A 25-year-old Belleville man is facing first degree murder and other charges in connection with the death of a Tyendinaga Mohawk First Nation Territory resident. According to a press release issued by the OPP, the Tyendinaga Police Service received a 911 call at 3:19 a.m. on Sunday morning regarding a male injured at a residence on Deserontyon Drive. Kenneth Ferrill, 43, had sustained a gunshot wound; he was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Brandon Philip George Baptiste, 25, of Belleville, has been charged with first degree murder, pointing a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm. He made his first appearance on Monday at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville; he was remanded back into custody and was to appear in court again today. The Napanee OPP Crime Unit and Tyendinaga Police Service, under the direction of Detective Inspector Rob Matthews of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, are continuing with the investigation. Specialized units from the OPP also assisting included the Forensic Identification Services Unit, the Tactics and Rescue Unit and the Emergency Response Team. According to Dr. Tom Touzel, one of the local family doctors participating with the program, the new clinic isn’t geared to be a replacement for cases typically seen by the emergency room. “We are there to provide care for things that we would usually see in our offices, (things like) blood pressure checks, colds and flu, minor musculoskeletal injuries, cuts and bruises. cine focus,” he said. “Visits are short, booked every 10 minutes, so that we can keep the we can keep the wait times short and see the volume of people who need to be seen,” he added. Dr. Touzel says clinic staff will also refill prescriptions, but won’t refill opiates or tranquilizer prescriptions. The clinic also has full access to lab and digital diagnostic services, but it’s unlikely that the cases they’d typically deal with at the clinic would require those services very often, he added. The clinic is available to people who are patients of a local family doctor or anyone who lives in Lennox and Addington County or Deseronto. “Patients can come to the clinic as early as 4:30 p.m. and register, and they can either wait for an appointment or alternatively can book a same-day appointment and return at the specified time and be seen,” Dr. Touzel said. He noted that doctors have access to medical

records through the hospital’s computer system, so family doctors are automatically updated when their patients attend the clinics. Now five weeks into the pilot, LACGH Chief of Staff Dr. Kim Morrison says it’s so far, so good. She said a patient satisfaction survey given to outgoing patients suggests that 95 per cent of those who attend the clinic are happy with the service they’ve been provided. “(It’s showing) that patients are exceptionally happy with the service, and there are positive comments,” she said. When asked whether she thought the clinic would be extended past its threemonth trial, Dr. Morrison said, “I’m hoping there’s support to continue it. We’ve identified that there are lots of patients that don’t have a primary care provider, and this is addressing that need. It’s addressing the need for after-hours access to primary care, which doesn’t really exist in another form. And, hopefully, it’s taking pressure

off of our ER. With all those things… I’m really hoping it will continue in some form or another.” She said it’s too early to tell whether the clinic is diverting cases away from the ER. “Certainly, our primary goal is access to patients and access to care, and that’s being met. If it means that some of those things that really don’t need to be seen in the ER don’t have to be, then that’s success to us,” she said. “The hospital has been very supportive of the idea and provided the clinic space and administrative and IT support,” said Dr. Touzel. “The hospital truly is the hub of health care in the region and this clinic maintains that focal point; plus, the parking is free, and it is well-known as a place of good care and comfort in our community.” Other local doctors participating in the program include Dr. Jeff Sloan, Dr. Liz Touzel, Dr. Kim Morrison, Dr. Carl Lee, Dr. Sonal Patel, Dr. Crystal Gonu and Dr. Aaron McGregor.

Tamworth-area garden among top 150 in Canada

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

National judges have deemed Tamworth’s SpindleTree Gardens a must-see this summer, listing it a ‘Canada 150 Garden Experience’ to coincide with the country’s sesquicentennial. A 20-acre green space packed with a variety of flora, SpindleTree Gardens

is noted for its unique architecture and for housing several rare plant breeds. Susan Meisner, who owns and operates the gardens with her husband Tom Brown, says the layout of the property is what makes it stand out from a typical garden. Originally, she had no intention of opening up their garden to the public and therefore didn’t agonize over the arrangement, but rather just planted what she liked.

