Greater Napanee council settled on its 2017 budget on Tuesday, adopting a staff-recommended total budget of $24,722,531. Town council passed the proposed budget with a unanimous vote. Urban property owners can expect an average increase of 34 cents on their property taxes compared to last year, while their rural counterparts, as part of the four-year phase in of the new tax rate, will see a jump of $73.80 on their 2017 municipal taxes. That’s a 6.8 per cent increase for rural residents. Those numbers are based on the average assessed property value of $235,266. Mark Day, deputy chief administrative officer and treasurer with the town, presented the budget. He broke it down as an operating budget of $18,581,242, and a capital budget of $6,141,289. Nearly two-thirds of the capital budget, $3.9 million, will go towards roads and bridges, both new and ongoing projects. Day says staff was instructed to find as much money as they could to dedicate to roads, which included deferring non-pressing items to next year’s budget.

Work Starts On Accessible Playground Seth DuChene-Staff

Construction crews from Wentworth Landscapes got started at the site of the new accessible playground at Rotary Park on Tuesday, with a number of dignitaries and stakeholders on-hand for the groundbreaking. Flanked by members of the Napanee Rotary Club and others are (in front with shovels, from left) Greater Napanee Mayor Gord Schermerhorn, Deputy-Mayor Marg Isbester, MP Mike Bossio, Rotary Club president Tim Craig and TransCanada community representative Peter Webster. Initially spearheaded by the Rotary Club, the project has since taken on new partners, including the municipality, TransCanada and the Canada 150 community infrastructure program. The total $500,000 project is expected to be completed by early June, in time for the town’s annual Riverfront Festival.

BUDGET | Passed unanimously CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “We are proposing that we are doing a majority of these projects with our own resources and our own staffing,” said Day. “Just outside sources for the recycling of asphalt.” Mayor Gord Schermerhorn agreed that roads will be an important expenditure going forward, and would like to see even more go into it next year.

“The next time we do our budget I would ask that we try to get as much as we can into the street,” said Schermerhorn. “We do not want to fall behind. I’m going to ask all other departments next time, and I know we did it this time, to scrape any money to put into roads.” Day says a decrease in the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund they received left staff searching for ways to make up for those dollars.

In 2012 the town was granted $2.26 million, while this year they’ll get about $1.5 million. “We’ve seen a decrease of almost $700,000 in five years that we’ve had to make up either through taxation or from service charges,” said Day. Prior to adopting the 2017 budget, council held five deliberation meetings to hash out the final numbers.

Skydiggers close out Tamworth concert series

he TamworthErinsville Community Development Committee 2016-17 concert series is going out with a bang. On May 6, the series closes out its season with a performance by Skydiggers, a band that made a name for itself on the Canadian music scene in the 1990s, and have been going strong ever since. Lead singer Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson have been with the band from the ground floor. “We’ve been playing together for over 30 years,” Maize told the Beaver in a telephone interview last week. “I think you’re lucky in life if you meet up with people and the chemistry is right and the attitude is right. Josh is just an easy person to get along with. He’s a positive person, and he loves making music.” Best known for hits ‘I Will Give You Everything’, ‘A Penny More’ and ‘Feel You Closer’, the band has almost

We’re excited about that, it’ll come out in late September or early October.” When asked about the upcoming album, Maize said fans shouldn’t hear much of a departure from what they’ve come to expect from the band. “I think as long as Josh and I are involved in writing together, it will always sound like ‘us’,” he says. “We’re not reinventing the wheel here, we’re just going to write the best songs that we can and present them in the best way possible… It’s pretty straight-up Skydiggers, melodic songs.” Photo by Heather Pollock Those in attendance at (From left) Andy Maize, Jessy Bell Smith and Josh next month’s show might hear some of those newest Finlayson of Skydiggers. songs, Maize says, as well as 20 albums and several a new recording, as a matter selections from their most Canadian music awards to of fact,” he said. “We started recent album, Here Without its credit — including one in February and we’ve been You, which features rendiworking away with Michael tions of songs from famed Juno Award. songwriter Gene Clark. He says they’ll also play “stuff from throughout the catalogue. We’re lucky now, we have quite an extensive back catalogue to choose from.” Maize and Finlayson will be joined by vocalist Jessy Bell Smith and “multiinstrumentalist” Aaron Comeau. “We’ll be doing more of an acoustic performance, because it’s a smaller venue,” he said.

