reater Napanee mayor Gord Schermerhorn received two nominations and no opposition to become acclaimed as the 2014 Lennox and Addington County warden at last Wednesday’s county council meeting.

Schermerhorn was nominated by councillor Ric Bresee and seconded by councillor Roger Cole to succeed Stone Mills’ Doug Bearance.

“In 2014 an exciting year is happening here in Lennox and Addington County as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of incorporation,” Schermerhorn said after being sworn in and assuming the warden’s chair. “The official opening of the expanded museum and archives combined with an evening of entertainment and celebration will be the premier event to recognize this important milestone. 2014 will also present ongoing challenges and opportunities, including the need to exercise good financial stewardship while providing a high level of service for the residents. The commitment to continue to invest in infrastructure, particularly roads and bridges, is a high a priority for the county.”

Schermerhorn said he will also tackle tough issues, such as providing long term housing solutions for the region’s less fortunate.

“A lot of people don’t realize that we do have homeless people in our county,” he added.

To solve that issue, along with several others, Schermerhorn says the council will need to work together with all four municipalities in its boundaries. He also vowed to keep an eye on the bigger picture, taking provincial issues to the Eastern Ontario Warden Caucus to make sure the county’s voice is heard.

GN council tabs SPC as site for indoor pool Dep. mayor Cole says project needs to ‘move forward’

ouncil has identified the Strathcona Paper Centre as the location for an indoor pool, should the municipality be able to come up with $3.5$4 million in capital funding to build one.

The location was voted on at council on Tuesday and most councillors were in favour of the location.

Ward 5 Councillor Shaune Lucas, however, was hesitant, stating more public feedback should be provided before council finalizes a pool location.

“I don’t see what the rush is right now. We’re talking a $4 million project. It’s a one-shot deal. If people want to come and support it, I’m great with that. But what’s an extra couple of months when we’ve waited 10 years to do it right?” said Lucas.

Deputy Mayor Roger Cole, acting as mayor in Gord Schermerhorn’s absence, said it is time for council to move forward with the project. He said

where it’s going, we can go ahead with the process.

And I really think that we’re at that stage that we can make a decision on where it’s going,” he said.

Councillors Bill Pierson, Ward 4, and Marg Isbester, Ward 3, said they agreed with Cole and moved the motion to adopt Morgan’s proposal, making the SPC the location for a proposed pool in Napanee.

“This has gone on long enough,” said Isbester, stating the project will still take time to plan and fundraise for, even after a location is determined.

“We’ve got the site.

We’ve been kicking this around and going back and forth, let’s make a decision tonight to go with the site,” she said.

Lucas said though he is not opposed to a pool in Napanee, another of his concerns is that of money for the project.

“Just to remind everyone, we do have an obligation on our books that if there’s no partnership money, there’s no pool,” he said.

Isbester said though she understands it is a lot of money, it is a project she feels council needs to prioritize.

“We have to find a way to afford it. It’s going to be expensive and it shouldn’t be on the backs of the taxpayers, but it needs to be a good, competitive (facility), something that fits in with what we’ve got at the SPC. It can’t break our backs, it just cannot. But we have to find a way to do it.”

He said making a decision on the location would allow council to move forward with other aspects of the pool, including budget and fundraising.

This will be Schermerhorn’s fifth term as warden, having assumed the duty in 1998, '99, 2008 and '09.

A devastating blaze in a home on Sharpe Rd. in Morven left three people dead on early Sunday morning. OPP officers and the Ontario Fire Marshall were at the site on Tuesday trying to determine the cause.

Fire kills three in Morven Cause yet to be determined, not ruled suspicious Beaver Staff

An early Sunday morning fire in Morven has left three people dead.

Greater Napanee Fire Services responded to the call on Sharpe Road around 3:30 a.m. and recovered the remains of three bodies inside the residence. At the time of their arrival the house was completely engulfed in flames.

Neighbours of the burned out house told the Beaver that 79-year-old Sylvia Miller and her two sons Glen and Gordon passed away in the fire,

though OPP is yet to confirm the names.

Indistinguishable rubble piled on the ground is all that remains of the old farm house with no recognizable structure left standing.

Police and Greater Napanee Fire Services are expected to be at the scene for the rest of this week as they sort through the damage.

A post-mortem of the victims is scheduled to take place later this week.

Though Napanee OPP and the Ontario Fire Marshall continue to investigate the home, the fire is

not deemed to be suspicious at this time. Determining the exact cause of the blaze could take weeks due to the extent of the damage.

Anyone with information on the fire are asked to call the OPP at 1-888-3101122.

Neighbours of the victims have opened the Miller Family Fire Fund for the victims' family at the Royal Bank of Canada's Napanee, Odessa and Belleville branches. The account number is 5016100 and accepts cash or money order only.

Following the recent tragedy that hit the Philippines, staff at the John M. Parrott Centre collected money to help the family of one of their co-workers, Cora Legault, whose family lost their homes in the village of Madarag.

Legault was able to provide her sister with $400 Canadian dollars, which she said would be enough money to buy supplies and rebuild her home.

Concert overwhelming success

A new fundraising record was made at the 34th annual Newburgh Community Christmas Concert on Saturday, raising over $12,000 to buy gifts for local children. Performances were such a success that both shows were jam-packed despite the heavy snowfall and slippery roads.

“This year we raised $12,505 - an all-time high for us! We were very excited,” explained Mary Anne Wood, who has been involved in the Newburgh Community Christmas Concert since she was 18.

“We were out shopping at 8 a.m. the next day for 125 children,” she explained.

“We had some funds left over, which is put in a specific fund to assist children and families who will come in a week before Christmas.”

Funds raised assist the Lennox and Addington Family and Children Services.

Wood said support from the community was overwhelming this year. Her only regret was having to turn people away after the show had sold out.

Still 30 gifts short for Christmas Teens throughout Lennox and Addington County, Frontenac and Kingston may be without gifts this holiday season. The Family and Children’s Services Tree of Hope Campaign is looking for support to ensure gifts can be provided to 30 more teens over the age of 12.

"We have more than enough presents for children, but for the teens who we serve it's a different story. We're short by 30 presents. We need the public’s help to give these youth the Christmas they deserve," said John Stuart, community relations for Family and Children's Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, in a press release.

He said initiatives to bring in gifts for children have been extremely successful and he thanks those who have contributed. Local boy, Devon Cobb, 11, organized a toy drive this year as well as a number of organizations, including the Ministry of

Health in Kingston, the Newburgh Christmas Concert and CFB Kingston have produced hundreds of toys. However, most of these efforts have provided gifts to children under 12 and now the campaign is looking for gifts for teenagers.

One 15-year-old girl needs winter boots and a 15-year-old boy would like a Maple Leafs hockey jersey, explained Stuart in a press release.

"We're asking people to call us before the end of the week. We'll give them all the details about the gifts we need. All they have to do is drop it off at one of our offices," said Stuart.

