72-hours notice to be given before one-day walkout By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER As of today, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario members in the Limestone District School Board are in a legal strike position and could take part in one of many rotating strikes across different Ontario school boards to protest Bill 115. Here in the Limestone district no strike is planned as of presstime yesterday afternoon. Though the union has promised parents they’ll give 72 hours notice before any one day strike, teachers will continue to demonstrate their displeasure of the bill. “We’ll be starting more or less an administrative work to rule,” said ETFO Limestone Local president Mike Lumb. “That’s kind of what the McGuinty Mondays and Tuesdays have been about over the course of the fall. We won’t be attending school board or system level meetings. In terms of assessments, teachers will just do the assessments they feel in their professional judgement is needed.” All extracurricular activities have been canceled until further notice as well. Known as the Putting Students First Act, Bill 115 stipulates that sick days would be cut from 20 days to 10 days per year, no salary increases will be issued over the next two years and it limits the abilities of teachers’ unions and support staffs to strike. Premier Dalton McGuinty deemed the bill necessary in wake of the province’s growing deficit, now over $14 billion, and on Monday criticized the teachers for their most recent job action. “Today, ETFO has disrupted nine years of labour peace over a disagreement about pay,” McGuinty said in a statement issued Monday. “It’s regrettable that students miss any time learning, and it’s unfortunate that families will need to make alternate arrangements.” He also called the one day legal strikes “inconvenient” but a “small price to pay” to allow for all-day Kindergarten, smaller class sizes and to save 10,000 teaching jobs. “It’s not about pay at all,” Lumb told the Beaver. “We’ve said that over and over and (McGuinty) keeps bringing it back to pay. I really have no idea what earth they’re on…you can’t sit here and say it’s about pay when you’re taking away people’s sick days. That’s what (teachers) are mad about.

Sunday. Napanee OPP responded to a report of a vehicle parked on the shoulder of County Road 2, facing the wrong direction. According to the police report, officers checked the vehicle — which had been left running — and found a man passed out behind the wheel. A 36-year-old man from Centreville was charges with impaired driving and driving with more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

“When you have folks that are trying to get to doctor’s appointments, it’s not like their employer can say just go to the doctor’s appointment and come into work a little late today or leave a little early and go to your doctor’s appointment,� he continued. “The kids have to have somebody in front of them. That’s why we need the sick days.� Also at the heart of the issue, according to Lumb, is the lack of avenues teachers have to protest the bill. Both sides have until Dec. 31 to reach an agreement before the bill gives the government the right to impose a collective bargaining agreement without negotiation. An agreement reached between the government and the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association in July will serve as a guideline for the two sides in terms of pay and benefits. “At one point the premier indicated that if ‘you want to have a fight, then take it to the courts’,� said Lumb. “That would have

been nice, but they prevented us from going to the labour board, they prevented us from going to any courts in Ontario. They prevented us from going to the Human Rights Tribunal. The only place we could really go was the Supreme Court of Canada. It’s our democratic right to do that.� According to Lumb, the teachers’ union has never been more in favour of a strike, citing that 99 per cent of the union voted in favour of one. “This isn’t the union bosses saying this,� said Lumb. “This is what people are voting for. The grass roots teachers are voting for this. I just do what my members tell me to do.� Lumb insists the union wants nothing more than a speedy and fair resolution to the matter. He encouraged members of the public who support their cause to e-mail the premier. If an agreement isn’t reached by Dec. 31 and teachers do strike, Education Minister Laurel Broten has indicated she will use the powers of Bill 115 to order the teachers back into the classroom.

Tips to investing in RRSPs Let's start with an obvious but important question. What is an RRSP? You may know that RRSP stands for Registered Retirement Savings Plan. But it's easy to be confused about what that really means. If you think you buy an RRSP, you wouldn't be the first person to make that mistake. Actually, you buy investments -- mutual funds, stocks, bonds, guaranteed investment certificates, annuities, etc.--and register them with the Federal government. When you retire, you'll be able to use the money that comes from the investments. Is it a good idea to invest in an RRSP? The simple answer is yes. Many people are putting their money in RRSPs because they've been told they can reduce the amount of income tax they pay. They think, "Okay, I'm getting this tax savings every year. It reduces my taxable income, so my overall taxes aren't going to be as high." For a lot of people, that's a good enough reason to contribute to an RRSP. Paying less income tax has always been a good idea. If you're self-employed, you have another reason to invest in an RRSP. It may be the only way to save for retirement, since you probably aren't working at a company that sets up pension plans for its employees. Whatever your reasons, the most important thing you can do as far as investing in RRSPs are concerned is to start contributing regularly as early as possible. When you start early, you give your money more time to grow. Perhaps you're thinking that you don't have $100 to put away every month. Try investing in small doses by setting up a plan where your contributions flow directly from your bank account to your RRSP on the day you're paid. A few dollars now will go a long way later. You'll be surprised at how quickly your RRSP will grow-if you contribute regularly! Nobody's financial situation will be exactly the same as yours. Greater Napanee is hoping local community spirit will go viral and create a buzz around their recently completed lip dub video. Led by the town’s Core Area Advisory Committee and filmed by WJP Media’s Dale Morrisey, the town created a five-minute online video with members of the community dancing and singing along to Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City's ‘Good Time’. “The committee that was working on the project put a lot of time and effort into (the video),” said CAAC co-ordinator Lyndsay Tee. “We’re definitely really pleased with the results and the public seems to like it which is great.” Shooting was done throughout September and October at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital, Springside Park, Strathcona Paper Centre, NDSS, the Fairgrounds and downtown Napanee. Each scene has a different group of people walking while pretending to sing as they look into the camera. “The whole purpose of the video was to create a fun video that showed off how great Greater Napanee is,” said Tee. “It’s about that community enthusiasm and pride we have around town. The group was very proud of the finished project and we feel that we definitely reached that goal.” Prior to each filming day the town used social media as well as traditional media to spread the word for members of the community to show up and dance. Several community groups took up the offer, displaying club banners and showing off their talents. The end credits highlight all the groups that volunteered to be in the video. “At each location the people that participated came out with a full group of people and they were dressed up and enthusiastic and everybody knew the words to the song,” said Tee. “It was really great to see all the different groups

