Doctor shortage should be addressed: Mayor BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Greater Napanee Mayor Gord Schermerhorn said a shortage of doctors should be a top concern for Greater Napanee, especially since the community has an aging population. “I’ve come to find out now that if you want a doctor you have to put your name on a list… and I understand there is quite a list,” Schermerhorn said Tuesday during a regular council meeting. He said an elderly couple in their mid 80s told him how difficult it has been for them to find a family doctor and after asking around he realized many people in Greater Napanee are in the same boat. “I did a lot of phoning around today for these people to try to get a handle on the situation and I’ve come to find out they have a big waiting list for people. Some of them in their 80s that need health care are now going to emergency at the hospital to get care. It is a concern of mine when we have so many seniors in our

community looking for doctors,” said Schermerhorn. In order to acquire a family doctor, one must be put on a wait list through Health Care Connect; however, there is no guarantee for a doctor. Priority is given to those with immediate health concerns but a shortage in doctors has left many without a family doctor. “I come to find out today that we have more of a problem, maybe, than what we realize,” said Schermerhorn, suggesting money be set aside in the budget to attract more doctors to Greater Napanee, adding that two doctors recently left Greater Napanee. “It’s a shame when you get to be 84 or 85 years old that you can’t go to a doctor for your health care,” he said. “Something is not right here and it needs to be addressed in 2016,” Ward 5 Councillor Shaune Lucas added. Schermerhorn asked James Timlin, Manger of Community and Corporate Services, to bring a report to council by spring 2016 detailing how many people are on a wait list and any other information he can find relating to

doctor shortages in Greater Napanee and the province. “I think it’s a growing problem,” Schermerhorn said. “I do know that the province is trying to do something with doctors’ salaries and I understand there’s a problem with that.” According to Statistics Canada, one in five middleaged Canadians are without a family doctor, and those statistics are higher for young adults. In 2010, 4.4 million people, or 15 per cent of those aged 12 and older, did not have a medical doctor, according to a Stats Can report. Those numbers increase to 27 per cent for those between the ages of 20 and 34, and decreases to five per cent for seniors. Also according to Stats Can, over half of those without a doctor in 2010 were unsuccessful in their attempts to find one. From the 53 per cent who attempted to find a doctor, 27 per cent were told there were no doctors available in their area. Over 30 per cent of those without a doctor were left without care after their current family doctor had retired.

Stone Mills Township

New economic development committee established BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

Stone Mills Township will create a new economic development committee in the coming weeks. At its regular meeting earlier this month, council endorsed a recommendation from township Chief Administrative Officer Bryan Brooks that would see the creation of a new six-member economic development group. That group would engage township residents

in order to create an economic development strategy moving forward; having that strategy in place would also make any grant application for provincial rural economic development funding more likely to be approved. Brooks will sit on the new committee, as would Tamworth/Erinsville Community Development Committee chair Mark Oliver. Other community members would be selected to round out the group, with one member coming from New-

burgh, one from Camden East, one from Yarker/Colebrook and one from Centreville/Enterprise. Brooks said that the project team would hold four different town hall meetings in four different locations around the municipality. He said that he hoped to have those meetings held in January. “From those (meetings), we would look, as part of the project team, to bring back recommendations to council, whatever they may be, for some identified projects and

some direction for council consideration as part of the 2016, or even beyond, economic development activity for the municipality,” Brooks said. He said that while he didn’t want to “go into this with the preconceived notion that we’re making a RED fund application,” he did say that any legwork completed by the committee would go a long way to making any application more likely to be approved.

Brooks said there are other public and private sources of funding that might be accessed as well. “I really want to grab the coattails of the committee members and ride along and become better familiar with what their priorities are and help them facilitate a discussion and recommendation back to council,” said Brooks. He told council that there has already been interest expressed from

individuals in the community. “We’ve probably had more interest than we’d be able to accommodate on the project team,” he said, but added that those who aren’t asked to join the committee can still provide valuable input. “The intent is that they’re contributing to their sessions or various sessions to spark that interest in various communities.” Council was unanimous in supporting the recommendation.

Fire department holds toy drive

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Adam Prudhomme-Staff

Napanee Raider goalie Tomo Mikuljan helps to gather stuffed animals that were tossed on the ice during the team’s annual Teddy Bear Toss game on Sunday. Fans chucked the toys onto the ice following Napanee’s first goal; the toys were then donated to Greater Napanee Emergency Services’ toy drive.

Despite not having its fundraising calendars out yet, Greater Napanee Fire Services will be purchasing Christmas gifts for nearly 40 local children thanks to sponsors and community donations. Kevin Duncan, GNFS prevention officer, said the department wasn’t going to let a delay in the printing of the calendars set back its contribution to bringing Christmas to local kids. “We haven’t had our calendars out yet, unfortunately, and that’s a big part of (our fundraising) but all the sponsorships are in place for it and it’s paid for so we do have enough funds in place,” he said. “We’ve collected a few donations; we have quite a few toys here already and we’ve had monetary donations this year as well. We’re pretty lucky that way.” Duncan said it if

weren’t for local support and donations, the initiative would not have been possible this year. Gifts were purchased last night with the approximately $4,300 the department has raised though sponsorships and donations. Today they are organizing the gifts, which will then be sent to the Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Family and Children’s Services to be distributed. “I told Family and Children Services that if they give us 39 or 40 now and if we end up in a week or so getting a good donation from somewhere or if we get the calendars out then we might be able to do more,” said Duncan. In the past, the department has been able to purchase as many as 70 gifts for local children. Duncan recently became a Family and Children Services board member, which allows him to see more closely what the needs are in Greater Napanee. “They’re doing good

