Unions balk at Bill 115 manoeuvre Imposition of contracts could mean new round of teacher job actions By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER The cloud of uncertainty that is Bill 115 was still hanging over the Limestone District School Board as classes resumed after the holiday break. Ontario Minister of Education Laurel Broten followed through with an earlier promise, using the powers of Bill 115 to impose con-

tracts for all school boards and unions unable to reach an agreement by Dec. 31. The imposed contracts haven’t solved much in terms of the unrest among the teachers’ unions, as they’ve vowed to continue to withhold extracurricular activities and protest through other methods. Both public elementary and high schools were unable to reach a settlement before the deadline. “Naturally, (members of the

The sentiments were the same among elementary teachers. “That’s not the outcome that we wanted to see,” said Mike Lumb, president of the Limestone branch of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario. “This government has imposed a contract on us that we have had absolutely no say in whereas other unions have had a say.”

union) are very, very angry,” Elizabeth MacDonald, president of the Limestone branch of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation said of the imposed contracts. “They’ve had their collective bargaining rights taken away. They know the OSSTF tried repeatedly to negotiate honourable collective bargaining agreements… For the government to use such a heavy hammer is really unacceptable.”

Flu bug having lingering impact on region KFL&A Public Health warns that another influenza cycle could follow latest outbreak By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER A particularly nasty strain of influenza has been tormenting the Lennox and Addington area this winter, leading to an increase in reported cases. The bug has hit harder and earlier than last year, indicating that the region

may be in for a long flu season. Although the current outbreak is in Week 5 of a cycle that typically lasts six to eight weeks, the worst may not yet be over. Just as the first wave dies down, a second could hit the region in the coming months. “You can tell influenza by a sudden onset of fever, muscle aches and pains, headache, sore

throat and dry cough, said Dr. Ian Gemmill, Medical Officer of Health for Kingston, Frontenac, L&A Public Health. “People just take to their beds because they feel too bad. We’re aware of 100 confirmed cases. Those 100 reported cases, which is a jump from previous years, represent a small fraction of actual

cases because not everyone who contracts the virus will visit a doctor. According to Dr. Gemmill, in an ideal situation, people should have got their flu shots in November. That’s not to say there’s no point in getting one now, but it won’t be as effective. “It’s never too late to get the influenza vaccine for a

couple of reasons, said Dr. Gemmill. “For one, we’re not finished with the current outbreak, though we’re starting the descent in the epidemic curve. There’s still value (in getting the shot) if someone is exposed later on in this wave. The other reason why there’s value, using 2011-2012 as an example, after influenza A went through our community, we had some influenza B activity, which is a little unusual but it’s hard to predict when that’s going to happen. There are other strains of influenza which might arise later in the season. The arrival of influenza did cause local health care facilities to adapt. In the case of the John M. Parrott Centre, infection control measures managed to minimize illness among the home’s elderly residents. According to L&A Manager of Emergency Long Term Care and Services Brian Smith, only seven out of 168 Parrott Centre residents contracted the virus. All of those residents have recovered. Smith credited the effort of the home’s infection control manager Cathy Knapp in curbing the bug’s impact. What makes the flu so resilient is its ability to adapt and change. Once someone fights off a particular strain, they do develop

immunity to it. The reason why the flu is still active after all these years is that it can mutate enough so that it can become infectious to those who have contracted it before. “The vaccine only works for a year and a bit, said Dr. Gemmill, pointing to the virus’ ability to adapt. “Even when someone becomes fully immune to a strain, it changes so much that five years from now we’ll have a different strain circulating, no doubt. The protection from previous exposure is not necessarily going to be there. It may partially be there, or it might not be there at all. Along with getting the shot, Dr. Gemmill says the standard practices of avoiding contagious people and following strict handwashing routines can make the difference between contracting the virus or not. Even just touching a door knob that someone with the virus has come into contact with can spread the disease. As for those who do have it, Dr. Gemmill says it’s best to just stay home and avoid high traffic areas. Once the onset of the flu sets in, people are typically contagious for three or four days afterwards. As for getting the shot, there are plenty of options available. People can set it up through their family physician, visit certain pharmacies who carry the vaccine or make an appointment at KFLA Public Health. They can also visit the agency’s website, www.kflapublichealth.ca to see when its next clinic will take place.

2013-2014 COLOUR TRENDS

by Your Local Paint & Paper Experts

I absolutely fell head over heels for this colour palette the first time I viewed it. Not only do I adore the comforting colours chosen, the name brings an extra special feeling of acknowledgement for clients, friends and family. The title says it all. We believe you are the “Everyday Heroes”!

Ashley Foley-Staff

Everyday Hero favours a low-key, functional aesthetic. Highlighting designs and products that simply work well with no added fuss or embellishment, this theme embraces clean, crisp lines, order, lightness, honesty and simplicity. Everyday Heroes select eco-friendly materials; it opposes any design aesthetic that comes across as ostentatious. A mellow yet optimistic vibe is the foundation of the color palette. The hues are soft and desaturated, as if sun-faded or gently worn with time. Earthen, terracotta shades of red and brown warm the palette, while khaki, grey, and white serve as neutrals. Old script needs new ending AVING watched the Idle No More movement manifest itself over the past several weeks, we’re struck by how familiar it all seems. We also fear that it will all come to naught. That’s because we’ve seen this play out before. There are protests and demonstrations (and this time even a hunger strike) conducted by First Nations; there are protestations from the federal government that it is doing what it can to help First Nations communities. After a few weeks of back-and-forth and finger pointing, followed by promises to ‘make things right’, the issue falls to the back pages once again, and the tragedies unfolding in native communities across the country will continue. Indeed, these kinds of tragedies shouldn’t be permitted to happen in a country as wealthy and as prosperous as Canada. We’re not sure how much more evidence is needed to determine that whatever we’re doing — and by ‘we’, we mean natives and non-

H

natives, grassroots and government — is not working. The protests, at best, cause inconvenience and, at worst, fuel further intransigence. Blockades appear to be extremely effective at generating lawsuits and court proceedings. Improvements to native living conditions? Not so much. That said, more peaceful approaches haven’t been much (any?) more successful — if they had been, these protests wouldn’t be happening. Poverty, substance abuse and hopelessness are epidemic in many First Nations communities. Frustration at the grassroots level is understandable. Folks there have been asked to be patient for far too long — and their patience has been rewarded by continued suffering. It’s abundantly clear that fundamental change needs to happen, and not in some nebulous period ‘sometime in the future’. We need to take a look at the reasons why aboriginal communities are struggling and thoughtfully develop a means by which to improve. In other

words, throwing more money at the problem or adopting some draconian ‘tough love’ approach — both of which have been suggested from some quarters — aren’t going to be at the top of the ‘to do’ list. Such an approach will demand leadership from both the federal government and aboriginal leaders — a co-operative approach built on mutual respect and a commitment to achieve real improvement. When Stephen Harper meets with First Nations leaders tomorrow, ideally that will be the starting point from which this kind of arrangement can emerge. While such change won’t happen overnight, ‘someday’ just isn’t good enough. Any strategy moving forward must have identifiable goals and deadlines to go along with them. Anything less will mean more governmental inaction, more protests, more blockades and, most importantly, more suffering. That’s why anything less is unacceptable, to natives and nonnatives alike.

