Touching tribute paid to fallen comrade Hundreds gather to mourn Loyalist Township firefighter Patrick Pidgeon BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

Karen Pidgeon said that her husband, Patrick, would have been “embarrassed” by the massive memorial service for him at the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre in Amherstview on Saturday, where a number of speakers paid tribute to the corrections officer, solider and firefighter.

“But I think, deep down, he would understand,” she told those in attendance. Hundreds of firefighters — some from as far away as Sudbury and Montreal — along with members of Correctional Service Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces, were in attendance at the memorial service for Patrick Pidgeon, 45, who was killed one week earlier while battling an apartment fire as a member of Loyalist Township Emer-

gency Services in Amherstview. He also leaves behind a son, Patrick Jr., 13. Those service officers marched en masse behind Pidgeon’s family from the nearby Amherstview fire station to the recreation centre; following the service, the officers lined both sides of Amherst Drive while the family and colour party made their way back to the station. gathered outside, Pidgeon’s colleagues paid tribute to a man known by friends and co-workers for his professionalism, compassion and humour. “From his first call to his last, he always wanted to help with anything he could,” said Captain Carl Jalbert, who worked with Pidgeon in the Kingston prison system and later with Loyalist Township Emergency Services.

“Patrick was always working at gaining more skills to help him become a better firefighter and a better person,” he continued. “He had a desire in him that I admired. That desire also forced myself and others to work harder. It’s not because I’m standing here that I’m saying this to you. It’s because it’s the truth.” “Pat was a humble guy, and to him, duty was duty. This attitude passed on into his corrections and fire safety careers. Pat was always in the lead when a fellow officer needed assistance,” said Matt Smith, who worked with Pidgeon at both Kingston Penitentiary and, most recently, at Millhaven Penitentiary. “I will remember my friend for the rest of my days as a loyal, brave, honourable and decent man, who always came to the assistance of others — a man from another era, when men always did the right thing and were willing to risk all for their friends and neighbours,” he said later. Warrant Officer Scott Duffy, who was a soldier alongside Pidgeon during one of his two tours of duty in Afghanistan, described him as someone who led an exemplary life, despite the fact that it was cut too short. “Pat as a solider was remarkable. being was truly exceptional. He positively impacted members of our team through his words and actions, and he positively impacted members of the community through his service, and he positively impacted upon me through stalwart character,” Duffy said. “By any measure, I think it would be safe to say that Pat led a life well lived,” he continued. Duffy recalled how Pidgeon rescued a puppy in Afghanistan, nursing it back to health; the dog, Thor, would stay at the camp, and later be brought back to Canada to live with another Canadian soldier in Trenton. Thor was at Saturday’s service, standing in the procession following the ceremony. Duffy described Pidgeon as being like a “duck” during those chaotic and stressful times in Afghanistan. “He may well have been paddling like crazy below the water line, but you’d never know it. He was calm on the surface, always with that crooked smile stoically set upon his face,” he said. He went on to say that Pidgeon’s life should serve as example to others. “Through his actions, Pat inspired all with whom he came in contact, figuratively planting trees, the shade of which he will never sit beneath. But others shall, and be better for it. Moving forward and in memory of Pat and his legacy of service, I would challenge each of you within your own spheres. Be the duck. Smile during hard times. Live with enthusiasm, hope, gratitude, love and intent. Be a light. Be of service. Show strength, compassion and kindness. Be rewarded through giving. Remember that relationships are everything. Plant your own forest and lead your own life well lived,” he said. “Patrick Pidgeon was a very humble and private man,” said Loyalist Township Mayor Bill Lowry after the service. “Through his life, no matter the mission that he chose — as a spouse, parent, military officer, correctional services officer, emergency responder and firefighter — he was committed to all of these with the same principles of dedication, passion and pride to serve and protect all. Patrick leaves a legacy that is second to none.” “Pride, passion and dedication: Firefighter Pidgeon was guided by these value in every endeavour. His path was one that gave him honour and pride,” said Loyalist Township Emergency Services Fire Chief Fred Stephenson.

