaken with extensive public consultation. The management plan for the park and the zoning of areas was also undertaken with extensive input from scientists, people dependent on the park and the public. The result is that by the time the park was gazetted

in 2010, both the public and government strongly supported the establishment of the Park. In addition by creating the Park Namibia was able to boast a conservation area that stretched the full length of their coastline – a selling point that has been used extensively in the branding of Namibia as a tourist destination. The Desert Rose proposal, which grows more grandiose by the day, and is proposed to be funded by Government, has been met with substantial opposition from coastal residents, conservationists, scientists and employees from various ministries and government agencies. It also has vociferous support from the Governor of the Erongo region and the previous Major of Swakopmund. Opposition has been trying to contend this development by questioning the extent of the consultation process in the EIA process, by raising valid questions pertaining the accuracy of the final scoping report and by highlighting a number of issues that have not been considered. And whilst our commitment to an EIA process that is transparent and accurate is valid, and our call for alternative sites and consideration of the no go option is sound, I feel we have overlooked the simple but compelling ruling that NO development is allowed here EVER -period!! It is a gazetted National Park with a management plan endorsed by the Minister. There is a sense that our coastal parks are being treated like parking grounds until “better” land use options arise. And currently it seems that short term developments that benefit a few are in favour, with the focus on high impact developments. However, the reality is that the vast open spaces of Namibia and its haunting, wild coast-

lines and spectacular dunes are what we have used to brand our country – and it has worked. In 2013 Nami-bia was chosen as the site for the Adventure Travel and Tourism Summit, with Swakopmund as the capital. According to the Namibia Tourism Board’s blog site, Namibia not only used the opportunity to show off its varied adventure assets but to highlight its exceptional conservation record and its global leadership in promoting conservation through smart tourism. Just how a development strategy that destroys national conservation areas and builds up a coastline that looks more like Dubai or Phuket fits in with our current branding strategy is baffling? With all of our coastal towns growing at a rapid rate, a proposal on the table to expand Swakopmund’s municipal boundaries extensively, and proposals in place to give private developers such as Desert Rose and Gecko Mining access to large swathes of the National Park, we as the public need to consider very carefully just exactly what we want our future coastline to look like and ultimately which option will benefit future generations more. More immediate and fundamentally more important, we need to understand if we are really living in a country that honours their constitution and laws. Because the manner in which this proposed development is being handled throws a spotlight on Namibia’s governance and legal system and the outcome will be indicative of how robust our democracy is and the extent to which white collar corruption and greed is able to usurp assets that belong to all of the people of Namibia.” Swakopmund Matters 28 (For Swakopmund Matters the environment of the Namibian coastline and its ocean matters)

“New Swakopmund Mayor inherited tricky situation” - Swakopmund Residents Association Marshallino Beukes In their latest letter, the Swakopmund Residents Association assures the newly elected Swakopmund mayor, Cllr Nehemia Salomon of their loyal support, but warns that he inherited a big problem, in the form of Erf 3486, officially valued at ±N$ 2 million, which the council supposedly wants to rezone and sell to the Swapo Party at a price of N$30 000. The letter notes that the Association “completely deplore the proposal of this unjust act of political favouritism and on behalf of the taxpayer we protest strongly against it.” The letter further touches on the selling of the former Municipal premises, Erf 989 in Post Street, which Messrs Teine Properties CC have presented the highest bid of N$17 million. “We anticipate that building operations will start soon and the present outer appearance of the building remains unchanged as it is one of the landmarks of Swakopmund with its historical architecture,” the letter reads. According to the letter, the Beach Stabilisation Fund has a surplus of N$656 500 after the closing off of several maintenance projects. The question is asked, why, instead of transferring the funds to the current financial year, it is not used to renovate the small jetty in the Mole basin before it collapses completely, as two out of eight pillars have done so already. The Swakopmund Residents Asso-

ciation furthermore urges especially the younger generation to come forward and support their organisation during the upcoming Regional and Local Authority elections. They also compliment the municipality on repairing the paved walkway, which runs along the seashore below Maritime Flats, noting that daily walkers will welcome the facelift “Another improvement is the new road from Café Anton to the Beach hotel which has been paved. The curio–sellers are now more exposed and will attract more visitors,” the letter concludes. The newspaper sent an email to the Swakopmund Mayor's office on Wednesday in order to get comment from him, regarding the Swakopmund Residents Association's concern about Erf 3486 and also their expression of hope that the old Municipal building's outer appearance woulkd remain unchanged. Fisheries Inspectors Commissioned as Peace officers Mavourlene !Gaës

The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernard Esau officially commissioned the Ministry’s Inspectors as Peace Officers at a local hotel in Walvis Bay yesterday. for my Fisheries Inspectors. This resulted in cases being withdrawn as well as the cancellation of fines and arrest warrants by the courts”. He explained that the matter was brought to his attention and culminated in a request from his office to his erstwhile counterpart in the Ministry of Justice, Mr Utoni Nujoma, to commission Fisheries Inspectors as Peace Officers in terms of the relevant provisions. “The request yielded positive results and I am now delighted to share with you

that Fisheries Inspectors from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources were commissioned per Government Gazette 5438, Government Notice 38 dated 1 April 2014 as Peace Officers in terms of Section 334 of the Criminal Procedure Act 1977”. Esau added that, as Minister he has also appointed the officials in terms of section 4 (1) of the Marine Resources Act of 2000 to exercise powers conferred upon such officers under section 5 of the same act as well as in terms of sections

23 and 30 of the Inland Fisheries Resources Act of 2003. “The commissioning of Fisheries Inspectors as Peace Officers was followed up by induction training sessions from experts of the Namibian Police during November 2014 and July 2015 respectively.” Esau further explained that the training entailed relevant provisions of the Criminal Procedure Act that had a direct bearing on Fisheries Inspector duties, firearm handling and the

Esau gave a brief historical background on what had given rise to the occasion, saying the Sea Fisheries Act 29 of 1992 that had since been repealed, empowered Fisheries Inspectors to become Peace Officers. But, the same Act had an oversight in that the Minister of Justice was the competent authority to commission the Inspectors as Peace officers. “As you can imagine, this omission had severe consequences pertaining to enforcement and compliance

Madelaine Laubscher Over a period of time, complaints have surfaced from members of the communtiy regarding their concern over the safety of scholars in Walvis Bay after school hours. The children are playing in the roads, allegedly without supervision.

