Picture perfect weekend for 182nd Fair BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Tractors, horses, Canadian country legend Carroll Baker, smashed up cars, amusement rides and, for the first time ever a llama, all combined to make the 182nd Napanee Fair a huge hit. Aside from a bit of rain on Friday, conditions were ideal for all five days and it translated into large crowds throughout

the Civic holiday weekend. “The weather made our fair, it was just perfect,” said fair president Dave McNichols. “Last year it was so gosh darn hot, if you were sitting in an air conditioned house, you weren’t going to come out.” Gate numbers were still being calculated, but McNichols was confident is was a huge jump compared to the previous year. “We had great crowds,” he said. “We tried a few new things, one of them was the lawn mower races and they were a very big

Tee said the market should be busy with even more vendors due to the popular event. Last year donations were accepted at the corn roast and, with it being so popular, Tee said the town plans to accept donations again this year. “We’re collecting nonperishable food items for the Salvation Army Food Bank and Morning Star Mission and we will also

be collecting monetary donations for the Rotary Club of Napanee for the aquatics fund,” commented Tee. “Last year was the first year we started asking for donations and it went pretty well so we’re hoping to either meet that or exceed the donations we received last year. Last year we raised about $145 in monetary donations and then we had two goodsized bins full of non-perishable food items.” The money donated to the Rotary Club will go toward a new pool in Napanee. The market itself runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Greater Napanee FireFit team member and firefighter Joe Reid carries a life-sized training dummy during competition.

Greater Napanee FireFit Team sets sights on Ingersoll meet BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

R0 012245873

So gruelling are FireFit Championships that paramedic units are standing by to administer oxygen to its participants, many of who collapse upon completion. Challenging as it may be, firefighters from across Ontario, including five from Greater Napanee Fire Services, have volunteered to run the course this weekend in Ingersoll. In an effort to prepare for the excruciating course, Napanee’s team members have been training three days a week for the last few of months. “It’s not just about being in good shape,” said Kevin Duncan, fire prevention officer with GNFS and FireFit team member. “You have to be training for the competition. The events are specific to FireFit. You can be in tremendous shape and work out at the gym and everything else, but if you come to do FireFit you’ll use different actions and different muscles than you’re used to using.” Included in the course is a six-story stair climb, fire hose drag, simulated door smash, sprinting and dragging a 175pound dummy named Randy. All of that is done in full fire gear, which weighs more than 80 pounds. “It’s designed to simulate everything we would do in a worst-case scenario but all in a matter of two-and-a-half minutes,” said Duncan, “rather than spanning an hour with a break and having someone else do stuff. It’s extremely challenging.” Duncan is part of the relay team which

includes Joe Reid and Al Hatton while two others — George Chalk and Larry Punchard— will do the individual course. They’ll be representing the 75 full-time and volunteer members of the force, as well as the entire town of Greater Napanee. “The best part of it is going and then talking to 100 or 150 firefighters that are at the competition,” said Duncan. “They’re all there for the same reason. Everybody wants to challenge themselves. It’s not about a race against the other guy. It’s about a race against yourself. It’s an accomplishment just to finish.” While there is a lot of pride on the line, it’s also a very serious competition. Those that do enter have to be fully committed and train vigorously. “It’s one of the few competitions that when you’re finished, you’re finished,” said Duncan. “You’re exhausted, you fall down and you have difficulty standing up… I’m yet to be at a competition where an ambulance didn’t take someone away.” Duncan says the only way to get through it is with the support of the family and the town. Families have to let the participants commit to training several nights a week. Without that support, it would be nearly impossible to go through it. Though they do represent the town when they compete, they do so without any financial support from the taxpayer. Their trips are covered by fundraising or out of their own pocket. All they ask in return is moral support as they push their bodies to the limit, honing their skills that may one day save a life.

BIA brings back Movie Night Epic screens downtown Aug. 30 BY ASHLEY FOLEY Staff Reporter

Adam Prudhomme-Staff

Kids and their parents were treated to a science lesson in Conservation Park on Monday, as Sciensational Snakes dropped by with some reptilian friends. Mike Veltri shows off a black rat snake, a local endangered species. The day was hosted by Quinte Conservation.

The Napanee Business Improvement Area is hosting a back-to-school outdoor movie night in downtown Napanee later this month and is asking businesses to keep their doors open until 8 p.m. to help make it a success. On Aug. 30 John and Centre Streets will be closed to show the movie Epic at 8 p.m. The event will also feature live entertainment leading up to the free movie and late downtown shopping. “We’re going to have some live entertainment before the movie starts and we’re asking all downtown businesses to stay open until 8 p.m., that way we can take advantage of the crowd coming in,” said Tom Coke, Napanee BIA manager. “The overall theme is a back-toschool kind of celebration.”

FALL REGISTRATION

Keeping businesses open later will help encourage more people downtown and help support the theme, explained Coke. Last year two movie nights were held, which Coke said brought many people to downtown Napanee. “We’re just looking to build on the successes of the movie nights a year ago and to continue it on from here on out,” he said, hoping downtown outdoor movie nights will become an annual summer event. The movie Epic is an animated movie based on a teenager who is transported to another land who finds herself in the middle of a battle between good and evil. Businesses wishing to advertise at the event must submit an ad to the BIA by Aug. 10. These ads will be shown on the movie screen between 6 and 8 p.m., while local entertainers perform.

