Santa Claus has scheduled a busy day for himself this Saturday, planning a full day of activities as he makes the trek from the North Pole to Greater Napanee. Along with anchoring the annual Parade of Lights, St. Nick will be hosting an early morning public skate and pancake breakfast at the Strathcona Paper Centre. “From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. we’ll have the pancake breakfast and then in the banquet hall as well from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. will be Christmas crafts for the kids,” said Bethany Lessard, youth programming and special events assistant with Greater Napanee. “The public skating portion will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., free of charge.” Admission for the pancake breakfast is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Like the skating, the crafts are free of charge. They will, however, be collecting donations of non-perishable food, toys for the toy drive, snow suits and boots as well as letters to Santa. Later that evening Santa will hop in his sleigh and serve as the big finale to the Parade of Lights, which features a bit of an earlier start time this year, getting underway at 5:30 p.m. Organizers are hoping the earlier start time will lead to a bit warmer of an evening. As has become the custom, the parade will begin at Napanee District Secondary School on Belleville Road to West Street, turning left on Dundas Street.

OPP step up RIDE programs during festive season
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Drivers would be wise to plan ahead if they plan to drink this holiday season as a Napanee OPP RIDE check point could pop up anytime, anywhere. Now in full swing, the annual Festive RIDE (Reducing Impaired Driving Everywhere) means an increase in roadside stops throughout the region with officers making sure drivers are sober, alert and paying attention to the road. “When you combine somebody who maybe is a little bit affected by alcohol with poor driving conditions, there’s a higher chance you could have an accident,” said Napanee OPP Constable Jeremy Doolan. Because the holiday season means more office and family get-togethers mixed with possibly slippery conditions, Cst. Doolan says officers are scheduled to set

It takes a long time, depending how much you drank.” Sober drivers, on the other hand, have nothing to fear when they turn a corner and see the flashing lights of a RIDE program. They may even receive a free knitted toque from the officers, donated by Diane Ford. They come with a written message on a piece of paper that reads ‘Thanks for using your head. Spread the word don’t and drive’ pinned to the toque. Looking at the statistics Cst. Doolan says there’s an alarming number of motorists on the 401 who Adam Prudhomme-Staff blow over the legal limit. Doolan encourage all drivers to report suspicious driving. For those planning a night out on the town, it never hurts to plan ahead. “I’m glad to hear Operation Red Nose is back in play,” said Cst. Doolan, referring to the program which sees volunteers offer free drives to those who call into the service. The program is back and running in Kingston after a one-year absence. “A lot of the traffic we get coming into Kingston goes through Napanee and into Loyalist Township. I’d like to see more (programs like that). For more on the program visit www.kingston.org/rednose. Aside from the obvious risks, those that do drink and drive could have to pay dearly even without causing an accident. Those that blow over the legal limit are looking at a 90-day licence suspension right off the bat with the possibility of charges, fines and even jail time. A driver may also face the costs of installing a breathalyzer into their ignition key if ordered to do so by the court. “It’s just not a pleasant experience,” said Doolan.

J.M. Parrott Centre celebrates a decade BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
REATER Napanee’s John M. Parrott Centre celebrated its 10-year anniversary last week with recognition from local dignitaries and federal accreditation. The celebration took place Friday afternoon, exactly 10 years to the day when the Lenadco Home residents made the move to the newly built John M. Parrott Centre. “The residents had breakfast as usual in their Lenadco Home and by the evening they were enjoying a roast beef dinner in their new dinning areas. The move took six hours and 41 trips by bus,” said County Warden Gord Schermerhorn during the celebration. Six residents who moved to the Parrott Centre that day still reside in the home. Today, the centre employs 94 staff to ensure the success of the centre — many of which moved to the John M. Parrott Centre from Lenadco. “That is truly incredible and says so much about the commitment of staff and their legacy of compassion and care for the residents here,” Schermerhorn said. Schermerhorn gave a brief history on the John M. Parrott Centre, noting some of the accomplishments the centre has received since being built. “Last December, Accreditation

of the John M. Parrott residents’ council, said she enjoys the space and brightness the centre provides. “I was used to a small environment at (my previous residence) and this is much bigger. It’s very nice. My mother was here for seven years, she moved from Lenadco over to here and she liked it very well,” said MacGregor. “It’s a lovely home and anybody that can get in should do so.” Prior to the John M. Parrott Centre, Lennox and Addington County opened the Lenadco Home in 1971 with space for 76 residents. After four years the home expanded to accommodate 160 people but demand continued to grow so plans for a new home began. Building began in May 2004 and took about 20 months for Doornekamp Construction, based out of Odessa, to complete. Local residents Jack and Bernice Parrott made a donation of $1 million dollars. The Parrott family was among the first settlers in the county and Jack’s grandfather, John, was an active member in the community. Dear Friend:
As the Christmas season approaches, it is my privilege to invite you to partner with The Salvation Army to make a memorable Christmas celebration for those in need, by giving a contribution to the 2015 Christmas Appeal.
Because of last year’s generous donors, The Salvation Army was able to assist numerous families, helping them maintain a sense of dignity and providing hope in seemingly hopeless situations. Poverty is no respecter of persons, and your 2015 gift will make the difference to someone this Christmas and into the coming year.
In the midst of all busyness of the Christmas season, please take a moment to make a donation and experience the joy that comes with helping others.
Have a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year
On behalf of Greater Napanee Emergency Services we would like to thank all who participated in the 2015 Haunted House. With your help we donated 1260 lbs of food to our local Salvation Army Food Bank.

