Push is on to create brain-injury centre Hugh Finlay acknowledged for ongoing efforts BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

When Hugh Finlay received a call around supper time one evening telling him he’d won $10,000, he was ready to brush it off as a scam and hang up the phone. Thankfully for his sake, he decided to hear out the caller, who turned out to be CARE Canada president Gillian Barth, as the prize was indeed legitimate. As it happened, he was being awarded for his ongoing efforts to open an acquired brain injury centre in his hometown of Napanee. He accepted the cheque in Ottawa this past October. Naturally, he donated the money into the fund dedicated to opening the Napanee Brain Injury and Rehabilitation Home. Finlay’s work also caught the eye of the Brain Injury Association of Canada, who awarded him and his wife Rosemary the Caregiver of the Year Award, which he accepted in Kingston, this past September. Through 32 years of relentless campaigning and fundraising, Finlay is now as close as he’s ever been to bringing the rehab centre to Napanee. “Right now the whole thing is in the ministry’s hands,” said Finlay of his quest to open the centre. “There should be an announcement pretty soon about it, we’re just waiting for it. The LHIN (Local Health Integration Network) have approved it. It’s gone to Toronto for its final approval and we’re just hoping something will happen soon.”

Kramp mum on Hastings-L&A Tory candidacy Local MP also says Michael Chong’s Reform Act needs further work before he’d support it

BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

ASTIN G S - P r i n c e Edward MP Daryl Kramp says it’s too early yet to say whether he’ll be carrying to Conservative Party’s banner for the new riding of HastingsLennox and Addington. “I really have to wait. I don’t want to jump the gun

H

on anything either way. The new riding executive can state a number of ways they want this to proceed… so I don’t want to be premature at all, until they come up with some sound sense of direction,” he said in a telephone interview on Monday. Kramp also has the option to seek the nomination in the new riding of Bay of Quinte; however,

because he lives within the boundaries of HastingsLennox and Addington, there would be a “natural affinity” to run in that riding. Kramp did say that he planned on seeking re-election. “It’s just a little too early yet,” he said. “We just formed the two new riding executives, and so obviously they have to get established for the new riding boundaries to be able to get an organization in place, and satisfy all the concerns of Elections Canada and everything like that.” The new riding includes all of L&A and most of Hastings County. Regardless of what riding Kramp decides to run in, he could have some new ground rules by which to play after the next election if Conservative MP Michael Chong’s parliamentary reform act is

passed. The private member’s bill would limit the power of party leaders. Under Chong’s bill, party leaders could no longer reject candidates in the nomination process. Further, MPs could call for a leadership review of the leader if 15 per cent of the caucus asks for it; the leader could be a removed if they fail to get 50 per cent of caucus members’s support in a secret ballot vote. Kramp says that while he likes “the intentions and the spirit of the bill,” if it were to be presented to MPs in its current form, he’d vote against it. “I have some concerns yet with unintended consequences. So, I would like to see (those) ironed out before the bill were to proceed a little further,” he said. One of his concerns is the ability of caucus mem-

bers to demand a leadership review. “Regardless of who says where the power is, the fact (is) if you have a leader and he’s elected by hundreds of thousands of people across the country in a democratic forum, should a very few select members of parliament have the right to overthrow that vote?” he asked. He said he was also concerned about the increased potential for a “rogue association” to hijack a local nomination process. Kramp said that he’d like to see some changes to the bill to assuage those fears as the bill moves to the committee stage. Regardless of the merits of Chong’s bill, Kramp says he’s never felt undue pressure from the party’s leadership. “I’ve never experienced once being dictated to. I appreciate that.

I’ve had my freedom.” Further, he said that he has voted against the party on certain issues, and would do so again if necessary. “Quite frankly, if I did (vote against the party often), I probably shouldn’t be with the party,” he said. “But, I have on occasion voted against the party. I think that would be normal. That’s what one should expect. We have people from across the country, and every issue is not the same across the country, and my responsibility as a member is to represent the people in our riding. That means occasionally I have to take a stand that might run contrary to an interest in another area. That’s democracy. I have had no hesitation doing that. I haven’t in the past and I certainly won’t in the future.”

Newburgh Community Christmas concert this Saturday Beaver Staff

The 34th annual Newburgh Community Christmas Concert is set for this Saturday — and the cast and crew are confident this edition won’t disappoint. The concert takes place

at the Newburgh Public School gym. There are two shows, one at 3 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation. As always, all proceeds will go towards buying Christmas gifts for children associated with

FLYERS IN THIS WEEK’S

Family and Children’s Services of Frontenac and Lennox and Addington. Last year, the event raised about $10,000, which was used to buy gifts for 150 children in L&A. The show will feature

some funny skits torn from today’s headlines and issues. Music, meanwhile, will range from country to rap to traditional Christmas classics. “There’s something for everybody,” said director Mary Anne Wood.

CENTRE | Persistence paying off Finlay began pushing for a centre shortly after his son Scott, competing in the Canadian down hill championships in Lake Louise, suffered a horrendous crash on the morning of Feb. 24, 1978. Once a 21-year-old athlete in the prime of his life, the crash did serious damage to his brain, leaving him paralyzed on his right side, limited mobility on his left and unable to talk. Knowing they wouldn’t be around forever to care for their son, the senior Finlays have since been pushing to bring the centre to Napanee not only for themselves, but for the thousands of other families across Canada in the same boat. Many of Scott Finlay’s former National Ski Team teammates have continued to support him over the years and many made the trip to Ottawa to see his father accept his cheque. Here in Napanee the town’s

healthy, your mental abilities are so much better as well.” Though it hasn’t been easy, Finlay and his team scored a major victory when the LHIN approved an operating budget for the 12-unit facility that would feature round the clock care. They’ve had to endure years of political red tape, but are now on the cusp of reaching their goal. They’ve continued to fundraise and are in the process of obtaining charitable status, a step up from their current not-for-profit status. “I’m just going to keep fighting, I’ve got a great, great, board,” said Finlay. “I think (politicians) thought we’d go away, but we didn’t. You’ve got to be stubborn. My dad used to say ‘if you don’t ask, you don’t get.’” He’s hoping to find out very soon that his persistence has paid off and brighten the future of other Canadians battling an acquired brain injury.