"The song reflects having a great time and we feel that a lot of people in Greater Napanee feel that its a great place to live. It fit well with the atmosphere that we’re trying to show off.” Since posting the video last Wednesday it has been viewed over 800 times, ‘liked’ by 124 people and shared by over 140. Tee is hoping the trend will continue and more users will click the like button and share it. In the 21st century, ‘likes’ are as golden as free advertising. The Ontario government recently released an action plan to protect biodiversity, the variety of life on earth, including species diversity, genetic diversity and ecosystem diversity in the province. The plan, called Biodiversity: It’s in Our Nature, is a 52-page report that outlines the roles and responsibilities for activities in two dozen categories ranging from supporting biodiversity education to reducing urban sprawl. The action plan is based on the work of a 2011 strategy developed by the Ontario Biodiversity Council, where the Ontario Federation of Agriculture has a seat. The OFA thanks the government for showing leadership in developing this strategy, and for recognizing the key role Ontario farmers play in preserving the land, water, plants and animals for future generations.

Refreshing outrage? AST week, federal Conservative House Leader Peter Van Loan got into some hot water when he became embroiled in a heated post-vote argument with his NDP counterpart Nathan Cullen and NDP leader Thomas Mulcair. Some unparliamentary language was exchanged, and, before things could get out of hand, Van Loan had to be taken back to the government benches to cool off. Near fisticuffs in the House of Commons: that place must be going to hell in a handbasket, right? Well, not so fast. We thought the whole thing was, for lack of a better word, refreshing. Some context, first. Van Loan and the rest of the government side of the house had just been put through the procedural wringer by the opposition, primarily the NDP, regarding its omnibus budget bill. The house was forced to vote on dozens and dozens of proposed amendments, tabled by the opposition, over a few days of marathon voting sessions. The Conservatives won every one of those votes.

However, through the midst of it all, the NDP discovered a possible procedural mixup (ironically committed deputy-speaker Joe Comartin, an NDP MP) that they could exploit. The NDP appealed to the speaker on the matter, but the speaker upheld the original vote. So, the Conservatives won that fight, too. Van Loan, however, was none too happy the NDP had attempted such a manoeuver. When voting was done, he headed over to the NDP side of the house to let the NDP house leader know how he felt. The rest is history. So, why was this episode a

good thing? For us, it represented a rare unscripted moment. Van Loan (and, eventually, Cullen and Mulcair) were outraged, and not just for show. Emotions won over talking points. It was real and genuine. Obviously, these kinds of things can’t be condoned. We can’t have MPs invading each other’s personal space, verbally abusing one another or nearly coming to blows.At the same time, we’re all human, including our MPs. It was nice to see good old-fashioned human frailty and emotion make an appearance amid the scripted routine typical of politics today.

Along with growing safe, affordable food and the daily tasks of running a business, taking care of the landscape on the farm is naturally part of a farmer’s job. As such, farmers are uniquely qualified to observe how changes on and near our land affect the wildlife and plant species living on our properties. Biodiversity is important to Ontario farmers, but current legislation meant to protect biodiversity is also a hindrance to many farm businesses. The Endangered Species Act, 2007 governs protection requirements of plants and animals that are identified as “species at risk” in Ontario. Farmers encountering endangered species on the farm can face financial repercussions due to the loss of the use of their farmland. That’s because once a species is considered a Species at Risk, it receives automatic protection for both the species itself, and for its habitat. Biodiversity’s great value to all cannot just be achieved by regulation. An ecological goods and services program that recognizes the true value provided by the agricultural landscape is needed. The OFA has advocated, through our role on the Ontario Biodiversity Council, for an ecosystemspecific approach to wildlife protection, rather than a speciesspecific approach. For example, farmers that are currently required to protect endangered species and the specific habitats such as that of the grasslanddwelling bobolink, would be required instead to protect a grassland ecosystem on the farm, where endangered species such as the bobolink, and other grassland-dwelling birds such as meadowlarks could thrive.

