Funeral arrangements have been made for a Loyalist Township Emergency Services firefighter who was killed in the line of duty last Saturday. Patrick Pidgeon of Loyalist Township Emergency Services died from injuries he sustained while fighting a fire in an apartment on Amherst Drive around 5:30 p.m. The 45-year-old leaves a wife and teenage son. Pidgeon is to receive a ‘full fire department honours funeral’ at 1 p.m. at the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre on Amherst Drive in Amherstview this Saturday. Loyalist Township Fire Chief Fred Stephenson said that Pidgeon “was a decorated and honoured Canadian Forces veteran who served in many overseas conflicts, including two tours in Afghanistan. Patrick’s service to the residents of Loyalist Township was his passion, calling and a true testament to his character.” Pidgeon’s death was the first fatality of a firefighter in the line of duty in Ontario since 2011. The Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office, the OPP and the coroner’s office were all investigating the incident. “The investigation concluded, I believe, on Monday evening, and that’s all that we know,” Loyalist Township Chief Administrative Officer Bob Maddocks told The Beaver yesterday.

New L&A Crown attorney sworn in

Lennox and Addington County’s new Crown attorney Monica M.C. Heine has plenty of on-the-job experience. Heine — who has worked in the role on an ‘acting’ basis since the retirement of previous Crown attorney Ed Bradley in 2014 — was officially appointed to the role of the
count’s top prosecutor with a ceremony held at the L&A County courthouse on Friday. With members of the judiciary, the legal community and friends and family in the gallery looking on, Heine was sworn in by Justice James McNamara, the regional senior justice for eastern Ontario for the Superior Court of Justice for Ontario. After swearing her in, Justice McNamara
remarked on the difficult task of working as a Crown attorney, which requires the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities. “Their role is to conduct prosecutions fairly and dispassionately on behalf of all members of the public, including the accused,” he said. “Monica, a quick review of your extensive professional history and truly impressive service to the community leaves little doubt that you will continue

the task of handling those layers of complexity in your important new role.” McNamara’s confidence was echoed by others, including Curt Flanagan, the Director of Crown Operations for the East Region of Ontario. Flanagan had worked closely with Heine in other capacities around eastern Ontario. “The Crown Attorney must make difficult prosecutorial decisions, decisions that often are not the most popular, but, simply put, the right thing to do,” he said. “I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve heard from parents and laywers about how she has turned a young person’s troubled life around based solely on how she chose to deal with that young person in the justice system,” he continued. “It is that compassion and good judgment that will and has served her well as a Crown attorney.” Bradley — who was not in attendance, but sent along some remarks — joked that Heine had been able to accomplish something he’d been unable to do after 25 years on the job: get

Communities in Bloom judges wrap up visit

Two judges from Ontario Communities in Bloom toured Greater Napanee last week — and even partway through their visit, they liked what they saw. Both Liz Klose of Niagara-On-The-Lake and Jane May of Southwest Middlesex spent Wednesday, Thursday and Friday visiting various parts of the town. When The Beaver spoke with them on Thursday, they were at about the halfway mark of the overall tour, having just inspected the Napanee waterfront area from Springside Park and Conservation Park. “Certainly, I’m very impressed with what the CIB committee has done and has planned to do. I think a lot of that has to do with the very dedicated group of volunteers, but also the engagement of the community,” said Klose. She said that support from the business community was particularly apparent. Kathy Medd, who cochairs the CIB committee with Pam McCracken, said that the judges were taken to a number of locations around the community, from the ‘Veggies in the Village’ project on Church Street to
the United Empire Loyalist Centre and Park in Adolphustown. “I think both Pam and I were really pleased with the judging. The judges were very impressed with our community. I think one of the things that really stood out for them was the level of support that they saw within the community,” she said. “We try to provide them with an opportunity to speak with people that would be able to give them a really good sense of what’s going on. In doing that, it really showed them the level of involvement amongst people in the community — the level of volunteerism and community engagement really impressed them.” Both Klose and May also noted the involvement of the municipality in the Communities in Bloom effort. “We actually had an opportunity to meet up with some of the councillors last night, and they get it,” said Klose. “They really have been supportive. They’re real ambassadors for the CIB project. You can see it in everything that we’ve looked at… there are so many avenues of collaboration and it’s certainly a model for other communities.” “Some communities have only volunteers in Communities in Bloom, and they have
very little municipal involvement. The support of the councillors and the deputymayor (Marg Isbester), that’s pretty unique to Napanee,” said May. “I’m amazed at the enthusiasm and dedication of the people involved, and I am grateful of the lucidity with which things have been explained to us, and the readiness to answer questions,” she added. For May, it was the work done along the waterfront that had impressed her the most, acknowledging that there was still much of the municipality left to see. “That’s something that very few communities are able to have, because they don’t have rivers, and then to have actually taken an interest and developed that and have it as a protected heritage site, I’m impressed with that,” she said. Klose was also pleased with the work done along the waterfront, as well as the planting containers dotting the town. Greater Napanee, along with other Ontario Communities in Bloom participants, will find out the results of the judging in September. Last year, the town achieved five blooms, the highest possible rating, and the group hopes to maintain that rating this year.