Tough being at the top Following a series of by-elections last Thursday in Ontario, the Liberal government found itself with three fewer MPPs than it had before Thursday. When the dust settled on five mid-term contests — created by the resignation of five Liberal MPPs, including former Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty — two were retained by the governing Liberals, two went to the NDP and one went to the Progressive Conservatives. Panic time for the Liberals, right? Well, to be sure, it probably is (and should be). However, it’s a minor (at this point) revolt on the part of discontented PC members to remove and replace PC leader Tim Hudak that’s making the headlines this week. Certainly, the Tories must have been hoping for better than the pickup of a single seat (which was won by former Toronto Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday in Etobicoke-Lakeshore). Despite that, news of grassroots grumbling was surprising. Hudak has only been in charge of the party for three years. His party made gains in the 2011 election against the McGuinty-led Liberals, although he did fall short of returning his party to power. There was no shame in that, though — McGuinty is a formidable opponent, and connecting with voters as a rookie leader (as McGuinty’s own story shows) is no easy task. Clearly, however, at least some in the party were expecting better in these by-elections, something to show them they’re poised to finally unseat the Liberals in the looming provincial election (which could come as soon as this fall). One out of five, apparently, wasn’t progress enough. So, some London-area PCs are formally urging the party to hold a leadership review. Even if we agree that Hudak, to borrow a phrase from somewhere, isn’t ‘up to the job’ — and we don’t really agree with that assessment at all — from a purely logistical standpoint, it’d be folly for the PCs to change leaders now. First, it would force the PCs to undergo a complete change of approach. For the past several months, the PCs have argued that there needs to be a general election now. They even chastised the NDP for propping up the Liberals during the latest budget. Are the PCs now going to go into standby mode as we wait for them to choose a new leader? Given the urgency the PCs have placed on having an election — the province’s future was at stake, they said — a timeout would be politically difficult. Second, there isn’t really an immediately-apparent alternative to Hudak waiting in the wings. While there are plenty of capable MPPs out there, but none lead us to suggest that they’d be any better than the guy they’ve got right now. For the PCs, now’s the time to take a closer look at other changes they can make other than jettisoning their leader. Perhaps the policies and proposals they have on offer were nonstarters with voters in four of the five ridings where their candidates lost. Even if a new leader isn’t what the party needs, some introspection is in order. After all, the PCs don’t just have to defeat the Liberals — the NDP, who picked up a pair of seats, aren’t wringing their hands over the future of their leader. The PCs have to compete with the NDP as the right alternative to the governing Liberals. Adjusting the course of the party is one thing; changing the captain mid-stream, however, seems like a recipe for disaster.

Don’t leave food out of health discussion When Canada’s 13 provincial and territorial premiers gathered in Ontario last month to talk about collaborative savings on healthcare, they left an important ingredient off the table – food. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture fully supports the premiers’ concern with rising healthcare costs and their push for more affordable pharmaceutical products, but we respectfully propose an additional solution: preventative health care, through safe, affordable healthy food choices. When our political leaders chose to address health care issues at the pharmaceutical level, they chose to treat the symptoms and not the disease. They missed the opportu-

Looking ahead with Flash Forward L&A Public Libraries Staff Picks: Flash Forward by Robert J Sawyer, suggested by Julie Wendland, Reference Assistant. Imagine if you could see yourself in the future. Would you change what you are doing in the present to change what you are in the future? Is there such a thing as free will or is it destiny that shapes the future? This Coles’ Notes is just a couple of the questions that are being asked in Robert J. Sawyer’s Flash Forward. After a scientific experiment goes wrong and people all over the world go to sleep for a few moments in which most see what their lives and the world will be like in 20 years, what they see will transform many of them for better or worse. It is an interesting premise as people try to use the knowledge of the future to change the future. Stock markets go crazy with people investing or not investing and people wanting to find out the winning lottery numbers are just some of the examples. There are also the tragic elements of people who find they are not going to be a successful as they had hoped, so end up killing themselves. This is a page-turning book, as the reader will want to find out the outcomes of the main characters. This book was written in 1999 and it is interesting that some of the predictions that Sawyer makes about the future are actually true today. This book is perfect for a person just starting to delve into the world of science fiction. Flash Forward can be reserved at your nearest branch of the County of Lennox & Addington Public WENDLAND Libraries.

Former leaders looking for answers On Dec. 18, 2012, a motion was made by the Lennox and Addington 4-H board that all 4-H clubs must have transparency in financial accounts. All banking would be handled through the L&A 4-H Association bank account. Any funds currently in club accounts or in their petty cash must be turned over to the association by Dec. 31, 2012, along with complete 2012 financial records. In the future, all revenues must be sub-

mitted intact and expenses will be paid by the association’s treasurer. Each club’s finances will be held in trust and can be issued to them at a board meeting with a written request. Non-compliance results in forfeiting the ability to act as an L&A County 4-H volunteer or board member. A vote was taken and all were in favour. Carried. As 4-H beef club leaders, we met

all these requirements, but the L&A board did not accept it. We were dismissed from the board, and can no longer volunteer in L&A. We have done everything we can to resolve this matter, but no one will talk to us. Our daughter had to go to another county to join a 4-H club. No one will talk to us from L&A 4-H and 4-H Ontario will do nothing. Leonard and Betty Austin, Selby

on a proposed Local Food Act this fall. While the act doesn’t align food and health as explicitly as the National Food Strategy, it would recognize local food production as a priority for Ontario, and make support for local agriculture a matter of provincial policy. Many Canadian health care issues can be addressed at the source: the food choices we make, three times a day. Ontario farmers are ready to do

our part to contribute local smart food choices to a growing customer base. And with the framework of the National Food Strategy, and a meaningful Local Food Act in place, we’ll be empowered by more solid markets that celebrate the health and economic benefits of food that support our local economy.

