The 185th Napanee Fair, which was held this past weekend, had a little bit of everything. Above, 4-H member Julia Blackett has a final word with her sheep as she prepares to show it before the judges. The demolition derby (at right) was another huge hit among fair goers on the last day of the fair on Monday, with more than 30 drivers entering the smash-up competition.

FAIR | Increase in exhibitors this year CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “One of the big things I was really pushing this year was getting new exhibitors into the fair,” said McKinley. “Last year we had 300, this year we had 373. I was hoping for 50 (more) and got 73, so we were pretty excited about that.” “We weren’t sure with the water restrictions what that would mean for the flowers and vegetables,” added McKinley. “But they were still really good this year.”

A steady crowd filtered through the gates all weekend, all culminating with a packed grand stand for Monday’s demolition derby. Though exact numbers aren’t yet known, the fact that the 50/50 prize was nearly $1,000 was a good indication as to how many people turned out for the final event. McKinley pointed to a strong core of volunteers that helped keep things running smoothly all weekend long. And though the clean-up

for this year’s fair is just now being completed, fair board members have their eyes on next August. “We’ve already had discussions,” said McKinley for the 186th fair. “We’re going to flip a few things around and make some more time for some larger events, but we never really stop talking about the fair.” If this year’s numbers are a barometer, they won’t have to tinker with too much to keep the crowds happy and coming back for more next year.

L&A Community Bike Shop founder Tyla Vrantsidis and bike technician Dave Vinluan strive to provide free bikes for those without in the area.

‘Community Bike Shop’ finds new home

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

HE Lennox and Addington Community Bike Shop has found a new home for the summer, moving from NDSS to the building in Conservation Park. To help mark the occasion, the shop will be holding a grand opening on Aug. 10 from 2 to 7 p.m. A kids bike parade, bike decoration competition, safety session, face painting, beanie baby sale and barbecue will be among the highlights. The purpose of the grand opening is to help spread the word about what they’re all about and let people know where to find them while the high school is closed for the summer. “We collect used bicycles. We repair them and give them away to the community for free,” said Tyla Vrantsidis, founder of the Community Bike Shop. “We’re doing a call-out for more bicycles.” Along with restoring bikes to give to those without, the shop also offers free repairs for bike owners. They’re done by Dave Vinluan, who has graciously donated his time. They obtain old bikes either through donations or from the OPP, which recovers stolen bikes but can’t always track down their owners. When they go unclaimed, they’re donated to the program. Since it was founded three years ago, the shop has given out 114 bikes to those who might otherwise not been able to afford one. The use of the Conservation Park building was donated by the Town of Greater Napanee. It allows them to stay open through the summer months, after which they will move back into NDSS. They’ve part-

T

nered with shop class students in the past to help with their repairs. “It all started when I was sitting on Church Street drinking a coffee and the kids were playing,” said Vrantsidis. “There was one kid with his new bike pulling a broken bike with no seat with a skipping rope, being pulled behind. There were four more kids saying, ‘can I have a turn?’ I thought, ‘well isn’t this cute’, but then I said, ‘wait a minute, do you guys not have bikes?” From there the bike shop was born. For the most part it has functioned solely

on donations from the public, though this past June is was gifted a grant from the Napanee District Community Foundation. That money went towards purchasing tools and equipment for their repair shop. “Dave can build a bike without spending four hours tearing another one apart,” she said. Throughout the summer they will operate out of the Conservation Park on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. For more on their organization, visit their L&A Community Bike Shop Facebook page.