Picturing Our Community

From where we sit… It’s something of a national pastime for Canadians to look down their noses at how our American neighbours to the south conduct their politics. As far as pastimes go, it’s more than a little snobbish and smug, and it’s probably something we shouldn’t do. But sometimes, those Yanks just make it so hard not to. Without heaping too much praise on ourselves — we’ve got lots of problems, and our politics are far from perfect — we must be doing something right up here. In Canada, polarization exists, and things certainly can get nasty. But it’s a whole different kind of nasty in the U.S. right now. Our politicians aren’t without flaws, to be sure. At the same time, we’d be willing to bet that the vast majority of Canadians, regardless of political persuasion, would rather have Justin Trudeau or Stephen Harper rather than either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton leading their country. Indeed, when we look south of the border at Americans’ choice for president for the next four years, we do so with a mixture of revulsion and pity. Newly-confirmed Trump is a autocratic narcissist who, when not flatly insulting people or demonizing whole segments of the population, is trotting out simplistic slogans masked as solutions to extremely complex problems. Meanwhile, the presumed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton comes to the candidacy with enough ugly baggage from her time as Secretary of State (and earlier) that, up until a few weeks ago, we weren’t exactly sure if she’d be serving a jail term instead of running for the office of President of the United States. We don’t know about you, but Trudeau, Harper and Thomas Mulcair and their respective parties are all looking pretty good to us right now. Thing is, whatever choice those Americans make in November, it could have a dramatic impact on Canada. The economy, trade, defense and international affairs are all heavily influenced by the U.S. And, one gets the sense that the U.S. is at a crossroads — that the long-term future of that country could be decided in the next few months. Tragic violence, the symptom of long-standing frustrations and grievances, is boiling to the surface in ways few could have predicted. People are angry, and they’re scared. Not that we can do much about it, of course, but watch — and be more than a little thankful. As we’ve said, we’re not perfect, and we get a lot of things wrong, but we’re not on the same precipice the U.S. seems to be on at the moment. We aren’t suffering the same divisions and strife that are racking the U.S. That suggests to us we’re on a good course — and we have been for quite some time now. As we said before, we must be doing something right.

No-till farming: What is it? Why do it? By Eric Kaiser No-till farming is farming without doing tillage. No ploughing, no cultivating, no discing, no tillage. Just plant, spray for weeds and harvest. In natural areas such as woodlots, fence rows, marshes, etc., plants establish and grow without tillage. By using planting equipment designed to place seeds in the soil without extensive tillage, farmers can imitate nature. While it is true that herbicides are used to control weeds, it is also true that there is less environmental impact than that caused by a tillage dependant system. Not doing tillage leaves weed seeds on the surface, making them subject to predation by birds, insects and rodents, reducing future weed pressure. Newer herbicides are used at very low rates. They are all organic compounds — made up of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and sulphur — that break down in nature to their natural elements. Tillage systems — whether they are conventional or ‘organic’ — have a much larger impact on the environment. Tillage destroys much soil life, causing soils to be bacterial, not balanced with fungus. Not a natural situation. Large amounts of energy are used to do tillage. Large

