The importance of patronage in music is illustrated by this programme. Mozart’s Quartet in B flat, K. 589, was written for King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia, an amateur cellist, while Shostakovich’s quartet is dedicated to Dmitry Tsyganov, the first violinist of the Beethoven Quartet, which premièred the work. Prince Lobkowitz, to whom Beethoven dedicated his first set of quartets, op. 18, was one of the composer’s early patrons. Barber Concert Hall Admission: £12, £9 concessions, £6 Friends, £3 students

The voices (accompanied by sounds and imaginary instruments derived from the voices themselves) are combined with computer animation, speech that waltzes, speech that locks in harmony and clouds of speech that circle the audience, culminating with speech that transforms into song.
