Pinwheel Quilt Block The block measures 12 inches square. (12½ inches unfinished). This is a simple pinwheel block using navy blue tone-on-tone fabric and solid white. Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics. Follow the instructions below for each block.

1. Cut two 6 7/8 inch squares from each of the dark and light fabric. 2. Place the light squares on the dark square, right sides together. 3. Draw a diagonal line and sew ¼ inch from the line, then turn and sew ¼ inch from the other side of the line. Repeat. 4. Cut along the drawn lines, between the stitching, and press the seams toward the darker fabric. 5. Join the four quarters together to form the block, as shown in the graphic. BE CAREFUL that all the blue triangles are going in the correct direction. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12½ inches. Twelve inches after sewn into a quilt!

Hearts on Square Quilt Block The block measures 12 inches square. (12½ inches unfinished). This is a square block using bright red for the hearts, white-on-white for the background, and your choice of colors for the center using three shades of the color you choose. This should provide a somewhat scrappy look. Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics. Follow the instructions below for each block.

1. Choose 3 fabrics of the same color – 1 light, 1 medium, and 1 dark shade. 2. From the dark fabric, cut 4 rectangles 2½” x 4½” each. From the white-on-white cut 8 squares 2½” each. 3. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the white squares. Lay one white square on one dark rectangle right sides together like in illustration 1. Sew on the drawn line. Cut away excess fabric ¼” from the sewing line and press seam allowance toward the dark fabric. Repeat steps for other side of rectangle as in illustration 2. Repeat steps for other 3 rectangles.


4. From the light colored fabric, cut 4 rectangles 2½” x 4½” each. From the dark colored fabric cut 8 squares 2½” each.

5. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the dark squares. Lay one dark square on one light rectangle right sides together like in illustration 1. Sew on the drawn line. Cut away excess fabric ¼” from the sewing line and press seam allowance toward the dark fabric. Repeat steps for other side of rectangle as in illustration 2. Repeat step 5 for other 3 light rectangles. 6. You should now have 4 sets that look like illustration 6. Sew these together into 4 squares that look like illustration 7.

7. From the red fabric, cut 12 squares 2½” each. From the white fabric, cut 8 squares 1 ½” each. Also, from the white, cut 4 squares 2½” each.

8. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 1½” white squares. Lay one white square on one red square right sides together like in illustration 3. Sew on the drawn line. Cut away excess fabric ¼” from the sewing line and press seam allowance toward the red fabric. Repeat step 8 for other 7 red squares. 9. Join these 8 finished squares with the other 4 red 2½” squares and the white squares as illustrated in graphic 4. This should make 4 assembled squares that look like the heart in illustration 5. 10. Cut one square 4½” of the medium colored fabric. 11.Assemble the squares into rows, then into a block as illustrated in the graphic to the left. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12½ inches. Twelve inches after sewn into a quilt!

Card Trick Quilt Block This block measures 10 inches square. (10½ inches unfinished). This block uses two 1930's reproduction prints and a white-on-white background. Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics. Follow the instructions below for each block.

1. Cut one 4 ¾ inch white-on-white background square; cut both ways on the diagonal to form four triangles. (see graphic 1) 2. Cut two 4 3/8 inch white-on-white background squares; cut each on the diagonal to form four triangles. (see graphic 2) 3. Choose two contrasting 1930's prints. From each color cut one 4¾ inch square; cut both ways on the diagonal to form four triangles. (see graphic 1) 4. From each color cut two 4 3/8 inch squares; cut each on the diagonal to form four triangles. (see graphic 2) 5. Refer to the diagram and sew two triangles of each small print color together to form the center square. 6. Refer to the diagram and sew the remaining of each small print triangle to a small white triangle along a short edge of the triangles. Sew these to one of the larger


print triangles, as shown in the diagram. 7. Sew the remaining large print triangles to a white triangle along the long sides to form squares. 8. Assemble the squares into rows, then into a block as illustrated in the graphic to the left. Your completed unfinished block will measure 10½ inches. Ten inches after sewn into a quilt!

Arkansas Crossroads - 12" Quilt Block The next block in our Quilt Blocks of the States series is a simple four-patch pattern. Fabric Key: Cutting Instructions: Cut four 3-1/2" squares.

Cut four 3-1/2" squares.

Cut two 6-1/2" squares. Sewing Instructions: Step 1: With a pencil (or your favorite marking method), draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each green 3-1/2" square.

Step 2: With right sides together, layer a green 3-1/2" square on a cream 6-1/2" square at the upper left corner. Sew along the line that you drew in Step 1. Trim away the excess green and cream fabric 1/4" above the seam and press the seam allowance toward the darker fabric as shown below.