Napanee Legion celebrates 85 years

It’s been 85 years since the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 137 – Greater Napanee began and next week it will celebrate this milestone with a luncheon open to the public.

What started out as a place for veterans to come together and support one another has now evolved into a place all members of the community can enjoy. The legion has also contributed to the community by donating hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past 85 years.

“We’re celebrating what we’ve done for the community in 85 years and the veterans,” said Bob Norrie, Greater Napanee Legion executive.

Dec. 28 will mark 85 years but the Legion will host a celebration on the afternoon of the 27th. A luncheon will be provided from 1-3 p.m., which will include a presentation from the Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Provincial Command office.

The Legion’s motto is, “Saluting the past, welcoming the future” and Norrie said Napanee’s Legion has embraced that slogan in many ways over the past

Norrie said engaging youth has been a large endeavor. A number of recreational activities are organized by the Legion today as well as community events.

A youth dart league now takes place every Sunday.

The legion also plans dances, youth baseball and hopes to offer shuffleboard activities for the future.

When the 335 legion members are not planning youth activities, they are working on ways to give back to the community.

“Everything we do, money goes back into the community. We’re a nonprofit organization so we just run the business to break even and run charity events. We invest in local charities and some money goes to Command, which goes to veteran organizations,” said Norrie.

He said the legion has been sure to evolve over time while also staying true to the legion’s motto and core needs: to honour and support veterans.

With recent renovations, the Greater Napanee legion has implemented a wall to honour war veterans, past and present. “‘Saluting the past,’ that’s our theme. That wall really honours that,” he said.

Pension plan just one approach for poverty concerns ONTARIO residents may soon be asked to pay out more money up front. Pay cheques that are being stretched seemingly farther than ever to pay for a future seems quite uncertain these days. It’s a gamble that will require close consideration.

This week, the Liberal government suggested that if Ottawa won’t consider increasing Canada Pension Plan premiums to allow seniors to receive more than the $12,000, the public sector plan now pays out at maximum, it will consider imposing its own mandatory public pension plan.

With the present state of the economy, one can see how it would be very difficult for seniors to live on the Canada Pension Plan stipends alone — heck, it’s getting downright difficult for the working class and for many business operators to live in this province under the present economic conditions.

The costs of many staples of life like food, electricity, and gasoline are on the rise and their impact can be felt in several ways. Property taxes are rising because municipalities are feeling the crunch, while trying to maintain infrastructure and services. Goods in the marketplace are priced higher because they cost more to produce. Affordable housing is becoming more scarce. In short, people are having a tough time living the life they once did on the amount of money they have available to them.

One can understand the long-term benefits that propping up pension plans might afford. Seniors with greater income levels would be more likely to stay in their homes longer, to afford proper food and clothing, and to put less strain on already taxed health-care and social-welfare systems, saving money in the long run by relieving pressure and ensuring those systems are only burdened by the most acute problems thrown at them.

That said, however, Ontario has a huge debt, it is looking at massive increases in electricity costs over the next 20 years, and one has to wonder if these payments will be seen as just another cost now that will drive businesses out of Ontario and will drive job seekers across provincial boundaries looking for a better break. When most people in this province reach the age where they are eligible to benefit from the money they’ve paid, what will the province look like and will sacrificing their pay be worth the gains? Will the proposed pension plan be enough?

Those aren’t questions that can easily be answered and it wouldn’t be entirely surprising if pension reform isn’t a wedge issue that will drive the next Ontario election.

From this perspective, however, it appears the province has a real problem on its hands now with the economy and it would make more sense to see action that would have an impact now, rather than years down the road. Perhaps an HST exemption on home heating and fuel costs would deal a more effective and immediate blow to poverty, while also providing a boon for the economy. It’s at least worthy of equal consideration in the debate.

Community Christmas Concert Overwhelming Success On Saturday December 14, the Community Christmas Concert held their 34th Annual Concert.

Even with the storm, the audience came. In fact for only the second time in our history we had to close the doors early for the afternoon show. We felt so bad we couldn’t accommodate all the wonderful people who wanted to attend but many came back to fill the gym on Saturday night as well!

The generosity of this community continues to overwhelm us.

The donations received topped even our hopes and we counted $12,505.00 on Saturday night after the show! It would not be possible for us to tell you that every cent of that goes to the children of the community without the support of our local community businesses including McCormicks Store in Camden East; Rick & Anita National Grocers, Kingston; Stone Mills Family Market, Tamworth; Walmart, Napanee; Caroline Kusar; Shoppers Drug Mart, Taylor Kidd,

Kingston; Giant Tiger, Napanee; McKeown and Wood Fuels, Battlefield and King’s Sound System and the cast of the concert who pay for all their props and costumes themselves. We are also so grateful to the Limestone School Board and Newburgh Public School for their support in using their facility.

Break from tradition With the holiday that dare not speak its name almost upon us, we actually found ourselves sending out fewer Christmas cards this season. This radical departure from the norm would seem counterproductive in our attempt to preserve our memories of old fashioned Christmases on the farm.

This year, our Christmas greetings were sent out electronically, to friends and relatives. A two page Christmas letter with photos was compiled one afternoon, and then sent to more than 230 recipients instantly at the press of a button. This way, I was able to proclaim Merry Christmas to all our acquaintances with wild abandon, and end the search for cards which didn’t dance around what has become an offensive word by the purveyors of political correctness.

It was a thought provoking move as there is nothing quite like the experience of reaching into the mailbox and pulling out a stack of received cards, and the excitement of tearing them open and admiring the hand-picked cards with their personal messages inside.

On the farm, my mother would sit for days at the kitchen table in front of the wood stove, hand picking cards and writing individual

letters to family friends and relatives. As I recall, she sent out around 60 cards. Incredibly, I still have a few of her leftover cards and they all shout the same message inside – “Merry Christmas”, with no apology. The term “Happy Holidays” existed only in Irving Berlin’s popular song of the 1940s and seldom made its way onto Christmas cards.

These cards were hung on a string in the living room, every now and then, someone taking a few minutes to once again admire the sender’s choice of card and the inscription inside. The majority depicted either a dog or a cat somewhere on the card, the sender having thoughtfully remembered our menagerie of pets. After Christmas, the cards were bundled and stored in a rack which hung on the wall. The last ritual which sort of dashed the spirit of Christmas was to lay out the cards on the table and cross reference with those that had been sent.

Carefully, with a pen, Mother would cross off the names of those recipients who had not reciprocated! The following year, she would hold the bundle in her hands and with almost a tear, would mumble, “They’re all so lovely”, and into the fire box they would go as she wait-

We never gave much thought as to how the tradition of exchanging Christmas cards began. It was a custom to send cards every year in December, no questions asked.