PELA-CFDC helps get two businesses off ground BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

A brewery and a mobile clothing store are two things that wouldn’t immediately seem to have much in common — but in the case of the Napanee Beer Company and The Loft Girls fashion truck, there is at least one thing they share. Both ventures received the support of the Prince Edward-Lennox and Addington Community Futures Development Corporation and other local agencies for their start-up. As such, both held ribbon-cuttings last Wednesday on Milligan Lane in Napanee. The Loft Girls — owned by Niki Hodgskiss and Claire Bouvier — is a 90-square-foot mobile fashion store, situated on the back of a pink truck. The store features vintage finds, one-of-a-kind clothing and stylish accessories for women. “Napanee is perfect for us,” said Hodgskiss. “We love being able to be part of things here and in the surrounding area.” Bouvier said that the venture “would have never come to fruition” without the support of PELA CFDC. “We’re doing something that we love because of the help of you guys,” she said. The Loft Girls benefitted

from the Empowering Young Entrepreneurs program, an entrepreneurial training program funded by the Government of Ontario but delivered by PELA CFDC. Since 2014, the program has assisted 45 young entrepreneurs in L&A and Prince Edward counties. “When Niki and Claire came to us, when they enrolled in the EYE program, this notion of a ‘fashion truck’, I wasn’t sold on it the first time they told me about this,” admitted PELA CFDC Executive Director Craig Desjardins. “But what they did was they really went to town, took a look at the market, took a look at mechanism and the operation of how make this happen, and… the result is quite extraordinary.” “We’re involved in this business of assisting young entrepreneurs for a good reason. The primary reason is that we, as baby boomers, have run the show a long time, and it’s time to pass things over to the millennials,” said Hans Hogneger, a member of the PELA CFDC board. Local MP Mike Bossio heaped praise on the pair of young entrepreneurs. “They’re embracing the ‘ecodesign’ side of it. They’re embracing art, they’re embracing education, and they’re embracing entrepreneurship. This is just another example of the great things

that can happen in our rural areas. They are a fine example of that,” he said. “This is absolutely fantastic,” said Greater Napanee Deputy Mayor Marg Isbester. “By having PELA CFDC in our area, it just gives so many chances to young people.” Both Bossio and Isbester also credited L&A County Economic Development for assisting The Loft Girls and the Napanee Brewing Company along the way. “The work that you guys put in to identify and find these entrepreneurs when they need it, and then these entrepreneurs who are the creative link to generating economic growth in our community, it’s creating this amazing dynamic that we now have in the town of Napanee, it’s very cool. It doesn’t get any better,” said Bossio. “The transformation that has occurred in this town in the last six years, and you end up bringing Claire and Niki and Geordan (Saunders, owner of the Napanee Brewing Company) to our community, it doesn’t get any better. It’s the example of what I keep trying to push and promote at the federal level… there are many good things that are happening in rural areas, and we need to tap into that energy and that dynamic, because if we do, we create our future corpo-

Saunders, in starting up the Napanee Brewing Company, benefitted from a $25,000 grant through PELA CFDC and the Eastern Ontario Development Program. The grant was used to purchase an automated control panel and a canning machine. Like The Loft Girls, Saunders said the grant was a key part of the getting his business — which held its official grand opening on Saturday — off the ground. “If it weren’t for that, we might not be here today.