residents have taken a great interest in the project, many reaching into their own pockets to help fund the goal. “People keep asking where it’s going to be,” said Finlay, “It’s going to be in the old Lenadco building. It’s really unique when you think about it. It’s got an eight-doctor clinic, a dentist, a physiotherapy and health club, a drug store, a blood clinic….it’ll be the first (of its kind) in Canada.” Just a short walk from the proposed site is L&A Seniors Outreach Services and their highly regarded 55 Plus Activity Centre. All along Finlay has insisted that the acquired brain injury clinic be a rehab centre, not a ‘warehouse.’ He wants a place where residents will be engaged and active, not sitting in wheelchairs with only their basic survival needs met. “If you sit in a chair for a week, how mobile would you be?,” said Finlay. “If you’re

Savvy shoppers will want to make note of the red ribbons that are popping up along Napanee’s downtown core this week and save the date of Dec. 20 That’s the night of the Downtown Shopping Party and each store sporting a red ribbon will offer a variety of discounts in exchange for non-perishable food donations from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Over 30 stores are onboard for the event, which is now in its sixth year. “It is growing,” said Kat Monster, coowner of Starlet Boutique and founder of the Shopping Party. “As the downtown is growing, so is the Shopping Party. It’s awesome. (The Big Bright Lights) definitely add to the overall energy in the downtown. It creates a very festive environment. It’s like Christmas-palooza down here.” Of course, it just wouldn’t be a party without music. Plenty of local acts will dot the streets to lift everyone’s spirits. “There will be carollers, there will be reindeer, there will be wagon rides, Santa Claus will be at Serendipity Studios and they’ll be doing pictures for food donations,” added Monster. Gifts, draw prizes and other treats will also be offered through the night. This year in particular was one of change in the downtown. With the extra foot traffic

expected to visit, it’s an ample opportunity for a new shop to showcase itself to potential customers. “There are lots of new business that have joined the downtown in 2013,” said Monster, whose business always underwent a major expansion this year. “It’s nice to see all the merchants working together to put on a super event because truthfully this event is a great success because of all the merchants working together.” Since she pitched the idea to her fellow business owners six years ago, the party has resonated with the shop owners and customers alike. Both sides anticipate the event each year for the last minute shopping opportunities and the spike in business it spawns. “It’s definitely snowballed and it’s become a tradition,” said Monster. “It’s so nice to have something to look forward to in the downtown and it’s really nicely timed because it’s the last Friday before Christmas,” said Monster. “It’s a real coming together of the community,” she added. “It’s a great way for businesses to say thank you to their customers through discounts, or samples, or whatever promotion they may be doing for food donations. In turn it’s nice that customers are donating food donations because it’s a great way to help out our community.” Among the agencies that will be supported are Salvation Army, Interval House, Morning Star Mission and the Lennox and Addington OSPCA.

O’Neill’s Farm Supply to move into sales barn

BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

This Monday will be the last sale at the Selby Livestock Sales Barn. In the New Year, O’Neill’s Farm Supply will buy the facility and operate out that location. Terry and Sandra O’Neill opened O’Neill’s Farm Supply on Dairy Ave. in Napanee in 1994. Today, they have four locations,

which Terry said makes business difficult. “Our goal is to be more efficient and to make it so customers will get better service because right now a customer could pull in here and need some kind of seed. Well, we could say, ‘well we’ve got some here and some in the warehouse and then we’ll go to Vanluven Road and get the rest up there’ well that’s just not an efficient way of doing it,”

said Terry. Bert and Marriet Nibourg have owned the Selby Livestock Sales Barn since 2006 and now wish to retire that business. They sought out Terry and Sandra and made a deal. “Basically, we’re buying Bert’s facilities and then Bert’s taking our facilities. It’s win-win,” said Terry. “Terry was renting space from me already so I approached him and that’s

how we came to an agreement,” added Bert. The Feed Mill in Tamworth will continue to operate as usual; however, the other O’Neill facilities in Napanee will close and everything will be run out of one location in Selby. “We really can’t keep doing what we’re doing here. This is not sustainable. With the size of our business, trying to operate in this area was very diffi-

cult,” said Terry. “When we started out here it was fine. And then we acquired a few more locations and that was good for a while. But eventually you have to make decisions that change everything,” added Sandra. The sales barn currently sits on 60 acres of property. Terry said he would use about 14 acres to run his business, while the remaining acreage will remain farmland. Bert will continue to maintain his rental properties; however, he is ready to retire from the sales barn

BG

business. “The sales barn business, some people see it as one day a week, but it isn’t. … I want to retire from the sales barn business and have a little bit more time and do some travelling,” he said, stating the sales barn has required him to be oncall 24/7. “It’s lots of hours that people don’t see.” Terry said the sale will be finalized in the New Year and renovations will commence. However, it could take until spring 2014 to be completely moved in and operating out of the new location.

Bright Lights, big difference What a difference a few hundred thousand light bulbs make. Of course, we’re talking about the Big Bright Light Show, which is illuminating most of downtown Dundas Street this holiday season. Expanded in its second year, it’s a promotion that sets Napanee apart. All we have to do is look at the thousands of spectators that packed into the downtown core to catch the annual Parade of Lights on Saturday night. People hoping to catch a glimpse of the parade filled the sidewalks five or six spectators deep. We don’t think it’s a co-incidence that the parade attracted a record number of spectators in the second year of the Big Bright Light Show. Events like this can have a huge impact. Speaking informally with a few downtown merchants, we were told that some had their busiest night of business ever. It’s encouraging to see Napanee bucking the trend of dying downtowns. We have no doubt, too, that first-time visitors to town will be back again, even after the lights have come down and there isn’t a parade passing by. In a few weeks, the downtown businesses will be inviting shoppers to come by for the Downtown Shopping Party. This event, which couples business promotion with charitable initiatives, has proven to be very popular over the past six years. We’ve got no reason to believe that the next Downtown Shopping Party on Dec. 20 won’t be a record night, too. All downtown businesses, the Downtown Napanee Business Improvement Association, the Town of Greater Napanee and TransCanada (the lead sponsor of the Big Bright Light Show) are to be congratulated for taking an aggressive approach to drumming up downtown business. When the local economy is doing well, we all benefit.