As for playing those smaller rooms, Maize says it’s something he enjoys. “It just seems more personal,” he says. “I’ve always liked playing smaller venues. I guess I’ve always felt more of a connection in those shows. They’re a little more casual than if you’re playing a big outdoor festival. I like being able to see the whites of people’s eyes.” Those interested in tickets ($40) can call 613-3792808.

The elephant in the bed Not too long before he eventually became prime minister, Brian Mulroney uttered these words: “Free trade with the United States is like sleeping with an elephant. It’s terrific until the elephant twitches, and if the elephant rolls over, you are a dead man.” Of course, after he became prime minister, his thinking changed — and his government spearheaded the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement. Although it always had its detractors, those in opposition to free trade with the U.S., and later with Mexico under the North American Free Trade Agreement, have generally found themselves, decidedly, in the minority. The Liberal Party, who fought tooth-and-nail against the Free Trade deal in 1988, came to embrace it, and even help to expand it by bringing NAFTA into being. More than 30 years after Mulroney’s warning, we here in Canada are starting to really feel the ‘elephant effect’, and it is new President Donald Trump who’s making it twitch. And things seemed to be going so well. Sure, Trump ran a campaign that demonized NAFTA as an American job- and economy-killer — but that was just Mexico, right? Plus, he met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just a few months ago and, despite obvious differences between the two men, they seemed to have found something resembling an understanding. Canada-US trade was going to continue much the same way it always had. That wishful thinking all but evaporated last week when, first, President Trump lobbed a few verbal salvos against Canada’s dairy industry and lumber industry (two sectors, it’s important to note, that aren’t covered under NAFTA). Just a few days ago, trade grumblings escalated into a real ‘shooting war’ situation when the Americans slapped a new tariff on softwood lumber entering the US. Talk of layoffs in the lumber industry on this side of the border has already begun as a result. (There’s also some complaining south of the border about the rising cost of construction materials there because of the tariffs — but those voices don’t seem to be particularly influential with the current administration.) The twitching extended to the Canadian dairy sector; that twitching has also revived the debate over the dairy industry’s supply management system, which always seems to be a bone of contention when it comes to trading relationships not only with the US but other countries as well. Dairy farmers in this area are undoubtedly watching with great interest. Trump — desperate for some ‘wins’ after several notable setbacks over the past several weeks on the domestic front — no doubt sees Canada as an easy target. With an economy one-tenth the size of the American economy, Canada certainly fits that bill. It’s a reminder — and a potentially devastating reminder for many — of Mulroney’s proverbial twitchy elephant.

Coming your way in May Looking for something new and exciting to read? Consider reserving one of the following titles, due out in May, from CountyLibrary.ca. New Boy by Tracy Chevalier is part of Hogarth’s Shakespeare series, in which popular contemporary authors take their turns adapting Shakespeare’s famous plays. Margaret Atwood’s Hag-Seed and Anne Tyler’s Vinegar Girl are also part of this series. In New Boy, Chevalier tries her hand at crafting a new version of Othello. Set in suburban Washington, DC during the 1970s,

Catherine Coles Coles Notes this Othello takes place over the course of a single day in a Grade 6 classroom/playground. We meet Osei “O” Kokote, the son of a diplomat from Ghana. He is quickly the talk of the playground, not only because he is the new kid, but also because he is black in an entirely white school and moreover, he’s African — not like anyone else his classmates have encountered. He very quickly earns

the interest and affection of Dee, a sweet girl who goes out of her way to befriend him. However, a nasty and conniving boy (Ian) decides to put a plan in motion to destroy their relationship – with tragic consequences. While it didn’t seem entirely plausible that 6th-grade children would act as they were portrayed in this story, it’s clear that Chevalier intended it this way. After all, from a sixth grader’s perspective, a single day could have all of the drama and spectacle of a Shakespearean tragedy.

