Domestic violence charges cannot be withdrawn at police station anymore Staff Reporter
Victims of domestic abuse at the coast will no longer be allowed to withdraw charges of domestic violence at the police charge office as before, but will have to appeal to the Magistrate’s Court.

The move was announced by Commissioner Samuel //Hoëbeb, the Erongo Regional Commander of the Namibian Police, during a public information meeting held in the DRC, Swakopmund on Saturday. //Hoëbeb said the latest move is an attempt to
curb the spate of passion killings in the country and reduce instances of domestic violence in the region. For the year to date eight instances of domestic violence and 27 cases of common assault were reported to the Mondesa
Police, he said, but the commissioner noted that he is disturbed by the frequency with which domestic violence charges are withdrawn, noting that in some cases people, who have been repeatedly subjected to such abuse, tended to withdraw the
charges many times. Commissioner //Hoëbeb wanted to know how we are going to reduce gender-based violence and passion killings if the charges are constantly being withdrawn? He said that Nampol has already arranged with all
local magistrates to transfer the handling of any withdrawals of domestic violence charges to the courts and confirmed that “this will no longer be done by the police.” “In general, I discourage the withdrawal of domestic violence cases or any

Sign Language course held in Swakopmund Anri Jacobs
Last week The Disability Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister organised a sign language course which trained people from various professions. Some of those who will be involved in the overall training include Police officers, journalists and soldiers. Last week they also invited the ministry of information and communication technology (MICT) to be part of this training. We spoke to one of the information officers to get first-hand experience from her regarding the course. Ms Paulina Moses is the MICT information officer of the Erongo regional office, and due to her position it was deemed imperative that she attend. Paulina said that as an information officer she
came into contact with different members of the community on a daily basis. One of her roles is to disseminate information with regard to government information as well as conduct campaigns. She added, “With this training I will be able to communicate with members of the community who are hearing impaired, meaning that they too will receive the necessary information that we disseminate.” For Paulina this is an important skill to have in her line of work and shares that she is of course not a pro yet, however she
will continue to do more advanced sign language courses in the future. She explained that sign language helps to bridge the gap between those who can hear and those who cannot. She continued saying, “My oldest sister was the first sign language interpreter on NBC and so I grew up amongst many hearing impaired people and because of that I know how valuable they are to society and how important it is that we all learn sign language.” According to Juliana Uukongo from the Disability Unit of the Office of
the Prime Minister they see great importance in sign language training for everyone. She shared, “The purpose of this training is to acquaint as many people as possible, who are in various areas which require interaction many times with the general society, with the basic sign language communication skills. It is also part of our disability mainstreaming programme to bring our people with hearing impairment into the national mainstream by enabling them to communicate with people working in various professions.”

New mines Women running for will create Political Office 3 000 jobs Anri Jacobs
“My rights as a woman and Namibian citizen! Gender and Human Rights awareness raising for Namibian citizen” workshop was held in Swakopmund from 26 to 27 June.
The Chamber of Mines believes that the vast number of people who lost their jobs in recent months can be absorbed into the new mines currently under development throughout the country. The mining industry, in particular uranium, experienced a number of setbacks and major job losses over the past year, but Mr Veston Malangu, the CEO of the Chamber is optimistic that the lob losses can be countered by the new mines coming into operation. Malangu told Bloomberg on Wednesday that he expects a large number of workers who lost their jobs in the downturn to find employment on the new mines currently being constructed by China Guangong Nuclear Group at Husab, B2Gold in northern Namibia, as well as Weatherly’s Tschudi copper mine. More than 500 workers were retrenched from Rossing Uranium Mines over the past two years, while a further 400 gar-
ment workers found themselves out on the street earlier this year, when the textile factory at Arandis lost its main contract and had to stop production. In the south the Glencore-owned zinc and lead mine at Rosh Pinah also shed 124 jobs in June, adding to the already severe unemployment problem in the country. “We know the workers are skilled and experienced and the three new investments will create more than 3 000 new permanent jobs; they should be able to absorb them,” Veston Malangu said. Malango said that Husab alone would hire more than 2 000 permanent staff members by the time it reaches full production in 2017, while around 600 would be needed at the gold mine, which is due

Several hundred people had come to listen to the commissioner make his first public address to the residents of the DRC. //Hoëbeb cautioned the people to avoid drinking in public, as they could be fined up to N$300 and went on to address a number of crime-related concerns in the area. “What examples are we setting for the children?”