Farmers encouraged to act now on federal Income Tax Act issue Canadian farmers continue to face a considerable disadvantage when it comes to income tax calculation. That’s because farms are the only businesses in Canada severely restricted to offset losses from one business or income source against profits from another. It’s an important issue for farmers because many have off-farm employment to help earn extra income and finance large capital expenses such as farm equipment and land. Young farmers and new entrants are particularly hard hit with significant out-of-pocket expenses needed to start farms. Many farmers – including those who are new to the sector – work jobs off the farm to help offset hefty farm

business costs. They may also need to support the farm during low income or low price years. No other business owner in Canada faces this tax implication. At issue for the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) is the federal government’s interpretation of The Income Tax Act as stated in the 2013 budget-implementation bill (Bill C4). Section 31 of the act is unique to agriculture and in the past has controversially been interpreted to require that where a taxpayer has both farming and some other source of income, the non-farm income must be less than the farming income in order for the taxpayer to be eligible to claim all farm losses.

Debra Pretty-Straathof OFA Comment Section 31 is an unfair representation of a farmer’s income level, and the OFA believes it’s a hindrance that could keep young people from the farm. With more than 25 per cent of farmers expected to retire in the next 10 years, this tax issue is counterproductive to attracting the next generation of Canadian farmers and investment in primary agriculture. What’s most disconcerting is that this issue has already been addressed. In 2012, the Supreme

Court of Canada, in the Craig v. The Queen, the court said that “if an examination of time, investment, industry engagement and proportion of daily routine determined that farming was the chief source of income or a component of that chief source, the loss deductions should not be limited.” The federal government’s 2013 budget-implementation bill (Bill C4) is regressive in its interpretation as outlined in the 2013 federal budget. The OFA is joining with Canadian Federation of Agriculture members to call for Members of Parliament to support the Craig interpretation of Section 31 of the Income Tax Act. In Ontario, OFA members are

year by at least a third. Don’t give them a bowl cut: reach into the body of the plant and remove some of the woody, less leafy growth with a sharp pair of hand pruners. This will encourage more growth from the middle portion of the plant, producing a thick, healthy appearance and more even flowering, in the case of the hibiscus. Fertilize? Generally I don’t fertilize my tropical plants this time of year. They are not growing as they did in the summer, so they have no need for the ‘nutrients’ or fertilizer. An exception is

the African violet which grows more or less year round. I fertilize them with half strength 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer every two to three weeks all year round. Re-Pot? A tropical plant has its own way of telling you whether or not you need to re-pot it. Look for roots that are growing through the surface of the soil. If they are not obvious to the naked eye then scratch the soil with your fingers to see if they lurk just beneath the soil’s surface. Ah ha! There they are. Now tip your plant on its side and

look for roots growing out of the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. If you don’t see them making an escape, feel through the drainage hole. If you find roots, your plant is telling you that it is time for either a bigger home or that it needs its roots pruned. If you choose to re-pot your indoor plant, be prepared to make a mess – a drop sheet is called for if you are going to do this indoors. Pull the plant out of the pot, roots and all. It is silly to think that you have to be gentle while doing this as, chances are, it is stuck in there, the

roots making pressure against the inside wall of the pot in their effort to get out. For a large tropical plant this could be a two person job. No worries, you can’t hurt the plant. Once released from its undersized pot, pull the roots of the plant apart and be ruthless in doing so. A pair of scissors may be called for. Or a small, sharp kitchen knife. The idea is to give the roots freedom and convince them that it is indeed time to create new ones: to put roots down into a new home. You are pruning the roots as you would prune the top portion of the plant and for similar reasons: to thicken them and encourage new growth. When choosing a new pot, only go up one size. A 10-inch pot calls for a clean 12-inch. An 18-inch calls for a 20 or so. I favour clay pots over plastic as I swear that plants perform better in them overall. But then, that could be in my head. I do, however, know that clay breathes through every pore, while plastic does not breathe. Be sure not to buy cheap, poor quality potting soil. Look for a quality mix that is weedless, light, open and one that does not contain nutrients. Many of the potting mixes created for summer containers contain a slow release fertilizer, which is well and good, but not for your valuable indoor tropicals that need a rest after the trauma of re-potting. A good, gentle watering after the re-potting exercise is over is all that is needed. Bird counts reveal migration trends Anne Brown of Kingston is following in her father’s footsteps. Her father was the principal of the H.H. Langford School on Napanee’s Centre Street, on the south side of town, but once a year, he assumed the responsibilities of compiler for the Napanee Christmas Bird Count, a position he held for a respectable 17 years. Anne took over the position in 2001, but has been participating in the count for 30 years. The count centres on the school and extends in a 24-km diameter circle. The area includes just north of Selby, west to Deseronto and east to the Bath area. As well as providing valuable insight into what birds are wintering with us every year, the annual bird count held every year at this time provides incentive to birders to remain active through the winter, and to keep their spotting scopes and binoculars in use. With over 100 species of birds expected in the Quinte area every winter, it cannot be denied that there are lots around to keep birders happy, even during the three lean months of the year. Four years ago, a Cackling Goose was obliging enough to hang around to be counted and a

late Killdeer has even showed up, noted the Napanee compiler. Last year, she says, the count produced almost 11,000 birds, representing 60 species. The Christmas Bird Count, otherwise known by the birding types as simply the CBC, has come a long way since pre-1900. Back then, people commonly engaged in a macabre holiday tradition known as the Christmas “Side Hunt.” Participants would choose sides, and off they’d go with their guns. Whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered quarry was the winner. Ornithologist Frank Chapman was eager to put an end to this “side hunt” and on Christmas Day 1900 suggested that rather than shooting birds, we should instead count them. And so was born the Christmas Bird Count, a tradition which is now enjoyed by some 50,000 participants each year across North America. From the original 25 Christmas Bird Counts held in 1900, close to 2,000 bird counts are now held on a chosen day between mid-December and early January, from Panama to Alaska and from Cape Cod to the west coast.