Likewise, it is in the interests of all the provinces — and premiers — to ensure consumers always have access to safe, nutritious and affordable food. We must also establish strong collaboration between the food industry and health sector to ensure healthy food choices are available. To further the food agenda, Ontario’s legislature is expected to vote

However, it was my decision to omit them from the book, rather than the editors’ as including them would have dragged the book out too long. One of those scraps was my daily morning stroll with the flashlight out to the pasture field to bring in the cows for the morning milking. In the darkness there were mysterious sounds I could not, or preferred not, to identify. For the most part though, it was quiet out there in the pasture field as I fanned the flashlight back and forth, hoping to catch sight of the herd. Once on our way back to the barn, I paid more attention to the daybreak just beginning to faintly illuminate the distant horizon. That’s when I would see them. Tree swallows. Many thousands of them coming in my direction. As a fledgling birder, it would be several years before I understood where these swallows were coming from. I knew only that their journey seemed to end at the hydro wires that ran past our house. It was here where they eventually settled, their dark forms jostling for space, almost making the wires sag beneath their combined weight. The num-

bers continued to build up, extending far beyond what the eyes could detect. Surplus swallows fought for perches in one of our weeping willow trees near the lines and the tracery of branches would wave about propelled by the wind from their wings. Thousands, perhaps millions of swallows, would gather like this every morning, thinning out gradually through the autumn months as flocks no longer could contain their urge to migrate. The 620 I counted last week on the hydro wires that run past our house where we now live, only a kilometre from the old homestead, paled by comparison, but it did remind me of the vast flocks we once had back in the 1960s. I learned from what few books on birds that I had back then that the swallows had likely just lifted from the Big Island Marsh where they had spent the night. It took a while to accept this explanation as tree swallows during the nesting season have little to do with cattail marshes. However, come autumn, tree swallows view extensive marshlands as a safe haven in which to spend the night. Huff ’s Island Marsh was apparently another wetland where tree swallows would also bed down at night in the fall. In

Terry Sprague

Outdoor Rambles an e-mail received from a Belleville friend this week, he related an experience he had many years ago. “My neighbour for a while was 95 year old John Mitchell, the saxophonist of the Commodores Orchestra. We used to go to Picton for Fish and Chips and every time we passed the marsh on Hwy 62 he would tell about the tree swallows. His comment was the sky was black with birds and they would block out the sun for minutes at a time. He would always remark with sadness about the loss of birds which was pretty dramatic in his long lifetime.” So, what has happened since the 1960s to knock their numbers down like that? Like most

declines, likely it has been a combination of several factors, including habitat loss, loss of wetlands where they roost, changing agricultural practices, competition with other species for nest cavities and intense agricultural pesticide use which reduces their food source. I am sure most of us are inclined to believe that tree swallows occur only where there are nest boxes provided for them. However, the majority of tree swallows still use natural cavities, and these have been disappearing for the past 200 years as people cleared the land, managed woodlands, cut down older trees, and removed dead trees. Also, late spring snow storms. Remember the tragic sleet storm of April 11, 2003 that persisted for several days, resulting in 100 per cent mortality of thousands of early tree swallow migrants? The ground throughout the Quinte region was carpeted with dead swallows, and next boxes were jammed with 30 or more dead swallows as they tried to seek shelter, and then suffocated. Tree swallows have been declining at about one percent per year since 1966, according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey. They thrive on a high-insect diet, which through bioaccumulation can expose them to high levels of pesticides

and other contaminants such as PCBs and mercury. Amazingly, their numbers are still fairly stable, simply because their numbers were very high to start with historically. Tree swallows are a bit more forgiving when it comes to territorial requirements, although that is difficult to believe when you see tree swallows separated on a hydro wire by a polite eight inches, as though measured with extended wing tips. On our own two-acre lot in the 1970s, we routinely had up to 20 pairs occupying nest boxes annually. Today that number is down to three pair, although part of the reason can be attributed to less open space as our trees and shrubs have multiplied and matured. Tree swallows are likely safe for a little while. However, the day will come eventually when we will lose the tree swallow. That will be a sad day indeed, given their importance in insect control. To not have tree swallows in our backyard will be like losing the loons on our lakes and bays. For more information on today’s topic, please e-mail tsprague@kos.net or phone 613 476 5072. Guess At This ‘History Mystery’ L

O O K I N G

B

A C K

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 65 Years Ago August 11, 1948 n The Napanee Beaver reprinted an account of a trans-Atlantic flight written by the moderator of the United Church of Canada, Rev. A.J. Wilson. Rev. Wilson was bound for Europe to take part in a meeting of the World Council of Churches in Amsterdam. Rev. Wilson contrasted his trip with an Atlantic crossing by boat, which had been the typical mode of transportation for such a voyage before then. He described having “supper in Montreal, breakfast in Ireland and supper again in London.” He also said, “I am still pinching myself to see if it is true!” n Canadians learned that they would have a new prime minister. Louis St. Laurent, the current Minister of External Affairs, won the endorsement of the Liberal Party to succeed William Lyon Mackenzie King as leader of the party and as prime minister. He won the leadership on the first ballot at the recent convention of the Libberal Party of Canada. King had been Prime Minister for 22 years, the longest stretch in office being from 19351948.

35 Years Ago August 9, 1978 n Although the days of lumber mills had long since passed, at least one was still in operation. Local MP Douglas Alkenbrack officially cut the first log at the restored Bellrock Mill, located east of Enterprise. The mill, owned by the Napanee Region Conservation Authority, also had plans to restore the flour mill at the site. Alkenbrack, himself a former lumberman, said he recalled drawing a load of lumber from the same mill 30 years earlier. n Organizers of the 123rd annual Napanee Fair said they were overjoyed with the fact that the summertime tradition was not only popular, but apparently gaining in popularity. The fair board estimated that the event attracted 30 per cent more people than the previous year, with some 14,300 coming to the fairgrounds for at least part of the fair. As always, attractions like the livestock shows and the midway proved to be favourites, as was the baby show and the annual Fair Queen pageant. Yvonne Thompson of RR6 Napanee took home the crown.

