Good weather, full crowds for Napanee Fair Organizer says fair board hopes to ‘build on successes’ BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

The lead organizer for the Napanee Fair says he’s more than pleased with how 183rd edition of the annual showcase of local agriculture unfolded. Lennox Agricultural Society President Dave McNichols, speaking just before the fair officially ended on Monday, said with good crowds and good weather, it was hard not to be satisfied. “Everybody seemed to go away happy, and we got a lot of good ideas for next year,” he said. He said some recently-added features proved to be growing in popularity, including the lawn tractor races which took place on Monday morning. It was only the second time the races were part of the fair. “Our lawn mower races are a crowd pleaser,” said McNichols. “When we were setting up (Monday) morning at 7:307:45 a.m., there were people in the stands waiting for them. I think last year we had six or eight racers, but this year we had lots of them. We had to print off (more entry forms) at the office.” Another popular returnee was Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo. “(It) was a big draw,” he said, particularly among young people. “We’ve got enough programs here that we can keep them here all day.” Some Napanee Fair mainstays, meanwhile, had some of their biggest draws in recent memory. “Our Holstein show this year was amazing, the biggest numbers we’ve had in a lot of years. (I think there’s) just more interest in it,” he said. “Our 4H shows were good, and the ladies had an amazing show in the palace, as usual.” McNichols reported that ticket sales for the midway were up. Meanwhile, it was standing-room-only for the demolition derby on Monday afternoon. Renowned fiddler Kelli Trottier of Kingston played to a good grandstand crowd on Saturday night. Both Friday’s tractor pull and Sunday’s heavy horse pull were also well attended. As always, the Lennox and Addington 4H club had a strong presence, not only with its shows but also with its project displays. When asked how the fair board might improve the fair in the future, McNichols said that, “what we’re going to try to do moving forward is take what we do and not only do it well but do it better, try to build on our successes.” An ongoing challenge, he says, is finding a way to attract more youth to the fair. “We need more interest things for young people. We’re not exactly sure what that will be, but we’re working on it,” he said. Regardless of what the fair board comes up with, McNichols said the board will continue to put farming at the forefront of all they do. “It’s really important, as an agricultural fair, that we keep our roots as ‘agricultural’. We’re really trying to build on that here,” he said. For more pictures from the Napanee Fair weekend, see Photo Page 23.

Owner from Napanee was on Hot Rod tour BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

A Napanee Valley Cruiser’s club member had his 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible stolen in Guelph while participating in the Canadian Hot Rod Tour. Lloyd and Kay Goddard, of Greater Napanee, said the car was stolen July 27 from a Holiday Inn in Guelph. Their car was the only one touched or stolen from a parking lot filled with numerous classic cars. Lloyd said he believes someone wanted his specific car for parts. “We did not expect any kind of problems. There

He said when he cancelled his two credit cards, which were inside his wallet inside the car, neither had been used, which leads him to believe someone wanted to car for parts. “I didn’t think there’d ever be a problem. Since the Goddard’s classic car was stolen, a Facebook post with a picture of the car and the details of it being stolen has been circulating on social media sites. Doghouse Studios gets reprieve from council Property not zoned for banquet hall facility BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Doghouse Studios will be able to continue functioning as a banquet hall but Greater Napanee council has advised the owner that if zoning has not been changed by the end of September, the business could be shut down. “At this point in time it is staff ’s position that the use is currently not permitted within that zone,” explained Gib Garrett, Greater Napanee Information Services and Planning Clerk. “From the town’s perspective, I think working with the business – provided that it keeps moving forward – is best. If it doesn’t keep moving forward, then we’ll have no choice but to act on it,” he continued. “We’re not in the business of shutting businesses down,” Greater Napanee Mayor Gord Schermerhorn told Doghouse Studios’ owner Cristiano Vilela during a special session of council on Tuesday morning. However, Schermerhorn was adamant that Vilela must ensure the building is zoned properly by the end of September. “I have instructed staff to work with you. We’re not going to close down your events, but at the same time, we’re not going to prolong this too much longer. This has been going on since 2009 so we expect you to work as quickly as possible with our staff,” said Schermerhorn. “If an application has not been brought forward by the

end of September, then we’re going to have to step in.” Vilela said he was not aware that he was not zoned properly, as the wording for the functions he is able to provide was confusing. He said he is willing to work with staff to ensure the building is zoned properly and as soon as possible. “I would like to get some clarification in regards to the zoning and guide you through what my thought process has been over the past few years in regard to the zoning and use of the building,” said Vilela. “As I reviewed the zoning bylaw for the town, one of the uses permitted, under the M1 zone, is for assembly use. According to the town’s bylaw, assembly allows for a number of different community events, from athletic to civic to religious to political, etc. …” Terry Gervais, Fire Chief and General Manager of Greater Napanee’s Emergency Services, said the municipality should not be concerned about being liable while Vilela’s building is not zoned properly. “There are lots of instances where the corporation of the town that building codes, zoning codes and fire codes, are being changed and when the problem is identified we allow the resident or the owner to work through it, unless it’s something with an immediate threat. In this case, it’s very similar to other stuff we’re doing. I like the timelines that his worship (Schermerhorn) has put on — that gives us six weeks to move this on,” explained Gervais.

