Britt Benn says that, when she was asked to be a part of the Canadian Olympic rugby sevens team headed to compete in Rio de Janeiro later this summer, it was a moment to remember. “Instantly, I was overwhelmed with emotion,” she said of learning that she had made the team. “My eyes started to water, happy tears, (thinking about) all of the hard work and the sacrifices and the support that I’ve received.” Although news of her selection didn’t come until Thursday, she knew after a five-minute meeting with her coach on Wednesday. “I went into the room and he just kind of looked at me in the eye and said, ‘Do you think you can improve between now and the Olympics?’ I said, ‘There’s always time to improve.’ He said, ‘Good answer.’ Then he reached his hands out and said, ‘Congratulations, you’re going to the Olympics,’” she recalled. Benn was quick to thank her parents for their unwavering support — “even when they didn’t understand why I played the damn sport,” she added jokingly — as well as to thank all those who helped her along the way, including family, friends, coaches and her hometown Napanee, where she first learned the sport while competing for the NDSS Golden Hawks.

Britt Benn (centre) will don the maple leaf to represent Team Canada once more, this time for Canada’s rugby sevens team destined for the Rio Olympics next month. It’s been a long road to the Olympics. After more than a decade of playing both traditional 15-player rugby and the faster seven-player version, she says there have been a lot of sacrifices made to get to this point. And while the goal may have been to get to the Olympics, the new goal is to make sure she and her teammates don’t leave Rio without a gold medal. That means keeping the eye on the prize rather than get too

caught up in the Olympic experience. “It’s going to be breathtaking. We have no idea how big this is, and this is something I’m excited for, but I’m also staying focused. We have one goal going into the Olympics, and that’s to bring home gold, and that’s what I’m driven to. I’m looking forward to going to Rio, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with the women that I’ve worked very hard with over the last year-and-a-half

to get where I am today, and to share those memories and experiences with,” she said. The rugby sevens Olympic tournament will take place from Aug. 6-11. Team Canada’s women’s side will play its first game the day after the opening ceremonies — as a result, Benn won’t take part in the opening ceremonies.

Dry weather prompting fire bans, drought warnings BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

A prolonged lack of precipitation is becoming a serious concerned across the region — from farmers watching crops dry up to conservation authorities issuing drought warnings to municipalities banning open-air burning. For Herb Hart, the owner of Hartacres Grains in Napanee, the dry conditions are something farmers are more accustomed to seeing much later in the season. “It was a dry May, so we’ve had nothing, from the time we planted right through,” he said. “In other years, it’s been dry, but it’s awful early for it to be this dry.” The dry conditions are causing crops to effectively shut down. “We’re talking about starting to combine wheat where we normally don’t harvest wheat until

the last week of July,” he said. “We’ve got some we think that could go now. It’s done. It’s dried down, it’s died down. It has just advanced it that much more with the dry weather.” Because there’s no rain, the prospect of growing second crops is very much diminished. Unfortunately, long-term forecasts are showing more the same weather through the summer: hot and dry. “At this point, we need a good three-day rain — not a heavy downpour, just a nice rain,” said Hart. “With scattered showers, (the moisture is) pretty much gone before it does any good. You need that three-day rain so it soaks in… We’re hitting a critical period right here. Soybeans are starting to flower, and corn is starting to elongate. the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authorities have issued advisories regarding the lack of rain and low water levels. Last Tuesday, the CRCA declared “moderate” drought conditions for its watershed, which suggest a potentially serious water-supply problem. Its water response team recommended that “all water users, residential and commercial, especially those areas that are supplied by a ground water or shore well” to begin implementing water conservation measures. That would include refraining from the outside watering of plants and lawns or washing driveways. Quinte Conservation declared a ‘Level 2’ lowwater condition earlier this week. To date, the watershed area had only received half the rainfall it typically receives in an average year. The conservation authority is asking residents and businesses in the region to reduce non-essential water usage by 20 per cent until the supply is replenished. Greater Napanee and Loyalist Township have each issued total open air burning bans for their municipalities in order to prevent possible brush and forest fires due to the lack of precipitation.