As a longstanding opponent of the Richmond Landfill, now rebranded the ‘Beechwood Road Environmental Centre’, I was not surprised when the MOE announced that they had concluded that the dump was leaking and that they had ordered Waste Management to take remedial action. The MOE had first declared their concerns more than two years ago and had asked the company to do more detailed investigations across the road from the dump. It took Waste Management two full years to report. Their conclusion was that the contamination was coming from the long-closed Lewis Meats and not coming from their dump. Their report made no proposals to address the problem or to notify the public that there was a risk that toxic leachate may be reaching the aquifers that supply the many houses and farms downstream from the dump. When the MOE indicated their disagreement with Waste Management’s conclusions their response has been to again deny the risks. While they now acknowledge the difficulty in monitoring leaks in the fractured limestone site, they have reluctantly agreed to initiate contingency measures. These facts illustrate precisely why this community continues to oppose giving permission to Waste Management to bring garbage from elsewhere in Ontario to build a dump that is a four fold expansion of the Richmond Landfill. They also illustrate why the Concerned Citizens are taking the issue of adequate monitoring and managing the closed site to Ontario’s Environmental Review Tribunal. Seniors’ shovel theft stinks

Over the Christmas holidays my husband had taken quite ill and had to go to hospital by ambulance. We have received many acts of kindness and caring concern from our friends and neighbours, for which we are very grateful. There was one act by someone the evening of Dec. 27 which as not caring and was purely disrespectful and is also called theft. I could see by your footprints in the snow that you are a younger person. You had to walk 25 feet up our driveway and onto our front step to take our snow shovel. I kept the shovel just outside the front door to be accessible to clear the step and sidewalk in case we had to go to the hospital again. You not only stole from a sick senior but also from a Second World War veteran. I hope you did not take it and just throw it somewhere for the fun of it. If you have a conscience, why not use our shovel to help a senior, or a veteran that lives near you. Start the new year off right by doing a good deed for someone, and make up for what you did to us. Don’t let indoor pool dream sink in 2013 Year’s end is a time to reflect, and the beginning of a new year is a time to plan for positive change. Let me begin by stating that I have been participating on an Aquatics Committee led by Greater Napanee town staff and with others in the community representing the Rotary Club, pool users and local business leaders. The comments here are mine alone. 2012 was the first year in decades that Napanee and surrounding communities didn’t have local access to an indoor pool. And, sadly, it likely won’t be the last. 2012 was the first year in decades that children and adults in our communities didn’t have easy access to year-round swimming lessons, swim team training, swim and life guard training opportunities, recreational swims, therapeutic classes and a place to have a fun birthday party. 2012 was the first year in decades that youth in our community didn’t have year-round employment opportunities in something they'd

been training and working towards for, perhaps, years. 2012 was a year where, to the best of my knowledge, one grant application for pool funding was submitted by the town. It was to the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund and the town was recently advised they were not successful. 2012 was a year of significant organizational change for Napanee, and changes in leadership in the areas that affect, in particular, recreation programming in Napanee. And 2012 was a year that I went to aquafit, driving to other communities, only 15 times. That compares to the 103 classes I attended as a member at the Napanee Indoor Pool in 2011. My body is not happy about that! Thankfully, 2012 was also a year that Napanee’s Rotary Club continued to raise funds for Aquatics in Napanee. Thank-you to the Rotary Club for your dedication, and to all who have supported their fundraising efforts. And, thankfully, we have a committee of vol-

unteers and town staff who are trying to keep the notion of an indoor pool in Napanee a reality. But here’s the thing: it needs to be more than just a notion. We’ve all been pretty quiet since the last splash in the pool on Dec. 30, 2011. You can help. Please write to your federal and provincial representatives to let them know how important an indoor pool in Napanee is and that this community needs their support. And write to your municipal representatives to let them know this is still an issue for the front burner. Please attend the New Year’s invitations you’re receiving from your representatives and take that opportunity to talk to them about what benefits an indoor pool will mean to you and your family. Let’s make some waves… in an indoor pool in Napanee. Deb Lowry, Napanee

About chocolates, snow and winter Every year around Christmas, a neighbour leaves a box of chocolates in our mailbox. These are not your tasteless discount store chocolates, but rather, high end, melt-in-your-mouth, hand-meanother-one brand of chocolates. The kind that causes you to let out a satisfied sigh as the eyes roll back in your head. I am guessing it is in appreciation for keeping their mailbox in front of our house clear of snow and for maintaining the site. Or, it could simply be for no other reason except to be neighbourly in the spirit of the Christmas season. Whatever the reason, it is by far one of the best gifts I receive each year, and I look forward to its arrival every winter as I begin the task of clearing snow. One must understand my affinity for chocolate; hence, why staff and I at the Campbellford chocolate outlet are on a first name basis. Snow clearing with my garden tractor and snow blower takes about two hours. There are the mailboxes, the long driveway, the large bird feeding area, and a spacious area for the dog to do her….well, you know. Snowblowing for me is like mowing grass. I enjoy the ceremony of it and some of my most profound thoughts come to me when grass is flying in the summer, and the blowing snow surrounds me in a dense fog. Many a column has been created from the tractor seat. This one, for example.

The 25 to 30 cm of snow on Dec. 27 was a bit troubling to me as I knew I would once again start hearing the moans and groans from the hate-winter faction. We gave up our satellite dish last year in favour of reading and hiking so, fortunately, I missed the usual person on the street news videos from people droning on endlessly with their views about winter. This is not suggesting that we should all cheer winter on, but I do submit that we make the best of what it has to offer. If you don’t routinely head south in the winter to escape your least favourite season, really, what other option do you have but to grin and bear it? After all, it was our decision to live here! We are so fortunate to be living in an area where we can enjoy the four seasons. If there is a disturbing feature about winter at all, it has to be the sea of salt and slurry that our roads become to appease the motoring public who feel they need to drive as fast in winter as they do in summer. For those of us who embrace or, perhaps, simply just make the best of winter, it is necessary to get far away from dirty roads, sidewalks and noisy city streets to where winter can be enjoyed in its purest form. I did just that, on the day of that first snowfall, on snowshoes. I have several pairs, and for this adventure, I chose the traditional Huron style snow-