Step 3: With right sides together, layer a green 3-1/2" square on the lower right corner. Sew along the line that you drew in Step 1. Trim away the excess green and cream fabric 1/4" above the seam and press the seam allowance toward the darker fabric as shown below.

Step 4: Repeat Step 2 and Step 3 for a total of two cream/green diagonal stripe units. Step 5: With right sides together, layer a gold 2-1/2" square on a red 2-1/2" and stitch a 1/4" seam along one side. Press seam toward the darker fabric. Repeat three more times for a total of four gold/red rectangles.

Step 6: Arrange two gold/red rectangles to form a four-patch unit as shown below. Stitch along one long side and press seam to one side. Repeat once more for a total of two gold/red fourpatch units.

Step 7: Arrange the gold/red four-patch units and cream/green diagonal stripe units as shown in Diagram 1. With right sides together and using a scant 1/4" seam, sew together to form rows as shown in Diagram 2. Sew rows as shown in Diagram 3 to finish the block.

Your block should measure 12-1/2" on all sides. It will measure 12" finished size when it is sewn into a quilt.

Album Quilt Block The block measures 12 inches square. (12½ inches unfinished). This block is a traditional album block using civil war reproduction fabrics as the theme. The unifying element is the pink cross in the middle. Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics. Follow the instructions below for each block.

Choose 1 pink reproduction fabric and 4 other reproduction fabrics in civil war colors. (i.e. burgundy, navy blue, gray, white, and slate blue). 1. Cut 2 pink 2 5/8 inch squares. Cut 4 more 2 5/8 squares out of 2 of the other fabrics (gray and burgundy in my example).

2. Cut 1 pink rectangle 2 5/8 inches by 6 7/8 inches. Cut 4 more rectangles the same size from one of your other fabrics (white in my example).

3. From the last fabric selection, cut 3 squares 4 1/4 inches each. Cut each square diagonally twice to form 12 quarter-square traingles. (see graphic 3) 4. From the same fabric, cut 2 squares 1 7/8 inches each. Cut each square diagonally once to form 4 half-square traingles. (see graphic 4) 5. Sew 2 gray squares to each pink square to form 2 rectangles. Sew the long sides of these 2


rectangles to either side of the pink rectangle to form the pink cross. (see graphic 5) 6. Sew 2 of the white rectangels to either side of the pink cross. (see graphic 6) 7. Sew 2 of the quarter-square triangles to either side of each burgundy square to make 4 rows like are pictured in graphic 7.

8. Attach one of the half square triangles to the top of each row made in step 7. (see graphic 8) 9. Sew 2 of the quarter-square triangels to either side of the 2 remaining rectangles to form 2 rows like that pictured in graphic 9.

10. Attach 2 of the burgundy and blue triangles from step 8 to 2 of the rows created in step 9 to form a large triangle. (see graphic 10)

11. Assemble the remainder of the block as pictured in graphics 11 & 12. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 ½ inches.

4-Patch Snowball Quilt Block This block measures 12 inches square. (12 ½ inches unfinished). This block is a traditional 4-Patch Snowball block pattern using fall colors with a beige tone-on-tone background. Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics. Follow the directions below for each block.

Choose 4 fall-colored fabrics. (i.e. gold, green, orange, red, brown, etc.) 1. Cut one 6 1/2 inch square from each of the four fabrics. (see graphic 1)

2. Cut sixteen 2 1/2 inch squares from the beige-on-beige fabric. Fold each in half point-to-point to form a triangle and finger press a center seam line and open again. (see graphic 2) 3. Lay it on one corner of one of the 6 1/2 inch squares. Sew on the seam line. Repeat with the other 3 corners until you have a square that looks like graphic 3. Trim the corners to 1/4 inch from the seam. 4. Repeat with the other 3 fall fabrics. Press the seams toward the dark fabric and you will end up with four 6 1/2 inch squares. Assemble together like in graphic 4 sewing 2 snowballs together and the other 2 snowballs together. Then finally sew these two pairs of snowballs together. (reminder: use 1/4 inch seam allowances) Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 ½ inches. Twelve inches after sewn into a quilt!

Variable Star Quilt Block This block measures 12 inches square. (12 ½ inches unfinished). This block is Variable Star block. The center square is red and the background is a white-on-white fabric with the rest of the star being some sort of floral. The red center will give the finished quilt consistency. Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.