to go into operation by the end of 2014. Weatherly will likely employ around 500 by the time it goes into full production in 2015. “The big challenge is experienced engineers who can take up managerial and other highly technical positions in the entire mining chain,” Malango said. “We have enough artisans coming from local colleges and that area is fairly covered. When it comes to experience in areas such as engineering, mining companies are struggling to get the skills,” Malangu was reported as saying. The report also noted that Namibia’s mining industry provided employment to 7 582 permanent and 909 temporary workers, as well as 8 218 contractors in 2013.
The workshop was held under the theme, “Women running for Political Office,” as a part of the Woman’s Action for Development (WAD) project. It is a well known fact that the perception still exists in the Namibian society, that men in general are far more advanced than women in terms of levels of academic achievement, knowledge of their rights and knowledge of the functioning of State mechanisms even 24 years after Namibia’s Independence. This perception inevitably led, in the past and still to a large extent today, to a very unequal representation of the genders in job placements in the higher echelons of national and business activities, with women constituting the minority, notwithstand-
ing their majority in the country’s population. Various laws saw the light of day, aiming at the protection of women and opening the door, in theory, to their unbiased participation in all areas of human endeavour in our national household. However, two decades after the adoption of the Namibian Constitution and several laws which aim at equalising the playing field for women in Namibia, gross unequal participation of women is still the order of the day, including their representation in the two Houses of Parliament. The Delegation of the European Union to Namibia has approved extensive funding towards the project: “My rights as a woman and Namibian citizen! Gender and Human Rights aware-

he asked, referring to people who walk around in public drinking liquor as if it were perfectly acceptable. It is a well known fact that alcohol is a key factor in the escalation of violent crimes and alcohol is often linked to cases of domestic abuse and violence against women and children. “It is immoral, to walk around in public drinking liquor,” he said. Commissioner //Hoëbeb
also warned against the handling of explosive weapons and ammunition. Several cases were reported in recent months of local residents hoarding unexploded ordinances on their properties and in some cases in their homes. Several unexploded ordinances were also found abandoned at different places, such as the municipal rubbish dump. The commissioner advised residents not to touch live
ammunition, but to leave it where it is. //Hoëbeb emphasised that people should not try and handle these weapons, or even to try to take them to the police, but rather to leave any ordinances and ammunition right where they found them, and to report the matter to the police as soon as possible. Before the meeting concluded, there was also a general discussion and demonstration of basic
firefighting techniques. Countless fires have destroyed the homes and lives of many people in the area in recent years and residents were advised to contact the fire department if they do detect any fire that is out of control. The regional police chief further cautioned the residents against buying stolen goods and hiding known criminals in their homes.

ness-raising for Namibian citizens”, which will be implemented over a period of three years and which seeks to contribute to a gender sensitive Namibian society where human rights are protected and women enjoy equal opportunities without fear of discrimination, marginalisation or harassment. Through this project, aspirant women politicians will be trained to equip them with the necessary skills to ensure that they are included on party lists for elections and to assist women to prepare adequately to fulfil a meaningful public role. Political decision-makers will also be sensitised on women’s involvement in politics. A very important point that was made regards gender equality as one of the key players linked
to sustainable development and which is also vital to the realisation of human rights for all. The overall objective being a society where women and men enjoy the same opportunities, rights and obligations in all spheres of life. These all play a massive role in allowing women to run for office. Preparing for political office is not a task to be taken on lightly and the key factors thereof were discussed at the workshop. The workshop formed one of many to come, covering various important topics and being a part of a large scale project to empower and educate women. These aspirant women walked away knowing more about running for office, and having the necessary skills to be involved in politics.

This photos were taken recently by Marshallino Beukes (Namib Times) in Vrede Rede Street in Tamariskia. The situation is not conducive to the image of the town and the suburb at all. It appears as if the area serves as a rubbish dump for a certain business.
Vandals sprayed graffiti inscriptions onto the back of the “Welcome to Walvis Bay” sign situated at the entrance of the town recently. The namib times alerted the Municipality about this after a reader took photos and provided it to the newspaper. The sign was constructed in 1998 at a cost of N$98 960.45. It has been the target of vandalism before but unfortunately the culprits have never been caught. “Hopefully, with greater public vigilance and cooperation, vandals can be reported to the relevant authorities and made to suffer the consequences of their acts. This will go a long way in reducing expenditure on maintaining public infrastructure,” said Mr Kevin Adams, Manager: Public Relations & Customer Service. The sign has been repainted in the meantime.
A mysterious pool of water which gathered at the four way stop at Probst Bakery last week caused for much curiosity by motorists and passersby as it seemed that the water suddenly appeared from nowhere. A spokesperson of the Municipality of Walvis Bay confirmed that the water discharge was from a fire hydrant which had been knocked over by a careless motorist. The hydrant has since been fixed. Youth must take bull by the horns – Kambueshe Marshallino Beukes
A Regional Cluster Workshop on Youth leadership was yesterday officially opened by Swakopmund mayor, Juuso Kambueshe and he encouraged the youth to tackle hitches, which might cross their paths, valiantly. This workshop is orchestrated by the National Youth Council and the Ministry of Youth. Participants from the Omaheke, Kunene and Erongo Regions were targeted and 10 representatives from each region will undergo training. The mayor further expressed his concern about youth growing up next to shebeens, with the mentality that it's “normal”. This, according to Kambueshe, should change, as residential areas are supposed to have playgrounds and parks for youngsters to safely