That support allowed us not just to buy a very fancy control panel — that’s the heart of the entire brewery — but more so just the overall support really meant the world,” he said. Saunders said that, before opening the brewery, he and his wife were living and working in Toronto. This new venture allowed them now to live and work in the place they love. “Napanee is my home. I grew up here. I love this community and I love being a part of it,” he said. “One of the things we’re trying to focus on is innovation within our food process-

ing sector and within our manufacturing sector, or even within our retail sector. If we can help them to innovate to better increase their productivity and their processes, then it creates that economic growth, that economic engine that we really need,” said Bossio. Honegger remarked on the fact that, with one of the Napanee Brewing Company’s upcoming beers, Saunders is using barley grown in Prince Edward County and malted in Belleville. “In a world of homogeneity and globalization, to think locally and to walk the walk is just fantastic,” he said.

LACGH DIABETES PROGRAM RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE

The Lennox & Addington County General Hospital Diabetes Education Program has been recognized by the Standards Recognition Review Committee of the Canadian Diabetes Association as successfully meeting all of the Standards for Diabetes Education in Canada. The review committee commended the LACGH education team for its efforts and achievements in providing superior diabetes education to their patients and the community. To attain Recognition status, a Diabetes Education centre must complete an external review through a self evaluation process demonstrating achievement of a minimum of 80% of the standards within each of the Outcome, Process and Structure categories. The LACGH centre has achieved the highest possible score of 100% of the standards in each category. The 10.6% rate of diabetes in our catchment area is noted to be higher than the national average and the age of the population served is greater than 45. These statistics provide a very compelling reason as to why the centre is such a valuable asset in this community.

The program team was commended for providing; Access to community services and flexible work hours which reflect a patient centred focus in care; Responsiveness to the needs of the client population served; Involvement in smoking cessation research and Collaborated team work.

The review team commented “As a centre of excellence, the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital Diabetes Education Program will serve as a role model and will seek every opportunity to continue to improve and advance services to meet the needs of the community.

The hospital congratulates the Diabetes Education Team; Krista Jacky, Chrystine Rickard-Schaly and Jill Kingston for this outstanding achievement.

The Macpherson House itself will provide the perfect backdrop for Single Thread Theatre’s production of Salt Water Moon. Two shows are scheduled, taking place on Aug. 17 and 18. is one of the most produced plays in Canadian theatre, Karry says the performance at the Macpherson House will be unlike any other. That’s because his company specializes in taking theatre outside of the theatre and adapting to performing outside the traditional setting. “The actors I have are great, I’ve worked with them before and they’ve worked together,” said Karry. “They love the script. One of the most enjoyable parts of a production like this is mak-

ing the play part of the house. Using the porch of the house, acknowledging the garden, the lawn and the river. This type of theatre works when it’s not imposed on the space, rather that you use the space. When it springs out of the space, that’s when the magic happens.” Naturally being a Maritime based story, performing it next to water adds a little something extra as the Napanee River can stand in for the Atlantic Ocean.

Tickets for the show are $15 and are available online at www.County Museum.ca or in person at the Lennox and Addington County Museum and Archives or the Macpherson House. The live performances is part of a busy summer at the centuries old house, which has different themed family events running every week throughout July and August. For more on the activities taking place at the museum visit www.CountyMuseum.ca.

Guests are encouraged to don their red and white and display signs of encouragement as they gather for an overhead group photo, which will be captured with the help of a ladder from Greater Napanee Emergency Services. The photo will then be sent to Benn to display at the Olympic Village and serve as a reminder that her home-

town is behind her. Benn will be representing Canada as part of the Women’s Rugby Sevens squad at the Olympic Games, which will run Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This will mark her first Olympics. Also representing Canada with local ties will be Leslie Thompson, who will be heading to her eighth

Olympic games as coxswain of the women’s eight rowing team. The Napanee native, who now lives in London, Ont., has five Olympic medals to her credit, including gold at the 1992 Barcelona games. She’s set to become just the second Canadian to appear in eight games, joining equestrian Ian Miller, who has taken part in a record 10 games.