Terry Sprague

Outdoor Rambles shoe. Even they sank deeply into the fluffy ground covering. A few more times around the fields, and I had a trail. While winter is often regarded as a dark and dismal time of the year, it was different on my trek over the fields. The bright sun dusted the snow surface with fine platelets of crystal which transformed into sparkling pinpoints of sapphire, amethyst and topaz. There was little wind to spoil the scene and tufts of snow still clung to the branches, and the stooped over grasses marking the edge of my trail had not yet started to create their arched images in the snow. I was alone, until the tracks of a mouse appeared and melted into the trail side grasses. Likely a deer

mouse, as voles, wisely, stay below the snow in winter. The deer I used to see daily had left; so had the coyotes who used to watch me from the next field. Deep snow necessitated new strategies and new locations to hunt. Only the barred owl that has been around since fall was spotted, perched atop an ash sapling, waiting for any sign of movement. There is a peacefulness and purity about winter after a fresh snowfall. It is an experience that cannot be appreciated from the seat of a snowmobile. I enjoyed many hours of snowmobiling in my youth and I know of its appeal. We had a trail on our farm, and I routinely guided parties of snowmobilers across the Bay of Quinte. The thrill of the ride and the fresh air were both exhilarating and I do miss it somewhat. And there was a subtle link with nature, albeit superficial, as we followed trails through woods and across wet-

lands. However, that special bond with the natural world did not come until I experienced winter on snowshoes or cross country skis. The wind through the undressed trees, the distant sound of a great horned owl, even a dog barking, and the whir of wings from a passing flock of snow buntings. I could hear these sounds now, and it completed the scene. With the right clothes and the right gear, winter is an exhilarating season with opportunities to explore nature in its finest moment and capture those moments digitally or just in memory. Winter has colour and beauty; we only have to seek it out before that first tulip blooms in the spring. For more information on today’s topic, please e-mail tsprague@kos.net or phone 613476-5072. A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 65 Years Ago January 14, 1948 n Winter was failing to put a dent in the Glenora ferry’s ability to make the crossing from Adolphustown to Prince Edward County. Thanks to milder-than-usual temperatures, the ferry’s channel was staying free of ice, allowing it to set a new wintertime operational record. Although it appeared as though the ice was thick along the sides of the water passage, the vessel was able to break any of the weak ice before a barrier could set. n At its first meeting of 1948, top officials with the Napanee Board of Educations indicated that prospects looked good for the building of a new school to be constructed in Napanee’s West Ward. The school board had just completed the construction of a new school to service the town’s east end. The school board had already gathered estimates on the projected cost of the new school. The general contract for the building would be just under $215,000; the electrical component would cost almost $17,500, while the plumbing estimate came in at around $50,000.

25 Years Ago December 28, 1988 n As he entered the final year of his term as mayor of Napanee, Harold Webster admitted that he was looking forward to retirement and pursuing other interests. Webster said that he was happy with the direction in which the town was headed, particularly in its increasing co-operation with surrounding municipalities. He pointed to the pending merger of the Napanee, Richmond and North Fredericksburgh fire departments, and said that it would be “a great benefit to the community.” n Local nursing and seniors homes were bouncing back from a devastating virus that hit their facilities. Some 101 of Lenadco’s 160 residents came down with the bug, while 25 staffmembers had to call in sick between Dec. 31 and Jan. 6. Just less than half of the residents at the Village Green home in Selby were affected by the same virus. Luckily, only three Lenadco residents and one Village Green resident required hospitalization.

Heritage committee reinforces town’s latest Official Plan Beginning a new year causes us to reflect on the past and what better place to begin this column than with the Official Plan for the Town of Greater Napanee that concerns our common legacy. Section 5.6 states, in p a r t : ‘Greater Napanee has a long heritage dating back to the U n i t e d Empire Loyalists. The recognition of historical elements is important as they are representative of the Town’s heritage and historical activities and events’... and ‘Their identification and study should be contemplated before development threatens their integrity. It is the intention of this Plan to establish a strategy that will guide the management of the Town’s heritage features and will preserve that heritage where feasible.’ What may surprise many residents is that Town Hall of Greater Napanee and the former Adolphustown Township Hall are the only two local buildings registered under National Historic Sites of Canada. They are also designated historic by the Ontario Heritage Act . Another obvious gem under the OHA is the Lennox and Addington Court House site, owned by the county. Others like

the CN Rail Station in Napanee, owned by the town, and Allison House on the Adolphustown Parkway, owned by the Bay of Quinte Branch of the UEL Association of Canada, are registered and protected with an Ontario Heritage Foundation easement. As well, within the town limits, 19 properties are listed but only five have been designated significant enough at this point to erect plaques to their history through the recommendation and hard work of Heritage and Streets Smart Committee, ably chaired by Councillor Marg Isbester. They include the Blewett Building or Old Public Utilities; the Harshaw Block which includes the New York Café; the Law Offices of Herrington, Warner & Grange; the Old Post Office; and the Royal Bank/Richelieu Hotel Block. Local Architectural Conservation advisory Committees were established in Ontario law in 1974, and have since evolved into heritage committees similar to the one set out by a previous council under By-law 55 in 2003. Designating a property protects it from demolition or changes to its exterior, but owners must be agreeable to its designa-

BILL 115 FROM PAGE 1 The imposed contracts mimic those signed by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association last year which, among other things, freezes wages for most teachers, reduces sick days and limits the amount of unclaimed sick days a teacher can cash out upon retirement. “Our teachers remain among the best paid in Canada and their benefits remain generous,” Broten said in a press release last week. “Teaching continues to be a rewarding career for thousands of dedicated professionals, and we will continue to invest in young teachers and reward their academic achievements and experience. By working together, we can continue to ensure Ontario schools are among the best in the world.” In that same press release, Broten stated that the use of the bill will result in $250 millions in savings in 2012-13, which grows to $540 million in 2013-14. By eliminating banked sick days, the government

In some cases, interior fixtures have also been designated. That is why the current HSS Committee is in Phase 2 of researching, listing and designating other notable properties. In addition, these volunteers are encouraging the establishment of a historic district as set out in ‘5. 5. 3 - Heritage Conservation District’ in the Official Plan. In addition to the HSSC, Greater Napanee council can draw on the resources and expertise of Jane Foster, Museum and Archives Manager of the L&A County Museum and her staff; Robert Hammond and his volunteers of the L&A Historical Society and other former township societies; Karen Price, Curator and volunteers of the Allan Macpherson House; and Brian Tackaberry, President of the Quinte Branch of the UEL Association, among others. The town is fortunate to have so many dedicated

expects a one-time savings of $1.1 billion. Directly after using the bill to impose the contracts, Broten announced the government would repeal it. That’s a move many teachers view, as a slap in the face, the union reps said. “It’s so disingenuous,” said MacDonald. "Broten said the only purpose of the legislation was a onetime-use legislation. She used it and now she’s going to repeal it. That’s like saying, ‘I’m going to hit you on the head with this stick, but don’t worry about it. I’m going to put the stick away. Not only that, it was a stick that I just brought in with the full purpose of hitting you in the head.’” Now no longer in a legal position to strike, MacDonald says the union is currently discussing ways to continue to voice its displeasure. Unions across the province held a meeting yesterday in Toronto to discuss a possible day of political action. The date and details of any political actions weren’t revealed by presstime. Until