New planters greet CIB judges’ arrival Communities in Bloom committee extends program to Centre St. N., South Fred. Hall

When Community in Bloom judges arrived last night, they undoubtedly would have noted some new planters placed along the sides of Centre Street North in Napanee. The large barrel planters — arranged by the local Communities in Bloom committee with the help of local sponsors — build on the placement of similar planters located in the downtown core, says Greater Napanee Communities in Bloom organizer Kathy Medd. “We’ve done a lot of work in the ‘core’ area of the community, and we’re really now trying to push it out so that we involve more of the municipality, because it does apply to Greater Napanee,” she said. “Last year, our chair Marg Isbester approached a number of businesses and started small with 10 pots, and it really did make a difference with the streetscape along Centre Street,” Medd

said. “What’s nice about it is… Centre Street North is an approach to the core of our community, so I think it just enhances people’s enjoyment as they’re coming into the town.” Planters have also been placed at the South Fredericksburgh Community Hall. All totalled, 20 planters have been installed over the past two years. Besides enlisting the support of both private sponsors and the municipality, the planters — along with other gardens and greenspaces — also rely on the help of volunteers to keep them looking good. “That’s part of the work of the committee — identifying volunteers that are willing to help look after (areas) in town. We’ve got some great volunteers who have adopted gardens and they’re looking after them for us,” she said. All those areas will be seen by the Communities in Bloom judges, who began their evaluation of the town yesterday, and who will depart tomorrow. “This is our fourth year

competing. In 2013, we had three blooms; in 2014, four blooms; 2015, we got five blooms. It has really been a lot of hard work. We’re hoping that we can maintain our five-bloom level — that’s the top level you can go,” said Medd. Although Greater Napanee now competes at the provincial level, it could take part in the national competition in future years. The evaluations conducted by judges in previous years have helped guide the local committee in its beautification efforts and initiatives — including the planter program. “The judges are professionals, and so they’re coming in as volunteers themselves to evaluate the community, and they’re giving us important information,” Medd said. “That information that they’ve provided is like a checklist or a strategic plan that we can implement in addressing things within the community. So, we’ve listened to what they’ve said and we’ve really tried to act on their recommendations.”

THE PROJECTS The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has retained AECOM to undertake two separate Preliminary Design and Class Environmental Assessment Studies for improvements to the Highway 401/County Road 41 interchange (G.W.P. 4459-04-00) and the Highway 401/Palace Road interchange (G.W.P. 4197-13-00). Both projects are located in the Town of Greater Napanee within the County of Lennox and Addington. THE PROCESS Both studies are following the approved planning process for a Group ‘B’ project under the MTO Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000). Two Public Information Centres (PICs) will be held for each study to provide interested parties with the opportunity to discuss the projects and provide input to the Project Team. A Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) will be prepared for each study and made available for public review at the completion of each study. PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE #1 The first of two PICs has been arranged for each study to introduce the studies and present the following for comment: existing conditions, need for improvements, alternatives being considered, criteria proposed to evaluate the alternatives, and next steps. The second PIC for each project will occur early 2017 and will present the evaluation of the alternatives, the Technically Preferred Plan, potential environmental impacts and proposed mitigation measures. Rural residents have added costs I am sure we have all had our fill of urban verses rural taxes, but I feel I must speak up. Urban people seem to think the only difference is water, sewer, lights and sidewalks. One article said, come live in town and see if you get a water and sewer bill. We of course would, but do you think our well water is free? How about our septic systems? Along with the cost to have a dug well comes having to purchase and replace, as time goes on, foot valves, jets and submergible pumps. Our septic systems or holding tanks need to be pumped out, and should our system fail, replacing one costs thousands. Then there is our drinking water; most of us require the installation of ultraviolet systems because our water is not safe to drink without them. We don’t have gas

pumped into our homes, we rely on trucks to deliver our gas, making it more expensive. We also have to pay to rent the tanks. You also have door-todoor mail service. We have had community mail boxes for years now. How do the elderly get their mail? If they can not walk the distance, or have a physical disability, or can’t drive anymore? Our wait times for ambulance and police is much longer than for urban areas. Our insurance rates are a lot more as many of us do not live within a few kilometers of a fire hall. Our hydro delivery rates are the most expensive while urban pays the least. We are the last to have our hydro back on when the system goes down — and out here, it happens a lot. Same can be said for our snowplowing — last again.