Macpherson House’s gardens will serve as the backdrop for a live performance of Salt Water Moon, held Aug. 17 and 18 at the historic house. Produced by Single Thread Theatre Company, the performance features a cast of two acting out the classic Canadian play written by David French. Since it was first written in 1984, the play has earned several awards including the Canadian Authors Association Award for Drama, the Dora Moore Award for Best New Play and the Hollywood Critics’ Drama-Logue Award. “It’s set just after the First World War in Newfoundland,” said Liam Karry of Single Thread Theatre. “A young man comes back to town after he left and goes to the porch of his sweetheart, that he left suddenly, without saying why. They try to work things out.” The time frame plays a huge role in the play, as do some of the hardships that were facing Newfoundland during the late 1910s. With some humour mixed with tenderness, it tells the story of trying to come home after leaving and focuses on the dreams and fears of Jacob and Mary. Though Salt Water Moon

HE loss of our communities’ ‘heroes’ — police officers, firefighters and soldiers — are, thankfully, a relatively rare occurrence. We in this region were reminded this month, however, just how dangerous these occupations can be when we lost Loyalist Township firefighter Patrick Pidgeon, who died while battling a blaze in an Amherstview apartment building. That service was as profoundly impressive as it was profoundly sad. Hundreds of firefighters, soldiers and corrections officers — all decked out in their dress uniforms on one of the hottest days of the year — marched from the Amherstview fire station to the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre. Even by the time the sound of the bagpipes had disappeared into the arena, those officers were still marching in complete silence, save for the metronomic beat of polished boots on pavement. After the service, those same officers lined both sides of Amherst Drive, underneath a billowing Canada flag, from the rec centre all the way to the fire station, forming a corridor of respect through which Pidgeon’s family would pass. If the words of those who paid tribute to Pidgeon are any indication, he wouldn’t have ever considered himself to be a hero. Nevertheless, he got a hero’s goodbye. And, based on the remembrances offered by those who knew him, the ‘hero’ label was certainly deserved. But perhaps the best tribute paid to Pidgeon came from a fellow soldier, Warrant Officer Scott Duffy, with whom Pidgeon served during a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Pidgeon’s actions were, even long before the fire that ultimately took his life, indeed heroic — but what Duffy honed in on during his remarks were words to live by, regardless of whether or not you happen to wear a uniform. He said: “Through his actions, Pat inspired all with whom he came in contact, figuratively planting trees, the shade of which he will never sit beneath. But others shall, and be better for it. Moving forward and in memory of Pat and his legacy of service, I would challenge each of you within your own spheres… Smile during hard times. Live with enthusiasm, hope, gratitude, love and intent. Be a light. Be of service. Show strength, compassion and kindness. Be rewarded through giving. Remember that relationships are everything. Plant your own forest and lead your own life well lived.” There is no silver lining to the loss of a man in his prime, robbing a wife of a husband and a son of a father. In celebrating his life, however, we can recognize true heroism, and take away some lessons as well. That came through loud and clear this Saturday in Amherstview.

Letter to the Editor

Urban residents have added costs I have a daughter who has been accepted into a medical certification program in September. As it’s full time she will not be able to work, so in addition to $13,000 in tuition fees she needs around $15,000 in living expenses (by having a roommate and eating a lot of mac and cheese). I purchased a secondary school insurance that was paid for during her childhood but alas, the fine print states they will not pay for a one-year program, nor will they reimburse me my base money. According to the logic of the recent letter ‘Rural residents have added costs’ (Napanee Beaver, July 14) each of the 10,000 ‘rural’ residents should kick in $2.80 to help me out. That should be easy enough, it’s only the cost of a cup of coffee. The only costs that are relevant when discussing property taxes are those things that the property taxes actually pay for. So, yes, the discussion has covered sidewalks, street lights, the OPP, and ambu-

