Britt Benn in action against Australia during the Rugby Sevens semifinals on Monday. While Canada lost this game, they’d defeat Great Britain in the bronze-medal game later the same day, 33-10.

Britt Benn’s years of hard work, sacrifice and more than a few broken bones paid off in a big way Monday night as she and her Canadian women’s sevens rugby teammates captured Olympic bronze in Rio de Janeiro. The Napanee native was on the field as Canada defeated Great Britain 33-10 in the bronze medal game. Just a few hours later, she experienced the ultimate moment for any Olympian as she joined her teammates on the podium with a medal draped around her neck. “That moment there, a lot of emotions were going through my mind, (and) I’m sure the rest of the girls on my team can say the same,” said Benn over the phone from Rio. “A lot of the girls and myself included made a lot of sacrifices along the way. In those moments when you’re developing as a team, you’re wondering if all these sacrifices are worth it. The moment we stepped on the podium I said to myself it all paid off and it’s all been worth it. Every broken bone, every stitch in my body, every bloody nose, broken collarbone and dislocated shoulder, all that pain was worth it.” Canada’s dreams of a gold medal were dashed earlier on Monday when they lost 17-5 to the eventual gold medal winning Australians in the semifinals. That placed them in the bronze medal match against a Great Britain squad that had bested them 22-0 in pool play. “(Monday) was a pretty overwhelming day, a lot of emotions, a roller coaster that’s for sure,” said Benn. “Obviously not the result we were looking for against Australia, but it’s a game of sevens, if you make a mistake good teams are going to capitalize on those mistakes and make you pay for it and that’s what happened to us. We got off game plan and off structure and they put a couple of tries up on us.” They had no time to hang their heads, however, as they had to quickly shift focus to their next match so as not to leave the games empty-handed. “It was tough and it was a tough lesson to learn but once the game was over, that was it,” said Benn. “You kind of have to brush it off and move on because we had a bronze medal to compete for. It was a tough pill to swallow but that’s the challenge of sevens, bouncing back after that and having to play another game three hours later.”

National barefoot waterskiing event roars in Selby Stage set for first-ever international barefoot championship in Canada, scheduled for 2018

BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

Dream Lake near Selby proved to be a dream for organizers of the 2016 Canadian Barefoot Skiing championships this weekend. Although wind caused some rescheduling of some events through the course of the weekend, organizers were pleased with how the event unfolded. “Everything went pretty smoothly on the weekend,” said Becky MoynesMeyer, event organizer and competitor. “We had a few glitches, but everything sorted out pretty easily. From an organizational standpoint, it went off well.” It was the third time in the last four years the nationals had taken place at the artificial lake located a few kilometres east of Selby. “It’s an awesome site,” said Moynes-Meyer. “It’s just a perfect length. It’s not too short, and it’s not too long either. It’s pretty good from a spectator’s perspective, being able to sit at different points down the shore and watch what the skiers are doing. Besides getting blown out on Saturday, every time we’ve

been there we’ve had absolutely perfect conditions. That’s really nice.” By ‘blown out’, she’s referring to the wind gusts that picked up later in the day. “We had to, on Saturday, shut down the jumping (competition), just for safety reasons,” she said. “It just got too windy. Tricks and slalom, those (you can do) on rough waters, but when it gets rough, we don’t want to be anywhere near the jump, because we don’t want anyone tripping and hitting the ramp, or an increased risk of that.” Instead, the jumping competition was held on Sunday morning when the wind had diminished. Moynes-Meyer said she was happy with the turnout at the event; about 400 spectators took in at least some of the action on Saturday, she said. Those hoping to see more barefoot waterskiing will want to make sure they’re around two years from now — the International Barefoot Waterskiing Championships will be held at Dream Lake in August 2018, the first time the event has been held in Canada.

BENN | Appreciates hometown support CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Canada showed no lingering effects from their heart breaking loss, jumping out to a 26-7 lead at the half and holding on for the win. Benn saw significant playing time throughout the tournament and even scored a try in her first Olympic game, helping Canada to a 45-0 win over Japan. Canada would go 2-1 in pool play and bested France 15-5 in the quarter-finals. Throughout her push to the Olympics Benn has always credited the support she has received from back home. She says she was particularly touched by the photo her parents sent her of over 100 people turn“The community has always ing out in front of Strathcona been behind me, and friends and the Paper Centre to family as well. It’s incredible to offer best wishes. “When I saw know that someone’s backing that photo my just you through the whole journey.” jaw dropped,” said Britt Benn Benn. “I was overwhelmed with emotion. The support that I’ve received over the last 11 or 12 years, ever since I was in Grade 9 when I took off in rugby there and played provincials, and nationals and made my way up the ladder, the community has always been behind me and friends and family as well. It’s incredible to know that someone’s backing you through the whole journey.” Benn says she’s felt honoured to be among the first to ever play rugby sevens at the Olympics and hopes she has inspired others to take up the sport back home. Her part of the games now over with, Benn says she is looking forward to spending the next couple of weeks at Canada House and attending some of the other sports to show her support for her fellow Canadians, much as many have done for her. After that she says she’s looking forward to returning home to family after spending much of the last few years training with the national team in British Columbia. As for competing in the 2020 Tokyo games, that hasn’t even crossed the 27-year-old’s mind. “I’m not going to make that decision yet,” said Benn. “I’m going to let my body rest up and not make any crazy decisions. Right now I’m still pretty starstruck about winning a bronze medal and being an Olympian and being a part of this historical moment and representing my country, my hometown, my university, my club teams and everyone that was a stepping stone to get me here.”