Urban dwellers can put their brush and leaves to the curb for pickup, and large items. We must wait for free dump days, and load and unload everything at the dump ourselves. We can not order a pizza and receive free delivery; in my area, we can not even get anyone to deliver. Our only choice for television is to have a dish. Same goes with Internet services; the only option is wireless, and it is the slowest on the planet and the most expensive, but it is the only option. Finally for the young people looking to become a homeowner, rural is their only way to step into the market. So, no, we do not have sewer and water, sidewalks and street lights. A closer look at sustainable farming How should sustainable farming be defined? Life on earth depends on about 6 inches of the earth’s ‘skin’ – the topsoil. Over the approximately 10,000 years of farming, many civilizations have risen and subsequently declined. Some disappeared, some moved to new locations. Some of these movements happened over centuries. Some, with movement denied, declined quite suddenly. Movement today is no longer an option. What was the cause of these declines? Many causes have been postulated, but a common thread, taken from a historical perspective, is topsoil erosion. It takes 500 or more years — depending on a number of factors — for one inch of top soil to be created. Even the invisible loss of topsoil, due to wind, water and tillage erosion causes the loss at a much faster rate. On slopes, loss rates are even higher. For farming to be sustainable, ways must be found and practiced to reduce topsoil loss rates to levels that will allow farming to go on for generations and centuries. The good news is that the knowledge to do this is

here. What is not here is the will — from many farmers, politicians and society at large. The knowledge to make farming sustainable includes many practices. These practices will vary depending on soils, slopes, crops grown, finances, the farmer’s knowledge, equipment available and fertilizers used, particularly the availability of recyclable nutrients, both farm animal and urban. The route to sustainability requires an attempt to mirror the natural system, while maximizing the production of food to reduce the amount of land required. In nature, no tillage of soil is practiced. Farmers have shown clearly that food can be produced without doing tillage. No-till farming has advanced slowly over the last 50 years. Advances in herbicides over that period have been helpful in that advance. While all sectors of agriculture have contributed to the advance, government has not been strong enough in supporting the education about and adoption of notill. Preserving agricultural

soils for the future should be a primary focus of government. Alas, it is not. ‘Organic’ has become a buzzword for sustainability. While some practices used in organic farming are beneficial, some are not. Too much tillage in organic farming is destructive for soil life and leads to too much erosion. No-till farming employs some of the practices of organic without the negatives. As history shows, over 10,000 years, tillage will lead to excessive soil loss. The availability of large tractors and intensive tillage equipment gives farmers the ability to destroy farmland at a much greater rate than in other periods in history. A further result of the large tillage and harvesting equipment is relatively new to the problem of soil degradation. The resulting larger axel loads cause compaction which reduces yield and reduces water infiltration, increasing soil erosion. Farm equipment companies are in the business of selling iron. Large farm equipment will not be part of the long-term solution.

While no-till does normally require herbicides for weed control, the combination of them plus the practices of long crop rotations and cover crops including legumes will almost eliminate erosion. The inclusion of animal protein production means the recycling of nutrients — manure — which, along with forage legumes, will greatly reduce the requirements for commercial fertilizer. These practices will greatly reduce weed pressures and make the long-term use of herbicides effective. History has shown that sustainable agriculture is not a one-trick pony but requires a co-ordinated societal effort. This article is part of a four-part series written by longtime local farmer Eric Kaiser. Eric, with his son Max, farms 1,300 acres southwest of Napanee on Hay Bay. They are egg and pullet producers who grow the grain to feed the livestock. They make the feed for the livestock with their own on farm feed mill. They recycle the manure from the poultry to fertilize the crops.

Garden gratitude For years, gardens have been both a hobby and a wonderful friend. I’ve loved my garden for it gives me vegetables so much tastier than some of the cardboard ones available. But not his year. I was unhappy that my garden was going to grow up to weeds for I was hobbled with sciatica. But my friends intervened — that is the incredible story I’m passing on. Each of the seven appeared as if out of a blue sky to plant my garden. And this note is to remind everyone that in times of crisis, people you may hardly know show up to help. Last fall I didn’t have my garden rototilled because my lettuce still provided salad for our table — until the snow came. Lots of lettuce! Early this spring I dug up a few of the same lettuce to transplant later. With it out of the way at just the right time, Jim came with a load of horse manure. He piled it on the garden while all I could do was watch from a window. That was a great start, but five barrels of compost waited to be manhandled. Over this past year our