Scholar from Walvis Bay Primary School playing in the street

A trusted source provided the newspaper with video footage of scholars from Flamingo Primary School showing children playing “hop-skip-and-jump” on the zebra stripes while waiting for their transport. The source’s concern is that a child might be run over as there is no supervision. “This happens on a daily basis. Children’s lives are at risk. It happens after school, so who will take responsibility for these children? It is the school that will be blamed if a child gets run over. I personally believe the school must educate their learners about traffic safety rules and regulations. Supervise the children. Set rules that they must stay inside the school yard until their transport arives,” she said. The school principal said she will not deny that this is happening, but that the school cannot be held accountable, as some of the children rely on taxis to fetch them that do not stick to the time arranged. “I understand the concern. The school ends at 13:10 after which a teacher oversees the scholar patrol, so that the learners can cross

yard after school because teachers were still at the school until 17:00. “The gates are open. The learners are advised to stay inside the school yard but they do not listen because the taxi drivers tell them to wait outside. That is the problem we have. If the parents can encourage the children to stay inside the school yard it will help. I want to invite the person who captured the video to come and speak to us. It is not only this school that has this problem. I see learners from other schools also waiting for transport. I believe it is important that the children buy into what the traffic department is doing, namely educating learners on road safety. Our parents have the freedom to come into the school yard to get the children,” she concluded. After the newspaper received the video footage, the reporter went to investigate the matter and to capture a photo. Upon this, a scholar from a different school (Walvis Bay Primary School) was seen playing in the street (kicking a ball) without any supervision. The newspaper con-

the street at the zebra stripes. The teacher is on duty at the scholar patrol for 15 minutes while most learners leave. The same procedure occurs during the morning. Everybody is involved in road safety. I believe readers (parents) must be empowered to take special care that their children are picked up on time because our population at this school is called the taxi community. These learners do not live in close proximity of the school and depend on taxis. The parents make arrangements with taxi drivers to collect the children at a certain time. That arrangement should be observed properly so we would not have learners hanging around waiting for their taxis. Children do not sit and wait. They start playing. This is a continuous problem that we have. If the parents can ensure that the taxi drivers stick to the arranged time, the risk of them playing in the street will be smaller,” she said. When asked if it were possibility that the learners could stay inside the school yard, she said they were allowed in the school

tacted the school principal for comment. “We have a rule that the children waiting for transport wait inside the school yard and if their transport does not arrive, they are supposed to notify reception so that transport can be arranged. They are not allowed to wait alone outside. I will definitely speak to the learners. We had an incident where one learner waited up to 17:30 for a taxi (at the back of the school). It is unacceptable. We’ll notify the parents as well to speak to their children about this,” she concluded. The newspaper spoke to the senior traffic officer at the Walvis Bay traffic department about the issue. “It is dangerous to leave these children unsupervised. It is possible that in such a case where a child runs after a ball in the street that he/she could be killed by a car. If a vehicle drives really fast and the children are in the street and they scatter, that driver will most probably hit a child. I believe the schools must definitely make an arrangement and set rules to prevent any accidents occurring,” he said.

May I add that the intervention from experts of the Namibian Police will be sought until all Fisheries Inspectors are properly in-

ducted.” He applauded the Inspector-General of the Namibian Police, Sebastian Ndeitunga and Nampol Erongo Region Commander, Commissioner Samuel //Hoëbeb for their continued support and assistance in providing experts to train the Fisheries Inspectors.

“I am told that this training is bearing tangible fruit as there is significant improvement on the understanding by our Fisheries Inspectors of the Criminal Procedure Act, Arms and Ammunition Act and their overall conduct as Peace Officers,” he concluded.

Foetus found at pump station Madelaine Laubscher A foetus was discovered by workers yesterday during a daily routine cleaning of the drain at the Kuisebmond pump station. They informed the police who removed the foetus from the scene. According to Nampol Deputy Commissioner Otillie Kashuupulwa, she could not elaborate on this case as she had not received the report in writing at the time and would inform the newspaper at a later stage about the details. According to a source whose workers discovered the foetus, it was found just

Area marked with red circle - where the foetus was lying just before the police removed it after 08:00 in the morning. “My workers clean the pump station’s drainage system every morning, by scraping dirt and paper from the drain. In the process of scraping out the dirt, they discovered the foetus. They gently placed the foetus next to the drain and notified me and the police immediately,” he said.

When the namib times arrived at the scene, the police were still in the process of gathering evidence. A few minutes later the foetus was removed from the scene. Someone at the scene who spoke to namib times alleged that it was not the first time that a foetus was found at that particular pump station.

Speeding takes its toll Madelaine Laubscher Another accident ocurred Wednesday morning near the Walvis Bay entrance, when a speeding taxi hit a water tanker. The Senior Traffic officer of the Walvis Bay Traffic Department, Mr Clifton Jacobs, said the taxi was approaching Walvis Bay at a high speed. “The driver of the water tanker was turning into his lane after collecting water. The taxi was still far away, therefore there was enough time for the water tanker to proceed. However, due to the taxi driver’s speed, the collision ocurred. The taxi swerved far off the road, crashing through a small fence and into the wall of a house. One of the taxi’s passengers were injured and taken to the hospital,” he said. The St Gabriels Ambulance Services spokesperson confirmed that a woman (the passenger) had been transported to the Walvis Bay State Hospital for further medical care. “She was bleeding from her neck, complained of pain in the pelvic area, her arm was injured and she had open wounds,” she said. The Chief Traffic Officer of the traffic department,

The taxi that allegedly caused the accident Mr Eben Platt, has warned the community about the harmful effects of speeding. “We always warn road users about speeding yet it remains a problem. Speed is what causes fatalities therefore it is a serious problem. The correct speed in town is 60 kilometres per hour. If you speed, your time to react is much less than

if you adhere to the speed limit. You cannot simply brake at such a high speed which has unfortunate results. Also, drivers must adhere to the correct following distance between them. Some drivers enter the Walvis Bay circle driving 120 kilometres per hour. No person thinking logically can drive like that,” he concluded.

