I want to stick to analogue drawing processes this year because I have learnt from experience that I really struggle with the process of drawing digitally, especially with vectors. Avoiding this will Rationale allow me to develop my drawing skills further and start to really understand how I work best. Focusing on ink as my primary medium, I hope to experiment with techniques and tools. I need to develop my Photoshop skills for editing scanned imagery created with analogue processes as I tend to use Photoshop t arrange my compositions and piece my images together from separately drawn components. This will allow me to produce professional quality outcomes effectively. I also have a strong interest in pattern and learning how to create repeating designs digitally. I need to be making high quality outcomes that are presented professionally because I need a strong portfolio behind me for when I leave my final year of formal education. This means I will be able to enter the working world with a clear collection of work which really highlights what I am good at and shows it contextualized in a professional format. I need to explore wider applications of my work beyond product ranges, although this is still a fundamental part of my practice. I want to be able to understand more about how and where I Themes / Subjects really see my work existing in the world and make my work more relevant to a wider range of briefs and contexts. It will help me build a portfolio showing a wider range of skills and ways of working. I want to make work that I am proud of because then I will be able to talk about it with confidence and believe it is worth something. This means I will be able to be more professional in my approach to my own work when talking to other people about it and I will have a more positive attitude towards my practice as a whole which is really important. Themes/Subjects Natural forms, plants, animals, food, positivity, seasonal events, occasions (seasonal), greetings, social issues, science, nature, lifestyle. Products/Methods of Distribution Products / Methods of Distribution Paper and fabric products: stationery, gift market, greetings cards, gift wrap, mockups of my designs on physical products. Prints: complete pieces of artwork that exist as stand alone images. Online: sharing imagery on professional social media accounts to build a following, some of my outcomes could be adapted for sale on my Etsy shop. In person: craft/print fairs, face to face selling. Editorial and publishing. Practical Skills/Media/Formats Drawing, experimenting with drawing tools, utilizing my sketchbook, analogue processes, digital editing and enhancement on Photoshop, pattern making, presenting outcomes professionally.
Brief 1 : Harrison Developments Ltd Advent Calendar Design Rationale : Design an advent calendar for Harrison to deliver to their contacts at Christmas. The design should be bold, clean and modern. Brief 2 : Illustrated Facts [not completed] Rationale : Produce an illustration each week in response to a fact about the natural world. Brief 3 : Virgin Media Communication Box Rationale : Propose a design to be painted onto a communication box to brighten up the streets of Headingley, Leeds. The front, top and sides can all be utilised. Brief 4 : The Little Art Collection Rationale : Design some unisex patterns the spring/summer 2017 babywear collection. The theme is hobbies and interests. Brief 5 : Whittard of Chelsea Tea Caddy Rationale : Create a design for a limited edition tea caddy based on the theme ‘A Very Autumnal Halloween’. The caddies will hold either Pumpkin Spice or Toffee Apple tea. Brief 6 : Hallmark/Tigerprint Gifted Rationale : An Instagram competition to create a post including the word ‘gifted’ within it. Brief 7 : We Are Boutique Mural Rationale : Design a ‘white sketchy’ mural for one wall in the main meeting room. The room is called ‘The Fell’ and the building is ‘The Old Saw Mill’. Brief 8 : ‘Out of Order’ Miscommunication Print Rationale : Produce a print relating to ‘Out of Order’ for an exhibition at Colours May Vary. Brief 9 : Papyrus Colouring Book Rationale : Create a double page spread for a colouring book which depicts something that helps you relax. This is for a charity project to tackle stress and anxiety in young adults. Brief 10 : Papyrus Extra Work Rationale : Design a pattern based front and back cover for a colouring book. Design a double page spread with space for the introduction and another double page spread incorporating the helpline number into the design. All content must be along the theme of self-care and relaxation. Brief 11 : Penguin Random House Adult Fiction Award Rationale : Design a book jacket for Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ to appeal to a new generation of readers. Brief 12 : Framework Exhibition Print Rationale : Produce a print for an exhibition at The Old Red Bus Station. The theme is open. Final Major Project – Scandinavian Lifestyle Rationale : Produce a set of editorial illustrations inspired by Scandinavian lifestyle and design. Explore further potential uses of imagery through pattern design and product application.