The Social Security Commission (SSC) Development Fund is supporting the Southern Cross Human Capital Management (HCM) Centre with a grant to train 148 unemployed Namibians in Food and Beverages preparation as well as Culinary Arts. Maureen Hinda-Mbaziira of Southern Cross Human Capital Management Centre: “Social Security is filling a very crucial gap of skills training and youth unemployment and with very significant valuable impact addressing basic social need/challenge at the bottom line of society and most importantly in the most needed areas. It should continue doing good for the ordinary young person on the street and the broader Namibian society.” Rino Muranda, Head of Corporate Communications at the SSC said that the Development Fund aims at conducting training schemes and employment schemes, approved by the President of the Republic of Namibia, for the benefit of socioeconomically disadvantaged people who are unemployed. “Further we grant bursaries, loans and other forms of financial aid to students enrolled at any recognised technical or academic institutions of higher education.” The grant has enabled the Southern Cross HCM Centre to take youths from the street and empower them with skills in the Hospitality Industry that
enhance their employability. Some of the trainees from the first group who completed their course are successfully employed, mainly at food outlets and Shoprite at the new Mall in Keetmanshoop.
The current group of 20 students has placement already at some Lodges for internship and possible full-time employment based on performance during internship and vacancies. Maureen: “We are halfway
through the training and are looking forward to completing it by December 2014, as demand for training is very high but due to poverty people are unable to pay for much needed training.”

central government wants to retain full ownership. Namcor said last week that the tender specifications include the design, engineering and construction of an oil tanker jetty, a buffer pump station, petroleum pipelines and the crucial 75 million litre oil storage facility. Mr Obeth Kandjoze, the MD of Namcor, explained last week that the risks to the economy, of a reduced or suspended supply of fuel are obvious. He noted that for a country like Namibia, which is a net importer of fuel (and a ‘price-taking country’, as opposed to a price-setting country), building the internal bulk storage capacity to store at least 30 days’ worth of reserve fuel is considered good practice by international standards. Highly industrialised countries such as China and the USA tend to store at least 6 months

“Namibia is not an oil-producing country, but we have to keep on looking until we find oil, because that will help us a great deal if we can find oil and refine our own oil, rather than keep on importing fuel from other countries,” the chairman of the parliamentary committee on energy security, Mr Ben Amathila said on Friday. Speaking to reporters in Windhoek, Amadhila said that chronic oil imports represent a major drain on Namibia’s foreign currency reserves. “I fully agree that it is a bit of a risk to have all our fuel in Walvis Bay at one spot. So decentralisation would possibly come in very handy”, but that would come at a significant cost, Amathila said. “It will cost a lot of money, which NamCor may not have.” Namcor will manage the new storage facility, but