1. Cut one 2 1/2 inch square from the red fabric. 2. Cut four 3 inch squares from the floral fabric. 3. Cut four 3 inch squares and four 2 1/2 inch by 5 1/2 inch strips from the white-on-white fabric. 4. Cut four 3 3/4 inch squares from the floral fabric. Using a

rotary cutter, cut each square from corner to corner twice to form 4 quarter-square triangles. (see graphic 4) 5. Do the same with four 3 3/4 inch squares of white-on-white fabric. (see graphic 5)

NOW FOR THE SEWING!!

6. You should have 16 quarter-square triangles from both the floral and white fabrics. Match these into pairs right sides together. Sew one short side of each pair with a 1/4 inch seam to form 16 triangles like that in graphic 6. Press each pair toward the dark fabric. (make sure all finished triangles look identical with all florals on one side and whites on the other side)

7. Match two triangles together right sides together. The white parts should face the floral parts. Sew the long sides together and press open to form a square like in graphic 7. Repeat with the other 14 triangles to form a total of eight squares.

8. Refer to graphic 8 to piece together one floral 3 inch square, one white 3 inch square, and two of the pieced squares together into a 5 1/2 inch pieced square. Make sure to attach the floral triangle to the white square and the white triangle to the floral square. Repeat for four more squares. 9. Sew each long side of one white rectangle to one of the 5 1/2 inch pieced squares to make the top row of the block. Repeat for the bottom row. (refer to graphic 9) 10. Sew the middle row of the block by sewing the short sides of two white rectangles to opposite sides of the red square. (see graphic 10) 11. Finally, assemble the rows into the finished block. (see graphic 11) Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 ½ inches. Twelve inches after sewn into a quilt!

Clay's Choice Quilt Block This block measures 12 inches square. (12 ½ inches unfinished). This block also known as Jackson's Star.. This block is done in gold and red. You might be able to use some green sashing in a quilt with these blocks to give it a real "Christmasy" feel. Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.

First, choose a beige-on-beige material for the background. Then choose a gold print and red print. The more solid they


look the better, but you can be creative.

1. Cut four 3 1/2 inch squares from both the beige-on-beige and the gold fabrics.

2. Cut two 3 7/8 inch squares from both the beige-on-beige and the gold fabrics. Cut four 3 7/8 inch squares from the red fabric.

3. Cut all the 3 7/8 inch squares from corner to corner forming 16 half-square triangles. 4. Match and sew each beige triangle to a red triangle to make 4 beige/red squares. Match and sew each gold triangle to a red triangle to make 4 gold/red squares. (see graphic 4) Press each square to the red side.

5. Assemble the block by first sewing together each row and then sewing the rows together to form a block. (see graphic 5) Tip: Remember to press each row as it is finished in alternating directions (L-R and R-L). Carefully pin the rows together at each intersection before sewing. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 ½ inches. Twelve inches after sewn into a quilt! Twelve inches after sewn into a quilt!

Variation Resembling a Snowball Quilt Block This block measures 12 inches square. (12 ½ inches unfinished). It was done using Navy Blues and White-on-White fabric. Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.

First, choose a Navy print material for the background. Then choose a white-on-white for the "Snowball". 1. Cut one 4 1/2 inch square from the navy fabric and four 4 1/2 inch squares from the white-on-white fabric. 2. Cut two 4 7/8 inch squares from the navy fabric and two 4 7/8 inch squares from the white-on-white fabric. 3. Cut all the 4 7/8 inch squares from corner to corner forming 8 half-square triangles. Match and sew each whiteon-white triangle to a navy triangle using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. You will end up with 4 white/navy squares. (see graphic 3) Press each square to the navy side. 4. Assemble two rows that look like the one shown in graphic 4 by sewing two of the squares from step 3 to either side of a white 4 1/2 inch square. 5. Sew the remaining two 4 1/2 inch white squares to opposite sides of the navy square to form the middle row.


(see graphic 5). 6. Assemble these three row into the finished block. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 ½ inches. Twelve inches after sewn into a quilt!

Double Irish Chain Quilt Block Each block measures 12 1/2 inches square. (13 inches unfinished). The block pictured to the right is the "X" block. The alternating block needed to complete a Double Irish Chain quilt is described below in the instructions. Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics. First, choose a solid white material for the background. Then choose a Navy solid (or "looks like solid") and Pink tone-on1. tone print.

1. Cut four 3 inch square from the white-on-white fabric and nine 3 inch squares from the navy fabric and twelve 3 inch squares from the pink fabric.