That’s made for some interesting and unpredictable combinations scattered throughout the grounds. “There’s lots to do, it’s a nice afternoon out,” said Meisner of touring the grounds. “People are pretty intrigued, especially gardeners who have a bit of experience and know what they’re looking at. Otherwise it’s just a nice, pretty place to walk around and restore your soul. And the

kids like it because there’s snakes and frogs and wildlife and the maze.” The designation could prove to be a boost for local tourism, as they’re the only Canada 150 Garden Experience named in all of eastern Ontario. “The scale, variety and design of plant material and architectural pieces create a beautiful setting that is both striking and elegant,” said Mark Oliver, Chair of the Tamworth-Erinsville Community Development Committee. “SpindleTree Gardens provides a unique facility in our community through unrivalled and cap-

tivating natural and constructed features that have been massaged to as close to perfection as Mother Nature will allow through the expertise and vision of the owners, Tom and Susie.” Though the addition to the Canada 150 Garden Experience list wasn’t unveiled until last month, Meisner was already hard at work putting a patriotic flare to this year’s garden. “We planted a pile of red and white tulips to celebrate Canada’s birthday this year,” she said. “We’ve planted more bulbs out there as well so it should be really pretty in the spring.

This year we have a huge number of clematis that we’re going to be planting to finish our clematis wall. We’ve replaced the honeysuckle hedge and replaced it with man-made trellises up at the rock garden and the lilac garden.” Those changes, along with the garden’s natural refreshing cycle, means even those who have visited before will see something new this summer. SpindleTree will open its doors for the season on May 14, which also happens to be Mother’s Day. It’s located at 6248 County Rd. 4 in Tamworth.

Olympic disappointment The reaction to learning that Canada’s best hockey players wouldn’t be participating in the 2018 Winter Olympics was predictably, and in many ways justifiably, negative. Indeed, it’s difficult to come up with a silver lining (no pun intended) to this latest development — difficult, though not impossible. First, let’s talk about why this decision stinks. It’s a gutpunch to anyone who enjoys watching hockey being played at its absolute highest level. Sure, we can still get that whenever there’s a World Cup, but it’s just not the same as when it’s taking place at the Olympics. It had become the pinnacle of international hockey from the moment the ‘experiment’ began back in 1998. Now it’s gone. Given that Canada’s won three Olympic gold medals in men’s ice hockey since then, you can really understand why we Canadians aren’t taking this news very well. But this is sentimentality and emotionalism. From a purely business standpoint, it just makes sense for the NHL (that is, the league and team owners) to want to take a pass, right? Well, even on that score, it doesn’t seem like an openand-shut case. The International Ice Hockey Federation has stated that it would cover costs relating to transporting the players, providing accommodation for the players and (most importantly) paying any insurance costs relating to NHL player participation in the Olympic games. Although there would be a two-and-a-half week break in NHL action, there’d be the same number of games (82). It doesn’t appear as though NHL owners would be out-of-pocket. Further, we can think of no better showcase for the NHL than having its best players compete in the Olympics. That’s where you pick up potential new fans on this grand international stage. Like all things relating to professional sports, however, it does come down to financial considerations. It appears as though the NHL was looking for a sweeter deal from the IIHF and the International Olympic Committee in terms of sponsorship; or (even more cynically), they might be using the Olympics as a bargaining chip in the next round of contract negotiations with the NHL players (which Canadian Olympian and Chicago Blackhawk Jonathan Toews has hinted at this week; he and most other NHL players were eager to go back to the Olympics). It all adds up to a thumb in the eye of hockey fans, and no small measure of bad publicity for the NHL. We have a very hard time understanding how this is good for business. So where’s the silver lining? Well, that takes us back to what the Olympics are supposed to be about, and that is a celebration of non-professional athleticism. While all Olympic athletes today are being ‘paid to play’ from the standpoint that they’re provided least partial support to train, they’re not pro athletes as we’ve come to know them — being paid millions of dollars to play a sport. So, as the NHL takes a pass, that’s what we’re getting closer to. And, let’s face it, Canadian hockey fans aren’t going to be any less supportive of Team Canada regardless of who happens to be wearing the Canadian hockey sweater. They’re representing us, and we’re going to get behind them. After all, you don’t need an NHL hockey star to create some indelible Canadian hockey memories.