It maintained a critical link with friends and relatives, separated by distance, many of whom we would otherwise not hear from, except at Christmas. While it is sad that fewer cards are being sent these days due to the proliferation of socalled politically correct cards and the cost of postage that has risen

dramatically from the three cent stamp that I recall from my youth (be prepared to pay a dollar per stamp next year), the electronic age has enabled us to search for answers to our questions. A quick search while writing this column on the history of Christmas cards, instantly spat out pages of detailed history on the custom.

The custom of sending Christmas cards was started in Victorian England in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole. He was a civil servant who was very interested in the new 'Public Post Office' and wondered how it could be used more by ordinary people. Sir Henry shared the idea of Christmas cards with a friend who was an artist. They designed the first card and sold them for 1 shilling each. (probably about 10 cents today).The card had three panels. The outer two panels showed people caring for the poor and in the centre panel was a family having a large Christmas dinner! Some people didn't like the card because it showed a child being given a glass of wine!

As printing methods improved, Christmas cards became much more popular and were produced in large numbers from about 1860. The Christmas

card custom made its way to North America in the late 1840s, but cards then were very expensive and most people couldn't afford them. In 1875, Louis Prang, a printer who was originally from Germany but who had also worked on early cards in the UK, started mass producing cards so more people could afford to buy them. In 1915, John C. Hall and two of his brothers created Hallmark Cards, who are still one of the biggest card makers today!

I am sure some of the earlier creators of Christmas cards would cringe at the inane politically correct messages carried in today’s cards, and even be more amazed by the ability to send hundreds of Christmas messages, electronically, in a millisecond.

Whether we have gained anything in the last century is to be debated. I must admit, it is difficult to match the feel of a Christmas card and the personal message handwritten inside.

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 65 Years Ago December 22, 1948 n Progressive Conservative George Drew was elected in the Carleton Federal By-Election with a majority of 8,901.

He defeated C.C.F. candidate Eugene Forsey, who polled 3,334 votes and J. Nelson McCracken the Social Credit candidate who had 455 votes. Both losing candidates forfeited their deposits. n Gibbard’s Furniture Shops Limited reported its highest sales output in company history, prompting a five per cent wage increase to all male employees plus a Christmas bonus. Though sales were booming, general manager D.S. Roffey warned employees that the cost of materials were also raising ‘at an equal rate’. He pointed out that if employees watch the waste of materials, substantial savings would be passed on to them.

The company planned on installing more new equipment in 1949 to remain competitive with American wood working plants.

The need for better equipment was emphasized as the Canadian government announced plans to lift a ban on the importation of American furniture in Jan. 1949.

35 Years Ago December 20, 1978 n James Cuthill, reeve of North Fredericksburg Township, was sworn in as Lennox and Addington County warden.

“We have much to do, and much can be done if we work together,” Cuthill said after being sworn in. “We must stop inflation or we can look forward to a depression worse than the great depression of 1930.”

He spoke of the upcoming construction of an alternate route to Hwy. 33, set to begin in 1979, which would increase industrial and residential growth in the southern part of the county.

He noted he was pleased with how ‘progressive’ the county had become in the last decade, pointing to the opening of the Lennox and Addington County Home for the Aged which could accommodate 160 residents, the institution of a county welfare system and county library system with 10 branches as well as the establishment of the County Museum. All councillors announced their support of the new warden. n C.S. Froud, a prominent educator, principal and county superintendent, passed away.

In honour of his memory Napanee and District Secondary School athletics named its annual top male and female award after him.

The Spirit of Christmas – Christmas spirit I think Christmas spirit is about getting together with friends and family and about giving gifts to family and friends. It tastes like eating home made cookies. Christmas smells like gingerbread houses and candy.

Christmas is not just about receiving gifts. It is about getting together with people you love. Christmas looks like the bright Christmas tree with presents under the tree. So you shouldn’t just open presents, you should have a nice Christmas dinner with your family

of pine tree when we decorate our Christmas tree with glistening glass ornaments, crystal clear icicles, pretty homemade ornament, and our sparkling angel.

We love going speeding down our hill together on our sleds and making giant snowmen with carrot noses, small pebbles for eyes, a piece of dead grass for his joyful smile, and long sticks for his arms. My brother Nicholas and I help mom and dad put up our gorgeous outdoor Christmas decorations. We put up shining multi-colour lights on our house and bushes.

There is a dazzling train, sparkling reindeer pulling Santa in his massive sled full of toys, and a glowing chimney with Santa delivering gifts. That is what my heart tells me the Christmas spirit is.

Spirit of Christmas Do you know what the most magical time of the year is? It’s Christmas. It’s a time when you smell that sweet gingerbread and the fluffy snow and watching holiday movies with your families and seeing the presents under the tree.

So remember, the spirit of Christmas is not about getting presents; it’s about giving them and sharing them with your loved ones.

And most of all, it’s about loving your loved ones; for example, your sisters, your brothers, your mom and your dad.

The Spirit of Christmas Christmas is a time for all the people in the world to be happy. The spirit of Christmas is that all the people give and it’s not what you get. Christmas started when God was born and Christmas is God’s birthday, but some people is about getting presents but it’s not. Bells are ringing with joy, people are putting up their lights; the gingerbread man is in the oven. My nose wants to get it but I try not to because it is too hot. I see people making snowmen. I ate some of Santa’s cookies; it was creamy inside. Presents aren’t random presents; they come from the heart.

Students provide clean water in Kenya

Students at Selby Public School are looking to give back not just to the community this holiday season but also to provide clean drinking water to people in Kenya.

Grade 5 teacher Kelly McCutcheon said her 23 students were researching initiatives they could participate in as part of their social studies course. In September, they discovered We Day, organized by Free the Children, and wanted to participate.

We Day is an educational movement initiated by youth leading local and global change. Free the Children is an international charity providing education and support to allow children to achieve their fullest potential no matter where they live or how fortunate they may be financially.

Selby PS students chose Water for Kenya as a global initiative and care packages for children at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital as a local initiative. More information on Water for Kenya can be found at www.thewaterproject.org.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;In order to participate in We Day, you have to choose a local and a global issue to work on so their global one they thought theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to do something about the water situation in third-world countries.

They read that a lot of girls in Kenya canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go to school because they spend all day carrying water on their heads and after research they found that like a billion people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have clean water, 5,000 children die everyday just because of dirty water, so thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when they decided they would do something to raise money.

They researched different organizations and they found Free the Children to be the most attainable goal,â&#x20AC;? explained McCutcheon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Knowing that a lot of the girls in Africa that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get education because they have to carry water miles and miles away from home, it just kind of makes you sad hearing about it so we just felt that we needed to do something about it,â&#x20AC;? said Grade 5 student Emma Wannamaker.

The initiative will provide water for life for one person in Kenya for $25.

MCutcheonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s students have raised enough to provide clean water for life to

more than 12 people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were reading in the newspaper and looked online and heard about how they had built a school and all these kids were so eager to go and they were racing and ripping their text books because they all wanted to have a desk but the school had to close down before it even started because their families couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the clean water they needed since the kids were in school,â&#x20AC;? explained Grade 5 student Kierstin Simpson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we realized that they really needed water and they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any clean water, we realized that we should probably help them because they deserve clean water just like us,â&#x20AC;? said another classmate, Mairyk Reid.

Many of the students said they wished for water for life this Christmas so they could not only help provide water to people in Kenya but also ensure kids like themselves were able to go to school. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think Water for Life would be a pretty good Christmas present,â&#x20AC;? said Grade 5 student Cole Youmans. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find it fair because we have all this stuff we need and we spend

Local firefighters help battle downtown Kingston blaze

reater Napanee Fire Services assisted Kingston Fire and Rescue Services in the fire that broke out in downtown Kingston on Tuesday.

“We sent two pumper trucks and a tanker truck and 13 people. They covered some of the Kingston stations while all the Kingston stations were fighting the fire. There were also trucks sent from Newburgh, Yarker, Enterprise, Odessa, Amherstview and Bath,” explained Randy Cook, Greater Napanee Fire Services public educator.

Once the downtown fire was under control, local firefighters assisted in fighting the fire to relieve Kingston firefighters.

“There needs to be a lot of credit that goes to all the firefighters and Kingston fire and rescue. They had a very significant fire, a very dangerous fire, in their downtown core,” said Gervais.

Services assisted at the Greater Napanee station, while firefighters were in Kingston, explained Greater Napanee Fire Services fire chief Terry Gervais. He said the mutual aid program was very successful and did not leave any communities unprotected at any time.

The fire began just

One construction worker was trapped at the top of a crane. A CFB Trenton helicopter responded and rescued the crane operator that had been stranded at the end of the crane for

“That helicopter saved his life,” said Gervais, stating fire crews could not get to the man since there was so much fire at the base of the crane.

There is fear that the crane is unstable and may collapse. Kingston Fire and Rescue Services hope to dismantle the crane by Thursday evening to ensure it does not fall unsafely on any buildings downtown.

The main construction site is now under control.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Utilities have been shut down and it could be weeks before power is fully restored in all areas.

About 200 people were evacuated from the area surrounding the fire. Evacuees are advised to register with the Red Cross at 1855-797-8875.

The Spirit of Christmas – Christmas Spirit The spirit of Christmas is spending time with your family and friends. I love baking cookies with my family because they joke around and I love them.

Christmas is about giving, not talking. When I wake to all the presents, it is an amazing and fantastic feeling. After we open our presents, we make cookies and hot chocolate, while the steaming hot chocolate slowly drizzling down my throat.

After we have our hot chocolate, we go sledding on the greatest hill ever.

My tradition is wrapping myself in Christmas lights and running down the driveway. Every year me and my family has a turkey dinner. One thing I wish for is I hope I’m not on the

naughty list.

Raiders double up on Jets No love loss in hard-hitting contest

yler Romain fell an assist shy of the Gordie Howe hat trick Tuesday night, but did pot two crucial goals to lift his Napanee Raiders to a 4-2 win over the Amherstview Jets.

His effort helped Napanee split their two games this week after dropping a 7-4 decision in Picton.

Romain got his first of Tuesday’s game when he riffled a shot past Amherstview’s Troy Paquette late in the first. That knotted the score at 1-1 before he gave his team the lead with his second of the night at the 13:07 mark of the middle period.

Amherstview had an answer just a few seconds later to square things at 22 before Austin Boulard potted a pair, one shorthanded, to give the Raiders a permanent lead.

The tone of the hardhitting game, which saw two fights in the final frame, was set within the opening minutes. After Paquette was bowled over in a scrum in front of his net on the game’s first shot, Napanee goalie Josh Lasher was knocked over during a Jets’ scramble.

Only Amherstview’s Zach Masterson was called for interference, a call that drew the ire of the Jets’ bench.

Through it all Napanee managed to stay focused on the more important task of securing two points.

“It was a physical battle for sure,” said Raiders coach Mike Hartwick. “I was happy with how our guys responded for 60 minutes. (The Jets) are a physical team and they don’t quit. I’m glad our guys rose to the challenge.”

Napanee grid iron stars help Canada East to gold in Florida Local connection to ESPN Pop Warner title winners

trong defense by Napanee's own Mitch Karel and Hunter 'Spider' Dickerson helped Canada East to their first ever ESPN Pop Warner Super Bowl title this past Sunday in Florida.

Facing off against their Canadian counterparts from the west, Canada East rolled to a 36-0 victory at the ESPN World Wide World of Sports Complex to claim the midget division bracket.

On the way to the title Canada East bested Puebla, Mexico by a score of 37-6 on Dec. 9 and Mexi-

co's first entry by a score of 17-0 on Dec. 12.

All told eight nations were represented at the event that saw some of the world's best high school aged players square off in an international tournament. That marked the most countries ever represented at the 57-year-old event.

While down south the Napanee players had the chance to take part in a Tom Shaw training camp and chat with NFL player Frank Davis and had a tour of Central Florida University's football program.

Dickerson, who was sponsored by Hawley Chiropractic, Bridge West Ani-

mal Hospital, Napanee Sports Association and TD Bank, will be on a football field again next month as he attends try outs for the Kingston Grenadiers. This past fall he suited up for the NDSS Golden Hawks football team as a Grade 9.

Karel, who was sponsored by Belleville Boyer Kia, Belleville Nissan, Steve's Truck Services, Napanee Cartronics, Harvey's Kingston, Napanee Sports Association and Lyle Hamilton's Physiotherapy, will be at Team Ontario try outs next month. He is a member of the Holy Cross Crusaders, having just completed his Grade 10 season this past fall.

Despite not playing since Nov. 29, Lasher showed no signs of rust. He stood tall in the third period in particular, blanking the Jets for the final 20 minutes to move to 6-8-0-1 on the year.

“I thought he looked really good,” Hartwick said of his goalie. “He made a big save (late in the third).

He was good with his rebound control. (The Jets) have some guys who can go to the net.”

Napanee desperately needed the win, which was their first in three games, after Thursday’s 7-4 loss in Picton.

Bud Norris had Napanee’s only goal in the first which was offset by three Pirate tallies. Josh Murphy and Keenan Murray each had a goal in the second to help Napanee climb back to a 5-3 hole. Norris had one more in the third but

was again outdone by two Pirate strikes, including an empty net goal in the final seconds.

Kyle Copeland took the loss, charged with six goals on 40 shots. Andrew Pearson got the win, stopping 17 Raider attempts.

With the split Napanee is now 10-15-0-2 on the year, equalling 22 points.

They are three points back of the 11-10-1-2 Campbellford Rebels for the final playoff spot. Campbellford was idle this weekend after Saturday’s scheduled meeting in Amherstview was postponed due to weather. The Rebels do have three games in hand over the Raiders.

