Smoke detectors saved lived: GNFS Camden Road residents alerted to fire in time BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Working smoke alarms were credited with saving two lives in a fire on Camden Road in Napanee last Wednesday. Greater Napanee Fire Services arrived on the scene just before 9 p.m., extinguishing what was left of the fire that caused minor burn injuries to two occupants and about $10,000 worth of damage. Both victims were released from Lennox and Addington County General Hospital later that same night. “The occupant was alerted initially because of the smoke alarm,” said Kevin Duncan, a fire prevention office with GNFS. “The occupants on the other side (of the apartment) were alerted because of the smoke alarm as well.” The fire originated in the kitchen. The resident was able to contain most of the outbreak before the first emergency crew

arrived. “The person on the one side where the fire originated was distracted and the smoke alarm alerted him to the oil on fire on the stove,” said Duncan. “It got into the cupboard and the ceiling a little bit. It’s one of those situations where maybe another minute and it could have been a lot worse. “It was a good thing they had working smoke alarms,” added Duncan. “We were in there about a year ago and made sure they had working smoke alarms. Sometimes education pays off.” Unfortunately, Duncan notes, all too often they’re finding residents don’t have a working smoke alarm. By law all residencies are required to have a working smoke alarm on all levels of the home. “I would love to say out of 100 houses we have maybe 98 per cent compliance, but it’s just not the case,” said Duncan. “I spent a lot of time doling out tickets and in court. I wish I

didn’t have to do that.” Case-in-point was another fire GNFS dealt with last Friday. Though there were no serious injuries, further investigation revealed several nonworking smoke alarms throughout the residence. “There’s a 50/50 shot right there,” said Duncan, referring to Wednesday’s and Friday’s calls. “Two fires, one’s good (with smoke alarms), the other’s terrible. That’s what we’re finding more often than not.” As frustrating as it can be at time, Duncan says GNFS will continue to urge all residents to make sure their smoke alarms are in working order. “There were 77 fatalities in Ontario due to fires last year,” said Duncan. “You can probably say that half of those were because they didn’t have working smoke alarms, or at least contributed to the fatality. We know that smoke alarms save lives. That’s a given.”

‘Friend-A-Gram’ fundraiser aimed at spreading kindness BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Kindness is contagious – pass it on. That’s the idea for next month’s Friend-A-Gram fundraiser. The hope is to spread kindness throughout Greater Napanee, while also benefiting the Lennox and Addington Poverty Reduction Committee’s programs. February is International Friendship Month, and Trish Reid, community development worker at the Napanee and Area Com-

munity Health Centre, is hoping local residents will support this cause by purchasing a Friend-A-Gram for $5. “All funds raised stays in this community to support children and youth programs that have been developed to support those in need,” said Reid. Friend-A-Gram cards will be delivered throughout the month of February, along with a small surprise gift from items donated by local businesses. The cards, which all begin with, “I think of you, therefore I am happy,” are

filled out with nice things about the person being sent the card. Cards can be sent anywhere within Napanee, as far as Palace Road, and to Deseronto. The Lennox and Addington Poverty Reduction Committee works to provide support in education, health, affordable housing, skills development and employment and social services and community supports. Right trip at the right time Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s official trip to Israel this past week has garnered as much attention for a PM’s foreign visit as we can remember. Perhaps former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s ‘Team Canada’ trips to China might compete, but Harper’s excursion to Israel has certainly made people sit up and take notice. That is, in some ways, a bit surprising. Since he and his party were elected to government, it’s not as though Harper and the Conservatives have ever been shy in their support of Israel. Among western leaders, Harper, and by extension the Canadian Government, has been about as pro-Israel as they come. So, the fact that Harper chose to visit Israel, or that he would receive such a warm welcome there, shouldn’t come as much of a shock. Harper has come under fire from his opposition critics who suggest that the trip was politically motivated. If it is, it wouldn’t be the first politically-motivated stunt orchestrated by a sitting prime minister, and we’d wager that it won’t be the last. That said, whatever political motives might be playing into the trip — and we’d be naïve to think there isn’t a political angle to this — it’s not as though Harper’s support of Israel is a surprise to anyone. We suspect that, when it comes to Israel, his feelings are sincere. Further, his government has been scrupulously consistent when it comes to Israel; this is hardly coming out of the blue. But has Harper benefitted politically from the trip? We’d have to say yes. Several days of (generally) positive coverage in the media, coupled with the fact his political competitors Thomas Mulcair and Justin Trudeau have been getting zero coverage (positive or negative) has to be considered a good thing for the Harper and the Conservatives. Remember, the Conservatives have been reeling for several months in the wake of the senate expense scandal. While the trip to Israel might have ‘changed the channel’ only temporarily, the fact that the channel has changed must be welcome news for the Tory leadership. We recall several weeks ago, when news of Harper’s trip to Israel was first mentioned, some pundits speculated that it would be the PM’s last hurrah before tendering his resignation. That speculation seemed unlikely at the time, and now that the trip is almost over, it seems even more unlikely Harper is going to call it quits. They do say a trip to the Holy Land can be reinvigorating, after all.