Letter to the Editor

Many hands make light Earth Day work The Good Friends of the Earth Napanee completed their part toward EarthDay’s ‘billion acts of green’ worldwide in a huge way on last Saturday. They came out in numbers never seen before. One fella marveled at the lineup of high-spirited trash bashers volunteering their Saturdays. Who were these ‘Good Friends’? They are the Beavers, Dave Pinnell’s Century 21 group, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, OPP, Laurie Snider’s Greenlights, McDonalds crew, Valerie Ireland’s AMHS-KFLA crew, church groups, the Women’s Institute and Greater Napanee Emergency Services who have always teamed up with us. Bravo to Grace United Church who took over top spot with numbers and enthusiasm among the churches by tangibly revealing their feeling about The Creator’s Earth. Mostly what has to be

mentioned is the individuals — way too many to list — who come out every year and donate their time and efforts toward making Napanee’s surroundings more pleasant. There are always moments that seem to stand out, and Sue Carrington — who kept The Prince Charles School in first among the schools — filled bags of trash as she moved around the Highway 401 ramp ditches in a walking cast from a recent break. Bill and Sheryl Cook rendered the swamp area along County Road 41 below Roblin natural and pristine once again as they trudged through mud and water up to their knees. Soiled diapers and plastic bottles full of urine are some of the nasty items collected. One wonders what goes on inside the heads of the weak-minded who would discard such items roadside knowing it is their nice neighbors who collect it. Is it really that difficult to locate trash cans?

We always have to point out the tireless efforts of Gary Holmes who reveals a great sense of pride in his town by keeping the County Road 2 west entrance to Napanee tidy, thus providing a wonderful first impression for visitors. It was moving to see a crew out representing the late Mary Anne Pringle who was a devoted participant. It was special to see participation by MP Mike Bossio, councillors Marg Isbester Roger Cole and Carol Harvey who obviously follow the axiom that ‘actions speak louder that words.’ We must offer a special thanks to the ‘Manco’ bunch who donated their Saturday and their equipment travelling around Greater Napanee collecting the many bags and other trash. And of course we couldn’t exist without the generous donations from our sponsors who do so much to make it happen that we’d require a

half-page to mention it all. Our major sponsors are Beebe’s Home Hardware, Bob Annett’s Tim Hortons, Jamie and Jacklyn’s No Frills, Hoyt Botly’s Wendy’s Restaurant, Ryan Moore’s Hart ’n Hart, Dan Doyle's McDonalds Restaurant, Kevin Thiessen’s Canadian Tire, Manco Recycling Systems, Sirin Angasinha’s Shoppers Drug Mart, Ray Virgin’s Giant Tiger and Tim and Trisha McKenzie’s G.E.T. Drilling. Kudos to our other supporters Denny’s , Domino’s, Flying J, Harvey’s, Novelis Kingston, Mr. Chips Fish and United Restaurant Deseronto. Thanks to MyFM and all the various departments of the Town Of Greater Napanee who once again provided great team work. Earth Day is every day. Barry Robinson, Good Friends of The Earth

‘Whatever will be, will be..’ The song-writing duo of Jay Livingston and Ray Evans had already set famous precedents when they collaborated to compose ‘Que Sera Sera’ in 1954. Their ‘Buttons and Bows’ created for Bob Hope’s Son of Paleface in 1948 (which carted off the Academy Award for Best Original Song), and ‘Mona Lisa’, which was penned for the 1950 flick, Captain Carey, U.S.A., paved the way for the use of this classic ditty, featured in The Man Who Knew Too Much. The seed thoughts stemmed from Livingstone’s catching sight of these words being carved in stone in a European ancestral castle. He immediately

jotted them down as a possible song title, and shared it with Evans. The latter, in turn, utilized its Spanish flavour as he fleshed out the idea in the lyrics now so well known.

Ashley signs up and to her surprise is selected for the boot camp. Naturally, it turns out that the challenges are a bit more than she bargained for. While Ashley’s woe-is-me attitude gets a bit tedious at times, and the premise of this book is way over the top, it was nonetheless an amusing, addictive read. It is very Bridget Joneslike, both in its blog/diary format and in its narrator’s self-deprecating humour. Ashley, formerly a success career woman, is currently a full-time mom to little Aubrey. Constantly comparing herself to put-together moms in real life and on social media, she feels like she is failing her family by not measuring up – until one day she stumbles upon a serendipitous contest. Glen R. Goodhand Musical Memories Further investigation by the pair revealed that ‘Que Sera Sera’ was the maxim of the Dukes of Bedford, struck in 1749; and, was also the motto of an

English coat of arms dating back to 1865. When director Alfred Hitchcock presented the piece to leading lady, Doris Day, she was anything but pleased. She favoured another vocal highlight, ‘We’ll Love Again’, but determined that ‘Que Sera Sera’ was nothing more than a children’s tune, and she refused to perform it in the film. That is hardly surprising since Hitchcock actually was searching for the kind of number which a mother would sing to a child.

