Fair board prez pleased with turnout First-time events and old favourites prove to be popular at 181st fair

By Seth DuChene EDITOR As the 181st Napanee Fair drew to a close on Monday, Lennox Agricultural Society President Bill Lazier said he thought the annual fiveday event was a success. While the president said he still had to meet with his fellow fair board members to review and reflect, he said he was under the

impression that attendance was as good or better than last year’s fair. He also said that some precipitation over the weekend — a rarity during this dry summer — didn’t have too negative an impact on numbers. “It rained a little bit on Sunday, but attendance was good,” he said. Lazier said that some of the new attractions at this year's fair proved to be popular. “Thursday night, we had the Battle of the

Bands, and we had a good crowd for it,” he said. “We’ve had lots of good response from the rare breeds show that came in this year. There were lots of people talking about it.” Events such as the horse pull and tractor pull were “excellent” as well, with large crowds taking in the action, said Lazier. The miniature horse show and western games also proved to be popular. “The 4-H had a talent show,

and there were tons of people there,” Lazier added. Overall, Lazier said he was pleased with the 4-H's contribution, which included project displays, a petting zoo and a children's play area. As always, the fair-ending demolition derby drew a huge crowd to the grandstand area. “We have an awesome crowd here today,” he said, looking out at the stands from the announcer’s booth. “It’s good.”

Decorating Q & AÊs by Your Local Paint & Paper Experts Isn’t it remarkable how unexpectedly our children can humble us and touch our very soul. In the big picture, we are so very small. But, we should never forget the great impact small things can have in a big picture.

SUMMER IS HERE COOKING JUST GOT EASIER WITH OUR DOUBLE XL DEAL

I have recently, once again, admired how my boys can find joyous delight in things that often adults pass right by without noticing. Each time this occurs, I try to live that moment as aware as they are of the present. Because far too often my mind is on what needs to be completed or figured out next and that frame of mind is an absolute waste of now! Sharing in a common delight of most young boys, Malcolm and Isaac have been excited to set up a tent in the backyard to sleep under the stars. Wouldn’t you know, the night we chose was last Tuesday evening and although badly needed, that rain storm just about prevented the beauty of the star gazing. A little bummed out, I contemplated tenting in the rain with the fly over the tent to keep us dry until Malcolm suggested setting the tent up in his room. Not quite what we had planned, but what a great idea. Not only will it be dry, the boys could enjoy sleeping alone without one of us tagging along to stop the fun sillies they share without Mom or Dad. Don’t kid yourself. My mattress is far more comfortable!

Tuck in time arrived, and to my astonishment there was more to Malcolm’s plan than I had understood. You see, he has a glow in the dark solar system on his ceiling, so he was never bummed out because star gazing was always an option. It just happened under the roof of our house!

We even have a truck class this year.” Elsie Dowdle will run both events that weekend. “With every single derby her name is usually attached because she’s fan-

tastic,” McCarney said. “She really gets the crowd going, is great at what she does and she knows the ropes. She knows the derbies and all the guys, so you’d be crazy not to hire Elsie.” The Jason Thorne Free Style Motocross team will be setting up and practicing on Saturday, with their main event scheduled for around noon on Sunday. The committee also got its feet wet when it comes to power boating recently, after the Town of Deseronto was added as a card stop for the Power Boating Canada Bay of Quinte Poker Run/Rendez-Vous on July 27-29. “We were added at the last minute as a card stop.

We were told on Friday night that on Saturday all the boats were stopping in Deseronto, even the big speed boats,” she said. “I counted 37 but there were a couple more boats that actually came right up to the dock in Deseronto at Centennial Park. It was really exciting.” The winners of that run, Pat and Gwen Bray — owners of Showtime Detailing in Belleville — will be showcasing their boat at AutoFest. “We haven’t tried having vendors for this kind of an event before, McCarney admitted, but said that

HETHER you have a show car, truck or motorcycle, an upcoming automotive festival in Deseronto is the place to showcase it. Organized by Dez Events, a non-profit committee, the AutoFest and Show & Shine Plus event will take place on Aug. 1819 at the bottom of Mill Street in Deseronto. The two-day event will also feature a demolition derby on each day and a freestyle motocross show on Sunday. According to chairperson Tina McCarney, the event is in addition to cruise nights that are currently held in town every Sunday.

“It’s for anybody and everybody who wants to come down,” she told the Beaver. “They can bring a vehicle in and we don’t care what make or model it is, if it’s a motorbike or car or truck, it makes no difference.” McCarney said it all started a few years ago when her committee applied for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride event. That application was for the annual waterfront festival but at the time the team was not visiting eastern Ontario. This time around she has a group of close friends and family helping out. “Nathan Fox is my right hand and we work together very well, plus we have a great group of vol-

