Global support against poaching Sharlien Tjambari

A crowd of coastal residents gathered at the Sam Cohen Library in Swakopmund on Saturday to protest against elephant and rhino poaching. The rising tide of elephant and rhino poaching in Africa is rapidly spreading to the sparsely-populated vastness of Namibia. While no rhino was poached between 2005 and 2010, a total of 11 have been killed since; rising from one rhino killed in 2011 to four already this year. Presently two rhinos

a day and an elephant every 15 minutes are lost in Africa. The march in Swakopmund took place simultaneously with marches in over 40 countries and 121 cities in the world as part of the World Animal Day. The march, which was the first World Wide March aimed at stopping the extinction of these spe-

cies, aimed to highlight the severe poaching crisis in southern Africa. Residents started marching from the Sam Cohen Library, worked their way through the city centre and back to the library. It was a very exciting day, which drew people from all ages and all walks of life, who could be heard throughout the

hour and many people showed up with their family and friends as well as their pets.

Anna seeks help with soup kitchen Sharlien Tjambari

Who says real Samaritans do not exist? Mrs Anna Karises is a lady who owns a soup kitchen called Ann’s Angels Soup Kitchen, located in Swakopmund’s informal settlement, DRC. Anna gives soup to children whose parents are not able to feed them. The group consists of 50 children, both school and vulnerable children. They all gather at the kitchen after school and wait with patience to be served. Ann’s Angels Soup Kitchen started operating in February this year. Anna started off with the little she had, at first she used to give the food to the children in the open because

she didn’t have materials to build a shack where the children could sit and eat. A few months after she started, Rotary Engineering offered a helping hand and donated hardboards and poles for the establishment of the soup kitchen. Anna is struggling to feed the children as she does not have any source of income. With the little money she gets from her husband, she buys groceries for the kitchen.

Anna said she needs help from companies, shops and individuals. “I want them to assist me with groceries so I can feed the children, even if it is a bag of potatoes, it will be very much appreciated. I have developed a good relationship with these children and they are very fond of me. I do not want to see the children going to bed hungry” said Mrs Karises. So far, the Swakopmund Abattoir has helped her

GRN cleaners take NAPWU to task Jade McClune A number of government institutional workers, including cleaners, matrons and labourers from various ministries protested outside the offices of the Namibia Public Workers Union (NAPWU) on Friday. The protest follows a request by the police that the workers cancel the march planned for 26 September, when Prime Minister Hage Geingob was in town. The workers returned to the scene on Friday. They say their demands and needs are being ignored by NAPWU, leaving them little choice but to take to the streets. The group of protesters, who are mainly women, said that they have repeatedly raised their concerns with the union, but to no avail. “With a meagre salary of N$2 000, how will you support a family with food, shelter, education, clothes... while ministers get all this for free?” they asked in their grievance letter. The cleaners demand a basic salary of at least N$8 000: “We can’t afford to buy houses as we are underpaid. We are also not invited to workshops or training events. We are not invited to take part in sports activities,” they said. “The discrimination is still like in the apartheid era. People in the offices are the only ones that can pursue further studies”, whereas cleaners are denied such opportunities, they said. “There is no promotion system for cleaners. We can’t get study loans or advice... Once a cleaner, always a cleaner.” They also claim that they are obliged to perform other functions, such as monitoring the switchboard, without any training or compensation.

They says they are discriminated against when it comes to sports and other events, that the medical aid scheme is insufficient and that they are not fairly considered for promotions, which they claim are reserved for people from “certain ethnic groups” and relatives of managers. One of the leading organisers, Ms Constancia Shimaneni said on Friday: “This has been going on for several years, because no union has represented us before. We are all human beings. Take us into consideration and attend to our demands. We have families to support. How are we going to survive with a basic salary of N$2 400?” The cleaners also say they are obliged to perform duties that are above their pay grade. The workers had sent their letter of grievance to NAPWU at the end of July but no response was forthcoming, spurring them on to take action against the union leadership. “We have spoken to the NAPWU representatives several times and we wrote

They claimed that some of them have worked on contract for more than four years and do not receive training. They also allege that permanent and temporary employees apparently do the same work, but are paid differently. “We are still on the system of no work, no pay, as it was in colonial times,” some of the Sure Cast employees present during the demonstration said. At RVH the employees apparently do not have contracts of employment and are paid low wages. They also claimed that they do not receive increments. The employees of NEC Stahl meanwhile alleged that workers injured at work do not get compensation and recruitment is