Get behind Art Tree Project Calling all groups in Greater Napanee! I would like to tell you about the Canada 150 Art Tree Project. Initiated by a Women’s Institute member, it has been endorsed by Heritage Canada and can officially use the Canada 150 logo. It is Canada wide. Any community group can participate: schools, churches, businesses, farms, First Nations, service clubs, retirement and long-term care homes and youth organizations. Within these groups there are sub-groups: choirs, arts, drama, clubs, youth groups. This is by no means a complete list! The idea is to share your

heritage and tell your story. The format: the outline of a tree on poster board and any other materials you wish to use, limited only by your imagination and creativity. I invite you to go on the website for exciting ideas: www.arttreeproject.ca. One thing I would like to emphasize, you do not need to spend money on the kit. Everyone’s tree will look the same! The Culture Days Committee is on board with this as is Deputy Mayor Marg Isbester. Our idea is to have a whole wall of art trees on display during Culture Days, on Sept. 30. That means groups

who do not meet during the summer should have their projects completed in June. You can put them on display anywhere, even before the September date, and keep them for years to come. Framing them is recommended as well as sealing them. So how will you recognize your members, educate the public and promote arts and culture in our wonderful communities? Please contact me if you would like to participate. I know we can put on an impressive Art Tree Show: 613-354-1115. Valerie Smith, Greater Napanee

Valuing volunteers The following is a monthly column designed to teach local residents about the wild animals that live among us. Marilyn Kendall is writing the column for the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre, a Napanee-based facility that cares for injured wildlife. Sandy Pines could not have achieved its success without its volunteers. Since April is Volunteer Month, I thought I might offer a glimpse into what they do. Susan is involved in turtle rehabilitation at Sandy Pines. Of one especially difficult but successful case involving a turtle struck by a vehicle, Susan reports that the turtle “is overwintering with us and will be ready to return to her home pond in the springtime. While she lacks the same protection that her original shell provided, she will have more than enough protection for day-to-day living, hopefully laying more eggs and living out her normal lifespan.” The Sandy Pines team works tirelessly at Sandy Pines harvesting eggs from

Norma had many tales to tell about her travels for Sandy Pines. She is accompanied on her drives by her dog, eight-year-old Kerry. Two hours after she brought Kerry home as a pup, she got a call to pick up an animal. So she said to the little dog, “Get ready, Kerry. You’re coming with me. This is your job now too.” There are many ways a person can help Sandy Pines through volunteering. I write this column as my contribution. At this time, Sue would love to have volunteers staff the reception desk – a job that would not only release staff for their direct-care tasks but also be an amazing learning experience for the volunteers. She adds, “We always need more volunteers for driving, hands-on at the Centre and people who enjoy fundraising. Email us at sandypines@gmail.com or phone 613-354-0264.”

Staff Picks: Unearthed Jennifer from the Amherstview Branch of the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries recently enjoyed the memoir Unearthed: love, acceptance, and other lessons from an abandoned garden by Alexandra Risen, in anticipation of the author’s upcoming visit to the Napanee library branch later this month. “In this memoir, Alexandra Risen plants the seeds of understanding which allow love to bloom,” says Jennifer. “Her decades-long toil on a massive, overgrown garden becomes a source of spiritual meaning, physical health, family connection, and self-actualization. An ode to the healing power of nature, Alex’s account of the garden’s restoration shows the myriad benefits of reconnecting to the natural world.” Jennifer explains, “Alex’s eco-spiritual journey begins simply by being present in the garden and recording reflections. Time

spent outdoors puts into relief natural rhythms that mirror shifts in her thinking. Alex’s garden practice comes to symbolize spiritual growth: the changing landscape reflects a reconcilia-

Catherine Coles Coles Notes tion between the wild parts she preserves (the history she claims) and the new parts she cultivates (the space she creates.) The garden becomes a sacred space, bearing witness to a history of its forebears, nurturing an interdependent ecosystem, and inviting participation. Discovery of the garden’s mysteries coincides with Alex’s psychological catharsis. Her felt experience of disconnection from her parents, who were immigrants displaced by the Second World War, echoes their burden: her dad

found refuge in silence and her mom turned to gardening. As Alex revisits tensions she felt growing up, the garden ‘grounds’ her: she makes meaningful connections to memories as she learns about flora and fauna once familiar to her. Quiet time in the garden helps Alex make peace with her parents as she comes to a fuller understanding of their tragic past and embraces her capacity for change. “Careful tending of the garden makes Alex more aware and accepting of natural processes,” Jennifer concludes. “It is a microcosm for navigating life’s challenges: parenting (planting and watering), searching for meaning (cultivating and tilling), and accepting death (harvest.) Alex’s participation in garden work lends itself to many positive outcomes: spiritual growth, general fitness, family reconciliation, community building, and self-actualiza-

tion. It is an invitation for us to do the same.” You can reserve Unearthed in print or ebook formats from your branch of the library or online at CountyLibrary.ca. Everyone is welcome to join the County Libraries in partnership with the L&A Horticultural Society for the free Unearthed event with Alexandra Risen on April 19 at 6:30 p.m.