Blaming the refs This past week at the Olympics has us wondering about officiating, and more specifically, how athletes and others respond to officiating when (in their view) officiating has been bad. Chances are, you’ve already guessed what sparked our reflection: the Canada-U.S. women’s semifinal soccer game on Monday, where the Canadians suffered a soul-crushing overtime loss, 4-3, to the powerful Americans. After the game, there was no shortage of criticism of the referee of the game, Christiana Pedersen of Norway, for calling a rarely enforced delay-of-game penalty against Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod, and for missing a crucial hand-ball by the Americans. Many in the media, along with most Canadians we’d wager, were left feeling the Canadian women’s team had been robbed. Including, not surprisingly, members of Team Canada. After the game, many of the players were outspoken in their criticism of the refereeing. Well, despite the outrage from the Canadians, the result

of Monday’s game is going to stand — the U.S. moved on to the gold medal game, while Canada was relegated to the bronze medal game. However, FIFA, soccer’s governing body, announced that it was investigating ‘certain incidents’ following the game — and, we can only conclude that they’re taking a look at the Canadian players’ comments. Luckily for the Canadians, FIFA opted to take pass on heaping more disappointment on the Canadian side. The fact that the Canadian players came under the FIFA microscope is outrageous to many. However, can players and coaches be allowed to spout off about refereeing after a game without fear of penalty? Seems to us, refs and officials would become pretty convenient scapegoats for competitors or their coaches when things didn’t go their way, and to deflect some of the accountability away from themselves at the expense of the officials. Further, such comments work to undermine faith in the game itself. That’s why, from minor leagues right up to the pros, nearly all sports leagues have

rules governing comments made by players and coaches regarding officiating. On the same line, referees are put in a position to make judgement calls. They’re trained to make the right calls. But, they’re also human. Should they have to fear the wrath of coaches and players at every turn? Our overarching belief in free speech would suggest, however, that players and coaches should be able to say whatever they want. Given the circumstances — with emotion running high, and with a series of questionable calls to point to — we can understand the desire to vent among the Canadian players. And, if a player is in the right on a particular call, isn’t that the perfect justification for speaking out? Of course, we in the media and fans don’t have to worry about that stuff. We can say whatever we want about the refereeing, more or less. It’s ironic, however, that the folks who are most affected by controversial calls — the players and the coaches — risk punishment when they say what’s on their minds.

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture, along with our national and provincial counterparts had a rare opportunity for frank, transparent discussion about changes to Canada’s agricultural programming recently when Ontario’s Agriculture Minister Ted McMeekin addressed the meeting of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture hosted in Toronto by the OFA. On the agenda was the expected outcome of Federa l / P r o v i n c i a l / Te r r i t o r i a l negotiations on Growing Forward 2, which will determine the next five years of agricultural programs for Canadian farmers. The federal and provincial agriculture ministers are expected to sign off on the new agreement this fall. Minister McMeekin shared some of the options being discussed by ministers at the table. Minister McMeekin suggested farmers can expect to see a reduction to current spending levels on business risk management programs including significant cuts to a key program — AgriStability. AgriStability is a vital program that helps protect Canadian farmers from large de-

clines in farm income due to market conditions, production loss or increased input costs. The OFA sees three main problems with the proposed cuts to AgriStability. First, such programs were originally designed so that farmers and government share the significant risks of producing food. The proposed cuts to AgriStability will result in a disproportionate “risk shifting” to farm families, instead of “risk sharing.” Secondly, implementing the government’s proposed cuts to the program’s design will overshoot their targeted budgetary expenditure cuts. That’s because farmers will be less likely to enrol in the program if they perceive AgriStability will no longer provide adequate risk protection. Finally, cuts to business risk management programs such as AgriStability will only serve to increase the pressure on governments to distribute one-time assistance to producers facing sector-wide or regional challenges. Canada’s primary production agriculture represents the heart of Canada’s agriculture and agrifood sector, and contributes more than nine per cent of Canada’s GDP and more than 2.3 million jobs, or 13 per cent of all employment in Canada.

SEE OFA, PAGE 7

Thursday, August 9, 2012 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6 In the current financial difficulty facing much of the world, our agricultural sector has remained buoyant and become a driving force behind Canada’s economic prosperity. Agriculture is a strategic resource, and its viability and productivity must be protected. Cuts to AgriStability coverage or other business risk management program spending will most certainly lead to less effective programs for farmers. The OFA understands the federal government’s interest in balanced budgets, but it is unfair and irresponsible to make drastic cuts to these vital programs for farmers. Current programs and their associated coverage levels are crucial to keeping Canadian agriculture viable and competitive in increasingly challenging global markets. Funding and functionality of AgriStability and the rest of the current business risk management suite of programs must be maintained to deal with the situations beyond the farmer’s control such as this summer’s drought. Any additional investments into innovation, competitiveness or other industry supports cannot be reallocated from current business risk management programs. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture believes strongly that industry associations have the right to be engaged in the development of business risk management programs that will keep our industry viable. It is unfair and unrealistic to expect farmers to shoulder the risk alone. We will look for further open discussions with our elected officials to secure agricultural programming that will be an effective use of federal and provincial funds for Canadian farmers. Mark Wales is the president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture.

Darren ‘Capper’ Griffin of the 1000 Island Road Eagles, based in Gananoque, prepares his Honda Shadow for a showand-shine on Saturday at the Strathcona Paper Centre. Griffin and hundreds of his fellow motorcycle enthusiasts were in Napanee this weekend for the first annual ‘Ride with the Pack’ rally, organized by the Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Unit. The event doubled as a fundraiser for several charities, including the Children’s Wish Foundation, Interval House Napanee and the International Community for the Relief of Suffering and Starvation.