Workers employed by companies sub-contracted to LHU claim they are mistreated at work. Mr Tuhafeni Petrus, regional chairperson of the Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) read out a petition on Friday outside the company’s offices in Swakopmund, outlining the concerns of contract workers. The workers from Sure Cast, Gecko Drilling, LBS, Quick Investment, RVH and NEC Stahl claim they are, amongst others, made to work without benefits, such as medical aid, transport allowances and pension. MUN’s regional organiser, Mr Kleopas Ngwena said the mine management has been refusing to meet them and hear their grievances, that’s why they decided to demonstrate. “We are under threat by our management, we are being treated like prisoners every

John Ngolombe of the NAPWU regional leadership received their petition and agreed to forward it to the relevant authorities. NAPWU has repeatedly come under fire from civil servants, including teachers, who say that the union is not adequately representing them. Mr Ngolombe said last week that he forwarded the workers’ letter to NAPWU head office in Windhoek and is awaiting a response from his superiors. “Nobody came to me to let me know (about mistreatment). It is not the job of the union to sniff out every problem. They should tell us, so that we can deal with the issues and investigate.” NAPWU is affiliated to the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW), which is in turn affiliated to the governing Swapo Party.

She also needs gas, if there is anyone who is willing to buy her a bottle of gas, she has a stove that she uses during bad weather, especially when it is too windy and she is not able to cook outside. But sometimes she runs out of gas. Most of all she needs assistance with food products. If there is anyone out there who have an extra big pot that they are not using please donate it to her. Anna is doing all the cooking and the dishing out of soup alone, she said she wouldn’t mind having someone to help her. Spreading the Word EBH Namibia once again demonstrates its commitment to a better life for all Namibians through reading programme sponsorship. Ship repair company Elgin Brown &Hamer (EBH) Namibia has demonstrated once more its commitment to a better life for all Namibians. In line with the government's 'Vision 2030', the company has made a substantial donation towards a local reading programme in order to enhance the quality of teaching and introduce children to a world of learning through books. The Erongo Region Ministry of Education, in launching its 'Erongo Reading Programme', aims to address poor levels of reading ability in the region by exposing learners to a wider range of books and developing the skills of teachers. This initiative reflects the philosophies at the heart of EBH Namibia, a company which places

learning, skills development and training at the top of its own agenda. “Developing people is at the core of our corporate culture, a philosophy which filters through our organisation and out into the community. As a business we have a responsibility and an obligation to exert a positive influence on our immediate social environment. One of the ways in which we can do this is to support educational initiatives such as the Reading Programme, and it is our honour to do so,” says Hannes Uys, Chief Executive Officer of EBH Namibia. The company has also recently invested in an affordable housing project by developing a piece of land procured for the sole purpose of building some 220 houses for its em-

ployees. Taking into account the socio-economic needs of the Namibian people and working together to find solutions is what Vision 2030 is about, says Uys. “The government has called on the private sector to partner with the public sector and other entities to help raise the quality of life and standard of living of the Namibian people. Housing and education are two fundamental areas in which EBH can make a difference in our region,” he says. “Vision 2030 is everybody's responsibility,” says John Awaseb, Director of the Erongo Region Ministry of Education. “Corporate sponsorship, such as from EBH Namibia, together with the Ministry of Education will strengthen Vision 2030 and make it a

It is our aim to turn the situation

around by making books more accessible to learners, to provide the time and space for them to read, and most importantly, to build 'reading stamina' among our learners in a world with so many electronic distractions,” says Awaseb. He continues: “We are immensely grateful to EBH Namibia for sharing our vision and ma-

king such a generous financial donation to the Reading Programme. One cannot overstate the importance of reading in education. EBH's contribution will not only raise the standard of reading, but will also support the continuous professional development of our teachers. Quality teaching will yield quality results.”

“Reading and learning are fundamental building blocks to a prosperous future for Namibia and her people,” Uys adds. “A programme which aims to encourage learning and personal development is 'music to our ears' at EBH Namibia. We wish the Erongo Ministry of Education well in implementing this exciting initiative.”

Ice Bucket challenge is on Madelaine Laubscher

On Friday Transworld Cargo took part in the well-known 'Ice Bucket' challenge that has gone viral all over the world for a good cause and thereby challenged the namib times and Transworld Cargo in Windhoek to follow in their footsteps. A spokesperson at the Walvis Bay branch of Transworld Cargo, Mrs Estie Steenkamp, said she initiated the idea to have an ice bucket challenge for a good cause. “I initiated the idea because we wanted to help two of our staff members, Mr Immanuel Nuseb and Mr Steven Jacobs, who lost everything they owned in a shack fire in August. My colleagues and I collected a sum of N$400 amongst each other and the company decided to double the amount to N$800 to help them. We wanted to make a fun event out of it and thus decided to do the ice bucket challenge. We challenge the namib times and Transworld Cargo in Windhoek to do the ice bucket challenge for a good cause,” she said.