Visit

lance services. Property taxes do not cover water and sewer, so what any individual in Greater Napanee ‘rural’ or ‘urban’ pays is irrelevant. Property taxes do not pay for the Internet, gas, hydro nor propane or oil. Utility costs are irrelevant to a discussion on property taxes (unless one wishes to discuss whether the library should provide Internet services to the residents of Greater Napanee or the town should provide free Internet to the tourists who park their boats at the dock). House insurance is a personal matter, it’s irrelevant to the property tax discussion. Mail delivery is covered by Canada Post, a federal agency financed with federal taxes. Any complaints about Canada Post should be addressed at the federal level; a letter to our MP Mike Bossio would be one course of action, but not the town council and certainly not the ‘urban’ residents. Naturally the cost of pizza delivery, something provided by private busi-

nesses, has no part whatsoever in a property tax discussion. The rural residents in the North Bay area do not receive any snow plow services, no garbage pick up, and most certainly no blue/grey box collection. Rural residents must band together and hire a private company to provide those services, that’s on top of their property tax, which is not discounted. That is the true meaning of rural. If it takes longer for an ambulance or police car to get to a rural residence then it could be argued that a resident should be paying more property taxes, not receiving a 33 per cent discount. I’m not in fact asking anyone in Greater Napanee to donate to send my child for post-secondary education. My family is working out a solution for my daughter. I simply desire that the property taxes are equitable. And I think we all know at this point they are not. Dawn Andrews, Greater Napanee

‘Cover crops’ explained By Eric Kaiser Generally, cover crops are crops that are grown after, before or between commercial crops. There is some effort currently to grow cover crops in commercial crops under seeded after the crop has been established. What plants species are used depends on the reason or reasons they are grown. Probably the biggest reason is to create soil cover. The simple effects of soil cover are multiple. No. 1 is the reduction of erosion – both by wind and water. The erosive effect of the wind is diverted away from the soil surface by the presence of the plant material. As well, the root structure in the soil restricts the availability of soil particles to be moved by the wind. The presence of vegetation means that raindrops are either less likely or unlikely to directly impact the soil. When raindrops can strike soil directly, they cause the soil to become suspended in the water and then it can move down grades and be lost. The water will carry nutrients and cause pollution of water bodies such as streams,

rivers and lakes. Another big reason for cover crops being used is the benefit to soil life. There are more organisms — bacteria, viruses, fungi, insects, worms and other animals of many kinds — in a handful of healthy soil than there are people on earth. The micorhizzae — the area around plant roots — provide the connection between the roots and soil nutrients. Roots of different plants benefit different soil life species by providing different root exudates. Soil life benefits most from living plant roots. Using cover crops, particularly multispecies cover crops, extends the period when soil life can benefit. The multispecies cover crops will also benefit more species of soil life. The cover crop will also provide more food for the earth worms which are very beneficial to soil in a number of ways. Most species of soil life are beneficial. A healthy balance of soil life provided by no-till farming also will significantly reduce or eliminate the effect of non beneficial soil life. Soil life in no-till soils provide materials — chemi-

cals — which will create soil aggregates. These aggregates — clumps of soil particles — give soil structure. This structure allows the easy movement of roots to increase rooting area of plants. This increases the water, air and nutrients available. It allows the freer movement of water and air into and through the soil. It provides spaces to increase the water and air holding capacity of soils. Tillage destroys these aggregates. Water infiltration rates are reduced causing more runoff and erosion. Nutrients are carried away in the runoff as well causing pollution in water bodies. The passage of tillage equipment causes soil compaction which decreases pore spaces in the soil. This reduction causes more reduction of rainfall infiltration. Less rainfall soaking into the soil reduces the amount available for plant growth. The compaction will also make root penetration more difficult. Some cover crop species provide other benefits. The use of legumes such as clover, alfalfa and peas ‘fix’ nitrogen from the air and leave it in the soil. There it

is available for following grass crops like cereals — wheat, barley oats and corn. This is a practice that has been followed for thousands of years before the availability of nitrogen fertilizers. It is a practice still followed to a limited degree today. Other species such as canola and mustards are nematicides. They reduce harmful nematodes and are used in some vegetable crop production. This shows some of the many benefits of cover crops. Many of these are benefits that have been known for thousands of years. They are being rediscovered and used for their benefits in commercial crop production. This article is the third part of a four-part series written by longtime local farmer Eric Kaiser. Eric, with his son Max, farms 1,300 acres southwest of Napanee on Hay Bay. They are egg and pullet producers who grow the grain to feed the livestock. They make the feed for the livestock with their own on farm feed mill. They recycle the manure from the poultry to fertilize the crops.