Terry Sprague

Outdoor Rambles The data collected from Christmas Bird Count participants over the years provide a wealth of information on wintering populations, and migration trends. While the numbers tabulated offer but a mere sampling of what’s really out there, statistically, the information provides important insight into the changes that may be taking place with bird populations in the winter. Locally, counts are held at Kingston, Amherst Island, Napanee, Belleville, Presqu’ile Provincial Park and Prince Edward Point. Each CBC is performed

within an assigned 24-km diameter circle, and observers tally the species, and total number of birds, observed within a 24-hour period. This winter marks the 114th North American annual count. Prince Edward County has held its count since 1977. With the help of computer savvy friends, we have been able to import the data from these numerous counts into an Excel spreadsheet which provides us with some interesting details regarding local populations, as well as highs and lows, and long term averages. Maps, originally poor quality copies of copies from copies of copies, were digitized a year ago, thanks to the efforts of Quinte Conservation. These maps, depicting the individual areas for each of the parties, are now e-mailed out to the party leaders each year. Since being a one-time compiler for the Belleville count some 40 years ago, and compiler for the Prince Edward count for two years, I have seen some dramatic changes in the way the counts are organized, results compiled and sent to headquarters. The Prince Edward Count has really

gone high tech! The old fold out maps and penciled-in tally sheets from past years are now just kept on file as something of a curiosity. This year’s count with compiler Pamela Stagg of Picton will take place this Saturday. Other bird counts coming up this month include Kingston and Presqu’ile Park on Dec. 15th, Westport on the 16th, Delta on the 18th, Thousand Islands on the 20th, and Amherst Island on the 27th. Belleville will conduct its count on the 28th. Meanwhile, at Napanee, compiler Anne Brown says although they have a dedicated core group of observers, the count needs some younger volunteers who are able to cover some areas on foot that their more senior participants are no longer able to manage. If interested, give Anne a call at 613-542-8790 or e-mail her at catbrown@kos.net. For more information on today’s topic, please e-mail tsprague@kos.net or phone 613476-5072. A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 65 Years Ago December 15, 1948 n The Napanee School Board said that it would turn over the East Ward School building to the town once its operations there had come to a close. W.E.Roy, chairman of the special building committee, said that it was possible that two rooms in the new West Ward school — which would eventually become The Prince Charles School — would be ready very early in the new year. In addressing the school board, town deputy-reeve Harold Webster said that a new industry was very keen to begin operations at the soon-to-be-former school property. n According to a report in The Beaver, “reports given at the annual banquet of the L&A Federation of Agriculture… gave evidence of the growing importance of and the increased interest in the organization.” Robert W. Morrison, vice president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, told local members that “it was time farmers got over a feeling of inferiority and that farmers had no need to be apologetic about themselves and their vocation.”

35 Years Ago December 13, 1978 n Newly-elected Mayor Glenn Herrington said that he hoped that council would focus on fiscal restraint and the industrial park over the next year. Herrington made the remarks during his first speech at the head of council since being voted into office in the latest municipal election. “We’ve got another project coming up,” he added. “It’s the (CNR) underpass (on Centre Street). A great deal of work has to be done before it becomes a reality.” Herrington was welcomed into the mayor’s chair by outgoing mayor Lorne Smart. n At the inaugural meeting of council for Napanee, the council voted to do away with its two current committees — the police committee and executive committee — and replace them with three new committees. Those new committees were finance and administration, property and personnel. Mayor Herrington, Reeve Ernest Marshall and Deputy-Reeve Grant Clark would all sit on the personnel committee. Herrington would also be ex-officio on the two other committees. Clark would chair the finance and administration committee, and Marshall would chair the property committee.

Grade 6 Southview Public School student Maddy Cronkwright and her classmates get some popcorn before heading in to watch a movie in French at the Boulevard Cinema

Cinematic experience, en français BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Local students took their French skills to the movies last week, taking classroom lessons and applying it to everyday routines outside of school. Grade 5 and 6 students from Southview Public School and Grade 4 and 6 students from Selby Public School went to the Boulevard Cinema last Thursday to watch Cirque du Soleil: un voyage imaginaire. Students greeted one another and made their orders in French. Southview and Selby schools received a provincial student engagement grant, which allowed the activity to take place. “The French teachers at these schools have co-planned lessons for Grades 4, 5 and 6 that promote authentic communication in French as a second language, where students

are engaged and are communicating in French with a purpose,” explained Southview teacher Jen Lisi. “For the last four-and-a-half weeks students have learned how to communicate in French when going to the movie theatre. We rented out the Napanee Boulevard Cinema and transformed it into Le Cinéma Boulevard.” Lisi’s students said they felt learning French was important to better their future careers and to make travelling easier. “I think it’s important to learn French because you can be bilingual (for your) job. And you can (understand) if people are French,” said Grade 6 student Maddy Cronkwright. She said she has used some of the French she has learned in school when travelling in French communities for dance competitions. Dylan Ware, another of Lisi’s Grade 5 students, said he wants to

learn French so he can speak with people more fluently across Canada. “I think it’s important to learn French because if someone needs help that doesn’t speak your language, you can help them through a situation. Like, say if you were in Quebec and you were walking down a street and a kid couldn’t find his parents, you could talk to him and help them,” said Ware. Lisi said it is important for students to learn how to use French outside of the classroom. “Part of our program is to incorporate authentic tasks for our students to learn a second language. That way they are finding a useful purpose for the language. We find that students are more engaged in their learning… Being able to come to the movies and have that experience, really deepens the learning of French and their love for the French language,” said Lisi.

Rediscovering Pride & Prejudice 2013 has marked the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. In the past decade it seems like the P&P spinoff has almost become a genre in its own right. In a bizarre twist of fate, Austen fans can now choose to read their favourite classic regency romance in a seemingly limitless number of forms: mystery (Death Comes to Pemberley), erotica (Pride & Prejudice: The Wild & Wanton edition), horror (Pride & Prejudice & Zombies), YA (Prom & Prejudice) or chick-lit (Bridget Jones Diary). Sometimes, as a reader, it is nice to have a safe, predictable story wrapped up in a shiny new package. The following are a few P&P knock-offs that I have recently enjoyed, in spite of the fact that Austen is probably rolling in her grave. Austenland by Shannon Hale finds Jane, a 30-something woman, struggling in the romance department. Her obsession with Mr. Darcy has ruined her for other men – no one has ever measured up. When Jane’s wealthy

great aunt passes away and bequeaths her an exclusive, all-expenses paid vacation to an English resort which caters to Austen-crazed women, Jane is skeptical. How will this trip into fantasy land (complete regency-era costumes and actors who never break character) bring her back to reality?