Town to move on vacant school board properties

BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Town of Deseronto council said issues regarding vacant property and a deteriorating wall, both owned by the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board, have been on the books for far too long —and council plans to attend a school board meeting to discuss both issues during a deputation. Council has been pressuring the school board both to fix the wall on Dundas Street, as well as to develop the HPEDSB property or sell/give it to the municipality to develop. Council plans to discuss both of these issues with the school board during the next HPEDSB meeting. The sidewalk and the wall have been decaying for years. Council said it wants a promise from the school board that it will fix the wall so council can fix its sidewalk. “I think anybody that’s walked that sidewalk doesn’t have to be told it’s in bad shape,” said Deseronto Mayor Norm Clark. “The sidewalk is an absolute disgrace. I’m surprised we haven’t heard more about it.” Councillor Edgar Tumak, the councillor that

has been adamant that the sidewalk and wall being restored, said he believes both need to be repaired in order to ensure one does not continue to decay the other. “It’s silly of us to repair a sidewalk, which is narrower than the standard is acceptable now, if we don’t have co-operation of the school board. The school

board is saying, ‘we’ve done an engineering report,’ but did we actually get that report? Did we get any follow up? We have to work together, and even that is not occurring,” said Tumak. “I’d like to bring up the issue as part of the election for the school trustees,” he added.

Students get down to business Program helps budding entrepreneurs have profitable summer BY ADAM PRUDHOMME

working opportunities. As for the other ventures there is Smith’s Country Clean Power Wash, which is a portable power washer that cleans both farm equipment and cars and Reese’s Polished Occasions, which plans corporate and social events. “They were able to identify a distinct need in the community that they could fill, said Dajana Turkovic, Summer Company coordinator with KEDCO. “A hot dog cart, a car wash service and swimming lessons, they all are kind of niche services but they’ve really identified something that’s needed. From the government’s point of view, they’re hoping by encouraging students’ entrepreneurial spirit it will lead to more start ups in communities across the province. The four Napanee students, who are among 31 combined in the Kingston area, represent an increase over previous years. Turkovic hopes that next year even more students will explore a start up as an option for the summer. The application process begins in January. “It’s a great opportunity to try your hand at running your own business and to have a bit of funding to do it, added Turkovic. For more on the program visit www.KingstonEntrepreneurs.ca.

But then we had someone come into our business class and talk about it and I thought it was great to get some mentorship and start up cash to make it a little easier to start a business. Already armed with Red Cross training, Woods had everything he needed to actually run the business, he just needed a little help with some of the administrative

work. “I didn’t really know the process but (KEDCO) helped out and gave me lots of helpful tips and guided us along the process, Woods said. Though they may not all have aspirations of turning their ideas into a full-time business for their career, the experience they get is transferable. “They do what any other business owner does to open a business, said Darling. “They register the business and have to consider all aspects of running a business. Every grant dollar that gets awarded must be budgeted. Along with the grants the students get 15 hours of business training and net-

Deputy Mayor Clarence Zieman suggested the mayor, deputy mayor and Tumak — along with any other interested councillors and staff — attend the next HPEDSB meeting and discuss the issues, in person, as a deputation. “I think you’re right, (Edgar), whether there’s an election or not, you’ve been on this for the past few years and nothing has really gotten done, said Zieman. “This has gone on for two or three years and something has to be done. If we’re responsible for the sidewalk, then we need to fix it, but there’s no use fixing the sidewalk if they’re not going to fix the wall. Council would also like to see the wall pushed back when it is repaired so the sidewalk can be widened. This would bring the sidewalk up to present-day standards, as well as allow the snow removal equipment to clear the sidewalk. “The kids cross at Fourth Street, and then they walk along that sidewalk to Centre Street and up to school. That wall and the sidewalk, both of them, something should be done with it, said Clark. Zieman said that if the school board were to give the town the property, then the town would fix the wall itself.

As Ontario’s youth unemployment rate continues to rise, four local students have taken matters into their own hand this summer and launched their own businesses. Working with Kingston Economic Development Corporation and the Ontario government’s Summer Company program, students Tyler Ballance, Zac Woods, Avery Smith and Katrina Reese are now their own boss running their own companies. To help get their venture off the ground they were eligible for up to $1,500 in government grant money, awarded to them once they presented a viable business plan. “It’s an opportunity for students to experience the start-up and running of their business, said KEDCO’s Senior Business Consultant Rebecca Darling. “They develop their business plan with us, we’re their coaches and their mentors before they can even put their business plan forward to the ministry. It’s the ministry and the government that makes the decision. To qualify for the program the applicants must be 15-29 years of age and returning to either high school or post-secondary classes in the fall. After that they’re free to present any ideas they feel have a legitimate chance of being viable. “It requires you to make your own business plan and through making that plan you meet with the KEDCO staff and they help you develop your business plan with your numbers and help with your projections, said Ballance, who runs T Dog Hot Dog Stand in Kingston’s City Park. “They were a big help along the way. They showed me where to get cheaper (supplies). They were tremendous. Ballance, who is going into his Grade 12 year at Ernestown Secondary School, says the idea of starting a business was once very daunting before meeting with KEDCO. That meeting proved to be eye opening and informative. “When I first started projections, what I wanted to buy was completely different