Extra labour is required to operate the equipment increasing the cost of production. Since the introduction of mechanized equipment about 100 years ago, that equipment has gotten steadily larger, heavier and more powerful. Tractors are now available with more than 600 horsepower and weigh as much as 60,000 pounds. Tillage equipment has also gotten much heavier. Repeated trips across the soil doing tillage causes yield robbing compaction to a significant depth which can take many
years to eliminate. Tillage introduces oxygen into the soil, causing carbon to be released as carbon dioxide reducing the organic matter in the soil. Tillage also causes erosion in several ways. It moves soil, particularly down slopes. It leaves soil exposed. Wind can cause erosion even on flat fields. Raindrops impact bare soil, causing particles to be water-borne and move with surface water. It also breaks down surface soil particles allowing more soil to move with surface water. The break down of soil structure combined with compaction reduces water infiltration, further increasing run-off and erosion.

n Napanee Police Chief R.H. Benn said he might resign following the completion of an Ontario Police Commission investigation of the town force. The results of the study into the force had been given to town council, but had not yet been made public. Although the study was instigated to find savings in the police force, leaked contents from the study suggested there might be more expenses in store. The study recommended that five new officers be hired, and that the police station be expanded or moved to be bigger location. It also recommended more extensive police training for officers. n A flash fire on Sarah Street was being investigated by local police and fire officials, with possible criminal charges pending. Sgt. G.L. Langton confirmed that an investigation into the fire, which happened the previous Sunday, was taking place, but added, “the whole thing may be dropped.” The lone female resident of the home narrowly escaped death when the fire swept through the interior of the home. It had been the second fire in the home over the past two days. A police guard was placed at the scene.

n Two men charged after the robbery of the Tamworth CIBC bank almost one year earlier were to be tried by judge and jury in October. Two Toronto men, one 40 and one 38, were charged in connection with the robbery. They were also facing charges of forcible confinement and being unlawfully at large. Because of a publication ban on evidence heard in pre-trial hearings, further details into the incident couldn’t be printed. The bank’s manager and three employees were allegedly confined during the robbery, according to court information. n Napanee town council was poised to conduct a survey to see if senior citizens’ housing needs were being met. Council made the decision after receiving a letter from the Napanee Housing Corporation the previous month. Because of a significant waiting list for individuals looking to move into Lorne Smart Villa, the housing board determined that an investigation into building a new building in the not-too-distant future to meet those needs was necessary.

Dana Henry says that lunch pails and backpacks are most-wanted donations for the annual ‘Fill The Bus’ campaign.
The Lennox and Addington Poverty Reduction Committee is hoping local residents will help keep needy students properly equipped in time for the return to school in September. For the seventh year, the group is holding its ‘Fill the Bus’ campaign with the goal of supplying students with backpacks, lunch pails and other school supplies for when they head back to class. Dana Henry, committee member and Family Services Co-ordinator for the Napanee Salvation Army, says the campaign has been successful over the years, both in terms of donations collected and families assisted. “Last year, we assisted I think 167 kids for backpacks, and so that was good,” she reported. “We’re usually in the range of 165 and 175 (kids assisted). We do help throughout L&A County, so there will be people from Cloyne and Northbrook and Amherstview and Odessa (who use the program).” From Aug. 2-5, from 2-6 p.m. each day, a bus — on loan from Martin Bus Service — will be parked at Giant Tiger in Napanee where people can drop off donations.