Mining and Technical Expo 2015

NAMIB TIMES 5

Leandrea Louw

The South African company 'Mining and Technical Exhibitions' together with more than 66 companies from both Namibia and South Africa exhibited their products at a mining and technical expo at the Walvis Bay Civic Centre on Wednesday and Thursday.

“This is a technical expo focusing more on the industry, and bringing the supplier and the customer together”, Mr Andrew Macnamara, Operation Manager said. This expo was first held in 2011 in Swakopmund and again in 2012. This was the first year that it was hosted here in Walvis Bay. “We wanted to target the Ports and the fishing industry and we also extended the invitation to mining companies as well. We've had some good quality customers and very good comments about the expo,” he said.

Device to curb Shack Fires hits the Coast Mavourlene Gaes

Shack fires have become a regular problem at the coast, and have already caused intolerable levels of hardship. A device that will help people to avoid shack fires, the so-called Lumkani device, was intro-

duced to residents living in Tutaleni in Walvis Bay this week. Rikambura “Kaliep” Murangi, who introduced the device locally, gave a demonstration on the use of the device. A make-shift shack that was set alight was also part of the demonstration. The Fire Brigade was on standby. According to Murangi the Lumkani device is specifically designed for shacks and in the case of fire, makes a beeping sound that alerts the shack owner and the people of

surrounding shacks. “Once it starts beeping and you do not react, the other unit within a 60 metre radius will also start going off - that is the whole idea of this device”. He says the strength of the Lumkani device lies in the fact that the unit works in a network” It is about community and alerting people. But people should take note that the device is merely a warning system and does not put out fires.” He has assured the residents that even those who do not know about the device will certainly, want to go and investigate where the noise is coming from, once they've heard the sound.

He added that he is bringing the Lumkani device to residents living in shacks, because he wants to do something to change people's lives. “The next evolution in this design is to have it connected to the fire department and it will basically send GPS coordinates to where they should go and then they will just follow the coordinates. At a later stage, it will be also send a text message to the owner.” “The device was invented about three years ago, by a company in South Africa that is called the Socio Tech Institute Pty Ltd, that has won multiple awards for the design of the units.”

Obtaining Fishing

Permits

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

The Logistics Hub Forum is an initiative of the WBCG, with partners from the public and private sector, who amongst others include the Ministry of Works and Transport, as well as the National Planning Commission (NPC). The idea behind the Forum is to engage relevant stakeholders to have dialogue and share information about what is happening within the logistics/transport sector, including all the developments, in an ef-

fort to form the type of collaboration that will eventually lead towards the country’s vision of transforming into an International Logistics Hub. Namibia has a vision to transform into an International Logistics Hub for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region by 2025. To aid in these efforts, the WBCG, in collaboration with Namport last week hosted the 2nd Namibia Logistics Hub Forum in Walvis Bay under the theme

‘Gearing Namibia’s Maritime Sector: Port and Shipping’. Stakeholders from both the private and public sector attended the Forum, where Namport gave an overview of its operations while shedding light on what they are currently doing to ‘Gear the Port of Walvis Bay as a Gateway to SADC’. The company also gave an overview on the ‘Port automation and Port communication system’. Global carrier, Maersk Namibia discussed liner

shipping trends. “As an industry, it is critical that we not only plan properly, but also execute this vision together. The key stakeholders cannot operate in isolation, we need to align our efforts. This is the reason for the forums. They create a platform where all the role players in both the public and private sectors can share their plans, actions and discuss possible solutions going forward. Best practices will also be presented at

the forums, where industry players will get a glimpse into how other countries and companies have managed to move on to the next level. The purpose of the Logistics Hub Forum is for the industry to communicate with and support each other to ensure that Namibia develops into the envisioned Logistics Hub for the region,” Clive Smith, the Project Manager for the Logistics Hub said.

No rhino poaching reported since May: Tweya No incidents of rhinoceros and elephant poaching have been reported since May this year. Delivering a report on Tuesday on a recent Cabinet meeting, Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Tjekero Tweya thanked the cooperation between the law enforcement agencies and members of the public to curb the illegal hunting of wildlife. He said the Etosha National Park, Bwabwata National Park and Palmwag Tourism Concession Area's wildlife protection have been placed in the hands of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol), amongst numerous law enforcement agencies. Tweya said officials of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism will continue to work closely with NamPol in wildlife crime prevention and law enforcement. The minister congratulated community members, traditional leaders, regional councillors and parliamentarians in affected areas for their fight against illegal hunting and

Ban on trophy hunting could end conservancies: Shifeta The ban on trophy hunting and the shipping thereof will have dire consequences, not only for the Namibian e c o n o m y, b u t also for her renowned conservation efforts. The Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta at the inauguration of the Game Products Trust Fund (GPTF) in Windhoek, raised this concern after airlines enforced a ban on transporting such products following the killing of the protected and now famous lion, Cecil in Zimbabwe last month. Pressure is mounting for a ban on the import of hunting trophies to the European Union (EU) and the United States of America (USA). Namibia received the 2012 CIC Markhor Award for her outstanding conservation performance. More than 80 registered Namibian conservancies depend largely on trophy hunting. Tr o p h y h u n t i n g concessions provided the second highest source of income for conservancies, generating more than N$ 13,9 million in 2010, of which 80 percent was from concession fees and salaries, and 20 per cent from meat distribution. Reply to letter of Mr King Mandume Muatunga regarding Swakopmund Matters In his letter in the namib times of 31 July 2015 a previous mayor of Walvis Bay, Mr. King Mandume Muatunga, calls Swakopmund Matters “to order.” After listing his criticism he then called all his “progressive” friends to “guard against the enemies of the state and progress.” What type of irresponsibility is this? Who will call him to order? Perhaps no one because nobody is taking him serious any longer. On top of it all he requested the owners and editor of the newspaper “not to allow the publication of the articles” by SM. Fortunately this newspaper has more savvy than to bow to the dictates of outsiders. Again he would not blink to rip from the supreme

law of this land the fundamental freedoms of speech, expression and association, while guaranteeing freedom of the press. How “progressive” is this? And then to accuse SM of wanting to “be leaders in matters of environment.” What a ridiculous statement. He is so uninformed! Swakopmund Matters 6 August 2015 (For Swakopmund Matters the environment of the Namibian coastline and its ocean matters)