The Namibia Petroleum Corporation (Namcor) announced last week that the massive N$4 billion tender for the construction of a bulk fuel storage facility near the harbour was awarded to a joint venture company that includes the Roads Contractor Company (RCC) and China Harbour Construction Engineering Company. With the constant rise in fuel prices and an ever-increasing number of vehicles on the country’s roads the need for a secure fuel supply has become more pronounced in recent years. At present the country has the capacity to store 15 days of the national fuel requirement. The fluctuation of oil prices on the international market is considered one of the main reasons that the government decided to move ahead with establishing a strategic fuel storage facility at the coast.
WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Cancer Conference coming to Namibia Anri Jacobs
The eighth Cervical, Breast and Prostate Cancer in Africa Conference (SCCA) is taking place in Windhoek, Namibia from 20 to 22 July 2014. The conference is being co-hosted by the Office of the First Lady of the Republic of Namibia, with the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) in collaboration with various key partners and will be held at the Safari Hotel and Conference Centre, Windhoek, Namibia. The burden of reproductive system cancers has been increasing in many developing countries. Breast cancer is the commonest cancer affecting women and has been shown to be more aggressive in developing countries than in high- income countries. In Namibia the breast cancer numbers are staggeringly high. In 2011 alone the breast cancer numbers amongst men where 5 new cases and in females, the number is 291 new cases. Cervical cancer is the second leading cancer among women in many countries and has been closely associated with the human Papilloma virus infection, a virus which has been reported to be highly prevalent in many countries. In 2010 the total number of cases of Cervical cancer according to the Cancer Association of Namibia came to 234 cases and in 2011 the total number of cases were 185. Globally, 270 000 women die due to cervical cancer and 530 000 new cases of cervical cancer are reported every year. Prostate cancer, endometrial and- ovarian cancers are other reproductive system cancers that have been shown to be on the increase in many settings. There is need for an increase in awareness and education about cancer, and Health Ministries across Africa have placed attention to prevention, treatment and palliation of cancers. Through its Annual Stop Cervical Cancer in Africa Conference and Global Summit on Women Cancers in Africa, the foundation has brought both regional and international attention to cancer and its burden on Africa. The Forum of African First Ladies against Breast and Cervical Cancer initiated by Princess Nikky Onyeri, which was established in 2007 with 15 African First Ladies, has created awareness about cancer in the region. African Parliamentarians and Health Ministers
against Cancer, which was launched in 2010 has also lent their support to issues of cancer across Africa. Cancer Action Plans, mainly for breast, prostate and cervical cancer, are being drawn up by African Governments and Health Ministers for their countries. We spoke to Mr Samuel /Gôagoseb who is the Permanent Secretary at the Office of the President who is also the chairperson of th the Task Force for 8 Stop Cervical, Breast and Prostate Cancer in Africa Conference (8th SCCA). He shared more insights on why the conference will be held in Namibia this year. He said that the conference is an annual event hosted by the African Countries on a rotational basis and under the patronage of the respective First Lady of the hosting country. The first conference was held in Abuja, Nigeria in 2007, followed by six more from 2008 up to 2013, hosted by Uganda, South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia, Zambia and Mozambique respectively. He added that it was during the 7th Stop Cervical Can-
cer in Africa Conference in Maputo, Mozambique that the Republic of Namibia was chosen to host the th 8 Conference this year, scheduled for 20 – 22 July, under the patronage of Madame Penehupifo Pohamba. Mr Samuel /Gôagoseb continued saying, “This, to a large extend, is contributable to the excellent work our First Lady has done as President of the Organisation of African First Ladies against HIV&AIDS (OAFLA) and as Ambassador of Peace and indeed due to her commitment to her charity work in Namibia.” The main drive behind the conference according to Mr /Gôagoseb is to take stock of the gains made through collective efforts by the public and private sectors, health professionals, academia and other relevant stake holders on the subject of cancer in terms of prevention, diagnoses, treatment, care, awareness and education. In addition, it aims to effectively chart the way forward in terms of developing national cancer prevention, treatment and care strategies for par-
ticipating countries. The conference is also aiming to seek high level political commitment and support against cancer which will greatly assist us all in finding holistic approaches and therefore effective solutions, not only as a country but as continent as a whole. Mr /Gôagoseb further shared, “As a result, the conference will be attended by African First Ladies, Health Ministers, Speakers of Parliaments and a broad range of stakeholders from high level policy makers across diverse sectors ranging from civil society and development partners to affected and interested target groups.” When asked why the conference is important the office of the President and to the office of the first lady, Mr /Gôagoseb explained, “It is important because as a country, Namibia stands to gain knowledge transfer from the discourse on new developments within the cancer prevention sphere from around the world.” He continued, “Furthermore, Namibia will show case as a c o u n t r y, w h o s e Government is committed to the well-being of its people and hence it has created a peaceful and democratic society that is wo r th e m ul a t i n g .” Overall the goal of the conference is to discuss matters of cancer of the