EDITORIAL

Remembering the cost of WWI The First World War began, for Canada at least, 100 years ago this week. Many, including our own Prime Minister Stephen Harper who marked the occasion on Monday, believe that it was the event that “forged” Canada as an independent country, able to stand on its own two feet and apart from its colonial motherland, Great Britain. Certainly, it was that. But we paid a very heavy price for that sense of independence. More than 60,000 Canadians made the ultimate sacrifice in that conflict; you can visit the cenotaph at the Lennox and Addington County courthouse to see the names of those county residents who left for war and did not come home. Of course, there were hundreds of thousands more soldiers who returned home with injuries. If it can be argued that Canada ‘came of age’ during the horrors of the First World, it can also be said that the world came of age, or it least began a most painful transition into modernity. It’s a transition that we can scarcely conceive of today. The First World War represented the industrialization of war. When this conflict began, even the combatants themselves had little idea of just how efficiently they could now cut one another down, thanks to advances in military weaponry at the time. Old, romantic notions of war and soldiery died with the thousands of soldiers killed each day, particularly in those opening battles of the war. Why did this war start? Well, the assassination of Austria’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in June 1914 is the accepted spark for the conflict, although the answer to how this seemingly isolated event conflagrated into the greatest war the world had known to that point is more elusive; indeed, you can find a wide range of opinions among scholars who study this period. We do know that a patchwork of various alliances and competing empires brought the players to the table — including Canada, which automatically joined the First World War because Great Britain had declared war. When the war ended, those competing empires (at least, those on the winning side) divvied up much of the territory and created new borders, many of which still exist today. Not all those places (particularly the Middle East) are peaceful. And, of course, the world took steps to ensure that this kind of a conflict never happened again with the creation of the League of Nations. We all know how that turned out. Indeed, while the causes of the First World War are debatable, it’s widely accepted that the First World War was a big reason why the Second World War started. But even if we accept that Canada came of age in the First World War, and even if we accept that Canada should be proud of how it contributed to that war — there’s no doubt that we punched above our weight — we must ask the same question we always ask when we go to war: was it all worth it? War is sometimes necessary, but it’s always a costly proposition. Further, even if we admire soldiers’ bravery and remember their terrible sacrifices, war is not something to be glorified. One-hundred years on from the start of Canada’s involvement in the First World War, we should still be mindful, first and foremost, of the price paid by those fighting for King and Country.

Green energy short circuiting agriculture The Ontario government is bungling energy and agriculture, resulting in a higher cost of living for essentials, in particular relating to Ontario hydro and the Ministry of Agriculture as regulated by the province of Ontario; directly and indirectly contributing to the rocketing cost of energy and food. In a recent commentary by Ontario Federation of Agriculture Director Larry Davis, he said, “Here’s the problem with growing urban centres… Ontario is losing 350 acres of farmland every day.” While there are seven classifications of soils, classes two to four are less productive, but still capa-

ble of producing food. The OFA is calling for the protection of classes one, two, three and four. Either they are not being listened to, not calling loud enough, or not enough citizens have joined the chorus. Urban growth is a definite problem (to wit: the development of the Niagara Peninsula, one of the only three soft fruit production areas in Canada). Solar farms are another costly fiasco by the Ontario government, resulting in thousands of acres of productive farmlands taken out of production, and increasing energy and food costs for all — and creating a visual blight.

For example, in the Napanee area alone, there are five solar farms within 30 kilometres, only one of which is on marginal land. The municipality and neighbours have no say. Each individual site requires costly transmission lines (rather than locating all collectively on the thousands of acres of marginal land in the area). Then, we pay more for the hydro power than it is being sold for. Also, in 20 years or so there is the matter of disposing of the solar farm materials, many of which are non-recyclable. Dorm room design essentials It’s hard to believe we are already in our first week of August. My three kids have been asking me to go back-toschool shopping for a few weeks now. My husband recently took the kids for their back-to-school supplies and I took my daughter Pareza shopping for clothes with her aunts and cousins on the weekend. Although my children are only in elementary school, there are many families that are getting their kids ready to go to university or college. I can still remember my move to Ottawa to attend the University of Ottawa; the excitement and the fear of finally living on my own. I wasn’t making my move into a dorm room, but a charming little one bedroom apartment above a home in ‘Sandy Hill.’ It was a five minute walk to campus, and I was ready to take the next big step in life. The transition from high school to college and university is more than just educational. It marks a big leap in your life, when you begin making independent decisions. All this leads to a big change in your overall personality. Hence, you have to design and decorate your personal space according to what you are comfortable with. The thought of a dorm room evokes an idea of a dull, messy room, filled with books. Generally this is where you just want to crash, and not spend any time there, apart from sleeping. However, for some, it evokes thoughts of a personal space, books organized in the right manner. Since most dorm rooms are inexpensive, they might not be too luxurious. They are provided typically with basic facilities like beds, desks, dressers and a carpet. Many may find it quite boring to live in such a place. However, you can be creative and decorate your room in your own style. This small room is going to be your home for several months, so you should make it

of putting them up, is to have a clothes-line, generally used for hanging clothes, running across a wall to clip up your favourite photographs. Dorm floors are usually covered in either linoleum tiles or, worse, worn-out wallto-wall carpeting. No school will allow alterations to these, even if money was no object, but they can certainly be covered up with area rugs or even a cut-to-size broadloom carpet remnant, available at many carpet stores at a low price. There are even floor decals available, which like wall decals can be removed, to add flair to a dull industrial floor tile. Beyond the bedding, which should always be new, there are always great bargains at flea markets, thrift stores, yard sales and even the sidewalk on trash day. When picking up second hand goods, always remember that they should be clean, in good repair and that you love them. A new look is always just a can of paint away. Your dorm room should be organized in all ways as the things around the room compliment each other. It can be exciting, overwhelming and confusing to decide where to start. But once you and your roommate (if you have one) have decided of the things to get in to the room you may find this task much easier and interesting. There are adequate things in the market which you can take for the dorm. Be creative and innovative while planning out for the dorm as it should stand apart from other roommate dorms and be your home away from home for the next nine months. Staff picks: The Girl You Left Behind Karen Scott is the Co-ordinator of the County Libraries’ Bath and South Fred Branches. Always eager to suggest a new book to library patrons, one of Karen’s latest go-to recs is The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes. “In 1916, Sophie Lefevre is a young wife living in a town occupied by the Germans, while her artist husband is fighting at the F r o n t , explains Karen. “The first part of the Coles’ Notes book takes us into Sophie’s world and life, and what it was like to live under enemy occupation. Edouard’s portrait of Sophie catches the interest of the local Kommandant, causing her to risk everything in the hope of seeing her one true love again. “Nearly a century later, we meet Liv, a young widow whose husband bought her the painting as a wedding gift shortly before his death. Liv meets Paul and feels for the first time since her husband’s death that she might have a chance at a romantic relationship again, at least until she finds out he works for a company that specializes in recovering stolen art, and that the painting is being looked for by the descendants of Edouard Lefevre. Liv is determined to fight to keep the only thing she has left of her husband, and Paul believes he’s fighting for what’s right in returning what was stolen in war nearly a century before — neither is willing to budge and the case eventually winds up in court. “There is plenty for the reader to discover,” says Karen. “What happened after Sophie left St. Peronne? Was the painting stolen, or given away at some point? Did Sophie and Edouard survive the war? Did they ever find each other? And will Liv get to keep the painting that means so much to her?” “I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, has an interest in the First World War, likes romance, adventure, or just a good, engaging story,” Karen concludes.