Green grows my Christmas Perhaps the best Yuletide decoration is being wreathed in smiles. ~Author Unknown I love the look and smell of garden retail stores this time of year. Christmas greens, trees and flowers produce a wonderful cocktail of seasonal scents and sights that are unique to this time of year. The gardening business offers a unique opportunity for customers to buy fresh air and natural fragrance in the form of green or flowering plants and an enhanced living environment with fresh cut greens. Here is a guide to the myriad of plants and greens that you will find at your local garden retailers at this time of year. Greens. Growing faster in popularity than iPhones, everyone seems to be using fresh cut greens to create a special, customized look at the front of their home, around the fire place, and elsewhere. Here is the rundown: White Pine. The white pine boughs and wreaths that you find at garden retailers this time of year are an excellent choice for a delicate, evergreen fragrance, and for the softness of the needles. I also like white pine for its ability to hold moisture for long periods of time. A good choice indoors and out. Balsam and Douglas Fir. Nice fragrance, poor needle retention unless it is very fresh at the time of purchase. The short-nee-

dled balsam fir provides a nice fragrance and is not too ‘prickly’ to touch. I prefer the longer needles of the Douglas Fir. Longer foliage retention too. Cedar. The native white cedar is still the favourite for ‘cedar rope’ and it is inexpensive. Great for framing a front doorway, especially when woven with white pine and narrow red ribbon. The ‘B.C.’ cedar is broader, a deeper green, and softer to the touch, when fresh. Boxwood. The fresh boxwood that is used for wreaths, door swags and ‘rope’ is grown in B.C. and Washington State. There is nothing wrong with that, but run your hand over it before you buy. If leaves drop off as you move your hand over the foliage, take a pass on it. If it has good leaf retention, give it a try for a look that differs greatly from that of pine or fir. Magnolia. If you are looking for something outrageous, this is it. The shiny, broad leaves look like something from another place, which they are. They come from Georgia, where they can grow the Southern Magnolia in abundance. A wreath or garland of magnolia will definitely get attention. The price is a bit outrageous too. Secret: here is my secret to keeping evergreen boughs and rope looking fresh and to minimize the fire hazard. Wilt-Pruf®, an anti desiccant that is invisible and odorless is well worth the investment. It insulates the tender foliage from the

drying effects of wind and winter air. Save it for use on your fresh cut Christmas tree before you bring it indoors. Wilt-Pruf® is expensive at $20 a bottle, but well worth the investment. Christmas Flowers The flowers of Christmas are many, but none as popular as the poinsettia. If the idea of having yet another red poinsettia in the house this Christmas sounds pedestrian and boring, try one of the new colours or colour combos. There are some fabulous

white, pink, speckled pink/red [otherwise known as ‘ketchup potato chips’] and of all things yellow specimens that will brighten up your home at Christmas. Keep poinsettias out of drafts from doors and windows, away from heating vents from your furnace, and avoid dark rooms. They really enjoy high light and it is important that you drain off the excess water after applying water to them. They hate having wet feet. At the first sign of yellowing leaves [a sure sign of stress] take the plant out of its water proof sleeve or container and let it drain until the top two centimetres of soil are dry before you water again. Cyclamen are my favourite this time of year. They bloom forever [up to 6 months, anyway] and the

new varieties are widely varied in colour and size. Whatever colour you choose it will be bright and vibrant in such a way that the room that you put it in will light up. The perfect dinner table plant. Cyclamen like to be cool and as such are more tolerant of drafts than poinsettias are. Amaryllis. The giant, chunky bulb that you can buy in bulk at garden centres and the fancy packaged bulbs that you buy most anywhere have one thing in common: both feature a bulb that will produce enormous, trumpet shaped flowers. The main difference, in most cases, is that the bare naked bulb that you buy from a bin is generally much bigger. The rule of thumb is: the bigger the bulb the more impressive the performance. A 22 to 24 cm bulb (measuring the circumference) produces a nice show. A 28 or 30 cm bulb will blow your mind. The size of the bulb is listed on the side of the package or the hang tag around the bulb itself. The beauty of amaryllis is that it is fool proof. Grandchildren? Housewarming gift? Stocking stuffer for someone who has everything? Amaryllis is always a great choice. People have so much fun with this that they often send pictures to my website to show me how happy they are with their Mark’s Choice amaryllis kits. I am always impressed. Paperwhites. I don’t talk about paperwhites too much because I think they stink. Personal bias aside,