Napanee will head to Deseronto tomorrow night to battle the Storm in their final game of 2013. Napanee has won all previous five meetings thus far.

Storm put forth competitive effort, still lose to Panthers Port Hope hangs on for 4-3 win

Friday’s third period Deseronto Storm rally was enough to make the visiting Port Hope Panthers sweat a bit but ultimately not enough to end their prolonged losing streak.

Josh Cameron and Johnny Maracle scored just

over a minute apart in the final five minutes to bring the Storm to within a goal at 4-3. They couldn’t complete the comeback however and that wound up as the final score and pushed Deseronto’s losing skid to eight.

Maracle put the Storm on the board first early in the game, scoring at the 9:41 mark of the opening period. The lead held until Port Hope’s Tyler Davey broke the shutout early in the second.

Neither team scored again until Riley Turland stretched the twine in the opening minutes of the third to give the Panthers a lead they’d never surrender. Ryan Wilkinson and Chandler Gillespie each potted a goal to build a 4-1 advantage, giving them just enough offense to secure the win.

Matt Loveys took the loss against his former club, stopping 43 pucks.

Brandon Green was just as busy in the Panthers’ net,

stopping 41 of 44.

Both team’s penalty kill units were sharp as the Storm went 0-7 and the Panthers 0-6 on their respective power-plays.

Though the game resulted in an all-toofamiliar result, the 4-3 defeat marked the Storm’s best showing in over a month. Since edging the Panthers 4-3 in a shootout back on Nov. 16, the Storm have since been outscored 62-9 over their last eight.

Prior to last Friday’s one

goal margin loss they hadn’t come any closer than a 7-2 defeat to the Amherstview Jets on Nov. 17.

Those seven goals were also the fewest they allowed prior to their latest game.

The Storm will look to ride their tiny bit of momentum into tonight’s home meeting with the Napanee Raiders. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. Napanee has won all five of their previous meetings thus far in the season with three

remaining.

Following that game the Storm will have a week off for the Christmas break before travelling to Campbellford on Dec. 28 for their final game of 2013.

At 3-22 with just 15 games left on the schedule the Storm don’t have much but pride to play for the rest of the way. They are 14 points back of fifth place Napanee and 19 back of the Campbellford Rebels who hold the final playoff spot.

he Napanee Midget A Stars lost a close one to first-placed Ajax in Lakeshore League action on Friday, falling 3-1.

Though they were short on bodies the Stars turned in a very solid game.

They came out strong, and played Ajax tight to the end. Matt Davis got the Stars’ goal, with assists to Dalton Manley and Ian MacGregor. Saturday’s game in Lindsay was snowed out.

They have three road trips this week, to Pickering, Ajax, and Quinte West, but they are home Monday to Kingston at 9 p.m. n Meanwhile the Minor Midgets fell 3-1 to Whitby on Saturday night. They have three games left in their schedule before their trip overseas, playing Oshawa in a home-andhome series, and Port Perry at the SPC on Saturday at 9 p.m. Along with Uxbridge, these teams are all battling for a playoff spot. During the Christmas break they travel to Europe, Russia, and the World Juniors, and will play exhibition games during their stay. n Facing the top ranked Lakeshore teams, the Napanee Exit Realty Minor Bantams had a challenging week. At home to face the first-placed Cougars, the Stars trailed Cobourg right from the

puck-drop, and never recovered to lose 6-2. Alex Brady and Kael Fredenburgh scored for the locals with helpers from Ryan McLay, Steven Shea, and Fredenburgh.

On Sunday in Kingston they faced the team they are chasing in the standings, and again faced an uphill battle in the first period as it was the secondranked Canadians who scored first. Late in the second, on the power-play, McLay chipped a deflection over an outstretched goalie for the equalizer. Nelson Powers and Fredenburgh earned assists. Then, while shorthanded, the Stars forechecked hard to force a takeaway which Shea got across to Brendan Hagerman who found the twine.

Then it was the Canadians turn to put added pressure on, and a giveaway at the Napanee blueline led to the equalizer at 2-2, with just 2:06 left. Saturday at 7:30 p.m. they return to the SPC where they host Oshawa. n The Boyd Electric Peewee As earned two important points in the fight for a playoff spot on Sunday in Clarington, with a nail-biting 3-2 victory. They got goals from Kyle Garrett, Ryan Kirkpatrick, and Liam Wilkinson in the win.

As of this writing, two points separate the fifth through ninth placed teams in the very crowded division.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK NOLAN FOX

Nolan Fox is a member of the Napanee Country Traditions Novice Stars. He’s helped his team get off to a great start this year as they currently reside in first place in the standings. He was one of many Star players to light the lamp this week, scoring a goal in an 8-1 defeat of visiting Uxbridge.

n The Spuds Griddle Atom As travelled to Pickering to shut out the bottom feeding Panthers 3-0, and move into playoff contention.

Against a tough Uxbridge squad on Sunday, they scored first when Greg Mills netted one, set up by John Hearns. Connor Brooks made it 2-0, with Ben White earning a helper on the play. After Uxbridge tied it in the third, Brooks got his second of the afternoon on the power-play with 6:06 remaining. Dylan Bailey and Elliott Mundle also got points on the play. However, less than a minute later, Uxbridge tied the match at 3-3 where the game ended.

The team is on the road for two games this weekend. n The Napanee Country Traditions Novice Stars continued to roll along, in first place, with a convincing 8-1 win over visiting Uxbridge. Cal Uens had two goals and four assists, Spencer Cranley had a pair, while Ethan Sutcliffe, Carter McKee, Brody Beaubien, and Nolan Fox all had singles. Ty Kemp, Will Myers, and Lukas Hannah tallied on the assist side of the ledger.

Whitby White will provide the competition Sunday at noon on the Goodyear rink. n The Bantam AE and Atom AE teams both travelled to Georgina last weekend for Silver Stick Tournament action. The Bantam AE squad faced tough competition from teams from Stouffville, the host Georgina, and Whitby,

n The McDougall Insurance Novice AE and the L&A Mutual Minor Atoms played in Oshawa’s Hockeyfest last weekend. On Friday night the Novice AE squad faced the very strong Kitchener Ranger team coming away with a loss.

Daniel Chase was the only goal scorer for Napanee in that game. Early Saturday morning they played the Leitrim Hawks, an Ottawa area team, winning 4-3. Connor McGinnis started them off, scoring from Chase. Benjamin Buxton scored assisted by Kristen Sutton. Then Chase scored twice, the first one helped by Duncan Clarke and Ethan Boutilier, the second one unassisted.

In their next game on

Saturday afternoon, they played the Hamilton Tigers, the eventual winners of the tournament. In a well-played game the squad just ran out of gas.

The team had a great experience and a good time.

They have two away games this weekend and then a break for the Christmas Holidays. n Also at Oshawa’s Hockeyfest, the Minor Atoms had a 1-1 tie with the Vaughn Rangers, and also tied Port Perry 2-2, but lost to the Clarington Toros, who advanced to the finals.

