Dissertation Title “The suitability of the use of Papyrus within the film ‘Avatar’ and the associations held with the typeface.”

Dissertation Tutor Rationale

Lorraine McKee

As someone with a type focussed approach to design, I want to explore the ways in which typeface choices, and the execution of typography within layout, can influence the effectiveness of my work. I want my work to be first and foremost appropriate for it’s purpose, and I wish to use typography to help ensure this. Layout and colour are two other focuses within my work that I consider to be most influential, and I intend on developing these elements. I have written all my briefs with a print focus in mind, although I don’t want to discount screen-based mediums. I think it’s important that I am able to design for screen purposes, even if I am not able to go as far as making the designs functional/interactive on screen. Print production is something that I want to become more adept at, and I want to be able to understand the processes that I’m using much better. Branching out and using processes that I am not familiar with is also an aim within this module, although not to the extent where it will negatively impact upon the work I produce, just expand and broaden it. Statement of Intent (SOI) – My intentions within the module are relatively simple- to create a body of work that I will be happy to display in my portfolio, and to learn from the design process throughout. Obviously it’s a little more complex than this though, and I need to make sure that the briefs I am undertaking will cover a number of other points. I want to collaborate with another graphic designer. Jonny Finch has offered to work on a brief with me for this module, as we’re both print driven people, and have complimenting skills- myself in type and Jonny in image. Another aim is to practice working with a very short time limitation on a brief. I’m going to allow myself 24 hours for each of the Drop Caps I am designing for that brief- this should enable me to get used to fast paced working toward tight deadlines. On top of this I am going to take part in the Manchester Book Fair in October, which gives me another tight deadline, as well as an opportunity to create work for sale to the public. Each brief I am undertaking will allow me to create a different resolution, which I think is important within a portfolio. Packaging, publications, identity, as well as ranges of designed products are covered in my selected briefs. I am also going to undertake a competition brief- either YCN, D&AD or ISTD. I have not included this in my four selected though. As well as this I intend on taking part in live briefs as and when they come up, for example, the Imagine That brief for a magazine cover.

Proposed research Areas & Themes With typography being my primary focus through the module, I am of course going to have type as a focal point of my research as well. I am going to look in particular at contextual examples of type being used in effective ways for the purpose, and I am also hoping my dissertation will help to inform me with regards to appropriate typography usage as well.
