words of wisdom

Walter’s Words of Wisdom By Walter Eugene Davis Senior Helpers – Stratham, NH

Hip Hip Hooray It’s the HOLIDAYS…… Let’s Make Them PAWsitive! In no time we will be watching Santa Claus as he is tracked by NORAD crossing the globe. This year as we all contend with COVID-19, the Coronavirus, the pandemic and the many changes that have been brought about in our lives, we still cannot stop the calendar from advancing. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, and New Years are coming at us full steam ahead just like the Polar Express.

Walter

“It's the most wonderful time of the year, with the kids jingle belling, and everyone telling you be of good cheer, It's the most wonderful time of the year…” At my house we watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” every Christmas Eve. The holiday season of 2020 will be one to be remembered, and here are a few tips to make it through in a joyful and meaningful way. That’s what Gramma used to make - Remember the banana pudding, the coconut pie with chocolate crust, the best apple pie in the world, stuffed peppers to die for and cranberry relish that were family traditions? Consider sharing those family recipes, plan a virtual family meeting to create your meal plan and then it will be like you are all together. (Don’t forget to add in the chicken and cheese treats for me!) Think outside of the box – Learn something new about a holiday that you do not celebrate. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins the evening of December 10th and runs through the evening of December 18th. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts. Kwanza is an African American and Pan-African holiday celebrated by millions throughout the world African community. Kwanza brings a cultural message which speaks to the best of what it means to be African and human in the fullest sense. This year Kwanza will be celebrated from December 26th to January 1st. Many families celebrate Christmas and New Years with various traditions; find out what others do and try something new this year. (My friend Wendy’s family opens a gift on Christmas Eve.) “Zoomolidays” – Not heard this term yet? Well welcome to 2020! Most of us will not be gathering with loved ones this year. Let’s not lose touch; try Zoom, Facetime or Google Hangouts. Take it one step further and start a fun contest: “most creative table setting,” “best decorations for the holidays” or the “ugliest sweater contest.” Just because you are home – Doesn’t mean that you have to wear your PJ’s (unless you want to!). Get out a holiday dress, a fancy shirt and tie. Getting dressed up makes us feel good. Even if the only one that is going to see you is your dog, cat or me (Walter Eugene!). Check in on a loved one – No matter what people say or post on social media, we are all going to have some challenging times ahead. It is not easy to get though the holiday season during a global pandemic. Call your family, friends, neighbors or someone that you have not seen for a while. Make a list, check in on them. We all like to know that we are being thought of and this gentle act of kindness will certainly have an impact on lives this winter. “It's the most wonderful time of the year, there’ll be much mistltoeing, and hearts will be glowing, when loved ones are near (and far), It's the most wonderful time, Yes the most wonderful time of the year.” Best wishes to you all as we wrap this year! 2020 we won’t miss you and 2021 we welcome you with open arms. Be safe my friends …. Walter Eugene
