Woman goes on rampage
Madelaine Laubscher and Piquet Jacobs A woman went on a rampage at the office of the namib times on Wednesday morning, destroying a computer and verbally attacked office staff, angered by a request from a journalist to submit a written account of her story.
Ms Merlyn Ehileme requested a journalist on Monday to have her life story published. “I am a medical doctor, a reporter, a prophetess,” she proclaimed and alleged that her father and her husband were murdered by her aunt and she wanted to expose this in the newspaper. She further alleged that her aunt attempted to kill her the previous day. “My family has tried to get their hands on my fortune and to silence me by putting me into a mental institute. My children have been abducted and are hidden from me in Nigeria,” she charged. Due to the seriousness of her allegations the journal-
ist requested Ms Ehileme to write a full account of her story and send it via email to ensure accuracy. She told the journalist that she was flying to Windhoek later that evening to conduct some operations on patients, but agreed to email her story. When she returned to the newspaper’s office on Wednesday morning, she demanded that the journalist write her story instead. The insistence by the journalist for Ehileme to submit a written account angered her and she became aggressive. She made death threats to the journalist and personnel at the reception area. “I will not send an email.

My husband (which she previously stated was allegedly murdered) told me not to write an email. You will listen to me now,” she started shouting and swearing. Another journalist was requested to come and defuse the situation. He also told her to email the story as agreed on Monday. Chaos erupted. Ehileme grabbed a paper punch and a stapler and threw the objects in the direction of the employees yelling, ‘I will not email my story to you” and accused the reporters of wanting to steal her story. She attempted to grab and smash the computer monitor at the reception but was

prevented from doing so by one of the journalists. This further fuelled her fury and she leaned forward to grab one of the female employees whose screams caused more of the staff members to rush to the reception area. When Ehileme realised that her efforts were thwarted, she turned around and walked out of the office. The receptionist pressed the panic button and called the police. G4S personnel arrived and after getting an explanation of what had transpired, they went searching for Ehileme. She was found in a local electrical store looking at appliances. The proposed plant will be located at the existing Swakopmund Salt Works, about 6 km north of Swakopmund and would produce around three million cubic metres of water per year. The mine has, since November 2013, been supplied with desalinated water from Areva’s desalination plant near Wlotzkasbaken, but could not reach agreement with Areva over the cost. In a statement released on Thursday, the company said that “as a result of low uranium market prices, Rössing Uranium is looking at ways to improve its economic viability… Currently, Rössing Uranium purchases desalinated water for its mining operations at significant cost.” The mine indicated that the terms offered by Areva were not “economically feasible”, therefore it was decided to construct
a new plant to supply the mine’s water needs. In recent times, the region relied mainly on the Omdel aquifer for its water supply, but the further expansion and sustainability of mining operations in the region have been severely hampered by the gradual depletion of the underground water resources in the Omaruru Delta (Omdel) aquifer. The Omdel previously supplied the coastal towns and mines in the Erongo Region with millions of cubic metres of freshwater per year. In response to the situation, Rössing intends to set up a Modular Seawater Reverse Osmosis desalination plant with the capacity to produce 8 200m³ per day. Over the past decade NamWater has also repeatedly threatened to build its own desalination plant at Mile 6 and justified regularly increasing the tariffs for Continues on page 2