Field guide to butterflies long needed The field guide was out of date before it was even launched! This frustrating experience happens to all authors of field guides and reference books when they deal with something as dynamic as wildlife. It even happened to me a year ago when I updated the checklist to the birds of Prince Edward County. After running off over 200 copies, not more than one week later, a new species was confirmed and added to the cumulative list of birds for this area. And, so it was for Dr. Paul Catling when he produced his Field Guide To Butterflies of Prince Edward County and Surrounding Region. The intoxicating and unmistakable aroma of the freshly printed books had not even faded when a new butterfly species touched down on County vegetation. The little glassywing, a rather dark butterfly belonging to a group known as skippers was actually found by the author himself, at Macaulay Mountain. However, its omission wasn’t that serious. The uncommon butterfly was already in the book; it just hadn’t been seen in Prince Edward

County. Dr. Catling likely had a feeling that such an omission might take place, given the way he designed the book. Although the book does focus on the County species as the name suggests, he structured the coverage area to include everything within a 100 km radius of Bloomfield. Roughly, from Gananoque, west to Port Hope, and from Bon Echo south to the south shore of Lake Ontario in the U.S. However, Prince Edward County remains the focus, and each species in the book is indicated as to whether or not it has been documented for Prince Edward County. A checklist at the back of the book simplifies the search for a species presence in the area by breaking down the occurrence of each one treated, into Prince Edward County, Ontario in general, or New York State. Catling says the County’s natural landscape is remarkable and that guides to some of what exists here are long overdue. Hence, the new book on butterflies to accompany those already written on the birds, herptiles and wildflowers in response to

Terry Sprague

Outdoor Rambles the need for these guides, given the current interest in our flora and fauna. Catling acknowledges that only two field naturalists have done any previous work on the butterflies of the area. Yvette and David Bree, both Park Naturalists, have gathered records and sightings that are now in the data bases. Over 100 butterfly species are treated in this compact 63-page full colour guide, but only 77 of those are attributed to Prince Edward County (78, if you count

the glassywing). The author attributes the relatively low number to lack of study, but thanks to the Brees, the list is certainly higher than what it could have been had they not helped. The new book just doesn’t dive head first into the species account, but rather, devotes 15 pages to gently introducing the reader to the area covered, how to use the book, butterfly life history, food preferences, some information on recording sightings through the Internet’s Ontario Butterfly Atlas and Ebutterfly (much like eBird), as well as some key areas to look for butterflies. The book also includes a page on the metamorphosis of everyone’s favourite butterfly, the Monarch. There is also a section on current threats and conservation measures. Included in the book, of course, is one of our more recent immigrants, the giant swallowtail, first arriving here some 15 years ago, and now widely spread. In more southern regions of its distribution, the larva feeds on citrus, where it has been given the unflattering nickname of

“orange dog.” This might explain the butterfly’s attraction to prickly ash which can also produce a citrusy smell. It comes by it quite honestly, since prickly ash is a member of the Rue family, along with oranges and lemons, etc. Prince Edward County Field Naturalists president Myrna Wood says that Dr. Catling prepared the book for the conservation of natural habitats, with all proceeds being directed to the naturalist group, founded in 1997. “Firstly, it is going toward the public education of all buyers of the book and, secondly, proceeds may be used to fund other activities that benefit conservation of the South Shore specifically.” Butterflies of Prince Edward County and the Surrounding Region is available at Books & Company, in Picton. Brown family members took up county wardenship twice A C K

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago August 5, 1964 n Provincial and local officials were on hand for the sod turning for the new Lennox and Addington County General Hospital. The 75-bed hospital was expected to open in about one year’s time. Construction was expected to start in about one month. Among those at the sod turning included Ontario Minister of Health Dr. M.B. Dymond and the chairman of the Napanee Hospital Association, Dr. Brant E. Bergstome. The ceremony was held in conjuction with ongoing L&A County centennial celebrations. The health minister congratulated the hospital association for being able to bring the hospital from conception to reality in only seven years. n Events connected with the county’s centennial enjoyed capacity crowds. The celebration got off to a rousing start at the Armoury with a dance. Two orchestras took to the stage, playing music suitable for round and square dancing. Most of those in attendance were wearing old-fashioned costumes.