Henry says that there will also be committee representatives there to answer any questions the public might have about the program. Besides backpacks, Henry says “we’re really looking for water bottles, lunch pails, scissors, math sets, those sorts of things — not necessarily the paper and pencils. We usually get an overabundance of that anyways. We’re really looking for the things that the school doesn’t supply.” If you ‘miss the bus’, there will also be a bin set up at Giant Tiger for off-hours donations. “They can go down to the Salvation Army and drop it off, or they can take it to the Napanee and Area Community Health Centre and drop it off there,” she added. She says that, besides getting the word out to potential donors, Henry says the committee is also hoping to get the word out to families which could sign up for the service. “The big thing right now is trying to get people to register, because we really want to make sure that we’re getting everybody that’s in need.” Parents must contact the Salvation Army at 613-3547622 by Aug. 5 to sign up for the program. Napanee Fair
New attractions, old favourites highlight 185th fair BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Even after all these years, there’s still plenty of magic in the air surrounding as the 185th Napanee Fair rolls into town July 29 to Aug. 1. That’s because among the new attractions this year is Kingston-based magician Rob Driscoll, who will take the stage for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. shows on Saturday and Sunday. He promises to bring an interactive show for all ages. A magic show is just the tip of the iceberg for this year’s fair, which returns with all the carnival staples. “We really have a full package of events,” said Napanee Fair president Carol McKinley. “Our entertainment for families includes the tractor pull, the demolition derby, the horse pull, those are all things people look forward to each year.” 4-H will once again have a heavy presence throughout the weekend, hosting horse, sheep, goat and cow shows. They’ll also be looking after a petting zoo. The ever-popular midway also returns, featuring rides for toddlers right up to thrill seekers looking to soar above the fairgrounds at high speeds. McKinley says the fair is also a chance for the community to showcase its unique talents as they host a wide variety of contests, including ones for photographers, home crafters, flower arrangers and vegetable
growers, among many others. “Being an exhibitor at the fair costs $8 and that gets you in all weekend and you might actually win some prize money,” said McKinley. “I encourage people to download our fair book and see what they can enter.” Last year they drew about 300 exhibitors and McKinley is hoping to push that number towards 400 for this year. “One of the big plusses of a small-town fair which is really ignored, especially today when people are glued to their television or computer screen, is walking through the fair grounds and seeing people you haven’t seen in ages,” said Barry Robinson, a fair board member. “I think that’s special and could be a draw.” The midway opens at 4 p.m. on July 29 with the tractor pull at 6 p.m. followed by a talent show in the palace at 7 p.m. On Saturday the midway opens at 11 a.m. and highlights include rare breed displays, mini king and queen and a performance by Johnny Burke and the Burnt River Band at 8:30 p.m. On Sunday there will be animal shows throughout the day, a petting zoo and bingo. On Monday is the ever popular demolition derby, which gets underway at 2 p.m. “(Greater Napanee Emergency Services) is going to do a car extraction demonstration before the derby,” said McKinley. “That’s new this year.”
The midway, always a popular part of the Napanee Fair, returns again this year. Along with showing their life saving tactics, the fire department will also be delivering an important message on the dangers of driving while texting. A complete listing of events is available at

