Greater Napanee council voted not to support a 300acre EDF EN Canada solar project due to it being on agricultural land and not receiving full support from neighbours and the community. Two large solar projects sought out municipal support at a special council meeting on Tuesday but only one of the two projects was successful in securing council’s blessing to move forward. The EDF EN Canada proposal, located north of County Road 9, did not receive council support in a 5-2 vote, but the Ontario Power Generation/Lennox Solar Project proposal, located on Hwy. 33, did win council’s endorsement. Ward 1 Councillor Mike Schenk moved both motions, stating he is not against solar energy but he is against ground-mounted solar projects in the wrong location. He said EDF EN is not proposed on an ideal location, whereas Lennox Solar is. “I deal with every project individually,” said Schenk, before expressing why is he against EDF EN. “I’m not in favour of it. First of all it’s on agricultural land; some of the best land we have out on County Road 9. I wouldn’t want to be near it. Some of the practices that they did, did not impress me at all. Solar farms on agricultural land, I don’t feel is appropriate.” Ward 2 Councillor Max Kaiser agreed with Schenk, stating much of the property at the proposed EDF EN site is made up of “active fields” and should remain agricultural land.

bard family and I wanted to say how pleased I am, and my family is, that the Doornekamps are going to move ahead with this,” said McPherson Jr. “I’ve always said that Gibbard was always a quality product and I know Hank Doornekamp and his crew think the same way, so it’s kind of a great fit, only in a different way. I’m just happy to see the property not sit the way it is right now and to see it go forward and get developed,” McPherson Jr. added. Mayor Gord Schermerhorn agreed with McPherson Jr. saying, “I think your Dad would be proud.” This spring a hazardous material and insulator called vermiculite, which is known to contain asbestos, was found within the walls in the Gibbard Furniture Factory site. Still, council expressed its trust in Doornekamp Construction to clean up the vermiculite and to complete proper reports and approval from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Conservation Authority. “We certainly want it done right but we also want to get this moving along as soon as possible,” said Schermerhorn. The official plan amendment application involves re-designating the site for
residential use and to permit ground floor commercial use. The zoning bylaw amendment would permit a variety of residential forms permit commercial use, outline parking requirements, as well as a required setback from the top of the river bank to the building. The site plan control is to ensure a safe and functional site layout for the property. A number of studies and reports have been completed for the site already including a planning report, noise and vibration feasibility study, traffic impact study, a phase one environmental site assessment, stage 1 archaeological assessment, servicing report, limited slope stability analysis, and a parking study. Staff is now working to complete a phase two environmental site assessment and a record of site condition report. Alongside the residential redevelopment plan, Doornekamp Construction is also working on a 500-kw FIT water turbine project. The project is said to have the power to operate 200300 homes if it goes ahead. That energy would be fed back into the grid. Fifteen per cent of profits would go to Quinte Conservation, and five per cent of profits would go to the Town of Greater Napanee.
Loyalist Township, CUPE reach tentative deal Beaver Staff
According to a press release issued by the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 2150 yesterday morning, the union has reached an agreement on a tentative contract between it and Loyalist Township. CUPE 2150 represents 60 workers at the township. The tentative deal, which requires ratification by both union members and Loyalist Township, averts a possible labour disruption. According to CUPE 2150 President Alex Scott, the deal came after marathon negotiations with the township. The union members will vote on the new deal next week. Details of the agreement won’t be released until ratification takes place.