reproductive system in order to contribute to the development of strategic actions that will help in the reduction of these cancers. The conference will interrogate the status of cancer in the context of sexual and reproductive health and rights in Africa in particular with the focus on girls, adolescents, youth, women and men of the reproductive age. This is especially vital in view of the challenges health professionals are faced with on a daily basis which include; late presentation and therefore poor treatment outcome; low levels of knowledge about reproductive cancers at community levels; fear and stigma associated with finding out one has cancer; lack of a holistic control programme in the country at all levels from workplace to community
level. Mr /Gôagoseb added, “We are also hopeful that the conference will seek high level political commitment and support against cancer which will greatly assist us all in finding holistic approaches and therefore effective solutions, not only as a country but as a continent.” According to Mr /Gôagoseb the Conference is expected to be highly interactive. The conference presentations, papers and posters will explore the conference theme and the subthemes. Video show, group discussions, case studies, and experience sharing will also be utilized. Recommendations adopted, shall reposition the African continent in addressing challenges with regard to cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, referral and care. Registration is free and
open for interested and affected persons from the public. Stalls for exhibitions are available. Dogs terrorise Narraville Community According to a resident of Narraville, a group of violent dogs (belonging to the same person) are roaming the streets of the suburb and are scaring the residents of the community into isolation. Owner responds To the lady whose tyre was deflated while parked in the street?
Thanks so much for the photograph you provided of the deflated tyre with interlocks underneath. As far as I know there are no roads in Walvis Bay with interlocks. The photo of the Private Property and customer parking only sign was a nice touch. The only thing you failed to photograph were the red poles planted on the border of the
property which demarcates the parking area. We moved our shop to this location because it provides parking for our customers. We have to employ a security guard to try and keep the parking open for our own customers. He will ask politely that they remove their vehicle and explain why, but that has often
resulted in verbal abuse and on one occasion in December last year the threat of physical violence. To the people who park here illegally. If you respect the property of others they will hopefully respect yours. Paul Loetscher Apex Motor Spares
Swakopmund
Residents Association Newsletter No. 34, June 2014
Thank you Swakopmund Municipality for reacting to our request of last month’s newsletter and having the amphitheatre and surrounds cleaned. We hoped this will be done on a regular basis from now on. A nasty accident happened recently in the right hand turn of Moses Garoeb Street into Rhode Alee, costing a senior citizen his life. This is a sharp downhill bend and calls for the erection of speed bumps to avoid further tragedy. The Swakopmund Municipal Sports Club likes to travel and compete in events elsewhere, this costs money and our council is very generous in supporting these events financially. After the financial disaster of the SAIMSA Games held locally during September last year and costing the taxpayer N$1 111 563.84 council at the June meeting approved another N$50 000 on top of the annual grant of N$100 000 in favour of the Sports Club. The strong objection of Cllr V Steinkopff of the SRA could however not prevent this decision from being accepted. This year’s SAIMSA games will be held at East London with our local Sports Club participating. The above mentioned finances are available for the event and any amount exceeding will have to be raised by the participants. Who will cover the shortfall? The Swakopmund Chamber of Commerce (NCCI) intends holding a Business Expo from 9 – 11 October 2014 in the area surrounding the Swakopmund Indoor Sports Centre. This
event is generously supported by council, we fully agree with the decision. During the June end council meeting Mayor J Kambueshe again referred to the interest the Swakopmund Residents Association is taking in council procedures and welcomed the positive criticism which we are expressing in our newsletters, calling on other organisations to follow suit.. The dubious transaction of Erf 3486 in favour of Swapo party has been defended by our Mayor. His argument is that any political party could apply for land of similar value to erect their offices, This is a very weak excuse as the mayor himself should know that most other political parties are experiencing financial problems to run their administration especially now during election time, not everyone has unlimited access to government funds. The socalled updated property policy is definitely not in favour of the residents of this town. The Swakopmund Residents Association wants to again stress very strongly that we are not against Swapo Party purchasing a piece of ground for their own purposes, but we can not agree to a socalled sale of an erf which had a market value of N$2 million plus and through manipulation and rezoning was valued down to N$30 000,
to suit the party which is represented in council by a majority. This is a blatant and obvious tactic and no-one is fooled by it. The interests of the town and all inhabitants should be above political party interests. In this one issue your association has informed you about the waste of serious municipal (our) funds for sporting purposes, and the dubious method of rezoning land specifically to be bought cheaply by the Swapo party. Residents of Swakopmund, irrespective of colour or creed, we need to stand together to be able to prevent this type of abuse. What is today a small pebble, will in time become a landslide if we turn away in apathy. We do not want steadily to fall into bankruptcy like so many other badly managed towns in Namibia. During the past week gangsters have been active again and broke into a car whilst the tourists were climbing the dunes along the road to Walvis Bay, a laptop, cash money and travelling documents amongst others were stolen, a very nasty event. Our mayor who continuously stresses the importance of tourism will not be happy to hear about this. Please warn any tourist you know of intending to go dune-climbing of the danger.