professionals and volunteers working on behalf of preservation who provide seasoned advice on these matters. Subsection 5.6.1 of the Official Plan continues with, ‘Council recognizes that there is a possible link between heritage resources and economic development, particularly tourism’. This is indeed an understatement, for we all know that tourism dollars everywhere are chasing the unique, the beautiful and the historic. There are many ‘uptown’ developments found anywhere in North America today, but there is only one downtown Napanee and we are greater for it. they reach a solution they’re satisfied with, MacDonald doesn’t see extracurricular activities like after school sports returning in the “foreseeable future.” “All of our members are ready to continue the fight,” said MacDonald. “Obviously the government has become even more aggressive than ever before. I think that the public is starting to become aware that it’s not just about educational workers. It’s certainly not just about teachers. It’s about everyone that works in a school board, whether they’re in a union or not.” Elementary teachers are taking the same approach. “Our members are still taking a pause on the extracurricular stuff that is voluntary because they’re angry,” said Lumb. “This move to impose a contract and then turn around and repeal the bill was really not good.” All new contracts are retroactive to last Sept. 1 and will expire Aug. 31, 2014. The unions have said they’re prepared to bring their case to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Newburgh gets ready for 20th Canal Bash By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER STAFF WRITER EWBURGH’S annual Canal Bash will step out of its teens and into adulthood on Jan. 19, celebrating its 20th year of existence. The village will be bustling with winter activities all day long, starting with an 8 a.m. pancake breakfast hosted by Newburgh Minor Softball at the Community Hall. They’ll be accepting donations in exchange for pancakes, sausages, coffee and juice. Free pond skating and hockey on the canal starts at noon, along with the annual chilifest, which includes allyou-can-eat chili for $5 an adult, $2.50 a child. Crowd favourite ‘Canal Tails’ will also be sold at the pumphouse across from the hall. The best chili will be judged at 4 p.m. The Rogues’ Hollow

N

Renewal Committee and L&A Special Olympics will host events at the hall all afternoon coinciding with a bake sale and fun with crafts. Musicians will provide entertainment at the hall as well. Horse drawn wagons will offer free rides from 3-7 p.m. at the fire hall parking lot. Newburgh residents will have a chance to bid their Christmas trees farewell in style, with a huge tree bonfire starting at 4:30 p.m. in the park beside the canal. “We really feel like we’ve kind of found the right formula,” said Rick Doyle, who founded the event and maintains the skating rink. “We’ve been really happy for how things have worked for the last couple of years.” Though organizers have added different attractions here and there over the last two decades, it has generally resembled the same basic structure

since its first year. “You have no concept really that you’ve given birth to something that’s going to grow and mature like this,” said Doyle, who admits he never imagined the event would still be going strong in 2013. “Its almost like a child in a sense because every year it does change and matures a little. Other people have been involved in the life of it. We started off really just by shovelling a little spot on the canal to have a skating pond. Every year we just added something like burning the Christmas trees and getting the fire bigger and adding music.” As with any outdoor event, luck plays a huge role in its success. Last year’s mild winter created sub-par skating conditions, as it poured rain the night before the event. Early

indications point to a more ‘winter-like’ winter this year, which bodes well for those looking to take part in some cold weather fun. Leading up to the event, the canal on Factory Street is usually occupied with a handful of skaters or hockey players. “There’s a lot of hockey being played,” Doyle said of the canal, which he floods and shovels. “The ice conditions are good, but not everywhere.” He estimates that about 50 per cent of the surface is pristine and hopes the weather will continue to stay below zero from now until Jan. 19. Provided the weather does its part, Doyle expects more than 1,000 people to attend the event. As it has for the past three years, the night will finish off with a dazzling fireworks display at 7 p.m. “It’s really come to be a

Winter Chill Festival to take over Market Square By Ashley Foley BEAVER STAFF WRITER For the fifth consecutive year, the Town of Greater Napanee is hosting its annual Winter Chill Festival, jam-packed with even more entertainment. It’s geared to take place

in Market Square on Jan. 19, from noon to 3 p.m. This year a stilt character and a variety-act entertainer from Toronto will be on site, on top of activities offered last year. “This year for something new and exciting we’re bringing in some entertainers, said Lynd-

say Tee, co-ordinator of Winter Chill Festival for the town, organizing alongside with Andy and Sherry Pruchnicki. “The stilt character is going to be doing two onehour sets. They’re both going to be roaming the area, talking to people and having fun. In the variety act, this person does multiple different skills and entertainment-type things. Many of last year’s winter activities will be back again this year, including the annual chili challenge, snow ball hockey tournament, horse drawn wagon rides and ice skating. “Every year we host various activities and the fun activities will be back again this year. We will have our traditional chili cook-off where participants will be able to come in and taste the chili for $5 and they’ll be able to vote to help us crown the best chili in town, said Tee. Anyone is able to enter the chili challenge but must pre-register with the town and cook their chili in a kitchen approved by the health unit. Anyone looking to participate but unable to find a suitable kitchen can contact Tee. Beaver Tails will also be offered again this year from Ottawa after a very successful trial run last

Like last year, a ‘snow mountain’ will be piled up high for visitors to this year’s Winter Chill Festival in Napanee. year, explained Tee. The outdoor rink, which is made especially for the event, will also be up and running. “The public is encouraged to bring their snowsuits and ice skates to go for a free skate outside, or for marshmallow roasting with the Napanee Fire Services, said Tee.

Children will also have the opportunity to play on a snow mountain, build and paint snowmen and participate in winter crafts. Tee said face painting will be offered for a fee per child. Non-perishable food items will be collected again this year, and Tee

hopes the fundraiser will gain momentum each year. “It was definitely a success last year and we’re hoping this year to increase it even more. It usually takes a few years to catch on. Hopefully people bring a food donation when they come for the day of fun and we can support the Salvation Army.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL‌ Meeting of Napanee Group 150 will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 at Trinity United Church in Napanee, John Street entrance. All welcome.