Picturing Our Community

Inquiry must produce results HE inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women, long awaited in many circles, is set to get off the ground — its terms of reference were released yesterday morning. While that news is welcome by many, it’s also being greeted by some skepticism — even from some within the indigenous community itself. One woman told the CBC that she expected the inquiry to be a “gong show.” Given the inertia that seems to be present with nearly all issues relating to Canada’s First Nations, such skepticism is certainly understandable. While the new Liberal government does seem to be genuinely eager to move the ball forward, expectations of them actually pulling it off aren’t particularly high. After all, studies, commissions and inquiries have all come and gone through the years, and most have led to little or nothing to show for the effort, other than perhaps a thick coating of dust on some government shelf in Ottawa. The inquiry into missing and murdered women, it is promised by the Justin Trudeau government, won’t be one of these reports. On that score, we hope that’s correct — if not, the (at least) $40 million and two years the federal government plans on spending on the inquiry will be for naught, other than serve as an expensive ‘feel good’ public relations exercise for the ruling Liberals. And, as we head into the inquiry, there seems to be expectations regarding how it should unfold. Some have argued that the inquiry should ‘name names’ and help to bring justice to the families who have lost sisters and daughters to what can safely be described as an epidemic. The government, however, appears to be more interested in getting to the underlying, systemic issues in particular that are causing this epidemic to take place and develop recommendations and policies to address those issues. The previous Conservative government under Stephen Harper had long resisted the calling of an inquiry, believing it to be an unnecessary duplication of actions already being taken at the federal level. Indeed, another go-nowhere inquiry will prove the former government right (although, it should be noted that interim Conservative party leader and Leader of the Official Opposition Rona Ambrose has stated that her party now supports holding the inquiry). Indeed, it’s hard not to support the inquiry, given the tragic nature of the problem at hand. When indigenous women are the victims of violence at levels disproportionate to the general Canadian population, it goes without saying that the problem deserves intense study. But it also deserves action — and results. Anything less would only serve to feed the sense of hopelessness already afflicting Canada’s First Nations communities.

The Napanee Lioness Club isn’t slowing down much this summer, making donations to a couple of community organizations last week. Above, members of the club presented a cheque for $3,000 to the L&A County General Hospital Foundation. Meanwhile (below), the club gave $1,000 to the Salvation Army Food bank. Following the motto ‘we serve’, the club distributed more than $10,000 to various organization this year, including donations to the Dental Coalition (dental care for seniors on fixed income), L&A Interval House and L&A Special Olympics. The club has also supported families who require equipment for physically-challenged children and fire victims. The 27-member club raised that money through a number of activities, including its annual garage sale, turkey and beef meat pies sales, and organizing canteens at auction sales.

Letter to the Editor

Inflated rural costs are real In response to the letter ‘Urban residents have added costs’ (Napanee Beaver, July 28), this letter is rife with elitism and entitlement of some urban people. That you Ms. Andrews, would expect the rural folk to pay for your privileges, while we struggle to pay our own inflated rural costs is thoughtless at the minimum. You fail to recognize the advantage of sidewalks, street lights, curbs, close proximity to vital services and, yes, running potable

water. I would gratefully pay for clean, dependable water, and not having to pay for septic emptying — especially in the recent drought conditions! The water trucks (which are not free for your information) run past my house more than any other vehicle. Can your daughter take a shower or flush the toilet without concern? Try living at my house! While you enjoy all these privileges, are our council working with providers for updated phone lines? Natural gas? Cable?

No! We pay through the nose. I will not pay for you to have free Wifi, fire hydrants, faster emergency services, safer passage on foot, hydro to light your streets, etc. And by expecting two-thirds of the population to pay for the one-third, then you are in essence, expecting us to supplement your daughters’ education, with urban welfare, which you are not entitled to. ‘Systems’ approach to farming By Eric Kaiser OLLOWING a ‘systems’ approach ensures consideration of the many practices that will allow farming to be both sustainable and successful. Components of a systems approach include crop rotation, use of cover crops, compaction avoidance, fertility including use of recyclables like manure, tillage reduction or elimination (no-till), weed control, the availability of appropriate equipment to complete tasks in a timely manner, consideration of soil types, (ie clay, silt and sand contents), slopes including length of slopes, drainage features including water courses and water bodies and tile drainage. This is not necessarily a total list. There may be others. I have discussed many of the components in previous articles and will do more here. Crop rotation is a central component of growing food sustainably. Keeping soil covered with crops is essential to reduce erosion particularly when forages are not required for livestock. Growing both grasses (corn and other grains) and broadleaves (soyabeans, sunflowers, canola, peas, etc.) is important. This allows for different herbicides to be used for weed control. Also, different plant types with different roots both place different