Just a bad place for a landfill As we step into the new year, concerned citizens enter Year 16 in stopping Waste Management from trying again to build a megadump on fractured bedrock in Greater Napanee. In 2006, the Minister of Environment turned down the company’s first attempt because of its failure to adequately characterize the complex geology at the site. In 2012 the Ministry of the Environment allowed WM to start an environmental assessment of a second proposal to build a megadump in Greater Napanee. However, the environmental assessment process has been stalled since concerned citizens forced WM to undertake proper investigations in

the closure of its existing 60-yearold Richmond Landfill. WM’s Richmond Landfill closure plan is currently being challenged by local residents and the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte in a process under the Environmental Review Tribunal, an independent and quasi-judicial body of Ontario. The investigations have been revealing and the results disturbing. Last week, the Concerned Citizens Committee of Tyendinaga and Environs held a press conference in Napanee to inform the broader public of the results of these investigations. Off-site contamination from the landfill (which also includes other chemicals) exceeds the MOE’s Reasonable Use policy guidelines. The senior hydrogeologist for the CCCTE, Wilf Ruland, stated, “the only reason the off-site contamination was found, was diligent sleuthing by hydrogeologists working for the CCCTE, MBQ and MOE.

It’s a great gray and snowy winter NLY during the tourist season has Highway 33 between Wellington and Bloomfield seen such traffic. Two weeks ago an e-mail came in with an attached photo of a great gray owl. The large owl — in fact, the largest in North America, had been spotted on a hydro pole just east of the Fields of West Lake event centre, and word soon spread via my daily bird report on my website and the popular Internet listserv, Ontario Birds, known in the birding circles as simply, Ontbirds. What made this sighting so unusual is that great gray owls weren’t expected in this part of Ontario at all this winter. Other than one seen 10 days earlier at Kingston’s Lemoine Point, this was the first great gray to appear in eastern Ontario. Another did turn up north of Oshawa a few days ago, so it would seem that this huge owl species is starting to make its way south from its northern breeding grounds. So far north and remote, in fact, that few great gray owls ever see a human being or a car. This unassuming demeanour is why great grays can be approached rather closely before they show any alarm. However, with the majority of birders and photographers

today following the established Birders Code of Ethics, pretty much gone is the panting posse of overzealous birders that have harassed this diurnal owl in the past, preventing it from feeding. With today’s powerful zoom lenses the length of a person’s arm, there is no need to approach these birds closely for a photo. Only during periodic irruptions when it is forced to leave its usual northern haunts in search of food do we get to see this magnificent owl. Its virtually silent flight has given it the nickname, “phantom of the north”. By way of clarification, the word “gray” in its name is spelled thusly, and not with an “e” as we might expect. The names of our North American birds are determined by the American Ornithologists Union, and names cannot be changed either in content or spellings. Hence, we have gray catbird, clay-colored sparrow and a host of others with American spellings. To change it would be no less insensitive than changing the spelling of a person’s name simply because we prefer it another way. The great gray owl has not been the only northern visitor to our area this winter. Snowy owls – dozens of them, are in the area

Outdoor Rambles right now. One has been hanging out for several weeks north of Wellington, and others have turned up, sometimes in alarming numbers, on Wolfe Island, Amherst Island and at Presqu’ile Park. In fact, this is the largest irruption of this Arctic species in over four decades. An irruption in birders’ terms is when an incursion of a particular species of bird takes place in the Quinte area that normally doesn’t winter here. We can only speculate as to the reason for the high numbers during these irruptions, but we believe it to be tied into a good breeding year in the Arctic, perhaps coupled with a crash in lem-

ming population, their favourite food. This, in turn, forces some of them to seek a food supply elsewhere. It hasn’t been easy for them either as the ice storm, in late December, sealed the surface of the snow so meadow voles (field mice) could not be obtained. Conditions have improved somewhat, but it has created issues with these owls finding enough food to sustain them. This seems to be the year for visitors in the bird world. Shortly after the ice storm last month, a U.S. resident arrived from her New Jersey home to spend the Christmas holidays at her summer home near Cherry Valley. Just for entertainment, she decided to scatter some bird feed on the ground in two or three places outside her home, and then wait and see what might turn up. Almost immediately, a male Harris’s Sparrow, in striking adult plumage, could not resist the temptation to accept the offering. It had come a long way, from the stunted boreal forests of western Canada and Hudson Bay areas. Its presence was doubly exciting as this was an adult bird, normally less inclined to wander than the immature birds we have seen in the past in our area.