Let’s go to prison! Through the centuries, prisons were literally and figuratively closed off institutions, filled with dark secrets and shrouded in mystery. Our modern media culture has opened the gates and, in the past few years especially, prison narratives are having a major pop culture moment. Maybe we are a society obsessed with justice or maybe we just crave the odd glimpse behind closed doors? One thing is certain: prison stories are being churned out across all mediums and the literary world is on board. In case you are not aware, the hit Netflix show Orange is the New Black is based on real person Piper Kerman’s memoir of the same title. If you are familiar with the show, I can say that the first season is somewhat comparable to Kerman’s real-life account of her time in prison, but otherwise it is hugely embellished. If you are curious to know what’s truth and what’s fiction, then you’ll have to read the book. Another book about life in a women’s prison is Fellside, a novel by M.R. Carey. Jess Moulson is a prisoner at Fellside, a notorious maximum security prison in the haunting Yorkshire Moors. She’s been incarcerated for a murder, after a fire she unwittingly set while on a heroin bender

kills her 10-year-old neighbour named Alex. Jess is devastated by this turn of events, a night she can hardly remember, and wants desperately to atone. She decides to go on a hunger strike and in her near-death state, the ghost of Alex visits her. Even if the supernatural aspect of this novel doesn’t appeal to you, it is also chock full of prison politics and legal drama. The Convict Lover, Coles’ released 20 years ago, remains a popular book to this day. The reason I mention it here is that, in partnership with the County Museum and Archives, we will be co-hosting author Merilyn Simonds on Sept. 20 at 7pm. The Convict Lover is an account of the relationship between a convict and a young woman inspired by letters Simonds found in her Kingston attic. This novel is a complex blend of documented correspondence from Kingston Penitentiary, a history of the leadership of the penitentiary service of the period and a fictional extrapolation of the letters she discovered. This is Not My Life by another Kingston writer, Diane Schoemperlen, also chronicles a romance between convict and civilian — her own. While volunteer-

ing at a soup kitchen, Schoemperlen met Shane, a prisoner on an escorted day pass from Frontenac Penitentiary. A sucker for bad romance, she falls in love with him and thus begins a roller-coaster relationship. Her memoir is brave, frustrating at times and, above all, compulsively readable. It will also give you a realistic look into the prison system in our own backyard. Notes Another book I read recently that isn’t about prison per se, but has a solid connection nonetheless, is Evicted by Matthew Desmond. It follows the author’s years living in Milwaukee’s inner city to better understand the issue of affordable housing and how the lack thereof both contributes to, and is a product of, poverty. Spoiler: they are intrinsically linked! Desmond is extremely balanced in his approach. He doesn’t demonize the landlords, he doesn’t vilify the tenants. Landlords deal with unpaid rent and trashed apartments, tenants deal with subpar facilities and rent so high it is basically extortion — it leads to a cycle of eviction that is nearly impossible to crawl out of. Those who can’t break the cycle are

Catherine Coles

pushed into worse and worse neighborhoods, where crime is rampant and the only way out for many is (you guessed it) prison. This is a fascinating read which demonstrates that all social ills are connected and how the American dream is an illusion for large segments of the population. On the subject of prison, I should note that the library will be holding a penitentiary literature exhibit from Sept. 1 to Dec. 15. With thanks to the W.D. Jordan Special Collections Library at Queen’s University, our Amherstview branch will showcase Personal Narratives from Prison, showcasing books about the life experienced in prison, and our Napanee branch will showcase The Canadian Penal Press, a selection of early newsletters or ‘joint-magazines’ from Kingston area prisons. If that isn’t enough prison culture, you can also check out the County Museum and Archives’ intriguing mug shot exhibit titled Arresting Images, which will run until Dec. 15. All titles mentioned here can be reserved from your branch of the County of L&A Libraries or online at www.countylibrary.ca. Catherine Coles is the Manager of Library Services for L&A County.

