Stone Mills Township is willing to host large-scale solar projects. However, township council says it won’t just support any large-scale solar project — including two currently being proposed for the municipality — unless certain conditions are met. Township council will decide whether it will support separate ‘large renewable procurement’ proposals by BluEarth and Algonquin Power at a special meeting at the township hall in Centreville on Aug. 20, starting at 6 p.m. “The companies have until that date to respond to our township staff in order to meet the requirements of the agreements, and that’s the road use agreement, the vibrancy fund agreement, and to meet the environmental and screening concerns expressed by the community as well as council,” Reeve Clarence Kennedy told the Beaver on Tuesday. “The purpose of the meeting will be thus to provide that final council approval, provided that the companies meet the conditions. They have to sign the agreements before council will endorse the final (approval).” Algonquin Power’s ‘Centreville Solar’ proposed project would see a 40-60 kilowatt installation located on a parcel of land located southeast of Centreville, located near the intersection of Centreville Road and Barrett Road. BluEarth’s ‘Loyalist Solar Project’, meanwhile, would be divided over a number of different properties, most of which are located southeast of Centreville in the vicinity of Centreville Road, Hinch Road and Ratti Road. The project would produce up to 54MW of electricity.

SOLAR FROM PAGE 1 At a packed regular meeting of council on Monday night, council members were presented with a litany of concerns surrounding the BluEarth and Algonquin Power proposals, including potential impacts on property values, wildlife habitat and groundwater, as well as questions surrounding the decommissioning of the sites when they reach their lifespans in 20 years. Further, many expressed frustration at the companies’ perceived lack of public consultation and communication with residents. While some of the presentations included suggestions on how council could better evaluate proposed solar projects in the township, others urged council to not only fight these solar projects, but to take that fight to the provincial government, which has opened the door to these kinds of installations with its push for more renewable energy. “Get off your asses and support us, and make sure we take this to the next level,” Reginald Wales, a Barrett Road resident, told council. Wales said he would move his family if the solar projects moved forward. “I

love this township,” he said. “Let’s try to keep it something that we can be respected for, and something we can enjoy.” Wales wasn’t the only local resident who said they were worried solar farms will destroy the township’s rural way of life and character. “As ratepayers, we wish to remain living in the natural environment in which we find ourselves, and in the heritage that is Stone Mills and uniquely Stone Mills,” said Peter Lewis, another resident living near the proposed solar installations. “Our Stone Mills neighbourhood, as yours is, is important to us. We do not wish to become a neighbourhood of glass, graphite and aluminum.” “A large corporate entity has invaded our community, and has set neighbour against neighbour, and has created discord among families. This is not lifestyle we desire for our neighbourhood or our township. Please help us deal with this,” said Julie Rahmer, another concerned resident. Before considering the proposed road use and community vibrancy agreements relating to the two solar proposals, council voted on whether or not it

N A PA N E E

would allow solar installations of any kind. Councillor John Wise put forward a motion indicating that Stone Mills council would entertain and/or endorse large-scale solar installations as long as township and residents’ concerns were addressed in the form of contractual agreements with the solar companies. Wise’s motion, which was seconded by Deputy Reeve Eric Smith, won the support of all but two council members; Kennedy and Martha Embury both voted ‘nay’ on the resolution. “We’ve got to make a decision. We’re just skirting the issue… clearly the proponents have not been able to deal with the public so far. So we’re going out and asking them to be co-operative now? I don’t think so,” said Embury before casting her dissenting vote. Some council members, however, said the draft agreements developed by township staff and the municipality’s solicitor should address public concerns surrounding the projects. “If we’re going to show some leadership here, what we’ve got to do is simply do it right,” said Wise, who underlined the need to move away from fossil fuels and toward renewable energy to supply our society’s electricity needs. “We have to address the legitimate concerns that have been

addressed to us, and come up with agreements that will satisfy those concerns. It’s that simple. If the public had a chance to read that agreement, particularly with screening and setbacks, they’d be happy with that aspect of it.” Deputy-clerk Roger Hogan told council that breaches of the agreements — which contain provisions relating to visibility screening and other concerns — can be enforced by the township, with costs borne by the project operators to take corrective action. Councillors also directed Hogan to include any additional concerns raised at Monday’s meeting to be included in the draft agreement, including provisions relating to potential hydrogeological contamination. Some council members also indicated that the framework used to develop these draft agreements could be used for future solar proposals in the future. Hogan did advise council that, based on the evaluation used by the Independent Electricity System Operator, he believed it would be unlikely that either of the solar projects would be approved without council’s endorsement. The IESO, however, does hold the ultimate approval authority, and could approve either or both projects with or without council’s endorsement.

Town applies for funding to improve College St. BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

A second Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund government funding application has been made by Deseronto in order to improve College Street. The municipality applied to the OCIF in 2014 but was unsuccessful. The application was for College Street, between Thomas and Dundas. Chief Administrative Officer Ellen Hamel recommended council apply for the funding a second time, for the same project, in hopes of securing 90 per cent funding. In 2014 the estimated

cost of the project was $430,300, with a funding request of $387,270 for 90 per cent. The municipal contribution was to be $43,030. Green Galloway Group has agreed to amend the 2014 estimates for the updated OCIF application at no cost to the municipality. OCIF applications must be either: road resurfacing, water, wastewater, or bridges. “College Street between Thomas Street and Dundas Street is a priority area as it is in a state of disrepair and is creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians and traveling public,” Hamel’s recommendation to council reads.

