ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS Step 1. Flying Geese Unit Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of Piece 2A red squares. Layer Piece 2A square and Piece 1D cream rectangle, right sides together. Sew directly on top of drawn line. Cut away excess fabric 1/4" from seamline. Press seam allowance. Repeat for other end of rectangle (Diagram I). Make 8.

Diagram I Step 2. Square in a Square Unit Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of Piece 1B cream square. Layer Piece 2A and upper right corner of Piece 1B cream square, right sides together. Sew directly on top of drawn line. Cut away excess fabric 1/4" from seamline. Press seam allowance. Using Diagram II as a guide, repeat the steps for each corner of the square. Make 8.

Step 3. Four-patch Unit Sew Piece 4F medium green strip to Piece 5F dark green strip. Press seam toward dark green. Subcut twopatch rectangles 1 1/2" x 2 1/2". Cut 16 two-patch rectangles total (Diagram IIIA). Using Diagram IIIB as a guide, sew 2 two-patch rectangles together to make a four-patch unit. Make 8 total.

Step 4. Sub-unit #1 Using Diagram IV as a guide, place Piece 1A 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" cream square, 2 flying geese units and 1 four-patch unit as shown. Sew units and square together to make sub-unit #1. Make 4 total.

Diagram IV Step 5. Sub-unit #2 Using Diagram V as a guide, place Piece 1E 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strip, 2 square-in-a-square units, and one four-patch unit as shown. Sew units and strip together to make sub-unit #2. Make 4 total.

Diagram V Step 6. Pieced Square Sub Unit Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of Piece 3C 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" gold squares. Layer Piece 3C square and Piece 1C 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" cream square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" offset from each side of the drawn line (Diagram VI-A). Cut sewn squares diagonally using unsewn corners as guide (Diagram VI-B). Yield 2 sets of triangles. Cut each triangle set on previously drawn line (Diagram VI-C). Press seams toward gold triangles. Yield 4 sets of quarter-square triangles. Using Diagram VI-D as a guide, place triangle sets so that there are alternating gold and cream trianlges. Sew together to form pieced-square. Make 4 total. 5-Star Block - Page 3 Step 7. Ohio Star Unit Using Diagram VII as a guide, place 4 Piece 1B 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" cream squares, 1 Piece 3B 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" gold squares, and 4 pieced square sub units as shown. Sew units and squares together to make Ohio Star Block. Make 1.

Step 8. Block Assembly Using Assembly Diagram as a guide, place sub-units and Ohio Star Block as shown. Sew sub-units together to make rows, then rows together to make 5-Stars Block.

Amish Star

Skill Level BEGINNER Finished Size 12" x 12" Cutting Instructions Gold print ... 4 squares 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" ... 8 squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" ... 4 rectangles 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" ... 1 square 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" Navy solid ... 8 squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" ... 4 squares 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" ... 4 rectangles 2 1/2" x 4 ½" Assembly Instructions Step 1. On wrong side of 2 7/8" gold print fabric, draw diagonal line with the marking tool of your choice. Layer square with 2 7/8" navy square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Press open to make pieced squares (Diagram I). Make 8 pieced-squares. Step 2. Using Diagram II as a placement guide, sew 2 pieced squares to 2 navy 2 1/2" squares. Make 4 total.

Step 3. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of gold print 2 1/2" square. Referring toDiagram III, place marked square on navy rectangle, right sides together, aligning raw edges. Stitch on drawn line; trim away and discard excess fabric. Press open. Repeat on opposite end to make pieced rectangle. Make 4.

Step 4. Using Diagram IV as a guide, sew pieced rectangle to gold print rectangle. Make 4.


Step 5. Using Assembly Diagram as placement guide, sew units together to make rows. Sew rows together to make Amish Star Block.

Blazing Star

Skill Level INTERMEDIATE Finished Size 12" x 12" CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS Background - Fabric 1 ... Piece B ... Cut 4 squares 4" x 4" ... Piece C ... Cut 1 square 6 1/4" x 6 1/4", cut in half diagonally twice to make 4 quarter-square triangles

Green Print - Fabric 3 ... Piece A ... Cut 16 diamonds (see below) Red Solid - Fabric 4 ... Piece A ... Cut 8 diamonds (see below)

Yellow - Fabric 2 ... Piece A ... Cut 8 diamonds (see below) CUTTING DIAMONDS For an easy way to cut the diamonds in Blazing Star, refer to "Rotary Cutting Unusual Shapes" instructions in our Lessons section. If you prefer not to download the template diagram, use the following instructions and Diagram I when cutting the required diamond shaped pieces: ... Diagram I SUB UNIT ASSEMBLY Pieced Diamonds: Using intersecting points, align diamonds and sew from edge to edge. (Diagram II) Make 8.