Quinte Conservation declares Level 3 drought BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

Seth DuChene-Staff

Water flows in local rivers — including the Napanee River at Newburgh — are far lower than seasonal averages.

Quinte Conservation took the unprecedented step of declaring a Level 3 Low Water Condition, signalling a failure of water supply to meet demand and giving local municipalities the green light to implement local water-use restrictions. The neighbouring Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority — which includes parts of southern Greater Napanee and Loyalist Township — declared a Severe Drought condition (equivalent to a Level 3 Low Water Condition) on Tuesday. “We confirm low water conditions using two criteria: precipitation and stream flow,” said Quinte Conservation Water Resources Manager Christine McClure. “Both criteria are very low for this time of year and lower than we usually see at the end of summer or early fall. Some of our rivers are experiencing the lowest flows we have ever recorded for July.” According to Quinte Conservation Communications Manager Jennifer MayAnderson, some of those records go back as far as 1915. “In recent memory, we had an extended period of low water in 2012,” she said. “In 2012, it started earlier, it started in April, but it remained more moderate.

showers and laundry. Drinking water and food preparation only make up about five per cent of the water used in an average home.”

Even though it lasted into October, we were pretty much only in a Level 2 condition toward the end of the summer. This has happened abruptly and has happened severely. It just continues to get worse.” The conservation authority has been collecting anecdotal data from residents living in the watershed with regard to wells running dry. “We’re finding out that, certainly, people’s wells are going dry,” May-Anderson said. “It doesn’t appear that it’s in an isolated area over the watershed. We’ve got people in Prince Edward County whose wells are going dry, we’ve got people in the Napanee region whose wells are going dry, and people in the Moira region whose wells are going dry. It’s an across-the-board situation, it’s not isolated to a particular area.” With the Level 3 declaration, Quinte Conservation is asking residents and businesses to reduce their water usage by 50 per cent. “Reducing water use by half means that residents will have to take a hard look at how they are using their water,” said McClure. “Many local people have already started stopped watering their lawns in an effort to conserve water. Other large uses of water in the average home are toilets,

FTER she won a bronze medal for Canada with her national rugby sevens team on Monday, Britt Benn was quick to credit her hometown (along with many others) who contributed to her success along the way, a road that ultimately led to Olympic glory. We don’t want to speak for the hometown here, but… we will anyway: Benn put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces when she said that. We in the hometown couldn’t be prouder that she’s one of us. In truth, however, Benn’s showing on the international stage has now returned much more to her hometown than her hometown could have ever given her. She’s obviously given us one more Olympic medallist to brag about, along with Lesley Thompson (who also happens to be competing for Canada in Rio in rowing). As we all know, hometowns can never have too many Olympic medallists. Far more importantly, however, she’s given us something to be inspired by, showing that hard work and dedication will allow you reach the loftiest of goals. Indeed, her performance in Rio, in one of the roughest and toughest of sports there is, might just be the spark needed to set a new generation of girls and boys off on their own journeys to victory (even if it might not be on the Olympic stage, or in athletics at all). Let’s not forget that Benn and Team Canada’s Olympic journey had its fair share of adversity this week on the other side of the equator. First, they had to come back from a lopsided loss to Great Britain in the preliminary round. Then, it was the loss to powerhouse Australia — the eventual Olympic champions — in the semifinals, dashing their hopes for a silver or gold medal. If that wasn’t hard enough to deal with, after that second loss, they were destined to take on that same Great Britain side again. It was easy to assume that the big, bad Brits would lay the same kind of thumping on the Canucks in the rematch. Well, Benn and the Canadians weren’t going to play by that script — and the rest is (quite literally, in this case) history. Just like it is in any rugby game, when you get knocked to the pitch, you get up, dust yourself off and continue to fight. So for whatever this community contributed to Benn’s success, this community — and particularly its youngest members — are now seeing some priceless payback. Indeed, it shows that a little investment in our youth can show a wonderful, glorious return. Congratulations, Britt!