The other side of Sandbanks through sandscapes Like so many others, I am guilty of taking what we have on our doorstep for granted. I had to begin work as a park naturalist in 1984, before it finally sank in that Sandbanks Provincial Park is a natural gem, unmatched by any other park that I have ever visited in Ontario. I grew up in Prince Edward County and, as a child, played on the same sand dunes that today provides enjoyment for over 600,000 visitors annually. My parents and I enjoyed many a family picnic there and would return home with sand in our shoes, picnic box and clothing. It was the same sand that we found at adjacent Martin’s Outlet (not part of the park) where we danced to Danny and the Juniors, Johnny Cash, and The Diamonds, and watched the daring jump off the diving tower along the Outlet River. That was before the word “litigation”, and we all took responsibility for our own actions. The tower, of course, is no longer there. Good days, good memories of a place and a park that is synonymous with summer fun. But there is another, far more reaching side of Sandbanks Provincial Park. One that speaks of natural processes at work, and habitats for flora and fauna that have incredibly evolved to survive the hot, arid conditions. There is the story of moving sand dunes, some of them 20 metres in height, that covered up farmland. And a story of the St. Lawrence Iroquois who used Sandbanks as a seasonal fishing station. Let’s

not forget the geomorphology – how all this sand got here in the first place. All these stories have merged together in a praiseworthy book, called ‘Sandscapes’. It is another in the long line of ambitious projects that have been taken on by The Friends of Sandbanks, described on their website as a voluntary organization that works to supplement and enhance the existing Natural Heritage Education Program, recreation facilities, and services for visitors. The Friends of Sandbanks was founded in 1993. In its 80 pages and over 140 colour photographs and illustrations, Sandscapes takes the reader on a chronological journey, from the retreat of the Wisconsin Glacier 12,500 years ago to present day. Authors Jason Childs, Phil Ainsworth and Joanne Dewey do an admirable job of opening readers’ eyes to the changes that have occurred since the Outlet and Sandbanks sand bars rose above the water and sealed off the bays, forming West Lake and East Lake. A caption above a full page aerial view of the West Lake dunes reminds readers that the 8-km long West Lake bar that stretches from West Point to Wellington, is the largest freshwater baymouth barrier dune system in the world. The smaller sand bar which is still fondly referred to as Outlet Beach, although not as long at only three kilometres, is no less important for it is here where much of the camping takes place and, of course, provides space for

Outdoor Rambles the throngs of beach goers. However, despite there being over 80 photos in the book, not one of them has captured the thousands of sunbathers, or swimmers, or parasailers. In fact, except for some historical photos, there are no recent photos of the human element, and for good reason. The book is, instead, about the other side of Sandbanks – the story of geomorphology and flora and fauna. The park story that staff naturalists have been trying to teach park visitors through evening programs, guided hikes, campfire programs and special events since the early 1970s when the interpretive program first began. Jason Childs takes us back to the very beginning and tells us how the popular destination formed. Phil Ainsworth continues the story, telling us about the pre-history through to the days of

early tourism, before it even became a park. Even after living in this county all my life, and having worked at Sandbanks for eight summers, I learned new things from reading this book. For example, I did not know, or had forgotten, about Ontario House, Shore Acres or Bayview Lodge, although I was certainly up to speed on Lakeshore Lodge (the park had me do guided hikes there since I was the oldest employee in the park and could remember when it operated!), and to a lesser degree, Lakeland Lodge, Lakeview Lodge, and Evergreen House. The story of the moving dunes in the early 1900s is depicted in great detail in both text and black and white photos. The crowning glory of the book, I think, is Joanne Dewey’s contribution on the flora and fauna, and who better to write about it than someone who spent several years as a dedicated park naturalist, sharing her passion about the park. The chapter is replete with colour photos of hoary puccoon, antlions, wolf spiders, birds and special plants

that have adapted to life on the dunes. The book is a good read, on this, the Park’s 50th anniversary, and anyone who is not informed about the Park beyond its recreational attributes, should have a copy. Oh, a little bit of trivia from my files which is not contained in the book – Sandbanks Park contains 27.2 million cubic yards of sand. Just in case someone should ask, like they did me on one of my hikes there back in the 1980s! Sandscapes was edited by the Park’s Natural Heritage Education Coordinator, Yvette Bree, who has been with the Park since 1987. Copies of Sandscapes are available at $14.95 at Books and Company in Picton, Sandbanks Park and at various local wineries. I also have a limited number on hand. For more information on today’s topic, please e-mail tsprague@kos.net or phone 613‑476‑5072. For more information on nature in the Quinte area, be sure to check out www.naturestuff.net.