F

demands on the soil and provide different contributions to organic matter. In addition crop rotation provides some departure from monoculture. Cover crops and no-till and their benefits have been discussed in other articles. Compaction reduction involves a number of other components. One important component is timeliness, the avoidance of traffic when soils are wet. Early spring is a time when soils are wetter. Early spring is a time when a lot of compaction is done. Not doing tillage means less traffic when soils are wetter and more likely to be compacted. It also means less traffic in fall when soils are often wet. The spreading of manure in livestock based operations means heavy loads have to be carried across soils. Spreading manure when soils are drier, such as in summer, will reduce compaction. Gaining maximum benefits from nutrients in manure, such as spreading in spring before planting, will require compromises with compaction. Use of cover crops after off-season application will allow nutrients, primarily nitrogen, to be tied up in the organic matter to be released for use by later crops. The use of tile drainage, the placement of perforated plastic or, in the past, clay tile in the soil to carry away excess water, will provide

significant increases to productivity. It will eliminate wet area. Productivity will increase dramatically in those areas. Another benefit includes not getting equipment stuck. Tile drainage will also allow earlier planting which will usually increase yields. It will also allow other operations such as spraying and harvest to proceed with less disruptions and difficulty. Tile will only remove excess water, water beyond the amount that will be useful for crop growth. It will avoid saturated soils allowing for air in the soil profile which is essential for crop growth. Equipment is a major expense. It is also the main factor in giving the one per cent of the population the ability to feed the other 99 per cent. There is always a balancing act between having the equipment to complete cropping tasks in a timely fashion and having an uneconomical amount. The practice of no-till farming means less equipment is required. It also means more acres can be covered with the same equipment. Both will lower costs. Factors such as soil type and terrain features such as hills and slopes are factors that can’t be changed in a major way but must be considered and compensated for. A number things can be done. Planting across slopes instead of up and down can greatly reduce erosion. Keeping soil covered with crops, crop

residues and cover crops will help as well. Sandy soils can be compacted if treated improperly. However clay soils are much easier to compact. Loam soils susceptibility to compaction is also to be considered. Consideration of soil types will greatly influence farming practices. Each farmer must consider many factors in arriving at the farming practices he/she uses. The farmer’s sense of social responsibility to keep topsoil for future generations will also influence the farming practices used. Most Ontario farmers have completed an Environmental Farm Plan. This is a farmer-initiated, farmerrun way to help farmers learn the best system for the land they farm. Each component is important and all are interrelated with some dependent on others to allow them to be used. Farmers challenge is to create their own interdependent system that will make their farm sustainable in the long term. This article is the last of a four-part series written by longtime local farmer Eric Kaiser. Eric, with his son Max, farms 1,300 acres southwest of Napanee on Hay Bay. They are egg and pullet producers who grow the grain to feed the livestock. They make the feed for the livestock with their own on farm feed mill. They recycle the manure from the poultry to fertilize the crops.

Letter to the Editor

Time to put a price on carbon I received my latest mailing from my MP Mike Bossio, printed in the colour of the only party that offers a realistic solution to climate change (Green). I noticed that the new Liberal government seems concerned about children (Canada Child Benefit) and climate change. To address climate change, our local MP held a meeting. The Liberals signed the Kyoto Accord and then did nothing, and watched as our emissions rose each year. They did form ‘The National Round Table on the Environment’, a professional full-time meeting as it were. As someone active in the climate change movement since the

mid-1980s, I can assure Mr. Bossio and the Liberal government that the time for meetings has long since passed. The verdict is in. We just need to put a price on carbon and let individuals and the marketplace respond accordingly. It’s really simple. But that would require real leadership and that unfortunately is something Justin Trudeau seems to be lacking. He just wants to be popular. And get re-elected. And take selfies with his fans. It’s all fine and dandy to hand out snowsuits to new immigrants, and to increase child benefits, but if the Liberals really care about kids, in our

country and throughout the world, they’d get on with what scientists say has to be done. Carbon must be priced. It must be done quickly. And it must increase each year to allow Canadians and the marketplace to adjust accordingly. The people of Fort McMurray and Calgary get climate change, farmers struggling through an epic drought get that the weather is becoming unpredictable, but the best the Liberals can muster is more meetings. Mr. Trudeau, show some leadership. Put a price on carbon! Cam Mather, Tamworth