Stone Mills Township
Council endorses pair of solar projects Agreements with proponents outline requirements for setbacks, screening and financial terms BY SETH DUCHENE Editor
Two proposed new largescale solar installations both got endorsements from Stone Mills Township council. Stone Mills gave thumbs-up to each of the projects after securing agreements with BluEarth and Algonquin Power, respectively, which outline requirements for setbacks, visual barriers and other considerations. A handful of spectators were on hand for the special council meeting that took place in Centreville on Thursday night. Just more
SOLAR FROM PAGE 1 However, Ward 5 Councillor Shaune Lucas stressed the financial benefits to more solar projects in Greater Napanee and said he is in favour of the project. Ward 4 Councillor Carol Harvey agreed, saying solar power is the future and Greater Napanee should embrace it. Municipal support is only part of EDF EN Canada’s proposal process however; it is possible for the company to garner enough points in order to move forward with the project without council’s support. Deputy Mayor Marg Isbester later moved that council send a letter to the
than a week earlier — in front of a capacity audience — council voted that it would consider endorsing these two as well as future large scale solar projects providing proponents are willing to enter into enforceable contracts with the township. On Thursday night, those companies had signed those contracts, including a ‘community vibrancy agreement’ that would see each company provide $2,700 per year for each megawatt of electricity generated at each site. Deputy-clerk Roger Hogan indicated that, together, the deals would generate more than
$213,000 per year in revenue for the township. Algonquin Power’s ‘Centreville Solar’ proposed project would see a 25MW installation located on a parcel of land located southeast of Centreville, near the intersection of Centreville Road and Barrett Road. The original proposal put forward by Algonquin Power was for a 40-60 KW installation. BluEarth’s Loyalist Solar Project would be divided over a number of different properties, most of which are located southeast of Centreville in the vicinity of Centreville Road, Hinch Road and Ratti Road. The project would produce up to 54MW
of electricity. Before council passed the motions of support, Hogan outlined some of the main provisions of the agreement, including one proscribing minimum setbacks of 100 metres between the solar panels and the property line. “The general rule for them is that 100-metre setback would be required for all solar projects, he said, indicating that the setback may be reduced as long as there is adequate screening. The agreement also stipulates that, whether through natural or added screening, the project should not be able to be seen from the road or by neighbours. As part of the agree-
ment, the proponents must provide a security to ensure screening is sufficient; the municipality can draw from this security if screening isn’t suitable and the township is forced to remedy the situation. Hogan also noted that, before construction can begin at the site, the township must approve of the project’s site design and visual screening plan. With respect to decommissioning the site, the site owners must submit a decommissioning plan within 14 years of the site becoming commercially operational; further, the companies must provide a financial security to the township in
case the proponents default on that plan. Hogan indicated that, should a site be sold, the new owner must adopt these agreements with the township or the sale won’t be legal. “Basically, the agreement is following the project, not the proponent, Hogan told council. Both the BluEarth proposal and the Algonquin Power Proposal will need to secure contracts with the Independent Electricity System Operator in order to move forward. Even with the awarding of a contract, the proponents must meet a series of environmental and other requirements before operation can begin.
province asking for stricter guidelines for future solar proposals and to make them aware of how community members have been treated. “None of this has been easy for us. I’d like to make a motion that we contact the Minister of Energy, anybody from the province that would listen, and perhaps have them set out more stringent rules and regulations for everyone to follow. Even to the point that we display our displeasure in the way that some of our local residents have been approached in trying to get support, it just seems to be that the whole thing was very heavy-handed, Isbester said. She later amended her
motion to carbon copy Consumer and Corporate Affairs and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario. As for the Lennox Solar project, Schenk moved that council support the project with some amendments to the agreement, including a higher payout rate, ensuring grass is maintained according to the municipal bylaw, and that topsoil is not buried when the land is being prepared for the solar panels. “Loyalist Township and Stone Mills Township have similar (agreements with) renewable energies, Schenk said. He also noted that the location is more appropriate
for the proposed project and that the lands are not ideal for agriculture. “The reason why I approved this‌ first of all, that whole property is zoned for power generation,â€? Schenk said. Council moved Schenk’s motion regarding OPG/Lennox Solar in a 6-1 vote; however, council will now have to wait to hear back from OPG for approval on the amendments put forward by council. “This has to go to the province, signed by myself on behalf of the town, and it can’t have amendments,â€? Mayor Gord Schermerhorn said after a brief break to discuss the motion with municipal staff and council.
“So, a motion has passed to endorse it with the amendments so that means that we have to wait until OPG gets back to us to see if they’re in favour of the amendments and then we have to pass this motion as worded. We’ll have to leave it at that and be prepared that we may have to call an emergency council meeting
again to pass this motion, Schermerhorn advised. OPG/Lennox Solar is a Large Renewable Procurement project and the deadline for council to give municipal support, under the LRP guidelines, is Sept. 1. For more information on OPG/Lennox Solar, visit www.lennoxsolar.com.