and confronted her about the incident at the newspaper she started to insult him. When a journalist tried to take a photo, Ehileme started to chase her down Sam Nujoma Avenue while shouting death threats. She went down the streets of Walvis Bay, causing havoc to motorists and civilians assaulting anyone within her reach. She even walked in front of oncoming vehicles and banged the cars with her fists if the drivers did not stop. She walked into Foschini and assaulted one woman. Police officers who arrivied at the scene, were not sure how to handle the situation as Ehileme’s behaviour suggested she could be mentally unstable. A G4S security guard said the same woman gave residents of Kuisebmond a tough time with her aggressive behaviour. She also terrorised people at Probst, Grobbies Estates’ office, and the library before walking to Welwitchia Hospital, where she was even-
tually cornered by members of the defence force and police officials. It took a great amount of patience and time to calm her down. She was then accompanied by the police to the police station. The newspaper sought verification of Ms Ehileme’s claims that she is a doctor who practised at Katutura Hospital in Windhoek. Mr Cornelius Weyulu , registrar and chief executive officer of the Health Professions Councils of Namibia responded,” We confirm that the person by the name Merlyn Ehileme is NOT registered as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical and Dental Council of Namibia. Having not been so registered with the aforesaid Council and unless authorised by the Minister of Health and Social Services for purposes of the public sector only, such a person is not allowed to practice Medicine in Namibia. household water on the basis that the funds would be used to build such a plant for residential and business purposes. In January 2013 Namwater was still promising to start building its plant any time soon, but to date nothing has materialised. Rössing also noted that “the outcome, timelines and commercial aspects to this (Namwater) project remain uncertain”. “Therefore, Rössing Uranium wishes to investigate an alternate source for desalinated seawater in an effort to reduce the cost of its mining operations and enhance its commercial sustainability.” However, before work on the proposed plant can start, a Social and Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA)
will be conducted in order to assess relevant concerns of the public and to obtain environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. SLR Environmental Consulting Namibia and Aurecon Namibia will jointly manage the SEIA process for the proposed plant. Interested members of the public and affected parties are invited to register with the consultants at SLR on 064-402 317 (phone) or 064 403 327 (fax) or by writing to wpetrick@ slrconsulting.com. Further details of the desalination project are likely to emerge at a media briefing session scheduled for 31 July at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre.
Continued from page 1 A three-day workshop on Food and Nutrition Security attended by Civic leaders in Windhoek resolved to drive urban agriculture in order to end hunger in Namibia. The Workshop on Food and Nutrition Security was organised by the City of Windhoek, the City of Belo Horizonte (Brazil), the World Future Council and the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). A declaration, adopted by mayors, policymakers, technicians, experts, and representatives of civil society organisations, promises a review of national policy and legal frameworks and a commitment to harmonise current efforts tackling food and nutrition security. First concrete measures will oversee the establishment of Food Banks and greening the riverbeds in Windhoek. Mayors and municipalities will be working on implementing the agreed objectives. “We will be showing you the greatest political will this country has ever
seen,” said Mr Marco Hausiku, Deputy Prime Minister, at the closing ceremony of the workshop yesterday and thanked the World Future Council for facilitating this timely workshop. The organisation invited experts from the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte to share successful solutions on food and nutrition security. Plans are already underway to turn neglected riverbeds into gardens, where the city’s most deprived citizens will be able to plant and harvest vegetables in Windhoek, where the informal settlement population is growing at a rate of 4-5 percent each year. The city had been struggling to provide residents with access to sufficient and healthy foods. The World Future Council consists of 50 eminent
global change-makers from governments, parliaments, civil society, academia, the arts and business. They work to pass on a healthy planet and just societies to our children and grandchildren with a focus on identifying and spreading effective, futurejust policy solutions. The World Future Council was launched in 2007 by Jakob von Uexkull, Founder of the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’. It operates as an independent foundation under German law and finances its activities from donations. Recommendations adopted at the end of the workshop by the participants after thorough deliberation include recognising the urgent need to address the challenges in food and nutrition security the country is facing and ensure food and nutrition security for future
generations at national and local level. The stakeholders also committed themselves to engage in a multi-stakeholder dialogue on food and nutrition security governance and interventions at different levels: from local to national, from public to private, including but not limited to civil society and international organisations, and media. The participants acknowledged the need to develop and implement solutions relevant to their situations, including reviewing the policy and legal framework at national level, developing solutions for financing efforts at local level, and connecting political and technical will. A recommendation was also made to harmonise efforts to tackle food and nutrition security in Namibia and build networks for multi-level stakeholder
dialogue, partnerships, capacity building and implementation of follow-up actions. The delegates also concurred to engage to realise the concrete recommendations, action plans and time frames that have been developed at the Workshop, especially with regards to the establishment of Food Banks in Namibia and the promotion of urban and peri-urban agriculture and city-region linkages. They also recommend that the Association of Local Authorities (ALAN) facilitates the establishment of an inter-municipal technical task force whose mandate is to engage further relevant stakeholders with the view to implementing concrete recommendations and action plans that have been developed at the workshop.
NAC shortcomings downgrade Hosea Kutako Staff Reporter
Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport has been downgraded from Category 9 to Category 5, effective from 23 July 2014. This shocking announcement by VIAGEM follows after an audit by the Directorate of Civil Aviation (DCA) on the facilities of the Namibia Airports Company (NAC). The moratorium came into effect due to the alleged inadequacy of fire and rescue equipment of the NAC. The NAC owns and manages eight airports in Namibia namely Hosea Kutako, Ondangwa, Rundu, Katima Mulilo, Walvis Bay, Eros, Keetmanshoop
and Lüderitz. The downgrading of the airport pose negative implications on the take-offs and landing of amongst others, VIAGEM’s A330200 aircraft, which requires a category 8 airport for landing and takeoff. They are thus not authorised to operate into and out of Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport with the A330-200, with immediate effect. It is expected that the NAC will execute and rectify
the respective shortcomings, which will result in the international airport being upgraded to Category 9. Further updates on the normal operations of the A330-200 aircraft to/ from Hosea Kutako will be communicated in due course. To minimise the impact of the inconvenience caused to passengers as a result of the NAC’s shortcomings, Air Namibia has in the meantime initiated the following;
• Flight SW 286 from Frankfurt to Windhoek on 23 July was diverted to land at Gaborone in Botswana on the morning of 24 July. • Flight SW 285 from Windhoek to Frankfurt scheduled to depart on 23 July was cancelled. Affected passengers were ferried to Gaborone in Botswana on the morning of 24 July from where they boarded Air Namibia’s flight to Frankfurt on the same morning. All affected passengers were

informed to be at Hosea Kutako Airport in time for departure of the ferry flight to Gaborone at 04:00 (local time). • Passengers who arrived on SW 286 at Gaborone from Frankfurt on the morning of 24 July were ferried from Gaborone to Windhoek the same morning using two of Air Namibia’s Airbus A319-100 aircraft. All enquiries from passengers can be directed to Air Namibia’s Call Centre.

The proposed multi-billion dollar Desert Rose Development Project, south of the coastal town of Swakopmund, is getting heat from Swakopmund Matters and local residents, regarding the fact that they have not received any notification of a public meeting, or any documentation of any kind, detailing what is envisaged and how the public will be involved in the consultative process. Swakopmund Matters was formed in 2011 when they originally started lobbying against all the negative effects GECKO’s planned Industrial Complex north of Swakopmund would have on the town’s environment and its inhabitants. According to them, a request, via email to register Swakopmund Matters as an Interested and Affected Par-
ty (I&AP) for the proposed Desert Rose Project was sent on 23 May 2014, but yielded nothing. Scrutiny of the Environmental Management Act, 2007 (Act No 7 of 2007) confirms that its whole purpose is to ensure that the significant effects of activities on the environment are considered in time. It further states that all I&AP’s are consulted and al-
lowed to participate throughout the whole process. In an official letter to the Environmental Commissioner in Windhoek, Mr Teofilus Nghitila, Swakopmund Matters warns that this project “will not escape constant scrutiny by the public and that public opinion will say no to any project which will blatantly jeopardise an environment whose well-being is
enshrined in the Namibian Constitution. The letter also states that Swakopmund Matters and the vast majority of Swakopmund residents are determined that the public consultation process must be properly handled, by way of one or more public meetings to ensure that the required interaction is not compromised in any way. The email ad-
ded that, with the interest in their environment directly at stake, the 1 500 contacts of Swakopmund Matters have the right to know that their voices will not be silenced, but be afforded the opportunity to raise their concerns in public. “If their voices are not allowed to be heard in public, the process shall be regarded as totally flawed, hopelessly inade-
quate and failing to satisfy the dictates of legislative and regulatory prescriptions.” Swakopmund Matters also makes it clear that they are not against progress or development, but encourages it to be orchestrated in a structured and coordinated way and in accordance with the Constitution, which demands a sustainable environment for current and
future generations. The letter of concern furthermore cautions that the Dorob has been established first and foremost for the preservation of a heritage and treasure, dear to the Nation and most definitely not for business ventures, which will directly destroy that, which is legally protected from harm.