kitchen scraps with grass cuttings had been forming the best compost to feed the garden. Of course the little red worms helped. You see with my sciatica pain, I couldn’t lift my shoes let alone empty those barrels. Then Rhonda with her nephew Jagger came and not only dumped all the compost on my garden but spread it around. That included the pile of horse manure that was waiting for someone with a fork. My neighbour Frank must have been spying what was going on for, without a word from me, his tractor and tiller turned the garden into smooth mulch. Add to that, a couple of days later he brought his hoe and planted the seed potatoes that I had bought at Canadian Tire. Frank and I will both be disappointed if they produce tires and not potatoes. But what about the seed potatoes I’d saved from last year? And the seeds for carrots, beets, lima beans, snap beans, plus the lettuce I’d saved? So how do I get them planted along with the tomato plants Frank gave me when I can’t even walk

to the garden? Well, the Good Samaritan named Rhonda dug out my hoe and in one evening everything found its place in the garden. All I could do was call out my encouragement to her from the deck on our house. About that time Dave came along with about 50 leek plants. I appreciated the donation but I just had to leave them isolated in their container. The next day Brian parked his car in our yard and offered to help. This time with my cane in hand — that Frank had given me — I was able with my wife Doris to go down to the garden. How Brian ever got those leeks, more carrots and the parsnips planted I don’t know, for he had two instructors coaching him every minute. Did he find the directions contradictory? He never said. Then the weeds were threatening to win in their battle with the potatoes. Surprise! One day I noticed the rows of potatoes had been hoed clean of weeds. I wondered about a miracle because nobody owned up to it. Later I discovered another neighbour Dale had used

his little tiller and a hoe to clean up those potatoes. I had not known who it was because Doris and I were not at home. Still the corn, the cucumbers and the squash seed had not been put into the ground. Once again it was Rhonda who did that planting. She even planted the amaryllis, the ones I keep blooming from year to year. After it was all done she left me a map of the plantings in the garden. Maybe I should not have left the best to the last but you’ll understand my prejudice. My wife Doris hauled out the hose a number of times and watered the garden. That was so important for during a few warm days some seeds would have died. So what name does this garden take when seven people have had a part in it? Perhaps I’ll call it ‘The Garden of my Seven Friends’ or just plain ‘Miracle Garden.’ Thanks my seven gardeners! A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago July 11, 1966 ■ Local farmers were trying to cope with unusually dry weather gripping the region. So far, bean, pea and strawberry crops had been hardest hit by the ongoing drought, and it was expected to have a significant impact on grain yields later on in the growing season. While temperatures were consistently above normal, the region had experienced rain only once in the past three weeks. Cash crops weren’t the only thing being affected. Milk production was also down as pastures had passed their peak. Not all crops were in bad shape, however; tomatoes and potatoes were growing well. ■ A 16-year-old Deseronto youth was awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to theft and other charges in Belleville. The teen had stolen a car from the Belleville General Hospital parking lot. A short time later, a Tyendinaga Mohawk Terrority resident reported a car accident in front of his home. The youth was taken into custody by police and charged. Another Deseronto resident, a 19-year-old male, was also charged in connection with the incident.

30 Years Ago July 16, 1986 ■ A proposed rezoning to allow for a new eight-unit apartment building on the south side of Newburgh Road near the intersection with Camden Road was rejected by Napanee council. The zoning change, from ‘Development’ to ‘Residential R3’ was opposed by three neighbouring landowners. One of those objectors was Clare Hannah, the owner of Trentway-Wagar Tours and Charter Buses. He said he already got frequent complaints about his buses coming and going at all hours, and that he didn’t need even more complaints from more residents. ■ A 72-year-old resident of Lorne Smart Villa was rescued from drowning in the Napanee River thanks to some quick-acting neighbours. The man had been fishing when he stumbled into the water. He had drifted to about 15 feet from shore when a couple of his fellow Smart Villa residents retrieved him. At one point during the crisis, his heart had stopped and he was not breathing. They performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

There will be more than just fast boats to check out at the annual powerboat races in Erinsville this Saturday and Sunday. A crafterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s market on Saturday and a classic car show on Sunday will also be part of the Ron Collins Memorial Powerboat Races, which will take place on Beaver Lake off the shores of Lionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Park. The event is part of the Ontario Powerboat Racing Series. Both Doug Overbury, race organizer, and Tanya Mezaros, owner of the nearby Lakeview Tavern, say the event has been steadily growing in popularity over last few years, in part due to the addition of new events such as the crafterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fair and the car show. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We keep adding more things every year, too,â&#x20AC;? said Mezaros. She said that race announcers, an addition last year, help those on the shore keep track of the action on the water. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was really helpful for the spectators to know what was going on. They were really good, they did a great job,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Boats travelling as fast as 140 kilometres per hour will be participating in the weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s races. Overbury said that the event is popular among racers, too â&#x20AC;&#x201D; about 60 competitors are expected to take part in the weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s races. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve added a few more classes over the years, and the races themselves are getting more support because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a really good, fun location to come to. The Lakeview Tavern is nearby, which is great,â&#x20AC;? he said. A variety of classes of boat will run the course on the weekend. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some of the top classes run well (at speeds) over 140 kilometres per hour,â&#x20AC;? said Overbury. Not all local residents have been fans of the event;