On top of local gifts, the department is shopping and providing food baskets to six local families through the Salvation Army. “What’s nice about doing the baskets is the Salvation Army allows us to deliver them to the families. Referendum before reform E aren’t opposed to the idea of electoral reform in Canada — we think it’s a good idea to look at improving the way in which we elect our federal politicians — and we generally support Prime Minister’ Justin Trudeau’s (to date) ambitious approach on the issue. However, the path laid out thus far needs a re-think. It’s true Trudeau promised that this most recent election would be the last federal election using the ‘first past the post’ system. And, ultimately, he might be right. However, we believe that before we get to that point, the question has to be put directly to the Canadian people in the form of robust and meaningful public consultation and a referendum to select which option is best. Further, one of those available options should be the status quo. Interestingly, one of the voices advising Trudeau and the Liberal government to slow down and hold a referendum on the question is this area’s former MP, Conservative Scott Reid. Reid is sponsoring a petition that would require a national referendum on any electoral reforms. Reid told iPolitics this week that he’s worried that the Liberal government will move forward with a reform package that “would be to their advantage.” He also said that winning a majority government isn’t enough of a mandate to move forward with such a significant electoral reform without going directly to the people of Canada first. We don’t know whether or not the Liberals will try to ‘game the system’ for their advantage. We do know that whatever reforms are enacted, it will have to be done in a fair, transparent and comprehensive fashion. So far, the governing Liberals haven’t expanded much on their plans to reform the electoral system. But it’s interesting that voices on both the left and right sides of the political spectrum are calling on the Liberals to hold a referendum. Although these matters can get bogged down in endless debates, we think it’s possible to come up with meaningful process, including a federal referendum. And whatever question is put to the public, the status quo should be one of the available options. But if the Liberals want to get this done in time for the next election, they shouldn’t drag their feet too long. We shouldn’t be afraid of having this debate, but we should make sure we do it right the first time.

Letter to the Editor

A green Christmas to remember There is a lot of talk about the warm weather that we are having. Most likely we will not have snow for Christmas, and of course that bring on a lot of talk about climate change. I have seen a lot of winters and Christmases come and go, so I would like to tell you about the Christmas of 1994. That is the year that our only grandson Scott was born on Dec. 23. Scott had two older sisters (Jessie, 3, and Heather, 4) waiting for him. While Scott was being born, the girls had to stay with Grandma and Grandpa. That meant that they would be with their grandparents on Christmas morning. That really worried Heather — how was Santa Claus going to know where she was? That was before the days of cellphones, and it was too late to send a letter to the North Pole. Grandma suggested we would get a dozen big brown paper bags, put some sand in them, light candles in them and then line them up on each side of the driveway. This, no doubt, would look like a landing strip to Santa

Vi s i t

as he flew by on Christmas Eve. Next morning, Heather was delighted. The trick had worked, and there were all kinds of presents for her and Jessie under the tree. As the morning progressed, the presents were unwrapped and played with. It turned into a beautiful day outside; the sun was shining and it was warm for the time of year. The girls and I decided to get some fresh air and we went for a walk down our farm lane. When we got to the south side of the hill, low and behold, on Christmas Day, there were all these dandelions in bloom. The girls each picked a bouquet of dandelions for Grandma. When we got home, I made a sign that said ‘Christmas 1994’. The girls sat on each end of the sign with their flowers in the green lawn and I took their picture. Sorry to say, up to now we have not been able to find it. (No doubt it will show up on some hot day in July.) So now about climate change. When I see pictures

of the traffic in Toronto that goes on 24/7, and with the same thing happening in all the other cities in the world, I would suggest if all these people would trade their vehicles for bicycles, this would do more to reduce carbon emissions than all the other ‘bandage’ solutions we have come up with to date. You might think this is very ridiculous, but it is no more ridiculous than the scientists who think that farmers should stop their cows from burping and farting to greatly reduce methane emissions. We are told in the negotiations there have to be tradeoffs. My tradeoff will be if all the scientists and city folk trade their cars for bicycles. Then, I will see if I can get my cows to stop burping and farting. In the meantime, I am going to sleep well. And if it is nice on Christmas Day, I am going to walk back down the lane to see if there are dandelions blooming on the south side of the hill. John Sonneveld, Greater Napanee

Newburgh Christmas Concert benefits many We wanted to drop a line to express our deep appreciation to all the people who attended the 36th annual Community Christmas Concert on Dec. 5 in Newburgh. We had two full houses and people were overwhelming with their support. We were so grateful to live in this giving community when the money was counted and we collected $11,350 in donations. We have shopped for 130 children and their families who live in our community and expect to be assisting another 20, at least, in the coming weeks. This Christmas, all these children will come down the stairs to see lots of presents under the tree including new PJs, a set of clothing, new socks, underwear, hats and mitts and toys and gifts picked out especially for them. It would not be possible to guarantee that every cent donated would go to the children if not for the generosity of local businesses like McKeown and Wood Fuels, Battlefield Equipment Napanee, King Sound Equipment, Lennox Community Theatre and the many businesses who supply Santa’s goodies to the children when Santa visits at the show. Thanks as well to the staff of Newburgh Public School who are so accommodating, and to Limestone School Board who continue to support our community

Staying connected from home OOKRIOT, a popular blog about books and reading, recently featured an article by a woman who wanted to remain ‘connected’ to the world of books in spite of a debilitating illness that made it difficult for her to leave the house. This meant no libraries, no bookstores and no book club. With the advent of e-books (including free e-books from the library) and speedy home book delivery from online retailers, one is never truly at a loss for accessing books. But obtaining books is perhaps not the biggest challenge for those confined to their homes. “For bookworms who are unable to leave their house, it can often feel lonely, especially if you, like many readers, feel energized by being around books and talking to others about them,” the author wrote. Being homebound does not have to be isolating for readers, especially not in the age of the Internet and expanded library outreach services. Here are some great ways for the homebound the community to access books, library services and venues for interaction with fellow “book people”.

B

The Library Can Come to You! If you can’t come to the library, many library systems (including the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries) can come to you. Outreach services can match library staff or vol-

unteers with patrons who have limited mobility, illness, or are temporarily homebound. For example, a volunteer from Lennox and Addington Seniors Outreach Services delivers library books to the Town of Greater Napanee patrons who cannot travel to the library. We also offer a ‘books by mail’

Catherine Coles Coles’ Notes service for the homebound. Library staff are connected to the pulse of your community’s reading interests, so it can be uplifting to talk about what is popular right now. For more information on ‘Among Friends’ SOS library book delivery, contact the Napanee Branch at 613.354.2525 and for more information on ‘books by mail’ contact Julie Wendland, Readers’ Services Coordinator at 613.354.4883 ex. 3371. Online Book Discussion Groups

reads by monthly theme. Podcasts and Book Tubers Podcasts, downloadable or streamable audio programs that are released in installments, offer plenty of great book chatter. BookRiot.com is a great source, as is the CBC. ‘Book Tubers’ is a term grown out of book-themed YouTube channels. Video book reviews, rants, insights, lists, and more can be found on YouTube. As with podcasts, these channels can help the homebound feel up-to-date with book talk, introduce readers to new books and engage bookworms worldwide in discussion. Just because you or someone you care about is unable to leave the house does not mean the ‘bookish world’ is out of reach entirely. Being homebound might limit your ability to get out and about, but it definitely doesn’t have to limit your ability to take part of conversations with fellow bookworms, connect to your community, and interact with like-minded readers from all across the world. Through the library and the internet, there’s never been a better time to be immersed with the reading world without ever having to leave your home.