Dairy farmers outline TPP concerns Group says pending trade deal could have serious ramifications for industry and local economy BY SETH DUCHENE Editor
Lennox and Addington dairy producers wanted to get a message across: an international trade deal that undermines supply management in the dairy industry will not be a ‘win’ for Canada, or for the local economy. The L&A Dairy Committee hosted a media day at Ripplebrook Farm east of Napanee on Tuesday, hoping to shed some light on the potential ramifications of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade deal currently being negotiated by the Canadian government. One of the issues facing dairy farmers, said Ripplebrook owner/operator and L&A Dairy Committee member Kevin MacLean, was the fact that the public aren’t up to speed on the TPP, nor are they fully aware of what the dairy industry means to the local, and national, economy. “About $22 million gross domestic product comes from L&A County (dairy producers), “MacLean said. “That’s 622 jobs, both direct and indirect, that come from our dairy industry. If you (extrapolate) them to the provincial level, we’re looking at 75,000 jobs in Ontario because of the dairy industry, and GDP or $6 billion. So, are we significant? Absolutely we are.” MacLean said that, despite the fact that critics of supply management argue that the system artificially inflates prices, Canadians pay less per litre for milk on average than most other countries. He also said that the dairy industry as it currently functions is inherently more healthy, more sustainable and more environmentally friendly since the product never needs to be transported very far. MacLean wasn’t going to get an argument from Hastings-Prince Edward MP and local Conservative
Seth DuChene-Staff
At Ripplebrook Farm are (from left) Ripplebrook owner and L&A Dairy Committee member Kevin MacLean, local MP Daryl Kramp and Dairy Farmers of Ontario regional representative Sid Atkinson. candidate Daryl Kramp, who expressed his own support for supply management. Kramp was invited to the event after dairy reps from L&A, Hastings, Prince Edward and Northumberland met with him earlier this year. MacLean said Kramp urged them to make their case to the broader public. In turn, the farmers asked Kramp to participate. “I think one of the challenges we’ve really identified with an issue such as this is, the public don’t know as much as they should. They don’t honestly recognize the true impact of supply management. They don’t recognize all of the benefits of supply management. We’ve got to get that message out more and more,” Kramp said. In terms of definitive answers as to just where the TPP talks were headed, Kramp admitted he’s not much more ‘in the know’ than those assembled at Ripplebrook. “Obviously they’re back (negotiating). Are they going to be successful? I don’t know. How far are
they going to go? I don’t know. I think they recognize that we have to preserve the integrity and the financial viability of this industry, because anything less than that would be self-destructive to the nation,” he said. Kramp said that he has received assurances from those closer to the negotiations that supply management in Canada will be protected, including from International Trade Minister Ed Fast. But while Kramp said he’s confident the supply management system will remain intact, he said he also has no doubt that there will still be some ramifications resulting from the TPP, if and when the massive trade deal is hammered out.
“There are other countries that have other interests too,” Kramp said. “Everybody thinks that each individual country is going to have that 100 per cent ‘win’ at the expense of someone else. That’s delusional. It’s not going to happen. But, we have to ensure that we minimize the damage and maximize the gain.” Kramp also noted that the Canadian government has walked away from negotiations when it couldn’t strike the right deal. MacLean said he and his fellow farmers aren’t blind to the fact that there could be changes in store as a result of the TPP. “We’ve been fighting it for years, through General Agreement on Tariff and Trade negotiations, through Article 11
negotiation, and we’re hoping that we’ll survive again,” he told the Beaver. “We gave a little of it on the CanadaEurope Trade Agreement, but then they also gave back a little bit — when they took a little away from us, allowing the import of cheese into this country, they also stopped the imports of pizza kits from the U.S. We expect, I would hope, the same kind of situation would happen. If they’re going to allow something into this country, which is possible, we’re hoping that they will give concessions on something else and give us something back.” Dairy Farmers of Ontario Communications Manager Laural Adams said that all the major parties in the current federal election campaign have expressed support for the continuation of Canada’s supply management system. That was confirmed by candidates who are currently running against Kramp in Hastings-Lennox and Addington when contacted by the Beaver. Although some candidates expressed concern over the secrecy surrounding the ongoing trade talks, they indicated that their parties would not sacrifice supply management in order to get a deal done. “A Liberal government will defend supply management in international trade negotiations like the TPP because we know this program provides economic security for agricultural communities,” said Mike Bossio, the local Liberal candidate. He also said that estab-
lishing a greater public presence is a wise step for local dairy farmers to take. “They need to organize, educate the public as to the importance of farming to Ontario and Canadians in general, and that way when they speak their voice will be loud enough and respected enough to be heard,” he said. “The NDP, we realize that the supply management is on the table for dairy and poultry, and we do not want (Prime Minister Stephen) Harper to sign it away,” said NDP candidate Betty Bannon. She said an NDP government would not put supply management on the TPP negotiating table in any future talks. Green Party candidate Cam Mather said that his party doesn’t support the TPP in general. “The Green Party does not support Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements and the TPP, which elevate corporate interest over the public interest by allowing corporations to sue governments over laws that reduce their profits such as environmental, labour and consumer regulations.” “Our rural MPs — and it doesn’t matter what party they’re in — they see (the importance of the dairy sector),” said Sid Atkinson, Dairy Farmers of Ontario regional board member. “They’re plugged into their communities. They know what’s going on. They know where the dollars are flowing into that community. They know what is sustaining those little small town businesses, and they’re committed to making sure those little communities survive.”

TPP getting lost in shuffle The Trans-Pacific Partnership: ever heard of it? There’s a good chance you haven’t, since this large, 12-country trade deal hasn’t been the stuff of front pages, nor has it led the nightly newscast very often. And, even at the best of times, international trade deals have an uncanny tendency to make eyes glaze over. Another reason is because the deal — which involves Canada, the United States and a number of other Pacific Rim countries — is being hammered out behind closed doors. The secrecy of the deal has been basis of much criticism, both in Canada and in the other nations currently involved in the talks. But despite the murky nature of the TPP and the talks surrounding it, not everyone is standing idly by waiting to see what will happen next. One such group has been the Canadian dairy industry, and grassroots organizations such as the L&A Milk Committee, who are deeply concerned that, in order to get a deal done, Canada might compromise the dairy industry’s supply management system. The poultry industry has expressed similar concerns about the pending trade deal. The dairy industry made its views known loud and clear at a ‘media day’ held on Tuesday at Ripplebrook Farm, a dairy operation owned by the MacLean family just east of Napanee. While they’re not naïve enough to think a TPP deal won’t involve some concessions from the dairy sector, they’re hoping any concessions will be balanced by ‘gains’ in other areas. Local dairy farms certainly have a sympathetic ear in Conservative MP and candidate Daryl Kramp, a guest at Ripplebrook on Tuesday, who passionately expressed his own support for the protection of supply management. When contacted by the Beaver, NDP candidate Betty Bannon, Liberal candidate Mike Bossio said they and their parties oppose the dismantling of supply management in the dairy sector as well. But while Kramp says he’s confident that supply management will be protected — just as it has in previous international trade deals involving Canada — and that he’s convinced those negotiating the trade deal know just how important supply management is to dairy farmers and their communities, even he admits he doesn’t know exactly where the ongoing TPP negotiations will lead. It’s important to remember, too, that the dairy industry is just one Canadian sector that could be impacted (for better or worse) by the TPP. And, it’s just one sector among a multitude of interests being represented across the Pacific Rim in these negotiations, from pharmaceuticals to intellectual property. The impact of the deal could be sweeping. The TPP wasn’t getting much attention before the federal election campaign started and — with all due respect to ‘Duffygate’ — it isn’t getting much now, either. However, the local dairy committee should be applauded for doing what it can to put the issue on the public radar. The public, meanwhile, should do what it can to get educated — as much as that’s possible — on the TPP, and make their voices heard.