The midway point of summer

Sex and Food If you are in the habit of sleeping with your window open and happen to have a bedroom that opens onto your garden, you may have noticed that there is quite a racket out there these nights. Crickets are cricking, moths are bouncing into night lights, toads are croaking, and if you look carefully against a clear sky you may notice that bats are flying up and down the open spaces between mature trees, foraging the insect corridors of your neighbourhood. Do not be afraid of them: they are our friends. All of this is to say that there is a lot of activity going on in your yard that

relates to the culinary interests of myriad insects and vermin. There is, in fact, a lot more activity of the sexual variety. A plant flowers, I remind you, in an effort to attract pollinators. Night and day pollinators do their work in an effort to sustain the hive or their own stomachs, but flowers are only interested in procreation: the development of seeds and their scatter is all that a plant really wants to do. As for the insects themselves, one makes love with a full tummy and a sip or two of fresh water. An abundant buffet is a prerequisite to having kids. What is the point of bringing progeny into a world of famine? Insects deserve more credit for figuring out such things. Work What gardeners busied themselves with from April through July is now done. If you didn’t plant, sow, or weed before this, there is not much point in getting at it now, unless you are starting a new landscape altogether. I am talking about the established garden that

should be flowering to beat the band and the vegetable garden that is on the threshold of producing the best crop of food ever. While my rhubarb, asparagus,

Mark Cullen The Green File strawberry, raspberry, and cherry days are behind me for this year, I still have my tomatoes and apples to look forward to. Not to mention peppers, potatoes, Swiss Chard and all of the cucurbits like squash and cucumbers, and list goes on. Question of the Week Q/ I have grown impatiens in my gardens for years. For the last 3 years, my plants start to die back at the end of July. They look great one day and terrible the next. Can you tell me what I’m doing wrong?

Pictures Perhaps the greatest opportunity of all this time of year is to record your garden at its peak while you have the chance. The magic of digital photography allows us to shoot flowers in bloom, insects on the prowl, and even hummingbirds on the feeder with abandon. What you do with all of the ‘extra’ photos that you will never use is your business, but the keepers are worth

saving, if for no other reason than to use as wallpaper on your computer screen. Come mid winter you will be grateful that you did. With the snow piled high around your compost bin and the sound of mating insects a distant and silent memory, you will remember these days fondly and with longing. Breath deep, absorb, take in the scent and sounds of a very active garden: we have turned the corner. Welcome to the other side.

or vegetables. A pepper plant that is harvested regularly produces more peppers. This is true also for beans, peas, tomatoes and, well, you get the idea. This is also the time of year when you should dig up your garlic, lay the exposed bulbs in the sun for a few days to ‘cure’ and develop a tough outside shell. Then hang them in a well-ventilated room but out of direct sunlight until you are ready to use them. If you did not plant garlic and wish that you had, it is instructive to note that the whole process is counterintuitive. Plant garlic cloves in October; harvest the pigtailed scapes in July and the bulbs now. There is no other food plant in the garden that subscribes to this cycle. A good reason to pay attention while attending your local horticulture club meetings.

Heavy morning dew and cooler evening temperatures help the germination of grass seed. That is the reason why most golf courses and sod growers sow grass seed between mid August and late September. The changing of the season, as imperceptible as it is to the layman in early August, places new demands on the gardener. Our attention is turned from mulching and weekly weeding to hand watering in hot weather. From sowing to harvest. Better to pull your radishes as they become ripe than to leave them in the ground to flower and for the roots to go woody. This is true for all of the ‘fruit’-bearing crops in your garden, regardless of whether they are fruits

R0012245182

It is early August which is quite likely the most important time on the gardening calendar. This week marks the peak performance of your garden. From this week forward, through the fading days of autumn, your garden will be in decline. While there are some fabulous early spring flowering plants that you have enjoyed and other plants that bloom best in October that are ahead of you, many vegetable and fruit crops are yet to reach the crescendo of their ripeness. The best of their season lies before us. We are standing on the Continental Divide of the gardening season: on your right is the past four months where planting is history. On your left is the next four months. Your job is to manage the flow of the season in your favour. Where sowing seeds, planting, and weed control dominated your thoughts and actions previously, things are now about to change dramatically. Fact is, the real productivity in your garden lies ahead of you.

For years, Peter and Jane Good have opened their gardens up each Sunday in August for people to pick their own bouquets to take home, while also providing a space to teach about hospice. This year, they have redoubled their efforts in the hopes of making what they do spread across the country. Jane said for the past eight years or so, people have been telling her how much they enjoy her gardens and learning about hospice. This year the Goods decided to make it possible for others to start their own gardenbased initiatives. Information for getting started can be found on their website, www.gardeningandgiving.ca. Jane said projects could be anything, ranging from a backyard tea party to an open garden such as hers. A local hospice group can provide pamphlets and information, while the Goods’ website can direct people in how to get started. “As word spreads about the possibility of people doing this, it’s not a difficult concept to get. I think it will grow even more, we’re really hopeful,” said Jane. The Goods’ goal is to raise awareness first and foremost, and raise money for Kingston and Lennox and Addington Hospices. “It’s not about the money. We’re very happy if people contribute but we want to make hospice information accessible to everyone and we want to make the gardening experience something that anyone can appreciate it and money isn’t a limiting factor. “So if people come, if they want to donate that’s fine, if they’re not in the position to do that right now, that’s fine too. All are welcome. It’s about growing awareness of hospice more than it is about fundraising; it’s awareness building,” said Jane. The open garden concept