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 70 Years Ago August 12, 1942 n The ongoing war effort would create all sorts of otherwise-unimaginable spinoff. A new plant was to be built near the army base in Kingston to manufacture soap out of waste fats produced in the base’s kitchens. The new plant was expected to find a use for thousands of pounds of fat. Although this approach had been used in the past, the new plant would feature the latest equipment which would make the entire process more efficient. Some 10,000 meals were being served each day at the base. n Pork producers here and around the country would soon have to fill a very significant order. The British government was calling on Canada to send them 50,000 tons more bacon that year. The British were also looking to obtain more ham as well. Though the request for additional pork products would be a challenge to fill, farmers across the country were reporting a very good feed crop that year, a fact that would make the task of fattening the hogs that much easier.

35 Years Ago August 10, 1977 n Area farmers were worried that an ongoing drought could jeopardize agriculture in the area. One farmer said the dry weather was “far worse than the drought of 1966.” Many farmers said that, after a poor first crop of the season, many were finding it difficult to get anything to grow for their second crop. The bad weather meant bad news for farmers counting on those crops to pay the bills over the next several months. n Though signs had mysteriously been taken down, the KFL&A Public Health Unit advised that water from a spring near Springside Park was still not good to drink. Peter Moccio advised that it wasn’t the health unit that took down the signs. He also said that ongoing testing by the health unit showed that the water was still not fit for human consumption. In spite of the warnings, people were still continuing to fill up jugs at the spring for their household use. Even a nearby railway work crew would use the spring on a regular basis.

New platform for dark sky views By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER Lennox and Addington county continued to publicize its ‘dark secret’ on Tuesday, officially opening the L&A Dark Sky Viewing Area. Located at the Sheffield Conservation Area on County Rd. 41, 36 kilometres north of Napanee, the clearing consists of an artistically designed concrete platform amongst the trees. The area is a perfect spot for astronomers, both professional and amateur, to set up their telescopes or bring their camera to observe the heavens as nature intended. “We have something special here that most of southern Ontario doesn’t have,” said Terence Dickinson, a local astronomer and editor of SkyNews magazine. “When I realized that, I thought this is something we should do something about.” It’s not what L&A has that makes it an ideal spot to star gaze, it’s what it doesn’t have — more specifically, its lack of light pollution gives it the darkest skies in Southern Ontario. “The light of night has gradually pushed up into the sky, you can see the dome of light over Toronto,” said Dickinson. “It’s pushed up into the sky and out into the countryside... it so happens

Adam Prudhomme - Staff

A plaque give visitors a brief description of the area and the dark night sky above. that here, this is the farthest point south in Ontario still in the dark night sky, 36 kilometres from Hwy. 401.” Light pollution that creeps up into the sky dulls the natural brightness of stars, making far less striking when observed from urban areas. Slowly but surely word has travelled across the province about L&A’s unspoiled skies, as astronomers have packed up their telescopes and headed to L&A. Dark skies have quickly become one of the area’s biggest tourism tools. “We’ve been focusing on the last two years on our unique attributes that we

have here in our county,” said Stephen Paul, L&A’s Manager of Economic and Development. “Two years ago we started to investigate our wonderful dark skies. We all know by living here when you look up, you see what you’re supposed to see.” Paul then teamed with the Erinsville and Tamworth Community Development Committee, Quinte Conservation and Bon Echo Design to develop the $15,000 viewing area. “When I first envisioned this idea in my head of what it would be, it was a concrete slab,” said Paul. “Then I met Hans (Honegger of Bon Echo) and it quickly

changed. Thankfully it did... it certainly has that connection between heaven and earth.” Painted on the platform is a raven, the beak of which points north to serve as a reference for astronomers. The timing of the opening couldn’t be any better as this weekend the Perseid meteor shower is scheduled to be at its peak. Known as one of nature’s best and most reliable light shows, at its prime it produces 60 to 100 ‘shooting stars’ per hour, all visible with the naked eye. Saturday will be the best night, though Sunday should feature a nice showing as well. According to Dickinson, provided the sky is free of clouds, this year will be the best display of ‘shooting stars’ for the next two years. Dickinson says the viewing area will also be a great spot to observe the Milky Way, starting tonight all the way through Aug. 22 between 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. He recommends bringing binoculars. He also says there’s a good chance to spot him there on any given night, happily observing the night sky. He’s always more than willing to allow people to take a look through his high powered telescope as well. The use of the area is free to everyone.

‘Fill the Bus’ campaign on route this week Students in need supported by Salvation Army’s second-annual appeal for school supplies By Dominik Wisniewski BEAVER STAFF WRITER With students going back to school next month the Napanee Salvation Army’s second annual Fill the Bus Campaign is now in full swing. Launched this past Tuesday, the campaign provides children with the supplies they need to succeed at school. Dana Henry, the co-ordinator for Salvation Army Family Services, says that their backpack program has grown to what it is today due to partnerships with the Napanee Area Community Health Centre, Lennox and Addington Resources for Children and the Ontario Provincial Police. “We did have a backpack program before that but it was a very small one, until we worked as community partners and came up with Fill the Bus last year,” she told the Beaver during this year’s campaign launch at Wal-Mart. “We also work in partnership with Wal-Mart and the United Way who have given us $500 in funding.” Donations of school supplies and money are being accepted at the bus — donated by Martin’s Bus Service and parked in front of Wal-Mart — until this Saturday, daily from 3-7 p.m.