in the past some Beaver Lake cottagers petitioned Stone Mills council to disallow the races, principally because of the noise generated by the boats. Despite these concerns, council has consistently voted to permit the races; it also enjoys the support of the Land Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Lakes Tourist Association. Overbury said that the race organizer work to try to accommodate other recreational boaters on the lake during the race times. The races are free to watch, and will run on both Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Stone Mills Township lifted a moratorium on installation of new communications towers in the township — but that doesn’t mean they’re rolling out the welcome mat. At its regular meeting in Centreville Monday night, council voted to rescind its nearly three-year-old moratorium, on the basis that the township had no jurisdiction over whether or not a tower could be sited in the municipality, and to give the township and its residents the ability to provide input into tower siting. The motion passed 6-1 on a recorded vote, with councillor Martha Embury casting the sole dissenting vote. The issue re-emerged earlier this year when SBA Canada contacted the township to advise them that they were applying to erect a communications tower near the village of Enterprise, close to the intersection of County Road 6 and County Road 14; at that time, the township advised the company that a moratorium on such towers were in place. Since then, however, the company has been given the green light to proceed with its application by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada — despite the fact the municipality had a moratorium on such towers in place. In a staff report to council by Deputy Clerk Roger

Hogan, he also noted that the township has no legal grounds on which it can “constrain or otherwise prohibit development of communication towers through a moratorium.” Before council discussed the issue, Mitch Wilson, a resident living near the proposed tower, blasted council for entertaining the notion of removing the moratorium. He cited health concerns relating to exposure to communications towers, and errors and shortcomings related to the company’s public consultation program to date. “The (company’s notification) sign was originally posted in an open field. By Day 2, the sign was broken in two and moved to the actual location it was supposed to be put up in… The sign was never repaired and it was very difficult to see, because it was hidden by trees,” he told council. He also noted that his house and the house of his neighbour were left off a site map of the proposed tower, “which is very misleading, especially when they took the time to include my drive shed, my barn and my chicken coop.” Later, he said, “I’m here because I’m reading that there are health risks to these things, that I might be within 400 metres (of the tower)… I’ve got two grandchildren living in my home — six and four months old. That’s where I’m coming from. That’s where my concerns lie.” While Wilson got some sympathy from council mem-

bers regarding his concerns, they said that, because communications towers are a federal responsibility, municipal governments can’t stop them from being erected. “I understand the concerns, and I’ve been concerned myself, from the health standpoint. A lot of the information I’ve been reading has been disturbing. Other countries have bigger setbacks than Canada does. (The ministry) is relying on very old information to come up with their Safety Code 6 guidelines,” said Deputy Reeve John Wise. “I understand (Wilson’s appeal to council) is driven by real concern and passionate concern for his family, and I respect that,” he continued. “I would suggest that concern and anger is somewhat misdirected. This is a federal matter. I’m not trying to dodge any municipal responsibility here. The simple fact is, we are powerless in this regard.” Calling the moratorium a “bluff,” Wise said that it may have made some companies think twice about setting up shop, but now it was actually working against the interests of residents because it prevents the township from providing any input into the process. “By getting rid of the moratorium, it at least gives us some minor leverage to negotiate with them when they come,” he said. Wise also suggested that council — and concerned residents — should directly engage local MP Mike Bossio, since he’s the area’s federal representative, to push the federal government to “update their safety and health guidelines, and bring

them more into line with other countries in the world that are taking some of these concerns seriously.” Wise’s comments were echoed by other council members. Others noted that the issues relating to the site plan and the communications program should be relayed to the company by the township. “I think we should raise that question, that the mapping, the diagram, is inaccurate. Even though we don’t have any real power, we have the right to raise a concern, and the concern is, the information (they are) presenting isn’t accurate,” said councillor Doug Davison. “I’d like to see the process slowed down a bit,” said Embury before voting against the motion. “I’m not willing to lift the moratorium at this point. It will give us the opportunity to ask the proponent to come forward and talk to the public, and answer the questions that people have.” Later in the meeting, council also passed a resolution to draft a bylaw calling on communications tower proponents to be required to hold some form of public meeting as part of their community consultation process. “I think there is a misconception possibly out there that because we lifted the moratorium that we’re welcoming these cell towers, and that’s not really what we’re doing,” said councillor Wenda Lalande. “We just want to open the dialogue so that any small input we can have with these companies will bring us to that table.”