Catherine Coles Coles’ Notes The Jane Austen Marriage Manual by Kim Izzo, a Canadian writer, features another modern-day Austen obsessed heroine. Kate Shaw is a magazine writer who is generally quite happy with her life. That is, until her beloved grandmother dies and their family home goes into foreclosure. Friends rally around Kate and present her with a gift of limitless possibilities: a title to land in Scotland. It is a minis-

cule parcel, of course, but no one needs to know that. Lady Kate, as she becomes, sets off across the globe seeing if her newfound title will attract a wealthy man who might see her through these tough economic times. Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson is a silly, regency romance that follows a young woman named Marianne Daventry as she embarks upon the adventure of her life. She has just been invited to stay at a sprawling country estate with her sister Cecily, who has her sights set on the Lord of the Manor. Before Marianne even makes it to the estate, however, she meets a handsome stranger who will have her questioning everything. If you are in the mood for mindless, Austen-esque fluff, you can reserve any of the titles mentioned here from your branch of the County of Lennox & Addington Public Libraries. Neighbours create true winter wonderland

BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

IM and Betty Harrington could be considered a local version of Mr. and Mrs. Claus — they’ve created a Christmas village in their backyard and give out homemade cookies to those who visit it. The Harrington’s have displayed a Christmas village in their backyard for five years now. What started as a project they did out of their love for the Christmas season has evolved into an attraction that spreads across three backyards. “My husband and I, we started it. And then the neighbours to the east of us joined in and then the neighbours to the west of us joined in. So the three neighbours have their yards decorated and people walk through them and take pictures, said Betty. Lights and Santa direct people from the front of the Harrington’s home on 239 Thomas St. West to the backyard, where many

Over 40 trees and about 3,000 lights makes the village come to life each night. Christmas music plays while people walk through the display on Thomas St. West. Betty encourages everyone to come take a look. Christmas villages are woven together in a display of lights, trees and holiday love. “We love Christmas! • Interior Design • Home Staging • Window Treatments • Organization • Painting • Colour Consultations

Why not have a little bit of fun with making people happy? If you see the smiles that go on here at night, you would do it again. It’s a lot of work and we’re two old folks and we struggle to get it done but when we get it done, we just smile at ourselves because everybody is so happy to go through, said Betty. There are between 42 Christmas trees decorated in the three yards, which

have a number of sections within the village. The nativity scene is in Yuletide Stroll, Who Way has the Grinch, Mistletoe Lane includes a lover’s bench, and Christmas Crescent is set up to resemble downtown Napanee. “You just have to see it to believe it, said Betty. As for her favourite, Betty says she always has a soft spot for the nativity scene. “It’s the true meaning

of Christmas, she said. However, she also enjoys watching people stroll through Mistletoe Lane. “We are having a lot of fun with Mistletoe Lane because there’s a bench and people have a mistletoe over their head where they can get their picture taken. All we need is a proposal out there now. We just love it, it’s fun, she said. The Harrington’s meet everyone at the end of the

walking tour through the backyard Christmas villages, where Betty gives candy canes and homemade cookies to kids. “We want as many people to come as possible so we can put the feeling of Christmas in their heart and enjoy it, she said. The lights are turned on each day between 4:30 and 5 p.m. If weather allows it, the Harrington’s will leave the display up until Jan. 2.

Fire chief offers Christmas safety tips

Grand Slam Of A Job By GN Fire Services

Distractions common to the season can have a disasterous outcome

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME

door or forgetting about a lit candle while talking on the phone, it doesn’t take long for holiday celebrations to turn tragic. “Consider using battery-operated or electric flameless candles,” suggests Gervais. “Never leave cooking unattended, drink responsibly and keep a close eye on those who do not.” When it comes time to decorate the tree or decorate the house with lights, examine each strand for frayed wiring. It’s also suggested to unplug all lights before heading to bed or when leaving the house. Real trees are also potentially flammable and should never be placed near a fireplace, radiator or live candle. When it comes to heating the house, make sure all chimneys have been properly swept and all space heaters are kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn

Between decorative and scented candles, cooking big feasts and the distractions that come with visitors, the holiday season can be a recipe for a disastrous fire. Members of Greater Napanee Fire Services however feel it doesn’t have to be that way. By following a few of their simple tips the holidays can be safe and memorable for the right reasons. “I’m wishing for a firefree holiday season this year,” GNFS Chief Terry Gervais said in a release. “But I need (residents) to make this come true.” Although a fire can break out year-round, they’re most commonly inadvertently started by someone who isn’t paying attention to the task at hand. Whether it be leaving a boiling pot to answer the

such as curtains, clothing or upholstery. GNFS is also reminding all home owners that it’s the law to have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of their residence. It’s always a good idea to test them on a regular basis and replace all alarms that are over 10years-old. They also encourage installing a carbon monoxide alarm as well. Now is the time to devise a fire escape plan with two alternate exits, not after a fire breaks out. Making sure everyone in the house is aware of the plan could save a life in the event of an emergency. By following those tips, the town of Greater Napanee could very well help the chief’s wish of a fire-free holiday season come true. Loyalist issues advisory about water testing calls BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Reports have been made of a company offering water testing to homeowners in Loyalist Township. The municipality, however, says it has not authorized any companies to conduct testing on their behalf and that the water advisory for the area has been lifted. “There is no need for residents to test municipal water within their homes. The township’s water supply is safe and regularly tested throughout the distribution system,” a press release distributed Tuesday stated. A water advisory was issued for Amherstview, Brooklands and Harewood in Loyalist Township on Dec. 4 and lifted on Dec. 7.