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 65 Years Ago April 2, 1952 ■ A fundraising drive undertaken by the Red Cross had considerable success in Napanee. Canvassers taking part in a one-day ‘blitz’ through the town garnered $1,665 in donations from residents, breaking the fundraising target of $1,500. The year before, Napanee residents donated $1,375 to the campaign. The next blitz would take place in rural areas around Napanee; organizers hoped that the rural residents would at least match the donations made by their Napanee neighbours. ■ Local conservation officers reported that, despite the fact that muskrat trapping season was now open, and that would-be trappers had sought out permits, there wasn’t too much trapping actually taking place. The conservation officers suggested that there was less trapping taking place because there was still a considerable amount of ice on local waterways left over from winter, dissuading trappers from heading out to their lines.

35 Years Ago April 7, 1982 ■ A 26-year-old Halifax man would be spending at least the next 25 years behind bars after being found guilty of first degree murder in connection with the death of a 16-year-old girl. The jury took only two hours to find Donald Eric Armstrong guilty of the crime, which had taken place in 1978. Armstrong wouldn’t be charged with the crime until 1982; when he was arrested, he was already serving a sentence for attempted murder in connection with a stabbing of another woman that took place in Mississauga in 1977. The body of Linda Bright was found on County Road 11 near Selby, one day after Armstrong had met her while she was working as a sales attendant at a store in the Frontenac Mall in Kingston. ■ Federal funding could be made available to rejuvenate Lennox and Addington’s dwindling forestry industry. Money might also be made available to support fishing in the Napanee and Deseronto area. Some $220 million was being set aside as part of a new federal employment stimulation program. A recent economic study by Lennox and Addington County suggested that the forestry industry had all but disappeared in the county, and there was very little commercial fishing taking place.

L&A Library offering new streaming service

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Android and IOS users can now carry Lennox and Addington County library services in their pocket thanks to a new app launched by the county this weekend. In partnership with Hoopla Digital, anyone with a library card and a high-

speed Internet connection can access thousands of movies, television shows, music albums, eBooks, eAudiobooks and comics. All content is on-demand 24/7, available for streaming or temporary download to a smartphone, tablet or computer. Hoopla will compliment the libraries current eBooks/audiobook platform known as Overdrive. “With Overdrive some of

the materials might be available immediately but often times you have to wait for popular titles,” explains manager of Library Services, County of L&A, Catherine Coles. “Now everything is available through (Hoopla) is available immediately.” Hoopla, which Coles likens to the popular Netflix streaming service, will have the stronger movie, televi-

sion and music collection while Overdrive has more eBooks. “It’s for the user that is looking more than just books and audiobooks,” said Coles. “They’re looking for movies, TV, comics and music as well.” As an added bonus the services will help to eliminate late fees while helping to modernize the library. The decision to expand

access to digital content follows the success of Overdrive, which Coles says has really taken off in the last couple of years, proving popular with patrons of all ages. Hoopla will be free to anyone with an L&A County library card, though it will be limited to five

