July has been a bumper month for a trio of Lennox and Addington athletes as two golfers and one rugby player have made international headlines. On the rugby pitch, Napanee’s Britt Benn helped Canada’s women’s rugby 7s team to a gold medal finish at the Pan Am games in Toronto. Canada went undefeated at the tournament to win the first-ever gold rugby 7s gold medal in the history of the Pan Am games. They defeated the U.S. 55-7 Sunday night in front of the largest crowd ever gathered to watch a 7s game on Canadian soil, estimated at 18,000. Being part of the gold-medal-winning Pan Am team could prove to be a huge boost to Benn’s goal of representing Canada at the 2016 Olympic games in Brazil. South of the border a pair of local golfers, Napanee’s Josh Whalen and Bath’s Austin James, qualified for the USGA Amateur. The event, which will be held Aug. 17 at Olympia Fields in Illinois, is considered the top amateur event on the U.S. circuit. It draws some of the world’s top amateur golfers and boasts one of the most competitive fields. The USGA event will be just one of the many major events the local golfers pencil into their schedule over the next couple of months. All three athletes are graduates of NDSS. For more on these athletes, see the Sports section on page 18.

Liberal hopeful opens Napanee campaign office Mike Bossio ‘overwhelmed’ by local support BY SETH DUCHENE Editor
Surrounded by several members of the party faithful and supporters, HastingsLennox and Addington federal Liberal candidate Mike Bossio opened his election headquarters in Napanee on Friday. Bossio — who as head of the Concerned Citizens Committee of Tyendinaga and Environs has been a key player in the ongoing Richmond Landfill fight — said he felt “blessed” by the support he has received so far.
“I am overwhelmed by the support of the volunteers, the people who have put together this office in such a short period of time, and did such a remarkable job,” he told the Beaver. The Liberal office is located at the corner of Bridge and Centre Street. Bossio said the party also has a satellite office in Madoc, and may open another in Bancroft. Bossio said he’s been pleased by what he says he’s heard from constituents since he began hitting the hustings. “I am just overwhelmed by the support

that I’m getting at the door,” he said. “We’ve knocked on thousands of doors, the No. 1 message we’re getting from people is, we’ve got to get rid of (Conservative Prime Minister Stephen) Harper. We can’t survive another four years with Harper, we won’t even recognize this country if we go through another four years. That is really the overwhelming message that we’re receiving from people out there, all over the riding.” He says he’s not concerned about recent polls, which have shown the Liberals and their leader, Justin Trudeau, dropping in popularity. Still more than three months out from the federal election, Bossio says it might be better that the media are now scrutinizing the NDP and Thomas Mulcair, who are enjoying a bump in the polls. “To be honest, I’m happy about (the polls),” he said. “We rode so high for so long, I thought, we can’t do this. You’re going to peak and then you’re toast, too close to the election.” Continuing, he said, “Now, all of a sudden the spotlight is on Mulcair, and all of sudden you start to see what his platform actually represents, how hollow it is and how unrealistic it is. He’s going to abolish the senate?

Why lead people down a garden path?” A top-down, “autocratic” style-of leadership is something that both Harper and Mulcair share, Bossio said. “I got into this because Harper is heading in the wrong direction, because Harper is an autocratic leader. from the same cloth.” As for the office opening in Napanee, Bossio says its central location should provide a real boost for his upcoming campaign. “It means everything,” he said of the office opening. “It’s next to home. I’ve fought for this community for 17 years by fighting that dump, and I’m glad I did it. A long time ago I had to make a decision — I can run my business and make a lot of money doing it, or I can do what I’m passionate
about, and I’m passionate about my community, and Napanee I include in that.” Bossio says that other rural communities have a lot to learn from Napanee, adding that he’s been impressed by the town’s ability to prosper, where other small towns have faltered. “We have got to do something to rebuild our rural communities. Napanee is a guiding light as to what is possible and what can happen,” he said.