A little help goes a long way The following is a monthly column designed to teach local residents about the wild animals that live among us. Marilyn Kendall is writing the column for the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre, a Napanee-based facility that cares for injured wildlife. This month I offer you a story written by Doreen Brown, a senior living in Prince Edward County. To me it illustrates that the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre rescues more than animals in need of help but also those of the human species who find a wild creature in danger and want to help but don’t know how.

A man came and took the bird, telling me he would bring back my carrier and hot-water bottle as he lived just down the road. When the man returned, he said the bird was a small mourning dove that was very thin and its wings were frozen from the cold. They thought it was late being hatched and would survive with some care. I have never seen so small a mourning dove. I called the sanctuary the next day and was told my little bird was eating by itself and they would keep it until it could survive on its own. I felt so happy. ‘Dream Lake’ event deserves top marks Thank you to Dwight and Michele Williams for providing a facility and event bringing national attention to our town and area. The National Barefoot waterski event hosted by the Williams family is something Napanee-area residents can be proud of and express their appreciation to Dwight, Michele and their families sharing their personal property and time. The Williams family are proud of our community where generations have contributed generously to its development. In August 2018, the Williams have agreed to host the International Barefoot Waterski Championship. These events are sponsored by waterskiing enthusiasts with support of local and national sponsors. It is important that, given the significance of such an international event, that our municipality, province, and federal government lend their support to this event. Popular summer reads in L&A The summer months are when the library is at its busiest. There’s lots going on in terms of children’s summer programming, of course, but I also think this is the time of year people read the most: on the deck, on the dock, on vacation, etc. Even fair-weather readers tend to come out of the woodwork and enjoy at least a couple books during the low-key summer months. Here are five books have been the most popular so far this summer in our local library system. Unsurprisingly, the title that has circulated the most this summer (and this year!) is our One Book, One L&A 2016 community read Season of Darkness by historical mystery author Maureen Jennings. Jennings is the creator of Murdoch Mysteries but Season of Darkness is the first book in her separate Tom Tyler series. During the darkest days of the Second World War, young women from all walks of life have joined the Land Army to help desperate farmers keep the country fed. When one girl is found murdered on a desolate country road, Detective Tom Tyler is almost glad for the distraction from other troubles. His rural posting is dull. A lover has reappeared and turned his emotions upside down. His soldier son seems utterly changed by Dunkirk and

his daughter is an unhappy 16. When another girl disappears, his investigation is further complicated and tensions are about to reach an all-time high in this small, English town. Read this book in time for Oct. 15, when Maureen Jennings will be paying us a visit at our third annual Author Gala. The Lake House by Kate Morton is another title that keeps flying off the shelves. On a Coles’ s u m m e r evening in 1933, Theo Edevane vanishes from his crib and is nowhere to be found. After months of searching with no results, the devastated Edevane family leaves their lakeside estate in Cornwall for London. They will never go back. Seventy years later, Detective Constable Sadie Sparrow is visiting her grandfather in Cornwall while on work leave. One day, on a run through the woods, she stumbles upon the once proud Edevane mansion, which is now in ruin. Sadie’s natural curiosity is piqued when she learns the story of the baby boy who disappeared from the house without a trace and she decides to investigate. If you enjoy reading books that strongly evoke a time and place, look no fur-

ther than Kate Morton’s novels — this one included. One book I didn’t expect to have the significant uptake is The Rainbow Comes and Goes a memoir by journalist Anderson Cooper and co-written by his mother Gloria Vanderbilt. Anderson always had a good relationship with Gloria but when she turned 91, he realized that he really didn’t know very much about her early life. This promptNotes ed him to suggest that they begin an email correspondence which transpired over the course of a year. The emails are compiled into this heartfelt memoir reflecting on their tumultuous lives, relationships, and their thoughts about life in general. Barkskins by Annie Proulx, author of The Shipping News, has been hotly anticipated by the literary set for a couple years now. Set in 1693, it follows two lone Frenchmen named Rene Sel and Charles Duquet. They have arrived in New France to appalling conditions as indentured servants. They are faced with a vicious master, freezing winter, and the thickest woodland they’ve seen — their task is to chop trees down for the next three

years in order to earn their freedom. What follows is a story that unfolds over three centuries and a whopping 700 pages. This epic novel requires a big commitment — it’s long, it’s complex, it covers a lot of ground. Perhaps the reason why it’s in short supply at the library is that readers couldn’t possibly read fast enough to return it early. First Comes Love by Emily Giffin follows Josie and Meredith, sisters that couldn’t be more opposite of each other. Josie is the elder, but makes rash decisions, loves to party, and wonders whether she should look for a sperm donor as she’s entering her late thirties. Meredith is a bit more settled, with a husband and young daughter in tow…but she finds herself wanting more from her lacklustre life. One day, tragedy strikes and their family is never the same again. Secrets and resentments build until the book reaches its conclusion. Like all of Emily Giffin’s novels, this one has been very popular with character-driven chick-lit fans. All of the books mentioned here can be reserved from the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries at www.countylibrary.ca. Catherine Coles is Manager of Library Services in Lennox and Addington.