Festive bookmaking planned for next Museum Kids BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Local artist Paula Brooks will be on hand for a festive edition of the Lennox and Addington County Museum Kids program this Saturday. Under the guidance of Brooks, the children will have the opportunity to construct their own holiday colouring booklet. They’ll follow some simple steps to bound their own book using pre-made rubber stamps, story paper and thread. The end result will make for a keepsake or the perfect Christmas present. “The paper will already be printed in three different themes,” said Brooks. “They’ll be able to assemble the pages and then create their own cover page. It gives them the basics for how books are made.” Brooks says the program is aimed for ages four and up and can go to any age depending on skill and interests. While the main goal is to have fun, Brooks says the
participants will also learn a bit about how the books they see every day are made. As an added bonus, at the end of the workshop they get to keep their creations. “The can come up with their own cover page,” said Brooks. “We’ll be providing stamps, ink and everything else. They have three different themes that they can choose from. They just have to bring their imagination.” Art comes naturally to Brooks as she operates her own design company PS Designs. She also runs Bark’n Up The Green Tree, which is a bakery that specializes in holistic green, gluten-free, nut-free dog treats. When not working as those ventures she creates handcrafted earth-minded apparel, collar accessories and collars from up-cycled and re-purposed materials. The Museum Kids event gets underway at 10 a.m. and is free of charge. It will be the latest in the ongoing monthly program which features a different family-friendly workshop. The museum is located at 97 Thomas St. E in Napanee.

EDITORIAL
Climate action, not words ‘Canada is back’ is the refrain being heard at the United Nations Climate Summit in Paris for the past few days. When it comes to climate change, however, it could be argued that Canada was never really ‘there’ to begin with. While the Conservative government of Stephen Harper has been steadily criticized for being AWOL on the climate file, the leadership provided by the Liberal administrations of Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin were hardly better. Ambitious emissions targets were established, then largely ignored. Maybe some better phraseology is in order. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s performance in Paris has been criticized in some quarters for being long on rhetoric but short on substance when it comes to combatting climate change. That may be true — although we’ll have to wait and see on that score. Remember, his government has only been in office for just more than a month. It can be forgiven if his climate change plan isn’t exactly robust. As time rolls on, however, the less that can be used as an excuse. Further, a majority of Canadians are looking to this government for active leadership on the climate file, if public opinion polls are to be believed. Trudeau and the governing Liberals have a mandate to do more to reduce carbon emissions, so he has a responsibility to act, and to lead. A common argument against action is this: the largest carbon emitters — China, the U.S., India, etc. — need to rein in their ‘contributions’ to climate change, otherwise any Canadian attempts to curb carbon emissions is a waste of time. On that, we have a few thoughts. First, the fact that Canada contributes a relatively small amount to global carbon footprint is hardly an excuse to do nothing. Further, Canada is one of the largest per capita emitters on the planet. Make no mistake, we’re part of the problem. Second, if there’s an opportunity to get those major emitters on board, it’s at this climate summit. It’s there where we’ll have a chance to spur global action to (hopefully) halt and someday reverse the damage that’s being done. Without stepping up and showing some climate leadership, we’re hardly in a position to preach about what other countries can and should do in their own backyards. So there’s an opportunity here to make some headway. However, if it’s going to be more about photo ops and fuzzy sentiment rather than actual, realistic direction moving forward, it will all be for naught. Canadians have seen that movie before. Most of the world leaders have already left Paris while international delegates continue to try to finalize a meaningful deal. It won’t be easy, but we no longer have the luxury of time, or the luxury to listen to more political hot air.
Letter to the Editor
Tax committee begins its work Although the first meeting was well published there were only 10 people in attendance (of which three were councillors). To me, this turnout was very disappointing considering the great importance of the issue of fair taxation. If literally nobody attends these important meetings then how will anyone be able to convey to their representatives (any of the six members) what their views are, what their ideas are, what they agree or disagree with, and what suggestions there may be depending on the proceedings of the meetings? Here is a short version of what I believe the first meeting was all about. Hopefully this will be help-
ful to the residents of Greater Napanee to help make you aware of what can be expected by the tax policy review committee. A committee of seven people comprising of a chair and six volunteers from the community will debate the tax issues. Nov. 25th was a meeting for all members to become acquainted with one another and to set the stage for how to proceed moving forward. The term goes from now until the end of April 2016. There will be no deputations unless there are extenuating circumstances. It was established that four to five meetings will likely take place to deal with the tax issue, the goal being that the chair will prepare

an independent report to council, summarizing the results of these meetings. Following receipt of the report to council, there will be two further meetings held for the purpose of receiving public input. In the end, the chair will prepare a report of recommendations to council who will then decide on a plan of action. Please make time to attend future meetings. Stay tuned. Hopefully this committee approach will bring an end to the tax problems and that council will finally put this issue to rest once for all. Pierre Cliche plcliche@sympatico.ca