Concert series returns to Tamworth Legion Big-name acts booked for early 2013 By Ashley Foley BEAVER STAFF WRITER

SPWC gets helpful boost from pet owners By Ashley Foley BEAVER STAFF WRITER The Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre received a $1,306 donation last week that will be put toward medication, food and day-today expenses. The cheque was presented to Sue Meech, director of the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre, by Sondra Elliott, owner of Pet Panache, and Kiley Hanna, dog groomer at Doggy Do’s. For the past year, Pet Panache and Doggy Do’s offered pet nail cutting from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. Elliott said people would line up to get their pet’s nails cut. A fee of $10 a session was charged, which was set aside for the donation. “That’s pretty amazing,” said Meech as she accepted the cheque last Friday. Elliott has been a supporter of the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre for many years and Meech said donations like this keep the organization running. “I’ve been able to buy food and medication for the animals that come in, that’s

always an ongoing expense,” she said, but added that everything from energy bills to building maintenance all contribute to the continuing financial pressures facing SPWC. Meech said some people give donations for certain projects, which is helpful, but said there are day-to-day expenses that also need to paid with donations such as the one she received from Pet Panache and Doggy Do’s last week. “A lot of people give money for things like building cages but we need money desperately for the day-to-day running of the organization. That’s where money like this comes in handy because Sondra (Elliott) doesn’t put any stipulations on it so we can use it where it’s needed. It might be drugs this month and it might be food next month.” Meech said they are grateful for all the support and donations from the community. “We’re very appreciative of the ongoing contributions. I can’t believe it’s that much money. It’s incredible. We really appreciate Sondra (Elliott) being here and she donates other stuff as well like dog food and cat food from time to time.”

After I finished high school, I worked at a variety of labouring type jobs and then I moved to the area. I didn’t know where to start in my search for a new job. Someone told me that Career Edge was quite helpful, so I decided to find out for myself. I met with Erin, a Career Counsellor who worked with me to discover that my true passion was in the construction field. With her help, I developed my resume and applied for a position at MKR Cabinets in Trenton. I was hired as a full-time Cabinet Maker and have been there for over a year now. I recently applied for the Cabinet Maker Apprentice program, again with the assistance of Career Edge. Thanks to Career Edge, I’m working in a field that I love.

Public to weigh in on town’s waterfront plan Residents invited to comment on development options at meeting set for next Wednesday

The Town of Deseronto is hosting an information night to discuss options for future waterfront development. The public meeting will be held on Jan. 16 at the Deseronto Community Lions Hall, from 4-6:30 p.m., to gain residents’

feedback before progressing with growth. The study was initiated by the Ontario Environment Assessment Act to explore expansion on the Bay of Quinte in Deseronto. “We’re not proposing anything specific at this point, that’s the purpose of this meeting is to start looking at the various options for development on

the waterfront,” said Dana Valentyne, economic development officer for the Town of Deseronto. Town staff and council will be present, as well as representatives from The Greer Galloway Group Inc., contractor for future Deseronto waterfront development. The town completed a feasibility study in 2011, which proposed recom-

mendations for water strategies, ranging from residential to commercial to recreational growth. Valentyne said the town held a public meeting in January 2012 during this stage but has not conducted any public consultation on the project since then. During the feasibility stage, Valentyne said there was a lot of interest in developing a marina. “Recreational development, specifically a marina, was one that was touched on to accommodate the boater market that’s basically bypassing Deseronto at this point, because we don’t have those amenities,” said Valentyne. “Other recreational options such as a skate park, a playground area, parks and trails, a waterfront trail that expands among the entire stretch of our waterfront so that we can provide more accessibility for pedestrians and visitors (were also suggested). So, we’re really looking at a mixture of options at this point and the purpose of this is to try and get some public input and feedback as to what people would like to see on the waterfront in Deseronto,” she continued. the MOE,” explained Valentyne. She said she expects the terms of reference and environmental assessment stages to last 18-24 months and does not expect construction to begin for about two years. After that Valentyne said much of the development will depend on funding. “It’s not something the municipality can likely finance on its own, we’ll be looking for government and possibly private partners down the road to fund the various developments we decide to move forward with.” The Town of Deseronto has already been fortunate in receiving grants to assist with the beginning stages of the waterfront developments. Deseronto received a 50 per cent grant from the Eastern Ontario Development Program, which accounted for $25,000, to put toward the terms of reference phase. Prior to that, Trenval Business Development Corporation, which owns the Eastern Ontario Development Program, supported the Town of Deseronto with a 50 per cent grant to cover part of the cost for the feasibility study. The Town has not applied for a grant for development costs yet.

may be one of the first opportunities the public has had to voice concerns or ideas with waterfront improvements in Deseronto, the idea is anything but new. Valentyne said council has had countless discussions on the topic over the past couple decades. “It’s been an ongoing discussion amongst council. Waterfront development has been one of our top priorities,” she said. “It’s been about a 15year process that we’ve been assessing waterfront options and sourcing various financial assistance and government programs out there. It’s been a long process, that’s for sure.” Town council formally approved the feasibility study for waterfront development in Deseronto back in October 2012. Council has also passed a resolution to move forward with the terms of reference, explained Valentyne. The terms of reference is the phase of development the town is currently working on, which must be approved by the Minister of Environment before any construction can begin. “This is the terms of reference preparation phase. To move forward with any type of water development in the future, an environmental assessment has to be completed and that’s mandated by

What renovations pay off?

20 / REAL ESTATE

If you’re thinking about selling your home, you may also be wondering if this is the time to fix that leaky faucet, paint the fence or even re-model the kitchen. “When it comes to preparing for a sale, it’s important to weigh the cost of any improvements,” says Ron Abraham, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association. According to Abraham, there are two key questions to consider before undertaking any repairs or renovations to your home: Will the improvements make your

T H E

home more desirable to buyers? And, will they increase the value of your home enough to justify the cost? “If you can answer ‘yes’ to both questions, the improvement is probably worth pursuing,” says Abraham. When it comes to re-modelling, focus on projects that will have the greatest impact on your home’s value. “Dollars spent refreshing kitchens and bathrooms for instance, can go a very long way

should be repaired. This includes leaky faucets, holes in window screens, lights that don’t work, etc. (For a full checklist, visit www.howrealtorshelp.ca) Get rid of clutter: Remove unused objects and furniture to optimize space. Clean everything: Making sure your home is spotless is the single most cost effective way to make your home more attractive to buyers. Pay extra attention to the kitchen and bathrooms. Repair as much as you can: Some repairs are absolutely vital, like a leaky roof or basement and unsafe electrical problems. Get the problem fixed and

in improving the resale value of your home,” says Abraham. “However, depending on the state of the rest of your house, these renovations may not actually help increase your home’s value. It’s important to consult with your Realtor prior to making any major investments. Sometimes all it takes is some general maintenance to get the most out of your home sale.” Abraham offers these cost-effective methods to ensure your home is at its most appealing come sale time: See your home through a buyer’s eyes: Create a checklist of all the “little things” that

repair and repaint any water damage. Depersonalize your home: Remove all objects that are too personal so that buyers can picture themselves living in the space. This includes family portraits, trophies, etc. Never underestimate the power of paint: Fresh neutral colours enhance room size and look inviting. Add some beautifying touches: Mirrors, plants and curtains help freshen up a home. Mind the outside: The condition of your home’s exterior is just as important as the interior. Keep

your grass groomed, flower beds tidy and walkways clean and free of any tripping hazards. You want the first impression of your home to be a lasting one. “Preparing your home for sale shouldn’t mean breaking the bank. Speak to your Realtor about how to best optimize your renovation and home repair dollars so that potential buyers can picture themselves living there.” More information is available at www.howrealtorshelp.ca.