The Napanee Salvation Army kicked off its Fill the Bus Campaign this week and will be collecting backpacks, school supplies and monetary donations in front of the local Wal-Mart store. From left are Salvation Army summer student Shelana Mutch, Salvation Army Family Services Co-ordinator Dana Henry and Napanee Area Community Health Centre Community Development Worker Trish Reid. A charity barbecue featuring hamburgers, hotdogs, drinks, and baked goods will also take place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with all proceeds going to the backpack program. “Whatever monetary donations we get at the end, we’ll go and shop for whatever we think we’re still in

cepted, in addition to anything else students might need as a back to school necessity. According to Trish Reid, the Community Development Worker at the Napanee Area Community Health Centre, more children have already registered than last year.

“Last year we had 164 kids registered and served with fully supplied backpacks,” she said. Asked about the need for such a program, Reid said that recent job losses and employment changes make it difficult for families to find the extra income needed for school supplies.

“A lot of people have lost a full-time employed positions in the last year and are now part time,” she explained. “They have seen the crunch where extras such as school supplies are problematic because they don’t have the extra income.” Reid pointed out that the Salvation Army does not ask for any details on income, and encourage people that are in need to simply call and register. “It’s important that the kids have a successful start to their year,” she said. “If they are fully supplied then that’s just part of the first step to making it in school.” With the upcoming amalgamation of two school communities at Southview Public School, Reid said that during this time of change school supplies should not be a concern. “There is already anxiety about the changes so this is important to show that the kids are going together and are fully prepared,” she added. “It’s a whole different level of anxiety so decreasing that anxiety for kids is important.” Registration for the backpack program closes Aug. 13. Those interested in registering are asked to provide their child’s name, age, school and class when contacting the Salvation Army at 613-354-7633.

By Dominik Wisniewski BEAVER STAFF WRITER AWARTHA Credit Union is bringing back its popular community night this Friday, featuring the movie Mr. Popper’s Penguins, starring

K

Jim Carrey. The free event is sponsored by Kawartha Credit Union and the Napanee BIA. Claire Payne, a marketing assistant at the company’s Peterborough office, said the event has grown each year since it’s incep-

tion in 2010. “We’re just excited to bring something to the community there,” she said. “It starts at 8 p.m. since at our last movie we didn’t have many activities for the kids. We’re really hoping to bring some excitement before, so the children can enjoy

themselves before the movie.” That entertainment will include face painting and Mr. Twister, a balloon artist. Although there is no admission fee, donations will be accepted for the Napanee Community District Foundation. “We see it getting bigger each year and it’s certainly something we hope to continue,” she added. “For us being from the Peterborough branch, it’s an awesome opportunity to visit the community and reach out to thank our members.”

Payne said that approximately 150 visitors took in the last movie, a number she hopes will increase this week. Children’s activities will begin at 8 p.m. with the movie starting at 9 p.m. The screen is on John Street across from Market Square, between Dundas Street and Bridge Street. Should it rain that night, the movie will be postponed until Aug. 17. For more information contact the Napanee Kawartha Credit Union branch at 613-354-6678.

EVENTS… Demolition derby up next

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

“The derbies always put on a great show so we wanted to support the drivers and have it as a free event.” Volunteers are always welcome and the committee is offering advertising space on the concrete barriers that will be used during the demolition derby. “They will be there for the derby and for the whole year,” she said. The event is being held on municipally-owned land and McCarney is already looking ahead to the next event. Whether that will be a winter venue or something next summer has yet to be finalized, she said. “We’re tossing around an idea or two for the winter but we’re going to see how this one goes,” she said. “The RCMP Musical Ride we can reapply for but they wouldn’t be back in this area for four years. That’s not on the table for next year.” A future event to coincide with a waterfront festival could be in the works, she said. “The show and shine is new for us so we would love to see a big showing,” McCarney said. For more information visit www.dezevents.ca or contact McCarney at 613-654-1547.

Midget Express swinging hot bats at Nationals After two days of play, Grant’s Insurance Napanee Express are in great shape at 3-1 By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER SPORTS he Grant’s Insurance Napanee Express had no issues hitting in New Brunswick’s salty air on Tuesday, cashing in 16 to run their record at the U-18 Men’s Fast Pitch Canadian Championship to 3-1 heading into yesterday. Those runs came in particularly handy in their second game of the day, as they erupted for a seven run fourth inning en route to a 8-7 win over Caledonia. Eric Morgan was the beneficiary of all the runs, picking up the win despite allowing six runs over four innings. John Baker restored order over the final three innings, allowing just one run to preserve the lead. After managing just one run off Caledonia starter Kent Wardell