Council pledges to push ahead with tax discussion BY SETH DUCHENE Editor
More discussion on urban and rural taxation will continue among council and staff in August, which should determine a timeline for resolving the issue. Greater Napanee staff is meeting this week to discuss key points for council to discuss in August, as well as compile information from the June 29 public meeting. Council held a special session of council on Tuesday afternoon and will not be meeting again until Aug. 18. Mayor Gord Schermerhorn said council and staff should jump back into discussion on urban and rural taxation at that time. “We get back to business more in August. I don’t want to see our public meetings and our tax review policy, if that’s what you want to call it, swept under the table. We’re soon going to have to make some decisions on whether we’re hiring a consultant, how we’re going to do it, the tax policy situation, maybe start a committee up of urban and rural, whatever it may be,” Schermerhorn said during Tuesday’s meeting. Greater Napanee Chief Administrative Officer Ray Callery said staff had
already planned to meet after Tuesday’s council meeting to debrief from June’s public meeting and prepare a report for the August council meeting. “Senior management will be meeting later this week to review both the process and put together a report for council so there’s something on the agenda as a report to try to move forward. (It’s) not to determine any policy but just to put some options before council at the next meeting for council’s discussion purposes,” said Callery. Isbester agreed that the conversation should be brought back up again in August and suggested a new timeline be made at that time. “We can’t let it stall. When you look at these comments and the comments that have been made in every Q&A, obviously we’ve gotten to a point where at least we’re listening to each other now and it’s time to be moving forward, not be looking backwards. The information is there, we have to gather more cost of service study, which seems to be a resounding request from everyone,” said Isbester. Some of her comments echoed concerns brought to council by way of letter after

June’s public meeting. Council received two letters from the public, which were included in Tuesday’s agenda package, one from Susan and Bill Phillips who own a cottage in Greater Napanee, and another from homeowner Charlie Milne. “There is a great desire to resolve this increasingly awkward taxation issue. History brought us to this point, fighting yesterday’s battle takes us nowhere and risks intensifying the growing division in the community. Looking forward to assessing whether there might be a more equitable and fair system where people can understand the rationale appears to have much appeal to (those at June’s public meeting),” Milne wrote. “Rather than being concerned about the potential cost of a cost of services study, the concern should more correctly be whether Greater Napanee can afford the cost of not doing a thorough and exhaustive study. Greater Napanee is enjoying some refreshing growth and is on the cusp of enter-
ing into a new level of magnitude as a municipality and as such the cost of entering ‘a new league’ are higher,” Milne’s letter continued. “I think council is ready to move forward and it should,” Ward 3 Councillor
Roger Cole agreed, thanking Milne and the Phillips for their follow-up letters. Ward 5 Councillor Shaune Lucas said now that the public has had the opportunity to share their concerns, council should sit down and have a lengthy
discussion on taxation. “It will be important for council among themselves to discuss what they know, what they don’t know, what their positions are. I think that there are three components here: staff, public and council,” said Lucas.

New museum of fraternal lodges opens in Napanee BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
A new museum has opened in town which will show the history of the fraternal lodges in Canada and how they have affected growth in Canada. Although the Canadian Museum of Fraternal Lodges opened its doors on Canada Day, there’s still much more work to be done. The goal is to expand it — as well as its collection of artifacts and items — to include three levels by Canada Day in 2017. The museum is located at the Masonic Temple in Napanee at the corner of Bridge Street and Belleville Road. “By getting a history of these lodges you get a history of Canada and its growth,” said John Schaeffer, president of the Canadian Museum of Fraternal Lodges, who has also been a Mason for 45 years. Schaeffer also founded the museum. “People would come here to populate here because those that would form a lodge, wherever they came from, would get their brothers and their families to come and join them because
most of them would set up businesses here,” Schaeffer said. The Masonic Temple’s first floor is filled with uniforms and identifies the four major fraternities: Masons, Orange Order, Oddfellows and the Knights of Columbus. The second floor will provide a detailed timeline of each organization as well as when and how it established roots in Canada. The timeline will also show the populations of each lodge and the population of Canada for comparison. The third floor will become an electronic library which can be used to look up heritage and local research. “We want to introduce the four major fraternities that were instrumental in growing Canada to what it is today,” Schaeffer said. “The next thing we want to do is we want to focus on the famous members that were instrumental in growing Canada.” Some famous Masons Schaeffer noted were John Meyers, who started a lumber mill in Belleville and brought a number of fraternal members to the area; and Sir John A. Macdonald. “Sir John A Macdonald,

We want to talk about these people.
These walls will slowly fill up with famous people in political, scientific, health care, it just goes on and on,” he added. The museum has been three years in the works and will be another two years before the three-level museum will be finalized.
Schaeffer noted that fraternal lodges have often been considered ‘secret organizations’; however, this museum seeks to explain all the workings of the lodges and how they have affected Canadian growth. “The major secrets they have are the contributions