Napanee refugee family issues new appeal Sister under threat in war-torn region

As great as life has been in Napanee for the Hosni family, safety concerns for relatives still stuck in Syria continues to weight heavy on their minds. The Syrian refugee family — made up of Majed, Razan and their children Mohammed, Mahmoud, Royaa and Aseel — have been living in Napanee since February and call it a “dream.” They say they’ve been treated well by the community and have been made to feel at home in just a few short months. But lately, their thoughts have been on Razan’s 22-year-old sister Hiba, who remains in the war torn area. They fear for Hiba, who is divorced and left with no contact with her two children and is facing deportation from the relatively safe country of Jordan back into the extremely dangerous Syria. “We’re trying to organize a group of people to assist in the sponsorship process (for Hiba),” said Dr. Jeff Sloan, who was a member of the Lennox and Addington Refugee Group Enthusiasts organization that helped bring the Hosni family to Canada. “It’s quite an involved process and it involves a lot of steps, a lot of forms need to be completed. We may need to do some fundraising.” Time is of the essences in their efforts on two fronts: one because the Canadian government has a deadline of Sept. 19 for all refugee applications, and two, there are many concerns as to the safety of the young Syrian.
For the time being, Hiba is living in Jordan with her brother, who is married to her ex-husband’s sister, which leads to some tension. Her ex-husband was physically abusive and won’t allow her to see her two children. “The fear is she’s going to be deported from Jordan because she’s living there illegally,” Majed said through a translator. “She can’t stay where she is. Now she’s on the verge of thinking about suicide. She’s at the point where she can’t stand it. She just wants out of there.” As the war continues to rage in Syria the violence spills over into the streets and innocent people live in constant fear of bombs going off in residential streets. Just this past Sunday, Majed was told that his halfbrother was shot and killed in the street. He continues to hold out hope that the news is just a rumour, but he fears the worst. “(Hiba) is 22-years-old, divorced with two children,” said Majed, adding that growing up Hiba always considered Razan as her own mother rather than an older sister. “She can’t see (her children). The physical abuse from her father-in-law and from her husband was to the extreme. She had no life and doesn’t think she should live, that there’s no purpose for her to exist.” Getting Hiba to Canada will be no small task. Though she already has a place to stay with the Hosni family, the Canadian government has already fulfilled it’s pledge to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada. Any other refugee would have to be privately
sponsored. Once a hot button issue, the war in Syria has faded from the radar from most people and the new group would face the challenge of re-engaging the public’s interest. “We’re looking for a group that will work as a cosponsor, like a church,” said Sloan. “We don’t have anything definite, but we’ve got a few irons in the fire. We’re looking for a group of people who will be committed to having regular meetings to work out the details of the sponsorship.” In particular they’re seeking volunteers with social work or finance skills as well as experience with refugee law. A meeting has been scheduled for July 27 at Trinity United Church at 7 p.m. for anyone interested in getting involved. Sloan says they can also contact him at 613-876-3569. The Hosni family does have one powerful ally in their corner in HastingsLennox and Addington Liberal MP Mike Bossio, who has already expressed his desire to assist the family. His photo is attached to a Canadian flag he gave the refugees, which hangs prominently in their living room. As they continue to hope for the best for their displaced family member, the Hosni family also carries on with their task of adapting to life in Canada. The two parents continue to learn English, attending classes four nights a week. The children recently completed their school year at Southview Public School and are quickly learning the language through immersion.

Writer inspired to publish book of poetry BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

For Jean Phillips Whiting, writing her collection of poems Fate’s Child: Poetic Justice, wasn’t just a matter of artistic expression — it was something she felt she had to do. Although Fate’s Child: Poetic Justice was written more than three decades ago over the course of about three years, and was printed in hard copy shortly after it was written, it’s now available online for download through amazon.ca.
Whiting, who now lives in Shannonville, said she wrote the poems while she was going through an intense spiritual experience. About 10 years later, she determined what she believes happened to her: a ‘kandalini rising’. The poetry reflects that intensity, and pulls no punches. “These things that were happening to me were inexplicable, and it was just as if I was being attacked,” she said. “I had no idea what it was. It was the most terrifying and the most exotic thing that a human can go through.” She admits that the experi-
ence not only difficult for her to understand, but for those around her to understand and accept, too. Ultimately, however, she says she was better for having gone through it. “The end of it, it was the most wonderful experience that there could be,” she said. When asked why she decided to publish the poems, she said, “I always thought, and still do think, ‘why me? What was all this for? What was its purpose. Why put me through it.’ I’m not in politics… what was it for? It wasn’t just to teach me a lesson. I thought that perhaps it’s supposed to be shared.”

Series of drug busts in Napanee, Belleville Beaver Staff
An investigation by the OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau-Drug Enforcement Unit, Belleville Police Service Drug Unit and Tyendinaga Police Service resulted in the execution of narcotics search warrants at an apartment located on Water Street in Napanee as well as in Belleville. Officers seized a small quantity of crystal methamphetamine, a digital scale, packaging materials and drug paraphernalia at the Water Street location. A 42-year-old female and
a 36-year-old male returned to the address and were arrested by officers. Police seized another digital scale, two cellular phones and $100 cash from the pair. Both have been charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a controlled substance and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. The man also faces three charges of breach of probation. The woman was released on a promise to appear Aug. 30. The man was held and was scheduled for a bail hear-