The Namibia Youth Credit Scheme (NYCS) will conduct a four day skills-training workshop in Walvis Bay next month to help unemployed and self- employed youth in the region. The workshop will be attended by 25 entrepreneurs, chosen by NYCS. The youth credit initiative run by the Namibia Rural Development Project (NRDP) will allow the youth of Namibia access to capital and enable them to play a significant role in the socio-economic development of the country. The integrated program is provided to simplify Business Management training and giving loans to the qualifying entrepreneurs. The loans are issued in four stages ranging in price from N$2 000 to N$20 000. In order to be a part of the scheme, interested individuals must be aged between the ages of 18-35 and must be employed or self-employed. Thomas Ankhoshi, the Regional Credit Officer of NRDP added that NYCS is planning to create 13 000 jobs through the establishment of a self-employment programme.
Thomas Ankhoshi The programme will also offer basic business management skills to at least 5 000 youths to give them the necessary entrepreneurial knowledge needed to enter into the competitive business world. The recipients of the loans will be monitored by all the relevant stakeholders, to make sure the programmes runs smoothly. The programme is currently only active in eight regions but after the training of next month the Erongo, Otjozondjuba, Hardap, Karas and Khomas Regions will become part of the programme.

Walvis Bay Court Report A car wreck in a residential area
Traffic officers' appeal Madelaine Laubscher
The Traffic department of Walvis Bay has raised concern regarding vehicles left in public areas after instructions were given to remove these vehicles . The Chief Traffic Officer of Walvis Bay, Mr Eben Platt, spoke to the namib times to voice his concern about numerous issues which include trucks, wrecks and trailers parked in the street and the reluctance to heed the call. According to Platt many truck owners leave their trucks parked outside their yards be it in suburbs or industrial areas. “Trucks parked in an open area pose a risk as it is an obstruction to other drivers. We urge you to find a proper parking space/yard for your trucks as soon as possible as we are going to take legal action against those who do not comply with the rules,” he warned. He also urged vehicle owners who repair vehicles outside their yards to remove them without delay. “Vehicles should be taken to a proper mechanical business and not serviced in the street as we see people do. This includes trailers. We see trailers on street without wheels. When we want to take down the details of the trailer, no identification on the trailers are to be seen. This makes it hard for us to get hold of the owners so that we can ask them to remove the vehicles. There are a lot of vehicle
wreckages especially in Narraville and Kuisebmond. This is not allowed. Find a proper storage place for these vehicles,” he said. Mr Platt also urged everyone that has building material in front of their homes to move it because it is not allowed to be on the street. To motorists, he said, “I cannot ask the drivers at the coast enough to be more careful on the roads and to adhere to the rules. The spate of accidents that have occurred up to now is extremely disturbing. Drivers are simply reckless. People break the simple traffic rules. An example of this is the entrance into Walvis Bay where it is clearly stated the speed limit is 60km/h, yet most of the drivers ignore the solid lines and the speed limit,” he said. “We urge vehicle owners and drivers to change their attitudes. It is not the roads that are dangerous, but rather the drivers that are ignorant. We will soon take legal steps against those who have parked trucks, wreckages and trailers outside their yards. We will also place traffic signs in town stating that it is illegal to park these vehicles in open areas,” he concluded. The Walvis Bay traffic department have also warned errant drivers diverting from the B2 highway to gain entry into the Narraville and Kuisebmond residential areas to stop this practise. Two drivers were seen turning into the undesignated roads to the residential areas last Thursday violating the road
markin gs pr ohibitin g motorists to cross over them. The open space adjacent Narraville and Kuisebmond along the B2 highway is next to the sand dunes. The short cut routes were initially traversed by the 4x4 vehicle drivers because their vehicles could not get stuck in the sand. Continuous use of the illegal entry routes hardened the road surface and made it safe for the small vehicles and bakkies to pass through without getting stuck . Mr Platt, voiced his concern regarding this dangerous new trend. “We often receive complaints about drivers crossing the yellow lines on the B2, creating their own roads from the B2 in order to get to Kuisebmond or Narraville faster. This is considered a danger to other drivers and themselves as the B2 is a very busy road, and they are deliberately disobeying the fact that there are yellow lines, as well as double solid lines in that specific section of the road,” he said. He suggested erecting barriers on the sides of the road in order to prevent drivers from diverting into the illegal roads. “Drivers who are guilty of this act are blatantly disregarding the traffic rules and regulations. You are posing a danger to other drivers. Serious accidents could result from such unruly behaviour. I urge the motorists not to violate the markings but to use the legal routes to and from Narraville and Kuisebmond,” he warned.