The scattered feed was also appreciated by no fewer than three white-throated sparrows and a fox sparrow, species that normally migrate further south in the winter. Some bird enthusiasts spend hundreds of dollars on sophisticated bird feeders in the hopes of attracting something special. This person proved that scattering feed with reckless abandon on the ground can pay off in handsome dividends as well. Once again, the presence of this bird attracted a bevy of hopeful birders, most of who got a chance to see the western visitor. But, getting back to the owls, your chances of seeing a snowy owl are pretty good this winter, given their high numbers. As for the great gray owl, hopefully it will remain in the area for a little while, giving everyone a chance to see this exceptional bird that has decided to make Wellington its temporary home. A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago January 22, 1964 n Lennox and Addington County council tapped Doug Brown to be its warden for the upcoming year. At 34, Brown was already a political veteran. As he was being chosen county warden, Brown had already served three years as reeve of Camden East Township and was about to enter his fourth. Brown had also served a total of nine years as a member of township council. Municipal politics ran in the family — Brown’s grandfather, Fred Brown, had served as L&A Warden in 1936. Brown was the 17th warden to be chosen from Camden East Township. n While one politician was getting a warm welcome to a new office, another politician was getting a decidedly less-than-warm welcome from an aggressive dog. Local Progressive Conservative MP Douglas Alkenbrack was making a call on a home in Odessa when he was attacked by a dog, and bitten in both of his legs. The wounds required eight stitches to close. The MP took the incident in playfully partisan stride. “It was a Grit dog (I could feel his teeth gritting into me), but he had Tory tastes.”

35 Years Ago January 24, 1979 n A 21-year-old Erinsville man was killed when the snowmobile he was piloting hit a parked car on the east shoulder of Highway 41, about 25 km north of County Road 4. The snowmobile, driven by Keven J. Lachapelle, was headed north when it hit the left rear end of the car. The snowmobile driver was thrown off the machine and into the northbound lane of the highway. No charges were laid in the incident. n And off-ice brou-ha-ha at a midget game at the Napanee Memorial Arena between Gananoque and Napanee resulted in charges being laid against a couple of spectators. In the dying minutes of the game, some Gananoque players in the penalty box got into an altercation with a pair of spectators aged 16 and 18, both from Napanee. The young spectators were subsequently charged with causing a disturbance. The incident also put a stop to the game on the ice. There was 1:22 left to go in the third period when the referees decided to end the game early. Gan won 5-3.

End of an era: The last of a Gibbard generation Editor’s Note: The following piece was written by Deb Thibault, who is currently compiling a history of Gibbard Furniture. As part of that research, Thibault interviewed Jeanie Gibbard Hersenhoren, the last living member of the Gibbard family to work in the factory. Gibbard Hersenhoren passed away on Jan. 8 at the age of 94.

Special to the Beaver Last week I received an email from Richard Gibbard informing me of the passing of his aunt, and as I read the death notice of Jeanie Gibbard Hersenhoren, I was taken back to an interview I was privileged to have had with Jeanie in her Belmont home a few years ago. When I called to arrange the meeting, I am not sure what I was expecting but, I did know that Jeanie was in her 90s and is the greatgranddaughter of John Gibbard, the founder of Gibbard Furniture. After telling Jeanie who I was and why I wanted to talk to her, she told me that she would love to talk to me, however she would have to check her social calendar to arrange a date and would let me know in a few days what would work for her. Sure enough, a few days later she phoned back and we had a date. To my utmost surprise Jeanie was a vibrant, knowledgeable, larger than life, take charge person ready and willing to share her heritage with me! Her first words were, “Well now where shall we start.” She proceeded to tell me the family stories; folklore or truth about how John Gibbard went to his uncle’s to learn the carpenter and joiners trade at 18 years old and then came back to Napanee in 1835 to visit his mother; but after walking to catch a boat for a new job in the U.S he “missed the boat” at Culbertson’s Warf (Deseronto). He was an expert craftsman and made fanning mills, coffins and fine furniture. She showed me every piece of Gibbard furniture in her apartment and told me the history of it and made note of the fact that it was a John, Tom, George, Ernest or Bruce, those names defining when it was made in the factory. We talked about the homes the Gibbard’s built and or occupied in Napanee, like the 204 East St. house that her grandfather

William Thomas presented to George and Marguerite as a wedding present in 1909, and the magnificent staircase that her father had made for his bride in that home. Upon viewing some pictures I brought along, Jeanie showed me the bedroom window at 174 Centre St. N., where she was born to George and Marguerite (Hall) Gibbard, and let me know at that time they already had a son Ernest and two daughters Elizabeth and Marjorie. Jeanie proceeded to tell the story of how her grandfather William Thomas Gibbard sat on the front porch of the house awaiting the birth of what he hoped would be another grandson. When George came downstairs and announced, “Well Father it’s another girl”, W.T. responded, “Well it’s too late to even up now George”, and proceeded up the street to his home at 194 Centre St. N. Jeanie commented that she really would have loved “Tom”. She spoke of what it was like being part of the First Family of Napanee, the respect that it commanded, the social aspect and responsibility she had as a child. She told of the wonder she beheld as she and her family moved into the modern big white house on Piety Hill. Her father had decided to build a new home in 1927 at 243 Dundas St. located at the corner of Dundas and York Streets. She took me on a tour of the house in her mind and I can vividly recall the journey of marble floors, walnut panelling, laundry shoots, and

library with walnut bookcases, sunrooms and pink tiles in her bathroom. She recalled with such happiness the friendship that was forged between her and the late Bruce Roffey McPherson (late owner and president of The Gibbard Furniture Shops Limited). “He is without a doubt my oldest and dearest friend in the entire world; in fact, I have known him forever.” She tells the story of how Bruce’s dad Jack had sold furniture for her father beginning in 1916 and in 1920 Jack and his wife Janet moved to Napanee where Jack became the Sales Manager of The Gibbard Furniture Company of Napanee Limited. They took up residence in the Centre and Thomas Street Gibbard home. With tears rolling down her face she expressed her heartfelt anguish over the untimely death of her father George in January of 1929. “He said he would see me at noon, as he passed by my bedroom that morning, he always talked to me before he headed to the factory. I remember mother calling the factory asking if father had left yet and the awful realization that he would not be coming home.” She commented on the fact that her father was a gifted businessman and with the help of his devoted staff he introduced the Gibbard trademark and guarantee tag to every piece of furniture. Under her father’s direction the plant tripled in size and stature. At the time of her father’s death, her brother