There are online book clubs for every genre and subgenre you can imagine on Goodreads (www.good reads.com). Whatever your reading preference, there are other readers who share it — and they are online Catherine Coles is the Manager of right now talking about it! The County of L&A Libraries also has an online Library Services for Lennox and book club via Goodreads, one which Addington County.

n After the town’s dog catcher was criticized in a letter, a least one member of Napanee council came to his defence. The letter complained that 20 dogs were seen running loose on Bridge Street. Deputyreeve W.R. Douglas said, however, that the town’s loose dogs had become wary of the dog catcher, and had found ways to elude him. “They know him too well,” he said. He also said that the dogs’ owners had a tendency to collect the dogs when the dog catcher patrols by, then let them out again after he’s left. The dogcatcher had only caught two dogs in the past month. n Napanee council voted to give the Napanee and District Jaycees $200 after the organization went into deficit in organizing the annual Santa Claus Parade. The town had originally agreed to contribute $100, but cost overruns prompted the Jaycees to return to council for some assistance in paying the bill. Town Reeve Knight said the town should contribute since it was an “excellent parade” that was well received by residents.

n Jack Kippen, the deputy-reeve of Ernestown Township, took over the Lennox and Addington County warden’s chair for the 1981 term. Kippen was elected as warden by his county council colleagues, replacing outgoing warden Bill Huffman. Kippen narrowly edged out the only other candidate in the race, Adolphustown Reeve Harold Allison. He said the biggest problem facing the county was inflation, and the steady increase of wages and prices. n Ault Foods of Napanee fared very well at the recent Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. The company won the second-highest overall award for its cheese entries at the fair. Ault placed first in two sections and third in another. The cheeses were made by Don Sherrow and entered by cheese finisher Cecil Simpson. “We enter every year,” said Simpson. “This is the best we’ve done in the last three or four years.” When the cheeses are finished, they weigh 40 pounds and are wrapped to look as attractive as possible.

Battle of the Bands goes tonight at NDSS BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Up-and-coming musicians will battle it out tonight to see who performs best at a Battle of the Bands competition at Napanee District Secondary School. Tonight’s event is put on by the Let’s Make a Demo program at NDSS, and will consist of at least six student bands. Let’s Make a Demo students organized the event themselves, including promotions, lighting, performing and everything in between. “This is our big class

project where we have people on promotion, people on sound, people on lights, but we’re all in different bands and we’re all hosting it. We all perform original works and covers by our favourite artists,” said Courtney Kane, a Let’s Make a Demo student working on promotions. “Some are doing blues, others are doing rock, some country. It’s a variety of different music,” added Landon Zwaagstra, another student working on promotions. “Some people have been trying to write new music for the event or try to make it new and improved. We’ve been rehearsing songs, cov-

ers and our songs we’ve written in the past.” This semester’s Let’s Make a Demo is made up of students from NDSS, Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute, La Salle Secondary School, Sydenham Public School, Ernestown Secondary School, Bayridge Secondary School and Frontenac Secondary School. The Let’s Make A Demo focus program is designed to prepare students for the music industry. The Battle of the Bands competition will start at 7 p.m. at NDSS, doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Kingston man arrested for impaired driving on Hwy. 401

Beaver Staff

As an incident last week shows, impaired driving doesn’t necessarily require alcohol. On Thursday, an officer with the Loyalist OPP detachment was dispatched to investigate a driving complaint on Highway 401 eastbound in Loyalist Township. While the officer was on the way to the call the OPP Communications Centre

received two more calls on the suspect vehicle, describing it as being “all over the road.” The officer was able to stop the vehicle, a red Kia Soul, and after investigating called for an OPP Standard Field Sobriety Testing officer to perform tests on the driver. As a result of failing the tests, the driver was arrested for impaired driving and was turned over to an OPP Drug Recognition Expert officer for

further tests. After completing the tests on the driver the DRE concluded the driver was impaired by drugs. A urine sample was taken from the driver as well. Charged with driving while impaired by drugs is a 23-year-old man from Kingston. He was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to be in provincial court in Napanee on Feb. 16.

The public is advised that County of Lennox and Addington By-Law No. 2697/98 regulates and requires the removal of items obstructing, encumbering, injuring or fouling County roads and bridges. The parking of vehicles, depositing of snow and discharging of sumps on County roads and bridges during winter months are examples of actions prohibited under this by-law. Section 181 of the Highway Traffic Act further prohibits the deposit of snow and ice on a roadway. Vehicles parked on County roads present a safety hazard and interfere with snow clearing operations. The depositing of snow or discharging of sumps onto County roads often results in icing conditions and obstructions which create another safety hazard for both motorists and pedestrians. The County of Lennox and Addington therefore requests your compliance with these regulations. Your cooperation will assist us in maintaining safer road conditions during the winter months and is greatly appreciated. Mixed progress for ‘Tree of Hope’ campaign so far BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

A generous outpouring of toy donations has helped the Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Family and Children Services meet one of its Tree of Hope campaign goals. And though they’ve excelled in one area, they are still lacking in another, that

being ‘big ticket’ wish list items and money. “So far, we’ve had one of the best Christmas campaigns ever — people have been steadily coming forward to buy toys for the kids we serve. We’re still counting, but it looks like we’ve been able to reach nearly 900 deserving people in more than 300 families this Christmas, said John Suart, Manager of Community

Air Conditioning & Heating

IMPRESSIVE FEA FEATURES TURES AND BENEFITS:

Relations at Family and Children’s Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington. Of those 300 families, Suart says about 15 to 20 per cent of them come from the Napanee portion of their catchment area. They were able to reach their toy target on Sunday when the cast of the Newburgh Christmas Community Concert stepped forward with a donation of more than $10,000, raised from their two shows earlier this month. “I got to go shopping with them on Sunday at Wal-Mart in Kingston, said