Banking details scam still prevalent
The Bankers Association of Namibia (BAN) advised in a media statement recently that they would make the public aware, on a regular basis, of scams that are still happening in Namibia and that people should be aware of. Last week BAN concentrated on the prizeand-lottery scam, which is advance fee fraud, whereby people are led to believe they have won a huge prize, but can only collect if they pay for legal and administrative duties first. “This week we would like to make fellow Namibians aware of the change of banking details/letterhead scam,” says Ian Leyenaar, chairman of the Bankers Association of Namibia. “This is a letter sent/circulated to companies, supposedly from a supplier or debtor, who indicates that they have changed their banking details. The new banking details are conveniently provided and some of the creditors would
then make a payment to this newly provided account, only to find out at a later stage when the legitimate supplier queries why no payment has been done - that the bank details provided was a scam. This has happened to numerous companies over the years and more often than not the money is almost immediately withdrawn and lost forever.” Leyenaar, who is also the CEO of FNB Namibia, advised that customers/ businesses should never make any payments after receipt of new banking details. “Please verify all such information with your supplier/debtor, or with the bank, before any payments are made.”

The volume of car imports coming through the port of Walvis Bay has grown exponentially over the years and with it a corresponding growth in the supply chain.
higher accommodation bills for the prolonged stay. “The other problem is there is no uniformity of document details which presents a challenge,” she said. She added that importers who put personal goods inside the cars are creating fertile ground for bribery and also blamed the shipping lines for not advising the importers to declare the goods inside the vehicles. “It involves a hell lot of work. A lot of the briefcase companies do not help their clients in all the glitches they encounter. With everything going wrong in the clearing process someone in the supply chain is making money, from Namport who charges extra for storage, the extension of the days, the accommodation people and all else. It is the driver who suffers in the end.” A manager of a shipping company however refuted some of the issues advanced by the clearing agents. “The shipping lines are doing their job but some of these
importers want to smuggle goods, that is why they do not declare them. They take shortcuts and do not declare or under declare the goods. Importers who toe the line do not suffer these problems. Don’t blame the shipping lines because we do not employ mechanics to remove the parts,” lambasted the manager. He added that the thefts must be taking place along the way and particularly along the West African coast during stops because the ports do not have security measures in place like at Namport. At the other ports people get on board when the ships dock offering the criminals an opportunity to steal. “The industry must be registered with the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) and properly regulated by the Municipality and other relevant departments to rid the town of these cell phone and laptop once off operators,” suggested the shipping line manager.

But one agent said, sometime in 2013, a client’s car was driven from the ship to the parking lot. When the agent went to collect the car it could not start and investigations showed that the computer box of the vehicle was missing. “If the car was driven from the vessel, how can the computer box be missing,” asked one of the managers of a clearing agent. She said she sympathised with the drivers who are inconvenienced by such deals that delay their departure, cost them more to repair and

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

that another Zambian national staying at the same lodge and a motor mechanic offered to fix the problem and assist him with money to cover his deficit. His colleague was also grounded while the agent was attending to documentation for undeclared goods stashed in the boot of the car which were not on the bill of lading. Two importers were recently grounded when an employee of their regular agent referred the clearing to another agent in order to get commission but the agent made an error that ended up grounding the importers for four days. Concerns have also been raised of thefts of car parts including car radios. One agent contacted for a comment confirmed the thefts adding that he was a victim. He said he imported a Mercedes Benz and was present when it was offloaded from the vessel. He noticed that the window of the vehicle was partially open. When the car was parked at the parking lot at Namport he noticed that the windows control panel was detached indicating that someone had tried to remove it. “In my case I think the attempt happened either at the port where the car was loaded or in transit because the window was already open when the vehicle was offloaded from the vessel. Remember the vessel takes about three weeks and that gives whoever is stealing the

The boom in the motor vehicle clearance industry created a window of opportunity to the bogus and briefcase companies who descended on the town but have made the clearing of vehicles a nightmare for some unsuspecting drivers lured and swindled by these briefcase clearing agents. Some of the drivers who come to collect the cars in Walvis Bay at Namport were interviewed and one Zambian national, on a first trip to pick up a car in Walvis Bay, fought back tears as he narrated his ordeals. “I have been here for four days now after the ‘agent’ called me and said the ship was arriving the following day. It did not arrive on the specified day. Meanwhile I only came with money for two nights and enough for fuel for the trip back home. These people who call themselves clearing agents are not agents at all but people who entice you with lower clearing rates, then they take the job to registered agents who are in their syndicate. I ended up using more money than if I had used registered agents. The car that I collected had no oil cap and I only realised that it was missing when I went to fill up the car,” complained the distraught man. He said the vehicle lost compression power after he unknowingly drove it without an oil cap and the oil spilled out. However he was fortunate