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago August 3, 1966 ■ A report of resulting from an Ontario Police Commission probe of the Napanee police service was being kept under wraps — and it appeared as if some or all of the report would be kept from the public. The town’s deputy-reeve, W.R. Douglas, said that he had received the report, and was preparing to discuss the report with the market and police committee. However, he said he wasn’t sure at that point whether the report would be made public, or be only partially released to the public. He also declined to discuss the contents of the report with The Napanee Beaver. “I don’t want to be quoted on this at all, and I’m definitely not releasing anything new,” he said. ■ A young Napanee-area girl was killed when she was struck by a car on Highway 2 three miles east of Napanee. The girl, 9, was waiting to cross the road, watching as a large truck passed by. She started across the road after the truck had passed, but stepped into the path of an oncoming car that was travelling in the opposite direction. Police said that there would be no charges laid in connection with the accident.

30 Years Ago August 6, 1986 ■ A representative of the Fair Rental Policy Organization of Ontario said that provincial rent policies were causing a housing crisis. John Armitage, speaking to the Napanee Rotary Club, said that rent controls established more than a decade earlier were causing problems in the province, in particular creating a shortage in affordable rental housing. He also said that there was a 70 per cent decline in private participation in new rental construction. FRPO suggested that rent controls should be phased out. ■ Boats visiting Napanee would be prohibited from mooring on the south side of the Napanee River — at least temporarily. Napanee Region Conservation Authority acting general manager Ed Adams reported that work needed to be done on the river shoreline to halt ongoing erosion and soil destabilization. He said that new steel piles would be driven in on both sides of the gabion wall along the shoreline west of Centre Street. A new wooden boardwalk would replace the existing asphalt walkway.

Staff Picks: Redemption Road Andree Duval, Relief Librarian for the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries, recently enjoyed Redemption Road, a new thriller by John Hart. “With all of the outdoor summer activities I wasn’t sure that I should take out an express loan book,” Andree mentions. “However, the ‘Lucky Day Coles’ Reads’ cover and book blurb for Redemption Road was so intriguing that I just had to borrow it. I didn’t need to be concerned because I finished the one week loan book in two days. Needless to say, I could barely put it down. “Redemption Road hits all the right notes and plays out beautifully,” says Andree. She explains that “there is a troubled cop named Elizabeth Black who is still trying to come to terms with her long ago rape and its aftermath. Currently, the 13-year veteran cop is under investigation for shooting and killing two kidnappers who were sexually abusing teenager Channing Shore. Police investigators want to know why Elizabeth and Channing’s official statements about the rescue do not seem accurate. The media is also ques-

tioning the shooting as Elisabeth, a white cop, shot the two black perpetrators 18 times. Elizabeth and Channing’s shared experience creates a bond that deepens as the novel progresses which may prove dangerous for both parties. Elizabeth is conflicted about the imminent release of Notes Adrian Wall an ex-cop and convicted murderer who she believes is innocent. During Wall’s incarceration she has watched over Gideon Strange, the 14-year-old son of his murder victim. Elizabeth loves the boy who is shot as he attempts to avenge his mother’s murder by killing Wall. Elizabeth is called out to the abandoned church where her estranged father preached because murder victims are being ritually posed on the altar. Elizabeth was raped when she was a teenager near the church. Returning to the church to investigate the murders adds further tension and confusion to Elizabeth’s life. The rest of the police department assumes that the just released Wall is the killer — why is she the only one who does not? Wall is a changed man from

the one Elizabeth admired when she first joined the police force. In prison, he was tortured by the corrupt warden and guards who were trying to get him to reveal the location of his deceased cell mate’s hidden loot. Wall is being torn apart by his need for revenge and his desire to be left alone to try to find some peace. When Elizabeth is about to be arrested and realizes that Wall will also be charged, she goes on the run with him. Is he a serial killer? Or is innocent of the charges and if so how do

they prove it?” Find out by reserving Redemption Road in regular print or large print at the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries. Falun Gong protest comes to town Group takes aim at organ harvesting of followers in China