streams a month per user. Users will gain access by typing in the last four digits of their library card. A limit of downloads is in contrast to Overdrive, which will continue to have unlimited restrictions. To begin using either products, visit www.CountyLibraries.ca.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE Design Build for Amherst Island Ferry Dock Improvements Millhaven and Amherst Island, Loyalist Township DB 2015-4199 THE PROJECT Rankin Construction Inc. (RCI) and their design consultant Morrison Hershfield (MH) have been selected by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to undertake the Detail Design Study and construct the Amherst Island ferry dock improvements (see Key Plan, below). The project includes converting the existing side-loading ramps to end-loading, in order to accommodate the Frontenac II and the new Amherst Island ferry. This will allow for easier access to and from the island, improve the overall efficiency of ferry operations and to better accommodate the increasing number of large commercial trucks and farm equipment. The ferry service improvements will include: end-loading ramps; a larger paved parking area to accommodate more vehicles; sidewalks; an upgraded bubbler system for winter ice control; and new terminal buildings with public restrooms, bike racks, and staff offices. THE PROCESS The study will follow the approved planning process for a Group ‘B’ project in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000) with the opportunity for public input throughout the study. The recommended plan was determined during a Preliminary Design and Environmental Assessment Study which was completed and documented in a Transportation Environmental Study Report in January 2014. A Design and Construction Report (DCR) will be prepared and made available for review and comment upon completion of the study. The DCR public review period will be announced in this newspaper at a later date and on the project website: www.amherstislandferrydocks.ca. Help us share updates: Follow us on Twitter @A_I_ferrydocks PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE The public is invited to attend a Pubic Information Centre (PIC) for this study, which will present and receive input on the study process, the recommended plan, construction staging and proposed mitigation strategies. The PIC will be held on: Millhaven Amherst Island Wednesday, April 26, 2017 Tuesday, April 25, 2017 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Royal Canadian Legion St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church 120 County Road 4, Millhaven 2045 Stella 40 Foot Road, Stella This PIC will be an informal drop-in centre. Gardening expo returning next weekend BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter The local Communities in Bloom committee is offering gardeners near and far more than a few ways to get their hands dirty at its upcoming Greater Napanee Garden

Expo. The event will see the Strathcona Paper Centre filled with vegetable marketers, landscaping specialists and growers of all sorts on April 15. “That’s the beauty of gardening: you can make it what you want,” said Com-

munities in Bloom co-chair Pamela McCracken. But no matter their speciality, McCracken said most gardeners have been especially patient in waiting for suitable growing weather this year. “I think people are still anxious to get going and wanting to see some colour,”

she said. There’s more than enough room for newcomers, as well. An assortment of gardening strategy seminars hosted by local and area experts will take place throughout the day. They range from information sessions with Wentworth Landscaping to a presentation

FIRST, YARKER. THEN, THE REST OF STONE MILLS AND SELBY.

from Kevin Elchuk of Cobourg’s Giboshi Hill Hostas. Even if you’re well seasoned, McCracken said there is a lot more to gardening than meets the eye. “It’s not just a visual thing,” she said. A seed-exchange table will also be on hand for attendees who can’t quite decide what suits their garden best. As for the experts: plant identification contests will also be ongoing. Communities in Bloom is also welcome to new members. McCracken said the group’s primary goal is the upkeep of local gardens in conjunction with local organizations. Examples include meeting every Mon-

With respect to Official Plan Amendment Sections 17(35) and 21 and Zoning By-law Amendment Section 34 of the Planning Act

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Additional information about the application is available for public inspection during regular office hours at the Town of Greater Napanee municipal office by contacting: Gib Garrett Information Services / Planning Clerk Town of Greater Napanee 45 Commercial Court Napanee, Ontario K7R 4A2

A decision was made on the date noted above to approve Amendment No. 36 to the Official Plan for the Town of Greater Napanee as adopted by By-law 2017-0016 and amend Zoning By-law No. 02-22 by By-law number 20170017.

Or phone (613) 354-5931 (Extension 2114) during regular business hours.

Applications were received from KLM Planning Partners on behalf of SFJ Inc. to amend the designation and zoning of the property at 628 County Road 41 to permit the creation of a new lot and associated rights-of-way and easements. The new lot is intended to accommodate “Quick Truck Lube”, a motor vehicle service station. The lot is proposed to be created adjacent to the existing travel plaza. The proposed lot does not have frontage on a public road and will result in the creation of a landlocked parcel. Access will be provided via a right-of-way.

