Speed up the Page 2 numbering of taxis The Dance Factory in Walvis Bay

The municipality of Walvis Bay is currently making inquiries to ascertain whether the necessary safety measures were in place when the roof of this building in 10th Road was taken down this week. The contractor will be questioned whether safety guidelines were in place handling asbestos. That includes proper personal protective equipment (PPE), the proper sealing-off of the premises so that no asbestos dust is blown around and the mandatory disposal of the asbestos sheets at the Walvis Bay municipality’s hazardous waste disposal installation. Property owners in Walvis Bay and contractors are once more reminded to first consult the Municipality’s hazardous waste department before taking down roofs of older buildings, as asbestos is a highly dangerous substance that can cause deadly lung diseases to those exposed to asbestos fibre.

A municipal employee and the employee of a contractor was killed in an accident at the Walvis Bay municipal sewerage work shortly after mid-day yesterday. It is believed they were overcome by sewer gas whilst working in a pump station sump. It is believed their exposure to the sewer gas (which is odourless) caused the men to fall unconscious and they then fell into the water and drowned. On the picture: people at the scene of the accident yesterday. At least one co-worker of the deceased had to receive treatment for shock after the incident. The incident, which occurred at the Walvis Bay municipal water works, is now under investigation. · A similar incident in 1998 lead to the death of a municipal employee at the same water works.

Several neighbourhood watch formations in Walvis Bay called upon the municipal traffic authority to speed up the process for the number of taxis. These groups made this call as many taxi drivers actively assist criminals serving as getaway vehicles and transporting goods stolen during burglaries, smash and grabs and robberies. “The municipality’s traffic department is scheduled for a meeting in the near future with the transport ministry which is currently in the process of designing a new national system of taxi registry. The new system will entail the expiry of all current taxi licenses, re-registration and then for these licenses to be renewable every two years. “Up to that stage where the national system is not finalised we cannot commence with taxi registration and the numbering of the taxis”, a senior traffic official said yesterday. Adding the equipment is in place it is now up to the transport ministry to finalise the process. A second spokesperson also called upon the traffic authority to clamp down on the many vehicles that either has no number plates or only one number plate. “We know that criminals are now using vehicles with either false registration plates or no plates at all. Let us be proactive”.

License renewed Namibia's four most important airports, received their renewed operating licenses from the Namibia Airports Company (NAC). That includes the Walvis Bay International Airport. The other three are Hosea Kutako, Eros Airport and ya Toivo Airport. The licences are valid for a 12 months period.