* Last week’s ‘Looking Back’ featured items from the Aug. 10, 1966, Napanee Beaver. ■ According to experts, the drought of the summer of 1966 was worse than the drought of one year earlier. A report by the Ontario Department of Agriculture said that conditions were more serious in 1966 than they were at any time in 1965. The report also suggested that all crops were being affected by the current drought, and that a second cut of hay would likely be poor. Crop yields were down from typical years across the board. It stated that only about one-quarter of the rain generally expected during season had fallen that year. ■ A bylaw from Napanee council to prohibit left turns at both the Centre Street and Dundas Street intersection and the Dundas Street and John Street intersections needed the blessing of the Ontario Department of Transport before it could come into force. Napanee Clerk M.C. Graham said that it might be a month before the ordinance was approved by the provincial authority. Council gave the measure first and second reading, but it could not be enforced until the province signed off.

30 Years Ago August 13, 1986 ■ The Lennox and Addington Branch of the Ontario Humane Society was pushing hard to get a new animal shelter built. The shelter would house abandoned and mistreated animals. Although the branch had $43,000 set aside to construct the building, it lacked the necessary funds to pay for a trained animal technician and other operating expenses. “We’re hoping to open a thrift sho in downton Napanee that will help to generate revenue,” said branch president Marjorie Finlay. ■ A local grocery store owner was petitioning Napanee town council to allow him to open for business on Sundays. Mike LeVon, owner of the Napanee Mr. Grocer store, made the request to council. At the time, council had a bylaw on the books that prevented stores larger than 2,000 square feet from being open on Sunday. LeVon argued that, particularly during the summer months when there was an increase in the number of tourists in town, it would be a good idea to have a grocery store open in Napanee on Sundays.

SALE OF LAND BY PUBLIC TENDER The Corporation of the Town of Greater Napanee

Take Notice that tenders are invited for the purchase of the land(s) described below and will be received until 3:00 p.m. local time on August 25, 2016, at the Municipal Office, 124 John St., Napanee Ontario

Curb appeal has always been an important element of exterior design.

15 years later, some advice doesn’t change Looking back in my ‘scrapbooks’ of my design column articles (yes, I save every one I’ve written) over the years, I realized Aug. 1, 2001 was my first design column. I had recently come back to Napanee from graduating design school in Toronto and started up my own design consulting business. I decided writing a design column for the local newspaper was an excellent and exciting way to share design stories, tips and trends. Fifteen years later, I’m still sharing my design enthusiasm with you. This week’s column is the first article that started it all off: ‘Tips to creating that First Impression’ of your home, and after 15 years, the ideas still hold true today: We all know homes that stand out and are picturesque, and most of our homes have their own unique blend of charm. There is no magical formula for creating this, but here are some ideas that can enhance the look of your home. The one thing we notice instantly is colour. Colour is a powerful tool, when it is used correctly. When choosing your exterior painting, look to your surroundings for inspiration. The colour of your trim should complement the colour of your roof. Bright sun will make bold colours look more vibrant. So if this is too much, try the historical colours, which have grey undertones, making the colour seem toned down. Instead save bright colours for accessories, such as porch chairs, or a bird feeder. This allows bright

Design Time colours to be used in a small area as well as brightening up the front of your house. With a brightened entrance, visitors are greeted with a pleasant sense of hospitality. As the entry way is an important transition space from the outdoors in, and vise-versa. A covered porch is a great way to create this. It also allows you to have an outdoor room, with seating and warm lighting. Painting your door a bright, bold colour will allow it to stand out from the rest of your house. Then liven up your door with a knocker, or a welcoming wreath, or basket of flowers. Placing wicker furniture will add some character to your entrance, as would a pair of urns, or ivy-covered trellis panels flanking the entrance. These all make your entrance more inviting and add a unique sense of charm. If elegance is more your style, try a pair of coach lanterns on either side of your door. Lighting is key as well.

It can bring your home to life at night and give it some interesting character. To create some drama, add lighting alongside your driveway, between shrubbery and plants or interesting outdoor fixtures. Indoor lighting can also play an important role as it shines through the windows and can convey a feeling of warmth. Adding flowers is a great way to achieve a warm, welcoming home. Landscaping is an easy way to add colour, beauty, personality to your home. Adding interesting architectural artifacts to your garden, or a birdbath or sundial will add more interest and curiosity. Bring flowers from your garden to other areas such as your porch and display them in containers, creating the illusion that your garden is larger than believed. Flowers add the finishing touch to a welcoming home. Try these tips and you’ll notice a difference, your neighbours will be over soon for a visit. Thanks to all the readers that have read my column from the beginning until today and continuing in the future. I love hearing from you and helping with any design solutions, and sharing what’s new in design. To another 15 years of writing! Starstop series to take celtic turn Kingston folks/roots artist Chris Murphy scheduled to perform in Napanee next week