Suart. “Everyone’s done Christmas shopping, but to buy $10,000 worth of toys in one morning is really Christmas shopping to the max. The funny thing is when we were walking down the aisles we were getting clothes, toys and stuff for the kids and some of them admitted they hadn’t even started on their own Christmas shopping but here they were buying ten grand worth of toys, it was really a wonderful thing. It wasn’t all good news however as Suart estimates they are only about onethird towards their goal of

raising $10,000 for big ticket items for families in need. “There’s some things that we’re a little light on, and one is simply money, said Suart. “We’re hoping for about $10,000 and we’re not there and that’s a problem. Among the items they’re hoping to provide are cribs, beds and car seats for families in need. “We want to give something that lasts all year round, said Suart. “Some of the money raised at Christmas can actually go to our summer camp program which sends kids to camp all over Lennox and Addington

and Frontenac come July and that’s really important too. People can help the campaign by making donations at www.HelpTreeofHope.ca. “We’ve been a part of Lennox and Addington since 1899, added Suart. “It’s the generosity of Lennox and Addington and the people of Napanee that has really sustained our organization all that time, more than 100 years. Here it is in 2015, at Christmas time and we’re so grateful for the people of Napanee who support the work we do and support the families.

WARDEN | Council may have ‘difficult decisions’ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 with the programs and strategies of our four (lowertier) municipalities.â€? And, as county council and staff work through those items, Kennedy warned that it council may be confronted with some tough choices. “Where studies are currently underway, and those which will be initiated, we know as councillors that we may face some difficult decisions‌ But as

leaders, we will make those decisions keeping in mind taxpayer affordability, managing any debt and providing sustainability in services, thus benefitting all residents of L&A. Kennedy was first elected to municipal office in 2010 as a councillor in Stone Mills. In 2014, Kennedy — a former educator — successfully campaigned for reeve of the township. Smith has been on municipal council for nine years, with one term

as councillor and, before this past year, one term as deputy-reeve of the township. Kennedy pledged to do the necessary work to fulfill the responsibilities associated with being warden. “I wish to emphasize that I am up for the challenge, and ready to be an effective and dedicated warden for the County of Lennox and Addington, he said after being nominated for the job. “The position of warden must be taken very seriously. It requires time, commitment and dedication for the full 365 days of the term. It carries with it responsibility for over 400 staff, a budget exceeding $66 million, 458 kilometres of road, infrastructure involving various departments and the many services and programs being provided. Kennedy also said that he’d be fully prepared to

represent L&A’s interests at the Eastern Ontario Warden’s Caucus. He went on to say he’d count on the support of council and of staff over the upcoming year. Kennedy was nominated by Schermerhorn and Loyalist Township Mayor Bill Lowry. Smith was nominated by Addington Highlands Reeve Henry Hogg and Loyalist Deputy-Mayor Ric Bresee. After his election, all county councillors expressed their willingness to work with Kennedy, and their confidence that he’ll do a good job in 2016. “We had two exceptional candidates, I would not have a problem supporting either one of you, said Lowry. “I believe I can speak for all of council in saying you have this council’s support, Bresee told Kennedy.

ocher. These colours are well suited for both the bedroom and living room. Often, in Egyptian interiors you can see a combination of dark brown, chocolate, black and gold, as well as gold with blue or green. As Egypt has a hot climate, you can find homes with all white walls and ceilings. Floors tend to be of stone, mosaic, and parquet. Many homes have marble floors, which may not be well suited for homes here, but they are adorned with graphically designed area rugs depicting Egyptian cul-

tural symbols. The soft furniture is usually made of leather, and there is often wicker furniture. Arches, niches, columns and pilasters are very common in Egyptian interiors. Furniture is preferably made of natural wood without the carved decorations and ornaments. The decoration can be made

if stones and mother of pearl. The feet of furniture, traditionally are carried out in the form of animal paws. The Old World Egyptian interiors are laden with large furniture, area rugs, and bold-coloured fabrics. You can adapt this style by selecting intricately carved furnishings in traditional European styles, with particular emphasis on French styles such as Baroque and Rococo. Use a few sofas, including a chaise lounge, in the living room. In the bedroom, select a large bed with a high headboard in a dark wood. Scatter large floor pillows around the room. Add floor-to-ceiling curtains for window treatments in either a silk or linen fabric. You can also add artwork depicting Egyptian gods, such as Bast the cat goddess and Isis the Egyptian mother goddess. In more modern Egyptian design, they still incorporate the traditional green, red and gold, but also now purple, orange and blue. Furnishings are leaner, but still exhibit craftsmanship. Select leather sofas with clean lines but lots of detail, such as tucked arms, hidden feet and graphic patterns stitched into the material. Complement these with

glass-topped tables. Include stools with the traditional X-shaped legs, but add upholstery or padding using linen or cotton in a bold pattern. Select wood flooring or stone tiles and area rugs with graphic patterns in lighter shades of blue and red. Use a reed or bamboo Roman-style shade for window treatments. Add drapery in the bedroom for light control. In both traditional and modern Egyptian design, the cultural artwork of the country plays an important role. Framed paintings and prints are not as common in design schemes as painted wall murals and wall reliefs, bronzed statues and clay pottery of considerable size. When developing an Egyptian decor, look for statues, busts and pottery, and give each piece a prominent position. These items are not considered accessories but rather a sign of respect to the gods, goddesses and artisans of the past and present. Egyptian designs help to express yourself in a unique way. You can use Egyptian decor theme to express your heritage or create a beautiful Egyptian interior, inspired by a trip to this country.