Mac House recognizes helpers, past and present

BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

OLUNTEERS, contributors, staff and supporters of the Macpherson House, past and present, gathered in the gardens on Friday to celebrate the recently refurbished historical house. Lennox and Addington County held an appreciation tea in the garden on Friday for those that have helped shape the house, past and present. The county took ownership of the house last fall and, since then, has done much to restore the historic building. A bench has been added to the gardens in support of the volunteers, and two plaques have been dedicated to the site. “For 50 years, the L&A Historical Society and the Allan Macpherson House management committee raised funds for the operation and maintenance of the house. Volunteers staffed the house and provided demonstrations on everything from bread making to spinning and weaving. Volunteers worked hard to maintain the immaculate gardens, events were organized that became traditions, and painting (events) were held to paint the exterior of the house,” said L&A Warden Gord Schermerhorn. “In many cases volunteers contributed for years, some spending decades since the house was opened.”

Jane Lovell, chair of the Greater Napanee Heritage Committee, and Dennis Mills, vice-chair of the committee, presented and read the plaque, which can be seen at the back (roadside) of the Macpherson House. Kris Shetler, from Shetler and Sargeant Contracting, volunteered his time to paint an outbuilding at the Yarker sports complex to help restore the park.

Volunteers give rec field an upgrade BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Community members in Yarker are fundraising and working to restore recreation facilities, while avoiding increasing costs to taxpayers. In July, 13 people met at the Yarker ball diamond with the same goal: to repair and restore the community’s recreation sites. That day the canteen was repainted, as were the stands, trees were trimmed, grass was cut; fencing was restored and some was removed; glass and rocks were removed; garbage was cleaned; and plans were made to restore power to the site. “We’re just a few individuals who are concerned about the community and want to see facilities being used again,” said Trevor Abrams, one of those working toward restoring the ball diamond, soccer field, and canteen area. “This particular facility has been quite run down, there’s a lot of graffiti, a lot of vandalizing, the electrical had all been gutted. The ball diamond has lights all around it but none of them are hooked up to power because someone has actually stolen the electrical copper wire from the junction box and stole the junction box. The place has been vandalized and it’s overgrown,”

he said. Abrams said the small group of volunteers is adamant that they want to restore the grounds without relying in municipal funds. Still, volunteers have met with the municipality to inform them of their plans, and they say Stone Mills Township fully supports them. “We’re working with the township to do what we can,” Abrams explained. “We’re not going to put this on the township, we will raise the funds ourselves. That’s kind of the point with the community stepping up and saying, ‘Let’s get this done. Let’s show this can be done without having a lot of tax dollars put into it.’” Local carpenters and electricians have already provided their time, supplies and equipment free of cost. Next month, a fundraiser ball tournament will take place at the Yarker ball diamond to raise funds to purchase supplies to get to the lights up and running, as well as other materials to restore the grounds. The fundraiser will take place Sept. 27 and will include a 50/50 draw, bouncy castles and games for kids, a dunk tank, and more. For more information on the fundraiser, restoration, or to get involved, visit the Facebook Page: Yarker Sports Complex Restoration Project.

Letter to the Editor

We should say ‘yes’ to solar project Requests for approval of solar farms are pending in Greater Napanee and Stone Mills, which have attracted controversy. This is surprising because opposition to solar power is rare. Municipalities everywhere welcome the additional industrial assessment they generate. At least seven solar farms are proposed in Kingston where council routinely approves solar projects with no opposition. A more benign industrial use would be hard to find. Solar panels don’t move; they don’t make any noise and they don't emit fumes. They are low profile with less visibility than, say,

Shoppers Drug Mart, which was constructed on Class 1 agricultural land with council’s full blessing. No solar farm anywhere is proposed for prime farmland. Our county welcomed the TransCanada gas plant which will soon contribute another four per cent to our tax base, despite the fact that it emits noise and fumes and is visible for miles. Trans Canada made huge contributions to local infrastructure projects. Like the gas plant, solar proponents are offering contributions to the municipality of up to $120,000 per year plus a $500,000 upfront payment. To put this

into perspective, in Greater Napanee, this is equivalent to five per cent of tax revenue in the first year and one per cent per year for the next 25 years. That’s just for one project. Tax revenue from the gas plant and solar farms is found money and badly needed here. Our provincial government has decided to procure 300 MW of green energy in 2015 under the FIT program somewhere in Ontario. If we reject this, we will make some other municipality very happy. Hubert Hogle, Greater Napanee