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

ISTENING to folk/roots musician Chris Murphy sing, one might guess he hails from a small seaside fishing harbour in the Maritimes. In truth the singer/songwriter was born and raised in Sydenham, Ont., though he often says he ‘left his heart on Fogo Island, Newfoundland.’ He and fiddler Brian Flynn will

L

be the next guests in the popular Star Stop Series, playing at Napanee’s Ellena’s Cafe on Aug. 18. “I really identify with Stan Rogers,” said Murphy on being born in Ontario but loving the Maritime lifestyle. “He was from the Hamilton area but he had family in Nova Scotia so he gravitated toward Atlantic Canada quite a bit. Me, I don’t have any family roots out east but the first time I travelled there, I was about 18 and fell in love with the

music and the people.” On stage, his voice has been compared both to that of Rogers’ and Steven Page, former frontman of the Barenaked Ladies. As much as he draws inspiration from the east coast, he says growing up near Kingston has also played a huge role in his career as the city is rich in culture. “It’s a very musical town,” Murphy said of Kingston. “It’s always punched above its weight

class as far as a lot of the big bands that have come out of Kingston.” During his stop in Napanee he will be playing songs both from his solo CD titled Finally Coming Home, as well as a couple of songs from his band Turpin’s Trail. When writing original songs he says he draws on everyday life experiences, such as the emotions he felt when he had to leave his young daughter at home with his parents while he went on a five-day tour of the Maritimes.

He says his show will feature a mix of acoustic folk songs as well as toetapping fiddle jigs and reels. Next Thursday’s show will mark his first stop at Ellena’s Cafe but he says it should be the perfect venue for his style of music. “We play predominately acoustic instruments,” said Murphy. “Sometimes we play these smaller house concerts and we don’t even plug in. That environment is just perfect. You get a smaller crowd and listening ears and it’s really great. You can really engage with

the crowd and interact. I’m really looking forward to it.” Samples of his music can be found online at www.ChrisMurphy.ca. Tickets for the show are $20 each and are available online at www.StarStop.ca or by visiting Ellena’s or Marie’s Place. Starstop is an ongoing concert series that aims to draw in a wide variety of artists who may have a day off between larger venues while traveling the highway. It’s a community based organization and was founded in 2015.

Roy Bradshaw and his band, Country Sky, served as the host band for the Classic Country Music Festival in Centreville this weekend. Organizers reported that they saw a significant uptick in festival-goers, with some 200 trailers — some from as far away as Quebec and the U.S. — filling the Centreville Fairgrounds to take in three packed days of standout country performers. All proceeds from the event will go to local community projects supported by the Newburgh-Camden Lions Club, which organized the festival.

Second tier is right spot for Express to ‘B’ Squirts qualify as provincial ‘B’ team BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

The Casa Art Napanee Express squirt girls played their way into the ‘B’ Division of the U10 Provincials, following their fifth place finish at the PWSA Qualifier they hosted this weekend. A total of 11 teams took part in the double knock-out tournament, which was held at the Napanee Fairgrounds. The qualifier served as a seeding tournament for the provincial Grand Championship, which will take place later this month. A 12-5 loss to Barrie in their fifth game ended the

Elle Chapman of the Casa Art Napanee Express Squirts swings at a pitch delivered from a Vaughan pitcher during the PWSA Qualifier, which was held this weekend in Napanee. Express’ weekend, placing them one win shy of qualifying for the ‘A’ Division, but also meant they would be the top seed headed into the

second tiered ‘B’ Division. The Express started the weekend with a 10-0 victory over the Vaughan ‘05 squad on Friday but were bested

by Vaughan’s ‘04 entry in their first game on Saturday. They responded with a 19-4 win over Port Perry and 10-0 win over Kawartha

before falling to Barrie. The top four teams would advance to the ‘A’ Grand Championship, with five through eight relegated to the ‘B’ division and nine through 11 playing in ‘C’. The provincial tournament will take place in Brampton the weekend of Aug. 19. “I think for our team, ‘B’ is where we need to be,” said Express coach Jason Barkley. “We can compete with the ‘A’ teams, but we won’t be as successful as if we were in the ‘B’ so I think we’re in the right spot.” For many of the Napanee girls, this weekend’s tournament was their first experience playing in front of the home crowd. They play the majority of their tournaments either in the GTA or Cobourg. Barkley was pleased with how the team responded and fed off the home town support. “One through 12 all had a great weekend, some

games better than others,” said the coach, noting his entire roster contributed throughout the weekend. “Measuring from the start of the year to where we are now, we’re playing our best ball and that should help us going into the provincials.” Looking ahead to provincials, which will serve as the wrap up to the season, Barkley says the Express should be very competitive against the rest of the province. The team is made up of Pearl Monk, Niki Weese, Dakota Weese, Elle Chapman, Samantha Smith, Lila Pringle, Payton Barkley, Payton Hutcheson, Jaidyn Manion, Merissa Reynolds, Rachel Wilkinson and Maddy Oster. “There's 12 teams going to ‘B’ and we should be one of the top three teams so we should have a good draw which should benefit us,” said Barkley.