Things are looking up with vines

In addition to hardy kiwi (actinidia arguta), I recommend the following vines for use where you would not likely grow anything else: walls, dividers, fences, porch pillars, etc. Honeysuckle (lonicera). Not the once popular flowering shrub but the twining vine. Honeysuckle vine blooms for several weeks, though at its very best for about 10 days in late June and it is not as aggressive as my kiwi. The dense clusters of long, trumpet shaped flowers attract hummingbirds and smell sweet. A honeysuckle vine will enhance the appearance of any wall when grown on a trellis. It prefers the sun but will tolerate some shade, though mildew can become a problem in some shady circumstances. Hardy to zone 4. Hydrangea (hydrangea anomala). Again, not to be confused with the flowering shrub by the same name. Climbing hydrangea is one of my favourite permanent vines: it is slow to establish itself but after a couple of years in a well prepared
Clamatis hole it will take off and produce an abundance of the most gorgeous broad shaped umbels of creamy white flowers. This is a vine that prefers the north or east side of the house, out of the blazing sun. It will mature to about the height of a two story building in 7 to 9 years. A keeper. It is selfclinging so no trellis or support is needed, just a sturdy wall. Hardy to zone 5. Wisteria (wisteria sinensis). Chinese wisteria is the most common plant found at garden retailers as it is propagated from seed, which is fast and easy. Japanese wisteria is propagated from cuttings and is a little bit tricky to start. This is not your problem, I know, but it explains why the Chinese type is much less expensive and more widely available. Wisteria is a good option for a fast growing twining vine where late spring colour is desired. You have seen pictures of wisteria covering a pergola or

Someone reading this will want to yell at me for recommending this vine as it is considered a weed by many farmers who are forever pulling it out of hedgerows. However, it is native, fast growing, reliably insect and disease free and if you prune it aggressively you can train it to do most anything that you want. I have a one meter length of a maple branch in my shop that is twisted like a snake squeezed the life out of it. I quiz visitors to guess how this happened. The answer: a Virginia creeper strangled it while it was growing. Two tough plants battling it out in the garden. Hardy to zone 4. Clematis and climbing roses. I had to add an evergreen vine to my list. You read right. This perennial beauty holds its leaves over the winter, providing some off-season interest where most other vines retreat for up to 6 months. I really enjoy the red/creamy white fruit that hangs on this self clinging vine in the fall through early spring when some hungry migratory birds make a meal of them. The only problem that you may have with it is euonymus scale, which can be controlled nicely using dormant oil during the summer
months. It is a natural product that smothers the scale insects without harming the vine. The flowers are not worth writing about but the many virtues of Bigleaf Winter Creeper far outweigh its lack of colour. Hardy to zone 4. I have a 10-year-old kiwi vine at the front of my house that has strangled my downspout. This vine, known for producing the most delicious sweet, green fruit about the size of a large grape is quite aggressive. But I love it. Get cooking with an outdoor kitchen Today an outdoor kitchen is much more than just a barbecue and a cooler. Of course in the modern outdoor kitchen, the grill is still the central fixture, but the space has evolved into an extension of the home’s living space. The best outdoor kitchens are as functional as an indoor kitchen, as welcoming as a living room and as entertaining as a family room. An outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a grill, table and chairs or as elaborate as a fully outfitted kitchen complete with pizza ovens, wet bars, fireplaces, side burners, warming drawers and roasting spits. Designing a simple, straightforward outdoor kitchen can be set up by the homeowner, whereas a more elaborate kitchen could require the help from a designer. With so many different types of outdoor kitchens, designing the best kitchen for your family takes time to plan and may require permits from the city. Here are some tips to help you get started with your outdoor kitchen planning. What is the primary function of your outdoor kitchen? Do you plan on throwing dinner parties? Will it be an area to lounge,
eat and relax? Once you figure this out, you can choose your must haves for each area and which portion of your outdoor kitchen you want to focus on? Most outdoor kitchens are going to be situated near the main house. You don’t want to travel a long distance from the indoor kitchen to the outside, con-