Design with Christmas Spirit Whether you are already decorating for Christmas or still savouring the last lingering days of fall, it’s that time of year when we really want to be inside nesting and getting cozy around the house. Here are some simple ways to bring some Christmas cozy into your home right now and extend through the winter. Pick a theme. Christmas decorations can go beyond the traditional red and green with beautiful results. Try a holiday decorating theme such as vintage, allwhite, gold or natural. Give your home some holiday curb appeal by adorning the façade with lights. Or, you can add Christmas cheer to your front yard with topiaries. Think simple when decorating by opting for greenery or garland around the front entry. If you’re decorating outside, you might as well enjoy the holiday splendor inside as well. Bring out the stockings, Santas, elves and nativity scenes to truly deck your halls. There is nothing like walking into a home all decorated — it evokes such a warm, inviting feeling. I recently walked into a client’s home who had decorated for Christmas. She had a wonderful collection of Santa Clauses that had taken some time to accumu-

If there is no more room on your tree for all your decorations, then turn the ornaments that didn’t make it onto the tree into shining ornament candles to display in other rooms. When decorating, keep in mind that not everything has to be used for its intended purpose. A little creativity goes a long way. Add some festive colour with a Christmas classic. Poinsettias can be used individually for a burst of colour or grouped together for a lush look. Simply lighting candles (or using battery-operated candles) throughout the house makes a home feel magical this time of year. Do a quick walk-through of your house and note any areas still lacking in holiday charm. Enjoy the holiday season, let the Christmas season evolve simply and slowly in your home. Enjoy every moment of the season before you rush on to the next holiday “to-do list.” Merola Tahamtan is an Interior Stylist in Home & Business Design, Home Staging, Painting, Colour Consultation, Organization and Window Treatments. Travel adventures gone wrong OR reasons I cannot fully explain, one of my favourite literary sub-genres is the vacation thriller. Best described as ‘travel adventures gone wrong’, these books feature young characters with a lust for adventure who travel abroad only to end up in precarious and often life or death situations. The Blue by Lucy Clarke, a newly-published novel, is a great example of this. After experiencing a family betrayal, Lana leaves her home in England with her BFF Kitty. They set out on an backpacking trip through Asia, looking for freedom — and that’s exactly what they find when they are invited onto The Blue, a 50-foot yacht making its way from the Philippines to New Zealand. The crew is made up of a group of travellers from all over the world, also bitten by wanderlust. It isn’t difficult to become accustomed to the lifestyle of remote island hopping and rum-filled nights relaxing on deck. Lana soon finds, however, that tensions are mounting.

When one of the crew disappears overboard, the secrets that brought them together start to unravel. Not everyone is going to make it off of The Blue alive. The Ruins by Scott Smith is definitely more horror than suspense thriller (and definitely one for the squeamish to avoid!) but it still follows the standard Coles’ vacation thriller formula: young people abroad getting themselves into a heap of trouble. In this particular case, four American college students are on vacation in Mexico where they meet several other tourists from all over the world. A German named Mathis tells them that his brother followed an archaeologist into the jungle for a dig, and that he needs to retrieve him before their flight home. They decide to join him and set out on an impromptu adventure following a hand drawn map to a remote location. Soon they find that they have stumbled upon something they
shouldn’t have. Trapped, they struggle against a surprising enemy as they endure thirst, hunger and injuries and have to consider extreme actions in order to survive. In The Beach by Alex Garland, we follow Richard, a twenty-something backpacker, finding his way to Bangkok. He checks into a cheap Notes hostel where he meets a seemingly crazy neighbour who introduces himself as Daffy. In his rambling, Daffy mentions a remote island, located in an off-limits part of Thailand. On this island is a beach he describes as a perfect utopia. Naturally, Richard decides to go there with the help of (another) hand drawn map. The island is indeed as idyllic as Daffy describes, however, two back-to-back accidents soon throw a wrench into the perfect island lifestyle. From there, the mini-civilization developed on the island becomes a sinkhole of madness. This novel has been

described as “Golding’s Lord of the Flies for a twenty-orthirty-something audience.” A House in The Sky, a memoir by Amanda Lindhout, is a real-life vacation thriller. Lindhout writes about her childhood in Alberta spent reading National Geographic magazines and trying to stay out the way of her dysfunctional family. After high-school, she moves to Calgary to work on and off as a cocktail waitress, a lifestyle that can accommodate her wanderlust. Every trip abroad she takes is more and more off the beaten path of Western travel until finally, in Mogadishu, her luck runs out — she is kidnapped by Islamic extremists. This book is perhaps more terrifying than its fictional counterparts! A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago December 8, 1965
n The Napanee Post office was getting ready for the Christmastime deluge of mail — and they were even finding some extra space to accommodate the flow. Post office officials said they’d use space at the Napanee Armory to establish a parcel post depot to handle all the incoming parcels. The Napanee Postmaster, H.J. O’Connor, said that those who got parcel slips in their mailbox would have to go to the Armory to pick up their item. (The Armory would eventually be torn down and a new post office built on the site.) n Napanee Mayor Lorne Smart was not pleased after a local judge dismissed a case involving a teen motorist. Napanee Police charged the boy after he was caught squealing his tires downtown. The judge, however, threw out the charges. “What can you do at your own level when he handles a case like this?” Smart wondered at a council meeting. “We criticize our police because they don’t do anything about this nuisance type of driving. When they do, the magistrate dismisses the case.”

