Winter Star Quilt Block This block measures 12 inches square. (12 1/2 inches unfinished). Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.

Choose two shades of blue. One should be a medium and the other a dark blue and the other should be a solid looking color. The background is a white-on-white fabric. 1. From the white fabric, cut four 3 1/2 inch squares and four 3 7/8 inch squares. Cut the larger white squares from one corner to the other to form eight half-square triangles. 2. From each of the blue fabrics, cut four 3 7/8 inch squares. Cut each blue square from one corner to the other to form eight half-square triangles in each shade.
3. Match four of the white triangles to four of the medium blue triangles right sides together and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the long sides. Press open to the blue side. You will end up with four medium blue/white squares like that in graphic 3. Do the same with the other four white triangles and four of the dark blue triangles to form four dark blue/white squares. (again see graphic 3) 4. Match the remaining four medium blue triangles to the remaining four dark blue triangles. Sew along the long sides and press open to the dark side. You will end up with four medium/dark blue squares like that in graphic 4.
5. Assemble one corner of the finished block by joining one dark blue/white square to one medium/dark blue square. Join one 3 1/2 inch white square to the medium blue/white square. Sew these two rows into one 6 1/2 inch square. See graphic 5 for the exact layout. Repeat for the other three corners of the finished square.
6. You should now have four 6 1/2 inch squares that look like the one in graphic 6. Assemble these into the finished square. Refer to graphic 7 for the layout. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 1/2 inches. 12 inches after sewn into a quilt!
Log Cabin with an appliquĂŠd heart Quilt Block This block measures 14 inches square. (14 1/2 inches unfinished). Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.

Choose 6 different coordinating Debbie Mumm fabrics...3 darker shades and 3 lighter shades. Also choose a matching off-white fabric for the center and a red for the heart. (The heart is optional... for those of you who like to applique) 1.From the off-white fabric, cut one 2 1/2 inch square. From the six coordinating fabrics, cut 2 1/2 inch strips at least 15 inches long.

2. Sew a light shade strip to one side of the off-white square. Trim strip even with the square. Press the seam to the light shade. Sew the remaining strip of the same light shade fabric to the long side of the pair of squares. Press to the longer strip.

3. Continue adding strips in this manner, using a darker shade for the next adjacent sides, repeating light print strips on the light sides and dark print strips on the dark sides until there are three strips on each side of the muslin square.

4. As an option... Applique an appropriate size heart, using red Debbie Mumm print fabric, in the center of the off-white square. You may use any method of applique you wish. If you don't do the "A" word, leave the center square blank. Your completed unfinished block will measure 14 1/2 inches, 14 inches after sewn into a quilt!
Sailboat Quilt Block This block measures 8 inches square. (8 1/2 inches unfinished). Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.

Choose a tone-on-tone dark shade of a spring color (pink, green, blue, yellow, or purple) and a medium shade coordinating fabric. The background is a white-onwhite.

1. From the white-on-white fabric, cut eight 2 1/2 inch squares. From the dark fabric, cut two 2 1/2 inch squares.

2. From the white-on-white fabric, cut three 2 7/8 inch squares. From the dark fabric, cut one 2 7/8 inch square. From the coordinating fabric, cut two 2 7/8 squares. Cut each of these squares diagonally to form 12 triangles. 3. With right sides together, sew each of the dark and coordinating triangles to a white-on-white triangle along the long side of the triangle using a 1/4" seam

allowance. You should end up with six half-square triangle sets. Four will look like the first square in graphic 3 and two will look like the second square in graphic 3. Press seams to the dark sides. 4. Sew the squares into four rows and then assemble these four rows into a finished block. Refer to graphics 4 & 5 for placement. Remember to pin the rows together well at the seams to ensure your corners match up as closely as possible. Your completed unfinished block will measure 8 1/2 inches, 8 inches after sewn into a quilt!

Four Patch Chain Quilt Block This block measures 12 inches square. (12 1/2 inches unfinished). Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.

Pick two coordinating or contrasting colors from your stash and use bleached, white muslin for the chain cross. 1. From the background fabric, cut twelve 3 1/2 inch squares.

2. From the coordinating fabric, cut one 2 inch by 18 inch strip. From the white muslin, also cut one 2 inch by 18 inch strip. 3. With right sides together, sew the strips along the long side of the rectangle using a 1/4" seam allowance. You should end up with a 2-tone strip 3 1/2 inches by 18 inches. Press to the dark side. Cut the strip at 2 inch intervals to make 8 pairs of squares. There will be a small amount left over which can be discarded. 4. Sew 2 of these sections right sides together with a 1/4" seam allowance. (See graphic 4) Repeat with the other 6 sections. You will end up with four 4-patch squares each 3 1/2 inches square. Press 5. Referring to graphics 5 & 6 assemble the 4-patch squares and the 3 1/2 inch background squares into four larger squares. There will be two of each.