During this time, it was advised water only be used for flushing toilets and not for drinking or washing food. While the advisory was in place, the township received reports from residents stating a company was offering water testing to homeowners. “It appears that the company is using tactics similar to the water filtration scam that hit the City of Kingston in 2011,” the press release stated. “Door to door salespeople try to convince unsuspecting homeowners to invest in a new water filtration, which can cost thousands of dollars and is unnecessary.” On Dec. 7, when the water advisory was lifted, over 45 km of affected watermains had been flushed and sampling was

conducted at multiple locations. “The water supply is safe. All quality control systems including filtration and chlorination remained fully functional at all times,” said David Thompson, director of engineering services for Loyalist Township, in a press release. The press release also stated, “there was no known contamination in the system” during the water advisory. “The drinking water advisory was not issued as a result of a watermain break or sanitary sewage contamination.” The release goes on to state that, “the loss of pressure placed the system at risk of contamination,” so a water advisory was put in place as a precautionary measure. Anyone with concerns regarding their water, or those being offered water testing by door-to-door salespeople, should contact Loyalist Township’s utilities department at 613386-7351 x116.

NDSS students to mark VE Day in Europe

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

A group of Napanee and District Secondary students will have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be in Europe for the 70th anniversary of Victory Day celebration. Organized by EF Tours, the Napanee students will join thousands of other students who will make the pilgrimage in May 2015. The goal is to have 7,000 Canadian high school students make the trip as a symbolic representation of every Canadian solider who gave

their lives fighting in the Netherlands for freedom. Last Tuesday interested students at their parents gathered in the school’s library for a rundown of what they’d experience on the trip. “With the 70th anniversary coming up, I asked EF Tours if they could change the itinerary so that it would just incorporate World War II,” said Francine LeBlanc, an NDSS teacher that is organizing the trip. “The reason being in 2017 it will be the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge, and that’s when I’m hoping

to do World War I.” EF Tours caters specifically to schools that take educational trips across the globe and has partnered with NDSS for several trips, including last year’s tour of Vatican City. Stops on the 2015 trip will include Check Point Charlie, Anne Frank House, solider cemeteries, the Berlin Wall, Schindler’s Factory, and Auschwitz, among other sites. “I’ve been to Auschwitz and that changed my life,” said LeBlanc. “To be that close to evil cleanses your soul.”

According to Principal Scot Gillam, intermediate students accompanied by school staff and parents will make their way around town tomorrow morning. If you’re not going to be

home, donations can be set aside at the front door or porch, or they can be dropped off at the school. All donations collected by TPCS will go to the Napanee Salvation Army Food Bank.

The students will arrive in Amsterdam on May 2 to start their 11 day tour. They will finish in Krakow, Poland, where they will board their return flight to Toronto. Retired teacher Dave Robertson is serving as the international liaison for the trip, having made the trip several times with his students. “Sometime on this trip, guaranteed, your child will get it,” Robertson said to the parents in attendance. “Something will happen on the trip and everything will make sense.”

He’s referring to the human side of the World War. He says there’s no comparison between seeing a photo and visiting the sites in person. Because 2015 will be the 70th anniversary of Victory Day, (specifically May 8, when the Nazi forces surrendered to the Allies), it will be a celebration like no other. “Our vets are getting older,” said Robertson. “The average age (of a WWII veteran) is 92 and according to Legion statistics over 17 are dying daily. This will probably be the last time

any significant number of them will be able to go on this trip.” During 2010’s tour the NDSS students had the chance to meet with some of the Canadian war vets who attended the ceremony. LeBlanc is hoping they’ll have the opportunity to do that again for their upcoming trip. The trip will be open to any students who will still be attending the school in 2015. They’ll likely hold a couple of fundraisers in the coming months to help offset some of the travel costs.

Gateway wraps us new workshop course Staff Reporter

A number of non-profit organizations and community agencies have come together to offer a program to provide employment workshops and resources to help individuals become more employable. The Limestone School Board, Gateway Communication Education Centre, Napanee Area Community Health Centre, Kingston-Napanee Literacy and Skills, Lennox and Addington Addictions and Community Mental Health, Career Edge and others have come together to offer a five-week workshop series that ended last week. The 10-workshop, five-week program has been so successful that it will be offered again at Gateway in January. “Non-profit organizations came together to offer employment work-

shops on basic skills and needs throughout our life: budgeting, eating properly, healthy wellness, mental health, addictions, selfesteem, confidence, and basic applications,” explained Trish Reid, community development worker from the Napanee Area Community Health Centre. She said workshops on self-esteem, self-confidence and mental health were main focuses. Brad Flear, employment support worker from the Canadian Mental Health Association, spent a lot of time speaking with the participants on those topics. “Mental health was a huge project and Brad went through and did ‘Mental Health 101’ and talked about personal health needs, strengths and weaknesses that we struggle with and how to cope with those,” explained Trish. “Every series is to promote and help build confi-

Raiders can’t ‘bear’ Pirates’ rally Three goal lead not enough BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

yan Casselman touched off an avalanche of stuffed animals at the SPC Tuesday night, scoring Napanee’s first goal in the Raiders’ annual teddy bear toss game. While his goal will help brighten the Christmases of some local boys and girls, it wasn’t enough to top the Picton Pirates, who rallied for a 4-3 win. That loss, coupled with an 8-2 drubbing Friday night in Port Hope, left the Raiders with no gains in their playoff chase and two more games shaved off the schedule. Tuesday’s loss hurt that much more considering the home team jumped out to a 3-0 advantage within the first 11 minutes. Casselman bested Pirate keeper Adam Wood on his glove side to open the scoring and end his bid for a sixth straight shutout. Blade Grigg and Bud Norris assisted on the goal. Less than a minute after the teddy bears had been scooped off the ice Chris Doyle added another marker from Murray Keenan and Austin Boulard. With the shock of the early lead still setting in, Tyler Romain struck for a third goal in a three minute a 30 second span, causing the Pirates bench to take a time out. The pep talk seemed to work as the Pirates shutdown the Raider offense the rest of the way and stormed back with four sec-

ce cold nerves mixed with some clutch shooting allowed the NDSS Golden Hawks boys basketball team to hold off the LCVI Lancers and win 4541 on their home court. Josh Martin rolled in a key layup in the middle of the fourth quarter to give the Hawks a 39-38 edge. That was the start of a five point run for the Hawks and allowed them to finally put some distance between their opponents. Martin finished the game with a team high 20 points. “The boys jumped out to a quick lead, it was 11-4 after the first quarter,” said Hawks coach Jim McKinney. “(LCVI) did battle back in the third and they actually took the lead. Our kids showed some character. They didn’t show any panic as the lead dis-

appeared. They just continued to play our game and tighten up the defense in the fourth.” Napanee entered the final quarter clinging to a 31-30 lead and though they did fall behind, managed to stay calm and close out the game. McKinney pointed to the defense of Bryce Garrett as a huge reason for the win, noting he completely shutdown the Lancers’ point guard. Nic Nieman, Hayden Ford and Maverick Snider each hit threes for the Hawks, all in their 11-4 opening run. With the win Napanee moved to 2-1 in KASSAA play. They travel to La Salle this afternoon and host Regi on Tuesday before the exam break. In the senior game Napanee was edged 55-51 by the Lancers.