Raiders set to host main hockey training camp Foster, Pratt join coaching staff BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

urrent temperatures not withstanding, hockey season is fast approaching. That’ll be evident this weekend as the Napanee Raiders hold their main training camp this weekend, running 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Strathcona Paper Centre. As with every August, the Raiders’ roster is very fluid at the moment as they have to wait for Junior A teams to make their cuts and see which of their players will return to Junior C. They still figure to have a few holes to fill and will look to plug some of them following this weekend’s camp. Interested players can request an invite by visiting www.NapaneeRaiders.com. While there is expected to be some influx in the roster, the bench will have a bit

C

of a new look as well. Head coach Mike Hartwick and Scott Slack will return for their fourth and seventh years respectively, but the club recently announced Dave Kerr and Randy Holmes has informed them they would be stepping down. “It’s going to be difficult losing both of those guys, they played huge roles the last three years with coaching and recruiting,” said Hartwick. “It’s going to be tough not being able to talk with them and see them all the time, but they are probably going to take on some scouting roles or something like that to stay involved with the program.” Coming in to replace them are two familiar names in the Napanee sporting community in Jeff Foster and Dave Pratt. “Fozzie’s coached for a lot of years now with minor hockey, G.K. (Greater Kingston), the Napanee Crunch and coached Junior A with the Kingston Voyageurs and Wellington Dukes for several years,” said Hartwick. “It’ll be great getting him in here for some fresh thoughts and ideas and his experience I believe

will pay off.” “With Dave, he’s a younger guy,” Hartwick said of Pratt, noting he’s not too far removed from his junior career, playing with the Dukes. “I would think he wold be a sounding board for many of the younger players. They would feel, I think, quite comfortable going to David. He did help us out a bit in that first year and he’s going to be taking on an even bigger role this year and I’m quite looking forward to that.” Pratt most recently was on the bench with the Napanee Stars midget team last season. Hartwick says the team is fairly confident it will have both Austin Boulard and Jordan Cannons back for their fourth years. Boulard wore the ‘C’ last season while Cannons sported an ‘A’ on his jersey. Boulard led the team with 57 points while Cannons was fifth with 35. A couple of other veterans are looking like they may return as well, though it’s yet to be finalized. "I think we'll be quite competitive," said Hartwick.

RAIDERS | Roster beginning to take shape as team gears up for regular season “We’re still waiting for the higher levels to see what's going to happen with some of our guys. We’ve lost some guys already but that’s part of our job, we’re quite happy to be a phase in their development.” One area that will look drastically different next year is between the pipes as neither Cameron Parr or Tomo Mikuljan will return. Parr shouldered the majority of the load last year, starting 26 regular season games while going 15-7-3. The Raiders’ regular season schedule is expected

to be released within the next couple of weeks with all six of last year’s clubs (Picton, Gananoque, Port Hope, Campbellford, Amherstview and Napanee) returning for the 2016-17 season, each playing each other eight times, for home, four away. They will however play under a new umbrella known as the Provincial Junior Hockey League. The league formerly known as the Empire B League will now be referred to as the Tod Division of the PJHL. Napanee has announced three pre-season games so far. They will take on the Picton Pirates in Wellington

games will be the new norm in Napanee, as they announced earlier this summer that they would be switching from their traditional Tuesday night slot to Fridays in an effort to make it easier for families to attend game days. Prior to the opening face-off the Raiders will be hosting their annual alumni golf tournament Aug. 26 at Bath's Loyalist Golf and Country Club. For $100 members of the public can play alongside Raiders from on Aug. 28, starting with a home Sept. 9 to host the past and present. The cost 2:30 p.m. puck drop. On Islanders for a 7:30 p.m. 18 holes, cart and dinner. Sept. 7 they will travel to game at the Strathcona For an additional $20 playGananoque to face the Paper Centre. ers can take part in the Islanders and then return Friday night home

Raiders Power Play with a chance to enter competitions and win prizes. This year the tournament will feature two hole-in-one competitions, with a chance to win $25,000 or $10,000. MEMORIAMS