WHEN DECISION IS FINAL

PURPOSE OF THE OFFICIAL PLAN AMENDMENT AND ZONING AMENDMENT

The site is designated ‘Arterial Commercial’ in the Town of Greater Napanee Official Plan. This designation is intended for uses which place a heavy reliance upon vehicular traffic and benefit from exposure and access from major arterial roads. Motor vehicle service establishments are permitted in the existing designation. Section 5.4.5.2.j of the Official Plan requires new lots to have frontage on a public road and Section 5.4.5.2.m. prohibits the creation of landlocked parcels. The site is zoned Arterial Commercial ‘C2’ in Zoning By-law 02-22, in which uses permitted include a motor vehicle service station among other uses. Section 4.12 of the by-law requires access and frontage be provided onto an improved public road or street. Additionally, the C2 Zone has a required minimum lot frontage of 30 metres. An Official Plan Amendment and Zoning by-law Amendment are required to permit the creation of the new lot as proposed. EFFECT OF THE OFFICIAL PLAN AND ZONING AMENDMENTS

The Official Plan Amendment and Zoning By-law Amendment would permit the creation of a new lot without frontage, with access provided via a right-of-way and supporting easements, that is intended to accommodate a vehicle service station. Person/Body

‘Knowledge Circle’ initiative coming to region

Beaver Staff

For some, the concept of a ‘knowledge circle’ is an idea whose time has arrived — or to be more accurate, arrived again. The Land Between — a non-government grassroots national charity — is forging ahead with what’s dubbed the Knowledge Circle project. The initiative is based on the model of

areas across a nine-county region stretching from Georgian Bay to the Frontenac Arch. The Lennox and Addington/Frontenac/Lanark region will be hosting one of those events. Farmers, hunters, anglers, woodlot owners, beekeepers, gardeners, kayakers and hikers — and anyone else who’s interested — will be invited to participate, according to The Land Between. According to the organization, the project is designed to “give a voice to the people and the land, and will result in renewed

Indigenous talking circles, which are an ancient and traditional way of sharing knowledge, finding solutions and building community. In this case, these talking circles are aiming to address significant — and problematic — changes in the soil, water and wildlife habitats. Knowledge Circle events will be held in October and November of this year in four catchment

relationships and capacity within our communities.” In partnership with the Hastings Stewardship Council and Curve Lake First Nation — and with funding support through the Ontario government’s Partnership Grant Program — organizers say they hope to “create the platform for equal voices and collective decision-making in an atmosphere of humility and mutual respect.” For more information about the organization and these events, visit its website at www.thelandbetween.ca.

Peewee Crunch best Buffalo in OT to earn Lower Lakes bronze medal Highly successful season for Peewee Crunch Beaver Sports

he Napanee Crunch Peewee BB outlasted a tough Buffalo Regals team for a 2-1 victory in the bronze medal game this past weekend at the Lower Lakes Championship tournament in Vaughan. The win was a nice bounce back for the Crunch, who had fallen 3-0 to the Regals to close out Saturday’s round robin play. Napanee bested the Belmont Blazers 2-1 to open their tournament followed by a 4-1 loss to the Woolwich Wild. They shut out the Clearview Icecats 4-0 to begin Saturday’s action. The bronze medal victo-

ry capped off a tremendous season for the Crunch who were 13-2-7 in the regular season. Although the team won silver medals at tournaments in Kitchener and Belleville earlier in the season, the bronze medal is the highlight as the Lower Lakes tournament is known at the “best of the best” and featured the top five teams out of the 37 that played in the league. The peewee girls thank their sponsors who contributed to their success this past season and families for their support. The coaches thank the girls for their hard work and commitment. With the season wrapped up, the Crunch will now get set for their tryouts, which begin April 25. Their annual general meeting will take place May 17 at the SPC.

Napanee Raiders hand out season awards, look ahead to 2017-18 Coach Mike Hartwick and entire staff commit to return behind the bench for another year

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Getting swept by the Port Hope Panthers in the league finals for a third straight year notwithstanding, the Napanee Raiders had plenty to celebrate during Thursday’s year end banquet, held at the SPC. On ice success, charitable donations and advancement of their alumni were all feted at the awards dinner.