Inspiration for exteriors It’s hard to believe that summer is soon coming to an end. I have been enjoying the summer spending time with my three kids, and perhaps procrastinating painting the rest of the exterior of my home. I really enjoy painting, but it always seems to be when I’m all the way on top of the ladder I hear, ‘Mom, so-and-so is doing this!’ or the other hundred sentences that begin with ‘Mom!’ They never seem to happen when I’m on solid ground. So the enjoyable, tranquil project of painting turns into a more frustrating, take-twice-as-long process; instead of beginning it, I don’t even bother to try when the kids are home. With only a few more weeks of ideal painting weather, I suppose I better get out there and finish the job. Need inspiration to make over your home? Here are some expert tips to select a colour combination that suits the style of your home. When renovating your home, it’s always important to give your exterior as much love as your interior. The outside of your home makes a huge statement about the potential value of your home and sets the tone for how people feel when they see your house for the first time. There are some considerations you need to take into

dition look. Most exterior colour schemes are comprised of sedate neutral hues; however, no matter the style of your home, there is always an opportunity to make an impact and inject some personality. If your home has no distinct architectural feature, use colour to add some personality. A bold colour on your front door creates an inviting entrance and is an easy way to change the look of your home with on trend colours. A deep purple or a bright red on your door creates a focal point and will give your home a strong street presence. Although, if your home is a historic home, my opinion is to stick with heritage colours of the period. These colours can still give your home the wow factor you’re looking for while keeping the integrity of your historic home. Once you’ve decided on a colour scheme that suits your home’s exterior, it’s important to choose an exterior paint that will look good and withstand the test of time. The issue of ‘likeability’ If there is one thing I know to be true as a librarian, it is that every reader is different. Just like our unique personalities determine to a large extent how we see the world, we experience books in very different ways. As per research in readers’ advisory, readers are generally broken down into four broad categories: characterdriven, setting-driven, prosedriven and story-driven. It is not always as simple as matching a character-driven reader with a character-driven book, however. For example, one of the discussions that I find myself in from time to time is whether or not a novel’s protagonist had to be ‘likeable’, or someone who at least inspires empathy, in order for the book to be enjoyed by a character-driven reader. Of course, the conclusion here is that it depends entirely on the person! One publication that has inspired such a debate in
recent years is The Woman Upstairs by Claire Messud, which follows a single, middle-aged, childless school teacher who is disillusioned and just plain angry. The narrator is dry humoured, embittered by life and brutally honest about it. In one interview with Publishers Weekly, author Messud took Coles issue with the following question: “I wouldn’t want to be friends with Nora (the narrator), would you? Her outlook is almost unbearably grim.” Messud’s response to the reporter was that “likeability” is entirely beside the point. A chapter in Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay, another book I loved, also focuses on the issue of likeability, even citing The Woman Upstairs. Gay suggests that the issue isn’t people taking umbrage with a lack of character likeability generally; it is that
people are particularly uncomfortable when female characters are unlikeable. We’ll celebrate an unlikeable, unconventional character like Holden Caulfield, but suspiciously pick apart a character like Nora. Gay’s argument: “Perhaps saying ‘the truth hurts’ is what lies at the heart of Notes worrying about likeability or the lack thereof – how much of the truth are we willing to subject ourselves to, how much are we willing to hurt, when we immerse ourselves in the safety of a fictional world?” Again, I think this depends on the reader. One thing that really irks me is when someone describes a book as outright ‘bad’ because they do not like the characters. You may not like the book, but don’t condemn it. Perhaps it wasn’t meant for you, maybe you are not supposed to

want to be friends with its characters. I’ll conclude with Messud’s reaction to question of character likeability, which I found to be true (and amusing): “Don’t go around asking the question, ‘Is this character likeable?’ and expect that to be compatible with serious literary endeavours. That’s not what it’s about. If you want self-help that’s going to make you feel good, or you want the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, fantastic, that’s a great thing to read, I have no complaints about that. But it’s not compatible with serious endeavours. The relevant question isn’t ‘Is this a potential friend for me?’ but ‘Is this character alive?’” You can reserve The Woman Upstairs and Bad Feminist online at www.countylibrary.ca or at your branch of the County of L&A Libraries. n Napanee town council passed a by-law that would prohibit blasting at the Napanee quarry… eventually. The by-law called on all blasting at the quarry to cease in 60 days. Local contractor H.J. MacFarland had been blasting at the quarry through the summer. Representatives of the company indicated that they would no longer need to blast at the quarry in about four weeks time. The by-law was the second regulatory attempt made by council in the hopes for bringing the blasting to an end. Council had passed a similar by-law in July, but blasting had nevertheless continued at the quarry. n A young Newburgh man was killed when the car he was travelling in lost control and struck a tree on County Road 4 a few miles south of Tamworth. The man, 22, had been participating in a ball game at the Centreville Fair earlier that evening. Three others who were travelling in the same car suffered serious but non-lifethreatening injuries. The deceased had recently graduated from teachers college in Ottawa, and had been hired on to be a teacher at an Ottawa school in a week’s time.

n A Napanee family was left homeless after fire destroyed their mobile home at the Fairfield Trailer Park. The homeowner and her two sons were away at the time the fire began. The fire apparently started in the living room and destroyed half of the structure. The rest of the trailer was damaged by smoke and water. Some 12 firefighters from Richmond Township fought the blaze for about an hour before it was fully extinguished. The cause of the fire was still under investigation. n Two local runners shared the honour of carrying the Ontario Summer Games flame into Napanee. Leslie Buchanan and Allan Sinclair led a group of Peterborough runners from the town limits along Highway 2, up John Street to the Napanee Town Hall. The torch had been carried from Kingston, the site of last year’s provincial games, to Peterborough, which was the new host of the games. It represented the first time the flame was transported by hand from city to city.