Napanee’s Blade Grigg rifles a shot on Picton goalie Adam Wood in the first period of Tuesday’s game. ond period goals, one each from Brian Bunnett and Evan Greer with two from Jack Davidson, to steal the victory. “We had a good start in the second period and we had a lot of good chances,” said Raiders head coach Mike Hartwick. “We knew they were going to come at us, they’re obviously talented. We made a couple of mistakes that ultimately cost us some goals.” The Napanee bench was visibly upset when Picton’s Brandon Peever was allowed to stay in the game after delivering a knee-onknee hit on Romain that forced the Napanee forward to hobble off the ice. Peever was assessed a two minute penalty on the play. Many from the Raider bench were shouting for the ref to show him the door. Romain did return for the second period. Later in the game

Napanee’s Boulard and Kyle Murphy were given misconducts for checking from behind, calls that Hartwick questioned. The entire game was a chippy affair with Picton earning 24 penalty minutes compared to Napanee’s 26. Despite taking the loss Kyle Copeland turned in another great game, stopping 62 of 66 shots. Wood finished with 38 saves. Tuesday’s showing was much improved over Friday’s road loss to the Panthers. Keenan Murray got the Raiders off to a good start, scoring his first Empire B League goal at the 7:47 mark. Both teams entered the dressing room with a goal before the Panthers came out blazing in the second. Penalty trouble caught up with Napanee as they allowed two power-play goals and found themselves down 4-2 at the

buzzer. Josh Murphy did have a short-handed tally to keep it close. The Panthers iced the game with four goals in the third. Following their winless week the Raiders slipped two more points behind the Campbellford Rebels in the race for the final playoff spot, now trailing 25-20. The Rebels, at 11-10-1-2, have a game in hand (16 remaining) over the 9-14-02 Raiders. Picton meanwhile moves to 24-1-1 on the year, and tightens their grip on the best overall record. Their 49 points is also approaching historic territory as they have 14 games left to try and best the league record 74 points. That was set by the 37-3 Napanee Raiders back in 2008-09. Amherstview sits a distance second to the Pirates with 30 points.

Unlucky seventh straight loss for reeling Deseronto Storm Picton Pirates and Amherstview Jets combine to outscore slumping club 20-3

Beaver Sports

ates with the Empire B League's top two teams left the basement dwelling Deseronto Storm smarting this week, suffering two lopsided losses. After an 11-0 thumping from the first place Picton Pirates Thursday night on the road, the Storm returned home for a 9-3 bashing on Friday at the hands of the Amherstview Jets. Though the Jets and Storm wound up combing for 12 goals, it took nearly

D

30 minutes for either side to break onto the scoresheet. Amherstview’s Jesse Stone did the honours, scoring at the 9:55 mark of the second to start the tidal wave of goals that followed. Jared Boomhower knotted the game a few minutes later with help from Mitchell Thompson and Josh Cameron. That was the last time the Storm were still in the game however as Zach Masterson restored the lead at the 16:30 mark. Matt Horton went on a tear from there, scoring three

goals in just over two minutes to close out the period. Cameron broke up the hat trick with a goal at the 18:28 mark from Thompson and Riley Muise. The Jets continued to pour it on in the third, this time with Brett Yake potting a hat trick. Brody Taylor added another for the visitors. Chris Rogalsky had the Storm’s only snipe of the third with Brett Bateman earning the assist. Brock Tufts took the loss, stopping 54 of 63. Troy Paquette earned the win with 46 saves. Deseronto

squandered all four of their power-play chances while the Jets converted on two of six. Unlike Friday’s loss in which the game's outcome was in doubt for at least half the game, Thursday’s featured little mystery. Picton’s Corey Prince scored at the 2:25 mark of the first, setting up the ugly 11-0 game that was to follow. Picton held a 5-0 lead at the close of the first. They’d add two more in the second and four more in the final period, outshooting Deseronto 5920 on the night. Matt

Loveys allowed all 11 goals, turning away 48 shots. Adam Wood earned the shutout, his second straight over the Storm, stopping 20 shots. He’d go on to blank Campbellford on Sunday to run his shutout streak to an impressive five straight. The streak began Nov. 24 with a 7-0 win over Port Hope. Overall he’s 8-0-1 on the year with six shutouts and a miniscule 0.67 goals against average. With the two losses the Storm drop to 3-21 on the year. Deseronto will hope

to right the ship tonight when they welcome the Port Hope Panthers to town for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. Prior to Friday’s game the Storm welcomed veteran Brett Maracle back into the fold. Last year he played 26 games with his hometown Storm, scoring 10 goals with seven assists, finishing the year as the team’s second highest scorer. He was also a member of the team for their GMHL years, helping them win the Russell Cup in 2010.

Goals for Napanee were provided by Holmes, Bailey and White, assisted by Cal Uens, Joshua Reid and Holmes. In the semi-final game on Sunday against Oakridge, Mullins got the 6-0 shutout. Scoring for the Stars were Mundle, White, Brooks and Bailey, with support from Liam Eakins, Hearns, White, Mundle, Holmes and Bailey. The Stars had a chance at redemption as they faced Newmarket again, this time in the finals. The

Napanee outscored Cobourg Friday night for their first victory 4-2, with goals by Elliot Mundle (two), Connor Brooks and Ben White, and Emerson Kennelly earned the win in net. Josh Martin is a member of the NDSS Golden Hawks junior boys basketball team. He posted a team high 20 points in Tuesday’s game, helping Napanee to a 45-41 win over LCVI. He was clutch in the fourth quarter, helping to ignite a comeback and give his team some breathing room for the final minutes.