Hospice L&A hosts service for those battling Christmas blues

BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Though the Christmas season is often thought of as a time of joy and togetherness it can be a somber time for many. Hospice Lennox and Addington will be hosting its second annual Blue Christmas Tuesday. Though Hospice’s focus is on grieving and bereavement, the event is open to anyone who is lonely, struggling or just not feeling very Christmassy. “If they’re just blue about the holidays and they want to come together with other people who might be struggling with the season then that’s the service for them,”

said Melanie McGarveyBramburger, Hospice Lennox and Addington service coordinator. “It’s for people to get together to grieve, pray and heal. It’s a more solemn service for people who aren’t really looking forward to the holidays. For Hospice, our focus is for those grieving the loss of a loved one, but the tradition of Blue Christmas goes back to those with any loss, a loss of a job or any type of a loss,” McGarvey-Bramburger added. Blue Christmases traditionally take place on Dec. 21, which is the winter solstice. Being the shortest day of the year, many struggling with depression, grieving loved ones and preparing for

Christmas find this day especially difficult. In Napanee the event will be held on Dec. 22 at the Airhart room at the L&A County General Hospital. “Last year’s event was really good. It was much smaller and it was a bereavement group that we did it for. It was really effective and everyone enjoyed it so we decided to open it up to more people this year,” said McGarvey-Bramburger. Phil Wilson of the Adolphustown-Conway Church, will lead a non-denominational service starting at 11 a.m. Fellowship and lunch will follow. Michelle Pyatt will provide live music and a candle will be lit in memory of loved ones. “Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a family member who has recently died; it may be a time that has always been difficult,” said McGarveyBramburger. The service starts at 11 a.m. Lunch is provided by donation. It is open to the public; however, McGarveyBramburger asks that those planning to attend the event RSVP to 613-354-3301 ext. 205 or melanie@landahospice.ca.

Second annual takes place at St. John’s Hall

BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

A free, family-style Christmas dinner is being served in Bath to bring the community together on Christmas day. Local residents Roxanne and Karen Taylor are putting the event on with help from the community. They also planned a dinner last year, which made them realize the need for a community Christmas in Bath. “Last year we had our first ever free Christmas Day dinner. We put it together in about a month, month-and-a-half, and the thing went off like wildfire,” said Roxanne. Karen added that they served 67 people last year. On top of that, they delivered meals to 21 people and four families. “There were people who were needy and there were people there that just didn’t want to be alone. It was really, really something else,”

said Roxanne. “It’s a sit-down dinner served at your table. It can be a table of four, a table of eight, or even a table of singles coming on their own and they’re just sitting down at the same table. There is music and last year we had gifts for every single adult and child,” Roxanne explained. Each table is set with platters of food just like a traditional Christmas dinner. Roxanne said it feels just like a family dinner as strangers and friends pass potatoes and turkey across the table to one another. The entire event is made possible through their generosity and the support of local people and business. Roxanne and Karen said it’s important to them to make sure no one is alone on Christmas and that everyone has a home-cooked meal. “Christmas time has high suicide rates and we thought with the age demographic in Bath, there are a

lot of people that are widowed or empty nesters and retired, and the premise wasn’t for the poor but it’s just for everyone who wants to have a family Christmas without sitting in front of the TV and feeling down on the day. It’s basically to bring the community together so people aren’t alone on Christmas day,” said Karen. “It’s a dinner hosted by Karen and myself but the whole community comes together to make this work,” said Roxanne. Last year there were activities for kids, live entertainment, and a reading of the Christmas story. Karen stressed that it’s a very “relaxed” and family-friendly atmosphere open to anybody who wants to stop by. The second annual free Christmas Day dinner will start at 1 p.m. at the St. John’s Hall, on 216 Church Street in Bath. Donations are accepted but not expected. To RSVP, call Karen at 613-352-5318 or just show up on Christmas Day.

Raiders not-so-pretty in pink Napanee can’t close out Pirates, settle for tie BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

bit of charity work mixed in with two games of hockey saw the Napanee Raiders collect dozens of teddy bears, thousands of dollars to help fight cancer and three points in the standings. The stuffed animals came via their annual Teddy Bear Toss game on Sunday, which they won 5-1 over the Campbellford Rebels while the cancer money was raised during a 5-5 draw Tuesday night against the Picton Pirates, both at the SPC. During the latter game the team sported pink sweaters, which were auctioned off with the net proceeds going to the Lennox and Addington

ersistence paid off for Camden East’s Taylor Stalkie, who this week found out he’d earned his way onto the U17 Team Ontario football roster that will compete at the 2016 International Bowl next month in Arlington, Tx. The NDSS Golden Hawks/Kingston Grenadier linebacker found out he made the cut earlier this week, one year after just missing out on making the official roster. “I made it to the second cut but I ended up making it as an alternate,” Stalkie said of last year’s tryout. “This year there were over 250 kids that tried out and at my position there was 35 guys that tried out. I was pretty surprised to be one of the seven guys to be taken. It was a real honour.” He’ll now head south for the International Bowl where his Team Ontario will square off against four U.S. Select teams in a series of games played in one of the most famous buildings in all of football, AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. “From what I’ve been hearing it’s a billion dollar stadium and I know going

against competition like Team USA, in the home of football in Texas is a real honour,” said Stalkie. “I’ll probably be speechless once I get in there. I got a couple of buddies that played on the team in previous years and just said it was a huge stadium and once the crowd gets going, it’s something special.” “I know football is totally different in the States, especially in Texas,” added Stalkie. “I know they’ll shut down stores just for high school ball. We’ll be practicing in a high school stadium. I saw a couple of pictures of it, it’s just like an NCAA stadium, it’s huge.” He’s looking forward to the challenge that will come with playing against U.S. players, as well as some of the opportunities that may open up for him following the game. “They're coming from all over like Virginia, Texas, even Nebraska,” said Stalkie of some of the teams he’ll face. "To compete in front of CIS scouts and some Division I scouts, and then to be along side of the best players in Ontario and have my name recognized with them is something I strive for day in and day out.”

with the last place Pirates. “It’s kind of the same story for most of the year to be honest,” said Raiders head coach Mike Hartwick. “Against most teams we have large spells when we dominate teams as we did (Tuesday) night. Then we’ll have 10 minutes when we come out and we don’t work and we don’t execute, and that happens.” Logan Drew and Tyler Romain each found the back of the net in the first period to give Napanee a 2-0 lead. Hawks reclaim NDSS trophy Snaps five year losing streak BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

After five straight years of finishing as bridesmaids in their own tournament, the NDSS girls hockey team finally got to hoist the Golden Hawks Invitational trophy on Thursday at the SPC. Not only had the Hawks finished as runner-ups the last five years, but they had done so to the same St. Theresa Titans team every single time. Fittingly, it was the Titans the Hawks met in this year’s finals when they were finally able to buck the trend. Overtime was required to break the streak as both teams battled to a 2-2 draw in regulation. NDSS’ Erika Barton had the lone goal of the shootout while Sara Kennedy blocked all three Titan shooters to secure the win. “Against this (Titans) team there has never been more of a two-goal spread,”

Adam Prudhomme-Staff

The Golden Hawks gather around the NDSS Invitational trophy after beating the St. Theresa Titans in the finals for the first time in five years. said Hawks head coach Chad Miller. “It’s always been these two teams tight and close. It’s good to see.” Barton got the Hawks off to a strong start in the finals, scoring a power-play goal just a couple of minutes into the game with an assist from Abby DeHaan. The two teams traded goals from there, with the Titans tying it late in the first and the Hawks retaking the lead in

the second when Maddie Marlow’s shot through traffic found the back of the net. Brianna Gaffney had the assist. The Hawks clung to the one goal lead through the rest of the second and deep into the third before the Titans tied it late, converting a huge rebound into their second goal of the game. “Sometimes you can see

the kids hang their heads (when they give up the tying goal late), but the good thing is I think they knew that this was their game,” said Miller. “Overall we out chanced them and had more offensive zone time. I think if anything it made us a little angry.” Unlike in previous years, this time NDSS was able to halt the Titans.