Ernest was away at school in Toronto but came home to run the factory. He was only 19 years old but he was a fantastic ballplayer. He was the organizer of baseball in Napanee and led his teams to championships on a regular basis. Jeanie started working in the factory when she was 16 years old. Her brother whom she affectionately refers to as G Ernie G, told her she would be working in the shipping room and to report to Mr. William Vine, the shipping foreman. It was here that she learned to do shipping invoices and established a rapport with the factory men. I took numerous pictures of factory workers with me and Jeanie was able to identify 95 per cent of them and was able to tell me where they worked in the factory as well! Jeanie went on to tell how she is the last Gibbard to ever work in the factory and that due to the unfortunate times the factory fell into bankruptcy in 1940. Her responsibilities shifted from processing shipping orders to helping close out the business her family had established four generations ago. It was a time of great sadness in her family but she was elated a few months later to hear of Jack McPherson purchasing the assets of the business in hopes of re-establishing the business and the Gibbard name. Jack had left the Gibbard factory in early 1933 to take the position of Sales Manager for Simmons Canada in Montreal.

GIBBARD | ‘An accomplished woman’ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 After her work was done at the factory, Jeanie left Napanee and went to live with her sister Marjorie and her family in Montreal. While in Montreal Jeanie met an air force man by the name of Mel Watson; they were married in Napanee at the East Street house that her mother and her husband Mr. George Challies had purchased. This being the same house that was a wedding present to her and Jeanie’s father George in 1909. In Jeanie’s often humorous spirit she said of her marriage to Mel “that didn’t last long.” Jeanie took up residence in Toronto after she left Montreal and it was here that Jeanie did meet the love of her life in the person of Samuel David Hersenhoren, an accomplished violinist, musician, conductor. ‘Sammy’, as she affectionately calls him, “was a wonderful, wonderful husband and father, you could write a book about him.” Sammy made his debut at Massey Hall at the age of 11 years. In 1925 he made his radio debut and played in the New Symphony Orchestra. He was the founder and conductor of the New World Chamber Orchestra. In 1933 he began conducting the orchestra for CBC programs. From 1941 to 1945 he conducted 25 Victory Loan Shows and in 1945 he started a long association

with comedians Wayne and Shuster. In 1950 he conducted at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto for the first Canadian Ballet Festival. His enthusiastic and consistency expert performance of any genre of music contributed significantly to the musical education of all Canadians. He is so accomplished you can read about him in the Canadian Encyclopedia or visit www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com. While sharing about Sammy, Jeanie can’t help but laugh and give that infectious wink of hers (you know a story is coming) as she tells us about Sammy having to go into the Bank of Montreal in Napanee to cash a cheque Jeanie had written him. Sammy asked the teller if she needed identification, she looked at him and said, “Oh no that’s OK, I know who you are, you’re Jeanie Gibbard’s husband.” With that Jeanie gives a little shrug and smiles. Jeanie was an accomplished woman in her own right; she was a successful entrepreneur, a who’s who planner for numerous musicians and celebrities, hostess, fashion guru, Liberty magazine nominated her as best dressed for many years in the 1950s. She was an advocate and founding member of PAL, a national organization dedicated to providing affordable housing and care for members of Canada’s professional and per-

forming arts. In 1947 she was an instrumental committee member of the National Cancer Institute of Canada and through agreements with the Canadian Cancer Society and the Department of Health and Welfare the new organization began fundraising for cancer research. We know them as the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institution today. The organizations and committees that Jeanie was a part of would take up mega space — suffice to say she was a very active woman! Jeanie and Sammy have one daughter Suzi, whom they both treasured. One of the first pictures Jeanie pointed out to me in her apartment was that of her and Suzi taken about 1953 or so. The picture was on the front page of the Globe & Mail newspaper for Mother’s Day that year. She told me, “I have a wonderful daughter Suzi, she looks after me you know and that’s not easy.” Of her many memories she tells her most memorable were at the cottage at Long Reach on Hickory Lane. The cottage was actually a tenant house on the original farm in Adolphustown. It was on the south side of Hickory Lane and Jeanie and Sammy decided to have the house moved closer to their lot and the water. They hired a fellow from Deseronto who moved it during the winter by putting it on

Lumberjacks show why they’re a cut above College’s loggersports team carves it up at Greater Napanee’s WinterChill Festival