they are the easiest thing in the world to grow and they always bloom. Place the small bulbs in a shallow container that does not have drainage holes, with 4 or 5 cm of gravel or pebbles and fill the container with water. Place the bulbs in the container so that the ‘basal plate’ at the bottom of the bulb makes contact with the water. Go away and leave them alone for a couple of weeks [but top up the water as needed] and they will astound and amaze you with their sure-fired growth and lily white flowers. Focusing on the protection of ecosystem or habitat types in lieu of protecting the habitats of individual species would allow for a more holistic way to protect endangered species while still respecting farmers who rely on the use of their land for their livelihood. As the OFA continues to provide input on the important issue of biodiversity, we will continue to support many of the initiatives outlined in the action plan. Ontario’s natural wealth of ecosystem, species and genetic diversity is valuable to all of us, and as farmers we’ll do our part to contribute to its preservation. Ontario farmers can also be assured that OFA will continue to advocate for a balanced approach that delivers the important work of biodiversity preservation with the real need or legislation and programs that enable prosperous and sustainable Ontario farms. Northumberland Forest a good place to hike HERE is a high, rolling hill at the Northumberland Forest, north of Cobourg, called the Hogsback. Essentially, it is just a homoclinal ridge, quite steep actually, as we found when we followed the trail up the leading edge, and walked along this narrow ridge which descended sharply on either side into the ravines below. You may be familiar with cuestas. Almost the same but cuesta slopes are more gentle – the Niagara Escarpment is a good example. As you might expect, a hogsback is named for the ridge resembling the high, knobby area between the shoulders of a hog. When we were in the New England states many years ago, residents there referred to these moraine terraces as horsebacks. The hogsback where we were along one of the trails in the Northumberland Forest led to an elevated area that offered a panoramic view of the terrain below us, and a picnic area from which to enjoy it. The trails here in this over 5,000 acre multi-use forest don’t have names like hiking trails do in provincial parks and conservation areas. They are colour-coded and you simply pick whatever colour you like and follow the markers. It is always best though to do a little research first on the trails as some are only a bit over a kilometer, but a wrong choice

could have you trekking for 13 km., or more. And that’s assuming you don’t inadvertently make a wrong turn as many of the trails cross each other and side trails will link up with other colour coded trails. As well, we found the coloured trail markers spaced rather far apart and it was always a reassuring sight when another marker showed up that indicated we were still on target, and lunch would be on time. We chose the 5 kilometre “green” trail that took us over some interesting habitat, a lot of it reforested, and other areas where logging had just taken place. This forest is managed for harvest, a process which was never intended to reap great profits, but rather, help with the regeneration of pine plantations to mixed forests. The primary objective for the harvest here is forest health, not revenue. Harvests are scheduled outside of the sensitive bird breeding seasons as well as sensitive plant seasons to ensure no negative impacts on the Forest’s physiological processes. We came across one such area where it appeared that harvesting had taken place as recently as this year and were impressed with how little damage had been done to the forest floor and other trees. The limbs were left where they fell and will decompose to become part of the

Outdoor Rambles forest floor. In a very short while, the forest will recover and it will be difficult to see any evidence that a harvest had even taken place. The Northumberland County Forest website explains that prior to European settlement, the Northumberland hills were covered in mixed-hardwood forests with towering beech, maple, hickory and white pines as well as tallgrass prairie and oak savanna. Once discovered, however, the region’s white pine were harvested and sent to Europe for use as ship masts and settlers harvested the trees for building and fuel as well as cleared land for agriculture. The sandy soils here, however, did not support agricul-

ture for long as nutrients were quickly depleted. Erosion and flooding became a growing concern. Appeals from farmers, particularly here on the Oak Ridges Moraine prompted large scale reforestation efforts to stop the erosion and retain precipitation that could cause flooding. Because it was November, we saw little wildlife on our two hour walk, but we could tell that that the habitat we were in had the potential to support species like red-shouldered hawks, wood pewees, red-eyed vireos and possibly hermit thrushes. We also saw evidence that we were not alone. Bear tracks were encountered a couple of times. The forest is also home to remnant Black Oak Savannas. Black Oak Savanna is a very rare habitat in Ontario. Prior to European settlement, there were about 200,000 acres of prairie

and savanna in Southern Ontario. Today, less than two percent of this landscape remains. On a guided hike in mid-October, we were introduced to one of these rare habitats not far from the Forest – the Alderville First Nations Black Oak Savanna. Present to co-lead that hike was one of its founders, Rick Beaver. Next year’s program of Outdoor Events will feature a guided hike in the Northumberland Forest in the fall. I am looking forward to the opportunity of telling everybody about this special area, once I review the trail system again so we don’t get lost! A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 70 Years Ago December 16, 1942 n A manpower shortage in the Canadian Armed Forces had the federal government considering calling up married men to serve in the army. The armed forces reported a decline in recruiting numbers and suggested that they needed to expand the pool of potential servicemen. There was still an ongoing manpower shortage in ‘home front’ industries such as farming, mining and lumbering. Originally, the government had only planned to conscript single men between the ages of 21 and 24. n The federal Conservative Party was undergoing some substantial changes at its national convention. First, the party turned to the premier of Manitoba, John Bracken, to have him serve as the new leader of the party, replacing Arthur Meighen. Bracken had gained a reputation for being able to work with people from different parties during his time as premier in Manitoba. Meanwhile, the party also voted for a name change, dropping ‘National Conservative Party’ for ‘Progressive Conservative Party.’