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 65 Years Ago April 23, 1952 ■ The advent of new, modern transportation was there for the eye to see — as long as you happened to look up. Some local residents told the Beaver that they saw the vapor trail created by a fast-moving jet airplane. According to the report on the front page of the newspaper, “the men, who were working near the riverfront, noticed a streak of vapor materializing in the clear eastern sky and quickly picked up the aircraft travelling west at a terrific speed, leaving a trail of vapor from horizon to horizon.” ■ With the weather getting warmer, Napanee saw a sure sign of spring and summer: the first load of coal being delivered to town via the Napanee River. The tug the Salvage Prince opened up navigation in the river when it towed the barge Hilda loaded with coal for the Napanee Fuel and Supply Company. The barge was loaded with about 1,000 tons of coal. The captain of the tug, George Bates, was presented with a hat by H.W. Vine.

35 Years Ago April 28, 1982 ■ A $110-million contract to supply the City of Detroit with new mass transit vehicles was expected to have a big economic impact on this area. The Urban Transportation Development Corporation, based in Ernestown, won the contract to supply the Central Automated Transit System for Detroit; the ‘turnkey’ agreement called for UTDC to build and equip the 4.6 kilometre CATS loop that would connect office, shopping and recreational centres in downtown Detroit. Passenger service on the new transit system was expected to begin in 1985. ■ Three families were left at least temporarily homeless following a fire at a multi-unit complex in Deseronto. The fire, which started in the early-morning hours, gutted the internal structure of a twostorey brick building on St. George Street and Highway 2. It took about a dozen firefighters more than four hours to bring the fire completely under control. The fire began in one of the units after some food was left unattended on a stove. Luckily, all the occupants of the building escaped without injury. The total damage was estimated to be $40,000 to $50,000.

NOTICE OF STUDY COMMENCEMENT Highway 33 Industrial Park Bridge Rehabilitation (WP 4066-14-01) Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study THE STUDY The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has retained MMM Group, a WSP company, to undertake the Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study for the rehabilitation of the Industrial Park Bridge in the Town of Greater Napanee. The bridge was originally constructed in 1972 and was rehabilitated in 1997. The existing structure has experienced deterioration and requires major rehabilitation to ensure long-term safe access of Highway 33. Traffic will be managed by rehabilitating the bridge in two stages while maintaining a single lane across the bridge controlled by temporary traffic signals. The rehabilitation work is currently scheduled for 2018 and is anticipated to last one construction season. Construction timing is dependent on the completion of the Class Environmental Assessment Study and approvals.

could do this huge thing, maybe we could do something smaller; not necessarily create jobs, but at least produce food,” said Beebe. So far, she has three ‘takers’ for the Gardens to Go: the Morningstar Mission, the Napanee Salvation Army and L&A Interval House. She’s also in talks to bring the boxes to other parts of the town — easily accessible to both those who would harvest some of the veggies and those who would volunteer to care for the garden. Beebe said that anyone can help maintain a Garden to Go, and anyone can help themselves to the veggies they produce. Beebe says it’s a bit of an expansion from something CIB tried last year; some vegetables were planted in some of the large flower planters placed around town. “We had some Swiss chard along Centre

Street, and there was some celery and different things, and people were eating it. That kind of maybe put a little spark under the idea, that it might work,” she said. Beebe says it builds on the work of other community-based gardens that operate in town. Further, she says it fits in nicely with Community in Bloom’s mandate and goals. “Communities in Bloom is about communities, not just flowers,” she said. “It’s really an opportunity to showcase what your community has and how you’re community-minded and the things that you do for each other… I think that’s really important, especially in a small town.” Those interested in the program can contact Beebe at marsha.beebe@homehardware.ca or 613-3543315.

