CARD SET- Occasion Sets Brief NOTE- To tie in with Manchester Print/Book Fair Hallmark cards are out of date, cliché and impersonal. Create a new line of independent celebratory, seasonal, and occasion cards, saleable to a wide audience. Background / Considerations Size, price, method of printing. They need to be able to be sent with a standard stamp, not require special postage. They need to be able to be printed at as low a cost as possible (so as to not make a loss), with no more than one special finish- ie, die cutting or foil blocking. What format does a ʻcardʼ take? Single fold, dual fold, landscape portrait formats? Postcard, ʻblank for your own messageʼ? There is a huge market for greetings cards already. Because 95% of these are simply awful, there is still a market for a new range. Consider traditional uses for such cards, and the lifestyle of the buyer. When considering sales at the Manchester Book Fair, consider the market season, and take this into account when selecting the range. Mandatory Requirements Cards to sell at the Manchester Book Fair in October. Priced at £2.50 or less.

Deliverables Cards ready for sale at Manchester Book Fair. Mid October. Packaged and ready for use, they must be suitable for the audience of other craftspeople, artists, and general public who will be attending. A small range should be created, including cards suitable for at least 3 different purposes.

Studio Deadline Studio Deadline for submission. Deadline for sales- Mid October to coincide with Manchester Book Fair.

TYPOGRAPHY- Daily Drop Cap Brief Drop Caps are used in many different situations. Primarily in editorial content, they function as a leader to bring the viewers eye into the body copy and draw attention to content. Create a whole alphabet of drop caps, each suited to a different purpose. Use these drop caps within an appropriate context, making them functional. Background / Considerations The function of each letter should be considered- is it for a purpose, or to represent the letter itself? Is it purely for decoration, or functional as a part of the text it belongs to? These points need to be considered before developing each letter. A way of organising the letters must be employed. Typographer and designer Jessica Hiche has an on-going project entitled ʻDaily Drop Capʼ, whereby she spends no longer than a day creating a drop cap letter for a specific purpose. She also curates specially commissioned drop caps from other guest professionals for the project, including people such as Marian Bantjes and Darren Booth Follow her example, and do the same for an entire alphabet. For more information: dailydropcap.com

Mandatory Requirements 26 Drop Cap letters, each for an individual purpose. Letters performing a variety of different functionssee ʻconsiderationsʼ- some must be functional, some to beautify, some as a representation of a specific topic, and some to represent the ʻdailyʼ part of being a drop cap.