Women like Lahya Iyambo, Priskila Tuhadeleni, Justina Amalwa and others also tell how they and their families provided crucial support for the freedom fighters Prominent activists and freedom fighters of the first hour, including Toivo ya Toivo, Helao Shityuwete, Kambo Shixungeleni, Lazarus Zachariah, Mzee Kaukungwa, Gerson Veii, Lahya Iyambo, Nora Shimming Chase and Justina Amalwa will attend the launch on Sunday, as will Founding President, Dr. Sam Nujoma. In addition to the film’s official launch on Sunday, a public screening will be held at the University of Namibia on Friday, 1 August at 18:00 in the Peter Katjavivi Hall. This Public Screening will feature a Q&A session with the film Director, Richard Pakleppa. Copies of the DVD will be available for sale at N$150 at both events, and half the profits from all sales will go to the Robben Island Veterans Trust Fund. The film’s trailer can be viewed at: https://www. facebook.com/ PathstoFreedomFilm. Paths to Freedom cover an important period in Namibia’s history,
her path to national consciousness, and her formation. Through engaging interviews with both prominent and lesserknown agents of the struggle, Paths to Freedom tells of how Namibia’s struggle for freedom was organised – from its beginnings in labour struggle and protest, to the launch of the armed struggle at Omugulugwombashe in 1966. The 107-minute film focuses on the period 1966 to 1968, but provides important and thought provoking context to the history that framed the struggle, looking backward to the Winds of Change that swept across Africa in the 50’s and 60’s, and forward to the events that finally brought about Namibia’s independence. Using extensive archive material found in Namibia, South Africa and Germany as well as recently declassified South African Military documents, the film covers many key experiences in the formation of Namibia’s modern history up to 1966. The film contains rare interviews with struggle heroes John Nankudhu and Priskila Tuhadeleni who passed away during the course of the production. The film also contains a unique interview with Philemon Shuuya Castro who was the deputy commander of Swapo’s army in 1966 before being removed from his post in late 1967. The fascinating interviews that inform this period and beyond, are supported by a poetic visual narration and
an original soundtrack created by Hishishi Papa Shikongeni and Philip Miller. The film was produced by On Land Productions, a Namibian Section 21 Company, whose vision is to contribute to the process of nation building and democratisation by telling stories and making Namibian voices heard through the medium of film and video. The film will be launched in conjunction with the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, part of whose mandate is to keep the history of the national liberation struggle alive. Paths to Freedom was made on the basis of unique institutional partnerships between On Land Productions and the National Archive of Namibia and the Ministry of Veteran’s Affairs. The production and launch of Paths to Freedom has been made possible through the generous support of and partnerships with the Embassy of Finland, Ministry of Veterans Affairs, First National Bank of Namibia, Namibia Broadcasting Corporation, the Namibia Film Commission, the National Archives of Namibia, the Carl Schlettwein Foundation in Basle, Switzerland and investments from On Land Productions. As part of the sponsorship provided for Paths to Freedom, 1 300 copies of the DVD (with Facilitators Guides for teaching and dialogue creation purposes) will be distributed for free.

These criminals are making a clear statement; therefore it is in the interest of the public and the government of Namibia to make a clear statement back. The public is encouraged to please try to iden-
tify these three bikes and report their identification and whereabouts to the following authorities below, so that prosecution can take place. MET (Ministry of Environment Tourism) at 064-404 576, POLICE at 064-415 001 or NACOMA at 064403905.

Otis Finck
Vocalist Salvador Mouers (20) was born in Windhoek but moved to Walvis Bay at the tender age of one. The unpredictable, humble and very caring introvert, who resembles Will Smith according to his fans, wants to become a musical legend by making changes in many aspects of the world through his music. “I sing with passion and carry a message with every performance I do. I realise there are so many raw talents, and potential without purpose out there and I want to give back to my community by encouraging artists to live their dreams” he says. He writes music and does not play any instruments but is keen to learn to play the piano and guitar, which are his favourite instruments. Salvador recently signed with JB Entertainment and Artist Management Stable founded by Joe Blom. He had no formal training as a musician and started his singing career as a member of the De Duine School Choir, singing tenor. He entered the Trustco Star Performers Contest in June 2013 and made it into the “top fifty round” after he impressed the judges with his renditions of two John Legend songs, Everybody Knows and Ordinary People. He was a member of the group Contagious Africa from 2010 to 2011 and they produced a much acclaimed 15 track CD titled “Magic”. The CD was well received and enjoyed airtime at numerous Namibian radio stations. He was a vocalist in the Narraville based rap outfit Brasse vanni Mike with Ike Adonis and Jeffery Job. They produced a 7 track demo CD which contained songs such as “21 Vrae” and filmed a music video for a track titled “Coloured Hardegat”. Capricorn Radio booked the group for a weekend show and they entertained the Rehoboth community in 2013.
He also collaborated with Vernice Plaatje on “I’ll be there”. The song is their own composition and was produced with Jeffery “Big J” Job. He performs Neo Soul, Jazz, R&B and Pop music and does so because he loves doing it with every bit of his soul and wants people to recognise the talent that wanders the streets of Narraville. “My musical style is influenced by a variety of artist such as Music Soul Child, Ryan Leslie, Brain McKnight, Sade, Al Green, Teddy Pendergrass, Selaelo Selota, Ernie Smith, Jonathan Butler, John Legend, John Mayer and Michael Buble. All of them have their own unique musical style and I take specific traits such as their vocal gymnastics or stage performances from them to build my own voice. I am finding myself by doing what they do best,” he says. His favourite local artist is Sheshani and his favourite international artist is Music Soulchild’s song Today,
because of their creativity and the way their music relate to people within certain situations. “If ever accorded the opportunity I would jump to collaborate with Music Soulchild and Eric Benet because I relate to them in terms of their music” he says. Salvador credits his aunt Elizabeth De Koker as the inspirational force in his music career. “She’s been supporting me every step of the way.” He is also inspired by local success stories which do not necessarily have anything to do with music for example Salie Saban who wrote and published a book “A Place of Humble beginnings” about Walvis Bay. “I come from humble beginnings and was not born with the proverbial silver spoon. My message thus is, you do not need worldly riches to accomplish things in life and when you put your mind to something, you can achieve it depending on your commitment and your seriousness about doing so,” he says. He looks
up to David Foster, an artist he calls a true blessing to the world and who he says has been blessed with mind-blowing creativity. Foster has also been instrumental in getting the signing careers of many performers up and running. “I would like to see the Namibian music scene expanding by accommodating more genres such as Afrikaans Rap & Hip Hop,” he added. Salvador performed live on numerous occasions. His first live gig was with “Bones” the father of Leeroy and a former member of the Weekend Special Band in Swakopmund in 2009. He described it as a nerve-racking occasion. His second performance was in 2012 at the Miss Teen pageant in Walvis Bay and he has been performing at the annually hosted World Music Day event in Swakopmund. He has also improved his act considerably and gradually gained confidence with performances at school functions and funerals.
Mr Smooth, Salvador Mouers