Letter to the Editor

Solar energy push bad for township, province Centreville councillors have decided to entertain these solar companies who have not been forthcoming or transparent with residents or councillors. The whole premise of solar as a way of future does not explain why, now, the government is willing to make every hydro rate payer pay a premium for power. At 15 times or more dollars the going rate per kilowatt hour, the price is not sustainable. Ontario currently generates and exports 40 per cent of its power to Quebec/USA. With no need for power, let alone ridiculously priced power, why pay these companies to get rich? The Green Energy Act is a method the Ontario government employs to build another tax base. Since our government has put us in twice the debt of California, they are scrambling to find ways to make us pay. With no need for green power (that is not green to the countryside), they are destroying 1,000s of acres and turning them into fields of plastic and cement. Why lease land at a higher rate when purchasing is less expensive? With decommissioning, they will not pay to remove these panels nor put the land

back the way it was. To put the owners on the township to decide how this is done is wrong. Council’s decision was to attach decommissioning to the owner of the installation. This will not work as they can sell it for $1 to a small company who can easily be bankrupt therefore putting the taxpayer and hydro rate payer on the hook. In 20-plus years, what will be the cost of removing all structures plus the sixfoot deep supports that are filled with concrete. It will be in the millions to tens of million of dollars per site? Think I am wrong? Wait till it plays out and in 20-plus years it will be realized. There is no plan to compensate home owners for their devalued properties. Once retired and cannot manage stairs, can they sell and afford to move? No. Their home value is diminished. Residents that live near and next to these huge industrial installations get zero when these companies reap huge profit; one site over a 20-year period can make over $1 billion. Would you invest $110 million (cost of one site) to make less in 20 years? With solar all over Centreville very few will move here, more will leave this already low-tax-base area. Solar companies pay no

taxes on their installations to the townships. Since they do not own the land and solar panels are not structures, there is no tax to be made. To be fair, what the companies have offered is minuscule to the profits they will make from damaging our township. Their offers vary widely depending on what they can get away with. Future and even current technology (France) will build smaller-footprint power generation that work 24 hours per day. All the solar installations proposed cannot close one coal plant, as they only produce during sunlight hours and very little energy in comparison. We have been inundated with mistruths in the form of advertising that nuclear power is ‘bad’. It is clean, cheap and reliable energy. Ontario should have built more plants years ago and this was known to Hydro and the governments of the day prevented this. Centreville has been turned into the ‘wild west’ with money and greed. We were not looking for easy money before from any company, so why say ‘yes’ now just because they knock on our door? Some feel they will be left out, which is wrong. Companies most diffi-

cult acquisition is to find land to build these installations. Solar and wind is a bad idea. Everyone knows the price of the power is far too high, but the destruction and devaluation of land in our township should be the paramount consideration. Seems councillors do not have residents best interests in mind when they made the decision to accept these evasive companies. Only public pressure can stop this roller coaster. Everyone in Stone Mills should petition their councillors. Once these things are built, there is no going back. Did I mention at least three years of heavy construction, 24 hours a day? I firmly believe we have a legal right to expect activities that are normal to Stone Mills Township. That is farming. Solar is not farming but industrial sprawl. Enjoy the outdoors while the dust, noise, lights and trucking never stop. Was it with those few gold coins? I built here three years ago and now wish I had west of County Road 41 in another municipality. I love where I am but not to be surrounded by solar and to live with trucking and constant machinery noise. Will Mathieson, Stone Mills

‘Anti’ staff picks SIDE from ‘Staff Picks’ suggested by other library staff members, close to 90 per cent of the books I mention in this column are books that I have actually read and enjoyed. At the very least, I thought them to be OK and somehow worthy of reading. There are, of course, many books that I simply do not like and choose not to mention. That said, I truly believe in the adage that there is a book for every person and a person for every book; just because a book is not for me doesn’t mean someone else won’t find value in it. In the spirit of this philosophy, I’ll outline a few of my recent reading letdowns and why you might just be the reader to enjoy them. Boo by Neil Smith is an imaginative story about a bullied teenage boy who wakes up in a quirky version of heaven restricted to 13-year-olds. It is definitely a ‘YA’ crossover, meaning that while we have classified it as adult fiction, it would just as suitable in the young adult section of the library. The book felt juvenile to me and I didn’t think the characters were well-developed or believable. Readers on Goodreads, however, almost universally loved this book. Some considered it life-changing, and others believed that it could be read on more levels than one. I have to assume I wasn’t reading it on the right level. Try this book if you appreciate cre-

ative world-building and enjoy reading from the perspective of characters possibly on the autism spectrum (think Don from The Rosie Project or Christopher from The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time).

Catherine Coles Coles Notes

assignment targets the estranged daughter of a powerful televangelist, he is steered onto a dangerous path where he is forced to travel between real and virtual worlds in order to live to kill another day. Yes, it is as weird as it sounds – too weird for me in fact. However, if you are a fan of Ernest Cline and Chuck Palahniuk, you’ll probably love Shovel Ready – lucky for you it is the first book of a series in progress. The List by Joanne Bolouri is UK chick-lit, which I normally love. It follows Phoebe, a 30-something woman living in Glasgow who has had it with heartbreaking relationships, instead deciding to spend a calendar year focusing on fulfilling all of her sexual fantasies. This book was predictable and about a 100 pages too long, but the biggest deal-breaker was the ridiculous, unrealistic and often frustrating characters. The writing, I’ll admit, was actually pretty funny, so I would suggest it for readers who are looking for cheeky, sexually-explicit chick-lit, rather than the genre standard of a clever, charming narrator you can root for. You can reserve these titles at www.countylibrary.ca or at any of our eight library branches across the County of Lennox and Addington.