made by their members, to the growth of Canada through the creation of industries, commerce and charities to the benefit of all Canadians. Their accomplishments in helping to develop our nation from the beginning need to be told as Canada approaches its 150th birthday in 2017,” Schaeffer explained. Tours of where the Masonic meetings are held will be available during museum hours and the room will always be open for the public viewing. “Visitors to the Lodge Room will be accompanied by lodge members, who can explain the significance of the room’s furnishings and fittings. On the ground floor, exhibits display ceremonial dress, regalia and documents, relating to Masonic, Orange, Oddfellows, and Knights of Columbus lodges and their related families,” Schaeffer added. The Canadian Museum of Fraternal Lodges is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays to Saturdays, and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is by donation. Napanee-area athletes amaze O, the Toronto Blue Jays are floundering at the all-star break, there’s no hockey on television anymore — we’re in the depths of the sports doldrums, right? Well, for Napanee and area residents at least, it shouldn’t be. This weekend, Napanee’s Britt Benn helped guide the Canadian national women’s rugby 7s team to a gold medal at the Pan American Games that are happening right now in Toronto. It’s just the latest accolade that Benn has collected, having already made an impact on the national and international rugby scene — and it’s probably safe to assume that there will be more to accolades come. With rugby 7s — a modification of the traditional rugby — now a part of the Olympic Games, it’s not surprising to hear that Benn is looking to win at an even higher level with the maple leaf on her jersey. And, she says she’s well aware of the Napanee fans who’ll be cheering her on. That wasn’t the only big sports news for Napanee over the past week, however. Young golfers Austin James and Josh Whalen, both local products who are now swinging the clubs in U.S. collegiate play for Charleston Southern and Kent State respectively, have qualified to compete in the U.S. Amateur Championship. That tournament takes place between Aug. 1723 at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois. How significant is that tournament? Well, legends Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods both won the event multiple times before they embarked on their professional careers, so it’s nothing to sneeze at. The fact that both of these golfers come from the same community is remarkable — and that’s not even mentioning Austin’s older sister Augusta, who’s enjoying success on the women’s professional tour. And while these athletes are making international news, Softball Napanee teams continue to excel. Two weekends ago, two Napanee junior teams qualified for the Canadian Fastpitch Championships (which, as it happens, will take place in Napanee from Aug. 10-16). They were just among the latest Softball Napanee teams to qualify for national tournaments recently, including the peewee boys, the bantam boys. Nothing to cheer about this summer? We don’t think so. And the best part is, summer has hardly even started.

Almost time to ‘fill the bus’ While the children in our community are enjoying their summer vacation and not giving much thought to the upcoming school year, parents must start thinking and planning for their children’s return to the classroom. This will include a shopping trip or two for all the necessary supplies needed. For some families in this community, however, this can be a stressful time merely thinking of how they can provide the items their children will require to start their school year off on the right foot. Free and easy way to learn a language T HERE are many reasons and benefits to learning a foreign language. It may improve academic skills, aid in brain development, and slow aging. It could also help you achieve some career goals (there is an urgent requirement for qualified speakers of languages other than English in areas of science, technology, medicine and global commerce). It could definitely help you in your plans to travel the world. For example, the Impact of Second Language Education Study’ commissioned by Alberta Education found people with a second language can adapt better to varying cultural contexts. So not only can having a second language help you increase your capacity to communicate, but also your cultural sensitivity. So, why not start this lifeenhancing project this summer? It’s a good time no matter what your goal is. If you’re
thinking of traveling abroad in the near or distant future, you might as well start now to be ready. There is also no better time than to improve your academic and/or c a r e e r prospects. If you’re an Coles’ older adult, you need to keep your brain fit — it’ll give you something to do and provide the pleasure of learning. Fortunately for us all, the library provides free firstclass language learning resources. They come in various formats but most noteworthy is our subscription to Mango Languages. An online tool that gives you access to lessons in 60-plus languages, this database provides audio tutorials to practice reading, listening, and speaking. Easy to use audio clips and written text combine to take you through each course. The lessons offer a carefully con-
structed sequence of lessons, using native speakers and everyday conversations. Unlike a lot of languagelearning software, the focus is on learning the “natural way”: considering slang, “natural” senNotes tence structure and “natural” pronunciation in all lessons so that you can learn to understand and replicate the native way of engaging in conversation. Also available through Mango Languages are a collection of English as a Second Language courses, catering to and spoken in various world languages found among Canada’s immigrant community. The best thing about Mango Languages is that it is free using your County of L&A Libraries card (compare that to the hundreds you’ll spend on Rosetta Stone). Your