Submitted

Peter and Jane Good at their garden near Camden East. is meant to be relaxing and bring people together. “It’s a pleasant space for gardeners and non-gardeners alike. It’s the opportunity to put hospice in the ‘gardening and giving’ loop. It’s simple, it’s pleasant and it’s fun,” said Jane. Jane and Peter encourage people not to be shy when picking flowers in their gardens, because the more flowers that are picked from their annual gardens, the more that will grow back. “Many feel like a kid in a candy store. In our culture, we’re not often encouraged to cut flowers so we find that they thing, ‘oh I shouldn’t take so many’ and we keep saying, ‘please take more,’” said Jane. “The more people cut flowers, the more they take away the possibility of seeding so then the plant goes into overdrive and produces more blossoms. So it’s actually to our advantage to have people cut flowers because in that big garden, the more you cut the more we get.” While some come to pick flowers, others come to visit and enjoy the landscaping on the Goods’ prop-

erty. Jane described one family that met each week at the Goods’ home to pick flowers and visit. “They looked around the garden and they picked a few flowers, but really they just put their chairs in the shade and they sat and visited together. The next week they came back, same time, and they basically said, ‘this is our time to be with one another.’ I thought that was pretty lovely,” said Jane. Last Sunday was the first open gardening day of the year and Jane said there were many new faces in the Goods’ gardens, exploring all 44 rows of flowers and herbs. “It was wonderful. Lots and lots of new visitors to the garden. We find that many return every couple years, some every year. This year, there were lots of new people,” she said. The gardens open at 2 p.m. each Sunday in August and remain open until dusk. Jane and Peter bake rosemary shortbread for the afternoon and allow for people to explore their gardens, ponds and wander their property. They are located just outside of Camden East, at 393 Bethel Rd.

What do you need to ask before choosing a Realtor? T H E

Thursday, August 8, 2013 When it comes to choosing a professional real estate team – from a Realtor to a lawyer and home inspector, what do you need to know before selecting who you are going to work with? While there are a number of variables – if you’ve worked with the individual before, if they come referred by someone you trust and how much time you have to spend interviewing – there are some questions that you should ask before making any decisions, says Phil Dorner, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association. “For starters, there are over 55,000 Realtors in Ontario

so narrowing down your search can be a challenge! Look for someone whose knowledge and expertise best suit your needs by doing your research first and asking lots of questions,” says Dorner. Here are some specific questions to ask Realtors, lawyers and home inspectors, courtesy of the Ontario Real Estate Association:

What to ask a Realtor: • Registered in Ontario and a member of a real estate board? • Credentials, background and references? • Years of experience and

Jr. Express rolling at Nationals Napanee’s offense clicking in Owen Sound

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Adam Prudhomme-Staff

The Napanee Boyer GM Express are set to welcome Ontario’s top teams this weekend for provincials, held at the Napanee Fairgrounds.

Express to host squirt provincials Top teams to do battle in Napanee this weekend

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

f the Napanee Boyer GM Squirt Express can shore up their Achilles heel and avoid a big inning, they might surprise some teams at this weekend’s provincials, held at the Fairgrounds. They’ll welcome 10 of the province’s top squirt clubs to their home diamond for a double knockout tournament. At stake is the provincial crown. “All season long it’s been the same thing, that one inning that kills us,” said Express coach Jody Sudds. “Every game that we play we’re right in it.

I

It’s a 2-1, 3-2 game, then they’ll put up five runs and it's game over. For the most part we hang in there pretty well against anyone we play against.” From the circle they’ll rely on Emmet Pierce and Austin Sutcliffe to shut down the opposition. Both have been throwing well of late and the bats have been backing them with support. It’s the defense behind them that can at times be the team’s undoing. Chad Cousins, Zac McMahon, Alex Li, Dakota Pearson, Walker Lyons, Hunter Bannon, Jacob Martin, Owen Lambert and mite call ups Caden Holmes and Conner Brooks

make up the home team. Along with Sudds, the coaching staff consists of Fred Sutcliffe and Cliff Sudds. Derek Li has graciously volunteered to serve as bat boy. Belmore, fresh off wins at a Stratford tournament and the provincial qualifier, enters as the early favourite. They figure to be a tough team for anyone unlucky enough to draw them. Cobourg, Port Perry, Springbrook, Innerkip, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hepworth, Tavistock, Belleville, Niagara on the Lake and Port Perry round out the rest of the tournament field.

Napanee Express squirt girls clinch spot in ‘B’ side finals Team sees contributions up and down the line up

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

hough they jumped out to an 8-0 lead, the Napanee Squirt Girls Express still fell one run shy of finishing on the ‘A’ side of this weekend’s PWSA Qualifiers in Halton Hills. Napanee’s cushy lead didn’t hold up over seven innings, eventually losing 10-9 to the Mississauga Tigers to end their tournament run. The Express made a run at clinching an ‘A’ side finish, reeling off 20-0, 9-4 and 11-2 wins over Aurora, Whitby and Vaughan

T

respectively before Sunday’s loss to the Tigers. Napanee was also a run shy in their first game, falling 8-7 to Brampton. That game started Friday but was suspended due to rain after the top half of the first with Brampton up 2-0. The Napanee girls were able to rally to make it close but couldn’t complete the comeback. With their finish the Express will now play as one of eight ‘B’ side teams in the Grand Championships in Cobourg Aug. 16-18. The qualifier was used to seed teams across the province into the A, B or C division.

All weekend long the girls showed they aren’t far from being an ‘A’ team, showing few weaknesses. The entire roster contributed, making for a balanced attack. They had some of the top teams looking a little nervous with their relentless style of play. Coached by John Hearns, the Express is made up of Gracie Hearns, Megan Morrow, Kylie Morrow, Amber Weese, Maddie Brant, Lauren Kennedy, Rachel Foster, Brianna Anderson, Jada Celestini, Seanna Brooks, Sydney South, Hanna Gregory and Erin Joe.