Earth Day is every day I’ve just returned from the annual town cleanup. My back and knees are aching and I’ve got mud splatters all over my best compression socks from stepping in a rather sloppy ditch. It’s all good though — I was in the spirit. How could I not be? There were many others just like me, young to old, also outside on this cool, damp April morning pitching in. We were outfitted with gloves, sticks and garbage bags galore, stooping and bending in earnest to pick up the unwanted allotment of discarded refuse from our otherwise beautiful town. It is Earth Day today. I think that it is wonderful that for at least one day each year, the nations of the world come together to celebrate this spectacular planet we call home. I don’t believe for a minute, however, that this should be limited to just one day. Indeed, every day should be Earth Day! The very first Earth day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. A U.S. senator, Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin, was upset after witnessing the devastating effects of a massive oil spill off of Santa Barbara, California. At the time there was a great deal of anti-war sentiment. He decided to tap into this energy, hoping to channel it into proactive action for the planet. Twenty million Ameri-

cans, from all stripes and vance in the world, celebratstars, attended the first ed by over one billion people. They aren’t whiney folks but rather a jolly, enthusiastic crowd, happily donating their time on a Saturday morning. Their decision to spruce up our town, making it safer for people and wildlife is appreciated, is important and it matters. This is a clear demonstration, that people care and are willing to step up and take action. I find that inspiring. A friend picking up trash in the ditch beside me told me of an acquaintance of his that was also out this morn-

ing, doing her part. She was doing this, however, wearing a cast on her leg! She was deciding to make a positive difference. I find her inspiring. In countries all over the world today, people gathered in a March for Science. These were peaceful rallies, where citizens decided to come together to express the opinion, that scientific facts matter. Our scientists gather data, test theories and back up their findings with peer reviewed studies and they should be listened

to. I find them inspiring too. Without a doubt, the news can be bleak and overwhelming but there are also many reasons for hope optimism and inspiration, if we choose to see them. All over the world and in many cities and towns in Canada today, this was very apparent. When groups of dedicated people gather together, united in a cause for good, an awful lot can be accomplished. Well done, Good Friends of the Earth Napanee. Well done!

Just when it was looking like Napanee wouldn’t be holding a Relay For Life fundraiser this year, the town’s youth stepped up to save the day. Napanee’s teenaged generation will take up the fight against cancer this year as Napanee District Secondary School students will host both a Hawk Walk and Relay For Life fundraising event on May 31. NDSS student Shalisa Barton has taken the lead on organizing both events, which will raise money for cancer research. The day will start with the third annual Hawk Walk, which will see a large portion of the student body depart from the high school at 11 a.m. and march to downtown Napanee. Along the way they’ll collect donations from anyone willing to donate a few dollars to their cause. Once they reach the centre of downtown they’ll perform a mob flash dance. Money they collect will go towards the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research Sunnybrook Foundation. Later that day from 3 to 7 p.m. students will begin walking laps around the high school track for Relay For Life. “We’re hoping that we’ll have 300 to 400 students participating,” said Hart of the Relay For Life walk. “That would be the ultimate goal.” That turnout would represent about one third of the school’s student population. Using her experience with organizing events gained from her time in Odessa’s Challenge Program, she’s been busy planning the event for the last couple of months. “Right now we’re focusing on getting

sponsors and inviting (cancer) survivors from the community,” said Hart. Any local businesses looking to sponsor the school’s Relay For Life event can email ShalisaBaton@outlook.com or call 613-8886307. The same goes for any local cancer survivors who would like to take part in the event to provide inspiration, starting with the always powerful survivor’s lap around the track. For Hart, getting involved was an easy decision. After teacher Lisa McGowan brought it to the school’s attention that the Canadian Cancer Society was looking for volunteers to take up the torch of their biggest fundraising event on the local level, she was quick to raise her hand. “Almost three years ago I had an aunt diagnosed with cancer, she’s stage four now,” said Hart. “Just a year ago I had an uncle who was diagnosed with stage four cancer. I’ve had an uncle who I lost a few years ago, there are a lot of family ties there.” She knows that many of her peers have had similar experiences with the deadly disease touching their family as well. “(Cancer) affects everyone,” said Hart. “That’s a big thing we’re using to promote it. There’s no way you don’t know someone who has had cancer so it’s really relatable to everyone so that’s what we’re hoping to use to empower other students to take part in this event and help us towards our goal.” During the walk they hope to have prizes and games to help keep it fun while helping an important cause. Money raised from the event will go to the Canadian Cancer Society. Anyone looking to sponsor team of students can donate by logging onto www.RelayForLife.ca/NapaneeDSS.