smartphone, tablet or computer all make great platforms for Mango Languages. You can download the app to your tablet or smartphone from the app store or android market and sign in with your library credentials (library card number and PIN). You can also use the program with any computer by accessing it through our website at www.countylibrary.ca (click on ‘Online Databases’ and then ‘Mango Languages’). You’ll need a library card to create a profile, which you can use to track your progress. It’s easy to access the database (although not necessarily easy to learn the new language!) but be sure to give us a call or sign up for a ‘tech talk’ if you need any assistance. OMA prez talks rural doc recruitment to wardens On June 26 I had the opportunity to meet with the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus to outline how the provincial government’s imposed changes to doctors and medical services are impacting patient care. I wish the presentation wasn’t necessary, but it is important municipal leaders understand how the changes could impact the family physician recruitment efforts they have undertaken to attract doctors to their communities. At a time when there are more than 800,000 Ontarians still without a family doctor and 140,000 new residents are being added into our health care system every year, the government is restricting the ability of fami-
ly doctors to join team-based models of practice — the model in which new doctors are currently trained. Doctors may only join teams in communities the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care have identified on a list as areas of high physician need. A number of communities in Eastern Ontario are on the list: Port Hope, Prescott, and Pembroke, for example. The problem is many people mistakenly believe if their community is on the list it will make attracting doctors easier. With the province cutting from 40 to 20 the number of physician who can join these models, it will not be easier to attract doctors to your community.
There are nearly 200 communities across the province on the list so South Dundas and Smith Falls are competing with these other communities — places like Kitchener and parts of Toronto — for much-needed family doctors. The reality is there is a need for family doctors in communities across the province, whether they are on the list or not. Placing restrictions on doctors is not how we are going to attract new family doctors to care for the hundreds of thousands of people who don’t have one Everyone in Ontario deserves that their health care be a priority. n Bon Echo Provincial Park on Mazinaw Lake in northern Lennox and Addington officially opened with a special ceremony on this date. Canadian authors Merrill Denison and his wife, long connected to what would become Bon Echo park, were guests of honour for the opening. They donated the key property of the park to the Province of Ontario, and a special plaque was unveiled during the ceremonies in recognition of their contribution. A. Kelso Roberts, Ontario’s Minister of Lands and Forests, was on hand to open the new provincial park The new park featured about 400 campsites for the use of campers. n A farm labourer was killed when he became pinned between a truck and a farm wagon. The man was at Kingston General Hospital for four days before he eventually succumbed to his injuries. Apparently, the truck rolled backward pinning the elderly man between the two vehicles at a farm at R.R.1 Napanee.

n Deseronto council was cracking down on noise in town. At a meeting of council, a noise bylaw was passed — and none too soon, according to Mayor John Neal. “I can be sitting at home in the evening and be driven right up the wall by the noise,” he said. Most of the noise concerns surrounded barking dogs making noise deep into the night, as well as stereos blaring from various residences. The new bylaw prohibited persistent dog barking, operation of a motor vehicle in such a way as to squeal the tires, the operation of a combustion engine that isn’t muffled, and loud stereos. n Restoration work was about to begin at the Colebrook Dam, said Napanee Region Conservation Authority General Manager Peter Gill. James Auld, the Minister of Natural Resources, announced that provincial funding would be made available for the project. The province would pay for 85 per cent of the cost of the work to be done, with the remaining 15 per cent being picked up by the NRCA. Of the NRCA’s portion, Camden East Township would pick up 90 per cent of the cost.