game was tied at the end of the first period on a goal by Hearns, assisted by Brooks and Maracle. An action packed second period ended with no scoring for either team. Napanee really turned on the heat, scoring just minutes into the third with a goal by Greg Mills, assisted by Bailey and Brooks. An amazing bar down snipe from the point by Isaac Uens, assisted by Mills and Hearns gave the Stars a two goal lead with six minutes to go. Newmarket managed to put one between the posts during a power-play bringing the score to 3-2. With just 22 seconds left Napanee sealed the win with an empty net goal by White, Reid and Bailey for a final score of 4-2. A tremendous effort by every member of the team led to a welldeserved win for the Atoms. Special recognition goes to Connor Brooks who received the MVP award for the team. n After a 4-2 win in Clarington a week ago, the Napanee Exit Realty Minor Bantams lost a close one to the same team in the return match by a 6-4 score. Down 1-0, Steven Shea broke in alone, and Brendan Hagerman netted the rebound. Then behind 2-1, the Stars exerted relentless pressure, before Adam Doyle stretched the twine, with assists earned by Kiel Benton and Shea. Still playing catch up and down 4-2, Hagerman used a glove to stop a dump-out off the glass to blast a shot that Shea converted into another goal. Kael Fredenburg tied it at four with a solid point shot through players, but it was not enough. The Toros got the winner on a too-many-men power-play, and added one

into an empty net. The boys face Cobourg tonight at 6:30 p.m. on the Home Hardware rink, and are home to Whitby White Saturday at 7:30 p.m. n The Major Midgets were hosts to Oshawa on Friday night. The game brought great fight and spirit from the boys, who were already down in numbers due to injuries and suspensions. Adam Weatherhead earned three points on the night with two goals and an assist, and Colsen Bertrand added a third goal for the Stars. Ian MacGregor, Dalton Manley, Jeremy Martin, and Troy Kenney each had assists. The final score favoured Oshawa 5-3. Monday, the Major Midgets greeted Kingston in their first match of the season. Nate McFarland was solid in net, stopping a slew of shots. The game stood at 1-0 for Kingston for two periods but the Stars never gave up. With only 11 skaters, the boys had their mettle, and competed hard, rushing to be first on the puck, with solid body-checking and key shots on goal. Kingston tucked the final in with 56 seconds left in the third to seal the 2-0 win. n The McDougall Insurance Novice AEs had two away games this weekend, and posted a loss and a win. The Kingston Jr. Canadians got the win on Saturday, with the Stars lone goal going to Daniel Chase and assists to Karter Vermilyea and Zered Haller. The squad played the PEC Kings on Sunday and got a 6-5 win. With shared goaltending by Ian Isbester and Aiden Vallier, the team played a well-battled game. Connor McGinnis had the only goal in the second, and scored again in the third helped by Chase. Then later in the third set up by Buxton, Haller beat the goalie glove side. With the Kings’ goalie pulled in the last 1:30 in the game, the Stars played an outstanding defensive game to hold them off for the win. n The Napanee Country Traditions Novice “A” Stars tamed the Pickering Panthers Saturday afternoon in a dominating 7-0 win at the SPC. The Stars flew out of the gate with three goals in the first period and two in each of the next two periods to secure the convincing win. Scoring in the game were Cal Uens (three), Spencer Cranley (two), Will Myers and Carter McKee. Assists went to Nolan Fox (two), Ty Kemp, Uens, Myers, Taylor Gilmour, Gavin Brooks and Jack Madden. The shutout was earned by the Stars netminder, Jacob Brown. Tyler Brady, Logan Lalonde, Spencer Cranley (two), and Lambert all had assists. Their opponents scored the next four to regain the lead before Spencer Cranley closed out the Napanee scoring on a setup by Catena. On the road, they lost by an identical 6-4 score to Whitby White. n The Napanee Peewee B Crunch took on the West Northumberland Wild at the SPC on Sunday, falling 3-2. After falling behind 2-0 early, the girls found their game with goals by Amber Weese and Maddy Cronkwright on a fantastic deke to her backhand. Assists went to Rebecca Hannah on the Weese goal and Mackenzie O’Sullivan on the Cronkwright tally. A late goal by the Wild proved to be the game winner in a 3-2 Crunch loss. n The Atom Crunch played a home and home series vs Ennismore over the weekend, sweeping both games. Saturday the Crunch were able to skate away with a solid 8-0 win with Breanna Roy netting her first goal of the season. Back in home territory it was a bit of a different story with a tight first period, finding themselves up by only a goal the Crunch finally were able to pull ahead resulting in a 72 win. Tallying Sunday’s goals were Anna Baker, Lauren Sutton, Hailey Thompson, Roy, Ella Pringle, Leah Carscallen and Saige Pearson. Assists were earned by Roy (two), Nikki Weese, Baker, Sutton , Thompson, Alyssa McMullen, Myla Pearson and Payton Barkley. HAWKS | Girls’ hockey team off to 2-0 start CONTINUED FROM PAGE 19 Napanee’s Grade 11-12 squad is now 0-2 on the year. On the ice the Napanee ladies are a perfect 2-0 to start the hockey season. They opened the year with a 5-0 shutout of Bayridge. They followed that up

with a 5-1 victory over Ernestown on Monday. They host holy Cross next Wednesday. Napanee’s boys hockey team suffered a 4-1 defeat to Frontenac to open their season, their only game played thus far. On the volleyball court

the junior Hawks evened their record at 1-1 with a 32 victory over LCVI on Tuesday. The senior ladies were the inverse, losing 3-2 but did win their first game, sweeping Ernestown in three sets on Dec. 3 to open the season and are also 1-1.

RAIDERS | Rematch in Picton tonight CONTINUED FROM PAGE 19 The Jets have 15 games remaining. Port Hope is third with 29 points and 16 games left. Though they lost some ground this week, Hartwick still considers the team a playoff contender.

GIC • RRSP • RRIF • TFSA

“We got Picton (tonight) and we'll be ready to go against them again,” said Hartwick. “There’s still plenty of games left. Nobody is pushing the panic button. We as a coaching staff believe in our guys in that room and they believe in themselves.”

Following tonight’s game in Picton they are back home on Tuesday to host the Jets at 7:30 p.m. They’ll wrap up 2013 on Dec. 20 in Deseronto. For scoring his first goal with the team, Murray is the Ontario Milk Marketing Board Raider of the week.