MUCH APPRECIATED
South African based Children Evangelist Debbie Viljoen from Jesus Buddies Ministries visited Narraville Primary School (NPS) last Thursday and presented a session to the learners. She treated the learners to a video titled “Being a soldier for Jesus” and they sang faith based choirs. The video show with “God never lets you down” as theme had the children in stitches. Viljoen who visited the school for a third time encouraged the learners not to give up despite circumstances and said that it was always a pleasure to visit NPS. Viljoen visited various schools in the Erongo region and conducted a disciple ship course for 240 learners at JP Brand School. The participating learners received certificates upon completion of the course which lasted three days. Teacher Rencs also handed over 10 boxes with approximately 1 000 pairs of shoes to pastor Patrick Britz. The shoes were collected from students when the school hosted a “footloose day” last week. Pastor Britz and members of his ministry plan to visit the Kavango region in August to conduct mission work and will then distribute the shoes to learners in need of it.

Helniq reaches out Anri Jacobs
Last year December Helniq Bezuidenhoudt won N$100 000 at the ProEd treasure hunt and it is at that moment she decided she would follow her lifelong dream and use the money to help those in need. Helniq already has great plans for various projects and upcoming events during the year. This 18 year old inspirational lady came to us with her story to share with the community and create awareness regarding various projects she will be taking on. The first big event that Helniq is organising all by herself will be the Miss CHAIN beauty pageant. This will be held on 30 August in Swakopmund with the venue to be confirmed. CHAIN is the Children Handicap Action in Namibia association and is there for all the handicapped and those in need. All proceeds will go to them. Helniq has a great love for music dancing and modelling, and hopes to inspire and educate other young girls in
the modelling industry, starting with the Miss CHAIN pa-geant. Before the CHAIN pageant, Helniq will be hosting a fun day in Walvis Bay which will be filled with lots of fun activities for the whole family. Some of the exciting things to look forward to include various stalls to browse through, braais, cake and coffee, jumping castles and much more. Apart from doing all of this, Helniq also plays an active role in the Tamariskia Primary School’s community, where she was a student herself and attended Mrs Rose’s class in Grade two. Last week we spoke about the traditional dances that Mrs Rose teaches the students of Tamariskia Primary School as a part of the their life skills subject which forms a part of
their school curriculum. Helniq helps Mrs Rose to present these traditional dancing classes to the students. She will also towards the end of the month, donate stationary and a few other school essentials to the students of Tamariskia Primary, as part of her giving back to the community of Swakopmund. Helniq shared that helping others and doing charity work is above all her greatest passion in life. She is beyond ecstatic when she can help other people and organise beauty pageants and charity events. Helniq hopes, through all of these events that she will be hosting, to catch the eye of bigger institutions in the hope of allowing her to be part of greater projects. Her greatest dream of all is to register her

This week I want to share with you some simple yet amazing tips I found that will change your photography forever and allow for some new creativity to flow into your life and work. Sometimes it’s the lit- subject and will give how to work with light, Sometimes when we plan tle things in life that new perspective to you will also find that too much for a shoot we make the difference, your work. Get up close and then get even closer When shooting, try to leave out unnecessary objects from your frame, including too much into your shot will create chaos and your viewer will get lost in all that there is to see. Except of course if this is what you want to do. Don’t overanalyse

We only learn through our mistakes in life and so also in our photography. Experiment and try and try again. Go back to a shoot you have already done, redo it and see how Light, Light, Light much you have improved.

‘Express from us’ on M-Net! In a bold move that cements its reputation as Africa’s prime pay-television content provider, M-Net is closing the time-gap between the international debut of top-rated series like never before. With the revolutionary ‘Express from the US’ viewing experience, MNet series fans will now be able to enjoy some of their favourite shows within 24-hours of its American broadcast. The first must-see show that will receive the ‘Express from the US’ treatment is the powerful drama Ray Donovan, while the popular LA fixer (Ray Donovan) will return to US screens for the second season in their prime-time slot on Sunday, 13 July. The very same episode will premiere on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) on Monday, 14 July at 03:00 Namibia Winter Time – a mere hour later, considering the time difference between the two continents. In the past, DStv subscribers have had delayed broadcasts, thus having an
international series within 24 hours is a first. That’s not all! In another first, directly after this episode has aired on M-Net (DStv Channel 101), it will be available on the DStv Explora Catch-Up menu. This means that DStv subscribers with an Explora decoder can watch it whenever they choose to before it is screened in its dedicated prime-time evening time-slot on the M-Net schedule. In the case of Ray Donovan, this will be on Tuesday, 15 July at 20:30 Namibian Winter Time. With ‘Express from the US’ you can now catch Ray Donovan in the following ways. On M-Net (DStv channel 101), at 03:00 Namibian Winter Time in the morning on Mondays, straight after its world premiere ~ Epi-