O’CONNOR, BRIAN THOMAS

September 17, 1994 - August 15, 2011

Today a Heavy Weight Champion Prize Fighter has decided to hang up his gloves with pride and strength. Brian passed away peacefully at Rogers House with his parents and brothers by his side. After a life of struggle and chronic pain which Brian always faced bravely, he chose to end the fight and seek peace. Brian enjoyed swimming, horseback riding, bird watching, shopping, arts and crafts, watching movies, walks, trains and big machines. He was a big fan of The Deadliest Catch and loved watching his Senators play hockey. While at Roger’s House he enjoyed several visits from Mike Fisher and other teammates and enjoyed listening to stories by Farley Mowatt. Brian loved his cats who kept a watch over him during his many illnesses. Brian attended both St. John Catholic Elementary and St. John High School, where he had many friends with whom he loved spending time. Brian’s family are grateful for the unconditional love, attention and care he received from Rogers House where he was often pampered with spa days from his Rogers House Family. The support of family and many friends during his final days brought great comfort to Brian and for this we are so touched. Brian will forever be missed by his Dad and Lind’r, Mom, his brothers Daniel and Mark, aunts, uncles and cousins and by his many other families, Rogers House, Lanark Community Programs, Bayshore Home Health and the St. John family. In lieu of flowers donations to Roger’s House in Brian’s memory would be greatly appreciated. Brian’s funeral was entrusted to the care of the O’Dacre Family Funeral Home, Perth, ON. Brian left an undeniable mark in his almost 17 brief years with us on this earth. He will be admirably remembered and forever missed! A celebration of Brian’s life with visitation took place at St. John Elementary School Wednesday, August 31, 2011.

DEATHS

TOOTH, Jean Marie (Cameron)

Passed away peacefully, a month after her 89th birthday, in Napanee, Ontario, at 10pm, July 31st, 2016. Beloved only child of Carrie (Mellis) and Peter Cameron, Jean was born in the small prairie community of Kindersley, Sask., June 6, 1927. Her early memories were of the 'dirty thirties', wheat fields, Model T Fords converted to horse drawn sleds and the friendships she formed then would prove to last a lifetime. A teen when WW2 broke out, she attended the University of Saskatchewan after the war. She returned to Kindersley, worked at the drug store and made a home for her father. Her friends would remember her wonderful singing voice, joy in socializing, sharp sense of humour and her passion for card playing and puzzles. A young ex-RCAF crewman, recent agriculture graduate and wickedly handsome baseball player, Arthur Tooth from Oakville, Manitoba, eventually impressed her enough and she was a June bride in 1956. The couple lived in Winnipeg for the first few years of married life, building their own house in Charleswood, with a one year old Glenn in tow and then a couple of years later, relocating to Calgary, making a new home and having their second son Bob and making more close friends. Jean and Art shortly moved to Tuxedo, a suburb of Winnipeg, where they lived for over 30 years. They loved to entertain in their home. Gatherings with family, friends, business associates and bridge parties and other social activities would be a weekly norm. After the pressure years of raising the boys and fulfilling the not inconsiderable obligations of a busy executive's wife she became involved in many projects and charities, including the Canadian Paraplegic Association, the Cancer Society and the St. Andrew's Church Ladies Auxiliary and choir. In 1973 Art came home from a fishing trip and announced they were building a cottage in Rainy River, Ont. "Where the hell is Rainy River?" Little did she know it would become their retirement residence and another beloved and welcoming community. She loved it because Dad loved the River. After retirement Jean and Art split their time between a condo in Palm Dessert, Ca. and the cottage, traveling and supervising over a growing catalogue of grandchildren for a dozen years. Along the way squeezing in a couple of hundred thousand miles of driving between Lake of the Woods and the Coachella Valley, surviving cancer twice, playing cards and looking after each other and everyone else. Unfortunately, these times came to an end when Art's health was severely compromised. As nurse and constant companion for the next 7 years, Jean devoted herself to caring for him. Still, they undertook, when she was 75, to design and build a new house in town and enjoyed several independent years together and finally apart, made possible by the wonderful support of their last community, with visits from family and friends. For the last few years of her life Jean suffered from increasing memory and vision problems. This prompted her to relocate to Napanee, Ont., closer to the boys. She continued to enjoy her life and was close to her two sons, her grandchildren Skylar, Stanzie, Sarah, Morgan and Samantha, Nick, Ceilidh and Cameron and enjoyed her three great-grandsons Jack, Reid and Zefram. She will be deeply missed by her daughter-in-laws Monique and Alison and her grandsons-in-law Ryan and Dan. Jean outlived the family members in her generation. Because she was an only child she was especially close to Art's family and is survived by Art's cousins Bruce (Jan) Tooth, Gerrie Tooth and Florence (Wilbur) Klatt. She was so grateful for all you did for her and Art. She benefited from and greatly appreciated the kindness and compassion of the staff in her retirement residences in Napanee and felt content and safe in her last years. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The John Parrott Centre, Napanee, Ont. or Canadian Cancer Society. Before she finally slept she was singing, "We'll meet again, don't know how, don't know when." Gwennie and Orille, Stuart and Louise, Jack and Sarah can't wait to see you again! Your Mum and Dad are with them. Art says "Come quick, the gangs here". An interment and memorial gathering at Oakville Cemetery, Oakville Manitoba, will be held on October 1, 2016. Meteor shower makes for must-see skywatching BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Always a favourite among stargazers, this year’s Perseid meteor shower figures to provide its best show in nearly two decades. Set to peak tomorrow evening, experts predict viewers could expect to see upwards of 150 meteors per hour shoot across the sky, an increase of the 50 to 100 in a typical sighting. Naturally Lennox and Addington’s Dark Sky Viewing Area will make for a prime viewing spot for the light show. As an added bonus, local renowned astronomer Terence Dickinson will be on hand to offer a laser-guided tour of the universe. “The L&A Dark Sky Viewing Area is the most southerly dark sky site in Ontario, so the viewing conditions are ideal to see the stars and the Perseid meteor shower that’s happening this weekend,” said Rob Plumley, economic development officer for L&A County. “The light pollution from distant cities is negligible so the stars really light up the sky like nowhere else in southern Ontario.” Made up of small ice and dust from the Comet SwiftTuttle, the Perseid meteors