My issue with The Descent by Tim Johnston likely stemmed from my own expectations rather than the book itself. When it was released earlier this year, it was touted as a psychological thriller about a teenage girl who is abducted while distance running in the Rocky Mountains. The reality is that the majority of the book instead focuses on the family drama and martial breakdown in the wake of the incident. If you are in the mood for a descriptive, heart-wrenching character study with a hint of grit, give this book a try; just don’t expect a plot-driven thriller. Shovel Ready by Adam Sternbergh is equal parts sci-fi, noir mystery and crime novel. It takes place in a future-New York, after bombs have turned the city into a wasteland. Our protagonist (or possibly antagonist?), Catherine Coles is Manager of Spademan, is a surly ex-garbage man turned hitman. When his latest Library Services for L&A County.

n The owner of a local watering hole said that while new liquor laws allowed him to sell alcohol during the supper hour of 4:30-6 p.m., he didn’t particularly agree with it. C.C. Clarke, owner of the Paisley Hotel on John Street, said he believed that allowing alcohol to be served then was “not fair to family life.” Despite his misgivings, he said he would sell alcoholic beverages to customers during that time. “With the extra hours alloted for beverage room imbibing, the customer never goes home until midnight. His family often does not see him until Sunday,” he said. n An attempt by a couple of youths to ride a pony had fatal consequences for the animal. The young pony strangled to death in a field off Highway 41 near Napanee. The boys, ages nine and 11, threw a rope with a slip knot over the pony’s head. When they attempted to pull the animal towards them, the rope tightened, the pony became frightened and bolted. A passerby attempted to remove the rope with a broken salt shaker, but by the time it was cut, the animal had died. The boys were not charged by police.

n The Napanee Region Conservation Authority was in the process of selecting a local construction firm to undertake repairs to the Colebrook dam. Ultimately, the NRCA selected W.V. Wallans of Carrying Place to make the necessary repairs, which were expected to take place in the middle of August. “During the construction, the water in the head pond will be drawn down,” said NRCA General Manager Peter Gill. “The authority will make every effort to maintain the normal downstream flow, but landowners who may be affected… should plan accordingly.” n About 2,000 people attended the annual Governor Simcoe Day at Yarker. A mile-long parade in the half-mile-long village started the day’s activities. George Lockwood of Enterprise led the way in his steam engine tractor. Fire trucks from local municipalities and the 560 Legion Fife and Drum band also participated. Former MP Douglas Alkenbrack, who dressed in period costume to resemble John Graves Simcoe, was the guest of honour for the festivities.

County preps for next geocaching event Visitors from across North America and beyond expected to attend two-day festival in L&A

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Geocachers from across the world will be setting their co-ordinates for Lennox and Addington later this month as the county gets set to host its annual ‘Mega’ Event. Starting Aug. 21 with a concert in Conservation Park featuring Rudy and Saddle Up, the two-day event is expected to draw upwards of 750 people into the region. Once here, they’ll embark on the 21st Century version of scavenger hunt-

ing known as geocaching — the sport of finding caches hidden throughout the region using global position system devices. Lennox and Addington County’s event is considered a favourite among participants who are attracted by its ‘mega’ status. In geocaching circles, a ‘mega’ event is one that draws over 500 participants. Only three events in Canada have garnered the ‘mega’ status before, as awarded by the game’s Seattle-based creator Groundspeak. “Having mega status definitely helps spread the

word about our event to a worldwide audience,” said Rob Plumley, economic development officer with L&A County. “This year we’ll have visitors to L&A County from British Columbia to Newfoundland to Nunavut and multiple U.S. states as well. We even have a family coming from France that scheduled their North American visit around our event. We’re really excited about that.” The event has turned into a real boon for local businesses, as it draws in hundreds of tourists who

eat, sleep and shop in the region for the weekend. Over 1,500 caches are hidden throughout the county with more being added every year. It’s that constant updating that helps make geocaching a huge tourism draw not only for their annual event by throughout the summer months as well. “Joe and Theresa Tisdale from the L&A County Geocachers and his crew do a great job of keeping the event fresh so that visitors return year after year,” said Plumley. “This year we have

hidden more than 50 new caches that will be published for this event. They include new lab caches, night caches, earth caches, and a ‘Sir John’s L&A’ game that takes participants on a tour of some of the historic spots throughout the county.” An assortment of merchandise, including an ‘L&A MEGA’ trackable geocoin will also be for sale. Several prizes will be up for grabs for geocachers who are first to find certain caches and they are even expecting a visit from Signal the Frog, the official mascot of geo-