He hopes the rest of the construction process goes smoothly so no changes are made to the layout and design of the building. “We’re hoping to avoid any change orders. more entertainment than most any wildlife that you can attract to your yard. They are territorial and as a result, they spar with one another for available food sources. If you hang a hummingbird feeder early in the spring you will sooner or later find yourself laughing at their antics as they compete for perch space on it. If you feed hummingbirds it is important to keep the feeder clean by rinsing it out with some mild soapy water each time you refill it or once every week. This prevents disease from spreading. You can mix up your own food or buy it. I prefer the liquid concentrated food as it is easy to mix and works like a charm. Habitat. Different pollinators need different environments to live and breed. All wildlife needs water. Consider a shallow tray or saucer of fresh water in the feeding areas of your garden for honey bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. As for specific ‘habitat’: Bees. Honey bees need a hive and a bee keeper. I recommend that you read the
book ‘Bees Make the Best Pets’ by Jack Mingo for details. Native bees are a different matter. I provide pieces of lumber, at least 12 cm thick and drilled with 3/8 holes to attract mason bees to my yard. Look for commercial mason bee houses at your local ‘birding’ retailer. With increased interest in the bee population there are several good ones to choose from, including two in the Mark’s Choice line up. Butterflies. Butterflies are grown up larvae and butterfly larvae eat plants before they pupate into adults. Think about this when you find a caterpillar eating your dill plants (it is likely a swallowtail youngster) or milkweed (monarch butterfly larvae). Don’t be in a hurry to pitch the baby butterfly out with the bath water. Instead, consider sharing your garden with them. Keep in mind that they generally do not do permanent damage to plants and they always mature within days or short weeks into adults that fly and collect nectar and
pollen from your flowering plants. There is more to biodiversity than pollinators, where your garden is concerned. If you have frogs living in a water feature you can be sure that you have created habitat and a balanced environment that is extraordinary. Frogs breathe through their skin and as a result they are very sensitive to changes in the environment. When water or air is polluted, the frog population declines quickly. The same can be said for toads. Both eat insects, including mosquitoes, and play an important role in the big life cycle of your garden. Ditto salamanders, newts and dragonflies. The more the better! Water. If you wish to get serious about the biodiversity in your yard you really must consider adding a permanent water feature. Think of the Serengeti Plain in Africa, where beasts chase and eat each other all day long in a constant competition to survive and thrive. Then, as the sun begins to set on the horizon,
they all meet at the watering hole for a drink. I imagine a quiet toast between the most fit and agile of the lot: ‘Here is to life!’ Gulp. Your yard is its own Serengeti, where all living things with legs and wings make their way to your pond or half barrel filled with fresh water each evening. In time you will benefit not only the pollinators and song birds: our best friends in the garden, but the quiet foot soldiers too. The centipedes, millipedes, mice, moles and voles all play a role in the ever changing coming and going, to-ing and fro-ing that goes on right under our noses every day. Fresh water, especially still water, is the most powerful elixir of life in your yard. Your entire community will benefit with the addition of it. Paper-making workship at Macpherson House BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
School might be out for the summer but there will still be plenty of learning going on at the Macpherson House over the next two months as they launch a series of hands on workshops aimed at ages 10 and up. Newburgh artist Wendy Cain will host the first workshop, which is ‘The Art of Papermaking’, held on July 28. It will introduce participants to the basic methods and equipment of papermaking, utilizing different materials to create different types of paper. It’ll

run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “My intention is to talk a little bit about the history of papermaking and where it started and where it got to wherever it’s ended up, said Cain. “I’m going to show them different samples of the different kinds of papers that can be made from the different kind of plant materials. Following her training, participants will be able to create more than two dozen sheets of different papers by the end of the day. “You can make papers that are very opaque and heavy and thick, said Cain. “Then you can also make papers that are translucent, you can hold them up to the light and see through them. There’s a whole range to the
kinds of things you can do with paper pulps. The only thing Cain says the students will need is footwear that is appropriate for wet conditions and to bring some kind of waterproof apron or garbage bag to protect clothing. Working with paper can lead to slippery conditions. Cain, who has 30 years experience with making paper, has hosted several workshops in the past and is a regular at Newburgh’s Art Among the Ruins. She says for the July 28 session participants should be at least 10 years of age because of the motor skills required to make the paper, as well as the fact that the session is five hours long. On the opposite end of the
spectrum she says she’s taught people well into their 70s and says its never too late to learn. Space will be limited to eight students and the cost is $35 per person. To reserve a space call the L&A County Museum and Archives at 613-354-3027. The summer workshop series will be held at the historic Macpherson House on the first and third Tuesdays of July and August. The other workshops will include making clay bird feeders on Aug. 4 and creating hand-crafted soap on Aug. 18. All workshops are $35 per person and limited to eight students. For more information on any of the workshops, visit MacphersonHouse.

Family court program gets permanent spot in Napanee BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
A free family court program supporting families separating due to domestic abuse is now a permanent fixture in Greater Napanee. After a three-year trial that started in 2012, which proved the services are
needed and well used in the community, the provinciallyfunded program is here to stay. “It is a program that is funded through the Ministry of the Attorney General,” said Dana Orr, Family Court Support Worker for Kingston and Napanee. “It was started by the ministry to help people who were
leaving abusive relationships in order to help them navigate the separation process.” During the time when one partner is leaving the relationship due to abuse, that is when the relationship becomes the most dangerous, Orr explained, which is why this program is necessary.
“This program was put in place to help people do safety planning if they’re still in the relationship and planning to leave and safety if they’ve already left and as the legal separation process goes on. I also link clients to other supports and services. I make referrals to how they can find housing, financial
support, counseling, all those things,” Orr explained. Orr also has legal training and is able to accompany clients to court. The Family Court Support Program offers a number of services. It provides information on the family court process, assistance in documenting
the history of abuse for family court proceedings, referrals to specialized services and supports in the community, safety planning, and more. For more information, visit www.k3c.org or call Orr at 614-549-7840 x3224. The Napanee office is located at 113 Richmond Blvd.