2. Match one navy square to one pink square right sides together and sew 1/4 inch seam along one side. Press seam towards the navy side. Do this for eight pairs of navy/pink sets. (see graphic 2) Do the same for four pairs of pink/white squares. (also pictured in graphic 2)

3. Sew two navy/pink sets together matching seams to create four squares like that shown in graphic 3. Press seams.

4. Assemble two rows that look like the one shown in graphic 4 by sewing two of the squares from step 3 to either side of a pink/white set.

5. Assemble one row that looks like the one shown in graphic 5 by sewing two of the pink/white sets from step 2 to either side of one navy square. 6. Assemble these three row into the finished block. Your completed unfinished block will measure 13 inches. Twelve ½ inches after sewn into a quilt!

Alternate Block Layout

Instructions for the Alternating Blocks:


1. Cut four 3 inch square from the pink fabric and one 8 inch squares from the white-on-white fabric and four 3 inch by 8 inch rectangles from the white-on-white fabric 2. Sew two of the pink squares to either short side of one white rectangle. Repeat with the remaining pink squares and one other rectangle. Press seams to the pink. 3. Sew the long sides of the remaining two rectangles to either side of the 8-inch white square. Press seams to the center square. 4. Assemble the three rows in such a way that there is a pink square in each corner of the finished block. Use the picture to the left as a guide.

Assemble the quilt by alternating "X" blocks with these alternate blocks.

Bear Paw Quilt Block This block measures 9 inches square. (9 ½ inches unfinished). It was done using a tan tone-on-tone material for the background and rich fall colored fabric (maroon, orange, yellow, gold, rust, or brown) for the paws. Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.

First, choose a tan tone-on-tone material for the background. Then choose a rich fall colored fabric (maroon, orange, yellow, gold, rust, or brown). It can be solid, "solid-looking", or a small print. All would work beautifully. 1. From the colored fabric, cut one 6 1/2 inch square and two 4 1/4 inch squares. 2. From the tan fabric, cut two 4 1/4 inch squares and one 3 1/2 inch square.

3. Match the two 4 1/4 inch tan squares with the two 4 1/4 inch colored squares, right sides together. Draw a diagonal line on the tan fabric from one corner to the other. Sew a 1/4 inch seam along each side of this line. (see graphic 3)

4. Cut on the drawn diagonal line. You should now have four (4) half-square triangles. (see graphic 4) Press open to the dark fabric. Finally, trim the four squares to 3 1/2 inches each. 5. Assemble one row that looks like the one shown in graphic 5

Amish Star Quilt Block This block measures 12 inches square. (12 ½ inches unfinished). It was done using the basic black and jewel tones. Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.

First, choose a solid black material for the background. Then choose a bright jewel-tone fabric that "looks like solid" from a distance. (i.e. ruby red, emerald green, turqoise, sapphire blue, amathyst purple, etc.). Finally, for the unifying fabric, choose a bright, solid-looking gold. Cutting instructions: 1. From the jewel-tone fabric, cut one 4 1/2 inch square for the center, four 4 1/2 inch by 2 1/2 inch rectangles, and four 2 7/8 inch squares. Cut the small squares in half diagonally to form 8 half-square triangles. 2. From the black fabric, cut four 4 1/2 inch by 2 1/2 inch rectangles, four 2 7/8 inch squares, and eight 2 1/2 inch squares. Cut the 2 7/8 inch squares in half diaginally to form 8 half-square triangles. 3. From the gold fabric, cut eight 2 1/2 inch squares. With a pencil, mark a line on the wrong side of the gold fabric from one corner to the other. (see graphic 3) Piecing instructions: 4. Sew together the black and jewel-tone triangles using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. You should have eight (8) black/jeweltone squares. (see graphic 4) Press open to the dark fabric. 5. Sew together one 2 1/2 inch black square to each

black/jewel-tone square. Make sure the black square is sewn to the jewel-tone triangle side. (see graphic 5) Press to the black square. Assemble two of these pairs of squares into 4 1/2 inch squares like that in graphic 5. You should have four. 6. For each of the four gold/black sections, do the following: Lay one gold square on the left side of one of the black rectangles (right sides together). Sew on the pencil line, and trim the corner to 1/4 inch from the sewing line. (see graphic 6) 7. Repeat with the right side of the black rectangle. Press to the gold sides and you will end up with a gold/black rectangle like in graphic 7. 8. Attach the black side of the gold/black rectangle to the long edge of a jewel-tone rectangle. (see graphic 8) 9. Finally, assemble all the 4 1/2 inch squares into three rows as shown in graphic 9, and assemble the rows into a finished block. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 1/2 inches. 12 inches after sewn into a quilt!