caching. The event gets underway Aug. 21 with the outdoor concert starting at 6:30 p.m. Following the country/classic rock concert concert the Napanee BIA will be hosting an outdoor movie night. The next day things get started at 8 a.m., starting with a short introduction at Southview Public School and runs until 5 p.m. Games and activities will take place in the school’s gym throughout the day. Ferry frustrations fail to sink Island concert series BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Delayed ferry services have impacted Amherst Island’s Waterside Summer Series concert attendance; however, that hasn’t stopped them from bringing in top of the line performers. Bev Harris, one of the Waterside Summer Series planners, said they are used to having sold-out concerts but this year has been different – there have been a few empty seats at each per-

formance. Harris said smaller ferries this year has resulted in longer wait times, which has deterred tourism on the island, especially for the concert series. “We have been impacted by the smaller ferry. Because our venue is in the local St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, probably at least 50 per cent if not a little bit more of our audience comes from the mainland. There have been long lineups and people not being able to get on the ferries on Amherst Island… So certainly this

has had an impact on our audience numbers this year but the concerts have been just as top-notch as they always have been and the people that come have certainly loved it,” said Harris. “We’re rather accustomed to selling out our concerts. The church only seats 140. I think that’s something the mainlanders really enjoy about it has been coming over on the ferry on a nice summer evening, often people will bring a picnic supper and go to the concert. It’s kind of the whole

experience and being in this small venue where they get to be up close and personal with the musicians,” she added. “To go from one season to the next and to have a drop of about 30 per cent, the ferry is the only thing we can put it down to,” said Harris. The last installment in the series takes place this Sunday, with violinist Jonathan Crow and pianist Philip Chiu. “We have one concert left, which will be terrific,

it’s Jonathan Crow who is the concert master of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and a violinist… and he will be coming with Philip Chiu who is a concert pianist and they will be doing a duo presentation,” Harris said. Harris has already booked most of next year’s performers and says it will be another great year. There will be three performances in July and two in August. “We’ve got a great lineup for next year. … I pretty well have next season lined

up,” she said. “I think one of the reasons why performers come and love to come back is that although it’s a small audience they’re very appreciative of the quality of musicians we have coming here.” This is the 22nd season for the Waterside Summer Series. Crow and Chiu will be performing this Sunday and tickets are $35 each. For more information about the concert series, or to book tickets for a performance, visit www.watersidemusic.ca.

Miss Emily to play at second Music in the Garden BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Miss Emily will be performing at the Macpherson House later this month for the second performance in the Music in the Garden series. Miss Emily, also known as the Emily Fennell Band, is a “soulful” blues singer. The Kingston-based performer has released four original, full-length albums,

her latest of which includes contributions by The Tragically Hip’s Gord Sinclair and Rob Baker, Chris Brown of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, and Eric Schenkman of the Spin Doctors. “She’s originally from Prince Edward County but she has some family roots and ties in Lennox and Addington County, not far from this house (the Macpherson House) so we thought that was fitting as

well,” said Stephen Paul, Director of Community and Development Services for Lennox and Addington County, who is organizing the Music in the Garden Series. “She’s fairly known in the area and has done quite a few things not only here but across the province as well. We’re pleased to be able to highlight her,” Paul added. In 2011, Miss Emily played to 25,000 people alongside The Tragically

Hip, Sam Roberts Band and The Trews in Bobcaygeon, Ont. The next year she joined Doc Walker on the Holiday Train and toured across Canada. She has played a variety of venues, from large festivals to small theatres throughout Canada and the United States. “We think she will be a great fit for our Music in the Garden series at the House,” said Paul. According to Miss Emily’s website, Rob Baker

of The Tragically Hip has nothing but good words to say about her. A statement from him on her website says: “Miss Emily is a truly gifted singer. Her voice is rich and soulful — she can slip from sweet and seductive to commanding and fierce and back again in the tradition of the finest blues and soul singers. And like those great and rare legendary talents she is well seasoned in the art of performance having paid more

Spinner puts her craft on display

BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA

In keeping with traditional trades, a local wool spinner brought her wheel and natural fibres to the Macpherson House last week to give demonstrations on spinning. Beth Fisher, based out of Tamworth, has been spinning wool and other fibres since her teenage years and is now finishing a six-year Master Spinning course. She has worked with a number of fibres, including hemp, flax, cotton, silk, and hair from dogs, cats, sheep, alpaca and goats. “I concentrate mostly on alpaca because that’s what my business is, but I have had sheep and goats in the past. I like natural fibres,” Fisher said. “It’s a craft that for a while there it was sort of dying out but it’s really coming back and it’s being treated as an art form,” she added, noting people of all ages are now taking a liking to spinning. Fisher has been selftaught in wool spinning. She is one of the few that took an interest in spinning all on her own as a young adult. She was working at a yarn store when her family bought Fisher her first wheel and she has been spinning ever since. “Nowadays there’s a lot of books and online videos and there’s people you can go to, I didn’t have that so it was by trial and error and this one single book was all that I had, The Ashford Book of Spinning, and that’s how I started. It was tough,” Fisher admits. “I was selftaught when I lived up north because there wasn’t really anyone around me that spun, it’s amazing that I kept doing it.” Like most spinners, Fisher seeks out original and rare fibres to spin. In doing so she has located a woman in Yarker who has Lincoln Longwool Sheep. “They are critically endangered,” Fisher said. She went on to explain how spinners have helped to bring awareness to rare and endangered animals by seeking out new materials and bringing light to such issues. On top of spinning, Fisher also dyes her own materials. “I enjoy the dying. It’s very meditative,” she said.