Sara Kennedy is a goalie for the NDSS Golden Hawks girls’ hockey team. On Thursday she turned away all three shots in a shootout to help the NDSS win the Golden Hawks Invitational. She helped the team to a perfect 4-0 record and was strong in the finals to dethrone the reigning St. Theresa Titans.

“I’m happy we had fight after that,” Hartwick said of the fact they rallied to tie after falling behind 5-4.”But we shouldn’t have to do that when we have a team down 4-1. It shouldn’t happen, but unfortunately it’s happened a few times.: The game got chippy at times as Napanee’s Brandon Major and Picton’s Brad Reid dropped the gloves late the second. The Raiders outchanced their opponents 5340 in shots but couldn’t pot the game winner. On Sunday afternoon it was a much different story as the Raiders scored early and often in their 5-1 victory. Hinds had the goal that set off an avalanche of teddy bears, scoring just 3:38 into the game. Aidan McFarland, Romain and Riley Steeves each had one while Hinds tacked on an empty-netter to seal the win. “It was a very special night,” Hartwick said of the cancer fundraising game and teddy bear toss. “We hate to lose the one point,

Right now I’m just trying to keep an open book and try to soak up as much information as I can get, because I still have another year to choose. I’m really excited to see where the recruiting process goes, especially after the International Bowl.” A strong showing there will only help built interest in his already rising stock. CARDS OF THANKS

Thank You

Three months later, with our eyes full of tears, hoping we will wake up and the nightmare won’t be true. Without the unbelievable heartfelt outpour of support from family, friends and the community we don’t think we could have ever done this devastating heartbreak. We are forever grateful that you supported us in this time of need. The love you have shown Shad and his family will never be forgotten. We will always cherish such amazing love. Thank you for the prayers, hugs, kisses, flowers, gifts, donations, cards, condolences, memories, food, fireworks, slide show, eulogy, music, DJ services, tables, chairs, tent, portable washrooms, words of remembrances, friends for life, making Shad’s urn, hockey tournament, Christopher’s Trust Fund, Shad’s neighbours, ambulance fire department, hospital, nurses, coroner, police, funeral home, cleaning our house, cutting our grass, clean up crew after the celebration, support from staff at Crabby Joe’s, Deli Fritz and Taggart Construction, phone calls and blessings. Most of all thank you for helping us celebrate Shad’s amazing life journey. Let us remember the smiling, the laughing, the talking, the sharing, the caring, the dancing and the love that Shad brought into our lives. Children are gifts from above to love and cherish. Cherish your moments every day. Kiss your children, tell them you love them. Tomorrow is a new day. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Celestini and Yearwood families

In loving memory of a dear son and brother, Charles (Chuck) who left us suddenly December 18, 2012.

Our lives go on without you But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartaches When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you Silent the tears that fall, Living our lives without you Is the hardest part of all.

The special years will not return When we were all together, But with the love within our hearts You will walk with us forever.

Loved, missed and never forgotten. Mom, Dad, Cheryl

QUINTE CONSERVATION CONCERNED ABOUT FARMERS LOSING VALUABLE SOIL ALONG THE NAPANEE RIVER

Quinte Conservation wants to help farmers along the Napanee River who may be losing valuable soil to erosion. Environmental Technician Christine Jennings says, “When the land is farmed right to the water’s edge this increases the risk of erosion and farmers can lose valuable top soil.” Jennings says, “The way to avoid this problem is for farmers to create a buffer strip of vegetation between the land being actively farmed and the water’s edge. Having a buffer acts as a filter for the surface water that runs off the land into our waterways. It also holds sediment and soils in place preventing it from washing away. We are expanding a Belleville program to help Napanee region farmers deal with this problem.” Quinte Conservation introduced a voluntary pilot project designed to financially compensate agricultural landowners who farm next to Potter’s Creek in the fall of 2015. The program is now expanding to the Napanee River. Funding will be provided as an incentive to leave flood prone areas and the river’s edge in a natural condition. Quinte Conservation is proposing to lease the land immediately adjacent to the Napanee River and take it out of tillage and crop production in order to protect the valuable soil resource. Staff will be available to assist the

landowners through the process of establishing a buffer and will find out if funding is possible to plant native trees and shrubs. Jennings adds, “The Napanee River has been identified as a contributor to phosphorus and nutrient loadings into the Bay of Quinte. We are interested in reducing phosphorus and nutrient loading as they directly contribute to the growth of algae particularly, harmful blue-green algae blooms. Landowners with agricultural property bordering on the Napanee River can play a key role in the reduction of phosphorus, nutrient loading and erosion leading to a healthier environment for the entire community.” Quinte Conservation staff will be sending out information on the new program to agricultural landowners and will also be visiting them with information. This project was undertaken with the financial support of Environment Canada and in partnership with the Bay of Quinte Remedial Action Plan. Quinte Conservation is a community-based environmental protection agency. It serves 18 municipalities in the watersheds of the Moira, Napanee and Salmon Rivers and Prince Edward County. It provides costeffective environmental expertise and leadership. Quinte Conservation’s main goal is to create a sustainable ecosystem where people and nature live in harmony. More information about Quinte Conservation is available at www.quinteconservation.ca.