35 Years Ago December 14, 1977 n Five county councillors announced that they would let their name stand for warden for the 1978 term — including the 1977 warden Ernest Marshall. Marshall was the first sitting warden to run for re-election since the county updated its rules of order. The new rules allowed for wardens to serve multiple terms. Other county councillors who expressed an interest in running were Ian Wilson of Ernestown, Bruce Teskey of Camden East, Douglas Stevenson of Bath and Mack Laybourne of South Fredericksburgh. n Frazil ice along the Salmon River was causing major problems for those living in the Waddingham Valley near Lonsdale. Extremely cold temperatures caused an ice dam, with moving water transformed into a water-stopping slush. As a result, the river came over its banks and flooded nearby homes and farms. One resident said that the water level was rising as quickly as one inch an hour, and that he was forced to evacuate his home.

‘Special’ return for ex-NHLers Former stars put on a show at SPC for a good cause By Seth DuChene EDITOR With the National Hockey League on a prolonged hiatus, the appearance of some NHL alumni at the Strathcona Paper Centre last Thursday night couldn’t have come at a better time. Former players such as Marty McSorley, Mike Krushelnyski and Brent Gretzky laced ‘em up to take on a team of law enforcement officers in front of a nearly-full house at the Goodyear rink. Their goal — other than to score goals — was to raise money for Special Olympics. When it was all over, organizers estimated that around $3,700 was raised for the cause. “I think it was a fantastic night,” said Constable Stacey Cooper, community services officer for the Napanee OPP detachment. “I didn’t expect the stands to be packed, and they were packed. Our officers were gung-ho and keen to play.” She said that the money will go to the provincial Special Olympics, with a portion of the funds being redirected to the Lennox and Addington Special Olympics chapter. Boschman admitted that he doesn’t play in many alumni games, so getting back on the ice with his fellow ex-NHLers was a pleasure. “Some of the guys do a lot more than I do. I just do a few of them,” he said. “It’s nice to get caught up with the guys, figure out where they are and what they’re doing.” Former Leaf and Senator Brad Marsh — who broke with tradition and wore a helmet during the charity game — echoed Boschman’s sentiments. “It’s always fun. It’s fun to see the guys. You can go years without seeing them, so it’s always good to see them again.” Like Boschman, Marsh doesn’t participate in many alumni games. “I don’t play a heck of a lot. I only play a couple times a year. It’s fun, when I get an opportunity to come out and play. I enjoy it. There’s always a lot of good laughs and a lot of good stories,” he said. “It’s always good to play against other hockey players, because we all have the same thing in common: we like the game of hockey,” Marsh continued. “In the end, it’s always great to do something for charity, and it was great to see a good crowd here tonight. It was an awesome night.”

Former Leaf runs NDSS hockey practice Alyn McCauley puts Hawks through paces By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER Students of NDSS’ Hockey Canada Skills Academy course were schooled by a professional on Wednesday, as former NHLer Alyn McCauley stepped onto the SPC rink to run the class. The ex-Maple Leaf, Shark and King agreed to run some drills for the coed Grade 11/12 class as a favour to co-op teacher Matt Campeau, whose son plays on McCauley’s son’s minor hockey team. Armed with a white board, skates and a stick, McCauley looked right at home while organizing the drills. “I don’t have a lot of experience with either running a practice or coaching a whole lot,” said McCauley. “I coached one year at Queen’s about five years ago. Of course, I’ve been involved with many practices before (as a player) but I haven’t had the opportunity to get out with any high schools.” Unsure of what he was getting into before agreeing to the gig, McCauley was all smiles while out on the Home Hardware rink ice. “It was fun,” he said. “I

wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of skill level. Certainly there was one girl out there I took notice of that had great overall ability and an ability to receive a pass that was in behind her by three or four feet. It was a great group of kids. They listen quite well and I’m surprised the drills didn’t have more mistakes or hiccups.” McCauley says he doesn’t get out on the ice very often these days. His promising pro career was derailed by concussions and a knee injury, causing him to retire at age 30 in 2007. Recurring concussions kept him from regaining his scoring prowess of his junior career, though he did score 20 goals and added 27 assists in 2003-04 with the Sharks. He finished with 69 goals and 97 assists in 488 regular season games. He’s perhaps best known from his Leaf days as being involved in the Owen Nolan deal in 2003. Since hanging up his skates he’s taken on a pro scouting role with the Los Angeles Kings. Jim McKinney, who regularly teaches the class, jumped at the opportunity to have a retired NHL play-

er run the show for a day. He’s always looking for ways to break out of the regular routine of the class. “Essentially what we’re doing here is we’re running a Phys. Ed. class out of the rink,” said McKinney, noting that its sanctioned by Hockey Canada. “These kids have about 60 hours of ice time and about 40 in the weight room. It’s a fantastic opportunity for 25 kids to get a Grade 11/12 Phys. Ed. credit while playing hockey.” When he first told the class that McCauley would be their special guest, he says the students were eager to see him put on a skills competition type show. Instead they were surprised to learn he’d be running drills, talking with them one-on-one and displaying no ego at all. “It’s just a real treat to have someone local who has had some obvious experience to come out and share those experiences,” said McKinney. “Just the 10 minutes in the dressing room was valuable, let alone being out on the ice.” Even though some of the students may have only been 12 or 13 when McCauley retired, they did their homework. “The boys had him all looked up,” said McKinney. “They knew his career stats, they knew his junior stats. They knew how lucky they were today.” McCauley enjoyed the experience so much he left open the possibility returning for more classes in the future. In the meantime he’s hoping he can go back scouting NHL games as soon as possible. With the lockout dragging on, he’s been busy evaluating AHL players. “I'm as anxious as anybody for the CBA to get signed,” McCauley added.