Pupkewitz delivers latest Quon UD Trucks
The official hand-over from left: Morris Rodkins (Wesbank Transport Short Haul), Alex Visagie (UD Trucks), Jaun Nel (UD Trucks), Willem Pronk ( CEO Wesbank Transport), Marchel Heindenrich (Wesbank Transport Short Haul) and Tommy du Toit (Workshop Manager Wesbank Transport) Pupkewitz UD Trucks in Walvis Bay recently sold three brand new UD Quon trucks to Wesbank Transport. Mr Tumi Seagage (Driver Instructor from UD South Africa) especially came down to Walvis Bay to give the We s b a n k d r i v e r s hands-on lessons on the new trucks. These fuel-saving trucks will be used to distribute heavy loads throughout Namibia.

Tested & Perfected for Africa The new generation Quon is the result of years of meticulous research and development across the world. Tailor-made for African road and operating conditions, the models launched locally are the culmination of extensive customer feedback and local engineering trials. Focus areas included driveability, the transmission systems and overall economy, and after thousands of kilometres of testing, UD Trucks believes the new Quon range also adheres to stringent local requirements. Efficiency The new Quon is specifically designed to meet the transportation industry’s challenges with rising costs and a shrinking driver base by optimi-

complete range of services that will optimise uptime and fuel-efficiency by making sure each individual truck always runs in ideal conditions.
Yoshihiro Murakami, head of UD Trucks sales in Japan comments:
Increases payload To increase payload, UD Trucks has further optimised the chassis weight making the new Quon the lightest 11 liter heavy-duty truck on the Japanese market. For instance a 6×2 Quon equipped with wing-body, is now some 200 kg lighter, representing a significant capacity increase that will improve our customers’ revenue generation.
“To assist customers in achieving higher productivity, as well as to address the issue of driver shortage, UD Trucks has invested to further upgrade Quon uptime and payload and to make Quon an even safer truck that is easier to drive.” “Efficiency is not only fuel consumption, but also overall productivity. We strongly believe that a fullservice, safe truck experience is the next frontier in transportation. And with these new measures, Quon – the benchmark in Japanese heavy duty trucking –again raises the bar to a new level for the benefit of our customers.” Maximises uptime Uptime is quality time. That is why UD Trucks has put extra efforts to further optimise the quality standard of the new Quon. It is designed to run with a minimum of disturbances. In addition, with the UD Extra Mile support program, customers can rely on a
Enables safer driving The collision damage reduction function in the former “Traffic Eye Brake” system is now evolving into an Advanced Emergency Braking System, AEBS, to fully comply with the forthcoming regulations that require automatic deceleration when coming too close to another vehicle. AEBS uses high-precision radar to measure distance and relative speed versus the vehicle in front and thereby automatically warns the driver as required. Another safety feature is the new Line Departure Warning System, LDWS, which signals if the vehicle is
drifting out of lane, thereby preventing accidents. Quon –a new industry benchmark All together, these novelties and improvements focused on fuel efficiency, uptime, safety, payload and drivability demonstrates UD Trucks’ clear ambition to become the leading provider of sustainable transportation solutions on the truck market. UD Trucks is a total transport solution provider dedicated to delivering optimised total cost of ownership to its customers. It sells and serves light, medium and heavy-duty trucks as well as special vehicles. UD Trucks was established in 1935 and became part of the Volvo Group in 2007. With its headquarters located in Ageo, Japan, UD Trucks supports sales and services in more than 60 countries, including Namibia, through a worldwide network.

2014 Honda Ballade now available at Pupkewitz Motors in Swakopmund Three years after the new-generation Ballade was launched in Southern Africa, Honda Motor Southern Africa has released an all-new, secondgeneration Ballade. The 2014 Ballade ups the ante at every level: from its streamlined shape and even more spacious interior to exceptional safety standards, improved dynamics and greater efficiency. At the same time, the new-generation Ballade continues Honda’s long-established reputation for quality, longevity and reliability. The Ballade also offers an extended list of standard features across its two specification levels, many of which entrench the Honda’s class-leading status in this segment. Already Honda’s best-selling sedan in Southern Africa, this latest Ballade is expected to attract an even greater number of buyers seeking a vital mix of value, space and performance.
Engine The drivetrain of the new Ballade appears similar to that of the outgoing model, but as the statistics prove, it delivers more pep, better efficiency and lower emissions. The engine is still a 1.5litre four-cylinder unit, and the output figures have remained at 88 kW and 145 Nm respectively. Dynamics and fuel efficiency The new Ballade performs more eagerly than before, while achieving improved levels of efficiency in the process. Manual-transmission models accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 9.6 sec, which is 0.2 quicker than the outgoing model. Top speed is 185 km/h.
Styling
Safety
While the new Ballade may appear to be derived from the previous model, only 14 percent of the 2011 version’s sheet metal has actually been carried over. The newcomer has similar proportions, but is in fact slightly longer and taller. The wheelbase has been extended by more than the increase in overall length, creating a shorter front overhang, and a more spacious interior.
The new Ballade offers class-leading levels of active and passive safety. The new sedan is equipped with six airbags – front, side and curtain – as well as seat belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters. Active head restraints are standard, too. Infotainment