Cruising along on their way to a 4-0 start to Nationals in Owen Sound, the Napanee Express Juniors hit a wall in the sixth inning of their match against Wiarton. Napanee coughed up six runs in the that inning, suffering their only loss through two days of tournament play. Cole Bolton knocked in Napanee’s only run of the game, giving them a brief 1-0 lead in the fifth. As it turned out it wasn’t enough as relief pitcher Greg Hammell surrendered six runs in the sixth, though only four were earned. Napanee kicked the ball around to the tune of six errors. That one inning aside, Napanee has distinguished themselves as early contenders in the week long tournament, pounding out 9-0, 6-1 and 3-0 wins over Saskatoon, Irma (Alberta) and Kelly’s Pub (Newfoundland). The Irma Tigers have long been a thorn in Napanee’s side at the tournament. A win over their long time rivals could give them the boost of confidence they need to make a strong push this weekend. Outfielder Curtis Leonard paced the offense through the first four games, cranking out six hits in 15 at bats, two of which left the yard. His six RBI were also tops on the team. Catcher Craig Lyons was an even .500 (4-8) while Mike Jordan and Barry Hogeboom were also even, collecting two hits in four official at-bats. Sloan Creighton drove in four runs. From the pitcher’s cir-

Mike Jordan and the Napanee Express Juniors have been scoring runs in bunches at Nationals, jumping out to a 3-1 record through Tuesday. cler the starters had been nearly flawless, allowing just five earned runs through the first 25 innings. Hammell is the only one to allow any damage, giving up the five runs over 10.2 innings pitched. Braden Scott struck out six in his three innings of work, Bolton 10 in seven and Brandon Sands four over 4.1. Napanee was back in action yesterday afternoon against the Stratford Cubs. Results weren’t known at presstime. They were scheduled to take on the host Keady Jets at 6:30 p.m. last night.

Their next game is set for this afternoon against Calahoo at 4 p.m. They wrap up round robin play this evening against Saskatoon’s first entry, the Diamondbacks, at 8:30 p.m. The playoffs get underway Friday and close out on Sunday. Through the first two days Napanee sat tied for second with the Diamondbacks and Kelly's Pub at 31. Only Wiarton was undefeated at 4-0. late charge in the final two rounds of the Canadian Junior Boys Championship allowed golfer Josh Whalen to do some serious leapfrogging on Friday, climbing into a tie for fifth. Whalen, who plays out of the Napanee Golf and Country Club, shot 68 on the final day to finish with 285 on the four day tournament, held in Sudbury. He finished three under over-

A

all, nine shots back of first place Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows, BC. Whalen needed two great rounds to right himself after a rough start to the tournament. He opened with a 71 and 79, leaving him just 18 holes to try and erase his earlier mistakes. He was able to make up some ground with more consistent play on Thursday and Friday, making birdies on five of his last 12 holes. Bath’s Austin James

was also at the tournament, finishing tied for 36th overall. He was in contention after the first round, shooting 67 to finish the day just three back of the eventual champion. Unfortunately for James he couldn’t maintain the pace, posting rounds of 75, 76 and 79. He couldn’t right the ship and wound up seven over for the tournament. For Kwon, it was his second Junior title in the last three years.

This weekend’s tournament will mark the last of a busy season for Softball Napanee. Earlier this summer they hosted midget qualifiers and a novice girls qualifier. The Boyer GM Squirts will look to become the only Napanee team to win a tournament they’ve hosted this year. In loving memory of a husband, father, grandfather and father-in-law who went to be with the Lord August 10, 2007. If he could have spoken before he died, These are the words he would have replied: “This life for me has truly passed, I loved you all to the very last, Weep not for me, but courage take And love each other for my sake.” Always loved and forever in our hearts. God took him Home, it was His will, But in our hearts we love him still, His memory is as dear today As in the hour he passed away, We often sit and think of him When we are all alone, For memory is the only friend That grief can call its own.

YARD AND GARAGE SALE CLEAN OUT YOUR GARAGE AND TURN THE ITEMS YOU’VE FORGOTTEN INTO CASH.

In the comfort of her own home and with family by her side, Vera left us to be with her maker and her beloved husband Jim, after an unbelievable and courageous battle with a very ugly disease. She and her sweetheart Jim are together again for all eternity along with her parents Wendell and Clara, her brother Wendell and in-laws, Jack, Ethel, Mike, Bert and Phil and niece Rebecca. Born in Dryden, Ontario, Vera was the fourth child in a family of six. She leaves behind three sisters whom along with her, were affectionately known as “The Ugly Stepsisters”. Elsie, Doreen (Steve) and Hazel (Bert) will miss her immensely as well as her “little brother” Herb (Lynne). She will also be greatly missed by her sister-in-law Janet (Phil) and brother-in-law Ron (Mary). Vera and Jim were married on February 14, 1953 aboard the H.M.C.S. Magnificent in Halifax Harbour. This is where she began her inspection of maternity wards across the provinces as she gave birth to her five children in five different hospitals. They moved to Moscow in 1959 and there they put down roots. She leaves behind 5 loving children that she raised to posses good values, creativity and generous hearts. Sad beyond words to say good-bye to their precious mom are Corrie (Brenda), Julie (Brad), Susan (Ron), Krista (Jim) and Quentin (Kelly). Their lives are forever changed but they will carry on with their love for each other and the legacy of an inherited wonderful sense of humour. Those 5 children have given Vera 13 grandchildren, Joel, Robin, Jaime, Jordan, Kristin, Emily, Jacob, Randi, Sean, Adam, Harrison, Isaac and Peyton and 3 great-grandchildren, Kylie, Melodie and Lukah, all whose lives have been enriched by the love of their Grandma Vera from near and far, also saddened by this loss are Vera’s many nieces and nephews who too were blessed by her great sense of fun. Vera was a skilled tailor and ‘crafty’ lady and all of us are left with many treasures fashioned by her own hand over the years to remember her by such as suits, coats, fleece jammies, silk pigs, grocery bags, maple leaf placemats, bottled ropes and so much more. Happily her many tall tales have been encapsulated in a book, ‘Grandma Vera’s Bedtime Stories’. Vera was a very humble and gracious lady who loved her family and friends unconditionally and who worked tirelesly in support of Moscow United Church and her community. She was a member of the Women’s Institute and the United Church Women since 1960. She is fondly remembered for her quick wit and silly escapades including costumes, props and poems which continued in spite of the battle she was fighting. The family would like to thank the staff at Kingston General Hospital, Lennox and Addington Hospital in Napanee and the incredible homecare providers from CCAC, St. Elizabeth Health Care and Paramed, without whom we would not have been able to fulfill her wish to be at home. A special thank you to Carol, Janie, Karen, Donna and Suzanne. Our heartfelt gratitude also to the entire Moscow community for their endless caring and support. Family will receive friends and neighbours at Moscow United Church on Friday, August 9th from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. A W.I. traditional Service will be performed on Friday, August 9th at 6:30pm prior to visitation. A Funeral Service and Celebration of a life well lived will be held on Saturday, August 10th at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Moscow United Church or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements can be made through Paul G. Payne Funeral Home in Odessa, Ontario (613386-7373).

