Beginning with a brief to create a yearbook to represent the 2012 graduates from the Leeds College
three main sections— film, games and animation— the yearbook worked with an RGB colour scheme,
& Maya Srivastava, Rob Green, Robyn Makinson
of Art BA (Hons) and FD Digital Film, Games and Animation course, to showcase students’ work in a
which was felt best represented the digital nature of the course. Yellow was also added to break up

required format. The concept worked using a visual representation of the course through colours to
the book more, and add another level of information. Brand guidelines for the college had to be

The categorisation of the information, and division of the workload, was based upon the way the
work are easily identifiable and sections or chapters within the book were created. In addition, yellow

structure. Division of the whole book like this meant that design workload was easily designated, with

An important element of how the book was set up for the design was in the structure of the underlying
requirements, the inside margin is slightly wider to accommodate the perfect bound format, and the

grid. Using a 12x12 format allowed for a lot of versatility, which was necessary when the format and
3mm bleed was incorporated. Leaving the edges of the pages clear was devised so that when flicking

content of the work was so varied. Taking into account factors such as binding formats and printing
through the book, a particular category could be easily found through the colours used.

Each of the three layout designers took on a different section of the book. With each cam e a different
and ideas. Ensuring the work adhered to the grid was necessary, and the positioning and scale of the

style of work to be accommodated. Within the animation section, the image content given varied
images had to be considered in each individual circumstance. Due to the digital nature of the course,

from complete renders of finalised frames, through initial digital artwork concepts, to initial drawings
it was necessary to format the files correctly for print, ensuring each was at 300dpi and in CMYK.

content that goes alongside the work. This shape continues through the layouts of the divider pages.