n Retail merchants who were being supplied with bargain-priced cigarettes might have unwittingly found themselves on the wrong side of the law. Provincial officials indicated that the reason why the suppliers were offering low-cost cigarettes is because they weren’t applying the Ontario tobacco tax to the cost of the smokes. The officials also said that one Napanee merchant would be facing charges. Retail merchants dealing in untaxed cigarettes would be subject to a fine of up to twice the tax that should have been paid and up to six months behind bars. n Murray Gorham won the nomination to carry the provincial Progressive Conservative banner in the next election in FrontenacAddington. The Pittsburgh Township lawyer would face incumbent Liberal MPP J. Earl McEwen in the upcoming election, which was expected to happen in the spring. “You’ll have the hardest working Tory candidate you’ve seen in this riding for a long time,” Gorham told the crowd of 750 people gathered at the nomination meeting at Frontenac Secondary School in Kingston Township.

Town tax committee goes over basics at first session Staff Reporter
At the first Greater Napanee Taxation Review Committee meeting last week a plan of action was set out, keeping within the April 2016 timeframe. The first committee meeting took place in the Greater Napanee council chambers last Wednesday. It was a three-hour meeting that consisted of introductions and planning. “A process was agreed
on to enable the chairman to select comparable municipalities to review and this should be done before our next meeting,” committee member Hubert Hogle told The Napanee Beaver this week. One item of business was decided on during the meeting though, and that dealt with whether Taxation Review Committee meetings should be recorded and uploaded to the Greater Napanee website. Council discussed the topic at recent council meet-

ings and decided the meetings would only be recorded if all six members agreed. Last Wednesday, five of the six members agreed but one person was opposed to recording the meetings, which means meetings will not be uploaded to the website. About 10 people attended the meeting, including Ward 5 Councillor Shaune Lucas, Ward 4 Councillor
Carol Harvey and Deputy Mayor Marg Isbester. Committee members are: Ted Davie, Les Howell and Axel Thesberg representing rural; and Hans Bichsel, Hubert Hogle and Robert Marriott representing urban. Gary Scandlan, of Watson & Co, based out of Mississauga, chairs the meeting. “I think we have six good people on the committee.

Our chairman is very capable and has dealt with this type of issue before. There was a feeling of cordiality throughout the meeting and
I am optimistic that the committee will see this through to completion with a recommendation that I hope council can accept,” said Hogle.

New network puts focus on young professionals
BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
Greater Napanee now has its own Young Professionals Network, offering networking and mentorship opportunities for young adults looking to get involved. Valerie Watts and Brad Way began discussions on the group about a year ago. Since then it has garnered the success of a number social events and about 15 members. “For so many young people in our community, learning to network takes practice and it takes bravery when you’re first getting going. With GNYPN, it’s really giving that safe space to practice that, said Watts. Way agreed, saying the GNYPN has greatly helped him in his career and personal confidence. “When I got into business, that was one of the biggest challenges for me was to go into a space where many of these people are 20 and 30 years older than I am and feeling very uncomfortable because, what do I have to offer to even say? And that’s probably wrong thinking, but I can’t be the only one thinking that, said Way. Watts said the group is
Ashley Espinoza-Staff
Valerie Watts and Brad Way say their new Young Professionals Network has already organized several social events and attracted about 15 members. It has a Facebook page: GNYPN - Greater Napanee Young Professionals Network. also a great way to grow and learn in your personal life. “Whenever I go to YPN, people are talking about maybe buying their first home, they’re talking about student loans, having young families, where in those other groups people are in other stages of life, Watts explained. GNYPN is geared to
help the next generation of leaders in the community. The main goals are to: provide opportunities for community engagement, social involvement, grow business and economic interests, improve commitment to environmental practices, personal and professional development, and connect with municipal and county
governments. “We’re in such an accelerated time of growth and it’s an exciting time in this community. We have so many community groups, we have the Rotary Club of Napanee, we have the Chamber of Commerce, and we have other service clubs that are really geared toward this older population
of people that are helping move this community forward, said Watts, explaining why the group is necessary in Napanee. Already GNYPN has helped to mentor young adults, provide information catered to the needs of the younger generation, and assisted young professionals to have a strong voice in the community. “We had an all-candidates social, where we saw about 30 people go to learn more about their candidates and give them opportunity to ask questions that were geared toward people under 40. If you look at the all candidates meeting, the demographic was above 40, said Watts. Way said GNYPN is working toward becoming a recognized organization to present questions and concerns young people are facing in Napanee. He hopes GNYPN grows to be able to voice concerns and affect decision-making at town council and among other municipal committees. In just under a year, the GNYPN has hosted a number of socials and mentorships opportunities from independent business owners, financial advisors, correctional service workers, those in funeral services,
social service workers, nonprofit agencies, the trades, real estate, and more. “I think it’s an important element that this group isn’t for business owners, this is for everybody. A lot of the groups that I’ve belonged to in the past really focus on an element of either business ownership or lead management within a company. There are many young professionals that are just not there yet, and that’s okay, this is a stepping stone toward creating those relationships, said Way. “You could be a server, you could be a plumber, you could be a farmer, you could own your business; it does not matter what you do. If you’re looking to be engaged and looking for a comfortable way to be among peers in the community, this is the spot for you, Watts added. “We don’t turn anyone away, anyone who wants to connect and engage. The group is most easily accessed through its Facebook page: GNYPN – Greater Napanee Young Professionals Network. Social events and volunteer opportunities and are shared on this page for the general public and members. Those wishing to join the GNYPN can do so through the Facebook page.