APANEE’S Market Square may not be densely populated with trees, but on Saturday it was home to a group of lumberjacks. And their chainsaws were not idle. As part of the Winter Chill celebrations Sir Sandford Fleming’s Loggersports Team was on hand to demonstrate some of the events they would take part in during a competition. From axe throwing to standing block chops, they performed two shows in front of a captivated audience. “These events spread the word about the sport and show how much fun they can be and how entertaining they can be,� said Nick Hall, coach of the Fleming team. When not performing at community events across the province they travel across eastern Canada to some of the premier lumber sport competitions in the country. “It was losing a lot of

popularity in Ontario until recently,� Hall said of the sport. “The past couple of years we’ve been seeing more competitions and more students that compete are staying with it after they leave.� Hall says the sport’s history derives from simple beginnings. Lumberjacks would challenge each other to see who could cut down more trees. Camped out in the middle of the woods for weeks on end, a bit of friendly competition was a way to help stay focused. From those friendly backwoods competitions it has grown to a series of events that lend itself well to engaging an audience. Though some of the events may be slow to develop, they often lead to exciting finishes as it comes down to the wire. A perfect example of that is the final event they demonstrated. Known as the ‘water boil’, the object is to see which lumberjack can get a container of soapy water to boil over the side the quickest. All they’re given is some matches, a hatchet, some

dry cedar and the container of water. It’s up to them to chop the kindling, strike the match on the side of the hatchet and build a fire. “The work gear that they used then is nothing like the racing gear we use now,� said Hall. “Essentially it’s the same feeling and all the events we do are based on events that used to mean something in the woods.� Speed is critical in a chainsaw race, but so is safety. The clock may be running and the competitors are rushed, but they always have an eye for safety as well. “(We look out for the) safety for the competitors but safety for the crowds as well,� said Hall. “Our hands and our feet are always covered in Chain Mail or steel toe.� After their stay in Napanee the Loggersports Team will now turn their attention to a pair of upcoming competitions. This Saturday they head to Montreal’s McGill University and on Feb. 8 they head to Halifax’s Dalhousie University.

Light falling snow and seasonable temperatures provided the perfect backdrop to the downtown and Market Square event, leading to a huge attendance. “Seemed like a couple of weeks ago it was going to be way too cold and we’re

The day’s entertainment, a demonstration by the Fleming Loggersports Team, drew large crowds to both of their shows. “They seemed to really hit it off with the crowd,” said Hagerman. “I think it’s something we could make a tradition, maybe get them in to some other events.”

Mother Nature’s generous piling of frozen precipitation allowed for the return of snow mountain, which was a favourite among the kids in attendance. Meanwhile on Dundas Street there was non-stop ball hockey action, with two ‘rinks’ set up on the street. This was the first the town opted to hold the tournament in the downtown core, hoping to encourage more traffic to the local shops. In previous years it was held in the Market Square with the

no doubt return again next winter. Slowly but surely the event has begun to gain traction and is growing into a great draw for the town. As Saturday’s numbers showed, provided the weather co-operates, the town has plenty of interest in an outdoor festival every January.

Comical approach for Deseronto park fundraiser BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Fundraising for Deseronto’s Centennial Park is off to a strong start this year with an upcoming Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Show planned this spring to raise funds for the project. A dinner and comedy show is scheduled for March 1 at the Deseronto Community Centre. Cocktail hour will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

“The first show, held in Oct. 2013, was an overwhelming success. It was a sold out show and received very positive feedback from all who attended, with many requests for a second show, explained Dana Valentyne, community development officer for the Town of Deseronto and a member of the Centennial Park Revitalization committee. “Tickets are selling fast, purchase yours today to avoid disappointment.” All proceeds will go toward the Centennial Park

Revitalization Project. Last year, a new playground was put in at Centennial Park, replacing the old equipment. This year, the committee hopes to continue with revitalizing the shoreline with a walking trail, benches, picnic tables and other improvements. To date, the committee has raised $148,000 of $195,000 through government grants, the Town of Deseronto, local donors and fundraising projects. A large donation was made by the federal government in

FIRE CHIEFS FROM FRONTENAC LENNOX AND ADDINGTON COUNTIES HIGHLIGHTS CO SAFETY WITH PASSING OF NEW CO DETECTOR LAW The Ontario legislature passed the Hawkins Gignac Act and amended the Fire Protection & Prevention Act requiring the installation of a carbon monoxide detector adjacent to all sleeping areas in any new or existing residence served by ANY kind of fuel-burning appliance, including gas furnaces, gas water heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, generators, and kerosene heaters.

Exposure to CO can cause flu-like symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, burning eyes, confusion, drowsiness and even loss of consciousness. Unsafe levels of CO can be detected by carbon monoxide detectors, which are constructed to detect airborne concentration levels of CO in parts per million (ppm) and sound an audible alarm when harmful levels are present.