Geocachers from far and wide come to L&A New attendance record set for fifth annual ‘Mega’ geocaching event this weekend BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
Geocachers from five European nations, eight U.S. States, seven Canadian provinces and even one territory were among those who visited Lennox and Addington County this weekend to check out the region’s fifth annual ‘Mega’ event. All told, more than 900 people attended the event, which sees participants find hidden caches across the county using their GPS devices, easily surpassing the 700 of last year and setting a new local record. “We’re very happy with how the event worked out,” said L&A County Community Development Officer Rob Plumley. “The weather was perfect and cachers seemed to be very pleased with the quality of caching here in L&A County. The returning cachers enjoy the fact that new geocachers are introduced for every event. It keeps people coming back. Geocachers to the area have more than 1,500 caches to choose from.” In an effort to track the economic impact of the event the county organized a prize draw for participants who submitted receipts showing purchases they made while visiting the county. “Geocachers were in literally in every corner of L&A, from Amherst Island to Cloyne and beyond,” said Plumley. “Whether they were getting gas, having lunch, or staying in a hotel or B&B, many L&A businesses had geocaching customers through their doors this weekend.” One such guest was Doris Wong of Burnaby, B.C. who arrived early to get a head start on geocaching the area. “I’m an avid geocacher and I was in the Toronto area for the Parapan games where I was volunteering,” said Wong. “I have parents in the Toronto area and geocaching takes you places. Some of the caches I found here are great. It’s just so beautiful, whether it’s on the water or inland.” Having grown up in Ottawa she took particular interest in the caches that traced the history of Sir John A. Macdonald in the L&A region. “When we got here there
were so many caches to find, so we decided to work on that so that’s why we came here early,” Wong added. Surprisingly enough a family from B.C. wasn’t even the furthest travellers to the event; that honour went to a family from Poland, more than 6,500 kilometres away. According to Joe Tisdale, president of the L&A County Geocachers and Mega event co-organizer, having the word ‘mega’ attached to the event makes it a worldwide draw. The title is given to events that draw over 500 geocachers to it. “There are only three mega events in Canada, so if someone wants to attend a mega event and collect that icon (a prize given to those who participate in the event), you have to come to our event,” said Tisdale. “The next closest is on the east coach and then there’s one in western Canada. We’re pretty exclusive where we are.” By achieving mega sta-
tus, the event garners plenty of free publicity in the form of a newsletter that is e-mailed world wide by the sport’s creating company Groundspeak. That’s how they were able to reach geocachers both locally and internationally. “We talked to people from Norway after the event and told them it was nice of them to include the mega event on their trip,” said Tisdale. “She said ‘oh no, we actually came down for the mega event and we’re building out vacation around that.’ They specifically came to the mega event and they were going to tour the rest of Ontario afterwards. That was pretty neat.” With the success of this year’s event, the county has already booked Aug. 19-20 2016 for their sixth annual event. They’ve already began discussing plans for that event and developing next year’s theme. They’ll be hoping to break the 1,000 mark for visitors.

Local woman heads up effort to mark regal record BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
In just 13 days, Queen Elizabeth II will be celebrated as the longest-reigning British monarch. Church bells will ring across Canada at 12:15 p.m. marking the moment when Queen Elizabeth II, at 89years-old, will outdo the reign of her great-greatgrandmother, Queen Victoria. The moment comes at 5:30 p.m. British time. Local royal family enthusiast and member of the Canadian Royal Heritage Trust, Jane Ann McCawThompson, encourages people to fly a flag to celebrate the moment in history. “(It’s) to celebrate 63 years on the throne as our longest reigning Queen, who
has served with dignity and loves Canada. On her 24 visits to Canada, she came from the United States one time said, ‘I came back home.’ So Canada is very near and dear to her heart. She’s been an honourable Queen; at a very young age she gave her life to us for as long as she should live and she will,” said McCaw-Thompson. She is working with the Canadian Royal Heritage Trust to spread the word and to garner support for bells to be rung for the Queen across Canada on Sept. 9. “She’s in good health. To celebrate this occasion on the 9th, put a flag out in your yard,” McCaw-Thompson encourages, both to honour the Queen and also to celebrate Canada. “She loves her tie as the head of the
Commonwealth for us,” McCaw-Thompson added. Though a local event hasn’t officially been planned, McCaw-Thompson asks that anyone planning to celebrate the day to contact the Canadian Royal Heritage Trust so it can be documented for the Queen. “What an honour for her to know there are bells for the Queen,” said McCawThompson. “We’ll never see (another) Queen reign that long in our lifetime.” Queen Elizabeth II, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, was born April 21, 1926 and has reigned since Feb. 6, 1952. Her coronation was June 2, 1953, following the death of her father, Prince Albert, Duke of York, who later became King George VI. Her son Charles, 66, Prince of Wales, holds the
record as Britain’s longestserving heir apparent — meaning he has waited the longest to succeed to the throne. Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, follows his father next in line for the throne, followed by his son Prince George. Queen Elizabeth II is married to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. It is said she fell in love with Philip in July 1939, when she was 13years-old. The pair exchanged letters until their engagement was announced on July 9, 1947. They were married Nov. 20, 1947 at Westminster Abbey and gave birth to Prince Charles on Nov. 14, 1948. Princess Anne was born in 1950. Queen Elizabeth II will be celebrating her achievement quietly at Balmoral on Sept. 9.