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago July 27, 1966

n A mid-afternoon dip in the Salmon River turned into tragedy near Tamworth. A 14-year-old girl drowned while swimming with her clothes on. The girl and her younger brother were driving cows to pasture with a farmer when they decided to go for a swim around lunchtime. Shortly before wading into the water, she suddenly dipped underneath the surface and didn’t come back up. She had been swimming in about seven feet of water at the time She was found a short time later, about 15 feet from where she was last seen. Efforts to revive her at the scene were unsuccessful. n Farmers were starting to feel the impact of a drought that had affected the region of the summer. Some farmers said that, regardless of whether or not the area got more rain, irreparable damage had been done to local crops. Pea yields were anticipated to be about one-third of a typical growing season. Sweet corn, tomatoes, beans and potato crops were also hard hit. Even milk production was taking a dip during the drought.

30 Years Ago July 30, 1986

n For the first time in four years, it appeared as if Lennox Generating Station was being readied to be brought back online. The $500 million facility had been constructed in 1976-77 but, after a few years of energy production, was mothballed in 1982. Ontario Hydro, however, was looking into the possibility of bringing the generating station out of mothballs. Mandy Martin, an assistant corporate relations officer with Ontario Hydro, said that the oil-fired plant’s resurrection is an option that was being studied at the crown corporation’s head office. She said that Ontario Hydro was examining the costing and logistics of firing up two of LGS’ four units. n Napanee’s Evangel Temple was in the process of opening a new youth drop-in centre. The church’s administration said it was hoping to give kids a more positive message and direction. The centre would feature table games, a snack counter, Christian contemporary music, and periodic visiting entertainment such as comedians, gospel bands and drama troupes.

Young Artist’s Work To Be Displayed On Fire Truck

Adam Prudhomme-Staff

One of Greater Napanee Emergency Services’ fire trucks was adorned with some new artwork last week courtesy of Selby Public School student Abigail Misevicius. She won an art contest held by the fire station and will have her work, which stresses the importance of working fire alarms, featured on the side of the truck for a year. (From left) GNES fire chief Kevin Donaldson, parents Chris and Tina, Abigail, her sister Ava, friend Nora Rickard, Sparky and fire fighters Rob Hanna and Randy Cook unveil the artwork.

Book highlights work of local mission abroad BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

After meeting Tom and Cheryl Martin, it’s not uncommon that people are inspired to support their ongoing mission project, Hoping Cope Through Hope. Westport’s Allen Sackman was no different — although he was also inspired to put pen to paper. Sackmann just recently published a new book, Following The Martins, detailing his interaction with the Tamworth couple, his involvement with HCTH, and his participation in one of HCTH’s mission trips to Peru. It also explores the world of charitable giving, and offers some information about the history and socio-economic environment in which the Martins work.

Sackmann first met the Martins about six or seven years ago. “They came to Westport and I heard one of their presentations,” he recalled. “I was intrigued by their approach to their mission project. They’re very laid back, very casual, and — this is what impressed me a lot — they don’t ask for money.” So, Sackmann decided to learn more about the Martins. By the time he travelled to Peru with HCTH, in fact, Sackmann was already well into his work on his book. “We decided, my wife and I, that we would go to Peru to observe what they were doing,” he said, adding that they spent a week with the Martins, then spent a week exploring on their own. Sackmann said he watched the Martins travel up and down hillsides and through slums, checking in on