For the best protection, it is important to have fuel burning appliances regularly serviced. Never start an automobile or generator in a garage without first opening the overhead door for proper ventilation. Snow on your driveway is seldom more than a pain in the back; however snow on your roof can lead to leakage, even if your roof is new. The culprit is ice damming, the insidious snow-melting phenomenon that is all too familiar to many homeowners. This year mother-nature has been relentless with her fluctuations in temperature and the recent ice storm. Blockages on roofs created by melted snow that refreezes can destroy roofs

and cause water to leak into our homes once under the shingles. Although ice dams can form anywhere on a roof, they form most readily at the bottom edge of roofs, valleys and areas where the slope might change. Most roofing products depend upon gravity to keep water from entering the house. Gravity pulls rain water or snow meltwater down the roof. Most roofing products are separate pieces that overlap, this overlap effect enables them to shed

water. This simple system works fine as long as the water keeps moving down the roof, ice dams, however, cause water to go up the roof. Ice dams can develop from periods of heavy freezing rain, and moderate or heavy snow conditions with an air temperature significantly below freezing, and this year we have had both. Freezing rain almost instantly covers your roof in a sheet of ice. If temperatures don’t get high enough to quickly melt off the ice, over the days following the initial precipitation, the ice will slowly be melting from the bottom up due to heat loss in the roof space (attic). If the air temperature is significantly below freezing when this happens, this newly thawed ice will refreeze. If enough of it accumulate it will

So now that we have good insulation levels, what about ventilation? Roof and attic ventilation is generally a good thing. Adding ventilation to an attic may stop ice dams from forming. The goal is to keep the attic cold in winter with good ventilation; however, it will not work in all cases. In fact, in some rare instances adding roof or soffit vents may increase the risk of ice dams. The reason lies in the often-neglected problem of air leakage, or air loss Air leakage or air loss, is the leaking of warm, moist air from the house into roof spaces. Air loss occurs in every house. Warm air is light and buoyant, so it is always seeking a way out, in the up direction, and up is where your roof is. It’s not surprising then that the leakage of warm air from the heated spaces in your house is the pri-

mary cause of the melting snow that is at the heart of ice damming. The job of attic ventilation is to evict the warm air that has taken up residence in the roof spaces (attic). If a house has only a small amount of warm air loss occurring, then it will only need a relatively small amount of ventilation to deal with it. Conversely, if a house has many warm air leaks, it may be impossible to add enough attic ventilation to overcome the resulting heat build-up. Or, if the warm air exit is very close to the roof boards, and hence close to the snow, it may be impossible to mix it with enough cold air soon enough to prevent it from melting the snow. See Ice

Since this ice dam will block the ice melt’s access to the gutter system, the melting water now has nowhere to go; it is trapped between the ice and the roof. This trapped water will find a way to get through roof membrane and into your building. For years the mantra being chanted on correcting the cause of ice damming has been “insulation and ventilation”. The prevailing opinion has been that adding insulation and ventilation to attic spaces will stop the snow melting. It is easy to see that if a house has little insulation, heat loss from the house will cause snow to melt. If we can keep the roof cold, we won’t get much melting, and won’t get ice dams. Luckily, upgrading insulation in attics and roof spaces is often easily done.

Some of these products are rubberized, while others include styrene. Some are reinforced with fiberglass mats, while others are not. They work by creating a solid barrier to water wherever they are applied. It is similar to shrink wrapping that portion of your

It is virtually impossible to stop ice dams from forming. Some methods attempt to use heated electrical wire which is applied to the lower edge of your roof or which sits in your gutter. Often these methods have little effect, in some instances, they can be dangerous. The newer technology has leaned in the direction of not trying to stop the ice dam from forming, but to simply stop the

roof. When applied according to manufacturer's specifications all of them can be highly effective in preventing leakage from ice damming. So what can you do to fix this problem? Unfortunately, most of your options are preventative measures. Once the ice has formed, you are usually stuck with it until it melts on its own. Any attempt to break up the ice could actually end up damaging the roof as the ice is often stuck to the roofing mate-

rial and any tools used to remove it could tear the roofing. The most important thing is to keep your roof in good condition. There are a lot of areas that the typical homeowner can attend to, but ice dams should be left to professionals. Ice dam remediation can be dangerous. While such winter storms don’t happen often not keeping up on maintenance can lead to a lot of troubles. Make sure you are prepared for the next storm.

ay this for the Napanee Raiders and their once long odds for a playoff berth — they're certainly making it interesting. The suddenly resurgent club pulled off a home-and-home sweep of the Campbellford Rebels this week to pull within four points of the final playoff slot. Napanee followed a 5-3 road win on Saturday with a 6-3 home triumph on Tuesday. Both games followed a similar recipe of quick pressure right from the opening face-off and piling early goals before the Rebels could find their legs. “That was the game plan, we wanted to attack Campbellford and we did,” said Raiders head coach Mike Hartwick.

Zach Knapp-Hermer, Bud Norris and Murray Keenan got the home team off and running on Tuesday, each scoring a goal in just over a three minute span of the first. Campbellford pulled to within a goal in the second and seemed to have momentum on their side when the Raiders’ Alex Leclerc took a four minute spearing penalty. Napanee responded in a big way however, keeping the Rebels off the board for their entire power-play and potting one of their own just as they returned to even strength. Ryan Casselman provided the offense. “It was not a good penalty,” said Hartwick. “We took a couple of selfish penalties and they know it. That was a huge kill. The penalty killers did a great job. Josh Murphy, (Joel) Ferland, Murray (Keenan). They blocked those shots and it was a huge lift for sure.” The Rebels would make it interesting with an early third period goal, but it

a three game winning streak, matching a season high they’ve done on two other occasions. Now at 1416-1-2 on the year with 31 points, they are breathing down the necks of the 1614-1-2 Rebels, who have 35

points, and the 16-11-0-4 Port Hope Panthers who have 36. Napanee and Campbellford both have seven left to play, the Panthers nine.