ports may be the first thing that comes to mind when many parents think of extracurricular activities for their children, but not all kids are cut out for or interested in competitive athletics. But just because a youngster may not be the next star quarterback or captain of the soccer team does not mean he or she can’t find an extracurricular activity to be passionate about. Parents know that schoolwork comes first, but extracurricular activities can be important to a child’s development, serving as an avenue to meet new people and an opportunity to learn the importance of teamwork. The following are a handful of things parents should consider when trying to help their children find the right extracurricular activities.

INTERESTS One of the easiest ways to help kids find an extracurricular activity they can be passionate about is to discuss their interests with them. Youngsters with a love of animals might enjoy volunteering at a local animal shelter or hospital, while those who love to write may find writing for the school newspaper is a great way to apply that passion in a practical setting. Even kids with a passion for video games might be interested in learning about computer graphics and what it takes to design games. When trying to find extracurricular activities for your children, resist the urge to write off any of their interests. Instead, use those interests as jumping off points to further engage their passions. AVAILABILITY Parents know that school comes before extracurricular activities, but kids may not be so wise. Keep in mind kids’ existing workloads when helping them find the right afterschool activities. Many organizations are especially flexible with teenage volunteers or employees, but parents still must keep a watchful eye to ensure kids do not overextend themselves. Kids who overcommit to extracurricular activities may end up feeling burnt out, which can have a negative impact on their schoolwork. Encourage kids to find activities they care about, but emphasize that these activities should not become bigger priorities than schoolwork. Let kids know that they can get more involved during summer vacation, but make sure kids don’t devote too much of their time to afterschool activities during the school year. A couple of hours per week and even some additional time on the weekends should not distract kids from their responsibilities at school, and that’s still ample time for kids to explore their interests.
INTERNSHIPS Internships were once exclusive to college students, but many organizations now offer internship opportunities to high schoolers as well. Kids who find themselves interested in particular subjects at school, whether it’s graphic design or a beginner’s course on finance, may be eligible for internships with local companies. Such opportunities may even encourage kids to pursue a particular course of study once they enter college. Extracurricular activities can help youngsters develop into well-rounded adults. Parents can help kids find the right activities while still encouraging them to keep schoolwork atop their priority lists.

MAKE SCHOOL DAY MORNINGS EASIER
Parents can take several steps to make sure school day mornings go more smoothly.
S
N A P A N E E
chool day mornings can be hectic, as getting kids ready for school and out the door on time is not always easy. Working parents may find school day mornings especially difficult, as their own work schedules can make mornings feel even more rushed. Fortunately, parents can employ several strategies to free up time in the morning so everyone starts their days off in a more relaxing atmosphere. • Wake up earlier. Sleep might seem like a precious commodity, but waking up just 10 to 15 minutes earlier can remove some of the stress from weekday mornings without costing you a lot of sack time. Let kids sleep in until their normal wakeup time, using your extra 10 or 15 minutes to shower or enjoy your morning cup of coffee before the house is abuzz with activity. • Tackle certain chores the night before. Delaying certain chores until you wake up makes for a hectic morning, so tackle as many morning chores as possible before you go to bed for the
night. Prepare school lunches, lay clothes out for yourself and your children, and make sure kids have their backpacks packed and ready to go before they go to bed. Each of these things may only take a few minutes, but when left for the morning, they can add up to a substantial amount of time. • Encourage youngsters to pick up the pace. Some people are morning people, while others dread setting their alarms for early morning hours. Kids who fall into the latter group may drag their feet in the morning, but parents should offer encouragement when kids are moving slowly in the morning. Allowing your frustration to show may only make kids less fond of mornings, so remind them as nicely as possible that everyone has a schedule to stick to if they seem to be dragging their feet.
• Keep the television off. If watching the television is ingrained in your morning routine, try going a few days without it to see if this makes it easier to get out the door on time. Kids might grow distracted by morning cartoons, and even adults may get caught up in morning news shows or other forecasts. Eliminating television from your morning routine can save time and also may help your family grow closer, as you will have more distraction-free time to speak to one another. In addition to turning off the television, resist the urge to turn on your devices or scan work emails when getting ready in the morning. Parents know that school day mornings can be hectic. But there are several ways to make such mornings go more smoothly so everyone gets where they need to be on time.

