Introduction to the Friendship Star Quilt Block

Friendship Star Quilt Block The Friendship Star quilt block is super easy, but it doesn't have to be boring. Try making quilt blocks with a rich, black background and brightly colored solid or tone-on-tone stars. When the blocks are put together, you'll see that a secondary pattern emerges between the colorful patches. I've included cutting instructions for a 12-inch finished quilt block and a 6-inch finished block. Friendship Star - 12-inch Block • Black: cut four 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares; cut two 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares • Bright solid or tone on tone: Cut one 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" square; cut two 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares Friendship Star - 6-inch Block • Black: cut four 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares; cut two 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares • Bright solid or tone on tone: Cut one 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" square; cut two 2-7/8" x 2-7/8"

Friendship Star Quilt Block Assembly Refer to the illustration above as you make the Friendship Star quilt block. Sew with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Make Half Square Triangle Units 1. Pair a 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" black square with a bright square of the same size (2-7/8" squares for the 6-inch block). Use my easy sandwich method to sew the pairs together, creating two black/bright half-square triangle units. 2. Repeat with the remaining pair of the same size to make a total of four identical triangle square units. Completed triangle square units for the 12-inch block should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2". Competed triangle square units for the 6-inch block should measure 2-1/2" x 2-1/2". Assemble Three Rows 1. Arrange your triangle square units, bright square and plain black squares into three rows as shown above. Sew the components of each row together and press the seam allowances towards the plain squares. 2. Sew the rows together, using the loft created by pressed seams to butt seam intersections into each other for a snug fit. 3. The larger block should measure 12-1/2" x 121/2". The smaller block should measure 6-1/2" x 6-1/2". If your block is smaller than it should be, or skewed along one side, press and recheck.

Star Quilt Blocks eBook Introduction to the Simplified Dolly Madison Star Quilt Block Pattern

Simplified Dolly Madison Star Quilt Block Pattern Here's a pretty patchwork quilt block that's a cross between Ohio Star and the more intricate Dolly Madison Star. • The quarter square triangle units that make up the star tips are easily created by using quick pieced half square triangle units as their parents. • The block's center is a simple nine-patch unit. • Block corners are created with rotary cut fabric squares. Star Quilt Blocks eBook strip pieced -- a good method for many identical blocks. Use 1-1/2" wide strips of the two fabrics and create strip sets that mimic rows 1 and 3 (identical) and row 2 (example - left and middle drawings). Use the segment size and number of segments needed to calculate strip length, for instance: 1. If you're making three quilt blocks, you will need 6 row 1/row 3 segments (3 blocks x 2 segments for each = 6) 2. 6 segments x 1-1/2" for each segment length = 9" 3. Add 1/2" to 1" for squaring up the strip set before cutting segments (I use 1" to compensate for potential cutting errors) 4. cut two 1-1/2" x 10" neutral strips and one 11/2" x 10" black strip 5. Sew the neutral strips lengthwise to each side of the black strip. Press, square up and cut away the (6) 1-1/2" segments 6. Calculate strip lengths for center row in the same way

When positioned right sides together for sewing, the blue print halves should be against a contrasting fabric, not blue against blue. (quarter square triangle unit instructions) 6. When cut apart, each quarter square triangle should have two blue print triangles across from each other; the neutral and red triangles will be in the remaining positions as illustrated. 7. Arrange the 1-1/2" background and dark squares into three rows as shown, center illustration. 8. Sew squares in each row together. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. 9. Join the rows, matching seam intersections carefully. 10.Arrange your pieced components and the 31/2" background squares into three rows as shown. Intro to the Twinkling Star Quilt Block Pattern

Intro to the Twinkling Star Quilt Block Pattern The design is very scrap-friendly, and you can put your small pieces to work assembling the little half square triangle units (HSTs) that make up a large portion of the star tips. About those little units. Technically, you can make the HST units with a pair of 1-7/8" x 1-7/8" squares, sewing them together and then cutting them apart to produce two HST units (the quick sandwich method of construction). But these units are tiny, with no room for error, so I encourage you to use larger than necessary squares and then trim the completed HST units to 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" after assembly. You'll find that exactly-sized units provide a more accurate quilt block that's easier to assemble. Finished block size: 12" x 12" My color and value suggestions offer a visual for construction, change elements to suit you. Red for star tips: (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares Green for inner "pinwheel": (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally Neutral light for background: can be more than one fabric: • (4) 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" squares • (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares • (2) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" squares, each cut in half once diagonally

Variations of the Twinkling Star Quilt Block

Variations of the Twinkling Star Quilt Block Here are three color/layout variations of the Twinkling Stars quilt block, with the version from page 1 in the middle for comparison. Let's talk about the others: Left: The (2) 3-7/8" green squares from page 1 (each cut in half once diagonally) are replaced with black print squares; the same black print replaces the (2) 3-7/8" red squares that are paired with neutral squares to create HST units for outer star tips. The result is a block with more of a "spin" created by linking those like pieces, and more contrast against the small HST units that make up remaining star points. Personally, this is my favorite. Middle: The block from page 1. Right: Blue replaces the red fabric used for solid star tips.