Something for the birds t was three years ago when I received a call from my friend David Love, the president of Bird Studies Canada, asking me if I would be interested in meeting some of their people and hosting a ‘bird-athon’. The meeting was very impactful indeed and as a result I have learned so much about backyard birding that I almost feel like an expert. Well, not really. Fact is, I now know people like Jody Allair, a resident BSC biologist and science educator, who has forgotten more than I will ever learn about wild birds. And believe me, Jody does not forget much. Here are some highlights of what I have learned: Birds do not need us to feed them. Many well intentioned feeders of birds (ver-
I
sus ‘bird feeders’) believe that wild birds become dependant on us for food. Other than, perhaps, the coldest days of the year and the ones with the deepest snowfall, birds are very capable of finding food from natural sources. They are much like us in that they will take the easiest path to a meal and if it happens to be at your feeder that is where they will congregate. The good news is that you are free to go on vacation and not keep the bird feeders full, without feeling guilty. Use the appropriate seed. Birds are foragers: they find food in some of the most unlikely places, like the seed heads of ornamental grasses in your yard. Consider what kinds of birds you wish to attract to your yard and put out the appropriate seed in your

feeders. Here is a short list from Bird Studies Canada: Black oil sunflower/premium mixed seed attracts cardinals, black-capped chickadees, mourning doves, dark-eyed Juncoes, song sparrows and common grackles (I have learned
Mark Cullen The Green File that every bird in the kingdom has a beneficial role to play in the scheme of things, grackles inclusive). Suet and bird peanuts (versus peanuts for human consumption, which is a nono as birds should not have salt – something else that I learned) attract blue jays, red-breasted nuthatchs, downy woodpeckers, whitebreasted nuthatches, and hairy woodpeckers. Nyjer/Black oil sunflower seed attracts the house finch, American goldfinch, purple finch, common redpoll and pine siskin. Use a nyjer feeder and watch the bird popula-
tion scrap over who gets the spoils first. Entertaining, granted, in a passive way. This is not like the latest movie release of Star Wars. Fruit attracts the American Robin. Note that much of the fruit on your crabapples and mountain ash trees will be foraged by robins who decide that it is a good idea to stay here over winter. They usually strip a fruit bearing tree clean after the first heavy snow fall. Plants. There are so many plants that birds love that I can’t list them all here. Truth is, the seeds of their favourite plants are what they are really interested in. Broadly speaking the following plants are bell ringers for attracting birds: ornamental grasses, Joe Pye weed, Echinacea, cedars and rudbeckia. And when you are shopping at your favourite garden retailer this coming spring be sure to look for plant labels that state ‘attracts birds’. Water. This is the single most important feature that you can add to your yard in your effort to attract birds (apart from a full bird feeder). Birds need water to

drink and bathe. Simple as that. Once again, they have a few things in common with people. A half-barrel or a full blown pond and stream works wonders. I have five bird ‘baths’ in my yard at last count. They use them all. Shelter. Birds need shelter to breed and for protection from cold, wind, snow and their enemies like hawks, falcons and neighbourhood cats. Especially cats. The best protection that you can provide wild birds is evergreens that grow tall and thick. Cedars, spruce, fir and like all work like a charm. Keep in mind that bird feeders should be located within a meter of a window or more than 10 meters from a window. Within a meter birds cannot build up enough speed to hurt themselves too seriously if they hit the window and more than 10 meters away provides them an opportunity to veer away from the window when they realize that it is not a thoroughfare to another part of your garden. Bird Studies Canada is the largest and most
sophisticated organization of its kind. There are over 20 full time employees, including several well educated and enthusiastic ornithologists who study birds very carefully. Each year these specialists depend on the public — people like you and me — to help them determine the migration patterns of all wild bird species and population growth and decline. You can become a ‘citizen scientist’ by taking part in the largest bird count in the country in December. The Christmas Bird Count is conducted between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5 inclusive. All you have to do is log on to www.birdscanada.org to learn more and register. It is fun, educational and who knows, you could become hooked and skip the trip south this winter in favour of bird watching. Mark Cullen appears on Canada AM every Wednesday morning at 8:40. He is the Lawn and Garden expert for Home Hardware. Sign up for his free monthly newsletter at www.markcullen.com.

Enterprise Public School is now significantly closer to paying for new playground equipment thanks to a contribution from Hydro One. On Thursday, Hydro One chipped in with $5,000 toward the cost of the play structure. The school accepted the contribution with a special thank-you assembly.
The school’s parent advisory council applied for the funds through Hydro One’s Power Play program, which promotes active lifestyles for children and youth. The funds for Power Play grants come from shareholder profits, not from the base rate paid by Hydro One customers. Successful applicants are selected by a special committee of Hydro One
employess from different departments. The applications are evaluated on a number of different criteria, including total cost, other funders and potential impact. Grants can be for up to $25,000. Enterprise Public School principal Chad Taylor said that Hydro One was one of several groups or individuals that contributed to the fundraising campaign.