6. Sew the larger squares into two rows and then assemble these rows into a finished block. Refer to graphic 7 for placement. Remember to pin the rows together well at the seams to ensure your corners match up as closely as possible. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 1/2 inches, 12 inches after sewn into a quilt!

Garden of Eden Quilt Block This block measures 12 inches square. (12 1/2 inches unfinished) Instructions:

Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.
Choose a small-print yellow fabric for the cross, a purple floral print for the flowers, and a white solid for the background. 1. From the purple fabric, cut one 3 inch square. (all cutting instructions include the seam allowance.) 2. From the yellow fabric, cut four rectangles 3 inches by 5 1/4 inches.

3. From the purple fabric, cut eight 3 1/4 inch squares. From the white fabric, also cut eight 3 1/4 inch squares. Cut all sixteen squares diagonally from one corner to the other to form 16 purple and 16 white triangles.

4. With right sides together, sew one of the purple triangles to one of the white triangles along the long edges using a 1/4" seam allowance. You should end up with a purple and white "half-square triangle" like that pictured in graphic 4. Press to the dark side. Repeat for the other 15 pairs of triangles. You will end up with sixteen 2 7/8 inch squares.

5. Sew 2 of these squares right sides together along the purple sides with a 1/4" seam allowance. (See graphic 5) Repeat with the other 7 pairs of squares. You will end up with eight "flying geese" sections. Press all pairs to the same side. Sew 2 of these sections right sides together along the purple sides using a 1/4" seam allowance. (pin well to make sure seams match in the center) Repeat with the other 3 pairs of flying geese sections. You will end up with four squares with a purple diamond in the center. (see graphic 5)

6. Referring to graphic 6 assemble the first row by joining two of the purplediamond squares to either side of a yellow cross piece along its long edge. Repeat with the remaining two squares and another cross piece. Press seams to the yellow sides. 7. Referring to graphic 7 assemble the middle row by joining two of the yellow

cross pieces to either side of the 3 inch purple square sewing along the short edge of the yellow pieces. Press seams to the yellow side. 8. Referring to graphic 8 assemble the three rows from steps 6 & 7 into a finished block. Press well. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 1/2 inches., 12 inches after sewn into a quilt!
Roman Square Quilt Block Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 inches.

Choose a bright kid's fabric and 3 primary-colored fabrics. (kid's red, green, blue, or yellow). The block looks good if there is a dark, medium, and light shade. They can be solid, "looks like solid", or a print that coordinates well with the center fabric. 1. Cut one strip 16 inches long and 5 inches wide from each of the three primary fabrics. (see graphic 1) Cut each strip at 1 7/8 inch intervals to form eight smaller strips of 1 7/8 inches by 5 inches for each color. There will be a small amount left as a buffer... throw it away. 2. Cut one 4 1/2 inch square from the kid's print. (see graphic 2)

3. Assemble the 3 colored strips into squares by sewing the long edges of the dark, medium, and light colored strips together in that order using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press to the darker sides and trim the blocks to a 4 1/2 inch square. You will end up with eight striped squares. (see graphic 3)

4. Assemble block together referring to graphic 4. Sew the three rows together first and then sew the rows together into a block. Pin well where corners meet before sewing to ensure those "perfect" intersections.

Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 ½ inches, 12 inches after sewn into a quilt!
"Jake's Heart" Quilt Block Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cottonpre-washed fabrics. This block measures 9 inches square. (9 ½ inches unfinished).
Choose a small-print pastel fabric and solid contrasting fabric for the heart, and use a white-on-white fabric for the background. Cutting instructions:

1. From the small-print pastel fabric, cut two 2 inch by 5 inch rectangles and five 2 inch squares. (see graphic 1) 2. From the solid, contrasting fabric, cut two 2 inch by 5 inch rectangles and four 2 inch squares. (see graphic 2) 3. From the white background fabric, cut two 2 inch by 3 1/2 inch rectangles and four 2 inch squares. (see graphic 3) Mark the wrong side of the white squares with a diagonal pencil line from one corner to the opposite corner.

4. From the white background fabric, cut two additional rectangles. Cut one 2 inches by 8 inches and cut one 2 inches by 9 1/2 inches. (see graphic 4) Assembly instructions:

1. With right sides together, sew one print 2-inch square to one solid 2-inch square using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Press seams to the solid fabric. Repeat twice making 3 sets total. Refering to graphic 5, add an alternate 2inch square to the end of each set making 3 rows of 3 squares. Press seams to the solid fabric. Sew the 3 rows together to form a nine-patch square. (Remember to pin the seams well before sewing to ensure that points match) Press seams in one direction. 2. Place two white 2-inch squares face down on the ends of one of the print rectangles. Sew along the pencil diagonal lines. Refer to graphic 6A. Trim the seam to 1/4-inch seam allowance. (6B.) Press the white squares open to the print side. (6C) Repeat the process for a solid rectangle and the remaining two white squares. Press 3. Sew the units from step 2 to the matching print or solid rectangles along the long sides. Press. Sew the two 2-inch x 3 1/2-inch white rectangles together. Press.