Personally this was my first experience, in Namibia, of this kind of event hype and the second place result which we achieved, out of 270 towns (which had been entered), was astounding. Not astounding in the sense that I don’t think Swakopmund was able to compete at this level, but astounded that within such a short period of time, we were able to create enough interest and commitment from our supporters to achieve such an amazing result. Oh and I do also hear all the pessimists out there sighing at me thinking; we’ll never win; how could you waste so much time, effort and money, when we knew the outcome already! Well my answer in that instance is, if I didn’t put in 100% effort and take a chance to make a difference then I don’t believe that I deserve the pleasure of living in this beautiful town, I now call home. A client of mine, who serves on the HAN committee, approached me about 10 days before the final voting for the Competition began, to ask me if I could assist in getting Namibians to vote. My skills as a graphic designer and photographer have provided his company and a few others on the HAN committee with great results in the past, and they all know how much I Love Swakopmund. The fact that they approached me to help out was a compliment and I was so excited to be given the opportunity to make a difference. There was no budget in place for such a promotion, and each of us on the team are already very committed to our “day jobs”, it was no easy task, but where you have energy, the will and the passion, then great things can happen. Each of us worked closely together on a Pro Bono basis and I think we can say that we all enjoyed the reward of the great response we achieved. To all the Namibians, South Africans and Tourists who voted for us we say THANK YOU. My personal contribution was to promote the “Dorp Van Die Jaar” Competition, through social media. The immediate feedback and response which is achieved through this kind of marketing, is unbelievable, and I used Facebook and WhatsApp as the main platform to drive the promotion. Once the social media was launched it is only a matter of days before the print media start asking for material, and so the network gets stronger and more powerful. The I LOVE SWAKOPMUND Facebook page had been a dream that my husband and I have wanted to fulfill for a long time and we launched this page as means to create a more powerful message about Swakopmund specifically. The page has grown incredibly by

reaching 8 000 LIKES in just 3 weeks, it doubled in LIKES just in the past 3 days. During the final voting week for the “Dorp Van Die Jaar” Competition, the I LOVE SWAKOPMUND Facebook page reached over 112 000 people, interestingly enough more then half of those who visit and like the page are “Windhoekers”, that was an insight I had not expected. The team also organized a Flashmob which brought traffic to a stand still in town and some of the tourist related businesses in town challenged each other to get as many votes as possible from their colleagues and staff. The town was in a frenzy of excitement. I would like to call upon all of us who live in this beautiful, quirky, unique African town, to keep up the spirit that surfaced during this Competition. We have a “gem” here, Swakopmund provides us all with a lifestyle which I believe is not readily available anywhere else in the world. Our community have come together in spirit and unity and from all walks of life, to vote that they believe that Swakopmund is the Best Town in Southern Africa. There is a new sense of excitement around and there is a buzz of activity in Swakopmund which seems to be growing each day, I call upon all of us here to stand together and show the rest of Africa and the world how special we are. Our municipality is embarking on a strategic plan for growth and development in Swakopmund, an ambitious project which I believe will only be successful if we all play our part. We are all committed to making enough money to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table for our families, I understand that, I too have been a single mother with three children to care for. But I ask you to imagine the outcome we can achieve if we all take a little time to work together to achieve something positive. Our duty is always to our family and self, and this should be reward enough, however I strongly believe there is no greater reward then knowing you have added value to your community just because you can. Thank You again to all those who did support the Swakopmund “Dorp van die Jaar” campaign, your time and effort is greatly appreciated. To those of you who didn’t or couldn’t, I hope that next time the opportunity presents itself you will be there to assist us in preserving “her” character by developing, growing and supporting our wonderful town, Swakopmund, together. Kind Regards Xenia Ivanoff-Erb

My vriend,

Tog vra jy dan: “Waarom Here?

Mooi rus my vriend Jou vrind Maroeti DD

Letter of complaint

On Sunday 02 August 2015 I visited Shop 4 in Kuisebmond at around 15:00. My good intention was to purchase at least N$500.00 worth of meat. It was quite busy at the meat department waiting for my turn to be assisted. I was subjected to rudely remarks from a very rude and unfriendly sales assistant at the butchery department. When a few other customers and I complained about her behavior she went to call the supervisor/manager. The supervisor/manager did not want to listen to our complaints and instead told us to go away and leave the shop and buy somewhere else.

I and many other customers feel that we were unfairly treated by said Supervisor/manager. He should have listened to our complaints instead of virtually chasing us from the store. I suggest that in future the management should speak in a friendly manner to customers, listen to their complaints and reprimand the employee later, in order to find an amicable solution to dissolve the situation. Thanking you. Disappointed customer

“I have it and I live with it positively” Victor Shares his HIV Status Liesl Losper

“When I young, I was strongly built, and the girls liked being around me. I misused this attention I received from the girls and just lived my life freely and had no conscience about my way of life and no care for the future. Suddenly I started to lose weight and that is when I went to the clinic to get my HIV Status. As I was sitting at the clinic, looking at the other people, it suddenly struck me, and I said to myself, 'The reason you have decided to get tested, is that you feel guilty, because you have lived your life dangerously.' After my test the nurse came to me with a sad look. My heartbeat was faster than normal and when she uttered the words 'You are HIV positive', I could only see her

mouth moving – I was deaf with shock. After minutes, I was back in reality. Words that people use about HIV, like 'If you have AIDS, you are just going to die, your life is over' was constantly flashing through my mind.” A blessing for Victor at that stage of his life was that he had changed his life; he was a born-again Christian by the time he got his test. “Being a Christian at that specific moment of my life, the only option for me was to go to my church leader for emotional assistance. My church leader played a huge role in my life in regarding accepting what was happening in my life.” Victor said with time he found inner peace and accepted the virus living inside his body. After his acceptance, he

started his own support group in Kuisebmond to help others in the same situation. “We support each other in this group emotionally. We also reach out to others, even if they do not have HIV/AIDS but are experiencing difficulties at some point in their lives with other situations. We help to prevent people from getting infected with HIV/AIDS because of their lifestyles.” Victor said his girlfriend then (now his wife, who is HIV negative), supports him tremendously and the love he receives from his kids (also HIV negative) gives him all the hope in the world. “My family does not treat me differently because I am HIV positive. are under the protection of the constitution.” What bothers Victor mostly, is the way an HIV infected person gets treated at some hospitals. “When a person with HIV/AIDS are admitted in hospital, and they are getting weaker, the nurses send them home to their families. Most of the time the family does not have the knowledge to take care of them. And the person’s condition just deteriorates and eventually he or she dies.” Victor encourages all who are infected with this virus. “Keep doing good, people will slander you with negative words, but put your faith in the Lord, all of us are only human. Get to know your status today to start living your life in truth and with responsibility,” he said.