You’ll also want to make sure that smoke from the grill doesn’t waft back into the home. So have a good idea of the general wind pattern in your yard and orient the grill appropriately. Thirdly, if you want to maintain the view you currently have from inside the house to the outside, you’ll want to place the outdoor kitchen to the side or at an angle so that the view isn’t blocked. You may also want to consider the overall traffic flow of your yard and the safety of your family. A hot, outdoor grill shouldn’t be located right
next to the area where children are playing. Just like an indoor kitchen, the outdoor kitchen is full of hazards so place it accordingly. When designing your outdoor kitchen, you will need to consider what size of appliances you need and how many. A homeowner may want to utilize several cooking and refrigeration appliances, and may have specific entertaining needs in mind. Consider how all of these appliances will fit within the design plan, how much room to allow for each, and how they will work with each other. Leave enough space on either side of the grill to accommodate platters and tools, and don’t place appliances together. The same working triangle used in the kitchen should be applied to the outdoor kitchen as well. Having various counter heights and work surfaces can allow for different functions within the outdoor kitchen. Traditional 36” high counters are perfect for standing pre work and cooking, 30” high surfaces are ideal for sitting and eating, and 42” high bar tables are great for standing or resting food and beverages. Combining all three heights into your outdoor kitchen design will really
allow this space to be both functional and flexible. When purchasing your appliances, make sure they will stand up to both rain and sun. Stainless steel or ceramic appliances work great for all weather conditions, are very durable, and require low maintenance. Depending on your projects designed sink use, remember an outdoor sink must be either hooked up to a yard hose or connected to the home’s water supply. Calling a plumber to connect your outdoor sink to a water supply is an easy way to let a pro handle the hard work. Some outdoor kitchens are also fitted with other appliances to make the outdoor kitchen feel custom. Be sure a licensed electrician installs your electrical connections so you can be assured your outdoor kitchen is up to code. Gas powered grills are a popular feature in the outdoor kitchen. If you want a plumber gas line for your gas grill, you’ll need to hire a licensed professional and most likely require a permit from the city. Just like in an indoor kitchen, you’ll need places to put items and plenty of storage. The difference is they must all be waterproof and durable to temperature changes. Countertops and cabinets are designed to pro-
vide space and keep away clutter. One option is to have stone and steel counters and cabinets; this provides a sleek and modern look that is both stylish and functional. Choosing easy to clean and waterproof counters and cabinets will be beneficial in the long run. Concrete counters are resilient, smooth and easy to maintain. Your outdoor kitchen serves as a place to enjoy cooking and eating food while entertaining family and guests. Make sure you incorporate features that really make this space the center of your summer. Chairs, tables and decorative objects can complete the look, as will specialty lighting. When it comes to furniture, choose durable pieces with comfortable outdoor cushions. Select the largest table you can for the space so you can use it as a buffet as well as a dining table. Chairs that stack can help save space when it comes time to winterize the patio. A small fountain or pond can also lend a relaxing ambiance to your outdoor kitchen. Some outdoor kitchens are being fitted with television sets, truly making the outdoor kitchen both the place to cook, eat, relax, and entertain. Weather can be a big issue when it comes to out-
door entertainment. Building a tall roof or pergola over your outdoor kitchen will allow you to enjoy cooking outdoors, even in the rain or extreme heat. Outdoor lighting will not only extend your time outside, it offers safety for walkways, staircases and grilling areas. It also adds some ambiance to the space. Summer is the time for backyard barbecues and grilling, a well designed outdoor kitchen should allow you to enjoy cooking outside beyond the summer months. Anyone that has remodeled or designed a kitchen knows that there are a lot of things to take into consideration. Making sure your space is functional for cooking, entertaining, and relaxing can become overwhelming very quickly. However, the process can be simplified by dividing and conquering: think about what you’ll be using it for the most, decide on a location, and determine the entertaining, living, and cooking spaces. he Napanee Express Casa Art squirt girls travelled to Mississauga to participate in the annual Mississauga North Baseball tournament recently, returning home as champions of the ‘B’ division. Facing stiff competition in the round robin from Chatham, Kitchener, Port Perry and Halton Hills, the girls finished with a 1-3 record. Despite their record, stellar pitching and timely hitting allowed the girls were able to battle in every game. They were able to hang with every one of their opponents and proved capable of matching up with some very tough teams from across Ontario. Friday night saw the team lose to Chatham 8-4 in Chatham’s final at bat. Saturday, the team faced Kitchener, the eventual silver medalists, where