The Oshawa Minor Generals visit the Strathcona Paper Centre on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. to take on the L&A Mutual Stars, both in a push for a playoff spot with time running out.

The Woods family would like to thank family and friends who supported all of us when our mother Maysel Kathleen Woods (nee Hart) passed away on October 6, 2013 after a brief illness in Lennox and Addington Hospital. The phone calls, food, flowers and hugs were greatly appreciated.

Maysel was born in Roblin, Ontario, the twelfth child of Ed and Hattie Hart. She was fondly referred to as “Babe” being the baby of the family. After her marriage to Lyall Volney Woods in 1946, they moved to “the River Road” in Napanee where Maysel had resided for 67 years. They were married for 50 years and raised five children, Tom, Elleda, Bonita, Trudi and Ed. Maysel had nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren who knew her as “Grandma Babe”.

She was a homemaker and worked at the former Emerson plant in Napanee until she retired at the age of 65. Maysel was a great cook, knitter, crotcheter and loved a good game of euchre with her family and friends. She was always ready for the next party. She loved life, was energetic, caring and “a rock” during troubled times for many. She will be missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing her. Please “Pay It Forward” (a random act of kindness) in her name.

Passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 15, 2013 in a house fire that took his life. Gordon turned 57 on November 30th. Gordon was the son of the late Harold Miller of Morven and Sylvia Miller who also passed away in the same tragic fire.

Sadly missed by brothers Garry (Angela) of Napanee; Grant (Lisa) of Napanee; Garold (Connie) of Morven and sister Gail Crouse of Village Green in Selby.

His eldest brother Glenn also passed away at the same time.

GALAMB, Laszlo (Lance)

Peacefully at home in Tamworth, Ontario on Friday, December 6, 2013. Laszlo (Lance) Marton Galamb passed away at age 79.

Lance made Canada his home after emigrating from Hungary following the 1956 revolution. He is survived by his wife Margaret (Miller) and sons, Eric (Anne) and Troy (Louise), grandchildren, Charlotte, Andrew, Christopher, Danielle and Jennifer. The family would like to thank the nursing care provided by CCAC and the home care provided by Red Cross.

A Memorial Gathering was held at the Royal York Road United Church in Toronto on Tuesday, December 17th from 2pm-4pm. Passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 15, 2013 in a house fire that took his life.

Glenn would have been 61 on December 18th. Glenn was the eldest son of the late Harold Miller of Morven and Sylvia Miller who also passed away in the same tragic fire. Sadly missed by brothers Garry (Angela) of Napanee; Grant (Lisa) of Napanee; Garold (Connie) of Morven and sister Gail Crouse of Village Green in Selby. His brother Gordon also passed away at the same time. Glenn has many nieces and nephews who will miss him, Jen Lyman (Chris) and their children, Trent, Kalika, Jared and Maya, Matthew Crouse (Amber) and their children, Sierra, Camrease, Aslyn and Mattias. The family will receive friends at the Wartman Funeral Home “Napanee Chapel” on Friday, December 20th from 2pm-4pm and 7pm9pm and Saturday morning from 10am-11am prior to the Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 11am. Refreshments to follow.

The Spirit of Christmas – The spirit of Christmas Christmas, to me, is giving to others and seeing decorations and snow on the ground. I like making snow forts with the snow.

On Christmas I like spending time with my family when they come to visit, especially Uncle Brent.

There are lots of Christmas movies to get you in the mood of Christmas, like Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman.

My favourite Christmas movie is The Grinch because at the end of the movie he changes into a good Grinch and isn’t so mean anymore. I love the Grinch I also love watching Arthur’s Christmas because it is funny. I like feeling exiting and happy for Christmas because I get to

see my family and watch good movies.

NOTIFICATION Habitat Regulations for Protecting Species at Risk Ontario is fortunate to have a wide variety of plants and animals. Over 200 of these species, however, are currently ‘at risk’. One of the key threats to their survival is habitat loss.

Under the Endangered Species Act, 2007, the Government of Ontario has passed habitat regulations for Bogbean Buckmoth, Four-leaved Milkweed, Fowler’s Toad, Laura’s Clubtail, Queensnake and Rusty-patched Bumble Bee and an amendment to the existing habitat provision for Pale-bellied Frost Lichen. These provisions will help protect and recover these plants and animals. The regulations come into force on January 1, 2014.

Enterprise 3-5s celebrate winter’s snow Snow days I like snow days because I can make big snow forts and have snowball fights!

I also sometimes have a choice if I want to go to school or not.

I can be very creative with snow.

Winter I like winter because there is lots of space to play outside and run. I mainly like to snowboard with my family and friends. After we walk back and have hot chocolate, then go outside and play. That is why I like winter.

Christmas stories from Holy Name of Mary Christmas Jesus was born in a stable.

That was the only place He can go. Jesus was born on Christmas Day. By: Brenna Maracle, Gr. 1 Christmas One night the shepherds were around the fire. They followed the star to Bethlehem. One king followed the star to Bethlehem. One king met two kings, he said, "Come with me to bring gifts for the wonderful Baby."

Animals saw the star and then they followed it. When they got there, Mary had the baby and He fell asleep.

Jesus is the Baby. Jesus is the Son of God. By: Keegan Murphy, Gr. 1 Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem because Joseph had to pay the taxes. When they got to Bethlehem, Mary was not feeling good because she was ready to the Baby Jesus. That night Jesus was born in the stable because they had no other place to stay.

First the shepherds were afraid. Soon the sky was filled with angels. They sung," Glory to God in the Highest and Peace to His people on earth."

The shepherds brought wool so the Baby wouldn't get cold and the wise kings brought gifts too â&#x20AC;&#x201D; gold, frankincense and myrrh.

When they got there, to Bethlehem, it was night and they asked one of the innkeepers if they could stay there and he had no space. They asked the next innkeeper and he had no space. Joseph and Mary were filled with joy! The three wise men were almost there and they knew they were getting closer. They knew when they got there, the Saviour was born and the three wise men gave them myrrh, frankincense and gold.

The First Christmas Jesus was born on Christmas Day. He was born in Bethlehem in a stable.

The travellers came to see Him. The shepherds came to see Him. The star led the travellers and the shepherds to Baby Jesus.

It was when the sun was down and Mary was not feeling good because she was tired from her trip and she had her child.

The shepherds were watching the sheep and they saw angels. One of the shepherds said, "Hey! There's a star shining in the sky!" and the other two said, "Where?" The three shepherds gathered the sheep to go travel to down town Bethlehem.

And that's how Christmas started.

The Spirit of Christmas, for Centreville Gr. 4/5s The Spirit of Christmas Most people think Christmas is al about receiving gifts, but Christmas is really about giving and spending time with your loved ones.

When you give a gift, you heart is warmed with love.