If you have been exposed to the virus, you can take the HIV post prophylaxis within 32 hours of your exposure. This is known to reduce your risk so that you are zero converted to HIV. Victor Louw is a 47-year-old man who has been living with HIV/AIDS for the past 19 years and is still living positively. In his younger years he had a “gangster” kind of life he was always the strong guy in his group.

“I read a topic in one of news paper in Namibia about ‘Is this the blame game or what?’ I want

help from you as to what if my partner and I know that we are affected by the HIV virus, can we have a child? Please help!” - Simon. Bernhard: Yes, you can have a child. Every HIV positive person has the right to reproduction but the decision to have a child comes with a great responsibility. First of all, you must find out your viral-load as well as your CD4 count. If your CD4 count is high, you can have a risk-free, normal pregnancy, but if it’s low, you might not be strong enough to carry a child. Also, some type of ARV medication can reduce your chances of falling pregnant or even cause deformity to your unborn baby. Drugs like Efavirenz are not child-bearing friendly so it is important to find out from your doctor if the drugs you are taking can cause complications should you want to get pregnant. Upon deciding to fall pregnant, you have two options; you can either choose to conceive through direct intercourse with your partner, but this method also carries the risk of you and your partner re-infecting each other with the virus. Your second option would be through artificial insemination, which can cost you up to N$700 for consultation alone. I suggest you go with the first option since you may not have the required finances to choose the second option.

“Hi, I am married for two years with my lovely husband since i met him he is HIV positive and i really love him and now i want to make our babe his. Advise me, please.” Tjeripo. Bernhard: The good news is that sperms do not have the virus, meaning, it is possible for you to have a healthy child with an HIV positive partner, but not through normal intercourse. In your case, I would advise artificial insemination as your only option. It is costly but it is the only option you have if you want to have your partner’s baby without exposing yourself to the virus. “Is it possible that one can live for 12 years HIV positive, and give birth to two children aged 15 and 9 during that time, without getting sick and without any medication?” - Frans. Bernhard Kamatoto: Yes, it is possible. An HIV positive person can live up to 15 years like me, Bernhard Kamatoto, without any symptoms and can even go on to live a normal life during the asymptotic period and have children who are free of the virus. However, sometimes it depends on the genes of that person. Some people are more genetically stronger than others when it comes to contracting the virus and can live longer than the normal period and not show any symptoms at all.

77AUGUST AUGUST2015 2015 7 AUGUST 2015 N$100 000 for Erongo Education

Marshallino Beukes Swakop Uranium once again displayed their devotion towards their social responsibility, after they donated N$100 000 to the Erongo Directorate of Education, yesterday.

Messrs /Awaseb and McCallum signing the agreement with Governor Mutjavikua looking on

(Fltr) Mr Yang Gang (SU), Mr John /Awaseb, Governor Mutjavikua, Mr Percy McCallum (SU), Ms Natalia Guriras (Chief Education Officer) and Ms Beata Muteka (SU)

At the same occasion the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Swakop Uranium and the Erongo Directorate of Education also took place. Swakop Uranium’s Vice President Human Resources and Business Support, Mr Percy McCallum, noted that, although the Government annually allocates a significant portion of the national budget to education, it cannot meet the country’s enormous education needs on its own. This is why, according to McCallum, Swakop Uranium is keen to join forces with the Namibian government for the development of Namibia’s skills

pool, through the signing of the MoU with the Erongo Education Directorate. He remarked that the N$100 000 donation will be used to financially assist in various education needs throughout the region. He furthermore expressed his trust that the donation would benefit learners and teachers now and in the future. McCallum also noted that Swakop Uranium plans to support the Erongo Directorate of Education on an annual basis, and that assistance towards the region’s education will in future be granted directly through the Regional Director of Education, Mr John /Awaseb.

The Erongo Governor, Mr Cleophas Mutjavikua emphasised the importance of human capital development and applauded Swakop Uranium for generously contributing towards the enhancement of primary and secondary education. Mutjavikua noted that the Erongo Region is developing rapidly and skills development is thus vital, especially for the mining sector, as they heavily rely on skilled workers. “To have high calibre technical graduates, the country needs a sound primary and secondary education system,” the Governor noted. He pledged his support towards the company’s initiatives, aimed at uplifting the

communities in the region. A clearly delighted Mr John /Awaseb, the Regional Director of Education, noted that mathematics and science were identified as the two subjects which needed support, as the education sector experiences a challenge regarding a shortage of qualified teachers in this field. According to him, their biggest challenge remains the shortage of classrooms, especially in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, and he urged Swakop Uranium to also try and assist in this regard. Awaseb conveyed the hope that the signing of this agreement will be to the future benefit of Erongo education.

Swakop Uranium appoints 1 000th employee Swakop Uranium on Monday recruited its 1000th employee for the Husab Mine operations.

Done deal

Benjamin Abed, a Fitter and Turner graduate from the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) is number 1 000 on the list of employees recruited by the company. Abed who hails from the Omusati region says it has been a lifelong dream to work in

the mining industry. “While at NIMT, I became familiar with various mines in the Erongo region, and many of us could only hope for a job at Swakop Uranium. Today, I am one of the fortunate few to have gotten employment at the company,” he said.