The Ice Bucket challenge is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice and water on someone's head to promote awareness of a disease called amyotrophic leteral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research. It went viral on social media during July and August. Many people participate for the ALS Association although some individuals have opted to donate their money from the Ice Bucket Challenge to other organisations. The challenge encourages nominated participants to be filmed having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads and then nominating others to do the same. A common stipulation is that nominated participants have 24 hours to comply or forfeit by way of a charitable financial donation.

Protected areas offer glimmers of hope for wildlife

The aftermath

National parks and other protected areas offer hope for threatened species at a time of plunging wildlife numbers, conservationist group WWF said Tuesday, but their success has not been universal. While the headcount of land-dwelling animals declined an estimated 39 percent overall from 1970 to 2012, that of species in protected areas dropped at the lower rate of 18 percent, the organisation said in its 2014 Living Planet Report. “Populations in protected areas are faring better than terrestrial populations as a whole,” said the biennial WWF update on the state of Earth’s dwindling natural bounty. It reported an alarming 52 percent drop in vertebrate numbers in less than two human generations based on trends in 3 038 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish monitored. This represented a 39 percent decline in land- and sea-dwelling animal numbers, and a drop of 76 percent for sea creatures. The cause was humans hunting, fishing and destroying animal habitats at rates that Nature could not replenish and would require 1.5 Earths to satisfy, said the report. But some

trends among protected species were “encouraging”. Similarly, the small population of endangered mountain gorillas left in Africa’s war-ravaged Great Lakes region, increased by about 30 percent in recent years the only species of great ape not in decline. They still number fewer than 1 000 individuals, living in two small islands of forest, and are receiving protection thanks, in part, to a thriving gorilla-watching tourism industry providing local jobs. The WWF highlighted, however, that threats to species cannot be mitigated “by the designation of a protected area alone”, and highlighted the need to enforce measures within protected borders. Bad news for rhinos “In some African protected areas, declines in large mammal species have been unabated,” said the report - citing rhino losses in several countries - their horns used in traditional potions in Asia. “Many rhino populations in Africa have be-

come regionally extinct or are in decline, despite largely occurring inside protected areas.” The population of black and white rhinos found mainly in four countries: South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Kenya, had declined 63 percent from 1980 to 2006, said the report. There are fewer than 5 000 black and about 20 000 white rhino left in the wild today. The black rhino is considered at very high risk of extinction and the white rhino near-threatened. The animals’ plight, said the WWF, was exacerbated by “growing demand for rhino horn in Asia, particularly Vietnam; weak governance and poor law enforcement in countries with wild rhinos; and the increase in corruption and emergence of crime syndicates attracted by the high profits from the rhino horn trade.” Claire Snegaroff Adapted from NAMPA / AFP

Threats of an industry-wide strike among seafarers and fishing factory workers took on renewed force on Friday when hundreds of workers from various unions took to the streets to demand redress over what they termed ‘despicable conditions of employment and exploitation’. been coming on for a long time, but we will be patient and wait until Wednesday,” the chairperson of the shop stewards committee said yesterday. In an address at one of the factories on Friday, Mr Petrus said some companies do not always pay their overtime and night allowances: “Why not enforce my overtime? Who are you not to enforce it? Who are you to take it away? We are not kids. We are also adults.” He said that when workers are ill, they are not paid for the days they are on sick leave and they are unhappy about the terms of the medical aid benefit, which does not adequately cover them in times of emergency. Some also have to buy their own protective gear, he said. The seafarers gave the ministry 14 days to respond to their concerns. According to NBC News, the workers spoke about nepotism, colonialism, slavery and exploitation, when describing their working conditions within the industry. The Namibian Sun quoted some protesters as saying that the bosses are making huge profits at the expense

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Protesters during the march on Friday of the workforce: “We cannot allow the capitalist system, which is only concerned about making profit, to abuse us any longer. None of us own houses and we are earning peanuts.” Mr Petrus says the black empowerment schemes that were expected to improve the standard of living of Namibian people, has not helped. He said in many cases the black owners were worse than the whites and have put on “colonial shoes”. “Black man’s colonialism is even worse than white man’s colonialism”, Petrus said in a telephonic interview with the namib

times on Monday. “Black economic empowerment (BEE) was supposed to assist the nation, but it only benefits a few people”, leaving many workers in a desperate situation, he said. “Some people accuse us of trying to overthrow the government, or of overthrowing the Swapo Party. Some even accuse the workers of being Koevoets, but we are only seafarers trying to improve our living conditions.” The march was exceptional, inasmuch as it united workers from various unions, including the Namibia Food and Allied