OPP begin holiday lookout for drunk drivers As Festive RIDE season arrives, police warn motorists to stay sober behind the wheel By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER OLIDAY partygoers beware: OPP sobriety check points will be popping up anytime and anywhere this festive season. Some drivers already had a taste of what’s to come, as this past Thursday members of the Napanee OPP set up a RIDE (Reducing Impaired Driving Everywhere) checkpoint at the corner of Camden Road and Industrial Avenue at 1:30 p.m. “We do them at all times of the day,� said Napanee OPP Constable Jackie Perry. “It used to be we’d focus on evenings when people would be out drinking, specifically after parties. One of the biggest things we’ve found since we've been doing them in the morning is a lot of people are up late, drinking until 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. in the morning. They sleep until 7 a.m. or 8 a.m. and then think they’re OK to drive. We get people at 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. still quite impaired.� Many times drivers figure they’re alright to drive home after a short nap on the couch. The fact is, driving tired with an elevated blood alcohol is just as dangerous. “You need basically an hour per drink to clear the

alcohol from your system,� said Perry. “That would be one beer or one shot, or one spirit, or a glass of wine. They’re equivalent to each other.� Aside from the obvious risks of a potential accident, Perry says impaired drivers are gambling on the fact that they could face hefty fines, demerit points, losing their license and even jail time. “We don’t just focus on the main highways,� said Perry. “We’re setting up on a lot of the back roads now. We may only see two or three cars in an hour, but we get people. If you think you’re going to take the back roads, I would say think again.� While it may be an inconvenience for those obeying the rules and driving sober, it’s worth the wait. Icy conditions mixed with the number of holiday parties this time of year is a recipe for disaster. Last year the OPP removed 1,203 impaired drivers off Ontario roads between Nov. 25 and Jan. 1. As for drivers who spot other motorists driving erratically, Perry encourages them to call in and report it. “Our goal is to prevent needless tragedies on the roads, especially at Christmas time,� she said. “Impaired driving is 100 per cent preventable. The community is our eyes and ears.

Raiders score only the ‘bear’ necessities in 3-1 loss Jets goalie James D’Andrea is outstanding, securing important victory for Amherstview By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER SPORTS att Horton scored the magic goal to cue a shower of teddy bears at the Strathcona Paper Centre on Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough for a win as the Napanee Raiders fell 3-1 to the Amherstview Jets. Luckily one goal was all that was required to prompt fans to toss stuffed bears onto the ice, which will be donated to local children in need this holiday season. Despite ample chances throughout the game, Napanee was stone walled by James D'Andrea all night, who made over 50 saves. At the other end of the ice Raider keeper Kyle Copeland was almost as good, stopping 45. Despite Napanee’s 125 lead in the shot count, Amherstview’s Brett Elder drew first blood midway through the first. The score remained 1-1 into the third, when the Jets went

up for good with 11:24 left to go. Napanee had ample chances to at least tie, as Luke Emmons rang a shot off the post and Adam Shulist rifled a shot from the point but was denied. The Jets’ Jake Hulton added an insurance tally in the final minutes to seal it. “It’s just those small little mistakes that are still costing us,” said Raiders head coach Scott Slack. “Maybe it’s not quite clearing the puck or a small turn over in the neutral zone that comes back in and trickles in.” Despite not much to show on the scoresheet, Slack was pleased that his team did out-chance their opponents. “You figure something’s going to find the back of the net and a lot of nights it does,” said Slack. “I think both goaltenders answered the bell tonight.” While they’d much prefer a win, the Raiders took some solace out of at least scoring a goal to allow fans to toss the teddies during

the game. Prior to the game they were all itching to be the one who set off the festivities. “I know (Bud) Norris wanted it and (Ryan) Thistlethwaite said he was going to get it,” said Slack. “All four lines had a shot at it. They gave it to Horton, but (Jayden) Adams and him didn’t know who touched it because both their sticks went after it at the same time. They each get a point for it no matter what so it's all good.” The loss was Napanee’s second straight frustrating one, as they took a 4-3 defeat on the road Friday in Campbellford. Norris was a one man wrecking crew for Napanee, scoring all three goals, two while short-handed in a span of 36 seconds in the third. Evan Brown assisted both shorties while Shulist helped on the first. Copeland took the loss, stopping 32 of 36 shots. Unfortunately for Napanee a close game means nothing in the standings.