Credit union’s book sale program helps Hospice BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
A new book sale program has helped to provide bereavement programming to children and youth in Lennox and Addington County. Napanee Kawartha Credit Union started a used book sale at the branch about a month ago and was able to raise $375 for Hospice Lennox and Addington all through donated books. Hospice was also able to secure a Community Involvement Program Funding grant from KCU, adding up to $1,375 to go toward child and youth bereavement programming, including launching a new Mobile Bereavement Box Resource Kit. “This past year we offered two child bereavement sessions and in early 2016 we will be launching our Mobile Bereavement Boxes. These tool kits will be distributed throughout the community, to student support workers in the schools, early years centre and church groups,” said Kim Sunstrum, Hospice executive director. Each kit is filled with bereavement resources, including storybooks, colouring books, journals, pam-

Sunstrum said it’s thanks to community endeavors and local donations that make these types of programs possible. “Programs like this aren’t
funded by the LHIN (Local Health Integration Network), the LHIN only funds our visiting program. Any of the extra programs that we provide are strictly done on fundraising and of course grants like this one,” Sunstrum said. KCU has supported Hospice L&A for years. Cindy Campbell, branch manager, said it’s a worthwhile cause the branch will continue to support. Last year KCU held a barbecue but Campbell
said the book sale was such a success that they plan to run it again next year. “Reading is so important and everybody is looking for a new book so it just makes sense to do a book sale,” said Campbell. “The children’s books went really well, they were by donation only. Then we had our grown up books that we priced $3 for hard cover and $2 for soft cover. We had quite a few members that when they saw the cause they weren’t too concerned
about buying a book, they just wanted to donate to the cause.” KCU was able to surpass it’s initial goal of raising $350. Campbell has boxed up all the leftover books for next year’s book sale. KCU provided Community Involvement Program Funding grants to Hospice, the Napanee District Community Foundation, and the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital Foundation.

KASSAA Winter Season Begins
Raiders trounce Islanders Napanee unbeaten in six BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
ecember is off to a great start for the Napanee Raiders, who posted their most lopsided victory of the season Tuesday night over the visiting Gananoque Islanders. Riding five third period goals, the Raiders cruised to a 9-0 victory and for the time being woke up this morning in first place in the Empire B League. Austin Boulard and Zack Revell accounted for the game's first four goals, the first three coming on the powerplay and the last shorthanded. “I thought we executed (the power-play) better tonight,” said Raiders head coach Mike Hartwick, who saw his team go 4-for-7 on the man advantage. “It was nice we had a variety of guys out there. A lot of guys shared the power-play which was nice to see.”

Napanee’s Cullen Hinds is all smiles after scoring the Raiders’ sixth goal of the night, part of Tuesday’s 9-0 rout of the visiting Islanders. The nine goal advantage marked Napanee’s biggest win of the season. Tyler Romain scored at the 2:45 mark of the third to put the game out of reach while Cullen Hinds, Aidan McFarland, Chad Caskenette and Trent Schutt each potted a goal late in the frame. The latter
three goals all happened in just over a minute as the Islanders appeared to roll over and wave the white flag. The goal was a nice welcome for Schutt, who was playing his first game of the season with the
Raiders after serving as an AP with the team last year. The 17-year-old Bancroft native played 13 games with the Junior A Wellington Dukes this season.

Bantam BB, Atom AE Stars strike silver Both clubs qualify for Int’l Silver Stick Beaver Sports
n paper, the K&C Bobcat Services Napanee Bantam BB Stars probably didn’t have much of a shot at the Silver Stick Regional Tournament in Midland this past weekend. Strong team play, stellar goaltending and timely goals, however, allowed the Stars to hoist the championship banner as well as punch their ticket to the International Silver Stick Tournament in Port Huron, MI, in January. During their weekendlong hot streak, the Stars went 4-0-1, including two wins over teams that hadn’t lost a game in league play before the tournament. The Stars clinched the championship on Sunday
O
afternoon, hanging on against the Orillia A Terriers for a 4-3 win. Napanee’s Ryan Kirkpatrick got Napanee on the scoreboard 30 seconds into the game, converting on assists from Aidan Joe and Nicholas Kennelly. Napanee then dodged a bullet when the Terriers put one past netminder Bailey Maracle — a fraction of a second after the referee had blown the play dead. The goal was immediately disallowed. Kirkpatrick would add another in the dying moments of the first, burying an unassisted goal. Cal DuChene picked the pocket of a Terrier defenseman in the middle of the second period to go in and score, staking the Stars to a 3-0 lead. Orillia got that goal back to make it 3-1, only to see Kirkpatrick complete the hat trick before the end of the period. Already outshot 19-11 through two periods, the Stars faced an onslaught by
the Terriers in the final frame, who came out hitting hard and creating chances. Orillia managed to score two more — including a goal with less than a minute to play — but in the end couldn’t get enough pucks behind Maracle. With his 28-save performance, Maracle earned game MVP honours. The championship win was the capper on what had been a remarkable tourney for the Stars, who earned a berth in the final with a 3-2 overtime win over the Oshawa A Minor Generals earlier that day. In that game, Kirkpatrick earned game MVP honours, notching his first hat trick of the day. He sealed Oshawa’s fate about three minutes into the OT period, converting on passes from DuChene and Liam Wilkinson. The goal came seconds after the team killed off a four-minute penalty.