In his 66th year, in Kingston General Hospital of ALS on July 1, 2013. Peter leaves to mourn his wife of 44 years, Margaret Marion (nee MacLachlan). We vowed that only death would part us and now it has. However no matter how powerful death is we believe that the grips of sin have been broken, the sting of death is removed, the victory of the grave has been defeated by God’s Resurrection power in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ. He it is Who will clothe the perishable with the imperishable and the mortal with the immortal (taken from 1 Corinthians Chapter 15). Peter retired as a sergeant after 30 years in the R.C.M.P. He and his family lived in various areas of Canada before he and Margaret settled until recently in Napanee. He was known to reflect the ‘old school’ and perfectionism but with humour and compassion. He also leaves his much loved children, Stephen (Teresa), Tess Nordlund (Christopher), David, Robert (Crystal) and Shyanne. His dear grandchildren, Ashley, Emily, Justin, Shawn, Hannah and Madison. His siblings, Ronald (Nancy), Roseanne Stevens (Paul), Tomas (Darlene) and Roger (Joanie). He was predeceased by his parents Rosario and Ivy and sister Cecily. He had many nieces and nephews that he had loving interest for and friends that he kept through his travels. Until we meet again, dear one. The family received friends at the Wartman Funeral Home “Napanee Chapel” on Saturday, July 6, 2013 from 9:30am to 11am. Funeral Service was held at 11am in the Chapel. Reception followed in the Reception Centre. In his honour, donations may be made by cheque to the charity of your choice. Two locations to serve you.

Library becoming town community hub Facility is proving to be a popular spot with new young families, says Mayor BY ASHLEY FOLEY Staff Reporter

ITH more young families moving to Deseronto, Mayor Norman Clark said the library has grown into a community place for children, parents and adults. It’s used for research, job search, childrens’ programs, concerts and even exercise classes — and Clark said more programs should be offered in the future. “The library, over the years it’s become the central point in Deseronto. There’s a lot of activity in the library and a lot of groups use the library,” said Clark, who is also on the library board. “There’s a lot of new people in town, especially young people, young people with young kids, and what we’re trying to do is encourage as many of them as possible to come to the library with their kids… I think there’s a lot of young couples in town that don’t really know much about the library so we’re hoping that we can draw them in to the library just to look around,” he said. The library is in partnership with the Community Centre to offer children day camp programs through the summer, which includes time at the library to do crafts and listen to stories. “Every week we come down on Monday and the library does crafts with us and there’s a story time done by John Ross (a local story teller.) He’s very creative. Every Wednesday,

the library also hosts fitness in the park, where they have a local personal trainer come down and the kids really enjoy being active,” said Breanna Webb, day camp counselor. “I honestly didn’t think that a lot of the kids would want to come to the library but they certainly enjoy it. They’ll sit down and read books for hours,” she said. Frances Smith, Chief Executive Officer/librarian, said there are a number of successful programs but those involving kids are especially popular. “We just basically try to promote literacy and we see how many books we can read,” said Smith. Beyond reading, the library offers a number of social programs. Three times a week a free exer-

cise program is offered in the library. “It’s probably our mainused building in Deseronto for events. We even have concerts here and we’re looking at a Christmas concert, depending on the number of people that comes out to it,” said Clark. Clark said even though the library’s budget was decreased by about half, the library is still gaining momentum in the community. “Every year the library puts in their budget to buy new books and so on. This year we had to cut the budget pretty much in half. Normally we give $7,000 for new books and now it’s cut way down,” he said. Hopeful the library will continue to grow, Clark said the library hopes to

offer quilting classes and also expand the building in the future to accommodate all the programs offered. “The board is always looking for ways to improve the library, improve things with the library and do things for all of the people, not just the small kids but for the seniors as well,” said Clark. Other services and programs include computer use, archivist research and information, puppet shows, concerts by the Gananoque Live Theatre, job search services available through Lennox and Addington County, and programs for nearby schools. The library is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The Deseronto Lions Hall was sold last month, with the deal set to close in October. The Town of Deseronto is offering space to organizations that use to hall in order to ensure programs are not discontinued due to the sale of the building. “It’s just an underutilized facility so we’re trying to limit the amount of buildings that we have so if someone else can make better use of it and the community can get better use out of the facility, then that’s our motivation for selling the property,” said Bryan Brooks, Town of Deseronto clerk. He said the facility was “deemed surplus by the municipality” since the Community Centre has a boardroom and space to run programs. Selling this building will mean other buildings will be used more efficiently, while the Lions Hall can be utilized by another company to better serve the community. “We had very (few) groups using it. The Food Bank was using it as well as the Community Care group, but we’re looking to offer them alternative locations inside facilities that we have,” said Brooks. “The Napanee and Area Community Health Centre has signed an agreement with the purchaser since they’re the only permanent tenant, the only other ones are the odd day rentals so we’ve offered our services to them in other locations… Our biggest concern is we don’t want people to think the programs are not going to run,” said Brooks. He said the Community Centre would be an ideal space for many organizations, such as Community Care, which offers programs to seniors, such as foot care and meals on wheels. Other programs and organizations, however, may choose to utilize other buildings that are still located in the core of the town. The facility should not close until October so Brooks said all programs will be honoured until then. One of the conditions of the sale was that the municipality agrees to rezone the facility to residential, so Brooks believes it may be turned into an apartment building but the buyers have not yet specified what the use will be. The building was purchased by a numbered company, which has not yet released its name.