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

A group of practitioners of the ancient art of Falun Gong stopped by Greater Napanee town hall on Friday, hoping to raise awareness of the chilling human rights abuses they say their members have been subjected to in China. Their appearance in Napanee was part of a Canada-wide tour they’ve embarked on, hoping to educate Canadians of injustices such as murder, organ harvesting and false imprisonment they say that followers of Falun Gong face in China. A discipline of the Buddha School tradition, Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa), is a peaceful teaching that consists of meditation and gentle exercises. At Friday’s rally, the members

handed out pamphlets outlying their beliefs, which they say is built around truthfulness, compassion and tolerance. “In 2000, when (former General Secretary of the Communist Party of China) Jiang Zemin saw the opportunity to make profits by harvesting organs for transplant, he started doing that, said Jeffrey Sun, one of the group’s spokespeople. “To this day about 1.5 million have been harvested. Most of these harvests probably would have resulted in death. Their numbers are supported by a 680-page report that was released earlier this year by former Canadian cabinet minister David Kilgour. Working with international human rights lawyer David Matas and China analyst and investigative reporter Ethan

Gutmann, they published a report titled An Update to Bloody Harvest and The Slaughter. They reported that 60,000 to 100,000 organ harvests are done each year with the Communist Party, state institutions and the health system all being complicit. “We sent packages to mayors hoping their would help us by signing a resolution and we also sent petitions to local MPs in that hope that they would pass a resolution in the house, said Sun, noting that increased international pressure may lead to changes in China. At each stop they bring a petition with them and seek the signatures of Canadian citizens. They also displayed a banner calling for the arrest of Zemin. Approximately one in 12 citizens in China follow

Falun Gong, living under fear of persecution from the communist government. Outside of China it is practiced freely in over 60 countries around the world. “My husband has been arrested and was sent to prison for 15 months in 2011, said Rita Tang, who is on the tour with her husband to help spread their message. “And my motherin-law is still in prison now for 13 years. “They are just trying to tell the truth, added Tang of Falun Gong followers. “Lots of young children, their families are destroyed (by the Chinese government). Their cross Canada tour will continue throughout the summer, heading west to British Columbia. For more on their cause, visit www.StopOrganHarvesting.org.

Quinte Conservation adjusts dams to keep rivers flowing Beaver Staff

Quinte Conservation announced last week that it would be operating dams on both the Napanee River and Salmon Rivers in order to increase flows downstream. The moves are being made to compensate for the unusually dry weather and lack of moisture affecting the region this summer. “We are attempting to maintain a minimal flow in

the rivers to support local ecosystems, said Quinte Conservation General Manager Terry Murphy. “Residents above the dams we are operating will notice a decline in their water levels. Among the dams being operated include the Second Depot Lake dam near Verona, which affects the flow of the Napanee River, and the Upper Arden dam near Arden and the Laraby Rapids dam near Tamworth,

both of which affect the flow of the Salmon River. The operation of the dams is only the latest measure being taken by Quinte Conservation in light of the lack of rain across the region dating back to the late spring. Earlier last month, the conservation authority declared a Level 2 low water condition, which indicates a potentially serious water supply problem. According to

Quinte Conservation, a Level 2 low water condition often means minor water supply issues, and that there is the potential for major supply problems in the near future. Long-term weather forecasts suggest the dry conditions could continue into the fall. Quinte Conservation and the Low Water Response team will meet this week to re-assess the situation.

Regional FireFit tournament coming to Napanee BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Napanee’s Strathcona Paper Centre has been home to many challenging athletic competitions over the years, but they will pale in comparison to what will take place Aug. 20-21. That’s when the arena will be home to the 2016 Eastern Ontario Regional FireFit Competition and will see firefighters take part in an arduous obstacle course. It’ll all be hosted by Greater Napanee Emergency Services. The event is expected to draw competitors from across Ontario as well as Quebec — and even as far as Winnipeg. Decked out in full firefighters gear, they’ll run through a series of exhausting obstacles in a race against the clock. Those include climbing stairs, moving a metal block using a hammer, dragging a hose

and dragging a 175-pound dummy across the finish line. Both male and female competitors take part, all running the same course. Those in attendance will get an inside look at what firefighters have to be prepared to face whenever they answer a call. Though the challenge represents the most extreme conditions, the fact is firefighters are expected to be ready for anything when they arrive at a fire. “Every one of those movements simulates something we possibly could be doing at a fire scene,” said Kevin Duncan, fire prevention officer with Greater Napanee Emergency Services. Duncan, who has competed in the challenge on a couple of occasions, says by the time they reach the finish line competitors are carrying about 300 pounds worth of gear and fire hoses. “It’s gruelling,” said Duncan. “It’s really hard on