You don’t need presents to have a wonderful Christmas. Spending time with you family and receiving their love is the best present you could ever get.

Every year at Christmas time my family spend special time together. We make a delicious, mouthwatering gingerbread house, and decorate with sugary candies, minty peppermints, sweet candy canes and delightful chocolate chips. I love smelling the lovely scent of pine tree when we decorate our Christmas tree with glistening glass ornaments, crystal clear icicles, pretty homemade ornament, and our sparkling angel.

We love going speeding down our hill together on our sleds and making giant snowmen with carrot noses, small pebbles for eyes, a piece of dead grass for his joyful smile, and long sticks for his arms. My brother Nicholas and I help mom and dad put up our gorgeous outdoor Christmas decorations. We put up shining multi-colour lights on our house and bushes. There is a dazzling train, sparkling reindeer pulling Santa in his massive sled full of toys, and a glowing chimney with

Santa delivering gifts. That is what my heart tells me the Christmas spirit is.

When I wake to all the presents, it is an amazing and fantastic feeling. After we open our presents, we make cookies and hot chocolate, while the steaming hot chocolate slowly drizzling down my throat.

The spirit of Christmas is about family and friends, the beautifully decorated trees and happiness. On Christmas we give presents and say “thank you” to those who give to us.

Christmas is when we look all around and see trees with many big and beautiful lights, gorgeous green and red decorations, with tinsel and sparklers too.

We see our family and friends happily opening and giving presents. That is what Christmas means to me.

We see a winter wonderland of snow and we see children playing in it. We find exceptional houses lighted up with white, red, green and yellow lights.

Holiday paragraphs from Southview Grade 3s What I can do on the winter break. First, I can play with my friends. First, we can go to the park and slide down the slide. Next we can get our sled and go so fast down a hill. The snow could get in our face Brrrrr that will be cold. After, we can come inside for an hour. We could colour, play ponies, and play dolls. Last, we could have hot chocolate. It will taste delicious like Rolos! Clearly, we have a lot of things to do on the winter break.

Savannah Don’t waste your Christmas vacation playing too many video games, there are more fun things to do. First, you can be a big reader. You could read non-fiction books and learn something new about the world, or you could read fiction books and get a good laugh. For example, you can read Captain Underpants, it will blow your socks off! Next, you could play with your best friends. It’s lots of fun to play with very good friends.

Finally, you can make gingerbread. They are delicious and it’s a great time to spend with family. Clearly, there are lots of fun things to do, so don`t be a couch potato!

Duncan There are many things to do over the winter break.

First, you could go to Florida. You could go swimming and shopping and have a

break from the cold winter.

Next, you could play in the snow. You could have a snow ball fight and build a snowman. Last, you could go tobogganing and go down a steep hill into a snow pile.

All the snow will go everywhere. Clearly, there are many things to do over the winter break.

Ethan On winter break you can do many fun things. First, you could go sledding. Sledding can be really fun as long as you are a good steerer .

Here are some sledding tips.

Try going far but not too far if you go too far you have a L-O-N-G way to walk uphill.

Also, make sure you don’t run into a tree or bush. Second, you could make a snow fort or a snow man. If your snow fort keeps falling down make sure it’s steady and if it’s made for a snow ball fight don’t worry about the sides walls or the back walls all you need is the front wall. Having snow men can be B-O-R-I-N-G so make an obstacle course out of it. Finally, you could play fun games like snow bunnies and lost in the winter forest or arctic wolves.

Clearly, there are many things you could do on winter break.

Mariah Here are three ideas of what to do over the winter break.

First, you could go sledding.

You would go down a really

steep hill. You will go really fast. Also, you can make a snowfort. You can make a seat for yourself. You could also play games like duck, duck, goose or school in the snowfort. Finally, you could have a snowball fight with your parents. You won’t get in trouble but you might get hit too. No more sitting on the couch over the winter break!

Cameron There are many, many things you can do over the Christmas holidays. First, you could go sledding on a snowy day. Another thing that you could do is put my stocking up by the fire place. Finally you could build a tall snow man with your brother and you will build it as tall as you can.

Torie There are four things you do on winter break. First, you can open your presents while you drink hot chocolate. You may hear a lot of screaming because there will be a lot of presents.

Second, you could go sledding with your family then go and get yummy warm donuts. Be careful that you don’t fall off your sled!

Also, you can go skating in your sparkling skates.

Skating is so much fun even if you might slip and fall. Finally, you can make cookies, cupcakes and ginger bread. They are so delicious. These are the many things you can do on winter break instead of being a lazy couch potato.

Tiana There are many things you can do which is make a hot chocolate stand. First, you could sell hot chocolate for

1$ and 25₵. The large for 1$ and small for 25 a cup.

Next, you can give the money away you earned.

You can give the money to people that don’t have that much. Finally, you can ask your mom to make you more hot chocolate. You will be thirsty after all of your hard work. Clearly, you should do something over the break.

Aiden I know three things I could do over the Christmas holiday. First, I could make a hot chocolate stand. I would have the hot chocolate to only be 25₵ and when the day is over I could count up the money and if I have at least 30$ I would give it away to charity. Also, have a cup of super delicious warm hot chocolate. Second, I would go sledding down a huge steep hill and the hill is really icy so I would go down really fast! I would land in a huge pile of snow.

Finally, I could go skating and I would go so fast!! Also my brother and I could play hockey with my mom and dad. My mom would be goalie on my team and dad could be goalie on my brothers team. “We won!!” yelled me and mom. It was 20 and 17. “But we played hockey to have fun.” I said. Clearly, I know fun things to do over the Christmas holiday.

Emily There are lots of games to play over the two week break. First, you could play in the snow. Second, you could make an igloo.

Next, we could have snowball fights. Finally, we could go skating and have fun. We could play hockey and have hot chocolate with marshmallows and it would be delicious.

One Christmas eve, Santa did not come, because Santa got lost in fog.

with him.

The mice were sleeping because it was Christmas night and there was Santa, right in front of their cage.

Santa turned himself into a mouse and quickly scampered away. One of the other mice ran out of the cage behind Santa mouse. It jumped on the sleigh with Santa and flew back to north pole. As soon as Santa sat In the sleigh he turned back into the real Santa .

After all of that Santa delivered all of the toys to the girls and boys and Santa ate all of the cookies and milk.

Santa got kidnapped by Capricorn On Christmas eve, the last house Santa had to visit was a guy named, Bob. At the same time there was a bad guy named Capricorn who was planning to ruin Christmas.

Capricorn was following Santa. He wanted to kidnap him because he only gets coal every Christmas.

Capricorn went in after each delivery Santa made and stole all the presents!

At Bob’s house, he kidnapped Santa and took him to his hideout under Fort Henry 2.

Aaron and Andrew were spies for Santa.

They heard the secret alarm.

They followed the signal.

They found the place and followed Capricorn. They stayed the night and the next day Santa was saved when Capricorn was out.