35 Years Ago August 8, 1979 n A Saint John, NB, resident had a memorable summer vacation for all the wrong reasons. Lawrence Butler, 45, was driving over a level rail crossing on Deseronto Road, pulling a 16-foot camper trailer, when his hitch broke, leaving the camper in the middle of the railway tracks. Butler immediately drove into Deseronto to get the hitch repaired. By the time he returned, however, a westbound CN train had reduced the trailer to pile of scrap. Two residents attempted to call CN to warn the railway about the trailer on the tracks, but no one answered the phone call. n More than 10,000 people attended the annual Napanee Fair. One of the most popular events proved to be the TransCanada Hell Drivers daredevil show on Monday night; fair board president John Sonneveld estimated that about 2,000 were in attendance to watch the show. Performance by East Wind and Al Cherney on Saturday night and Cam Shillington’s gospel groups on Sunday also drew crowds. “We had very good co-operation from Napanee and Richmond Township,” said Sonneveld. “All the directors pitched in. We had excellent co-operation.”

Special to the Beaver Editor’s Note: This is the 22nd of an ongoing series provided by L&A County to mark the municipality’s 150th anniversary. In the County of Lennox and Addington, the family names of the earliest pioneers endure. Many of the 138 individuals who have served as Lennox and Addington County wardens over the past 150 years are descendants of those first settlers. Frequently more than one generation of the same family has been honoured to serve as county warden. With the marriage of Richardson Brown and Mary Jane Reid on December 6, 1854, a Canadian union was established between two Irish Presbyterian immigrant families who had settled in the Township of Camden East, County of Lennox and Addington. Mary Jane was born in the Township of Camden East in 1835, six years after her parents James and Elizabeth (Wilson) Reid emigrated from the County of Tyrone in Northern Ireland to Ontario. Richardson, at age 14, came with his father James Brown and two sisters from County of Tyrone, Ireland to Canada in 1842 and by 1848 had acquired land in Concession 9, Township of Camden East, which is still owned by Richardson’s descendants. Two descendants of Richardson and Mary Jane Brown served as Reeve of the Township of Camden East and Warden of Lennox and Addington County. Their son Frederick (Fred) Richardson Brown was reeve of the Township of Camden East in 1935 and 1936 and county warden in 1936. Richardson’s and Mary Jane’s great grandson Douglas (Doug) Beverly Brown (Fred’s grandson) served as Reeve of Camden East Township from 1961 to 1964 and was also Warden of Lennox and Addington during the County’s centennial year, 1964. During Fred Brown’s term as warden in 1936, County council finally reached a settlement with Kingston General Hospital regarding a dispute over a bequest from the Reuben Schermehorn estate in 1916 that was conditional upon the county “erecting a House of Refuge”. County

council had not fulfilled the condition of the bequest by 1933 and the executors of the estate requested that the funds be given to Kingston General Hospital. This led to a series of legal actions ultimately headed towards an appeal before the Supreme Court of Canada. The matter was resolved just prior to the Supreme Court hearing when Kingston General Hospital offered the county 50 per cent of the Schermehorn estate revenue provided the county withdrew its appeal. The county was ultimately credited w i t h $11,933.80 as its share of the net proceeds from the Schermehorn estate. There are numerous references in the minutes of County council meetings held during 1936 regarding jurisdictional matters related to Lennox and Addington’s roads. While challenging the Ontario government for a charge to the county of 20 per cent of the cost of construction of the King’s Highway from Napanee to Kaladar, county council was also requesting that the Minister of Highways assume the Arden-Tamworth road and the road from the Hastings boundary to the ‘Denbigh Highway’ as King’s Highways. On Feb. 11, 1936, Warden Fred Brown and members of county council were administered oaths of allegiance to King Edward VIII who later abdicated in December that year. 1964 was an exciting time for Warden Doug Brown and county council as Lennox and Addington celebrated its 100th anniversary. Planning momentum was building throughout the first half of the year as county council and a host of volunteer committees prepared for the week of celebrations which were held from July 31 to Aug. 8, 1964. The program for Lennox and Addington’s centennial included a celebration ball, homecoming day, religious dedication day, civic day, old fashioned bargain days, sportsman’s day, youth day, ladies day, agriculture and industry day and a ‘Look to the Future’ Day. The celebration activities were deemed to be a tremendous success attended by thousands. Some of the other issues deliberated by Warden Doug Brown and county council included the

The Richardson Brown family was one of the Presbyterian families that settled in the northern conces-

sions of the Township of Camden East and established the Knox Presbyterian Church (later Reidville United Church) at Reidville. Richardson and his wife Mary Jane and their two descendants who served as Warden of Lennox and Addington County, Frederick Richardson and his grandson Douglas Beverly, are buried at the cemetery located there.

music of music – celtic, bluegrass, classic country, newer country, and folk, we have a variety, which is unusual for festivals, usually they try to stick to one genre,” said Dan. “Sunday we’re trying to gear it up as a bluegrass day because certain people just love the bluegrass,” he continued. Sunday morning will start off with gospel house at 10 a.m., followed by Balsam Blue, County Road 5, Grass Under Fire, and ending with Dan’s group: Country Rhythm. Friday’s events will start at 6 p.m. and last until midnight and will include an open mic session. Saturday’s performances will begin at noon and last until midnight, featuring a number of artists from across Ontario and even the east coast. “We have one that’s from the east coast, Blaine Henshaw, and he was here last year and e-mailed us wanting to come back because he liked it here… He’s a singer songwriter from Nova Scotia,” said Dan. “Don Cochran, I’ve known him for a long time