Abed is happy to work for Swakop Uranium. While this is his first employer, he is eager to make a meaningful contribution at the company and to grow and enhance his skills in his chosen field. The latest recruitments brings Swakop Uranium’s workforce to 1 008, with a further 260 positions to be filled by the end of the year. The recruitment of staff for Husab Mine has gone well to date, and this effort should

Benjamin Abed be seen as Swakop Uranium’s contribution to the call by Government to reduce the levels of unemployment in the country, says a press statement released by Swakop Uranium, on Tuesday.

ENTERTAINMENT

What a Perfect Evening! WALVIS BAY

On Saturday evening the Musikfreunde Zornheim gave a fabulous concert at the NPS Kulturaula. A great mix of German “schlager2 and international evergreens had many in the audience rock their feet and sway their heads and shoulders with the rhythm, be it an Udo Jürgens medley, Y.M.C.A. or “Always look at the bright side of life” – everyone was swinging in the mood. The lay musicians played like pros and the joy and fun of making music became evident again and again, be it with the swaying of the trombones, the trill of the piccolo flute or the clarinets that, thanks to the expertise of conductor Sascha Kordel, were not “covered” by the brass. After the last piece the audience jumped off their seats and the band was not allowed to leave without three encores. Closing with a special highlight of “Amazing Grace” with

amazing trumpet soli, the audience was reluctant to go home. Apart from delivering a great concert, the Musikfreunde Zornheim also dedicated the proceeds of the evening in its entirety to the 50th jubilee of the Swakopmunder Musikwoche – and they additionally brought many presents! Thanking the organiser Christiane Berker she was handed an original size facsimile page from the Gutenberg bible, printed

in letterpress technique in the Gutenberg-Museum in Mainz (near Zornheim), with the ornamentation added by hand. The biggest surprise though were two instrument donations, a flute and a clarinet, that were handed over to the Musikwoche to be passed on to young musicians who could not afford such an instrument! Sunday saw another concert together with the Swakopmund Youth Choir and the Mascato Choir in the Immanueal Church in

Mondesa. The musicians were so overwhelmed with the beautiful song of the choirs that they spontaneously invited the Mascato Choir to their May Festival, seeing that the Mascatos will be on their European tour during that time next year. Again, the Big Band from Germany was welcomed by an enthusiastic audience, and the Amazing Grace, joined in song by everyone, got a whole new quality for all present. The pastor of the Imma-

nuel church, pastor //Keib, warmly thanked the musicians and welcomed this kind of cultural exchange. The Swakopmunder Musikwoche hopes to inspire even more young (and older) musicians, not only from Mondesa, to join the Musikwoche in December to improve their musical talent and knowledge with expert lecturers. “Embracer” Ndasuunje “Papa” Shikongeni’s “Social Cohesion” Impresses Maria Davel-Wallis

Under the light of the Blue Moon, in the hue of the ‘holy fire called Oshinyanga in Oshiwambo’ the visitors to “Papa” Shikongeni’s latest exhibition at the Cosdef Arts and Crafts Centre in Swakopmund, absorbed the message he wanted to portray – that people should connect themselves to their ancestors and to nature. and craft in community development and today lectures at the College of the Arts. In this exhibition Papa comments on Namibian independence and the notion that it is built upon the spirit of national reconciliation and social cohesion, healing. This exhibition speaks of a socially cohesive society, namely a society that does not minimise the reality of diversity and complexity but that displays high degrees of collectivity, interconnectivity, interdependence, acceptance, inclusivity, equity, justice, fairness, mutuality and integration. It is important to note that social cohesion asks us, as Namibians, to engender a national culture that reduces within the Namibian community of citizens. This exhibition came into excistence with the full and effective participation of the community’s daily life, and citizens as active participants, to express the living conditions for all within the arts and culture. The goal is not to recreate or return to a past version of social relationships, which likely contributed directly or indirectly to the rise of many of the challenges that faced our society. “ Well-known international artist and veteran in photography, Tony

Jessica le Grange-Keyser told guests that working with Papa had been a pleasure. “Papa is an internationally and nationally recognised artist, storyteller, spiritual believer and leader in Namibia’s post-independence arts education and culture. He fought for his country’s independence from the late 1980’s to early 1990’s, but now uses art as a means of raising consciousness and liberating people’s minds. Papa’s skills in the visual arts are extensive. He has sculpted extensively in wood and papier-mâché, established innovative techniques in printmaking, using cardboard and painting ink on paper and linoleum, and also created a new technique using stretched zips on a frame.” She says Papa uses art to promote freedom of self-expression and individual spirituality, highlighting the importance of tradition and culture in sustainable and appropriate economic and social development. “He is committed to helping up-and-coming artists overcome the challenges involved in marketing themselves and their art internationally. As part of his mission, Papa teaches youth the importance of art

Artist Papa Shikongeni and Sustainability II

Figueira, opened the exhibition that will be open until 22 August. In his opening speech he said Papa had huge concerns about the future of the country and how we can heal it, by being more caring, more h uman. “To heal the nation we need to heal the minds, to make all of Namibia’s people respect each other – according to Papa all human beings are inherently good, but the good in humanity is sometimes distracted when fundamental dignity becomes challenged.” Sustainability II He referred to something that had happened that of the words the young noticed and rememmorning on the beach man remembered – bered by people.” while he and Papa were Papa made his day, and When namib times I watched and smiled, asked Papa to pose for flying a quadcopter. “A man who was work- seeing his magic work- a photo at the painting ing in one of the homes ing – Papa, a wise man, nearest to his heart, he nearby, came up to us, wanting to know how this flying camera works. So I watched Papa and the young man exchange thoughts, when suddenly our friend recognised Papa. Shikongeni, he said, you are Shikongeni. Hishishi Papa… and he went into song, remembering Nombili nombili (peace peace), a song that Papa recorded last year, that became very popular. ‘You have to respect human beings and our mothers, don’t rape them’, were some Papa Shikongeni and Tony Figueira

chose his work “Sustainability”. “Our grandchildren’s future must be based on health, peace and free spirit….we need to path a sustainable life for them, no matter what our skin colour, but sustainable life based on dignity and value of being.

Respect the Beauty of nature, your fellow beings, one people, one future… Namibia, do what we know is right, and be truthful and honest. We are the people of this beautiful Land of the Almighty. Take responsibility for tomorrow… There is nothing useless on this planet. ”

Ich as-

soziiere Zigeuner also durchaus mit etwas Positivem. Schwarzafrika ist ebenfalls ,,out”.