L&A SOS takes adult day program on the road

Deb added that the farm, located on County Road 9, is open for family or group visits by appointment, free of charge. Davis-Fingland said the program regularly welcomes

‘pet therapy’ visitors, from dogs to baby chickens. The new ‘Can-Lit’ ‘CanLit’ doesn’t fit into a neat little box. It is diverse, it spans all sorts of topics and genres and it can take you anywhere in the world. While at one point the term may have been specific to literary-fiction funded by government grants and set in smalltown Canada, it increasing seems to be Coles’ applied to the work of any Canadian writer, regardless of a novel’s content, setting or perspective. In my opinion, this is as it should be. If you want proof of the diversity of the “new” CanLit, consider the following anticipated releases. Three Years with the Rat by Jay Hosking is a difficult book to describe — it defies genre classification. The novel follows a man, down on his luck, trying to find his sister who has gone missing. Grace was a promising researcher in psychophysics, brilliant but becoming increasingly unhinged. One day she goes missing, followed by her boyfriend shortly thereafter, and the only clue to where they went is a giant box made of wood and mirrors alongside a note that reads: this is the only way back for us. This book definitely requires the reader to let go of assumptions and literary conventions. The strong Toronto setting is a bonus and helps ground the story in reality, which I think made it more palatable for me. If you are interested in reading something unusual, it’s worth a try. It will be released in August. The Choices We Make by Karma Brown is women’s fiction at its best. It follows two best friends: Kate, the mother to two happy and healthy girls, and Hannah, who has struggled with her fertility for six devastating years. After witnessing the heartbreak of Hannah and her husband, Kate decides to sacrifice her body to their cause. Not only does she offer to be the couple’s surrogate, she’ll use her own eggs. As is standard in surrogacy arrangements, lawyers are hired to draft agreements in case a conflict of interest arises. Neither couple believes they will actually need legal intervention… until they do. The author, based outside of Toronto, explains in the foreward of the book that she had her baby with the help of a surrogate — her sister. Her personal story clearly shines through her characters, their highs and lows, personal struggles and complicated relationships. If you are ready to hop on an emotional rollercoaster, read this book when

it is released this month. The Parcel by IndoCanadian writer Anosh Irani tells the story of Madhu, a transgender prostitute turned beggar belonging to a close group of hirjas (eunuchs) in Bombay/Mumbai’s red-light district. India is the only c o u n t r y where the tradition of eunuchs is Notes prevalent today. In fact, there are about one million of them. Many are beggars but it is also customary in the country to have hijras bless childbirths, weddings, and other auspicious occasions. It was a very interesting slice of life to read about. Madhu, as a young boy, rejected his male-ness and was in turn rejected by his family — this is how she ended up a hirja in a brothel. While Madhu is sympathetic character at face value, there is also a dark side to her. The parcel referenced in the title of this book is actually young Nepalese girl, sold by her family into slavery — and it is Madhu’s job to break the child of her will before delivering her to the buyer. The Parcel is no doubt an uncomfortable read. The prose, in particular, is gritty and dry-humoured to the point of being off-putting. However, it provides a unique perspective and, if you can believe it, it ultimately says something positive about the human spirit. The Parcel has a release date set for early September. Probably the most traditionally CanLit of the bunch is Five Roses by Alice Zorn. It is the story of three women living in Montreal whose stories are connected but the reader only finds out how as the book progresses. This is a great choice for character-driven readers who appreciate a well-developed setting. The

city’s historic Pointe StCharles, a slightly downtrodden neighbourhood in the process of gentrification, is as much a character in this book as Fara, Maddy or Rose. I love reading the descriptions of the food and culture of the area, as well as of the renovation of one of the character’s newly purchased historical home with a dark past. Five Roses will be released this month.