Just about every penalty in the rule book was assessed to the Deseronto Storm on Saturday night as they racked up 87 minutes of sin bin time. Not surprisingly the visiting Port Hope Panthers took advantage of their short-handed opponents, scoring seven powerplay goals en route to the 13-1 victory. Chris Rogalsky and Mitch Goodfellow were the Storm’s top offenders, earning 16 minutes worth of time through fighting and abuse-of-official penalties. Both were given game misconducts. Riley Muise, Brandon Turner, Josh Cameron and Tyler Diamond each earned double digits worth of penalty minutes as well. Port Hope was by no means innocent either, collecting 44 minutes worth of time in the box. Cameron made use of one of those six power-plays, scoring the Storm’s only goal at the 8:40 mark of the second. Muise and Mitch Thompson earned assists on the play. That cut the Panthers’ lead to 6-1 at the time.

Down a man for much of the game, the Storm’s goaltending duo of Brock Tufts and affiliated player Liam Smith faced a staggering 95 shots on the night. Tufts gave up the first 11 goals on 71 shots before giving way to Smith, who made his Junior C debut in the third period. Thursday’s game in Picton was a little calmer, but ultimately yielded a similar 11-0 Storm loss on the scoresheet. In this game the Storm collected just six minutes worth of penalties and allowed one goal on three power-plays. Tufts played the entire game, making 41 saves. With the losses the Storm fall to 3-28 on the year. They’ll host Campbellford tomorrow night for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. They’ll be short staffed as players serve suspicions following Saturday’s melee. They hit the road Saturday to face the Rebels on the road. On Sunday they wrap up a busy three day, three-arena trip with a 2:30 p.m. showdown in Napanee against the Raiders at the SPC. The Storm will look to end their 14-game losing streak.

An early 3-0 advantage didn’t hold for the NDSS Golden Hawks boys’ hockey team Thursday, costing them a point in KASSAA action at the SPC. Their opponents, the Holy Cross Crusaders, showed why they’re leading the league with a spirited 4-3 comeback shootout victory. Napanee’s disciplined play both fuelled their attack and stymied the Crusaders’ early on as the Hawks drew five penalties and were assessed none. “The boys kept their heads,” Hawks head coach Jeff Birchard said of his team. “(Holy Cross) was getting chippy but the boys played well. I told them if a guy’s going to give you a shot, you’ve got to walk away. You can’t turn around and whack him. You can play that game with them all day, you won't get ahead.” Ryan Smith got the Hawks on the board first, potting a goal just seconds after his goalie Jon White made a huge save at the other end. swered to force a shootout. After stopping the first four attempts, White finally relented and allowed a goal to the fifth shooter. Napanee went 0-5 in their attempts, forcing them to settle for just one point. “He’s always been steady in net,” Birchard said of White. “In that shootout he gave us a chance to win.” With the win the Crusaders improved to 5-0 in the standings, two points

better than the 4-1 Frontenac Falcons and Regi Panthers. The Golden Hawks picked up their third point of the year, moving to 1-3-1. They sit sixth, just ahead of KCVI and Bayridge. Thursday’s game marked the final KASSAA action before the league goes on hiatus for the exam break. The Hawks return to the ice on Feb. 4 when they travel to Kingston to face Bayridge.

Midget Stars knock off Uxbridge Beaver Sports

Uxbridge were not happy to see Napanee’s Major Midgets back for the tie-breaking game. Adam Weatherhead again took the local boys up by one in the second, followed by a goal by defenceman Josh Benn midway through the third. Penalties challenged the Stars but the boys preserved the victory. Defenceman Jeremy Martin shot into the empty net at 1:18 to seal the deal at 3-1. Everyone gave a fantastic effort with tremendous results. Next up is Pickering in a Lakeshore quarter-final series. Along with the Midget teams, most Napanee Stars squads began their playoffs this past week. n The OMHA playoffs could hardly have started better for the Boyd Electric Peewee Stars. Despite holding down the sixth seed, the Stars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in their best-of-five series against the favoured Whitby White Wildcats with a 3-1 win on the road on Saturday and a 4-3 win at home on Sunday. Stars had a chance to sweep the series in a game last night in Whitby; the results of that game were not known at presstime. In Game 1 in Whitby, Napanee jumped out to a 20 first-period lead and never looked back. Kyle Garrett opened the scoring with four minutes left in the first, converting on passes from Ryan Kirkpatrick and Corbin Gibson. Less than a minute later, blueliner Nick Kennelly buried a point shot, taking a feed from Garrett. Liam Wilkinson added an insurance goal early in the third, with Justin Jones and Cal DuChene earning assists. Netminder Bailey Maracle was spectacular between the pipes, making several game-saving stops to get the victory. In Napanee for Game 2, the Stars once again jumped out to an early lead when Jones buried a blistering shot past the Whitby goalie. Wilkinson picked up an assist on the play. Whitby would tie the game at 1-1 before the end of the first frame, but Josh Cudd re-established the lead early in the second, beating the goalie with a shot just inside the post. Kirkpatrick would add to Napanee’s lead with a sniper shot in the second, converting on a pass from Matt Sager. Garrett