Goaltender Murray Craig made several key saves for Napanee to earn the win. Napanee went 2-0-1 through the round-robin portion of the tourney. They opened on Friday night with a tight 2-0 win over the Penatanguishine BB Flames, who only lost their first game of the year earlier that day. Kirkpatrick opened the scoring for Napanee, capitalizing on a power-play opportunity in the third
period on passes from Adam Burger and Ketcheson. Ketcheson would assist on Kirkpatrick’s second goal of the game later on in the period to salt away the win. Maracle not only earned the shutout but game MVP honours as well. Napanee then faced off against the Barrie A Junior Colts — last year’s allOntario champions — Saturday morning in Game 2. After Barrie jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Napanee clawed back into the game in the third period. Josh Cudd cut the Colts’ lead in half with a goal; Kirkpatrick and Burger assisted on the play. terhawks to have any shot at making the semifinals, the Stars came out flying to win 4-1. DuChene earned game MVP honours with two goals and an assist, while Adam Burger also notched two goals and an assist — including a crucial empty-netter that ultimately gave Napanee the goals it needed to beat out Barrie in goal differential. Kirkpatrick assisted on the fourth goal. Heading into the tournament, the Stars notched two wins in league play — an 8-0 win over the Loyalist Jets on Thursday night and a 14-1 win over the Tweed Hawks on Wednesday night. The Stars won’t have much time to rest. They’re on the road to face the league-leading Douro Dukes on Friday night (8:30 p.m. puck drop) before hosting the Ennismore Eagles in Napanee Saturday (5 p.m. puck drop). n The Napanee Calderwood Automation Atom AE Stars also captured a banner in a Silver Stick Tournament this weekend, this one taking place in Haliburton. Competing against teams from Haliburton, Muskoka, Stirling and Picton, the boys went undefeated in round-robin play. Scoring 16 goals against their competition and allowing only three, they moved to the finals on Sunday. Goals from Karter Vermilyea and Nick Lamarche secured the team’s 2-0 win against the Prince Edward County Kings. Marking a first tournament win for these boys, it is with great excitement that they will move forward to the finals to be held in Pelham in the new year. The bench staff of the team, including Matt Jarmin, Adam Rivers, Gary Clarke, Wayne Vallier and Jeff South, are exceptionally proud of the team’s accomplishment this weekend, their perseverance with skill development, their

Team members include Aiden Vallier (goalie), Luke Jarmin, Caleb South, Anthony Nugent and Karter Vermilyea on defense. The forwards on the team include Ethan Boutilier, Connor McGinnis, Jayden Holden, Tristan Nijssen, Jake Vanberkel, Seth Rivers, Duncan Clarke, Nick Lamarche and Zered Haller. n On Wednesday the Peewee AE Stars were invited to face the PEC Kings in an exhibition game. The game ended in a 3-3 tie. Goals were scored by Austin Catena, Dawson Wales and Assistant Captain Oronathye Green. Assists went to Braden Bannon and Dawson Wales. Jacob East and Nathaniel Cinnamon split the netminding duties. The Stars went on the road to Haliburton for their Silver Stick tournament this past weekend. Game 1 had the boys facing the very
strong Temiskaming Shores Puck Hounds. Cinnamon went the distance holding the Hounds down to 1-0 till the end of the second period. Unfortunately the Stars could not find the back of the Hound net and Temiskaming won 4-0. Game 2 had the Stars facing the South Muskoka Bears. The boys battled hard and came out with a 2-2 tie. Wales and Johnny Hearns scored for the Stars with assists going to Catena, Ethan Martin and Bailey Cook-Martin (two). East went the distance in net. Game 3 had fans sitting on the edge of their seats. The Stars came out strong against their regular season rivals, the Durham Crusaders. Cinnamon had the Durham team frustrated, stopping all but one of the many shots on net until a series of unfortunate events unraveled, with three minutes left in the third. A Durham player skated hard to the Stars net and just squeaked the puck

MEMORIAMS
coreY - In memory of Shirley Corey, 1937-2014. If roses grow in Heaven, Lord, please pick a bunch for us, Place them in our mother’s arms And tell her they are from us. Tell her we love and miss her And when she turns to smile Place a kiss upon her cheek And hold her for a while, Because remembering her is easy, We do it every day, But there is an ache within our hearts That will never go away. Sadly missed by her family.