and he kind of helped to get this going… We’ve had him here every year. He belongs to the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame and he’s a very fantastic performer. He’s had lots of big hits across Canada. Neville Wells also belongs to the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame and he’s playing with Don Cochrane,” both of which will be performing Saturday, Dan continued. About 500 people attended last year’s festival and Dan hopes this year will be just as successful. The reason he and his wife organize the event each year is just to share their passion for music. “I’ve been involved with music most of my life and I’ve always wanted to have a festival. When we moved to the island here, we have a beautiful spot for it right on the water, so we talked about it and thought we’d give it a try. It’s fun doing the organizing and getting the music together,” he said. “It’s a good small festival and family oriented. We’re not trying to make any money out of it at all.” Last year Dan and Joan lost money on the event but

when the festival does make money the funds are donated on the Island. The year before last, funds were donated to the public radio station. “If there’s money leftover again we’ll be donating it to something here on the island,” said Dan. The three-day festival will also highlight local artists and talents of those on the island. “There are a lot of artists here on the island. There’s a lady here who’s putting on a display of her artwork and then there’s a lady that does pottery and she’s going to have a display. There’s even going to be some produce here from the island. It’s an islandoriented festival, to show people what it’s like here,” explained Dan. The festival will take place at 12675 Front Road, Amherst Island, Friday to Sunday. Friday and Sunday admission is $10 each and Saturday admission is $25. Weekend passes are $35, which includes camping, and kids under 12 are free. Get Connected for the 2014-2015 School Year 6 REASONS

WHY AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ARE WORTH THE EFFORT

• PHYSICAL ACTIVITY - With the growing problem of childhood obesity, children who participate in outdoor activities and sports get the exercise they need and develop habits that can help them avoid this problem and keep themselves physically fit. Sports also encourage teamwork and fair play, teaching kids valuable lessons in cooperation and respect for others. The children develop more coordination and are building healthier habits. • CREATIVITY - Arts, music, crafts, collecting... These are all activities that encourage creativity, but also help children learn problem-solving skills and encourage their natural curiosity. Children can explore their individual talents and feel greater confidence as they discover their abilities. • STRESS RELEASE - In an increasingly complex world, even children can feel stress. They are expected to do well in school and can often be subject to peer pressure. Activities that take place in a no-pressure environment and are just for fun are a good way to relax — a

healthy method for dealing with stress. In these group settings, kids can shed shyness and gain social skills through observation and casual interaction with other children. • BUILDING CONFIDENCE - Learning any new skill is an excellent way to build self-confidence. After-school activities teach specific skills, but are also an opportunity for kids to learn social skills like cooperation, negotiation and conflict resolution. Participation in these activities can subtly show them how to appropriately interact with others. They learn how to think on their feet and develop better communication skills while discovering new things they enjoy and can excel at. • TEAMWORK - Throughout our lives we need to understand and employ teamwork, and team sports help children with the concept of working together to achieve a common goal. In these activities, kids come to realize the importance of removing the focus from the individual and embracing the camaraderie of the team. They learn lifelong lessons about sportsmanship and can

enjoy the excitement of competition while understanding it isn't always about winning, but about participating and giving your best effort. • TIME MANAGEMENT - How do kids juggle all the things they have to do — school, homework, family time, friendships and after-school activities? Participating in a favorite activity is for fun and helps kids learn to plan and prioritize. Basic organizational skills become good habits as kids organize their supplies and equipment ahead of time in order to be ready for the activity. Allow older kids to be responsible for their own schedules, as long as they don't overdo activities and neglect school work and family time. Encourage your child to try a variety of after-school activities. The athletic child may find that they have a talent in music, while the science buff might excel in an art class or gain confidence playing soccer. It's good for children to be open to possibilities and allow themselves to discover new strengths and interests.

Midget Express reverse the curse out west Napanee’s U18s break old trends, win gold BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

haking off the disappointment of so many past tournaments, the Napanee Abundant Insulation Midget Express clubbed their way to a gold medal at the Western Canadian Midget Fastball Championship on Monday. Napanee capped off an undefeated weekend in Battleford, Sask. with a 178 mercy win in the gold medal game against the Irma Tigers. The Express struggled off the hop, however, as starter Alex Douglass allowed five runs in the first. He helped bail himself out of trouble in the home half however, ripping a 3-2 pitch over the fence for a grand slam. The Express continued to cruise from

That blast

served as a walk off as it gave them enough runs to officially make it a mercy. “We talked about if things weren’t going our

way, we’ve got to stay positive,” said Express head coach Brent Mills. “The bats were good enough all week that if there was an

issue we’d just hit our way out of it. These guys have been playing ball for a long time now, it was huge for them to go out and be suc-

cessful all weekend long.” As quickly as Napanee fell behind they were able to erase Irma’s lead with some long ball of their own. “The boys could have just let everything drop and not be up for the rest of the game,” said Mills. “In the next inning we got a few hits and got a few guys on base.” The Express offense was clicking during their 80 run at the tournament, which featured the top U18 fast pitch teams west of Manitoba. Only two of Napanee’s games, a 13-9 win over the Conquest Coyotes of Saskatchewan and a 5-4 win over the same Tigers they met in the finals, went the full seven innings. The other six were all decided by the fifth as the Express had scored enough to secure a mercy win. Mills says it would be impossible to single out one player as they all hit well throughout the roster.

inning on the golf course, thy surname is James. Bath’s Austin James continued the family tradition in Niagara on Friday, winning the Canadian Junior Boys Championship by four strokes, finishing 15 under par. Just one week prior his sister Augusta had claimed the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship in Woodstock. “I just wanted to stick to my game plan and try to make good golf shots,” said James, who entered the final round of the junior championship up by five strokes. “I was just trying to keep it going. I was playing well that week and just wanted to keep the rhythm going.” He ended his round with a one foot putt, beating out second place finisher Tony Gil. “It was definitely a great moment and some-

thing I’ll remember for the rest of my life, it was pretty special,” James said of that final shot. “I was playing really steady, I wasn’t making too many mistakes. I was trying to eliminate bogeys and I did a good job of that this tournament.” The weather was anything but cooperative throughout the tournament as rain forced Wednesday’s second round to leak into Thursday. James didn’t let that affect his game however as he went on to match the course’s record eight under par 64. When darkness forced the third round to be suspended until Friday, James again was unfazed. After finishing the third round he teed off on the final round just a few hours later that same day, finishing with an even par 72. With the win the James siblings will go down in history as the first duo to ever win a Canadian national title in the same

Growing up in a golf family, the James siblings have a bit of an advantage in that they can both spend ample time training on their home Loyalist Golf and Country Club, pushing each other to be better.