he benefits of after-school activities are numerous, so help your child choose a fun way to learn, develop talents and skill, and build confidence! There are social, physical and psychological advantages for children who participate in after-school activities. Rather than allowing kids to spend all of their leisure time parked in front of the television or playing video games, parents who encourage children to participate in activities outside of the home are aiding in their development. Afterschool activities can change a child's life for the better and have multiple benefits. Physical activity With the growing problem of childhood obesity, children who participate in outdoor activities and sports get the exercise they need and develop habits that can help them avoid this problem and keep themselves physically fit. Sports also encourage teamwork and fair play, teaching kids valuable lessons in cooperation and respect for others. The children develop more coordination and are building healthier habits. Creativity Arts, music, crafts, collecting... These are all activities that encourage creativity, but also help children

learn problem-solving skills and encourage their natural curiosity. Children can explore their individual talents and feel greater confidence as they discover their abilities. Stress release In an increasingly complex world, even children can feel stress. They are expected to do well in school and can often be subject to peer pressure. Activities that take place in a no-pressure environment and are just for fun are a good way to relax — a healthy method for dealing with stress. In these group settings, kids can shed shyness and gain social skills through observation and casual interaction with other children. Building confidence Learning any new skill is an excellent way to build self-confidence. After-school activities teach specific skills, but are also an opportunity for kids to learn social skills like cooperation, negotiation and conflict resolution. Participation in these activities can subtly show them how to appropriately interact with others. They learn how to think on their feet and develop better communication skills while discovering new things they enjoy and can excel at. Teamwork Throughout our lives we need to

They answer questions about hospice and pro-

vide information on services. Jane said it’s a lovely way to spend an afternoon with friends, family or enjoying the gardens on your own. They currently have sunflowers, gladiolas, and zinnias for picking. “It’s really fun to watch, it’s a bit magical actually. It’s a delicious thing to be able to wander down and look at the way the colours go together and maybe try for some fragrance and see the texture of leaves and put together a bouquet,” said

Jane. “Kids run around looking at butterflies and bugs and toads and frogs, so it’s a pleasant, easy space.” Jane said the gardens also attract many hummingbirds and woodpeckers, among other birds, that people enjoy watching in the gardens. “We had our first (event) Sunday, it was lovely. The weather was beautiful, people were just happy to be here. Some people renewed old acquaintances; others had been here for the first time,” said Jane,

adding that the number of visitors in their gardens has increased each year. Flower cutting is free of charge but Jane and Peter ask for donations to be made for hospice, which they divide among Hospice Lennox and Addington and Hospice Kingston. Jane and Peter Good open their gardens at Avenstone each Sunday in August between 2 and 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.gardeningandgiving.ca.

Solutions for low ceilings

Ashley Espinoza-Staff

The Newburgh-Camden Lions Club held their 6th annual Grand Old Enterprise Country Jamboree at the Centreville Fairgrounds over the weekend. The event was filled with local talent, including Kelli Trottier, Steve Piticco, Tracey Brown and Randall Prescott.

Home designers are getting away from low ceilings in new builds, but there are still many homes that seem to have low ceilings. A lot of homeowners don’t like this type of look and want to change it. If the ceilings n your home look small and make you feel cramped there are a few ways that you can fix it. The first and most recommended type of improvement for a low ceiling is painting it bright white. White paint increases the sense of height and it is quite reflective which will open up the room and make it seem a lot more spacious. There are two types of finishes that are recommended by designers. The first is to make a gloss finish that will reflect the light from the ceiling thus giving it the impression of height and space. The opposite choice is a matte finish that makes the ceiling ‘disappear’ and helps make any faults that the painters have made invisible. If you are not a fan of the white colour and think that it will create a lot of cleaning chores, you can also use lighter and cool

Merola Tahamtan

Design Time pastel range shade colours. The most important thing is to choose a colour that is lighter than the one on the walls. Vertical stripes on the walls can also create the sensation of height and open up the room some more. You can either paint the stripes on the wall or hang a striped wallpaper. Avoid the installation of ceiling fans, large light fixtures and chandeliers. The sense of height will be disrupted if you install them and the flatness that helps

it will disappear. You’ll probably wonder where you will put the lighting then? The wall is an ideal place to have wall sconces. Distribute the light on evenly making sure not to leave dark spaces because even a dark corner will make the room look smaller. Full length curtains will also help with this project. Hang them as high to the ceiling as possible to achieve the best effect. Large mirrors are always an option as well if you don’t want to repaint anything and still want to make the room look bigger and more spacious. Avoid wall to wall mirrors. A large mirror framed in a bold frame will do the trick as well. These tips are pretty simple to do and some will not cost you much money to install. Host Express rolling, second team faltering SJ Express second at midway point