Also celebrated was the fact that head coach Mike Hartwick and his entire staff of Scott Slack, Jeff Foster and David Pratt will return next season along with trainers Kai Degen and Roddy Todd. For Hartwick it will be his fifth year as bench boss, compiling a regular season record of 92-58-5 to date. “For a fourth straight year we won a greater number of games than we did the year before,” said Adam

In early January we were fortunate enough to host ECH Duben-

DEATHS

DILLENBECK, Gwenythe Bartlett “Gwen” (nee Gourlie)

With great sadness her family announces Gwen’s sudden death at her residence on Saturday March 11, 2017, in her 89th year. Along with her brother the late Keith Gourlie (who would marry the now late Betty Jackson), Gwen had fond memories of growing up in the Selby general store run by her parents Gladys and Harry Gourlie. After attending Normal School in Peterborough, she taught in a number of one-room schools in the Napanee area. Gwen married her beloved Hubert and they built a bungalow on their Little Creek Street farm where they raised their children, David, Beverly and Grant. Gwen was known to many through her years of working at the Napa-

nee Sears order office. Following Hubert’s sudden death after 33 years of marriage, Gwen eventually sold the farm and bought a home on Queen Street where she lived happily and independently until moving into the Riverine in 2015. Her many travels included trips to warm climates with Hubert and later with her caring companion, the late Zeph Gaudreau, in addition to a number of other friends. Gwen appreciated the love and support she received from her children and their spouses, Heather, Jerry and Ruth. She was extremely proud of her grandchildren Matthew, Megan, Nathan, Kristin, Justin and Adam and was never happier than when spending time with her great-grandchildren Emmett, Erik, Mae, Davis, Harrison, Cecelia, Carson and Lauren, who affectionately called her “G.G.” She will also be greatly missed by her nephews, nieces and many friends. Grace United Church and the UCW were also a very important part of Gwen’s life. Gwen will be fondly remembered for her life well lived. The family will receive friends at the Wartman Funeral Home “Napanee Chapel.” on Tuesday, April 11th from 7pm to 9pm and Wednesday, April 12th from 1pm to 2pm. A service celebrating her life will be at 2pm. Interment Riverside Cemetery. Friends desiring may contribute by cheque to Grace United Church. Online condolences at www.wartmanfuneralhomes.com

Memories of WWI airfield to be revived at event BY JUSTIN MEDVE Student Reporter

While countries that fought in the First World War reflect on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, one local resident is taking the time to recognize some lesser-known sacrifices that happened close to home. Just northeast of Deseronto, on the boundary between Lennox and Addington and Hastings Counties, lie remnants of Camp Rathbun, one of the first military aviation training camps in the country. It was used in conjunction with Simcoe County’s Camp Borden and the University of Toronto’s School of Aviation to train Canadian, British and American pilots for flight combat in Europe. The camp’s story will be explored when local historyenthusiast Nancy Bruinsma hosts a tribute event to the camp’s significance at its 126 Deseronto Rd. location and the Deseronto Community Centre on June 10. “It’s hard to tell the story unless you kind of see it — and there’s not much left to see,” she said, adding that an Ontario Heritage Plaque might be all that catches the eyes of a passerby. Bruinsma first took interest in the area after meeting its current owners, the Kimmett family, at a cattle show. They took ownership of the farmland shortly after The Great Depression and have operated in cowcalf production since, under the well-suited name of Gold-Wing Ranch. But amongst long blades of grass and the crumbling foundations of outposts, its wartime purpose becomes evident. Bruinsma has found an assortment of cutlery, bottles, bricks and other relics that were simply buried on-site when the war ended in November of 1918. “Soon as you find something like that, you just get connected to the history. It’s no longer something that happened 100 years ago when you find something that nobody else knew was there,” she said. Slightly more visible is elevated land that once housed a railway conjunction linking Deseronto to the

wider rail network. It was used to transport building supplies from businesses like Napanee Brick and Tile when the camp was built in early 1918. (The camp initially began in Mississauga in 1917 before moving to Deseronto). Decades before the war, the Rathbun family used the farm as a ranch that supplied northern timber camps with horses. Afterwards, they bred cattle. It was also used as an experimental farm at one point, specializing in sugar beet production and advanced growing techniques. Memories also remain off-site — Bruinsma is reaching out to anyone with artifacts, photographs or stories of the men whose freedom took to Deseronto skies before leaving to Europe. They will be used to strengthen an assortment of displays throughout the event. Some confirmed items already include soldier’s uniforms and musical instruments from the Lennox and Addington County Museum and Archives as well as a photo album from a Coburg woman whose relative travelled from Camp Rathbun to France in combat. The Kimmett family also has a piece of propeller from a plane that saw limited production as combat winded down. Bruinsma was also made aware of wall carvings that Allied troops etched in a Deseronto watering hole and now plans to track the names they feature. A lot of stories have been long forgotten in basements and garages, she said. Pictures that surface today were mostly taken to keep the British up-to-date with the camp’s happenings. Otherwise, secrecy was key: planes were first brought to war with the idea reconnaissance. Although there is no official documentation on the matter, one

CRISIS?