Work to rule halts Storm blanked by Picton Pirates KASSAA season Deseronto’s home ice woes persist in Friday’s 10-0 defeat All games postponed for now BEAVER STAFF ocal high school student-athletes felt the sting of Bill 115 work to rule actions on Monday, as it was announced that all school sports would be postponed indefinitely. The Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association issued the statement on their website, citing an inability to run their programs as teachers withdraw from extracurricular activities. Until an agreement has been reached, all winter sports have been postponed, including NDSS’ annual Hawks Invitational girls’ hockey tournament, which was scheduled for yesterday. The tournament draws in schools from both the KASSAA and Hastings area. Limestone District coaches and athletic directors have been told to offer no comment on the issue to the media by their union.

Students were warned in September that their season could be halted at any time, as the teachers’ union encouraged teachers to cut back on extracurricular activities. As long as it was left up to the teachers KASSAA continued until this past Monday when the union made it mandatory for all teachers to halt after school sports. This past September over 100 NDSS students marched out of class to MPP Randy Hillier and MP Scott Reid’s office on Centre Street to show their support for the teachers. It’s not yet known if the games will be made up in 2013 or if the sports will resort to shorter seasons. Currently affected are hockey, girls’ volleyball, boys’ basketball, curling, badminton and alpine skiing. KASSAA isn’t the only league affected, as all schools across Ontario are expected to postpone afterschool sports.

Geoff Cleminson lead the charge for the Pirates, scoring three times, twice in the first period. He entered the game with just two goals 20 games played. Deseronto stayed relatively close in the first period, trailing 3-0 after 20 minutes. The floodgates were kicked open in the second as Picton scored six times in less than 12 minutes. Adam Wood got the shutout, his first of the season. The rookie net minder continues to state his case for claiming the league’s top goaltender award, improving to 12-3-1 on the year with a 2.22 GAA. Although the Storm gave Picton only five power-plays, they converted four of them. The first place Pirates now have 26

The Storm now hold the unwanted distinction of being the first Empire B League team to be blanked on the season. The Storm will head to Picton this evening for a rematch before returning home to host the Raiders at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow.

It was a huge game for the AEs, taking a 3-2 win against a team that has lost only two all season. With 4:32 left in the third and a 2-2 tie, team captain and defenseman, Ben Huyck channelled his inner Bobby Orr once again and rushed the puck up the ice to earn the winning goal. Outstanding goaltending by Nathaniel Cinnamon and Jacob Brown was a huge contributing factor to the win. Earlier goals were scored by Spencer Cranley and Gavin Brooks, with assists to Jack Madden and Dawson Wales. The Stars are solidly in fifth in the 13 team Lakeshore AE league. On Sunday the AEs visited Tweed for an exhibition game, and won 4-0. Goal scorers were Cranley (two), Ben Huyck, and Aiden Haller-Brady. Assists went to Cranley and Ben Buxton. Brown and Cinnamon shared the shutout. n Cobourg was the site for the Napanee North Key Minor Atom team on Friday. The first two periods gave Cobourg a 2-0 lead, but that didn’t discourage

Persistence paid off for Josh Reid with the second goal, assisted by teammates Connor Brooks and Isaac Uens. Corbin Gibson, Kyle Garrett, Josh Cudd, Carter Hunt (two), Vos (three), and Burger added assists. n The Napanee Peewee AE Stars fought hard but just couldn’t put enough pucks in the net at the Regional Silver Stick Tournament in Georgina on the weekend. Though the Stars left Georgina with a disappointing 0-3 record, it could hardly be said that the weekend was a disappointment. Even against some of the toughest teams in the province, the Stars showed flashes of brilliance. In Game 1, facing Lakeshore League rival Oshawa, the Stars erased an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game 2-2 heading into the third. A pair of beautiful shorthanded goals — one by Cal DuChene and one by Kiel Benton — made things interesting against the Minor Generals, a team that has given the Stars fits this season. The Generals managed to keep their win streak alive, barely, when they netted the go-ahead goal in the third. Netminder Nolan Hatch played well enough to win, but was stuck with the loss. DuChene picked up the team MVP award for the game. In the next two games, Hatch and fellow goalie Cole East were stellar, in spite of what the scores might say against a pair of tough York-Simcoe teams. East kept the Richmond Hill Stars at bay for nearly half the game — including a fantastic penalty shot stop — before Richmond Hill found a way to turn their many shots on net into goals. The game finished 5-0 for Richmond Hill, but East picked up the game MVP award for his outstanding effort. It was a similar story when Hatch and the Stars faced an extremely strong Georgina Blaze team; Hatch was peppered with 37 shots, and had to make some spectacular saves just to keep it to a 5-0 loss. Not surprisingly, Hatch took game MVP honours. n The Exit Realty Minor Midget Stars faced off with Port Perry at home on Friday in what proved to be an aggressive rematch from their mid-November meeting. Penalties were assessed at will, with the Stars playing short-handed for 34 minutes of the 45minute game and this was reflected in the outcomean 8-1 loss. Hudson Sheffield scored the lone goal. Saturday they struggled on the road in a 4-1 loss to Whitby. Defenceman Haaken Zatterberg scored the lone goal on a setup from Michel Samson and Sheffield.