Hier kom Reinhardt
Harry Simon
Former World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Super and Middleweight champion Harry Simon will fight Serbian, Geard Ajetovic in a rematch scheduled for Walvis Bay early in August. Simon defeated Ajetovic in 2013 and won the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) International Light Heavyweight title by unanimous decision over 12 rounds. He was supposed to defend his title in July but did not get an opponent. He will now defend his title against Ajetovic in Walvis Bay. BoxingScene. com reports that Italian super middleweight Gio-
vanni De Carolis (21-5) is sidelined with an injury and his fight against Geard Ajetovic (25-9-1) for the vacant IBF I/C title, set for July 25 in Nepi (Italy), is postponed with a new date pending. Meanwhile, Ajetovic will travel to Namibia and Walvis Bay to again take on former WBO middleweight champion Harry Simon (29-0) on 9 August for the IBF International
light heavyweight title. Simon, who turns 40 this year, is still undefeated in 29 professional fights. Before his fight with Harry, Ajetovic boasted with a record of 23 wins, 11 by knockout, and 8 defeats. He won the vacant WBO European Super Middleweight title in April 2013 and the vacant IBF International Super Middleweight title in May.
Walvis Bay Golf Club News
Last Saturday JJ Fourie and his team sponsored yet another medal for the year. Still a few to go and you should remember that all medals count double points for the Race to Cape Town. Thirty-five players this time around. No brilliant scores were played on the first nine expect for one youngster, Marthinus Marais (pictured), playing from a 30 handicap to card a 44 for the first nine holes. Patrick Shigwele also played for the first time in six months and did not do too bad for a 4 handicapper. Starting with a 41 and finishing the second nine with par. Visitor from Heron Banks Golf Club in South Africa, Attie Nel, got a surprise with our course. Playing from 6 handicap he carded a 104. Attie, like any golfer blamed the borrowed clubs. I must say that he returned Monday morning, borrowed decent clubs and played a 77. JJ Fourie, once again did not play in his own competition. JJ, we forgive you this time. Congratulations on your son’s wedding on Saturday. An excuse we can live with. Best Gross- Patrick Shigwele – 77. Best NettMarthinus Marais – 62. Best Nett A – Division- Pieter Burger – 71. Best Nett B – Division – Desmond Benson – 69. Best Nett C –Division – Chris Bothma - 68. Most golf was won by Jonas Katti on 105. Try again! Thanks JJ with your continuous support. Next time we see you on course. Please have a look at the new fees for the year. We
will arrange for invoices during the next week or two. Please Please if you do direct payments put your name or invoice number in the description column. Do not put Walvis Bay Golf Club. We need your name otherwise we have an enormous task to allocate funds correctly. The locker fees will be charged later on. There are still people that make use of lockers and did not pay. If you want to keep your locker, please reply to this mail with your locker number and we can charge you accordingly. There will be a time, soon, that we will open the lockers and put new locks on if we do not get replies. If you make payments at the bar, make sure you get a receipt. There is a separate receipt book for the subs payments. Card payments are accepted, but please remember the fees applicable to use the facility. Also see the application form for membership. Some member documents are “lost”. If you can be so kind, please send us your personal details in order update our records. Will help us allot in the office. Let see how many reply’s we get on this one…. Other news: Gert Olivier Jnr played the Northern Open last week and triumphed over the rest of Namibia’s best. Well done on your win Gert, we are proud
Herman Smidt with Marthinus Marais
of you. Willie van Zyl sacrificed his entire Sunday to “cut” the fairways for us. He even did the rough. Thanks Willie for spending all that time behind the wheel to make our course look lovely again. Karin is building a new chipping area with a green and a practice bunker. A lot of time and effort is going in and we will inform you once the facility is open. At this stage, please keep off as we first want the grass to settle in nicely. Connie Heitmann is back in the office. Any administrative issues can be forwarded to the club e-mail and she will attend to it. Nominations for office bearers are also up. Please do not nominate wildly. Make sure the person you nominate are up for the task. Annual General Meeting on 6 August at 17:30 for 18:00. Be here. Upcoming: This Friday the Kickboxing team have their annual fundraiser. Nikov Signs on this Saturday with a bit of a different format. Pick your partner well. 2 August, Brockmann & Kriess. Make sure you are here. These are the guys from Jagermeister and be sure that something will be on promotion. 3 August – SAGES. 9 August is Club Champs - Desert Iron & Steel. 15 August the municipal fundraiser. 16 August KIT Group. Best of luck to the Sharks!
Jannie Jansen kompetisie in Pretoria by TUKS deel waar hy goud in trampolien verower het. Hy het Namibië ook verteenwoordig by die World Age Group Competition in Bulgarye waar 47 lande deelgeneem het, waardevolle ondervinding opgedoen en eerste onder die Afrika lande geëindig. Terug in Namibië moes Reinhardt gaan voorberei in Walvisbaai aangesien Windhoek nie oor ‘n dubbel mini trampolien beskik nie.
Xtrail Run Windhoek Light, together with Otb Sport and Midgard Country Lodge is hosting an Xtrail run and Mountain Bike ride in the mountains that are the source of the Swakop River. Here, high up on the farm Midgard, the first streams start which develops into the huge Swakop River. This is the first year that the run will be held in these mountains. The resort and farm is becoming a wildlife sanctuary with only the ever increasing poachers being a detriment to the bountiful game across the whole farm. Xtrail is one of the sports that show tremendous growth in the world, as people are getting to love the outdoor world and
prefer the excitement and beauty of nature rather than the pounding of the tar streets. Xtrail is not only a fitness challenge but also an opportunity to be out there in the bush on foot. Parts of the run take the participants through the Swakop River where there are herds of blue and black Wildebeest, Giraffe, Oryx, Kudu, Hartebeest and Eland. The riverbed is a birders’ paradise. There are 3 separate races. A longer challenging walk/run of 14.5km, a shorter walk/
run of approximately 8km and a Mountain Bike race of about 24km. The routes go up into the mountains with some flat sections in the river bed. Prizes worth N$14 000 in Otb sport vouchers are to be won, all sponsored by Windhoek Light. The first 160 entries get a free New Balance Event shirt. To enter, visit www.otbsport.com. For more information contact Yvonne on yvonne@ otbsport.com or 081 1429966.