are visible from Earth every August. Though Friday is its peak, it will continue to light up the night sky through most of the month. So reliable is the Perseid shower that experts say if someone were to look up into the night sky on Friday night for at least 15 minutes they would see at least one meteor, likely more. The brightest meteorites will be even brighter than the stars. Best of all no gear whatsoever is required to see the show, as it’s all visible without the help of a telescope or binoculars. In fact it’s actually recommended to leave that stuff at home as it could actually hinder the experience. Because the meteors can appear at any time in any place in the sky, it’s best to just bring a lawn chair and constantly scan the skies with naked eyes. This year’s peak also happens to coincide with a time when the moon won’t be as prominent in the sky, which should further aid in making for pristine viewing conditions. A large crowd is expected to head north to the DSVA, as it has been a large draw throughout the summer. “We’ve been hosting laser guided tours of the night sky regularly this year, and the feedback has been amazing,”

said Plumley. “Since May, we’ve had well over 500 people visit the site on event nights, with many more attending on clear nights throughout the summer. A big percentage of the visitors are from urban areas from the GTA and beyond that are truly taken aback by the view. Some have never seen a night sky like this before in their life.” A cloudy night is the only thing that could spoil the show. Guests are encouraged to visit www.DarkSkyViewing.com a few hours before the event to make sure the conditions are conducive to night sky watching. There is no charge to attend the event. The DSVA is located 37 kilometres north of Napanee, near the Sheffield Conservation Area.

The Tamworth and District Lions Club recently presented a $5,000 cheque for the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital Foundation to past LACGH board chair Peggy Rice. The Lions raised this money at their annual golf tournament in June. This brings their total donations to the hospital to $45,000

Emerald Isle music festival arrives at Amherst I. BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Music lovers will want to set sail for Amherst Island this weekend for the sixth annual Emerald Musical Festival, which runs Friday through Sunday. Anchored in the middle of Lake Ontario, the festival is held on a 100-acre beef farm overlooking the lake. “It’s a great small festival with 500 or 600 people with a mixture of music,” explains Dan Simpson, who hosts the festival along with his wife Joan and a crew of volunteers. He is also one of the performers. “We have bluegrass, older country, new country and a bit of folk music and a bit of 50s and 60s rock music.” This year’s festival will include two headliners in Little Caesar and the Consuls, who make their first appearance on the island, and Beartracks, who return for a second year. “The Consuls are one of the oldest rock and roll groups in Canada,” said Simpson. “They’ve had a few hits way back when, one of them being ‘Hang On Sloopy’. I remember it when I was just a young lad. They’ve been performing since ’56, not with the same people of course. We were able to acquire them for

a dance band for Saturday night.” The other headliners are Beartracks, who return by popular demand. They won the audience over last year with their set and continued to win fans by holding an impromptu performance on the ferry for all passengers and crew.

“They’re from New York State and Vermont,” said Simpson. “They’re a great bluegrass group, very entertaining.” They will be playing both Saturday evening and again on Sunday. Among the other acts that are scheduled to take the stage are Runaway Cowboys,

Tom MacIntosh, Lynn Pilon and Beggar’s Canyon, Easy Street, Don Cochrane and Neville Wells, CR5 Bluegrass, Handsome Molly and Kyle Dunn. An Odessa native, Dunn is fresh from recording in Nashville, Tenn. Guests are encouraged to bring their own guitars as well and will have the chance to take the

stage for an open mic set on Friday night. Daily passes for the event, which are available at the door, are $10 for Friday, $25 for Saturday and $10 for Sunday. A weekend pass is available for $35 and includes rough camping. Children under 12 are free but must be accompanied by an adult.

Simpson says he makes no money off the festival, but simply hosts it for the love of music. To help offset the cost they will be holding a draw for a yellow Gretsch 5120 Pro Jet Electromatic six string guitar. They will also be holding a 50/50 draw. For more, visit www.EmeraldMusicFestival.com.