Annual Yarker cleanup gets high-profile boost BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Renowned Canadian environmentalist Maude Barlow was in Yarker on Saturday, joining some 30 volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and collected trash sprawled throughout the village as part of Saturday’s annual Earth Day clean up. A well known author and environmental activist, Barlow is the National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians, co-founder of the Blue Planet Project and was a leader in the campaign to have water recognized as a human right by the United Nations. She holds 12 honourary doctorates as has earned dozens of awards including the 2009 Earth Day Outstanding Environmental Achievement Award. Visiting her sister on Saturday she opted to get involved with the trash removal, particularly along the shores of the Napanee River. “It’s really important,” Barlow said of getting involved. “We’re going to be doing some work on the Napanee River and I have a

very strong feeling about the waterways in Canada. I really want Canadians to stop taking our water for granted. I want us to stop thinking about the myth of abundance. We don’t have so much water that we can waste it. We do not have adequate laws. The last government, the Harper government, gutted our three most important water laws and we’re asking the Trudeau government to reinstate them. Canadians have to get involved. This is a heritage we’ve been lucky enough to be born into or invited to, really for us to take it for granted and pollute it and throw all our junk and all our toxins into it is a sin.” Among her 17 published works is a book titled Boiling Point: Government Neglect, Corporate Abuse and Canada’s Water Crisis. In it she writes of how dangerous it could be if Canadians don’t take care of their fresh water. “It’s really important to remember that the world is running out of clean water,” said Barlow. “The UN says that by 2075 as many as seven billion people could be living without adequate access to clean water. There’s

a study that just came out last week by the World Health Organization that says two billion people have to drink contaminated water. 2.5 billion don’t have sanitation. We have to remember that we’re lucky to live in country like this. We’re lucky to live in Ontario and in a community that has access to clean water.” After the cleanup, the volunteers met at Yarker’s Free

Methodist Church, where Barlow had a brief presentation. “Part of this is cleaning the river, but part of this is education,” Barlow said of her visit. “It’s really nice to have kids learning how important it is to take responsibility. When you work on a cleanup like this you realize a lot of people just see water as a big garbage dump. That’s got to change.”

Canada’s women’s rugby sevens robbed of gold Britt Benn scores in historic victory over AUS

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

last second try by New Zealand’s national rugby team was enough for the Black Ferns to snatch gold from the hands of Canada’s women at the HSBC Kitakyushu Sevens, held this weekend in Japan. The late try put New Zealand up 17-14, to deny Napanee’s Britt Benn and her Canadian teammates their second tournament win of the World Series. Canada had led 7-0 early in the gold medal game and held a 14-12 advantage down to the dying seconds but just

A

couldn’t hold on against their rivals. Canada reached the finals on the strength of a 50 record at the tournament, including a 33-0 victory over the same Australian club that bested them at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio, forcing them to settle for bronze. Sunday’s victory was the largest ever for over the Australians in the Canadian program’s history. Benn chipped in on offense, running in a try. The victory also marked Canada’s 100th overall triumph in World Series play. In the semifinals they were all over Fiji, securing a 21-0 victory to earn their eighth finals appearance in

the program’s history. They are 3-5 lifetime in gold medal games. Along with this weekend’s second place finish, Benn’s Canadians have also recorded a first place finish in Sydney, third in Las Vegas and sixth in Dubai, placing them third in the season standings. New Zealand and Australia lead the way with 76 and 66 points respectively. Canada sports 64 points, 14 up on fourth place Fiji. Next up on the six tour stop is a homecoming, where Canada will host in Langley B.C. May 27-28. That’s where Canada’s national program holds its training facility.

Local boxer to make Ont. debut May 13 Jay Kelly part of six card event in Peterborough BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

apanee’s Jay Kelly will bring his comeback tour to Peterborough on May 13, when he steps into the boxing ring to take on Jay Corcoran. The fight will be Kelly’s fourth fight since he returning to boxing following a four year hiatus due to a back injury suffered during a game of hockey. Once told he’d never fight again, he has worked his way all the way back to the pro-circuit. Last August he was given medical clearance to resume boxing and he quickly got back to work. A one time semi-pro MMA fighter in B.C., he’s now solely focused on boxing. His previous three fights being stateside, he’s

N

looking forward to his Canadian debut. Because the fight is taking place on Corcoran’s home turf, Kelly expects it to be an intense affair. “Fighting in Peterborough will be amazing,” Kelly said in a release. “We’re taking the Peterborough-Napanee rivalry into a pro boxing ring for the first time. I’m Napanee’s first pro fighter so it’s a big deal for our small town.” After three fights in the U.S., Kelly is considering the May 13 fight a homecoming for him aswell. Kelly’s comeback hasn’t quite gone as expected, losing his first three matches in U.S. “He should be ready for war because I ain’t losing anymore fights,” said Kelly. “I belong at the top.”