LINDA CHONG ‘PAYS IT FORWARD’ COMMEMORATES MOTHER AND FATHER WITH $15,000 ENDOWMENT Now residing in Battersea, Linda Chong was born and raised in Napanee. She enjoys recalling pleasant child and teen years as a Brownie, a Girl Guide and a member of Grace United Church’s junior and senior choirs. "I had a good life growing up, not extravagant, but we had what we needed. After graduation from a fouryear commercial program at Napanee District Secondary School in 1966, Linda wanted to be a secretary. With no secretarial jobs being offered in the Napanee area, she set out for Toronto on the advice of a friend. “My dad gave me his holiday pay - enough to keep me for one week in Toronto where I hoped to find a job. He had faith in me and I’ve never forgotten that”. Before that week was out, Linda was home again, triumphant. Successful on her third interview, she had landed a position with the provincial public welfare office, today’s Ministry of Community and Social Services. “I was always my dad’s little girl and very happy to tell him what his holiday pay gift had helped me to do”. While living and working in Toronto, Linda met Gene, a Community and Social Services colleague and soon-to-be husband. Both Linda and Gene were transferred to Kingston in 1982. Linda joined OHIP’s personnel arm and there served the remainder of her career. Both Linda and Gene retired in 1997. They often camped the south shore of Hay Bay where bass and pike ran aplenty. “Gene loved to fish and was very good at it”, says Linda. “I enjoyed it too, but Gene took the sport seriously and developed himself into a bass specialist”. Two years after retiring, Gene was diagnosed with Alzheimers and went into long term care at The John M. Parrott Centre which brought Linda back to Napanee. He passed on November 11, 2015, right around 11 a.m. A significant month, day and hour in history, raising thoughts about the ending of the Great War of 1914-18. Linda’s father, Napanee native, Harry Thompson, grew up sharing home time and space with three brothers and three sisters. He devoted his working life to enterprises owned and operated by local businessman, Byron Perry. Starting off delivering coal for Mr. Perry, he later moved over to Perry’s Shell Station then located between the Gibbard Furniture Shop and the Napanee Beaver office in downtown Napanee. Heart problems eventually forced his retirement. A devoted husband and father and well known about the Napanee area, Mr. Thompson lived his entire life in his home town and passed in 1996. Linda’s mother, June, was also born and reared in the Napanee area and a lifetime resident. For two years during World War 2, she worked at the Gibbard furniture shop making ammunition boxes. When Linda and her brother, Terry, were full grown, Mrs. Thompson returned to Gibbard’s

where she put in another 20 years before retiring in l990. Linda’s mother died in April, 2015. “Mom and dad didn’t have a lot of money to share around, but they were caring, outgoing, took a genuine interest in people and did things for others in many ways. They were great parents. We enjoyed a close relationship, did a lot of things together and they gave me a solid start in life. My mother and father’s example of caring about those in need and being an involved part of their community has been a lifelong inspiration. I feel it right to remember them with the fund now arranged in their name with the Napanee District Community Foundation. I’ve donated financially to the food bank for some time, but it was only after Gene passed that I learned about the Foundation through Tim Reynolds. Tim is my financial advisor and also happens to be the Foundation’s Vice President. Until Tim mentioned it, I didn’t know that the Napanee District Community Foundation existed. I was fascinated to learn about creating an invested endowment fund to commemorate my mother and father. The fund’s investment earnings will go to help provide grants and scholarships throughout Lennox and Addington County. Being a perpetual interest-generating fund, it will build and go on contributing to help people and community organizations far into the future. I’m especially interested in my fund providing education scholarships and bursaries for kids and I know that my mother and father would like and appreciate that kind of remembrance. There have to be people who can help out financially in addition to giving time and other resources. Nobody succeeds all by themselves. We all get helped along our way. My dad’s gift of his vacation pay changed my life. I’ve never forgotten that and have grown in the belief of ‘paying it forward’. I also believe that those in a position to do it - should. When I encounter or hear about people in need of a hand up, I think to myself - “There, but for the grace of God, goes me”.

the community garden has been producing food since 2012. However, it has had a few homes over the years. After calling the former Deseronto Lions Hall property home for a couple of years, it was transplanted to the Friendly Manor Nursing Home on the eastern edge of town. This spring, it moved again to its current location in Napanee. Rayer said she contacted her son, George, who allowed the garden to set up shop on his garage’s property on Belleville Road. “He got the beds set up near his driveway, filled it with triple mix and got the water hose and tap outside,” she said. She said he continues to donate water to help keep the garden moist and productive; Shirley says he has also watered the garden himself when volunteers were unavailable. Rayer says she expects the garden will move again. As such, they’re looking for donations to help pay for new earth and a new water hose for the new location. She says they’re also looking for more volunteers. Without donations or more volunteers, she fears the garden could cease to operate. “If I don’t get any donations, I will have to say goodbye,” she said. “I can’t keep going with only five volunteers.” Those interested in lending a helping hand can call Rayer at 613-396-1015.