the competition will open the floor up to non-firefighters as GNES hosts a Corporate Challenge on Aug. 19 starting at 6 p.m. For a $100 entry fee, local businesses can enter a team of three to five and race against other amateur teams. “They’ll be doing the exact same course that firefighters run in full gear expect for the Corporate Challenge they don’t have to put the full gear on,” said Duncan. “We’ll supply them with gloves and hats if they want.” To register for the Corporate Challenge, drop by the Greater Napanee fire hall located at 66 Advance Ave. Proceeds from the event go Greater Napanee FireFit Team A Greater Napanee FireFit teammember participates in Scott FireFit cham- to charity. U-14 Novice Express bound for Winnipeg Squirts win gold in Stouffville

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

iding a string of six straight hits, the Doyle’s Windows and Sunrooms Napanee Novice Express pumped out double digit runs for a 10-0 quarter-final defeat over Brampton Gold in this weekend’s Grand Championships, held in Mississauga. That victory was a historic one, as the novice girls became the first Softball Napanee girls team to officially qualify for Nationals, which they will take part in Aug. 17-21 in Winnipeg, Man. Though they’ve sent clubs to Eastern Canadians in previous years, this will mark the first time qualifying for a cross-country tournament. Their main objective of earning a spot in the top four accomplished, the Napanee girls would go on to win the semifinals and advance to the provincial finals where they would ultimately finish as silver medalists. Napanee opened the tournament with some flare, beating La Salle ‘03 by a score of 10-0. Megan Morrow pitched five scoreless innings while Alexa Oriecuia closed it out in the sixth. The two pitchers combined to allow just one base runner. In their second game they quickly fell behind 9-3 to La Salle ‘02 team after the second inning. Down but not out, the Express turned to Morrow to throw up some zeroes while their offense went to work, battling back

The Doye’s Windows and Sunrooms Novice Express were ‘A’ finalists at the Grand Championship, held this weekend in Mississauga. They have now qualified for Nationals later this month in Winnipeg. to end the game in a 9-9 tie. After rolling through the Barrie Storm 12-2, that set the Express up with a quarter-final showdown with their rival Brampton Gold, a trip to Nationals at stake. “It came down after 16 teams and we wind up playing (Brampton) in the quarterfinal game to see who qualified for Winnipeg,” said Express coach Scott Morrow. “The girls played exceptional.” Each meeting with these clubs has been a hard fought battle as they have proven why they are considered to be among the best in Ontario.

The game was 2-0 for most of the game before the Express bats roared to life with the big inning to take the edge off and eventually clinch the 10-0 victory. Megan Morrow would toss a complete game for the win. They kept chugging in the semifinals, using backto-back home runs from Gracie Hearns and Amber Weese to help power a defeat of Mississauga North by a count of 12-2. Their quest for gold was ended with a 5-1 loss to top ranked Halton Hills. Sharp defense all weekend long helped propel the

Express to the second overall finish. As strong as the bats were, it was their glove work that really impressed the coach, as he noted every single player contributed in one way or another. Napanee will look to stay sharp with a couple of league games prior to making the trip west to Manitoba. On Aug. 11 they will host a fundraising exhibition game at the Napanee Fairgrounds, when they take on the Intermediate Girls Express, starting at 8:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out the diamonds and cheer the girls on and give them a big send

off before they take off for their first ever Nationals. ■ The Napanee Express Squirt Boys Fastball Team took home another gold medal over the weekend by winning the 2016 Stouffville Classic Squirt Fastball Tournament in Stouffville. Napanee hit the ball very hard and often in the one day tournament, going undefeated with a record of 4-0-1 in the field of six In the first game, the Express started slow against the host team, coming from behind and scoring five in their final at bat to tie Stouffville 8-8. In their second game,