To address the need for training teachers in the new approaches, the Erongo Regional Education Directorate has partnered with Walvis Bay Salt Refiners to provide teachers with the knowledge and skills to develop number sense and numeracy skills of Grade 1 – 3 learners. The Junior Primary Mathematics Professional Development Programme, which is facilitated by Magret Courtney-Clarke, has been rolled out this year to one group of 30 Walvis Bay teachers of the Tutaleni cluster in Walvis Bay and one group of 20 teachers in the Usakos cluster. Training takes place in two-day workshops over 5 months. The training course for the 30 junior primary teachers in Walvis Bay was concluded with a function on 30 July 2015. At this function Mr John Awaseb, the Erongo Regional Education Director, encouraged the teachers to use the learner-centered approach and practical activities of the training course to equip learners with the very important basic number skills and understanding. He thanked Walvis Bay Salt Refiners for their interest in and commitment to education through supplementing the funds that can be made available for teacher in-service training by his Directorate. Mr Gregory Swart, the representative of Walvis Bay Salt Refiners, relayed his company's message of support to the aspiration and the vision of the Ministry of Education to develop a high performing education system and expressed his hope that the training of junior primary teachers will bear fruit so that all children can develop a strong foundation for mathematics.

A Professional Development Programme for Teachers Junior Primary Mathematics The first years of schooling have a profound impact on future academic performance and one of the root causes for the small number of learners who are able and willing to take mathematics at more advanced levels in secondary schools is the poor foundation laid in primary school. The Ministry of Education has launched a wideranging curriculum reform and syllabus review. Implementation has started at the Junior

Primary phase in 2015. The emphasis in mathematics is on improving basic numeracy of junior primary learners. The new approaches to teaching

mathematics at junior primary level in Namibia are based on the programmes developed in the Netherlands. This professional deve-

lopment programme aligns with these new approaches to teaching and learning mathematics at junior primary level. Its aim is to provide teachers with the know-ledge and skills to develop number sense and numeracy skills of Grade 1 – 3 learners. A successful pilot programme was conducted in 2012 at schools in the Omaruru circuit. Due to generous financial support from Walvis Bay Salt Refiners and input from the Erongo Regional Education Directorate the programme has been rolled out this year to one group of 30 Walvis Bay teachers of the Tutaleni cluster and one group of 20 teachers in the Usakos cluster. The programme is conducted by Magret Courtney-Clarke over a five

months period as a series of 2-day workshops. Teachers are introduced to some theoretical background, affordable materials, models, teaching approaches, and sequences. The facilitator models all teaching approaches and teachers are involved in practical activities with materials and worksheets. Teachers are tasked to apply what they have learnt in the classroom after each workshop. The focus of the programme is on understanding basic mathematical principles involving numbers and operations, on developing strategies to derive facts and solve problems and on developing quick and correct recall of basic facts (e.g. addition and subtraction facts and multiplication tables). The programme at Tutaleni cluster has been completed successfully and will be rounded off with a lunch hosted by the Erongo Regional Directorate on 30 July 2015.

dynamics exhibit the key characteristics we have come to expect of all our new Germans," said Christopher Cradock, Opel Brand Manager. New State of the Art Drivetrain The Corsa 1.4T Sport is equipped with the latest engine from Opel's ecoTEC family of small petrol engines. Combining both performance and efficiency, the engine propels the Corsa from a standing start to 0100 km/h in 9.6 seconds, with a top speed of 204 km/h. The 1.4T Sport's tested fuel consumption is consumption 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres (urban cycle); 5.1 litres (extra urban) and 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle. Some of the engine's notable features include 16 valve cylinder head with natrium cooled exhaust valves which allow for increased airflow, optimized inlet port,

reduced component temperatures thereby increasing performance. Another key feature of this engine is Double CamPhaser (D CVCP) for increased airflow and optimized valve timing. This feature allows for reduced fuel consumption and increased performance. Furthermore as is the trend with Opel for downsizing engines, turbocharging is used to create low end torque enabling longer ratios to reduce fuel consumption and increase driver enjoyment. Fuel consumption is further reduced by optimizing oil pressure, reducing friction and controlling engine heat up and cooling. The Corsa Sport comes with a six speed manual transmission with synchronised gears, including reverse, with short shift travel. The gearbox has a cable shift system for improved shiftability, sync re-

FORMANCE To further optimize the ride and handling performance of the Corsa, the front suspension geometry has been optimized via changes on the front knuckle to improve vehicle roll behaviour, steering response and understeer behaviour. The vehicle has a lower centre of gravity, and front spring rates adapted to axle loads to improve vehicle ride and pitch behaviour. The changes are engineered to offer a significant improvement in ride, more stable and safe handling, better steering feel and precision as well as an improved NVH-behaviour. To further improve refinement, the new Corsa has a Neutral Torque Axis (NTA) engine mounting system with two load carrying mounts to the body and one torque mount attached to the sub frame. This system contributes to the driving comfort,

improves the NVH behaviour. S P O RT Y L O O K AND REVOLUTIONARY INTERIOR DESIGN The 2015 Corsa Sport comes with subtle OPC_Line Kit addons for customers who want to show their sporty ambitions. Ranger Odyssey Conquers 2 000km of Namibia's Best Twenty contestants and a convoy of 17 Ford Rangers have completed an arduous 12-day 2 000km off-road expedition through the extremely remote and rugged Damaraland and Kaokoland regions of northern Namibia during Ranger Odyssey 2015 which ended in Windhoek today. There were many highlights during the trip, including travelling through Desolation Valley, the infamous Khuwarib, dust holes, Crowther 4x4 Trail and camping at the base of Brandberg - each just as spectacular as the last. The convoy also traversed many of Namibia's main rivers including the Huab, Omaruru, Hoanib and Hoarisib River. The route officially started at Spitzkoppe, and contestants travelled via Palmwag, Khuwarib and Desolation Valley to the final destination point at Brandberg campsite where the final two days were spent beneath the highest mountain in Namibia. The terrain varied dramatically during the course of the trip, from smooth dirt roads to soft river sand, suspension-testing rough and rocky 4x4 trails through the mountains leading into barren planes that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Each day the contestants were assessed and scored by the instructors, Ford representatives and media crew on a wide variety of aspects, including 4x4 driving, camp etiquette, communication and leadership skills, special tasks, as well as their overall demeanour throughout the trip. The competition also featured two elimination phases. The two lowest scoring contestants were eliminated on the 27th and a further three departed on the 30th. Contestants' votes also counted for a portion of the scores in each round, plus were factored into the final results. "The final 15 contestants have come through 12 challenging days in some of the most remote and unforgiving conditions of northern Namibia," says Tracey Delate, General Marketing Manager, Ford Motor Company of Sub-Saharan Africa. "Each one of the contestants has given it their all and we have been really impressed with