German spy allegedly had his cover blown after being seen tampering with planes on Camp Rathbun premises. The event’s other attraction will be a flag raise in honor of those who trained, fought and perished at Camp Rathbun and the nearby Camp Mohawk. Bruinsma said just over a third of pilots who trained in Canada at the time — 1,300 of 3,000 — were stationed at either one of the military installations. A total of 55 men died between both of the camps, victim to underdeveloped planes that were prone to tipping or looping. “They knew that there was almost certain death,” Bruinsma said, going on to mention that fire hydrants and a water tower were crucial installations for the camp. Seven of those men are buried in Deseronto and honored yearly by the Air Force Association of Belleville. This year, the Air Force Association will join Bruinsma’s ceremony in honor of those buried elsewhere by raising the Canadian flag as it usually does. Women also played a key role at the camp, both by nursing at a nearby home used as a military hospital and as plane mechanics. Bruinsma contacted a United States Air Force major to raise the American flag, a member of the Royal Air Force to raise the Union Jack and the Kingston grandniece of a pilot who perished in combat to raise the Royal Flying Corps of Canada’s flag. She has also rounded up three young vocalists to sing The Star Spangled Banner, God Save the Queen and O Canada. Napanee’s Stephen Medd will perform a traditional Royal Flying Corps cadet ballad, too. The event has also caught the attention of Canadian Forces Base Trenton, the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Department of National Defense, the Cana-

Informal beginnings of ‘Easter Parade’ According to historians, the first Easter parade in New York City took place in 1870. As the services at the St.

congregations exited onto 5th Avenue and “strolled” together, enjoying the signs of spring in the air. Naturally, in those days, ladies wore elaborate hats, and the tradition of “bonnets” connected with the procession began. Eventually, competition over who could display the most elaborate chapeaux grew. The early ‘parades’ were not organized, but rather spontaneous in nature. As time passed the numbers grew, until at one time upwards of a million people lined the streets, both as part of the sashay, and as

spectators. Originally it was the elite of society who were in the spotlight, but gradually ‘commoners’ got into the act. Of course, commercialism soon abounded, with milliners turning out hats abounding with feathers, flowers, and stuffed birds — and the retailers raking in the profits as well. So it is not surprising that prolific song writer, Irving Berlin, got into the act. Having immigrated to New York with his parents in 1893, he wrote his first song in 1907, and released his initial ‘hit’, ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band’, four years later. He could not fail to be aware of the much-published parades in his city of adoption, and cashed in when he composed the piece which is probably the bestknown of all secular songs of the season. In 1933 he was called upon to submit a ditty for the Act One finale of the

stage show, As Thousands Cheer. In it figures from a sepia photograph came to life to enjoy the frivolity of 5th Avenue’s Big Apple atmosphere. ‘Easter Parade’ had made its debut.

Glen R. Goodhand Musical Memories He confessed that he “wanted an old-fashioned type song”, but couldn’t seem to come up with anything. So he took the route that he often chose. Of the 800 pieces which he composed only about 20 were totally new creations; the rest being variations of the originals. In this case, he ‘borrowed’ the melody from a song he had written in 1917, ‘Smile and Show Your Dimple’. Actually, the melody of the chorus is the same as the familiar opening line of “Easter Parade”.

He confessed he “changed the end of the tune a little and let it go at that”. A golden oldie of that era, ‘On Your Old Grey Bonnet’, was also a model for his famous melody. This 1917 composition was a flop. So he filed it away for use at some future date. That date happened to be 16 years later. It was revived in grand style as Crosby crooned to his co-star, Marjorie Reynolds, in Holiday Inn, a 1942 movie. But its epic moment came in 1948 when the movie echoing the song title, Easter Parade, made its debut. It starred Judy Garland and Fred Estaire. Other artists to feature this classic in their repertoire include Perry Como, Al Jolson, Oscar Peterson, Sarah Vaughn, and Liberace; as well as orchestras led by Harry James, Guy Lombardo, Sammy Kaye, Glenn Miller, and Woody Herman.