A small field turned up to participate and the winning score of 37 was contested on a ‘count-out’: 1st W van Zyl, 2nd B Saunderson and 3rd E Uushona. Watch out who needs to be cut! Three 2 clubs were recorded by G Cloete, D Eksteen, and E Uushona. Well played. Sunday Swakop SAGES held their monthly competition, which was kindly sponsored by Puma Chemicals. Thanks to Franz Blaauw. By coincidence again, three players tied on 37, and another ‘count-out’ put A Abrams the winner, followed by B Saunderson and T Boesch. Tony also record-

Wednesday brought out our mid-week golfers and a small field enjoyed an overcast coolish 18 holes. No members entered the 9 hole competition this week. Mark Jacobs won on a score of 36; runner-up Troffie van der Colff (34) . Special thanks once again to CTM for their sponsorship of the prizes. Today, Friday, is a corporate Swakopmund Municipal Golf Day, with just over 20 teams participating in a 3

ball Alliance competition. Proceeds will be used to send our Municipal Sports team to the South African Municipal games, this year being held in East London. Saturday is Rossmund’s Monthly Medal, where members go out to ‘feesh’ for the great prizes so regularly and generously sponsored by Novanam; thanks for your ongoing support. Did you know? In 1860, the first British open was played in Prestwick, Scotland, and Scotland boasts the world’s oldest golf course, St Andrews, used as early as the 16th Century.

Langer Heinrich Uranium (LHU) Blue Waters chairperson Hafeni Ndemula announced that their star striker and current Namibian Premier League top marksman Hendrik Somaeb (22) signed with Free State Stars. Ndemula made the announcement at a press briefing on Tuesday. Somaeb captained Blue Waters, scored 22 goals in the recently concluded campaign and will join fellow compatriots Rudolph Bester (formerly from Arrows) and Da Costa Angula (formerly from Black Africa) at the South African based Premier League team. On Sunday, in Bethlehem in the Free State, he put pen to paper following a one month trial stint. Hedrick said he is happy with the deal offered to him by the South African outfit and shared the good news with his mother first. “Training is tougher and the competition in South Africa is more intense. I am looking forward to work hard in order to clinch an improved deal within the near future” he commented. He donated N$5 000 to Narraville Primary School and De Duine Secondary School each and N$50 000 from his signing fee to Blue Waters before he left for South Africa. He joined his new team on Wednesday to prepare for the new season that will start on Friday, 8 August. Free State Stars will take on Kaizer Chiefs in their season opener. Current Blue Waters coach, Paulus Shipanga recommended Somaeb to Free State Stars which plays in the South African Premier Soccer League. Someab signed w i t h the club which was founded in 1977 in a small village in an area then known as
QwaQwa. The club gained promotion to the National Premier Soccer League in 1986 and is currently coached by Belgium national Tom Saintfiet. The club finished 14th in the 2013/2014 season. Its previous honours include being crowned Baymed Cup Winners 2006, Mvela Golden League Champions 2004-05 and 2006-07, Second Division Champions 1985 and CocaCola Cup Winners 1994. Ndemula hailed Somaeb’s feat as a joyous occasion for the Namibian sport fraternity and his former club. “We are truly champions when it comes to providing quality players and achieved this through hard work and dedication. We produced the likes of Ranga Lukas and Riva Ekonja in the 1970’s, Sandro de Gouveia, Koko Muatunga, Armando Pedro, Paulus Shipanga, Zico Paulus and Ronnie Kanalelo in the 1980’s,” said Ndemula. He also paid tribute to Langer Heinrich Uranium for standing by the club as a sponsor and supporting the development of young players. Ninety percent of the current crop of Blue Waters players is younger than 25 years. An emotional Sandro de Gouveia (Blue Waters Treasurer) who had been involved in the development of Somaeb from the age of 12, said that the club was a vehicle for many players and helps them grow by changing their attitudes. “Somaeb proved that hard work cultivates hope and can make dreams
come true. LHU did not only availed monetary support but installed vital requirements at Blue Waters such as being financially accountable and thus ensured that we will continue to create better individuals.” LHU Corporate Relations Manager Ratonda Murangi-Katjivikua commented that the company was honoured to be associated with the team and a player of Somaeb’s stature. “Through our partnership with Blue Waters we sponsored the development of four players over the past six years and believe that Somaeb’s achievement will encourage others to follow in his footsteps,” she said. Walvis Bay Municipal Sport Officer Daniel Mouton said that he was overwhelmed by the announcement and that Somaeb’s achievement proves that proper development will produce proper players. Somaeb started his soccer career
by playing street soccer in the dusty salt streets of Kuisebmond. He played for NPS and De Duine and was roped in by De Gouveia and Mouton as a member of their DDD Soccer Academy at the age of 12. Under their mentorship he was chosen to represent Namibia on two occasions in Christiansand, Norway. Mouton recounted how he followed Somaeb from the first day he set eyes on him and how he allowed Somaeb to play at u/17 level at the age of 13. He concluded by thanking Blue Waters for believing in Somaeb. De Gouviea shared how he convinced coach Lucky Shipanga to introduce the young hard running and exceptionally quick Somaeb in the second half against African Stars in 2009 for his first premier league match. The player went on to become the National u/17 squad captain and also played for the u/20 side.