Jordy Mills and the Grant’s Insurance Midget Express gave their pitchers plenty of support on Tuesday, generating 16 runs in two games. through three innings, the Express jumped all over Mitch Green, tagging him for seven runs, five earned,

on eight hits. Taylor Brown lead the charge at the plate, driving in four runs. Cole Bolton

plated three while Sloan Creighton knocked in two. That game marked the second time they’d scored

eight runs on the day, as they pulled the same trick that morning against the Nelson, N.B. Vics in an 8-1, five inning mercy win. Napanee wasted little time in this one, posting a five spot in their first at bat. Baker made those runs hold, allowing just one run on five hits over five innings. Bolton, Brown and Jordy Mills each went yard for the Express. Napanee’s only set back came in their first game, a 4-2 loss to Alberta's Irma Tigers. That's the same team that eliminated the Express last year at Nationals with a 15-0 drubbing. This time around Napanee kept it much closer, battling to a 2-2 tie before surrendering a two run homer in the top of the seventh. Bolton, who started the game, also had a home run. On the mound he kept his team in the game, as the

home run ball was his only real mistake. Barry Hogeboom drove in Napanee's other run. The bats couldn't offer much support as Tiger starter Carson Soucy scattered four hits. Heading into yesterday’s action the Tigers appeared to be an early favourite, going 4-0. Napanee followed that game with a 5-2 win over the Saskatoon Selects. Morgan picked up the complete game win, striking out 13 along the way. Hogeboom had two RBI while Brown and Creighton had one. On Wednesday the Express were scheduled to take on Cobourg and East Hants, N.S. Results weren't known at presstime. Today they will take on the host New Brunswick Twins team and the Quebec Express to wrap up the opening round. Playoffs will begin tomorrow and continue through Sunday.

Napanee to host Mite-y tourney Three Express teams entered By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER SPORTS trio of Napanee Express junior mite teams will compete at the fairgrounds on Saturday, with town and provincial bragging rights on the line. The tournament will feature the Blue, Red and Mite girls Napanee Express teams, though originally it was planned to host entries from across Ontario. As it turned out, Napanee was the only centre that fielded any teams with players ages seven and eight this year. Rather than cancel the tournament, Softball Napanee has instead organized a three-team tournament, where the emphasis will be on fun. Games will be played at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with the top two teams facing off at 3 p.m. After the tournament wraps up the kids will be invited to take part in a skills competition, as well as other fun activities.

A

Though it may lack the drama of a larger tournament, the experience will no doubt pay off for the junior mites going forward. Softball Napanee has always been dedicated to developing local players which has lead to success at all ages over the years. The following week things will be a little more competitive when Napanee plays host to the Provincial Women’s Softball Association Mite (U-10) Grand Championship, Aug. 17-19. This time around teams will travel from out of town, with two Express entries taking part. Also competing will be teams from Windsor, Brampton, Guelph, Cobourg, Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge and Chatham. The teams will be divided into the red pool and the blue pool, with the top teams from each facing off in the championship game on Sunday at 5 p.m. There will also be a ‘B’ side championship played on Saturday evening. Games will be played at both the fairground and North Fred diamonds.

Austin James (left) and Josh Whalen put in strong finishes at the Canadian Juniors in Bridgewater N.S. last Friday. Both are members of the NDSS golf team.

Top 30 finish for golfers Whalen and James at Canadian Juniors Local golfers separated by single stroke at national even BEAVER STAFF Rough third rounds by Austin James and Josh Whalen at the Canadian Juniors in Bridgewater N.S. proved costly, digging a hole too deep for the local

golfers to dig out of in Friday's final round. Whalen, who trains out of Napanee, rebounded to shoot 72 over the last 18, finishing tied for 24th with 295. His third round 75 pushed him back towards the rest of the field after

hanging tough through the opening two. James, from Bath, was also within striking distance of the leaders before stumbling to a 79 in the third round. He bounced back with 70 on Friday, finishing tied for 30th, just

one shot back of his fellow Lennox and Addington area golfer at 296. Surrey BC’s Adam Svensson captured the title with a course record 64 on the final day, finishing at 283 strokes for the four day tournament.

MEMORIAMS

BALESDENT - In loving memory of a loving husband, a dedicated father, grandfather and father-inlaw, Edmond “Eddie”, who went to be with the Lord August 10, 2007. God called your name so softly, That only you could hear And no one heard the footsteps Of angels drawing near, It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you Home, Each time we look at your picture, You seem to smile and say, “Don’t be sad but courage take And love each other for my sake”. Always loved and forever in our hearts. Sadly missed by your wife Joan, sons, Shawn (Allana), Jamie (MarieJosee) and grandchildren, Joshua, Shawna, Alexandre and Simon. FERN - In loving memory of Robert G. Fern, January 4, 1980 and Robert A. Fern, August 12, 1999. Forever missed, loved and remembered, Anne, Keith, Jacenta, Natalie, Serena and Nathan.

MEMORIAMS

T H E

POWELL - In loving memory of our dear dad, Leo, who left us one year ago, August 11, 2011. Always loved and remembered by his daughters, Betty, Linda, Cindy and Brenda. POWELL - In loving memory of a dear brother, Leo George, who we lost one year ago, August 11, 2011. There is a bridge of memories From here to Heaven above, That keeps you very close to us, It’s called the bridge of love, As time goes on without you And the days turn into a year, They hold a million memories And a thousand silent tears, To us you were so special, What more is there to say, A smile for all, a heart of gold, One of the best this world could hold, Never selfish, always kind, Leo, These are the memories you left behind. Forever in our hearts, Bonnie, Jean, John and families.