The presents were all delivered again and Christmas was saved!

Santa gets Kidnapped by the Grinch It was Christmas Eve and it was snowing and cold out. Santa was in the Elves

work shop getting ready for the journey. Santa was getting the sleigh ready when suddenly, somebody showed up in a disguise! It was the Grinch and he grabbed Santa and threw him on the ground. He took him to his cave and threw him in a strange room and that night there was no presents under any Christmas trees.

Christmas was the next night The Grinch was mad because he hated Christmas. Herbie the elf came to rescue Santa because he was getting worried. Herbie stumbled across the cave and found Santa. He was locked up. Herbie said, “the elves are loading the sleigh for tomorrow night!”

Santa heard Herbie and woke up. Herbie took Santa by the arm and helped him back to the workshop. The sleigh was gone! Mrs. Claus went out for Christmas when she thought he wouldn’t be back. Santa went out the next year. Santa said, “ho, ho, ho” and opened his gift and gave Mrs. Claus her gift and the Elves opened their gifts.

“Ho, ho, ho, Merry Christmas.”

The Grinch was gone for good. When he had found Santa escaped he went after him and fell off a cliff.

The Grinch wanted to ruin Christmas. The Grinch found where Santa lived and took him to his lair. A security camera saw this happen and a little boy saw this on the news. He got his mom to drive until he found the Grinch’s lair. The little boy and his mom saw the Grinch’s dog walking home and decided to follow him. The boy saw Santa in a cage. The boy saw the key on a shelf and he tried to get the key with a twig. He

reached out and unlocked the cage and Santa was free and Christmas began.

He was also putting kids on the naughty list. But a boy was very bad so he was the only one on the naughty list and he was very sad. He wanted to be on the good list.

The boy decided that he would start being nice to people. The boy also started let people play with him. Santa didn’t notice though, and the boy was still on the naughty list.

One day Rudolph was out flying for practice. He saw the boy doing nice things for people. Rudolph flew back to the north pole and told Santa about what he had seen.

Santa decided to put the boy on the good list.

On Christmas morning the boy found presents under his tree!

The three Elves named Christie, Suzie, and Freddy had to dig a fake nose out of Santa’s sack and put it on Rudolph.

And they were off into the houses and apartments. Santa delivered all of the people on the good list presents. And the people on the bad list train coal.

Christmas Eve Santa and the elves were at the North Pole. They had finished packing the toys. Then Santa put the toys in his sack and put the sack in the sleigh and he went to deliver the toys.

On the way he ate a brownie and it was good. Then he finally got to his first house and the reindeer landed on the roof.

Santa went down the chimney and got into the house. He went to see if the children in the house were sleeping. Then he went back into the room where the tree was and put down the presents for the children. Then he climbed up the chimney and got in the sleigh and went to his next house. It was not a long way.

When he got there, he went down the chimney and went to the childrens’ rooms and checked that they were sleeping. They were fast asleep, but they were on the naughty list, so he gave them coal and got out of the house. He got in his sleigh and went to the next house. There were a lot of people on the naughty list. He had to get to a lot of houses so he went on, and the house he went to was full of naughty children but he went anyway. He went because they always left cookies and milk!

After he had his cookies and milk, he had to leave and go to the next house.

When he was at his next house, he went down the chimney

and he found his cookies and milk! The children were sleeping so he went and found the tree and put down the presents for them. He climbed up the chimney and went to his last stop. When he was at his last stop he found his cookies and milk! Then he checked to make sure that the children were sleeping. They were and Santa kicked them off their beds and he got in one of their beds and fell asleep. Then the reindeer heard him snoring so they went down the chimney and woke him up. They all went up the chimney and got in the sleigh and went back to the North Pole.

A boy named Bradley had brown hair and brown eyes and dinosaur PJs. He was ready for bed. Santa was coming and he had on his red clothes and his beard was bright white.

When Santa was coming down the Chimney he got stuck and he Bradley woke up. He looked up the chimney and he found Santa.

Bradley asked Santa if he needed help. Santa said, “Yes!” Santa called Mrs. Claus and he asked if she could help him, but Mrs. Claus said, “No!”` Bradley got a rope and wrapped it around Santa’s legs.

He pulled Santa down through the chimney.

And Santa was happy and put me on the good list.

By Hannah Hill Halloween vs Christmas On Christmas eve Santa was asleep and the elves were working. In the North Pole it was dark and cold, then the windows flew open and the door too. Then, all the toys that the elves were working on came to life and they attacked them. Pumpkin Puffed Hair was the most evil and hairiest of them all and the toys loved him. Then Pumpkin Puffed Hair ordered them to take Santa. So they took Santa and they ran away to their hide out. Santa was kidnapped and the elves were knocked out except for Jacob the elf. Jacob flew to Canada on Santa’s sleigh and got some dude named Aaron and Tyler Bozack off of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Then they flew back to the North Pole but they got attacked by Pumpkin Puffed Hair and the toys. Then he made them crash and then they got captured.

When they got to their secret hide out, the reindeer were following them to the hide out. The reindeer went to Santa’s work shop. Then the reindeer made the elves become warriors and they were as hard as rock now! There were two more things that they needed to learn; to be able to have team work and be able to

fly. They would jump off of tables but, they couldn’t fly. The elves were hopeless. Then Tyler Bozack and Aaron found Rudolph the red nose reindeer to try, but he wouldn’t do it because all the other reindeer made fun of him because he had a big red shiny nose. They called him clown face, fat nose and big red nose. This made him feel sad and mad. Then they found Pumpkin Puffed Hair’s Christmas list and all he wanted was thousands of dollars.

So they figured out that he was going to sell all Santa’s toys so they didn’t learn to fly, but they did eventually figure out how to work as a team.

So now they were ready to attack the toys when they were on their way they saw the toys run by them the but they still went to his secret hideout but they were walking forever then they figured out that they were in a snow storm and they had no idea where they were but they still fought through the snow storm then they got out and then Jacob the elf leader looked on his Santa’s workshop tracker and he saw that they were in Russia! So they flew on the reindeers to Santa’s workshop, but it was destroyed but pumpkin puffed hair didn’t find the secret passage to the presents. It was almost nightfall so they decided to fly Santa’s sleigh. They put all the presents in his sleigh, then they flew to his hideout. Then the toys came up from behind then caught them again but then Santa used his magic and got out then freed them, but then they saw him and they chased him all the way to Russia again! So Santa called the reindeers. Then Santa and the elves attacked them with toy guns. It didn’t work, so Santa used a magic bomb then pumpkin puffed became a very hairy elf. Then Santa used a trick that made them not evil but then they needed to make them not alive. They thought, then they figured out that they were still in Russia.

Then they decided to destroy them, but how? They thought to get the reindeers to step on them so they did and it worked. Now it was time to fly and give out presents! As they went Santa said, “ HO HO HOooo!”