4. Sew the white square unit from step 3 to the right side of the print & white unit. Sew the long side of the solid & white unit from step 3 to the right side of the nine-patch square from step 1. Referring to graphic 7, sew these two rows together into a heart-shaped center block. 5. Finally, sew the 2-inch x 8-inch strip of white fabric to the top of the heart. Press.

Sew the 9 1/2-inch strip of white fabric to the right side of the heart. Press. Your completed unfinished block will measure 9 ½ inches, 9 inches after sewn into a quilt!

"Strippy Heart" Quilt Block Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics. This block measures 12 inches square. (12 ½ inches unfinished).
Choose a red print fabric, a blue print fabric, and a bleached white muslin for the background. Cutting instructions: 1. From the muslin and the outer color (blue in my example) cut two 1 1/2 inch strips from the full width of a 44-inch wide fabric. If you are using fat quarters, cut four strips 1 1/2 inches wide. 2. From the inner color (red in my example) cut one 1 1/2 inch strip from the full width of fabric, or two 1 1/2 inch strips from a fat quarter. 3. Cut the following pieces from the 1 1/2 inch strips. All dimensions include a 1/4 inch seam allowance and can be cut exactly as specified. After cutting, stack the pieces for each row separately. Note, the colors specified are for my example. If you reverse the colors, reverse the colors in the instructions as well. Press seams to the darker fabrics. 3. Stitch the rows together. Press. 4. Sew the 12 1/2 inch white strips to the left and right sides of the heart, completing the block. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 ½ inches, 12 inches after sewn into a quilt!
"Christmas Tree" Quilt Block Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics. This block measures 9 inches square. (9 ½ inches unfinished).

Choose a dark green print fabric for the tree, an off-white fabric for the background, and a red print fabric for the tree topper..

Cutting instructions: 1. From the red accent material, cut one 1 1/2 inch square. 2. From both the off-white and green fabrics cut one 1 1/2 inch strip from the full width of fabric or from a fat quarter. 3. From both the off-white and green fabrics cut one 2 1/2 inch strip from the full width of fabric or from a fat quarter.

4. From the 1 1/2 inch strip of green fabric, cut two rectangles: one 5 1/2 inches long one 3 1/2 inches long. 5. From the 2 1/2 inch strip of green fabric, cut three rectangles: one 3 1/2 inches long one 7 1/2 inches long one 9 1/2 inches long.

6. From the 1 1/2 inch strip of off-white fabric, cut six rectangles: two 4 1/2 inches long two 3 1/2 inches long two 2 1/2 inches long 7. From the 2 1/2 inch strip of off-white fabric, cut four rectangles: two 3 1/2 inches long two 1 1/2 inches long

8. Layout the pieces into rows using the following pieces: Row #1 - the red square between two 4 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch offwhite rectangles.

Row #2 - the green 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch green & two 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch off-white rectangles. Row #3 - the green 5 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch green & two 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch off-white rectangles. Row #4 - the green 7 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch green & two 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch off-white rectangles. Row #5
- the green 9 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch strip.
Row #6 - the green 3 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch green & two 3 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch off-white rectangles. Assembly instructions: 1. With right sides together and using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, join the peices in each row. Press seams to the darker fabrics.

2, Stitch the rows together. Press. Do not trim the block(s). Leave that up to the winner. Your completed unfinished block will measure 9 ½ inches, 9 inches after sewn into a quilt!

"Maple Leaf" Quilt Block Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics. This block measures 12 inches square (12 ½ inches unfinished).

Choose a fall-colored tone-on-tone fabric for the leaf, and a creamcolored solid or looks-like-solid fabric for the background. Cutting instructions: 1. From the cream background material, cut one 4 1/2 inch square. From the colored fabric, cut four 4 1/2 inch squares.

2. From both the background and colored fabrics, cut two 4 7/8 inch squares. Cut all four squares diagonally to form eight triangles. 3. From the background fabric, cut two 4 1/8 inch square. With a pencil, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner on each square.