Regional fishing tourney lures anglers BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

ITH thousands of lakes to choose from, organizers for the First Annual Lake O’ Lakes Fishing Tournament had a tough time settling on which lake would host their Aug. 17 event. In the end they whittled it down to five: Loughborough Lake, Kashwakamak Lake, Desert Lake,

Big Gull Lake and Sharbot Lake, all located in the Frontenacs. Starting at 7 a.m. and running through 4 p.m., anglers can fish any of those lakes for a chance at more than $20,000 worth of prizes. “I’ve never heard of anything like it, so it’s pretty neat,” said Ashley Rae, tournament co-ordinator and avid fisher in her own right, having entered several high profile events. “There are 5,000 lakes in

this region. It’s nice to have a tournament that showcases five different lakes plus the fact that there are so many lakes you can fish here.” The purpose of the tournament is to highlight not only the great fishing in the area, but the abundance of it. With several species of fish found in the area’s waterways, they’re region markets itself as a great place to spend a weekend just sitting in a

boat and casting lines. Each lake will be equipped with stations for participants to weigh up to four catches. Only bass will count. The heftiest fish from each lake will garner a prize: $500 for first, $250 for second and $100 for third. All catches are released after they’re weighed. Tickets to enter are $50, which includes a barbecue dinner after the event at Oso Beach in

Sharbot Lake. All prizes will be awarded then as well. “Even if you just want to support the event you can buy a ticket and have a chance at winning a boat motor trailer, fishing gear, resort accommodations, a helicopter tour and more,” said Rae. Early response has been better than expected,

with even a couple of outof-province anglers signing up to take part. The tournament is expected to draw over 1,000 people into the region. There’s no age limit, fishers of all skill level and experience are welcome. Registration forms can be found online at www.TravelLandOLakes.c om.

day afternoon with a smashing demolition derby. This year 49 drivers entered, first attempting to win best decorated vehicle before smashing them to oblivion. All told there were very few complaints or issues whatsoever, he said. To put on such a big event without any major hiccups took hours of behind the scenes work from countless volunteers. Now that the fair is in the books and the grounds have been tidied, it won’t be long before plans for the 183rd get underway. McNichols says the fair board will get together in a couple of weeks to discuss what worked and what didn’t.

“Our winner, (Napanee’s Lyle Smith) saw that somebody else was ahead of him,” said McNichols. “So he went out in the corn field on Sunday and came back with a corn that was 140 inches high, so he deserved to win.” They’re hoping to make the contest an annual event and encourage more corn growers to attempt to break the 140 inches mark next August. Just about everything else farm related was judged, be it hay, roots, vegetables or livestock. For the cattle show, this year marked the 75th year that Holstein Canada was at the Napanee Fair to award prizes to the top cows. “Fairs have to get back to their agricultural roots,”

said McNichols. “The ones that are competing with Canada’s Wonderland and the K-Rock Centre, that’s not what people come to the fair to see.” A big hit amongst families was the petting zoo which is where the llama could be found. As far as McNichols could tell after asking around, it was the first documented account of a llama being at the Napanee Fair in its 182 year history. On Saturday night Baker, a five-time Juno Award winner and member of the Order of Canada, sang to a packed grandstand. As with any Napanee Fair, it all wrapped up Mon-

L&A Dark Sky Area

Meteor shower should provide stellar night show Beaver Staff

While it’s no secret that Lennox and Addington’s dark skies are ideal for skywatching all year

round, this week the skies should promise more action than usual. The annual Perseid meteor shower will provide a nighttime ‘shooting star’

show, with the peak coming on Sunday and Monday nights — weather permitting. According to a press release issued by L&A

County, the meteor shower should provide an opportunity to glimpse a shooting star at least once during a 15-minute viewing period, although chances are you’ll

see more. At its ideal peak, 50 meteors per hour are possible. The brightest meteors can be brighter than even the brightest stars. The meteor show comes thanks to the dust trail of a passing comet. The Perseid meteors are small pieces of dust and ice that come from Comet Swift-Tuttle. Every year from early- to midAugust, Earth passes through a cloud of dust sputtered off the icy core of the comet as it orbits the sun. The meteors quickly incinerate as they collide with the Earth’s atmosphere at more than 50 times the speed of a rifle bullet. That violent collision provides the light show that many have come to enjoy every year in their backyard. One of the best local spots to watch the meteor shower is the L&A Dark Sky OPEN 11AM-5PM SEVEN DAYS A WEEK 613-373-1133

Viewing Area, located north of Erinsville, just off County Rd. 41 near the Sheffield Conservation Area. The L&A Dark Sky Viewing Area is the most southerly point in Ontario where the night sky is so pristine, offering a night sky experience very similar to what was available more than 100 years ago. The site includes a large concrete pad for camera or telescope setup, or placement of lawn chairs for general stargazing. While the L&A Dark Sky Viewing Area is ideal for both professional and amateur astronomers and astrophotographers, it is designed for anyone wishing to observe the natural wonder of the stars. For the meteor shower, no advanced equipment is required, other than a comfortable lawn chair. 9261 LOYALIST PARKWAY, ADOLPHUSTOWN, ONTARIO