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Napanee’s Express teams were headed in two very different directions through the midway point of round robin play at the U21 Fast Pitch Championship, being held this week at the Napanee Fairgrounds. For the host Shoeless Joe’s Express it was full speed ahead at 3-1 while the Abundant Insulation Express were struggling to get on track, going 0-4 through Tuesday’s action. The defending silver medalists Shoeless Joe’s Express’ one loss came in heartbreaking fashion. After Barry Hogeboom’s

three-run blast had given Napanee a 6-3 lead in the top of the eighth, the New Hamburg/Stratford Cubs stormed back with four in the bottom half to walk off with a 7-6 victory. Steve Lyons took Eric Morgan deep with two outs in the inning with a three-run blast to steal the victory. “It was a good ball game,” said Express head coach Brent Mills. “We were up, kind of faltered a bit in extra innings and the kid put a good swing (on the walk-off home run). It was a real good ball game, we just came out on the wrong end of it. Nothing we can’t recover from.” They bounced back quickly, defeated their crosstown rival Express 124 in five innings before winning a back-and-forth 9-4 decision over the Saskatoon Diamondbacks to close out Tuesday night. On Monday they opened

the tournament with an 8-0 defeat of the Saskatoon Bullets. “The nerves are definitely out of the way,” Mills said of the team approaching the midway mark of the tournament. Through the first four games pick up Jeff St. Pierre led the team with nine RBI, followed by Hogeboom (6) and Taylor Brown (5). Hogeboom had launched two home runs, tied with Mackenzie Pringle for the team lead. St. Pierre, Cole Bolton and Morgan had each recorded a win. As a team they batted .367. As for the Abundant Insulation Express they are in danger of missing out on the medal round after a rough 0-4 start, all mercy losses. They entered Wednesday’s action in dire straights, with little room for error.

EXPRESS | Host team in the playoff hunt CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 “We’re a first year team with a couple of midgets on the team,” said Express coach Tony Douglas. “We’re young, it’s a good experience for us. It’s tough because we all want to win, but we’re going to play hard the whole tournament and let the chips land where they may.” Brandon Tucker and Grant Fry were hitting an even .500 through the first four games while Tye McNish had the team’s lone home run. Tucker led the way with four RBI.

If it were any consolation the Abundant Insulation Express did face some of the tougher teams in their first four games, losing 13-2 to the Diamondbacks, 10-2 to the Quebec Express as well as 12-4 and 8-1 to Napanee and the Irma Tigers. The latter two teams are the defending silver and gold medalists teams from 2014. Round robin play wraps up today with the top six teams moving into Saturday’s playoff round. For next season he’s looking to ramp it up to eight or nine times, all while balancing school work. With the Canadian Age Group Championships behind him he’ll take a

short break from the competitive season, taking the rest of August off before getting right back at it in September. “I improved a lot this last season,” said Gilpin when asked to reflect on the last 10 months. “I took a lot of time off my races and made lots of new friends which is always important.” “My coaches, friends and swim families have all been really supportive and have always been there to push me to reach my limits and make me a better swimmer,” he added. Looking even further down the road he’s set his sights high. Having already competed against Canada’s best he’s hoping to soon be

representing the entire country. “I’m hoping to qualify for the next Pan Am games,” he said.

He’ll have plenty opportunities between now and then to qualify for those games, which will be held in Lima, Peru in 2019.

Local resident John ‘Sean’ Sheehan isn’t your typical snowbird, nor your typical jogger. Despite the fact he doesn’t make long-distance running part of his everyday routine, Sheehan, 74, has racked up a number of five-kilometre race wins while ‘vacationing’ in Florida; just last winter, he collected 11 firsts, four seconds and one third in 16 races in the senior age category. Despite his success, Sheehan says he did little competitive running in his earlier years, and still doesn’t do much in the way of regular jogging. Here, Sheehan (second from right) displays his medals with his Florida sponsors, the Americano Tiki Bar and Resort.

Vanalstine, Switzer and Crawford come out on top at demo derby Beaver Staff

The results of the demolition derby at the Napanee Fair, held Aug. 3, are as follows: In the first mini car heat, Mike McGrayne of Shannonville finished in first, Cody Meeks of Deseronto finished second and Brock Bryanton of Napanee finished third. In the second mini car heat, Shane Meeks of Deseronto finished first, Cody Vanalstine of Napanee came in second, and Eric Conlin of Frankford collected third. In the third mini car

heat, Kingston’s Chris Walker came out on top, with Becky Wood of Napanee and Tyler Weatherdon of Amherstview finishing second and third, respectively. ‘Hard luck’ mini car qualifiers — whose cars were still running but finished outside the top three in the heats — were Josh Lambert of Tamworth, Jessie Wood in his ‘Cancer Sucks’ car and Ryan Kellar. In the mini feature, Napanee’s Vanalstine came out on top, followed by Lambert and Shane Meeks. In the big car feature, Adam Switzer of Napanee came in first, followed by

Jamie Vanhooser of Napanee in second and Lance Brinklow of Shannonville in third. Travis Crawford of Tamworth won the truck feature, with James Vanhooser of Napanee coming in second. Jordan Wood-Schultz of Gananoque won the award for best decorated, while Conlin was given the award for the competitor who travelled the furthest distance to take part. Derby organizers thank Pete Joyce for composing and singing the ‘Napanee Demolition Derby Song’ to kick off the event.