They held off their comeback long enough to force a shootout. “We pushed right until the end, and our goalie stopped all three in the shootout which is awesome because the first (goal) is one I know she’d like to have back,” said Miller. “So it was a little redemption for her and our shooters pushed.” Both schools went undefeated in their pools with Napanee beating Sydenham 4-1 in their first game, blanking Prince Edward Collegiate Institute 2-0 and then rolling East Northumberland Secondary School 7-1. “You don’t get that far with four games in a day without every member of the team contributing,” said Miller. “I know a lot of the focus goes on the goalie and those three shooters at the end, but it takes a whole team to get us that far.” With the win the Hawks will now have their name

Not surprisingly it was the Titans the Hawks bested in those finals as these two teams have now met in seven straight finals. The only year they didn't meet

during that stretch was in 2012, when high school sports were cancelled as part of a job action. The Hawks will return to KASSAA league play this afternoon when they host the Holy Cross Crusaders at 3 p.m. on the Home Hardware rink of the SPC.

After a scoreless first period Mackenzie Duttle sent the puck to the back of the net from a nifty play by Kelsey Vermilyea and Laura Hagerman, Leaside soon tied it up. Saige Pearson found the back of the net again from a solid play by Maddy Oster and Lauren Sutton. The Crunch made the lead stick for a 2-1 victory. Come the second game, Leaside was hungry for the win and came out ahead beating solid goal tending by Makenna Marlow for the first goal of the game. Relying on strong defensive play the Crunch soon answered back with Emma Granger using the post to her advantage to tie the game up. All in all it was a successful day for the Crunch, coming out with three of four possible points puts the Peewees in third place. n The K&C Bobcat Services Bantam BB Stars collected three more wins in league play over the last week. Logan Votary, Nate Brant, Barker and Burger all earned helpers. Bailey Maracle stopped all but one shot in net for the victory. The following night, the Stars needed the better part of the first period to get rolling against the visiting Baltimore Ice Dogs, but roll they did on their way to a 80 win. Prophecies Foretold Historical facts back in the Bible foretold Jesus’ birth, which is the true meaning of Christmas. Many years before Jesus’ birth in the Bible, prophecies stated that there would be a supreme ruler and wonderful saviour over all the earth. Did you know there are over 300 prophecies about Jesus that were written a long time before his coming to the world? One of the prophecies was written 1,400 years before his birth by the prophet Moses, in the book of Genesis, saying that he will come from the tribe of Judah, and finally this prophecy was fulfilled in Matthew 1:1-17 where you find in the family tree of Jesus that he was from the tribe of Judah. Another prophecy says, “But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.” And it was fulfilled in Matthew 2 when Jesus was born in the small town of Bethlehem. A third prophecy in the book of Isaiah states that Jesus

Wise Men The wise men came to Bethlehem from the east, 800 miles following the star that God told them to follow. They gave gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus. The wise men’s names were Gaspar, Melchior and Baltha. Why did the three wise men bring gold, frankincense and myrrh to Jesus? The wise men brought gold as a valuable, frankincense as a perfume, and myrrh was commonly used anointing oil. All of these gifts had a spiritual meaning. Gold was a symbol of kingship earth, frankincense as a figure of deity, and myrrh was a sign of death. That is why the wise men brought gold, frankincense and myrrh. By Spencer

would be born of a virgin, and it was fulfilled in Luke 1:26-31, when Jesus was born of Virgin Mary. All this is foretold so that everyone could know about the saviour Jesus Christ, that he is the saviour of this world, and that he came to give us a better life. By Matthew

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 Christmas a Time of Giving Did you know that the average Canadian spends $1,810 on Christmas? Many Canadians go in debt because they spend money they don’t have. It’s not bad to buy gifts and other stuff at Christmas, but you have to be careful you spend your money wisely and to have a budget. instead of buying many gifts for people who don’t really need them, you can give some money to the poor. It says in the Bible to give money to the poor, and Christmas is a great time to do it. “I learned to give not because I have much, but because I know exactly how it feels to have nothing.” Quote unknown. By Ethan Wise Men When Jesus was born, wise men brought three gifts. Those gifts were; gold, frankincense and myrrh. The wise men brought these to baby Jesus not only as gifts, but as symbols. The gold represented kingship, the frank-

incense represented the greatness and sweetness of Jesus Christ, and myrrh represented the bitterness of the death of Jesus when he died. When the wise men brought the gifts they obviously had a purpose. Jesus had a purpose, to come down to earth to die on the cross for the sins of the world, so that we could go to heaven. By Blake Money Spent on Christmas In 2010, the average Canadian each spent $1,397 on Christmas for their family. In 2010, the average Canadian gave $446 to charity on Christmas. Why should we give more to ourselves when we don’t need anything? All Canadians just want and want when we don’t need. The poor need clothing and food to live. We want clothing for just another pair of clothes in our closet. They don’t want gifts. So why don’t we give the gifts that we want to the poor that need them? “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we gift” – Winston Churchill.

Not only is it good to give, but it makes you feel happy when you give. Sure, you didn’t get what you wanted, but happiness is one of the best gifts of all. By Ben A Christmas to Remember The purpose of Christmas is really important. God sent Jesus, his one and only son, to live on earth to die for our sins, when we really didn’t deserve it. He suffered day and night for us to be clean. Jesus was born in the manger, which was the stable, with the Shepherds, the animals, and his earthly parents, Mary and Joseph. An angel told Mary that she was going to have a baby and tat it was God’s son and they were to call him Jesus. He was pure with absolutely no sin. And he stayed that way his whole entire life, but was tempted in all ways to sin, but he never ever did! The purpose of Christmas is that Jesus would come to earth and later die for you. So it is a reminder that it is a Christmas to remember. By Georgia

Santa is looking for a new suit to wear this year. There was… well, a slight mishap with his traditional suit. Famous bad guys try to get off the ‘naughty’ list Dear Santa, It’s me Bowser and I am famous for my awesome powers in the Super Mario Bros. video game. I am so sorry for kidnapping Princess Peach all the time and I am not going to make ‘Bowser Tron 4000000.1’. I am not bad but I don’t get my sleeping pills so I

sleepwalk, or you could say, ‘sleep kidnap.’ After a few years, I finally found my pills but what I did not know was they are expired. I tried them and they don’t work right so I am cranky. I tried to defeat Mario but I told him my story so now Mario understands me now. All I want for Christmas

Best Wishes This Holiday Season

From all of us to all of you, go our warmest wishes for a Simply Unforgettable Holiday Season.