snapped one in on a rush for what would stand as the eventual game winner. Despite the Wildcats’ best efforts, the Stars held them off as time ran down. Goaltender Murray Craig stymied Whitby on what few chances the visitors had to mount a comeback. If the Stars didn’t wrap up the series in Whitby last night, they will host the Wildcats for Game 4 on the Goodyear Rink Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Game 5, if necessary, is to take place in Whitby on Sunday. n The L&A Mutual Insurance Minor Atom Stars began their first round of the OMHA playoffs in Whitby on Saturday and back home Sunday afternoon. The Stars came out of the gate with a hard forecheck in both games but could not solve the Whitby Blue’s goaltending tandem and were shutout in both contests 3-0 and 50. The Minor Atoms also received great goaltending by Ryan Aldridge and Nathaniel Cinnamon. The Stars now have their backs against the wall as they face elimination Friday night in Whitby. n The Napanee Exit Realty Minor Bantam Stars scored a Game 1 victory in their series against Port Perry but lost the next two and trail the series 2-1.

Napanee will look to get even at home tonight with an 8 p.m. puck drop. n The Spuds Griddle Atoms shutout Trenton 2-0 in Game 1 of their first to six point series. n In regular season play the McDougall Insurance Novice AEs faced off against the top team in their division, Quinte West, at home on Saturday. Even though the team was shutout 4-0 they played a great game with outstanding goaltending from Ian Isbester and Aiden Vallier. The team played a great game on Sunday in Wellington against the PEC Kings. The squad was trailing 5-1 after two periods of play. They turned it on in the third scoring six goals. They fell short by a goal, but it was a great come back. Daniel Chase scoring a hat trick in the game as well as an assist. Other goal scorers were Benjamin Buxton, Vermilyea, Zered Haller and Connor McGinnis. Assists went to Vermilyea, Duncan Clarke and Buxton. The team has their last two regular season games this weekend and then get ready for the playoffs. The Country Tradition Novice Stars kept their perfect record intact with a pair of wins. They bested Trenton 10-4 and Whitby White 6-1 to move to 24-0.

Relaxation Comes To Downtown Napanee

TransCanada intends to proceed with the NGS, subject to mitigation, impact management measures, and obtaining the necessary approvals,” a press release from TransCanada’s NGS team states. However, Webster said there are more requirements before the project can move forward. “On the provincial level, after we are told the review is complete, we will also have to get our Environmental Compliance Approval, so we also have to get those and they’re very specific to the operation of the plant. And on the municipal side, we still have to get site line approval and we also have to get all our building permits. So there are still a number of things to do,” he said. The NGS has been proposed to be located on the existing Ontario Power Generation Lennox Generating Station site. It is said to provide reliable, on-demand power to Ontario homes, schools, institutions and business by replacing retired coal and nuclear capacity, supporting nuclear refurbishment and backstopping wind and solar resources. The Environmental Review Report, and other information regarding the NGS, can be found online at www.napaneegs.com. Kingston Lacrosse to host info and registration sessions at Napanee’s SPC KLA to again include Napanee-based house league teams Beaver Sports

fter a successful first season of lacrosse in Napanee, the Kingston Lacrosse Association is looking to build on local interest in the sport. The KLA will be holding a series of Napanee registration and information sessions at the Strathcona Paper Centre over the next few months, the first of which is happening this Saturday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. With the help of Napanee volunteers, the KLA extended its house league program to include Napanee-based house league lacrosse teams in 2013. About 100 boys and girls —

some from as far away as Picton, Tamworth and Stirling — enrolled in the sport, and played against Kingston-based players in May and June last year. Organizers say they are hoping to at least maintain that level of interest, if not add new players to the sport. The KLA’s goal is to have at least one Napanee-based team in each age category, including separate boys and girls teams. “We were really pleased with how our first season went,” said Napanee volunteer Seth DuChene. “What few wrinkles we had last year we hope to have ironed out for Year 2. We certainly have something

The Council of the Corporation of the Town of Greater Napanee intends to consider a Zoning By-law to amend Zoning By-law 0222. Pursuant to Section 34(12) of the Planning Act (R.S.O. 1990), Council will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, to outline the content, effect of the By-law, as well as showing the lands affected. All those interested are hereby invited to attend the public meeting and express their view on the Zoning By-law amendment.

An application was received from Laurel and John Alkenbrack to rezone approximately 320 sq m of a 1.6 ha parcel being severed from a larger parcel of land. Rezoning is from the Environment Protection (EP) zone to an appropriate residential zone to allow construction of a single detached dwelling house.

An application was received from W. Leonard Waddingham to rezone a parcel of land located along County Road No.2 in Lot 16 of Concession 1 of the geographic Township of Richmond to permit the construction of a single detached dwelling house (see Key Map).

The property is located on the north side of County Road No.5 in part of Lot 21, Concession 7, in the geographic Township of North Fredericksburgh, as shown in the attached key map. Other applications