Workers Union (NAFAU), Namibia Seafarers and Allied Workers union (NASAU) and the Namibian Fishing Industries (NFI). Immanuel says it took hard work and dedication from the shop stewards to bring all the unions together in a united front: “We are determined to get rid of the rubbish in our unions and to unite seafarers across the industry. We will go as far as Lüderitz to bring the workers together.” The unions have given the industry 48 hours to respond before they undertake further action.

The Friday march started in Kuisebmond and proceeded to the industrial area, where protesters rallied outside the premises of each fishing company that they accused of mistreating them. The march ended at the Office of the Ministry of Labour, where the unions called on the minister of labour to attend to the issues raised in a grievance letter previously sent to her office. The fishermen were not able to hand over their petition to the chairperson of the Association of Pelagic Industries, Mr Matti Amukwa, as he was in Spain at the time, so they left the petition under the door and presented the document to Mr Abraham Kamutoto on Monday. The workers are concerned about how their wages are calculated, and claim they are not paid overtime, night allowances, or sick leave. The workers maintain that local fishing companies do not comply with the labour laws and demanded clarity from the ministry about ordinary working hours, payment for overtime, meal breaks and nightshift allowances. “These problems have

More than a third of population to live in Khomas and Erongo

NAMIB TIMES

More than a third of Namibia's population will live in the Khomas and Erongo regions by 2041, the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) showed on Thursday. NSA Statistician-General Dr John Steytler said while releasing the Population Projections' Report 2011-2041 at a media conference here that the recent immigration patterns will continue into the future, therefore the number of people living in rural areas are expected to shrink gradually. “The share of the population living in urban areas is projected to increase from 43 percent in 2011 to 67 percent in 2041. It is projected that over a third of Namibia's population will live in the Khomas and Erongo Regions by 2041,” he stated. In the Khomas Region, where the bulk of the population lives in the capital, the population will increase from 340 000 at the census count in 2011 to 645 000 by 2030 - an increase of 305 000 people. In the last decade, Erongo reported a population of 107 663 in 2001 that jumped to 150 809 in 2011, according to statistics issued by the NSA in 2013.

It has also been predicted that Namibia's population will be 3.4 million by the year 2041. Steytler said the agency's projections showed that in a most-likely scenario the population of Namibia will increase from a census count of 2.1 million in 2011 to 3.4 million by 2041. This represents an increase of 63 percent compared to the year 2011. In a lower case scenario the population will increase to 3.3 million while in a higher case scenario, it could reach 3.6 million. Projections also show that during the period 2015 to 2030, Namibia's population is expected to grow from 2.3 million to 3 million, or by 30 percent. In other words, over the next 15 years the Namibian population will increase by 700 000. Furthermore, due to a projected fertility decline, over the next 15 years, the share of the population under the age of 15 years will decline modestly from 36.4 percent to 33.7 per-

cent. In contrast, the proportion of the population at age 65 and above is expected to remain fixed at about 4.5 percent. The total fertility rate (expected births per woman) is expected to decline from 3.9 percent in 2011 to 2.4 by 2041. Life expectancy at birth is projected to rise by 11 years for men and 12 years for women from 2011 to 2041. “At the outset, is should be noted that nobody can predict with certainty the future population of a country, hence population projections are made on the basis of assumptions relating to the future behaviour of the levels of fertility, mortality and migration. These are the most important factors that affect population change,” Steytler said. The size of the future population is useful for the estimation of future demands for food, housing and social services. ~ NAMPA

KLD set the wheels in motion and with great support from the Namibian Rugby Union (NRU), a total of 45 Namibian rugby jerseys were ordered from their supplier. Time was not in everyone's favour but the

NRU took delivery of the jerseys on Friday and with the kind assistance and support from DHL, these Namibian rugby jerseys were delivered to KLD on Saturday morning . The “Noble Tom Madden” arrived at anchorage punctually yesterday morning and the jerseys were delivered on board the drill ship via launch.

WCE and Namibia Table Tennis challenges all

Windhoek Consulting Engineers (WCE) has joint ventured with the N a m i b i a n Ta b l e Tennis Association's (NTTA) to host the first ever Table Tennis for All tournament scheduled to take place at the Police Table Tennis Club on Saturday 18 October.