Field set for Great Waterway Classic Mackenzie Tour’s top golfers to play at Loyalist Golf and County Club this weekend
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
A diverse field of 156 golfers will tee off at Bath's Loyalist Golf and Country Club this morning, signalling the start of this weekend's Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada’s Great Waterway Classic tournament. Among those in attendance will be the top five golfers on the tour’s order of merit- J.J. Spaun ($76,409), Sam Ryder ($55,173), Drew Weaver ($44,988), Kevin Spooner ($40,639) and Albin Choi ($40,079). The top three leaders hail from the U.S. while Spooner and Choi are Canadians. Also in the field is last year's Great Waterway Classic champion David Bradshaw. “We’ve got the top players on the order of merit competing this week, which is always nice when you have the cream of the crop from the tour’s point of view,” said tournament director Brad Parkins. “Then we’ve got some great young talent that qualified through the Monday qualifi-
er out at Trillium.” When it comes to handicapping the field, Parkins says it’s impossible to pick a clear cut favourite. “The tournament is really up for the taking,” said Parkins. “There’s so many quality players in the field this week. I can’t really single out one or two guys because the guys are playing really well. There’s so many guys that are so good out here. It would be nice to see a Canadian win, which would be the cherry on top, but at the end of the day they’re all great players. Whoever hoists the trophy at the end of the week will certainly be deserving.” Adding to the stakes is the fact that this tournament is the ninth stop of the 12 event tour. At the end of the season the top five players who grossed the most money will earn status on the Web.com Tour. This year’s field features a mix of players who competed in the event last year as well as those new to the Bath course. Parkins says one of the perks of seeing

I think three of us ended up getting forward and unfortunately the other two lost their first matches. I took note of it because they were highly ranked golfers... to be the last Canadian still playing at the U.S. Am was definitely a big bonus.” The U.S. Am wrapped up a busy summer for James, who is now set to return stateside for his junior year at Charleston Southern University in SC.

We can improve on different areas that we want to improve upon for the players and spectatorship.” Unfortunately for fans and tournament organizers alike the schedules didn’t line up for Bath’s Austin James or Napanee’s Josh Whalen to participate in
this year’s tournament as both had to return to their collegiate careers. Kingston's Matt McQuillan will however be taking part and could draw a sizeable amount of hometown support. The first round of competition is scheduled to get underway at 7 a.m. this morning with the afternoon wave teeing off at noon. Those same start times apply to tomorrow’s action with Saturday and Sunday’s getting underway at 8 a.m. The trophy will be presented approximately 20 minutes after the completion of play on the 18th hole. in 1972, the Islanders have iced several competitive teams over the years. As recently as 2013-14 they were first in their division with a 28-14-1 record. Despite their moniker their colour scheme and logo actually more closely resembles the NHL’s Calgary Flames than the New York Islanders. “It’s going to be a better league with Gananoque coming in which will be good for the fans and for us,” said Hartwick. “There’s a lot more parity in the league this year.” The Islanders’ presence should make for a more exciting playoff race as only four of the league’s six teams qualify for the playoffs. Though the Storm were all but eliminated by the Christmas break, the Amherstview Jets and Picton Pirates battled right down to the final game of the season for the fourth spot. The Pirates wound up edging the Jets by just one point. Even still just three points separated the fifth place Jets from the second place Raiders.
Napanee will quickly become acquainted with the Islanders, starting with a pre-season match up this evening in Gananoque, beginning at 8:15 p.m. On Tuesday they welcome the Islanders to the SPC for a 7:30 p.m. pre-season game. Tickets for that game will be available at the door. Napanee will wrap up their exhibition season by taking part in the Campbellford Rebels’ Fall Warm Up Tournament, Sept. 11-13 at Trenton's Royal Canadian Air Forces Arena. The tournament will feature Junior C clubs from across the province, not just limited to the Empire B League. Games will start to count in the standings on Sept. 20 when the Raiders open the season on the road against the Islanders at the Gananoque Recreation Centre. Napanee will play their first regular season home game Sept. 22 when they host the Panthers for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. They’ll be home just about every Tuesday throughout the season.
JAMES | Returns for junior year with Buccaneers CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15 “My goal at the start of the summer was just to
qualify for the U.S. Am,” said James. “I played poorly the week before the U.S. Am so when I got there I just wanted to play solid golf and see what happened. The goal was to get to match play and after that I just
took it match by match.” Unfortunately for James his schedule didn’t allow for him to play in this week’s Great Waterway Classic, which is being held on his home Loyalist Golf and County Club course.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK AUSTIN JAMES
Austin James is a golfer from Bath. This past weekend he reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur, marking the highest finish of any Canadian in the field. He will now turn his attention on his junior year with the CSU Buccaneers, where he is playing on a scholarship. If you know someone who should be our Athlete of the Week, call the Beaver’s newsroom at 354-6641. Or send us a picture and a brief write-up to 72 Dundas St. E., Napanee, K7R 1H9.

“After last year and playing there and having so much fun I was really looking forward to it,” said James. “It’s unfortunate they moved it back a week (compared to this time last year) and I have school. That happens sometimes. Hopefully I can play in one of those events in the future.” He said his home course as well as friends and family across Canada were really supportive of him during his time at the U.S. Am. He’ll look to build on the momentum of his summer as he gets set for his second year with the CSU Buccaneers. Following a similar schedule to the one he saw in his freshmen year, he’ll be able to easily track his progress from last year to this season. “I just want to keep improving and playing better golf and see what happens,” he said. Meanwhile James’ older sister Augusta continues her strong play on the professional Symetra Tour. She currently sits sixth on the money leaders’ board with $46,235 earned through 15 events. If she can maintain her top 10 position by the end of the season she would earn a card for the LPGA Tour. Currently in the 11th spot is Rachel Rohanna with $39,481. Next up on the tour is the Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge, in South Dakota, which runs Sept. 3-6. Six events remain on the tour, which wraps up Oct. 18 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