“It’s definitely good to have her around where I can kind of compare myself and try and get myself up to the level that she’s at,” said James. “It’s been really good when we’re both home we can go out and

practice together and I can work on my stuff.” Shortly after his win James was on the road again, heading to Glen Cove, N.Y. to serve as his sister’s caddy at the U.S. Women’s Amateur, which is running this week through Sunday. He did receive some great news before he left the province however, as he learned his national win had earned him an exemption into the PGA Tour Canada’s Great Waterway Classic, which will be held on his home course Aug. 21-24. “I’m very excited to play that event,” said James. “A big thank you to (tournament director) Brad Parkins and the people involved in that decision. I can’t wait to play at Loyalist. It’s going to be a great test to see what level my golf game is at.” His presence will add a home town flavour to the event which is expected to draw the top golfers on the Canadian Tour.

The Napanee AFW Construction Bantam Express closed out their year on a positive note, winning the OASA ‘B’ Provincials this past weekend in Campbellford. The young team, which featured all first time bantam players, showed excellent development throughout the season.

EXPRESS | Novice, Juniors play in Nationals this week CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 The Express chugged into the finals on the strength of an 11-2 win over the BC Fraser Valley Vipers, powered by Blake Hurley, Marcus Rice and Brockville pick up Shane McNish, who each banged out two hits. Kyle Ainsley delivered the win from the pitcher's circle, mixing in five Ks in five innings. Ainslie set the tone for the Express in the first game, twirling a one hitter against the same Vipers he'd meet later in the tournament, en route to a 16-0 win. In the second game they rolled over Saskatchewan's Pipestone Valley Pirates 9-1. Alex Douglass got the win, striking out eight in five innings. Brandon Tucker lead the offense, knocking in five runs with three hits. The gold medal helped this Express group get a huge monkey off their back, as they had developed a history of falling short in so many previous tournaments. They were relegated to

the Western Canadians when they placed fifth at the OASA qualifier in Tavistock in June. Only the top four teams were granted the right to represent the province at Nationals in Gander, NFLD, which got underway Tuesday and go through Sunday.

“They’ve got high expectations, having finished second as mostly a first-year group. Brent Mills, Napanee U21 Express coach That marked the third year in a row this age group had missed out on qualifying for nationals. Prior to heading out west the Express hosted the OASA Provincials, where they again disappointed with an early exit, getting bounced after just three games. Elsewhere the Napanee Shoeless Joe’s Junior

Express are set to represent the town and province at the U21 Fastpitch Championship, which runs Aug. 11-17 in Irma, Alta. They're coming off a silver finish at the 2013 event and will look to add ‘defending champions’ to their title when they play as the host team in 2015. This group is also still searching for its first gold medal at the national level. “They’ve got high expectations, having finished second as mostly a first year group, said Mills, who also serves as coach of the U21 team. “They’ll be pretty hungry to stay focused and keep their eye on the prize. They are also a bit stronger this year having picked up Ty Sebastian, who was on the gold medal winning Wiarton team in 2013. On the girls’ side the Novice Express are currently making Softball Napanee history. They’re playing at the U14 Girls Fastpitch Jamboree in B.C., becoming the first girls’ club from Napanee to play at the national level. They

were scheduled to begin their tournament against Chilliwack yesterday morning. Results weren’t known at presstime. They take on the BC Heat and BC Storm today. The tournament runs through Sunday. Napanee is playing as Ontario’s second entry.

Held July 19 at the club’s dojo located in Napanee’s Trinity United, the session was a chance for local students to get first hand training that instructor Carter Mitchell experienced while on a recent trip to Japan. “This seminar was designed to give our students a taste of practicing in Japan,” said Mitchell. “It’s an example of our study and our purpose is to pass it on.” Mitchell has made the trip several times in the past as part of his ongoing efforts to teach the style as

We also attended a huge tournament in Narita where we met Japan Karate Association officials, actually sat with them at the head table during the tournament.” Mitchell says he and Belleville instructor Martin Salisbury were treated as celebrities during their visit, as is the Shoseikan custom for its foreign instructors. The main purpose of their visit was to ensure that they continue to teach the style as the Japanese masters do it so the style is uniform throughout all pockets of the globe. “Our students really take advantage of our close lineage to Japan,” said Mitchell. “It's great to be able to offer them this level of instruction. We’re looking forward to hosting Shihan Hayashi next year.” Mitchell teaches a class year round in martial arts and self defense.