calling 613-354-7138. New members to the club will be given a beginner clinic with the main one slated for Jan. 3 at 1 p.m. NDCC’s annual Ladies Open last Saturday was another success thanks to Heather Ramshaw and her committee of Liz and Andy Graham with a special thanks to Lana Jaeger for her wonderful decorating of the club for the holidays. Ramshaw started her presentations by thanking Sponsor’s Chris Ramshaw, Deb Currier, Nancy Wilkie,
Gayle Johnson, Playground Licensed Childcare (Christine Perry), Shelley Alkenbrack and Brenda Kerr. The ladies for the third year, played for the Eleanor Ramshaw Memorial Trophy donated by the Ramshaw Family in honour of a special wife, mother, friend and fellow curler. The trophy was presented to Dianne Wylie’s team from the Royal Kingston Curling Club. The next top teams were Heather Ramshaw’s rink, Cheryl McBain’s team of Ottawa and Gayle Johnson of Napa-
nee. Members out and about curling in an area bonspiel are encouraged to let league directors know the information so they can pass your results on to the community. The ‘friendly’ curling games with Gananoque consisting of four NDCC's teams playing against four of their teams organized by Jane and Robert Hough was a lot of fun. In Gananoque two NDCC teams, Hough and Dunham, won their games while the other two Sharpe and Eastlake let the host
team win. Back at Napanee, two local teams, Eastlake and Sharpe (Currier), won while Hough and Dunham were gracious to our guests. Following the club's semiannual meeting on Sunday at 1 p.m. is the Grandmasters OCA Zone play-downs being hosted on Monday. Most weekends are already booked in the new year with club bonspiels and rentals so any organization/company thinking of holding a curling day; do not wait too long, and call Don Currier at 613-876-6502.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17 All told the Raiders coach was pleased to not only see so many pucks go in the net, but that so many names filled up the scoresheet. “They were missing some good players,” Hartwick said of the Islanders. “But at the same time I thought our guys had a lot of jump and we had guys supporting the puck and moving their feet and showing their skill.”
Cam Parr picked up the shutout on Tuesday, turning away 24 shots. Travis Frankland took the loss. On Saturday the Raiders again had an offensive explosion in the third period, scoring three times to break a tie and earn a 6-3 road victory against the Campbellford Rebels. Riley Steeves scored the go ahead goal less than a minute after the Rebels’ Tristan Nugent has tied the game.
Austin Boulard iced two empty net goals to seal the win. Will Peirson and Hinds scored the first two goals of the game. McFarland scored at the 4:25 mark of the second, giving Napanee a 3-1 lead at the time. Tomo Mikuljan earned the win with 24 saves. Napanee is now on a three-game win streak and remains unbeaten in their last six. At 15-5-3 they hold a one-point lead over the 163 Port Hope Panthers, but have played four more
games. Amherstview (11-73) is third with 25 points with the Islanders (9-10-3) holding down the final playoff spot with 21 points. Campbellford (4-15-1) and Picton (2-17) are quickly falling out of the picture. Napanee has a chance to make a bit of headway in the standings this month as Tuesday’s game marked the first of four straight home games. Their next game is Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. against the Panthers.

COMMUNITY / 27
Morningstar Mission’s Christmas Day dinner relies on local generosity Christmas Day should be a day that feels like no other. It should be a day surrounded by loved ones. Morningstar Mission started a Christmas Day tradition many years ago, and it is wonderful to see how it has grown. Volunteers are drawn to it for a variety of reasons. Some are Food For tired of the commercialism of Christmas. Some are interested in reconnecting with the Jesus Christ part of Christmas. Some see it as an opportunity to spend time with family members, while giving back to the community (I have cherished memories of washing dishes with my own late father at the Mission on Christmas morning). And some, much like many of our clients, are tired of being alone at Christmastime. Like everything that happens at the Morningstar Mission, nothing would be possible without the generosity of time, effort and financial support from the community. For our community’s most vulnerable individuals, our Christmas dinner may provide the only meal, or social interaction, they may enjoy over the holidays. At the mission, we serve about 200 meals on Christ-
mas Day. Fifty to 60 meals go to those who come directly to the mission to enjoy a meal together. One hundred to 120 meals get delivered to anyone who is working on Christmas day as an essential service worker, for example, fire fighters, paramedics, police officers, and nursing h o m e t a f f . Thought sThere are another 20-30 meals that are delivered directly to ‘shut-ins’ — those who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to leave their homes, and who have called ahead for a meal to be delivered. If you are shut in, and would like to have a meal delivered to your home on Christmas Day, please call the mission. Many volunteers who deliver meals to seniors’ homes, offer to stay and visit with those who may not otherwise have any visitors on this day. It is, after all, a day like no other. The atmosphere at the Mission on Christmas Day is incredible. When you get a group of volunteers who are determined to put others first, everyone is affected by the overflowing cup of love. The most common refrain that day after a heartfelt “Merry Christmas,” is “Whatever you need…” It is amazing when you get a group of people together who
Kevin Alkenbrack
are there simply to put the needs of others ahead of their own. Please support our Christmas Day meal by making a donation of money or food. Other donations would also be appreciated, such as gloves, hats, and warm socks. Morningstar Mission provides free hot meals three times a week, a free income tax service for low-income individuals and emergency food boxes. If you would like to support us to reach the community’s most vulnerable individuals and
families, you can donate or volunteer by calling me at 613-354-6355. We are a registered charity and can provide tax receipts for donations of $10 or more. Morningstar receives no government funding; our funds come from directly from the individuals and community groups who believe in what we are doing. Kevin Alkenbrack is executive director of the Morningstar Mission and member of the Poverty Reduction Committee. R0 013211837