Piecing instructions: 4. With right sides together, sew each of the colored triangles to a cream-colored triangle along the long side of the triangles using a 1/4" seam allowance. You should end up with four half-square triangle sets. See graphic 4. Press seams to the dark sides. 5. With right sides together, lay one of the 4 1/8 inch cream-colored squares along the upper right hand corner of the 4 1/2 inch colored square. Sew along the pencil line. Cut through both layers of fabric 1/4 inch to the outside of the sewn line. See graphic 5. Press to the light fabric. 6. With right sides together, lay the other 4 1/8 inch cream-colored square along the lower left hand corner of the 4 1/2 inch colored square. Sew along the pencil line. Cut through both layers of fabric 1/4 inch to the outside of the sewn line. See graphic 6. Press to the light fabric. You should now have a "stem" square. Assembly instructions: 7. With right sides together and using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, join the peices in each row. Press seams in each row in opposite directions. (i.e. to the left in row one, to the right in row two, and to the left in row three.).

8. Assemble these three rows into a finished block. Refer to graphics 7 & 8 for placement. Remember to pin the rows together well at the seams to ensure your corners match up as closely as possible. Do not trim the block(s). Leave that up to the winner. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 ½ inches, 12 inches after sewn into a quilt!
"Snowman" Quilt Block
The block measures 8 X 12 inches. (8 ½ X 12 ½ inches unfinished). Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics. Choose a Christmas green patterned fabric for the background, a whiteon-white fabric for the snowman's body, and a solid black for the snowman's hat.

Cutting instructions: 1. From the black fabric, cut one 2 1/2 x 3 1/4 inch rectangle and one 1 x 5 inch rectangle. 2. From the background fabric cut the following: a. Cut two - 2 1/2 x 3 1/8 inch rectangles. b. Cut two - 1 x 2 1/4 inch rectangles

c. Cut two - 2 3/4 x 3 3/8 inch rectangles d. Cut two - 3 3/4 x 2 3/4 inch rectangles e. Cut two - 4 1/2 x 2 1/4 inch rectangles

f. Cut four - 1 inch squares. Fold each in half point-to-point to form a triangle and finger press a center seam line and open again. g. Cut four - 1 1/2 inch squares. Fold each in half point-to- point to form a triangle and finger press a center seam line and open again. h. Cut four - 1 3/4 inch squares. Fold each in half point-to-point to form a triangle and finger press a center seam line and open again.

3. From the white-on-white snowman fabric cut one 2 3/4 inch square, one 3 3/4 x 4 inch rectangle, and one 4 1/2 x 5 inch rectangle. Assembly instructions: 4. Lay the four 1-inch green squares on the four corners of the 2 3/4 inch white square. Sew on the pressed seam lines. Do the same with the four 1 1/2 inch green squares and the smaller white rectangle. Again with the four 1 3/4 inch green squares and the larger white rectangle. You will end up with three blocks that look like those in graphic 4.

5. Trim the corners to 1/4 inch from the sewn line. See graphic 5. 6. Press the corners open like in graphic 6.

7. Refering to graphic 7, assemble the pieces into rows. The pieces cut in steps 2a-2e go in order for rows 1-5. With right sides together and using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, join the peices in each row. Press seams to the background fabrics. Finished rows should look like those in
graphic 8. 8. Stitch the rows together. Press. Your completed unfinished block will measure 8 1/2 x 12 ½ inches.

"Nine-Patch Variation" Quilt Block The block measures 12 inches square. (12 ½ X 12 ½ inches unfinished). Instructions: Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.

Choose a large-print Christmas fabric with a scene that will show nicely in the 4-inch square center block. Then choose matching solid or small-print, dark green and Christmasy red fabrics for the background Cutting instructions:

1. From the Christmas scene fabric, "fussy-cut" one 4 1/2 inch square so that the scene you want to display is centered in the block. 2. From the green background fabric cut the following:

a. Cut four - 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangles b. Cut four - 2 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch strips
3. From the red accent fabric cut eight 2 1/2 inch squares

Assembly instructions: 4. Using a 1/4-inch seam allowance, sew a red square to either end of one of the green 2 1/2 x 4 1/2-inch rectangles. Repeat with one of the other green rectangles so that you have 2 strips that look like those in graphic 4. Press seams to the green fabric. 5. Sew the remaining two green rectangles lengthwise to either side of your Christmas scene square. See graphic 5. Press seams to the green fabric. 6. Lay out the three rows you've created as shown in graphic 6 and sew together to form your center pieced square. Remember to pin at intersections for clean corners. 7. Sew two of the remaining red squares to either end of one of the green 2 1/2 x 8 1/2-inch strips. Repeat with one of the other green strips so that you have 2 strips that look like those in graphic 7. Press seams to the green side.

8. Sew the remaining two green strips to the sides of the center block. See graphic 8. Press to the green strips. 9. Referring to graphic 9, layout and stitch the rows together. Press. Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 ½ x 12 ½ inches.