Rootin’ tootin’ good time at Tamworth’s Western Day

BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

Soon, main street Tamworth will be transformed into the wild west — in a kid-friendly kind of way, of course. On Aug. 16, the village will play host to ‘Western Day’, intended to be a fun, low-cost family event. “This is our first time, but

we’ve been planning it for two or three months,” said Marg Weese, chair of the event’s organizing committee. “It’s just for fun, just a hoot, without the parents having to dig in their pockets.” The event takes place in the village from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will feature a number of ‘old-fashioned’ games like a pie-eating contest, a fishing pond, find the straw in the straw stack and cow-patty

bingo. Children are invited to get in on the western act by dressing up like a cowboy or a cowgirl; those with the best costumes will get a prize. In fact, says Weese, every child will leave with some sort of prize. Kids will also be named deputies to help to track down ‘Bad Bart’, an outlaw who will undoubtedly be skulking around the village

for the day. Once they track him down, the kids will bring him to justice before the judge at the jailhouse. The young deputies will also have the power to arrest and detain anyone who isn’t in western garb; any transgressors will have to pay a small fee or don a bandana to get out on bail. “The whole day is for fun, no cost,” said Weese. “The streets will

Life changes equal lifestyle changes T H E

B E AV E R

Separation or divorce – Sparks can fly when each spouse has a different agenda for how the sale of a home should be handled. Be sure to include a lawyer in your discussions – a lawyer can provide valuable information to help you and your spouse reach an agreement.

Major life changes often become the catalyst for selling a home. Whether for employment, financial or family changes, selling a home and deciding on the next move can be an overwhelming experience. If you’re thinking about replacing one home for another, be sure to prepare for the process by doing as much up-front research as possible. If you are retiring – You may want to sell in order to access the equity in your home to travel. But what do you come back to? A Realtor who specializes in the seniors’ real estate market can show you the many options available including downsizing to a smaller home or condominium, or moving to a retirement community. You’ve lost your job – Unfortunately, in such a situation, you may feel you have no choice but to sell your home. In this case, talk to your Realtor – he or she will help you set a realistic price to move the property as quickly as possible, and provide options for your next move.

Thursday, August 7, 2014

Your family is growing – Growing families tend to set their sights on larger homes, or homes in family friendly neighbourhoods. Empty nesters, on the other hand may be looking to trade in their single family home for a maintenance-free condominium. A Realtor can help you sell your current home and find a new one that fits your lifestyle.

You’re looking to upgrade, or downgrade – During a strong sellers’ market a Realtor can show you how you could potentially gain financially by selling and moving up to a larger home. Or, if you are having financial difficulties, your mortgage lender, lawyer and Realtor will be able to provide options that fit your situation. For example, you may be able to decrease your monthly mortgage payments, increase your amortization period or sell your home and buy a smaller, more affordable one. Whatever your reasons for deciding to sell your home, a Realtor can help you identify your objectives early in the process and help you make the right choices along the way. To learn more about selling your home, visit www.wedothehomework.ca. This article is provided by local REALTORS® and the Ontario Real Estate Association for the benefit of consumers in the real estate market.

Tis’ the season many Ontarians look to spend some quality time at a cottage. If you don’t already own a cottage perhaps you rent one or hopefully receive invites from family or friends. One or two weeks of this leisurely lifestyle can also get one thinking about one day owning a cottage. What follows is information that may help you if borrowing for a cottage is in your future. First I’m making an assumption of 10% down payment which means lender would require mortgage insurance. You should know that In Canada, there are 3 companies that insure Mortgages; CMHC, Genworth & Canada Guaranty. This past May 30th CMHC has de-

cided to no longer insure second homes. However Genworth & Canada Guaranty still does and for the purpose of this article I’ll focus on Genworth’s program because it is broader. Here is a summary of their "Vacation/Secondary Home" program. There are two types of homes for the program. Type A which is a true second home meaning such things as owner occupied, readily marketable and only 5% down payment required. Type B property is same characteristics as "A" however here are some further considerations: - Minimum 10% down payment required - Does not have to be owner occupied - Property need not be winterized - Seasonal access permitted (road not plowed in winter) - Maximum 25 year amortization - Genworth has minimum credit bureau scores that must be met - Gifted down payments from family NOT allowed. Must have own resources. (Call me about this if you have questions) Property Requirements - Cottage - Foundation may be floating

(ex: sitting on blocks) - A wood stove, fireplace, stove or heat blower is acceptable. - Water source needn't be drinkable. However, there must be running water in the home - Boat access only accepted (It may be difficult to find a Lender to agree) - Must be zoned and used as residential, rural or seasonal - At minimum, property must have a kitchen, 3-piece bathroom, bedroom, and common area. - Remaining economic life must be 25 years - Good quality construction with no signs of deferred maintenance - There must be good market appeal in the area with no adverse influences - Eligible for the Purchase Plus Improvements Program - Depending on down payment percentage, Genworth premiums currently range from 1.45% to 3.15%

Property and borrowing requirements aside, there are other considerations before purchasing a cottage. There will likely be an appraisal fee. Land transfer taxes of course. If you have a house and cottage you will have two kitchens, multiple bathrooms and bedrooms. Laun-

dry in two places? Potentially two sets of tools, gardening supplies and lawn cutting equipment. There is the cost of fishing equipment, boat, life jackets, jet skis, wakeboards, and tubes. A good Hammock? Gotta have the toys and leisure “stuff”. Maybe ask friends and family to cut grass, pull weeds and do other “odd jobs” as part of the invite. If they stop showing up, you’ll know it’s not fun for them anymore. Maybe cut back

on their chores. A lot to consider perhaps but when you boil it down it really is just a matter of being well informed with good information and good planning; financial and otherwise. A cottage can help you escape the stresses of your busy day-to-day life, provide quality time with family, friends and offer an opportunity to be active (or not active) while breathing and benefiting from some clean, fresh air. I can help

guide you through the borrowing side of things & get you into a cottage. Catching the fish, relaxing and having fun…that’s on you. Have a fun and safe summer.