Potent Pirates take down Napanee Raiders with ease Napanee outscored 13-2 in home-and-away losses to first-place club over past week By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER SPORTS The Napanee Raiders made stops on both sides of the Bay of Quinte's Skyway Bridge this week, sandwiching a win in Deseronto between two ugly losses to Picton. The latest came Tuesday at home, falling 6-2 to the Picton Pirates. “Our first 12 minutes we kept them fairly contained,” said Raiders head coach Scott Slack. “I know the shots (17-7 in favour of Picton in the first) was a little off, but most of their shots were from the outside. Picton’s a great hockey club. They’re in first place for a reason. They move the puck well and they skate well. We just tried to trap them and it worked for probably the

first 12 minutes of the first and then we kind of got away from it." Napanee's Jayden Adams struck first at the 5:50 mark, banking home a goal with help from Chris Doyle and Luke Emmons. The Raiders preserved the lead until the 9:30 mark, when the Pirates tied it up and never let up from there. Ryan Sizer knotted it up on the powerplay and Jacob Panetta gave them the lead for good at the 16:30 mark, also on the man advantage. "They have a great power-play," Slack said of Picton. "It's a team you have to stay out of the box against. You can't take any dumb penalties. You get a couple of cheap ones called against you, there's a good chance it's going to go in your net." Geoff Cleminson, Jere-

miah Doherty, Jack Davidson and Riley Main each reeled off a goal over the final two periods, completing a cycle of six unanswered by the visitors. Bud Norris gave the home crowd a minuscule reason to celebrate, scoring a break away goal with one second left on the clock. Mike Brogee took the loss, allowing all six goals. He was pulled with about eight minutes left in favour of Napanee Stars call up James Hanley, who turned away a couple of shots to close out the game. The 6-2 defeat was only a minor improvement over the 7-0 loss Napanee suffered last Thursday in Picton. Evan Greer counted for four of the goals while Sizer, Coleman Foisy and Jack Davidson each had one. Picton's special teams were at it again, tallying

Moore returns as Napanee’s golden girl Local star helps Canada win IIHF U18 Worlds in Finland By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER SPORTS lex Moore and her Team Canada teammates made the nation proud on Saturday, defeating the U.S. 2-1 in overtime of the International Ice Hockey Federation U18 Women’s World Championship gold medal game in Heinola, Finland. “It felt amazing,” said Moore, a native of Napanee. “Once we scored, we jumped on the ice and tackled everyone.” Karly Heffernan of St. Albert, Alta scored the game winner just 58 seconds into extra time. Playing just as big a role was Catherine Dubois of Quebec City, who sent the game into overtime by scoring with just 13 ticks left on the clock. “(The U.S.) scored in the first period and we were down the entire game,” said Moore. “We scored with 13 seconds left. Even though I wasn’t on the ice, just being there was exciting.” The gold medal compliments a bronze Moore won as a member of Team Ontario Red at the National Women’s U-18 Championship last November in Dawson’s Creek, BC. This time around Moore and her teammates weren’t willing

Alex Moore hoists the championship trophy following Team Canada’s title win. to settle for anything less than gold. “We just put that behind us and then we just set ourselves another goal to win gold and not follow in those footsteps that we did at Nationals,” said Moore. On their quest for gold the Canadian ladies defeated Hungary 4-1, Fin-

land 4-0, Germany 7-0 and Sweden 7-2 before meeting their American rivals. The two North American entries have now met in the past six finals of the tournament with each side winning gold three times. The tournament was Moore’s first experience representing Canada and first time her hockey

career had taken her out of the country. It was also her last year of eligibility for a U18 team, making her selection to the squad that much sweeter. She had dealt with the disappointment of just missing the cut several times before finally breaking camp this year. Each disappointment only motivated her to try that much harder for the next camp. She said the tournament was everything she had ever hoped and more, and is looking forward to doing it all over again with the next age bracket. Now back on Canadian soil, Moore will look to continue her strong season with the Whitby Wolves of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League. She hopes a strong showing will keep her on the radar of Team Canada coaches as they begin assembling their U22 national team. She’ll find out this summer if she makes the cut or not. Just entering the prime of her career, the Grade 12 St. Theresa’s student has aspirations of one day suiting up for Canada at the Olympic games. In the meantime, a U18 Women’s World Championship gold is her greatest accomplishment to date. “This is just the first step in my goal,” she added.

Deseronto’s Chris Rogalsky tries to coral a bouncing puck with Chris Doyle closing in on him.

Storm’s comeback attempt falls short Raiders win season series 6-2 By Adam Prudhomme BEAVER SPORTS he Deseronto Storm spent the majority of Friday’s home game against the Napanee Raiders playing catch up, ultimately failing to secure the critical goal in a 5-4 loss. Napanee amassed a 3-0 lead before the game was 13 minutes old courtesy

T

goals from Mitch Pearce, Donny Emmons and Bud Norris. Chris Doyle had an assist on each goal while Emmons and Jesse Lloyd had singles. Norris’ was the prettiest of the bunch, skating in alone, tucking the puck past Storm goalie Ben Elliot and into the side of the net. Just as the game seemed like the game out of reach, Nick Fergurson ignited the Storm’s comeback with a goal at the 17:35 mark.

STORM… Late rally not enough to catch Raiders, losing streak hits four

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 22

Brandon Turner and Brandon Torres assisted on the play. Jordan Cannons kept the momentum rolling with a quick strike in the first, converting a feed from Alex McConnell and Riley Muise at the 1:48 mark. The celebration was short lived though as Luke Emmons responded for Napanee less than a minute later. Joel Ferland scored the eventual game winner midway through the frame. Down three goals for the second time in the game, the Storm once again showed some resiliency. Muise cut the

lead to two and Brandon Turner scored five minutes into the third, setting up a nervous finish for both teams. Both goalies stole the show over the final 15 minutes, with Kyle Copeland preserving the slim lead while Elliot gave the Storm every opportunity to at least tie it. Deseronto came painstakingly close to knotting it up when Muise's slap shot rang off the post and kicked out of harm’s way. With Elliot pulled in favour of an extra attacker for the final minute the Storm were unable to set up any ample scoring chances. When the buzzer sounded the Storm were

saddled with their fourth straight loss. Elliot finished the night with 62 saves while Copeland made 33. This game marked the final meeting of the season between the Storm and Raiders with Napanee finishing on top, six wins to two losses. Though there were a few lopsided games, most of the series was tightly contested. In a year where both teams have struggled, they could always count on a boisterous crowd when they met their geographical rivals. Overall the Storm sit 328 on the year, officially eliminated from the playoff race. With just nine games left on the season they could still mathematically