Avoiding common design pitfalls Summer is a time when you may be planning a renovation or designing your dream home. There is so much to consider as you are coming up with your room design, and looking around you for inspiration. It can be a very exciting process, but one that can easily get carried away with. Try to avoid these common mistakes as plan your space.
en victim to overuse, with some rooms ending up with floral wallpaper, floral cushions, floral everything — alongside peeling white furniture. When following a trend, and incorporating it in your design, make sure you tone it down and subtly integrate with carefully selected pieces and in certain places.
Mistake One: Overdoing a trend We are always overwhelmed by information telling us what the hot new trend in interior design is, whether it is ‘country cottage’ or ‘industrial chic’. While there is nothing wrong with incorporating a trend you’ve fallen in love with, it’s important not to take it too far. For instance, the country cottage chic is a popular trend, but has fall-
Mistake Two: Too Much Furniture Certain rooms are associated with certain furniture, but that doesn’t mean you absolutely have to include it in your room. Start with the essentials, see how much room you have left, and only then start to think about extras. As much as you love the look, or how often it is featured in design magazines, you may not be able to

Mistake Three: The Wrong Paint
Design Time
Like it or not, when you’re designing a room, it isn’t wise to simply choose the colour of paint you like the most. Paint can mean the difference between a room feeling welcoming and stylish, or cold and moody. If a room doesn’t have an abundance of light, using a dark or blue-toned paint will only make the room feel gloomier and colder. In rooms like this, it’s better to go with something like a pale green, neutral shades, or even something with a light rose tint.
mimic the exact look by each piece of furniture. You may still accomplish the design idea you’re looking for without having to include the chair or side table.
peaceful rather than cluttered and intrusive. When designing your space, think about how you can incorporate storage without it taking up extra space. Try wallmounted or recessed shelving, or even today there are so many pieces of furniture that have storage built in, such as coffee tables and chairs. These pieces are brilliantly designed to hide that storage is built in. Don’t be afraid to be adventurous, and move away from boxes and baskets.
Mistake Five: Trying to Mimic It is easy to fall in love with a room on a blog or magazine spread and try to emuMistake Four: late it as completely as possiForgetting about Storage One thing you should ble. Trying to create age keeps the atmosphere of a carbon copy will only end up a room feeling calm and in disappointment. The room
you fell in love with came from that person’s individual tastes and style. Your style should come fro you, showcasing your personality rather than just attractive design feature or trends. It’s always very tempting to cram as many pieces of hip furniture as possible, or run away with the next big interior design trend, but my advice is to take it slowly. After all, you don’t want to end up making any of these five common mistakes, and risk turning your dream room into a space you dread entering. Downtown Napanee
Always something to see Downtown Napanee
Although small-town life is often described as being a slower pace than in the big city, there’s still plenty going on in Downtown Napanee this summer. Whether it’s enjoying Napanee’s historic streetscape, attending a special event, embarking on a shopping trip, or some of all three, a ‘trip into town’ is always worthwhile. Although much has changed in Downtown Napanee since Sir John A. Macdonald used to walk its streets more than a century-and-ahalf ago, there’s still an undeniable historic ‘feel’. Part of the reason for this is the fact that as Napanee has undergone a downtown revitalization in recent years, storefront owners have made a point of enhancing their buildings’ historic features. Perhaps that sense of history is best embodied
by the Greater Napanee Town Hall, which has been a landmark building on Napanee’s Market Square since 1856. And, like it has for more than a century, the square is still used every other weekend for the Hometown Market. There, you can take in some entertainment and shop for locally-produced goods and crafts. Also in Napanee’s downtown core, you can find several historically significant buildings. Among them are the old Post Office Building, built in 1888, situated not far from the town hall at the corner of John and Bridge Street. Although it stopped serving local residents as a postal hub back in 1969, it continues to dominate the streetscape with its iconic clock tower. Another notable downtown building is
The Hometown Market, held every other Saturday in the shadow of the Greater Napanee Town Hall, features a wide variety of vendors. the Harshaw Block on Dundas Street between John Street and East Street, built around 1886. Its distinctive arched brickwork on the exterior is hardtop miss
— and you can still see the ‘IOOF’ on the above the centre window, dating back to when it was used as a meeting place by the Independent Order of Oddfellows.
The Gibbard Furniture Shops factory building at the end of Dundas Street West continues to be a focal point on Napanee’s main street, despite the
fact that the factory itself ceased production after 173 years in business in the late 2000s. Although the factory had been operating since 1835, the building had been added to and expanded several times over the decades. The building is currently in the process of being converted into condominiums, and the site will house a hydroelectric generator. A number of buildings in Napanee’s downtown have been affixed with plaques outlining their historical significance, including the Old Post Office, the Harshaw Block, the Grange and Grange Law Office at the corner of Bridge Street and John Street, the Royal-Richelieu Building on Dundas Street East and the Blewett Building on John Street.