Creative writing from Amherst Island PS’s senior class are some weapons for my army and an armored base. Also, an awesome car. Oh yeah, I forgot… I will definitely stop kidnapping Peach. And please make a Mario Galaxy. I love those games. And can I look better

than Cat Bowser, like Boomerang Bowser or Armored Bowser or Shell Bowser? Anyway, I can teach you how to survive lava and fire, and don’t you think it would be cool if I made a new enemy called ‘Cannon Bro’ or

Dear Santa, My name is Darth Maul. I am famous for being one of the coolest Star Wars villains of all time. I am seen in the first movie, The Phantom Menace. Before I was a Sith, I was originally a part of a group call the Dathomiri Night Brothers. I am a species called Dathomirian. Everybody thinks I finished off Qi Gon Jinn on purpose, but I didn’t mean to. Seriously, it was an accident. You know that red paint on my face? Ya, it makes me angry when I see Jedi and Rebels. So it makes me fight them. By the way, do you know my brother? I kind of forgot his name because I haven’t seen him in a long time. Anyways, he has a yellow painted face so he doesn’t get as angry as me. For Christmas, I would like a gift to make me a Sith Lord because it’s not fair if Darth Vader gets to be a ‘lord’ when we’re both Darth Sidi-

ous’ apprentices. If he gets to be a lord, I should get to be. Sincerely, Darth Maul (Liam, Grade 5) Dear Santa, It’s me, Bigfoot, from the Amherst Island Woods. I think you will seriously regret putting me on the naughty list after you hear this… I am 500 years old, and huge. Kind of like you, but with big feet. I’ve been trying to play with people forever, but they always end up running under my foot. I don’t know why. I feel really bad. It is not my fault I have the biggest feet in the world, and I mean, it’s kind of in my name. I have never had Christmas before — this is the first time someone has been able to tell me before I crushed them. So I guess I’d love new feet for Christmas, if possible! I would like a new pair of feet because then I could play and talk with my friends in the woods without them running under my feet. Thanks, and come visit some time! Sincerely, Bigfoot (Finn, Grade 7)

Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.

Dear Santa, My name is Wile E. Coyote, and I am famous for trying to catch that dumb bird, er, I mean the Road Runner. I will catch my dinner someday! First off, Santa, the past few years have been a big misunderstanding. It may have looked like I tried to crush the Road Runner a couple of times, but I was simply doing science experiments when he happened to run by. The only reason I shot rockets at him is because he gave me an expired coupon. Plus, I always stop the rockets by blowing myself up on purpose (even if it looks like an accident). Please, Santa, the Road Runner has been terrorizing my life for years, trying to get me on the naughty list forever. You have to understand, I never wanted to be on the naughty list. What I would like for Christmas is more money because I blew all of it last week on titanium. I would like that for my upcoming ‘science’ plans. Sincerely, Wile E. Coyote (Jacob, Grade 8)

Dear Santa, My name is Bumble, I’m the abominable snowman from next door. As you know, I have been famous for trying to steal your reindeer, so I’m sorry. But it wasn’t very nice when they shoved me off that cliff. They did say that I would bounce, but I really didn’t. I really didn’t mean to steal the reindeer, I was so hungry and I wasn’t thinking straight. I just saw all of the meat that was on them and I need so much food to stay alive for a big abnormal snowman like me. Also, I was so angry at them for not letting me play with them. Whenever I came down from the mountain, they ran away and thought I was so scary. So I think the misunderstanding happened when I came down. I roared to let them know I was here but they thought I was coming down the mountain to eat them. I just wanted to play. For Christmas, I would really like a Christmas tree of my own and some ornaments to put on the tree. Also, can you please tell your reindeer that I’m hosting a game of tag up on the mountainside on Monday? Sincerely, Your friend Bumble (Sam, Grade 6)

Dear Santa, I am the Queen of Hearts and I am writing this letter because I have been informed that I am on the naughty list. If I am on the naughty list because of what happened with Alice and how I almost chopped off her head, I have an explanation. The day Alice showed up in Wonderland I was in a bad mood because I had lost a croquet game the day before. I am a sore loser, in case you didn’t know. When Alice showed up and challenged me, I figured that this was my chance to show everyone that I am better than them at croquet. But when Alice won, I got very mad and lost it. I had to chop off her head. In the courtroom I was accusing her of cheating when she suddenly disappeared. So it all worked out and after that my husband took me to a therapist and I have had lots of improvement. So as you can see, it was not my fault, it was Alice’s. If I am on the nice list then

I would like an axe, a deck of cards and a new croquet set. If you put me on the nice list, I will be good all next year, I promise. Sincerely, The Queen of Hearts (Bronwyn, Grade 6) Dear Santa, My name is Swiper. I am famous for sneaking onto Dora the Explorer’s show, and then I became a bad guy. I plead my innocence in the following sentence: one day I heard talking on my property, and it was mostly Spanish. I am from a Spanish family but I was born English you see, so I decided to tag along. One day they saw me in a bush. It went all downhill from there.

I still try to listen and be stealthy but I am seen in every episode! Anyway, can I get boots with soft heels from Christmas. You know… so I am not heard? Also, can you put Dora on the naughty list for trespassing on my property. Sincerely, Swiper the Fox (Nathan, Grade 5)

just really wanted a dalmatian. Like I said, I have anger issues, I know. I know I can’t use that as an excuse, but it’s true, sometimes I can’t control it. I am truly sorry, but I am not the only person (i.e. villain) who has done something bad and probably worse than me. For Christmas, I want a dalmatian so I can stop getting into trouble for ‘stealing’ dogs/puppies. I hope I have shown you that I am not such a bad person.

Dear Santa, I am sorry for what I did, I am truly sorry. Well, my name is Cruella De Vil; people get scared when they see me because of my hair. If you don’t know, half of my hair is white and the other half is black. I know what you’re thinking — someone who has hair like that should be a villain. Just listen to my side of the story. First off, I have anger issues and I really wanted a puppy. When Roger and Anita said ‘no’ to me having a puppy, I got angry. I got two guys to help me borrow (also never give back) all those cute puppies. I didn’t mean to cause problems; I

Sincerely, Cruella de Vil (Aryionna, Grade 7) Dear Santa, I’ve been good. Well, sort of, besides setting a nuclear bomb off. But that was fixed. There’s a person to blame, and that man is Batman. Batman is the one to blame; he’s the one who kicked me into the acid. This made me evil. I want some new Henchmen Version 4.0 for Christmas. Also, a bike that’s red and that has flames.