they lost 11-6. A pitching duel ensued against Port Perry where the girls came up short in a 3-1 game. In the final game on Saturday, their bats came alive and defeated Halton 9-4. Based on their record from the round robin, the team was relegated to the ‘B’ side of the bracket. Their bats kept rolling in their first playoff game as they defeated Barrie 11-7 Sunday morning. In the ‘B’ championship game, the team had a rematch against Halton. In a nail biting back and forth affair, the Express came out on top 11-10 winning Gold. The girls look to keep the momentum going when they host one of three provincial qualifiers at the Napanee Fairgrounds Aug. 5-7 and on to provincials Aug. 19-21, which will take place in Brampton. Having played tough against some of the province’s top teams in Mississauga, the Express will look to use that experience coupled with home field advantage for a strong showing at the qualifier early next month.

Softball Napanee will host its second tournament of the year this weekend at the Fairgrounds as they welcome eleven novice teams to the double-knock out competition. The Napanee Novice Express will play as the home team, opening their weekend tomorrow night with a 6 p.m. game against Aurora. With a win they would advance to play Kingston on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. A loss means they will play at 11 a.m. in a must win game. n The Napanee Express U10 girls traveled to Port Perry on Sunday to play a double header against the Angels. In the first game the Express had the bats working, earning a 15-6 victory. Danielle Barker pitched for
the win. At the plate Kristen Sutton went 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs and 7 RBI including a grand slam in the first inning. Kayla Gendron also went 3-for-3 while Emma Hagerman went 2-for-2. Napanee didn’t skip a beat in the second game, winning 23-0 with Sutton and Jordyn Watson combining for a no-hitter. Sutton added another home run while Sienna Eberle went 2-for-3,Emily Liscumb and Briseis Hunter hit first inning home runs, Sarah Marshall went 2-for3, Watson went 3-for-3 with a home run, Keyana Whan had three hits and three RBI and Hannah Tulloch smashed a home run. The U10 Express will wrap up the regular season this evening at the Fairgrounds at 6:30 p.m. against the Express U10 Boys.

GLENN, Hope (nee Rowe-Hunter)
Born on March 20, 1927 in Cahir, County of Tipperary, Ireland. Passed away July 15, 2016 in Yarker, Ontario. Hope lived in London, England during WW11 where she met and married a Canadian soldier, Douglas Gilbert Glenn. She immigrated to Canada as a war bride and initially lived on Amherst Island where she adapted to farm life. After moving to Kingston, Hope worked in a number of interesting jobs which included working at the radio station CKLC. She was particularly proud of her administrative role in obstetrics and gynecology with Dr. James Lowe at Kingston General Hospital. After she and Doug retired they returned to country life in Lansdowne, ON, until his death in 1991. Hope enjoyed travelling to Algonquin Park particularly in the autumn. Her many hobbies included knitting, crocheting, painting and playing cards. She loved animals and had a unique ability to give them interesting names. She was an independent woman who enjoyed an intellectual challenge. Hope was predeceased by her beloved husband Doug (1991) and cherished grandson Dougie (2003). She is survived by her seven loving children, Jamie Glenn, Ron Glenn (Mary), Barb Glenn, Gail Lieberman (Av), Carol Lynch (Bryne), Kevin Glenn (Debbie) and Stephen Glenn (Gail), 10 grandchildren, Julie, Barb, Erin, Rebecca, Adam, Tyler, Katie, Susie, Thomas and Celia and by her 13 great-grandchildren. I dropped a nickel in the jukebox just to hear it play; I didn’t have a tune in mind; I didn’t wait to choose— But dropped a nickel in the slot, and played the jukebox blues… HEN Mother Maybelle Carter penned this song in the 1950s, these automatic music machines were at the height of their popularity with the western world’s common people — those who were who were often referred to as ‘just folks’.