PYATT - In loving memory

of a dear son, DANIEL, who passed away August 7, 2011. There is a mother who misses you sadly, And finds the time long since you went. And I think of you daily and hourly But try to be brave and content. But the tears that I shed in silence And I breathe a sigh of regret, For you were mine, and I remember, Let us not forget. Lovingly remembered by Mom and family

OWLS - In loving memory of a dear sister, Rosemary, who passed away August 13, 2010. She has gone away, But she’ll never be forgotten, She has slipped from the bonds of earth, But memories of her will live on forever in our hearts. Loved by Marilyn and family.

LEO GEORGE POWELL July 24 1930 - August 11, 2011 In loving memory of a dear husband, dad and grandfather. What is bugging your garden? “The first week of August is the best week of the year in the garden.” ~Len Cullen, my Dad The highlight in the garden is here. As my Dad always said, the garden looks its very best the first week of August. Many of the summer flowering perennials are at their floriferous peak, annual flowers are coming into their own (the summer heat having put some gas in their tank) and trees and shrubs have not been eaten or blighted with fungus. If ever there is a time when ‘all is right in the gardening world’, this is it. Where bugs and diseases are concerned I am a proponent of ‘live and let live’ for the most part. The vast majority of pests in the garden are either beneficial or benign. Ladybugs eat aphids, birds munch on beetles and the larvae of moths and butterflies, and even the neighbourhood raccoon – nuisance that it may be – consumes voraciously large quantities of white and grey grubs, perhaps rolling back your lawn, roots and all, in the process. They provide this service for a price. Your job is to roll it back again and over seed with fresh grass seed (the good news is that this is the best time of year for seeding a new lawn; thickening an established one is now through September). As optimistic as I am, I have to admit that controlling bugs and diseases has its place in the sustainable garden. The half way point in the gardening calendar is the best time to give some of the most troublesome bugs and diseases a shot of control. Here is my short list of pests and diseases that could require attention this weekend: Tomato Blight. Public enemy No. 11 where tomatoes are concerned. We have seen blight spread across the continent over the last 20 years or so. While it was always out there (this current blight is related to the one that effected potatoes, a related crop, in Ireland in the mid 1800s), it seems more prevalent now than ever. The spores of this disease move through the air on hot, damp days and there is nothing that you can do about that. The result is a gradual collapsing of the leaves from the ground up, first showing black or brown spots and then a complete ‘torching’ appearance to the whole plant. The disease, if untreated, can move very quickly, killing an entire plant in seven to 10 days. Prevent the effects of early (August) and late (September) blight on your tomatoes by applying Bordo mixture every 10 days to two weeks. Copper is the active ingredient and nothing seems to work quite like it. When you apply Green Earth Bordo you control the spores of blight, thereby preventing the effects of this persistent disease. Bordo mixture is a very handy product to have

around during the summer as it also helps to prevent or minimize the effects of rust on hollyhocks, scab and black spot on roses, apples, and pears, and downy mildew on all squash plants, summer and winter varieties alike. Aphids. Under a hand held magnifying glass an aphid looks like a light-bulb with the head at the ‘screw’ end and the bulbous shape at the rear. They are about

Mark Cullen Green File

the size of the head of a pin. Aphids like to munch on the new, tender growth of fast growing plants. My rudebeckia get a serious infestation every season about this time of year. Control of aphids can be as easy as blasting them with a sharp spray of water from the end of your hose using the pistol grip nozzle, the same one that you use for washing the car. They come back within a couple of days, so don’t get your hopes up that you have ‘solved’ the problem acting as human water cannon. The novelty wears off after a few applications. Insecticidal soap, Trounce, or End All can work; the most effective controls on the retail shelf. Potato Beetles, Earwigs, Ants, and Sowbugs. The crawling insects that make their way into our lives are often found in unwanted places. The ants on a march across the patio into the house, the earwigs in my dahlias, and the persistent potato bugs on my potatoes (even though there are no other potatoes within a mile) can all be controlled using a miraculous powder that is not a poison at all. Silicon dioxide or diatomaceous earth is amazing stuff. It is made of finely ground up flowers that were fossilized a few million years ago. Looked at under a microscope the powder looks like fine shards of glass. As beetles, ants, and the like move over this substance the waxy protective coating on their underbelly is removed by the abrasive action of the powder. In a day or two they dehydrate and are ‘toes up’ as a result. Sold under the trade names of ‘Dio’, ‘Ant killer’ and ‘Crawling Insect Killer’, the contents in the squeeze bottle are always the same. Be persistent with this stuff and re apply it every time it rains or you water the garden. Powdery Mildew, Black Spot, and Maple Blotch. While these ‘problems’ are generally not lethal where your garden is concerned there is an environmentally responsible control: garden sulphur. This powder is harmless to children, pets, and the environment as are all of the above mentioned products. Applied in 10 day to two week intervals it can help to