MEMORIAMS
COLLINS - In loving memory of Donald Glynn, August 27, 2014. Veteran of RCAF WWII. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on the snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain, When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night, Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. Sadly missed by Estella, his wife of 76 years, children, Frank and Jeanne, Don and Elaine, Glenda, 4 grandsons, 10 great-grandchildren. GRAHAM - In loving memory of our mother and grandmother, Mary Veronica, who passed away August 30, 2014. God called your name so gently, That only you could hear, No one heard the footsteps Of the angel drawing near, Softly from the shadows, There came a gentle call, You closed your eyes And went to sleep, You quietly left us all. Until we meet again. Miss you every day. Shirley and Shannon. PURCELL - In loving memory of my dear husband, Gary, who passed away August 28, 2013. Every day in some small way, I miss you more than words can say, In my heart you will always stay, Loved and remembered every day. Sadly missed by wife Kathy. WOOD - In loving memory of Wayne, who passed away August 29, 2012. Three years have passed since God has taken you Home. I think of you in silence And often speak your name, But all I have are memories And your picture in a frame, Gone are the times we used to share, But in my heart you are always here, The gates of memories will never close, I miss you more than anyone knows, Life goes on, we know that’s true, But it’s not the same since I lost you, You will always be in my heart. Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by wife Gladys, daughters and sons and families.

Local DJ plans poverty fundraiser BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
An all-day fundraiser and family fun day is taking place this Sunday in Napanee to benefit the Morning Star Mission and the Salvation Army. James Maddox is organizing the event at the Napanee Pavilion, which will include live music, a silent auction, face painting and games for children. He also says the event will be attended by the fire department and the Napanee OPP. The event starts at noon and will run until about 10 p.m. He says he’s aiming to collect non-perishable food items
and monetary donations to be used to help local families and individuals in need. He said a number of dignitaries including Greater Napanee Mayor Gord Schermerhorn, Liberal candidate Mike Bossio, and MP Daryl Kramp are planning to attend the event. He also said Bossio is collecting food donations at his office in Napanee, which will be dropped off at the event Sunday. “It’s to help people out in the town through The Morning Star Mission and The Salvation Army. They all depend on donations for their food items and cash to get by through the year,” said Maddox. “It’s going to be a big suc-
cess, I know it is.” His initial goal was to raise $5,000; however, Maddox anticipates he will far exceed that goal. Everything raised at the event will be split equally and donated to the Morning Star Mission and The Salvation Army. “It’s going to be a wonderful day, there’s a lot of really great volunteers. We’ve got Special Olympics getting involved, which is great,” Maddox said. He said the number of volunteers involved has grown from five to 22; he also said members from Community Living will be volunteering their time the day of the event. Maddox said local businesses have stepped up to
donate auction items, food and their time as well. “It came together faster than I expected and it got a little bit bigger than I anticipated, so I’m very impressed,” said Maddox. He said he hopes to make the event an annual fundraiser and expand it to a two-day event. “In this town the poverty level is real bad. Rent is high; hydro is extremely high and getting higher everyday. People are struggling and people are being laid off,” said Maddox, stressing the need to support the Morning Star Mission and The Salvation Army. For more information or to make a donation, contact Maddox at 613-876-3849.

Getting into the swing of golf in L&A BY ROB PLUMLEY
Special to the Beaver I’m not a good golfer. Yes, I have a set of golf clubs. I own a pair of golf shoes. I have ample golf balls stored away in my big fancy golf bag. I may look the part. But make no mistake, I’m not a good golfer. Not by a long shot. That’s the great thing about golf. For the average duffer, once you accept the fact that you’re not going to make it look easy like Rory McIlroy (or L&A’s Josh Whalen or Augusta James), you can still have fun shanking shots from the rough to the bunker to the occasional fairway and green. I don’t get out on the links much anymore, but I have had an opportunity to golf each of Lennox and Addington’s four great courses in the last little while. They’re all in really great shape, offering challenging layouts, well-maintained greens and fairways, not to mention spectacular scenic views that L&A County is known for. My golfing ‘career’ began back in the early
countryside, challenging even the most discriminating golfer with its regulation course, the blue tees hitting the 6,668 yard mark. Another great L&A County course is the Napanee Golf and Country Club. Established in 1897, it’s the second oldest nine-hole course in Canada. NDCC boasts beautifully manicured, fully-irrigated fairways made challenging by mature trees, rolling hills and intriguing water hazards. The course has nine holes with different tees for the front and back nine. The forward tees play 5,388 yards and the regular tees 5,877 each for 18 holes. The challenges presented by the course are the undulating fairways and greens with subtle and not-so-subtle slopes. Amherstview Golf Club is a popular semi-private course that is celebrating its 45th year of operation in 2015. With five sets of tee blocks, Loyalist offers challenging play to golfers of all skill levels. Loyalist is one of the best-conditioned courses in eastern Ontario with bent grass greens, tees and fairways that are all constructed to USGA specifications. Colourful natural watercourse, strategic bunkering and native grasses contrasting the fine turf create a setting that is second to none. For the second consecutive year, Loyalist Country Club is hosting ‘The Great Waterway Classic’. The event brings the excitement of the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada to the area as 156 tour professionals will tee it up, vying for a piece of the $175,000 purse. It’s a great opportunity for the public to see golf's rising stars play close to home. The Classic begins this Thursday and the final round takes place on Sunday. You can learn more about the event by visiting www.TheGreatWaterwayClassic.ca. For more details about each course in L&A County, please visit our website at www.BestDayEver.ca.