Napanee Union Lodge No. 9 publishes history By Seth DuChene EDITOR After 200 years, Napanee’s Masonic Union Lodge No. 9 has plenty of history — and now all that history can be found in one spot. This week, the lodge published Union Lodge No. 9: A Historical Review (and then some), compiled and written by lodge historian Ernie Doughty. The book arrives as the lodge celebrates its bicentennial. Doughty says that other lodges in the province have produced similar books when they’ve reached milestone years. That said, it

Book printed in conjunction with local masonic lodge’s 200th anniversary research, Doughty poured over old documents, from lodge minute books (5055 pages worth to be exact) to microfiched newspaper articles. “I was able to find minute books dating back to the 1850s, and I read all of them,” he said. “The minute books gave me a tremendous amount of insight into the history of our lodge and the history of the town of Napanee.” Doughty also discovered several letters written by lodge members serving overseas. In one case, a soldier in First World War

was a first for Doughty himself. “I’ve never done one of these before,” he said. And, indeed, he had no intention of writing a book when he started digging about eight years ago. “It was just an interest thing on my part. I started reading information that had been compiled by other historians in the lodge,” he said. “I was just doing it for fun, but as we saw the bicentennial coming along, we thought it might be worthwhile putting it into a book.” During his years of

received a summons to attend a lodge meeting; he sent it back to the lodge with not saying he wouldn’t be attending. Another letter came from Herbert Shorey Baker, one of two lodge members who didn’t return from the Great War. Doughty said he found these letters particularly interesting, and has included a few of them in the book. “These were stories that were written right in the trenches,” he said. Although much of the lodge’s history is now in the new book, the original documents which provided the much of the material for the book have found a new home as well. Before Doughty began his research, the documents were simply stored in tin boxes in the upstairs por-

tion of the lodge building on Bridge Street. Doughty learned a lesson from history: these documents need to be kept safe, or they could be lost forever. “The minute books prior to (the 1850s) were destroyed in a fire when the lodge was located in the A.B. Dunning building, which is where Mayhew Jewellers is now,” said Doughty. “All the minute books from back before (the fire) disappeared. I imagine they were burned. I didn’t want that to happen to the happen to the records that we have.” The records have been safely relocated to the Lennox and Addington Museum and Archives. When asked whether he’d been given any positive feedback on the book — which was dedicated to the

memory of former member Bill Finlay — Doughty replied that, as yet, the vast majority of members hadn’t seen it. Those members who have seen it, however, have given it a thumbs-up. “We’re really pleased with the way it all turned out.” Doughty even has fodder for more historical writing and investigation if he chooses. Although he does discuss W.S. Herrington, the only Union No. 9 member to serve as the Grand Master of Ontario in 193233, he admits the treatment is limited. “There is a lot more to be said and a lot more to be delved into, but I just haven’t had more time to do it.” Those interested in obtaining a copy of the book (cost is $25) should contact Doughty directly at 3549509.

Challenge Program students aim to boost Jumpstart charity BEAVER STAFF Allison Hannah and Megan McKee are Grade 8 students of the Challenge Program at Odessa Public School and are active members of the community as players of the Napanee Crunch Bantam B girls hockey team. Together, the girls are working on their ‘Challenge for Change’ project. Challenge for Change is a project that teaches students new strategies in order to make a change in their community and how to put that change into action. The students say they are inspired by people who have found their own ways to make their community a better place. In the end, the hope is that these experiences will result in the students continuing to make the world a better place as they grow up. McKee and Hannah love their sports so it seems fitting that they have decided to partner with the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program. Jumpstart is a national charitable program that helps financially disadvantaged kids participate in organized sport and recreation. The girls say they realize that not everyone has the same opportunity as they do and they want to change that. As part of their project, the girls recently hosted two free skate events where they collected Canadian Tire money to support their initiative. Children from their school and the local community came out to skate in exchange for any Canadian Tire money they wished to donate. Marc Wolvin, Regional Manager, Eastern and Northern Ontario, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, was able to provide support to the girls with the tools they needed to host the two events. “Canadian Tire Jumpstart is so pleased to be part of Allison and Megan’s unique community building experience that is bringing together residents, town officials and resources, and natural partners like us in the Greater Napanee and the Tamworth areas.” He said that Jumpstart invests in communities by providing financial support for sport and recreation to families that need it the

most, and in helping build affordable recreation programs that all children can participate in. “In addition to funds raised nationally and distributed in the region, every dollar raised in a community is reinvested in the community,” he said. “We are proud to report that since 2006, we have helped over 230 local kids ‘get in the game’ with funding of over $36,000. He also said that Tom Zywot, dealer at the Canadian Tire store in Napanee will ‘double match’ Megan and Allison’s donation. Hannah and McKee thanked the Town of Greater Napanee and the Strathcona Paper Centre, as well as, the Township of Stone Mills and the Stone Mills Recreation Centre in Tamworth for their support and for generously donating the ice time for the two events.