Gail McGlade, the manager of the Deseronto Food Bank, says the produce generated by the community garden is regularly distributed to needy families in Deseronto. Right now, there are about 50 families that regularly visit the food bank to supplement their weekly food supply. “We think it’s great because people that are on limited income need fresh food as much as anyone else,” said McGlade, who was visiting the garden this past Monday. “We are proud that we do push healthy food. We give it out, and we talk about it.” According to the garden’s co-ordinator Shirley Rayer,

Novice Express girls set to host qualifier July 22-24 Top-four finish is the goal BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

ith home-field advantage in their corner, the Napanee Doyle’s Windows Novice Express girls will look to make some noise when they host the U14 PWSA Qualifiers, July 22-24 at the Napanee Fairgrounds. The Express are part of an 11-team field that will be vying for a top four finish that would place them in the ‘A’ division at the Grand Championships in Mississauga the following weekend. “We’ve got a really strong team,” said Express coach Scott Morrow. “The goal is to qualify as an ‘A’ team this year. We’ll be disappointed if that doesn’t happen.” Qualifying won’t be easy, however, as several tough teams are expected to take part in the double-knockout tournament. Morrow says he expects stiff competition from Vaughan, Brampton Gold and Kingston, but says any team is capable of getting on a roll that weekend. Cobourg, Aurora, Brampton Burgundy, Peterborough, Sydenham, a second Vaughan entry and Richmond Hill round out the bracket. Representing the home team Express will be Rachel

Owners Dwight and Michelle Williams built the site specially to host events of this calibre and will be busy upgrading the lake as they prepare to host the world. The site is known for it’s calm lake conditions, which are ideal for the sport. “It’s right in the Williams’ backyard,”

Moynes says of Dream Lake, which is located at 1632 County Rd. 11 in Napanee. “They’re generous enough to keep inviting us back to have this tournament. We get some good conditions for skiing there. We’ve had a lot of positive comments from people that have come up from the States and even people from Canada that have been competing for a long time. It’s been a really popular site.” Moynes says this year’s event in August will be a perfect opportunity for people to check out the sport in advance of the major event in 2018. The Aug. 5-7 weekend event will be free to the

public. “The skiers love having a crowd,” said Moynes. “Two years ago we had over 400 people there for nationals. As a skier myself it’s pretty cool to come to the dock after you pass and see a whole bunch of people standing there watching the water.” Skiing is expected to take place throughout the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The event in August will also serve as a launching pad for the 2018 Worlds, with officials from the sport on hand to formally announce Napanee as the host site.

As a whole they’ve played 40 games this summer and have lost just six. Because of a lack of competition in this area, they’re forced to play their league games in the North York Women’s Softball League, where they call Baltimore their home diamond. Despite playing up a division, they’re 8-0 in that league and are undefeated when playing against boys teams. They’ve also played their share of games against the opponents they will see at the qualifier, holding their own against some of the toughest teams in the province. “We play a lot of games on the road,” said Morrow. “We’re definitely looking forward to (playing in Napanee on July 22-24).” They’ll be hoping for a

At that tournament they will play for the right to represent Ontario at the U14 Jamboree in Winnipeg, Manitoba Aug. 17-21.

Feb. 22, 1943 in Galt, ON July 7, 2016 in Edmonton, AB In 1970 Chuck graduated from McMaster University with a BA in Economics. In 1970 he married the love of his life Suzzanne Kustra. They moved to Napanee area in 1971. Their first born son, Dave, was born in 1971 and then their second son Scott, in 1975. Chuck worked as a school teacher for many years. He enjoyed activities like canoeing, cross-county skiing, curling, biking, gardening, listening to Big Band music and telling jokes. In 2001 he retired and began to travel the world with Sue, as well as spend winters in Texas with friends. In 2014, they moved to Gibbons, AB. Chuck is survived by his wife Sue, sons Dave (Lynnette), Scott (Shannon) and 4 grandchildren; Hailey, Alex, Zander and Zoey. In lieu of flowers donations to the University of Alberta Hospital Neuroscience Unit would be greatly appreciated.