Postseason looming, Stars look to improve playoff seeds

BEAVER STAFF apanee District Minor Hockey has underlined Jan. 19 on its calendar as an important date, the probable start of Lakeshore Provincial Playoffs, much like it is for the NHL, Winter Chill Festival, and the Newburg Canal Bash. For many divisions, match-ups are based on league standings in a 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, and 4 vs. 5 format. n The Napanee Giant Tiger Bantams defeated Oshawa on the road 3-1 last Wednesday, to briefly maintain their place in a tight race. Then, they continued the pressure with a 4-4 tie of league-leading Quinte West Hawks, a team with only one loss all season. In Cobourg Sunday night, the boys battled a team they squeaked by 2-1 back in September. Unfortunately, they were shut out 2-0 to end league play in sixth spot. With a 2.0 goals against average and a league leading eight ties, they look forward to the playoff round. n The Napanee Country Traditions Novice A Stars travelled to Ajax for two games this past weekend. On Saturday, the Stars won 6-2. Scoring goals were Ethan Martin with two, while Cal Uens, Owen Gibson, Ty Kemp and Ben Albright each had one. Assists in this game went to Ben Albright and Owen Gibson. On Sunday, the

N

Stars battled Ajax with only nine skaters, winning 6-0. Quinton Pierce and Reid Lambert chipped in two a piece, while Ben Albright and Cal Uens helped out with one each. Lambert, Gibson, Slaven and Uens also had assists. In both games, Ryan Aldridge and Corbin Votary shared the goaltending duties and earned their tenth shutout of the season. Their record improved to 21-0 in league play, with six games remaining. n The Novice AE Stars played Port Hope on Saturday and suffered a disappointing 5-3 loss. Goal scorers were Spencer Cranley with two and Gavin Brooks with one. Sunday proved much more successful for the team as they hosted the Junior Belleville Bulls in their home arena and earned a narrow 2-1 win. Cranley scored both goals with assists from Ben Buxton (two), Brooks and Will Myers. Nathaniel Cinnamon and Jacob Brown shared the net duties. n The Napanee Boyd Electric Peewees tied Quinte West last Wednesday 1-1. Nelson Powers scored for the Stars often dominated by the locals. The following night, in Kingston, they outshot their opponents 1815, but the scoreboard told a different story, 3-0 for Kingston. On Saturday, they needed at least a tie to lock up a playoff position in their last league game, in Oshawa. Alex Brady and Nelson Powers scored in a

2-0 shutout that knocked their hosts out of contention. The defense corps, including net-minder Finn Pierce, stood strong, allowing only four goals over the three games, and sported a 2.1 goals-against average in league play. n The Napanee Juveniles took the long trek to Sarnia for the Silver Stick Tournament, only to face their nemesis, this area’s Quinte West team, in their Thursday evening game. The Stars fell 5-0. In the Friday afternoon game, facing New Hamburg, the locals came away with a 5-3 win. Saturday morning they faced Woolwich and were shut out 2-0. This put them tied with the records of Woolwich and New Hamburg, but the tiebreakers allowed the other two teams to advance, and sent our local Juveniles home. Playdowns will see them face Quinte West. n The McDougall Insurance Minor Peewees finished at the top of the standings in the Lakeshore League. Last Thursday, in Cobourg, they were victorious 4-1. They played a weekend home-and-home with Quinte West winning 9-1 and 6-0. Preparing for the Silver Stick Finals in Newmarket next weekend and the playoffs to follow, they take pride in allowing only 28 goals in 24 games,

while scoring 144. It is a testament to the group of defensemen and goalies, as well as excellent backchecking forwards. n The Napanee Minor Atom Stars’ Connor Brooks tallied once in a 3-1 loss to Cobourg, with assists to Dylan Bailey and Josh Reid. They fared better in Whitby, winning over the White squad 5-2 on Sunday. n The Napanee Peewee AE Stars were the guests of the Napanee Raiders at the Raider’s home against the Picton Pirates on Tuesday night. The team got an opportunity to meet the Raiders before they took to the ice against the Pirates. The team is grateful to the Raiders for the invitation. The Peewee AEs can identify with the Raiders’ recent struggles, as the Stars try to emerge from struggles of their own. Their latest opportunity to get back in the win column came and went in Peterborough on Saturday night, falling 7-1 to the Petes. Colby Sweet redirected a shot from Braiden Brant for Napanee’s only goal. The Peewee AEs host Belleville tonight at 6:30 pm. They close out the season in Peterborough on Sunday. n The Exit Realty Minor Midget Stars finished the regular season over the weekend with games Fri-

shots. Michael Samson tallied first for the Stars on an assist from Parker Watson and tied the second period at one each. After the break, there was no looking back – Josh Durnan scored a well-earned goal on assists from Dowdle and Benn. Brody Ford took a pass from Bertrand and scored the empty-netter, sealing the deal at 3-1. Again, Igy was stellar in net and made several ‘TSN Highlight’ saves. n The Napanee Midget A’s were defeated 5-3 in Ajax, and will host a return visit Friday at 9:30 p.m. Come out to see some exciting action at the SPC.

Chase Dowdle scored on an assist from Josh Benn, Riley West unassisted and Michel Samson from Colsen Bertrand. Kingston tallied two in the third and took the win 5-3. RAIDERS… 10 games left

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Napanee received a bit of a breather on Friday night, edging the last place Deseronto Storm 5-4. Napanee jumped to a 30 lead courtesy Mitch Pearce, Donny Emmons and Norris, but then had to sweat out a nervous third. Deseronto’s Brandon Turner tallied early in the third to cut it to 5-4 and the Storm never relented in a desperate attempt to tie it. Copeland slammed the door and made the lead stand, finishing the night with 33 saves. With the two losses and one win, Napanee now sits 9-20-1 on the year with 19 points. They sit firmly entrenched in fifth place, trailing the Campbellford Rebels by 17 points and leading the sixth place Storm by 13. The Jets are third with 37 points, Port Hope Panthers second with 39 and the Pirates have all but sewn up first with 50. Picton boasts a 24-4-0-2 record on the year and look to be in playoff form already. All signs point to them going on a deep run come Febru-

ary and possibly into March. Napanee on the other hand has no hope of a playoff appearance and has just 10 games left on the year. “Compete for 60 minutes,” Slack said of what he'd like to see for the final quarter of the schedule. “If they compete for 60 minutes, they’re going to see a big difference in the score board and win column. This team is talented enough. This team can be solid.” Napanee will head to Campbellford on Saturday and then host those same Rebels on Tuesday. Opening puck drop is 7:30 p.m. for both games. On Jan. 26 the team will host An Evening with the Raiders, featuring a singing performance by Andrew Martin. Fans will have a chance to mingle with players, have dinner and take part in a silent auction. Tickets are $70 at the Strathcona Paper Centre's front desk and help support the team. For recording four assists in his last two games, Chris Doyle is the Ontario Milk Marketing Board Raider of the week.