WCE, a leading local Consulting Engineering company from the capital, sponsored N$5 000 for this event. “We are happy to be associated with the NTTA and hope that this event is a success and that there will be many more to come in the future”, WCE's Managing Director, Johan du Toit, said. The tournament will be open to everyone playing table tennis, even on a social basis, from all age categories. The aim is to have fun and to promote Table Tennis as a sport and you could even win prize money. The new and exciting event will work as follows: The NTTA

will set up 6 tables. 2 tables for seniors, 2 tables for juniors (under 18) and 2 tables for Non-NTTA registered social players. At each table, a game called "Beat the Champ" will be played. Beat the Champ can be best described as a game during which anyone player challenges the "Champion" of his respective division at a specific table. Social players can, however, challenge everyone. A player becomes the "Champion" should he defeat the current champion at a specific table. A player only makes points while being "Champion". A point is earned by

winning a match and a match is comprised out of 1 game/set. Players can challenge as many times as they want. Scores will be kept at each table; and the overall winner is the person with the highest amount of accumulated points; and the player who had the longest consecutive run as champion. In addition to the above, a "Beer Pong" competition will be organised on a 7th table. The point of the game is to get a TT ball into a glass filled with water. Lunch and drinks will be made available at a good price. Braai plates can be ordered in advance whilst hotdogs will be

available through-out the day. More details to follow closer to the event. Companies are encouraged to use this opportunity for team building. “There is truly nothing more FUN than playing Table Tennis with a “Plankie”. It's hilarious and challenging at the same time and perfect to bring people tog e t h e r ” , N T TA ' s S e c r e t a r y, H e i k o Fleidl, said. Entry fee is N$ 30 per person. No pre-registration is required. (For planning purposes, it is recommended that participants give notice to the NTTA via email to info.ntta@gmail.com on or before Wednesday 15 October.

Maritime students to participate Ibiza’s first super yacht sailing regatta On Friday two Grade 11 students, Bradley Felix (17) and Ronaldo Strauss (17) left South Africa for Spain where they will participate in the Ibiza Rendezvous, the first super-yacht sailing regatta to embrace the island of Ibiza between 8 and 11 October. The trip forms part of a new charitable mentoring programme, ‘Marine Inspirations’ which aims to expose young South Africans from disadvantaged backgrounds to hands-on seamanship experience and possible career opportunities in the world of yachting. ‘Marine Inspirations’ is the brainchild of two South African super-yacht captains, Phil Wade and Anthony Just who, following a captains-lunch in Mallorca Spain earlier this year, reflected on how the quality maritime training they will receive in South Africa had contributed to their career success. This led to an agreed desire to share their good fortunes with the less fortunate in Southern Africa. During the Ibiza Rendezvous sailing regatta, Bradley and Ronaldo, both students at Simon’s Town School’s Lawhill Maritime Centre will join the Marine Inspirations crew aboard an 83 foot classic schooner where they will gain the practical and valuable boat-handling

skills considered to be fundamental to good seamanship. The trip will be a hugely exciting experience for the two, who hail from the Eastern Cape and Namibia, as they will be travelling abroad for the first time. It will also be Bradley’s first trip in an aircraft. Their life-changing trip to Spain has been made possible by Phil and Anthony’s initiative which is also well recognised and endorsed by the General Botha Old Boys Bursary Fund, amongst other private donors. For the past 18 years the Lawhill Maritime Centre at Simons Town High School has successfully increased the post-school employment prospects of its students by providing them with maritime knowledge and skills while they are at school. Lawhill’s effectiveness in helping to address youth unemployment and poverty in South Africa has been recognised both in South Africa and internationally, with several awards includ-

Bradley Felix (17) and Ronaldo Strauss (17) ing The ‘Lloyds List Salute to Youth and Training’ Award (London, 1999), the international Seatrade ‘Investment in Youth’ Award (London, 2012) and a Platinum Award from the Impumelelo Social Innovation Centre (Cape Town, 2013). Because Lawhill receives no state funding, its students, the majority of who come from financially-stressed homes, are reliant on bursaries provided by maritime and related industries and individuals

to fund their education and boarding at Lawhill from Grade 10 - 12. A number of former Lawhill students have gone on to pursue careers in the yachting industry, the vast majority work in the shipping industry, either at sea or ashore. By the end of the year, Lawhill will have three of its former students as internationally qualified shipmasters. Student, Ronaldo Strauss, is from Lüderitz/Namibia.