Kelly’s hoping the fight will help build more support for boxing and MMA in Napanee. “There is a buzz around the sport now, I think live boxing will only increase interest in the sport here,” added Kelly. The fight will be part of a six card event, which is being hosted by Ontario’s United Boxing Promotions. It will take place at Peterborough’s Memorial Centre. When he’s not boxing, Kelly is a co-owner of Diamond Fitness. He’ll be hosting a live all female MMA event on June 24 at Napanee’s Memorial Arena. It’ll be the first of its kind to be held in Canada. Along with his boxing career, he’s hoping to bring more live MMA events to Napanee in the near future.

NDSS Golden Hawks’ Tiana Snow holds off a tackle just long enough to slide over the try line during Thursday’s KASAA season opening game against the Regi Panthers, held in Napanee.

Rugby Hawks display potent offense Girls team open KASSAA season with emphatic win BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

ix different Golden Hawks players crossed the try line on Thursday as NDSS girls’ rugby team opened their KASSAA season with a 39-0 rout of the visiting Regi Panthers. Jackie Campbell, Anna Murphy, Olivia Fenwick, Summer Kimmett, Tiana Snow and Charlotte Elliott all scored at least once for the home team while Snow kicked two converts. The Hawks wasted little time finding their offense as they scored early and often. Using a balanced attack and spinning the ball out wide to find open spaces,

S

they were able to move up the field at a steady pace and take advantage of the inexperienced Panthers’ backline. On more than one occasion the Hawks were able to return a kickoff for another quick try. Once the floodgates opened the Hawks were unstoppable, offloading the ball quickly to an open teammate and creating a lot of open spaces along the side lines to gain quick yards and set up another try. Leading 23-0 at the half the Hawks were able to rotate their players and allow a lot of their players to get their first game action early in the season, which could prove beneficial in the short season.

There was little drop off in talent however as the Hawks continued to dominate the game in the second half. The few times they didn’t have the ball, the Hawks were able to shut down Regi’s running game quickly as they never really threatened to cross their try line. Any Regi attempt was quickly shutdown by a strong front line defense from the Hawks, who kept the Panthers from getting the ball out wide all match. Despite being the first game of the season, the Hawks looked in midseason form as they look to repeat last season’s success and return to the finals.

Late goal not enough for NDSS Sr. girls soccer Soccer season reaches mid point BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

pair of early goals proved to be too much for the NDSS Golden Hawks senior girls soccer team to overcome on Friday as they fell 2-1 to the visiting Ernestown Eagles. A corner kick followed by another strike put the Eagles up 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the game. Napanee would settle in from there, but spent the rest of the game trying to dig out of the early hole. Their persistence paid off late in the game when Izzy Waymer’s shot rebounded off the Eagles keeper and right to the foot of Haley Burke, who booted it home. That was all the scoring they’d muster however, despite creating their share of chances throughout the second half in particular. “The girls really took what we were talking about at the half and they improved as a team, including passing to open spaces,” said Hawks coach Nikki Salvisburg. “They seemed to have really done that a lot better in the second half.” Despite falling behind quickly, the Hawks still battled and came close to at least notching a tie on several drives. “I think we have a lot to work on in practice but even just for the girls’ confidence to have multiple shots in the second half, to start the season off that’s a victory in itself, said Salvisburg following Friday’s game. Unfortunately for Napanee they weren’t able to

HAWKS | Jr. boys lose to HC CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Following the game both teams held an exhibition match for their junior aged players who might not see as much action on the varsity squad. Both programs are hoping to build up the junior divisions this year and continue to feed quality players into the senior level squads to help sustain a high level of competition each year, rather than having some schools go through a bit of a down turn when their stronger players graduate. Napanee’s offense was still rolling in their second game, as they steamrolled the Ernestown Eagles 46-0 for a road victory to improve to 2-0. They could face a real test on tomorrow when they welcome the Holy Cross Crusaders for a 4 p.m. show-

down. The Crusaders will come into the game with a 1-1 record after beating the Eagles to open the season and then losing a 10-7 game to Sydenham. On Tuesday the Hawks will travel to Kingston to take on the KCVI Blues. NDSS’ junior boys rugby teams got their season underway on Tuesday, opening with a tough 22-5 road defeat at the hands of the Crusaders. They’ll look to even their record tomorrow afternoon when they hit the road to face the Frontenac Falcons. On Tuesday they will host their first home game of the season, taking on the KCVI Blues. The seniors meanwhile will see their first KASSAA league action tomorrow when they travel to Frontenac. On Tuesday they will welcome the KCVI Blues for a friendly match.