Ray Donovan directly afterwards. The first episode will be this Tuesday, 15 July at 20:30 Namibian Winter Time. Because of the

López wins “PX3” Paris photo prizes
Spanish photographer José Nanuel López has won prizes in three news categories in the PX3 Paris Photo awards for his coverage of the massacre of young men in the Syrian civil war. His shocking images of bodies pulled out of the Quweig River in Aleppo earned him a gold medal in the category “PressGeneral News,” a silver medal in the “PressWar” and third place in the overall “PX3 Paris Photography Prize.
The bodies of 68 young men dressed in civilian clothes were fished out of the Quweig River in a rebel controlled area of Aleppo on January 29 2013. Their hands had been tied behind their backs and they had been executed
by a bullet to the head or neck. Six weeks later, another 30 bodies were found in the same location, executed the same way. José Manuel López is a freelance Spanish journalist focused on social conflicts and injustice. He
studied at the school of arts in Ovied, Spain, and worked for 11 years as a staff photographer at his local paper, La Crónica de Leon, until 2009. He has covered Afghanistan, Iraq, the Palestinian territories, Iran, Haiti, Kosovo, Guatemala and
Venezuela, and covered the Syria conflict for AFP from the side of the rebels. His images have appeared in international media including The New York Times, The Guardian, Le Monde, El País, Der Spiegel and L’Espresso.
The “Px3“ Paris photograph awards were created in 2007 and its jury is comprised of respected media professionals. Two of the award winning images will be published in the annual Px3 book and will be displayed in a travelling exhibition which
opens in the Beaurepaire gallery in Paris on July 15. The photos can be viewed at http://www. px3.fr/winners/zoom2. php?eid=1-41336 14&uid=3244088& cat=Press. Warning - this link contains disturbing images.

Junior EXCO for FNB
From left: Line Shitemba, Raymond Gariseb, Reinette Vermeulen, Cynthia Mariine, Angelique Peake and Charmaine Mberira.
FNB Namibia recently appointed a Junior Executive Committee (EXCO), made up of young employees of the bank who were chosen by their peers from all business units and branches. They are Angelique Peake (Chairperson), Linea Shitemba (Secretariat), Desderius Afunde, Raymond Gariseb, Charmaine Mberira, Cynthia Mariine, Lavinia Shikongo, Reinette Vermeulen, Zico Maasdorp and Sydney Tjipuka. Criteria for nomination had been the fact that members should be 35 years of age or younger, from a variety of branches and business units, gender balanced and top performers with strong leadership skills. Ian Leyenaar, CEO of FNB Namibia: “The Junior Exco will report to our bank’s Senior Exco and is not part of the
FNB Group Exco team. Membership of the Junior Exco will create an opportunity to develop future leaders who can aspire to senior leadership positions in our great bank. They will also look at specific projects such as our innovations initiative, staff engagement initiatives, process improvements, social events, mentoring and training, values enhancements and much more. I congratulate our youngsters and wish them well for the next two years. I am sure that they will greatly enhance our business and add value with new
and improved ideas.” The Junior Exco is, amongst others, furthermore responsible for monitoring and making proposals for the more effective implementation of the four pillars of FNB’s strategy focusing on service as the unique selling proposition. Leyenaar: “Our Junior Exco will also be an ear and a voice for our employees and will bring any issues to EXCO and together we will find ways of resolving employee issues.” Angelique Peake, Chairperson of the Junior Exco added and said: “We stand next to
senior management and EXCO looking at the FNB employees of all ranks and ages, to tell us what they want addressed at senior level. We aim to represent our peers on matters that need to be focused on and take on projects to lift our staff engagement to exciting levels. We also strive to bring better communication, information and processes to colleagues by getting involved in numerous projects. All in all we embark on new projects together with everyone to create an environment where FNB will remain an employer of First Choice.”