LAJOIE, Cecile January 2, 2012 A year ago you left this world To enter the pearly gates, Though I still don’t understand why, I guess it was your fate To be carried off to the Heavens Tucked in an angel’s wings, Free from all the hurt and pain This cruel world can bring, Although a year has come and gone, Our emptiness remains, I hope as time goes on, Our hearts can sing again, Thank you for your loving ways, The crazy tales you told, You’ll always be in our hearts forever, For yours was made of gold. Poem written by Alisha Thibault. Sadly missed and loved, your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. Until we meet again.

In loving memory of Susan Wagner

incredible daughter, sister and aunt April 9, 1959 - January 14, 2012

We thought of you today, But that is nothing new, We thought of you yesterday, And will tomorrow, too. We think of you in silence And make no outward show, For what it meant to lose you Only those who love you know. Remembering you is easy We do it every day, It’s the heartache of losing you Which will ever go away. They say memories are golden Well maybe that is true, We never wanted memories We only wanted you. A million times we’ve needed you, A million times we’ve cried, If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a special place No one else could ever fill. No tears you would have wanted For us all to have moved on, In our hearts and memories forever, Never forgotten, never gone. Always remembered and missed. Love you always, Mom, Linda, David, Laurie and Families

In loving memory of My Dear Wife and Our Wonderful Mother Susan Wagner

April 9, 1959 - January 14, 2012

We think about you all the time And every day it hurts to cry, So much has happened in our lives, We’re not sure how hard to try. Tears are falling constantly, Our hearts hurt every day, We think about your beautiful smile, That we pray we see again someday. The sweet smell of your perfume, Has slowly faded away, But all your helpful teachings Are always here to stay. We can’t express how much you taught us, So much we can’t explain, All the times we can remember, Never once heard you complain. So many hearts were broken, The day God called you Home, It seems as though each one of us, Were left to survive alone. We know there was a reason, That you had to leave, To keep us in your watchful eyes, So now in God we really do believe. Love you always, Don, Marcia, Chris, Aidan, Sarah, Cindy, Ryan, Shayla and Lauryn

LIBRA (Sept 23/Oct 23) Surround yourself with lots of friends when you cannot have family near, Libra. This will help keep feelings of loneliness from creeping in during quiet moments. SCORPIO (Oct 24/Nov 22) Scorpio, you may need to concede to a difference of opinion this week when you simply cannot resolve something amicably. Redirect attention on a craft or pastime. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23/Dec 21) Sagittarius, sometimes you tend to be brutally honest with others. While honesty is an admirable trait, this week you may need to censor what you say to avoid hurt feelings. CAPRICORN (Dec 22/Jan 20) Taking a circuitous route will land you at the finish a little behind others, Capricorn. But you will get to the end nevertheless. Trust your instincts with this one. AQUARIUS (Jan 21/Feb 18) Aquarius, you probably won’t be able to rest your mind until you square away all of your finances and make a budget for the new year. Take on the job this week. PISCES (Feb 19/Mar 20) Introspection leads you on a mini-quest to find a creative outlet, Pisces. Play to your strengths and some ideas will surface.

ARIES (Mar 21/Apr 20) Aries, you may have to work a little harder to get what you want, but the results will be worth it. Focus your attention on making a name for yourself in the business sector. TAURUS (Apr 21/May 21) There is no stopping you when you have a goal in mind, Taurus. Although you may be ambitious, just be mindful of other people in your path as you go. GEMINI (May 22/Jun 21) Be honest with your feelings this week, Gemini. Someone close to you is interested in learning more about the way you operate. This could strengthen a friendship. CANCER (Jun 22/Jul 22) Don’t bite off more than you can chew, Cancer. Otherwise you could be left with a long to-do list and not enough energy to get the job done. Consider paring down tasks. LEO (Jul 23/Aug 23) Leo, although you may have rest and recreation on the brain, celestial forces are pushing you in the opposite direction. Busy days are ahead, so rest later. VIRGO (Aug 24/Sept 22) You have put too much effort into something to abandon your plans now, Virgo. Rethink quitting early on. Maybe a friend can carry you over the finish line.

‘Friends Club’ revived with transportation plan

Dump the Plump weigh-in extended By Ashley Foley BEAVER STAFF WRITER

By Seth DuChene EDITOR

Hospice L&A is responsible for fundraising (or receiving donations for) the other half. Dump the Plump is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers, alongside its annual curling fun-spiel on Feb. 9 and golf tournament on June 8. Funds from Dump the Plump will go toward training volunteers for their home visiting program, explained Ayling. “At Hospice, we offer a home visiting volunteer program, so volunteers go into the home and provide family and caregiver relief. They basically provide support to those living at home with a life-threatening illness or sometimes we do hospital visits as well if they need someone to go sit with them in the evening because family lives far away or something like that, she said, among other programs. Those interested in participating in this year’s Dump the Plump challenge can sign up at the Hospice L&A office at a cost of $25 per person or $100 for a team. Weigh-in days are the second Wednesday of each month.

Hospice Lennox and Addington is hosting its 17th annual Dump the Plump contest and, with an extended registration date, hopes to beat last year’s participation record. Those weighing in for the cause, and to shed a few pounds, stepped on the scales on Jan. 7. The deadline to register has been extended to Jan. 16 and the last weigh-in day is set for June 3. Last year, 107 individuals as well as nine teams of four participated; together, they raised more than $1,787.50 for Hospice Lennox and Addington, with an equal amount divided among the top individual and team winners. “Half the money goes to support hospice services in our community and the other half goes to the winners, said Kim Ayling, fundraiser/office administrator for Hospice Lennox and Addington. Ayling said Hospice L&A is only 50per-cent funded by the Local Health Integration Network, which means

The Napanee Salvation Army’s Family Services department is hoping to revive a once popular afterschool program. The ‘Friends Club’ for children between the ages of five to 12, which takes place at the Salvation Army Church at 82 Richard St., originally started in fall 2009, says Salvation Army Family Services Co-ordinator Dana Henry. At its height, it regularly attracted 20-25 students. This year, however, numbers have dwindled significantly. “It filtered right off, said Henry adding that she suspects that the opening of Southview Public School and subsequent transportation issues were to blame. “I’m assuming because

of the new school, kids weren’t able to get to the new program on time. She says she hopes a few changes to the program might remedy that decline. Thanks to a partnership with Martin’s Bus Service, transportation will now be provided for children living in the Meadow Lane and Church Street areas. Pickup at Church Street will be at 4:20 p.m. and at Meadow Lane will be at 4:25 p.m. The Wednesday-night program runs from 4:30-6 p.m. Henry said that at each session, children can have fun and play games, listen to a Bible story and have a meal, all free of charge. Participating children must register in order to get a better sense of participation numbers. Those looking to register their children or to assist as a volunteer should contact Henry at 613-354-7633. • Interior Design • Home Staging • Window Treatments • Organization • Painting • Colour Consultations