That dropped them to 0-3 at the midway point of the season. They’ll look to get into the win column on Monday when they travel to LCVI. NDSS’ junior girls are also searching for their first win of the season after they dropped a 2-0 gae to Ernestown on Friday. They are now 0-2 on the year. They’ll take on Sydenham this afternoon on the road. It was a similar result for the boys teams, who lost to Sydenham at home on Monday afternoon. The jun-

Maria, Maria. They call the wind Maria, away out here they got a name, for rain and wind and fire, the rain is Tess, the fire Joe and they call the wind Maria. Maria blows the stars around and sends the clouds a ’flyin’, Maria makes the mountains sound like folks were up there dying. Maria, Maria. They call the wind Maria, before I knew Maria’s name and heard her wail and whinin’. I had a girl and she had me and the sun was always shinin’. But then one day I left my girl, I left her far behind me and now I’m lost, so gone and lost, not even God can find me. Maria, Maria. They call the wind Maria, out here they got a name, for rain, for wind and fire only. But when you’re lost and all alone, there ain’t no word but lonely and I’m a lost and lonely man, without a star to guide me. Maria blow my love to me. I need my girl beside me. Maria, Maria. They call the wind Maria. Maria, Maria! Blow my love to me.

Greater Napanee’s Hometown Market will launch its outdoor season on May 13, running bi-weekly through Sept. 30. Vendors will set up shop in Napanee’s market square every other Saturday, offering products such as art, crafts, soaps, clothes, jewellery and food. All items for sale will be either handmade or homegrown. “It’s been successful and something we look forward to every year, said Lyndsay Tee, Economic Development Co-ordinator for Greater Napanee. “The market vendor returners are very excited to get this season started and we’ve got some new people onboard that are excited to get involved. As with previous years, each week’s market will have a theme to help encourage families to get out and visit the square.

“On May 13 we’re celebrating the start of a new season with tons of activities, said Tee. “We have lots of vendors then we’ll have horse-drawn wagon rides, face painting, barbecue and live music. It all happens rain or shine. Local musician Barry Lovegrove will provide the entertainment for the first market of the season. Other themes on the schedule include a horticultural society plant sale, the Riverfront Festival, Canada’s 150th birthday, Napanee Fair, tie dye, back-to-school and the Scarecrow Festival. Tee says she is now accepting vendors who wish to sign up for both the entire season or just as a casual vendor. A season long commitment is $110, which breaks down to $10 per market. A casual vendor can pick and choose which dates they’d like to set up shop, for a cost of $15 per market they attend. For more information contact Ltee@greaternapanee.com or by calling 613-354-3351 ext. 2017.

MUSICAL FROM PAGE 9 However, according to the powers-that-be, it was the key number in the presentation, and they insisted she co-operate. She reluctantly gave in, and, according to a studio head, she completed it in one take. Then, when she had finished she snapped, “That’s the last time you’ll ever hear that song!” She couldn’t have been more mistaken. For one thing it won the Academy Award for the Best Original Song in 1956, and was the No. 7 song on the Bill Board’s ‘Hot 100’ for that year. It eventually became known as her ‘signature song’, which she utilized as the theme for her sitcom television programme from 1968 through 1973. A couple of sidelights relate to the song’s history —

In Northern Ireland, during the 1990 World Cup, “We’re going to It-a-ly” rang the changes. The other connects with an insurance company commercial in Thailand. A children’s’ choir — first featuring young girls, then their male counterparts — gave a beautiful rendition of the piece. Then, in a brief conclusion, the company made its pitch. Connie Francis, Alvin and The Chipmunks, and the Beatles, were others who

latched onto the success of the popular hit. When I was just a little girl I asked my mother what I will be. Will I be pretty; will I be rich? Here’s what she said to me: Que sera, sera Whatever will be will be, The future’s not ours to see, Que sera sera. When I grew up and fell in love, I asked my sweetheart, what lies ahead? Will we have rainbows, day after day? Here’s what my sweetheart said. Now I have children of my own, They ask their mother, what will I be? Will I be handsome, will I be rich? I tell them tenderly.