Top bowlers rewarded The Namibian Bowling Association (NBA) has rewarded the year’s top performers last weekend at the Eros Bowls Club (EBC) in Windhoek. The award ceremony was held after the final matchday of this year’s National League, giving the cream of the crop one last opportunity to showcase their skills one last time before receiving their sought-after prices. The “Team of the Year” Award went to the men’s national squad that secured the second overall place at the African States Tournament (AST)
on home soil last year. The team members Jean Viljoen, Ewald Vermeulen, Willem “Will” Esterhuizen, Axel Krähenbühl and Graham Snyman put up a great fight throughout the different playing categories, but the latter winners, South Africa, proved too tough a nut to crack. The Namibians did however qualify for the Commonwealth Games scheduled

to take place in the Scottish capital Glasgow later this month. Thanks to his exceptional performances, not only at the AST but also for his club (TransNamib), Will Esterhuizen was crowned the “Men’s Bowler of the year”. The other nominees were Axel Krahenbuhl and Steven Peake. Another outstanding performer of the year was Sheena du Toit, who was rightly rewarded with the “Female Bowler of the year” award. Du Toit beat the likes of Diana Viljoen, Anjuleen Viljoen and Roelien Stander to the price. Anjuleen Viljoen, forming part of this year’s winning TransNamib ladies team, was recognised as the “Most Promising Player” of the year after also earning her first cap for Namibia. During the selection process Viljoen suffered stiff competition in players such as Jacques Bruwer, Axel Krahenbuhl, Carel ‘Cabous’ Olivier, Melisa Bruwer, Amanda Steenkamp, Elna Esterhuizen and Mandie Steenkamp, but the her bright looking future is undeniable and the votes for her came flocking in. Meanwhile Ekkie Gaertner and Erna Mueller shared the “NBA Sportsmanship” award, while Alexander ‘Sandy’ Joubert and Tollie Cronje received certificates of appreciation for their hard work throughout the year.
Substitute Mario Goetze won Germany their fourth World Cup with a late, late goal in extra-time to beat Argentina in Rio de Janeiro. Goetze, who had been a late substitute in this game himself, took a ball over his shoulder from Andre
Schurrle and volleyed it home in the 113th minute to beat Argentine keeper Sergio Romero. With the win, Germany became the first European team to win a South American World Cup, ending a spell that had stood for 84 years. It was also the 3rd time that

the Germans had ended Argentina’s World Cup hopes and possibly the cruelest. But just as the best two teams at this World Cup ended up in the final, the best team won it. Hosts, Brazil, disappointed once again, losing their
3rd place play-off match against the Netherlands 3-0, on Saturday. For the Samba Boys it’s back to the drawing board and hopefully bounce back, silencing their critics. Russia will host the next FIFA World Cup in 2018.

Sidney Martin will destroy Namibian football
NPL Chairman, Mr JJ Doeseb has declared Mr Sydney Martin as a threat to Namibian football and the football authorities and has advised them that they should not ignore him. Reacting to Mr Martin’s outburst against the NPL and its sponsor, MTC in the Namibian newspaper yesterday, Mr Doeseb said that he had no idea why Mr Martin still laboured in error that the league did not conclude after his club played the remaining 8 minutes of their last match with Orlando Pirates. He added that they (African Stars) had protested but their protest was invalid because of non-compliance with the rules relating to the lodgement of protest, whereas the rules prescribe that the protest be filed and served before the game. Contrary thereto, it was lodged after the game.
“They know the rules in that regard. We have therefore responded to them in writing to reply to their invalid protest and I can therefore not understand why he is still referring to their protest. I am amazed by the fact that he is now dragging down our sponsor and the biggest sponsor of sports in this country. MTC is the only one that keeps football alive in this country and therefore his threats are totally irresponsible and uncalled for. MTC is only a sponsor and it does not make decisions of football and related issues, it is the NPL that does so and if he has a problem with the NPL, he must take it
up with them and not with MTC,” he said. Mr Doeseb further said that, “We have also taken note of the comments he made against other teams and that Stars are financially better than them, which statement to us is totally unprofessional. On the other hand, our office is inundated with Stars players calling to ask when Stars will get their prize monies because their team informed them that they can only get paid when the prize monies are paid and these inquiries are amidst him calling his team to have financial superiority over the rest of the other teams”. He added, “As the NPL, we
have, in accordance with our rules, submitted a report to the mother body, NFA which is still busy with the matter; it is now up to them to decide what action to take against African Stars, if any. MTC, by virtue of its core business does not need to be in football and they can take their money elsewhere tomorrow and it is soccer as a whole that will suffer because of one man that is blinded by his misplaced ego, this has now gone too far”. “The MTC NPL Awards will go ahead as planned on 18 July, whether they like it or not,” conluded Mr Doeseb.