Downtown Napanee Market Square as well as a number of other locations around the downtown. Just a few blocks away, too, is the Lennox and Addington Museum and Archives behind the L&A County Courthouse on Thomas Street. This summer, the museum is hosting a special exhibit, ‘Sir John A. Comes To Town’. The exhibit features a number of items dating back to the first
PM’s years in Napanee, including a streetscape of what Downtown Napanee looked like in the 1860s — complete with a wooden-plank sidewalk. Summer is definitely the best time to appreciate Napanee’s natural heritage as well. Only steps away from the main street is the paved Napanee Riverfront trail, from quiet Conservation Park to Springside
Park and its roaring waterfall. Along the trail are kiosks providing information regarding the Napanee River, as well its links to the development of the town itself. some shopping at a unique store or boutique, there are plenty of options available to Downtown Napanee visitors. Benn brings home rugby 7s Pan Am gold Hometown support buoys Napanee star
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
ritt Benn has heard Canada’s national anthem countless times before but nothing compares to the rendition she heard Sunday night following Canada’s women’s rugby seven team’s 55-7 win over the U.S. to claim Pan Am gold. Benn and her Team Canada teammates were serenaded with O Canada by some 18,000 fans at Toronto’s Exhibition Field following their win, capping a dominating 6-0 run. That crowd was the largest to ever watch a women’s seven match in Canada. “We were singing it and I just couldn’t help but have a smile from ear to ear on me,” Benn, a Napanee native, said of hearing the anthem during the medal ceremony. “Just looking out in front of the home crowd, 18,000 people singing along side with your teammates right beside you, you’re holding them and it was

just a super proud moment. I wish I could freeze time and go back to that moment because it goes by in the blink of an eye.” The Canadian women were a force to reckon with the entire weekend, shutting out Colombia, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina before beating the U.S. twice, once in the preliminary round 34-12 before winning big in the final. Canada did fall behind 7-0 early in the final game, marking the only time they trailed the entire weekend. They came right back to take a 26-7 lead at the half and continued to pour it on in the eventual 55-7 victory. “You don’t realize it’s happening until its actually happened,” Benn said of winning gold. “Once the final whistle blew and all the girls came running on the field, your arms are wide open because you’re so happy to share that moment with these girls you worked so hard with over the past months, years.” For the Canadians the win was a redemption of sorts, erasing the memory of a disappointing showing during a World Series event back in April, when they finished sixth on home soil in Langford, B.C. “Maybe not everyone

Josh Whalen, Austin James qualify for USGA Amateur Local golfers to play U.S.’s top am event BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
ocal amateur golfers Austin James and Josh Whalen will tee off stateside next month in the prestigious USGA Amateur, held at Olympia Fields in Illinois. The best friends qualified for the U.S.’s top amateur event at separate events, one day apart from one another. James, who hails from Bath, bested fellow Canadian Blair Hamilton by one stroke to claim medalist honours at Seven Oaks Golf
L
Club in Hamilton, NY on July 6. He shot one under 71 and three under 69 over 36 holes to earn an invite to the U.S. event. The following day, just a couple miles away at the Wayne Hills Country Club in Lyons, NY, Napanee’s Whalen earned his way into the USGA Amateur by grabbing the medalist position. He opened the tournament with a nine under, course record 63 in the morning and shot six under 30 over the back nine. He finished the tournament with a 63 and 74, putting him seven under. That was good enough for a three stroke victory and a perfect way to cap his 20th birthday. The USGA Amateur will get underway Aug. 17. In the meantime the duo will have a busy summer on tap. They are currently tak-
ing part in the Golf Association of Ontario’s Investor’s Group Men’s Amateur Championship which got underway yesterday at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club. The final round is set for Friday. The field features 156 golfers. After Tuesday’s round Whalen sat tied for 10th at one under 70 while James was tied for 14th, having shot an even 71. Results of their final three rounds weren’t known at presstime. Among their busy schedule, they’re also hoping to earn invites to the Great Waterway Classic, which will be held in their own backyard at the Loyalist Golf and Country Club, Aug. 24-30. Both were granted exemptions into the field last year, when it was also held at Loyalist.