the enthusiasm, energy and spirit that each person brought to Ranger Odyssey 2015." "Ultimately there will be only one winner but everyone heads home today as a winner in their own right, having experienced a true lifechanging adventure through some of the best parts of Namibia," Delate commented. The Ford Ranger has been the real star of the show having conquered some of the most arduous and challenging conditions in Africa. The performance of the Ranger has been truly exceptional throughout, taming even some of the toughest obstacles. Overall, the Ranger proved that it is indeed built for tough. During the trip contestants proposed their own corporate social responsibility initiatives. The winner of the humanitarian project was Jacobus Muller, who won the contestants' combined pot of "Ranger Odyssey Dollars" to get his proposal off the ground for a selfsustaining crèche

powered and watered by a windmill system - after all, changing lives is what Ranger Odyssey is all about. "My sincere thanks and gratitude to the entire Ranger Odyssey team, including all the De Rust Outdoor instructors, as well as the great sponsors who contributed towards the success of this year's event." Delate said Satellite communications equipment was sponsored by SatForRent with Inmarsat providing the satellite data. Drimac kitted out all of the contestants and crew with a superb range of clothing and accessories and each person also received a pair of Oakley sunglasses. Navworld supplied Garmin Montana 600 GPS units for each vehicle, along with a Garmin verb camera to capture the action. Energizer kindly supplied LED headlamps and Cansa supported the event with sunscreen and buffs to help shield the sun. Contestants were able to stay in touch and keep their phones charged

thanks to I Do Powerbanks. The winner of Ranger Odyssey 2015 will be

You gave no one a last farewell, Nor ever said good-bye. You were gone before I knew it, and only God knows why. A million times I will miss you. A million times I will cry. GONE ARE THE FACE WE LOVED SO DEAR SILENT THE VOICE WE LOVE TO HEAR. Willy, Heather & Kids Never thought it could be you, we never wanted it to. Darkness came as fast as you got your angel wings. Our tears will never go away. Our hearts feel like its been thrown away. When we heard the news, we fell to our knees. Not wanting to get up, We heard you say it’ll be okay. Memories running through our heads not believing our only big brother was gone. We stood there looking at you, wanting to shake you. We couldn’t see those big brown eyes, there’s not a smile that could ever be replaced. God, take away this pain from us. We never got to say goodbye, We want you to answer why. We were too late to take his place, but all we can do is wait. Till then we will be missing him. We love you Slow.

LOVE YOUR SISTER LYNDOLL AND BROTHER DYLAN

A Better Place

He’s in a better place right now than he’s ever been before; All pain is gone; he’s now at rest; Nothing troubles him anymore. It’s we who feel the burden of our sadness and our grief; We have to cry, to mourn our loss, before we get relief. We know we’ll reconnect with him at the end of each life’s road; We’ll see his cherished face again, when we release our earhly load.

Memories

My memories are what I have left, and a lesson I will not forget. The time has come when time is no more and all that’s left was once before. The memories so dear and true, those memories of me and you. Although we fell and stumbled at times, all those hills were necessary climbs. All the times when your heart shined through, Are the greatest memories I have of you. I will always remember you, brother of mine in my heart I will keep you, so I will be fine. I will go forward with my head up high, it might be hard, I cannot lie. But in my heart you will be moving forward, you’re always with me.

A swim - for recycling Leandrea Louw

Three women, Bobby Jo, Sandy Le Roux and Ulla Gossow Buttner will brave the English Channel, as a way to raise awareness for a ‘keep the beach’ clean campaign. Part of the campaign was the placing of 6m3 skips on Tuesday along the beach between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. “I started a recycling campaign 17 years ago – with Café Bojos being the first coffee shop to recycle all

The three swimmers

material used in the shop,” said Ms Kelly Hicks, the initiator of the campaign. “The idea came about

some time ago when we were walking along the beach and saw all the overflowing bins and decided to

do something about it. I had the privilege to travel all over the world, and when I came to Namibia, and Swakopmund, I instantly fell in love. We have this precious gem of the desert and the ocean and we need to protect it. It needs to be preserved. The whole idea of doing the swim came from the fact that we are living along the ocean, so we want to do something in the sea to raise awareness. If we were to live in Windhoek we would’ve done a marathon.” The Ministry of Environment and Tourism is also very ‘happy

and excited’, about the commencement of this campaign and stated, “We would like to urge the public to make use of our very colorful skips along the beach.” Bobby, Sandy and Ulla will be the first three women to swim the English Channel, which separates southern England from northern France, and joins the southern part of the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. They will also be the first three Namibian women to swim the 34 kilometer stretch. The swim will be done as a relay with each woman swimming

for about an hour and the whole exercise will last about two nights and a day. They will leave on 19 August and will be back on 6 September. “The challenges we will be facing is that we will be stuck on a small boat for about 30 hours and for two nights we won’t be able to sleep. We also face the possibility of sea sickness,” Bobby Jo said. In addition, Bobby Jo is no stranger to the English Channel, which she swam before, being the first Namibian lady to swim the Channel. She made history when she was only 27

years in 1999. Join in the campaign - The placement of the skips is just the start of the clean up campaign. There are numerous exciting projects lined up, with the coastal schools being actively involved as well. If you want to be part of this campaign to keep it afloat, donations can be made to Strokes for Earth, Bank Windhoek, Account number: 8004417337, Branch Code: 485-873 (Omaruru).