minimize the effects of many common diseases on roses, apples, and Norway Maples. I hasten to add that the maple blotch that is so common on big leafed Norway maples is cosmetic and not harmful to the tree over the long haul. But it is ugly. Garden sulphur is a great product to keep in the garage for plants that love an acidic soil. Rhododendrons, azaleas and blue hydrangeas with yellowing leaves enjoy a shot of this stuff right on the soil at the root zone two or three times throughout the season. Asian Lily Beetles. Perhaps the most asked question this time of year is ‘how do I control the beetles on my lilies’. The answer is surprisingly simple. Apply ‘leaf shine’, containing the active ingredient ‘Neem oil’ to the underside of the leaves of each plant for control. Neem is not registered for use as an insecticide with the department of agriculture but anecdotal evidence has shown that this is the one and only control for this persistent bug. That and hand picking, of course. By the way daylilies are not susceptible to the lily beetle as they are not members of the lily family. Hand picking. Don’t underestimate the value of spending some time in your garden picking off the big bugs that cause damage to your valuable plants. Tomato hornworms, potato beetles, slugs, and even tent caterpillars can be controlled with the swoop of a hand. If you can’t stomach the idea of crushing a living organism in your bare hands I recommend that you wear a quality pair of gloves. Works every time. Swoop and crush away. Get close to your plants during the best week of the year in your garden.

Members of the Lennox Agricultural Society took a break from their hectic fair set-up schedule last Wednesday to pay tribute to two key board members who recently passed away. Mary Belle Hambly and Gordon Kimmett each played different, yet equally important roles in setting up the fair over the years. Both were deeply missed when organizing this year’s event. “Mary Belle used to take care of all our flowers, said Carol McKinley, Secretary/Treasurer of the Lennox Agricultural Society. “If you drove past her house you’d see how beautiful her flowers used to be. Gord was here doing just about everything. To those who didn’t know them, they may not be aware of their contributions. Much of their work was behind the scenes but the current board members say its been tough organizing this year’s fair without them. In a fitting tribute, the current board members dedicated a tree in their honour, complete with a plaque. Members of Hambly’s family were on hand to witness the dedication of her tree, located between the food booth and equestrian arena. Her work with Friends of the Earth is also noted in the inscription. Every Earth Day she could be found cleaning the ditches and sides of the

The Lennox Agricultural Society paid tribute to the late Mary Belle Hambly on Wednesday, placing a plaque in front a tree in her honour. Her greatgrandchildren Braelyn Thompson (left) and Natia Fraser assisted in installing the plaque. road throughout Napanee. Kimmett’s tree is located behind the poultry barn. Both trees were planted in the spring, replacing older ones that had to be taken down. McKinley says as the trees grow they’ll serve as a long lasting memorial to two board members who played a huge role in ensuring the fair’s continued success. Though no longer here in

body, the trees symbolize their continued involvement with making the fair apart of Napanee’s identity. “Our grounds have actually been prize winning grounds, said McKinley. “People love to come to our grounds because they are so beautiful and (the new trees) will help to keep them going this way. It’s the perfect way to dedicate to these members.

Bhaktimarga Swami made his way through Napanee this past Thursday.

‘Walking Monk’ preaches benefits of simple living By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER Bhaktimarga Swami, aka the Walking Monk, is currently in the midst of a cross-Canada pilgrimage urging Canadians to adopt a more car-free, care-free lifestyle. His journey began last September in Cape Spear Nfld. and, with a couple of month-long breaks in between, saw him stroll through Napanee last Thursday. “We’re living in a world with a younger generation that is very desensitized in a way and over stimulated in everything,” said Swami. “Nothing is fresh and new. Here’s a new take on life: go for a walk and not get really hung up on any place of thing. Just kind of take in all the elements and learn a little detachment.”

Throughout his journey he welcomes others to walk with him for as long as they can, and to take a break from their hectic schedules. “Most people aren’t walking that much and everybody’s obsessed with automobiles and devices and so on and so on, said Swami. “I’m trying to make the statement of ‘let’s experience more of a carefree kind of life’. You might get a little taste of it, then you’ll crave more." Swami, who was born John Peter Vis in Chatham, Ont., adopted an eastern monastic life in the Hare Krishna movement in 1973. Now 59-years-old, he shows no signs of slowing down. This trek will mark his fourth cross Canada journey. The first two he did from Newfoundland to British Columbia without any breaks. This time around he has taken a couple of months off here and there, walking about 30 kilometres per day. Assisting him is Daruka Das and his parrot Billy Jean, who

follow him in a car and provides him with food and arranges for places to sleep. To help avoid the summer heat, Swami typically begins walking at 3 a.m. and breaks around midmorning. “It’s a way to see (Canada) close up, he said of walking coast to coast. "Before I became a monk I had driven across and also hitch-hiked across. I dare not, when I was that young, see it really close. I know it’s kind of an extreme kind of walking program but I get a lot of satisfaction out of it and it’s a chance to meet a lot of people in kind of an organic kind of way. Though he’s never lived here, the Napanee area is close to his heart as his father worked on a farm in the area shortly after immigrating from the Netherlands. His mission during the walk is simple: he wants nothing but a few minutes of people’s time as he attempts to show them a completely different lifestyle than the 9to-5 rat race. “I like to say it’s more of