History abounds in Lennox and Addington County BY ROB PLUMLEY
Special to the Beaver I’m not an expert in history by any stretch of the imagination. If you happen to run into my Grade 10 History teacher I’m sure he’d give you a blank stare if you mentioned my name. Let’s just say I was not a memorable student destined to be a great historian. What I do know about the subject, however, is that for those who are interested in learning about our local history, you won’t need to locate a ‘flying Delorean’ to do it. There are many museums and cultural centres that are overflowing with the rich history of Lennox and Addington County. From the Pioneer Museum and Archives in Cloyne to the Neilson Store and Cultural Centre on Amherst Island and everywhere in between, L&A County draws thousands of visitors every year who have a passion for history and who have traced their family’s roots back to this area. With my office being right next door to the County Museum and Archives in Napanee and the Allan Macpherson House & Park
just down the road, I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to see first-hand how the exhibits and staff assist in telling the unique story of Lennox and Addington to both residents and visitors alike. The Museum and Archives offers a variety of impressive themed exhibits, as well as a modern reading room that is ideal for genealogical research opportunities. The Macpherson House has been restored to showcase its nineteenth century character and is hosting many fun and educational events this summer. I recently took a scenic drive around the southern part of the county. The views are dominated by agricultural lands that have been farmed for generations, in many instances by the same family. Many villages and hamlets also dot the landscape that are proud of their history and are eager to share their stories. My first stop was at Old Hay Bay Church located on South Shore Road just north of Adolphustown. Erected in 1792, it is the oldest surviving Methodist building in Canada. The church, land, and its nearby cemetery were designated as a Nation-
ing insights into the history of the region. Bath and Adolphustown frequently host large-scale re-enactments that are attended by visitors from across the region. My final stop for the day was the Fairfield House in Amherstview. The 1793 home is considered eastern Ontario’s best preserved 18th century dwelling that is distinguished by the survival of many of its original interior features. It sits in Fairfield Park with its amazing view of Amherst Island and dozens of sailboats enjoying the winds of Lake Ontario. Throughout my tour, I was greeted by friendly and helpful staff members that really knew their local history. It felt as though I stepped back in time to experience Submitted the region as it was back in The Fairfield House in Amherstview is just one of the historic sites and attrac- the 18th and 19th centuries, and I didn’t need a ‘flux tions in L&A County. capacitor’ to do it. Napanee Express to host reunion game 2005 and ‘10 champions to reunite to promote upcoming Nationals
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Softball Napanee’s past and present will be on display at the Fairgrounds July 23 as they host a unique reunion/showcase game featuring gold medal winning teams alongside gold medal hopefuls. Starting at 7 p.m. a pair of past National champion teams will square off as the 2005 Midget Express take on the 2010 Junior Express. Members of the 2005 squad include six players who suited up for Team Ontario in Jordan MacDonald, Chris Lewis, Ben Tee, Nathan Moffat, Kyle Mack and Andrew Madden. Three of those players (MacDonald, Lewis and Tee), were also members of Team Canada. The 2010 squad included players like Chris Brown, Kyle Lloyd, Ryan Mills and Ian Wallwork. Following the reunion game Napanee’s two entries into the 2015 Nationals, which they will host in August, will square off in a league game. That game is scheduled to get underway

Chris Lewis was a shortstop of the 2005 National gold medal winning Express midgets. at 9 p.m. The showcase was the idea of Brent Mills, who was a member of the 2005 squad and current coach of the Shoeless Joes Junior Express. “The teams were for the most part pretty local so I’ve been able to contact just

about everyone,” said Mills. “There may be a few missing that I haven’t contacted but for the most part the guys are onboard for playing and even some of the out of town guys may make the trip down so it should make it really good.” Most of the players from

both teams continued to play past the age of 23 in the competitive Loughborough League. The 2005s formed the now folded Newburgh 86ers team while many of the 2010 players still play for Enterprise. The reunion game, which will have some fundraising events going on throughout the night for Softball Napanee, is aimed at building some excitement for the 2015 tournament. Next month will mark the first time Napanee has hosted the U21 Nationals since 2011. “I’m hoping there will be a good crowd for the first game and then people will stick around for the second game,” said Mills. “It will give the two teams that are going to Nationals a chance to play in front of a bit larger crowd than usual before doing so in August.” Preparations for the 2015 tournament, which will run Aug. 10-16, are well underway. A website for the event was launched earlier this week, which will provide updates on the competing teams as the event draws closer. It can be found at www.NapaneeU21.ca.