Using your GPS to find hidden treasures

BY ROB PLUMLEY

Special to the Beaver I can never find my car keys. I lose golf balls in the fairway. Locating ketchup in the fridge is nearly impossible for me. For these reasons I find it very ironic that I help plan and organize numerous geocaching activities within Lennox and Addington County. You see, the whole premise of geocaching is to locate items that are hidden in plain sight — something that I am painfully inept at doing. For those who don’t know what it is, geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices and smartphones. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers called geocaches and share their ‘finding’ experience online. Lennox and Addington County has quickly become one of the go-to locations for geocachers in Canada. Chances are you unknowingly walk by these geocaches regularly as there are about 1,500 containers of various sizes hidden within our borders. Geocaching in our coun-

dance surpassed 700 people, and it is expected that the numbers will equal or surpass that mark this year. People are visiting from across Canada with representation from the provinces of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia and Nunavut, as well as from several U.S. States. There is also a family attending from Rhône-Alpes in France who planned their North American vacation to coincide with the event. The home base for the event is at Southview Public School in Napanee. After a morning check-in, people head to all corners of the county for a fun day of geocaching. Most return to the school by 4 p.m. to share stories and for their chance to win a great assortment of L&A County prizes. I recently went on my first geocaching excursion in an attempt to experience first-hand what so many people enjoy about the Submitted game: the thrill of the hunt. Geocaches are often hidden in plain sight but are The trip would also serve as easy to miss. Can you spot the container in this an opportunity try and conquer my inability at finding picture? things. ty is highlighted by a popu- 22. It is one of only three I contacted Joe Tisdale, lar annual gathering. The ‘mega’ events in Canada, or ‘Coman123’ as he’s 2015 Discover L&A County meaning that more than 500 referred to in the geocaching MEGA Geocaching Event people are expected to world. He agreed to show me takes place this year on Au. attend. Last year atten- the ropes. Joe is a local geo-

caching ‘guru’ who has more than 6,100 finds in his geocaching career. If I can’t find a cache, surely he could give me some tips and point me in the right direction. We headed to Roblin to try and locate five water caches hidden along the banks of the Salmon River, placed by a geocacher with the handle ‘curl4u’. After launching the canoe we took a leisurely paddle toward our first destination. The GPS beeped when we got close and I began looking in the overhanging trees and along the shore hoping to find my first geocache container. “Found it,” Joe said after less than a minute of searching. Yes, there it was — a small film canister. I guess experience pays off. I was 0 for 1. A few hundred metres down the river the GPS beeped again. Seconds later a, “there it is” from Joe. Huh, this is harder than I thought. Zero for 2. Minutes later I was 0 for 3, then 0 for 4. This game was beginning to remind me of my fastball batting average. There was one more geocache to find on this trip, and I was determined that this one would be located by yours truly. When the GPS beeped, I guessed that the

container was somewhere on a fallen tree that was partially submerged in the river on my left. When we reached the branch… holy cow, there it was: my first unassisted ‘find’. Whether Joe kept quiet and let me locate it on my own I’ll never know for sure, but my paddle back to the car was a satisfying one nonetheless. Maybe I’ll be able to apply my newly-found expertise at locating things the next time I misplace my iPhone. Probably not. In all seriousness, geocaching really is a fun pastime that allows you to discover places off the beaten path that you otherwise may never have known about. If you like to experience the outdoors, geocaching could be a perfect fit. For information about geocaching opportunities in Lennox and Addington County visit www.LandAGeocaching.com, or better yet, come out and learn more at our event on Aug. 22. Rob Plumley is the Community Development Officer for Lennox and Addington County.

Thursday, August 13, 2015 T H E N A PA N E E B E AV E R RE4 / HOMEFINDER Even those investors with contracting ties, and those tenants will have a host to maximize their investments. MCC - Real estate has historically remained a sound investment, boasting a long-term appreciation rate that makes it a worthwhile investment for those who can withstand temporary setbacks in housing prices and hold on to their properties over the long haul. The following are a few things potential real estate investors should consider as they decide if investing in real estate is right for them. PeRSOnal abIlITY - Real estate investors typically have tenants, and those tenants inevitably have needs. Investors who have experience as contractors may not find it difficult to

renovate a property and make it more attractive to tenants, nor are they likely to be inconvenienced when minor issues on the property need to be addressed. Investors with no such experience will need to hire contractors to do the work for them, cutting into potential profits down the road. In addition, investors who don't have the ability and/or the time to address minor issues like a clogged drain or a drafty window on their own will need to hire a property management firm to tend to such needs. Such firms are effective, but also expensive, further cutting into your profits.

Potential investors who already have full plates at work and at home may not be able to devote the time necessary to make the most of their real estate investments, and therefore might be better off finding another way to invest their money.