Diagram II BLOCK ASSEMBLY Sew pieced diamonds together forming quadrants. Sew quadrants together. (Diagram III) Set-in quarter-square triangles and corner squares to complete the Blazing Star block. (Diagram IV)

Piecing the block Step 1. On wrong side of background squares, draw diagonal line with marking tool of your choice. Using Diagram I as a guide, layer square together with background fabric on top. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line: cut apart on marked line. Press open to make pieced squares.

Diagram I Step 2. Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of, Piece 4A dark blue squares. UsingDiagram II as a guide, layer Piece 4A dark blue square and Piece 1C background rectangle, right sides together. Sew directly on top of drawn line. Cut away excess fabric 1/4" from seamline. Press seam allowance toward dark blue triangle. Repeat for other end of rectangle. Make 4 Flying Geese units.

Diagram II Step 3. Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of 2" squares. Using Diagram III as a guide, layer dark blue square


and upper right corner of Piece 1D background square, right sides together. Sew directly on top of drawn line. Cut away excess fabric 1/4" from seamline. Press seam allowance toward corner triangle. Repeat the steps for each corner of the square. Make 4.

Referring to Diagram I, stitch 2 peach solid Template A and 2 medium green solid Template A together. Make 4 total pieced star points.

Make 4 Diagram I Step 2. Sew 4 dark green print Template B and 4 pieced star points together (seeAssembly Diagram). Set-in background 6 1/4" quarter-square triangles and 4" squares to complete Star Block.

Flying Swallows

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS Step 1. Referring to Diagram I, "set-in" 3 burgundy Template A and 2 light blue quarter-square triangles. Sewing from "edge-to-edge," sew quarter-square triangle on each end of unit to make pieced-diamond. (NOTE: Pay close attention to layout of triangles when making pieced-diamond.)

Diagram I Step 2. Using Diagram II as a guide, sew 8 pieced-diamonds together to make 8-pointed star. (NOTE: Pay close attention to layout of pieced-diamonds. "Swallows" (small diamonds) should rotate in a clockwise direction.)

Diagram II Step 3. Set-in background 6 1/4" quarter-square triangles and 4" squares to complete Flying Swallows Block.

Background ... Color #1 .....1A - Cut eight 3 3/4" quarter square triangles .....2B - Cut four 2 1/4" squares .....1C - Cut four 2 1/4" x 4" rectangles

Stripe ... Fabric #3 .....Cut strip 1 3/4" x 44". Using 45 degree angle on ruler, cut 8 diamonds.

Purple with Flower ... Color #2 .....For non-Kaleidoscope diamonds: Cut 2 strips 1 3/4" x 44". Using 45 degree angle on ruler, cut 24 diamonds (see cutting diagrams).

Pink ... Fabric #4 .....Cut four 2 1/4" squares Purple ... Fabric #5 .....Cut one 4" square

Cutting Diamonds

Diagram I For Kaleidoscope design: Make a diamond shaped plastic template including seam line. (See Diagram II.) With right side of fabric up select a motif and center the template on top of it (ignore grain line). Trace an outline of the motif directly onto the plastic using a marking tool of your choice. Mark the fabric around the template and cut it out. Using guidelines drawn on the template, mark and cut out 23 more identical pieces. Erase guidelines if you are making more than one block. Trace new guidelines for each motif.

Jackson Star - Page 2 Assembly Diagram Step 1. Using Diagram III as piece guide, mark match points on wrong side of fabric. Sew to match point and back stitch.

Diagram III Step 2. Using Diagram IV as piece guide, mark match points on wrong side of fabric. Sew to inner match points and back stitch. Sew to edge at outer match points.

Diagram IV Step 3. Using Diagram V as piece guide, mark match points on wrong side of fabric. Back stitch at match points.