Napanee was paired up against an inexperienced Ennismore team that were eventually mercied by the Express in five innings by a score of 16-4. In the semifinal game, Napanee was up against a very strong Simcoe Braves team that had convincingly won each of their first two games. Despite the Braves exceptional pitching, Express bats heated up with the afternoon sunsmashing 18 hits for a 12-6 win. The gold medal game saw two old rivals – Napanee Express and the Springbrook Royals. To that point in the year, both teams had a record of 3-3-1 against each other – with Springbrook recently taking gold away from Napanee in the final of the OASA Eastern Ontario Qualifier two weeks earlier. It was apparent that Napanee were fired up for the rematch. The Express scored 16 runs off of 17 hits – mercying the Royals 16-3 in five innings played. All told, the Express scored a whopping 52 runs in four games played with contributions from everywhere in the lineup. A very telling tournament statistic was the fact that all 10 Napanee players had a batting average .375 or better for the tournament and nine of 10 players hit for an average of .500 or better. Napanee’s pitching and defense continued to be extremely solid throughout the entire day. The Squirt Boys have now won an incredible three gold medals and a silver at the four tournaments they have played this year. The boys look forward to competing in the OASA - All Ontario Fastball Championship held in Springbrook Aug. 12 to 14.

Axemen qualify for ISC Kingston team boasts plenty of Express ties Beaver Sports

Made up of about half Napanee Express graduates, the men’s team known as the Kingston Axemen have qualified for the International Softball Congress Fastball World Tournament, which will take place in Quad City, Ill Aug. 13-20. Ranked No. 9 in the world, the Kingston team — which is coached by Napanee’s Daryl MacDonald and Brad MacDonald — finished as runner-ups in the second

tier at the ISC tournament last season. They feature nine players who at one point or another played for the Express. To help cover their travel costs they’re appealing to local businesses in the community who might be interested in getting their name on a sponsorship banner and on social media. They’re seeking $500 for the rights to have a company name on their banner which they will display at the international tournament. Anyone inter-

ested can call 613-483-8087. The Axemen have been on a roll this season, finishing their tournament schedule with back-to-back semifinal appearances. Late last month they went 2-1-1 in pool play at a tournament in Tavistock, including a 5-4 walk-off win over the 11th ranked Northeast Drillers from Pennsylvania. In the playoffs they rallied back from a 2-0 hole to defeat the second ranked Toronto Gators in extra innings.

The family of the late Jo Galt would like to thank all those who honoured her and took care of us at the time of her passing. Those who sent cards, flowers and made meals and donations, thank you. Thanks to Lindsey at the Hannah Funeral Home for his careful attention to details. Our gratitude to friend Colleen and Rosemary, who were so helpful with the reception and Rev. Christine Sloan for making the service so personable. Heartfelt thanks to those who could attend. Jo had many friends, most of them enjoyed a good game of euchre. We hope she is still getting her share of lone hands. With sincerest thanks, Dwight, Linden and families.

COMMUNITY / 27

B E AV E R

Simple fun at Crokinole parties ACK in the days when money was not very plentiful and entertainment was ‘home grown’, community get-togethers usually revolved around one of two games: euchre or Crokinole. The latter is believed to have been played as early as the 1860s in rural Canada, although the first known board can be traced back only as early as 1876. It was fashioned by Eckhardt Wettlaufer, a sign painter who resided in Perth County, Ont. It was a popular pastime of the Amish and Mennonites, although its roots likely go back to older British, French, and German cultures, where similar pastimes were enjoyed. The name seems to have come from the French ‘croquer’ (to flick) and ‘croquinoler’ (to flick repeatedly) — which is precisely what takes place as the contest progresses. With each participant having five shots, 20 such moves take place before the round in completed. The accompanying graphic, like many other pictures, is worth a thousand words. would move to the next table, with the losers left stuck in the same spot. However, both winning and losing partners were split up, gaining new partners-incrime for the next round. Individuals took their scores with them from location to location — or, perish the thought —remained stationary for the duration. Often an enterprising organizer would call the winner(s) — remember

each player added to his own individual score with each move — to come forward, to receive the grand prize (usually a nick-knack from the local ‘five and dime” store). A little humour was added when the loser(s), who stayed put all night, or moved to another table the least number of times, was singled out for the consolation award. It was called the ‘booby prize’ (before the

term held any crude connotations). Often a snack was served, either by the hostess or the local Ladies Aid Society. Nary a nickel changed hands. It was an enjoyable night of informal fun, with the constant change of partners and opponents granting opportunity to chat, joke, and kibbutz around — and hear about Farmer John’s new-born calf.