families and children being supported by HCTH. “They were really getting into the lives of the individuals that they’re supporting,” he said. In supporting HCTH, children are sponsored by donors here in Canada. The Sackmanns, in fact, were supporting a Peruvian girl, and their trip there gave them a chance to actually meet her in the flesh. “Meeting her was an emotional experience, because we had been at armslength supporting her, and all of sudden here’s a live, breathing, lovely young woman, who was genuinely pleased to see us and we were delighted to see her. That was an emotional thing for us,” he said. Sackmann says there are a couple of takeaways he like readers to get from Following The Martins. “One is that the Martins are worthy of sup-

port, because they don’t support kids into grade school and then abandon them,” he said. “Once they’re involved with the Martins, if they apply themselves and are responsive, they will stick with them. As a consequence, there are 15 kids going into post-secondary education this year being supported by this mission. That, I think, is exceedingly impressive.” The other overarching message Sackmann says he wants readers to latch on to is broader in scope. “I have a hope and desire some readers will see an opportunity for themselves, in whatever way they want, to make the world a better place. That sounds pretty highfalutin, but, it’s a reality,” he said. The book signing takes place at Westport Presbyterian Church on Aug. 7, from 12:30-3 p.m.

Music By The River

Songwriters featured in next show BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

Local songwriters will be the focus for the next Music By The River show this Sunday at the Pavilion in Conservation Park in Napanee. The Songwriters’ Showcase takes place from 2-4 p.m., and is free to attend. “The idea here is, we like to try to promote, somewhere in the Music by the River series, original material, and not always cover tunes,” said Stephen Medd, an organizers of the series and also one of the three acts slated to perform this Sunday. Also taking the stage will be Ron and Tim Sheffield as well as Barry Lovegrove. “Barry is a fine songwriter… he’s got an extensive background from back when he was a band

member during the 1960s in England,” Medd said. “And, of course, Ron and Tim Sheffield are veteran songwriters around here, they’ve been performing for audiences around here for a very long time… I’m quite pleased to get them involved too.” Now in its 19th year, Music By The River is a subcommittee of the Greater Napanee Arts and Culture Committee. “Over the years, volunteers get burned out, and we have sort of a rejuvenation, especially with the support of the Town of Greater Napanee,” said Medd. Although the event is sometimes mistakenly dubbed ‘Music In the Park’, Medd says he and his fellow organizers are always quick to make the correction, and for good reason. “We feel the river is an important feature in Napanee, and just a

great place to celebrate that beautiful, natural wonder with art and music around it,” he said. Medd says his own songs will delve into the history of the river and the area. “I’ve got a couple of songs about local marine history, some pretty fascinating stories I’ve wrapped up in lyrics and melodies,” he said. “One song I’ll be performing is about the Lyman M. Davis schooner, which was actually the last working schooner on the Great Lakes, and also considered the fastest. I get

excited writing songs, and I can really dive into some of the history when I’m writing this stuff.” Two more shows are planned for this summer. On Aug. 7, country artist Jennifer Brant and her band, Mustang, will perform. Then, on Aug. 28, the Rideau River Band, with its ‘big band’ sound, is scheduled to take the stage. Another show took place earlier this month. “With four shows this summer, we have a good diversity of genres,” said Medd.

Designing interiors with bright colours Summer is all about the bright blue sky, magnificent sunsets and gorgeous flower gardens. Bringing those bright colours in our homes carries the summer forward. Many of us who love colour outside of our home, are reluctant to use it inside. You don’t need to use every colour in the rainbow, but using pops of colours can cheer up a space like nothing else. When it comes to adding bright colours to your home, there’s no limit to what you can do. The key is to know yourself and what you can live with. If you’re not ready for commitment, don’t spend a lot of money. Try incorporating them in small ways and then add more as you see fit. Contrary to belief, bold patterns and colours don’t make a room look smaller. They are actually a great way of adding maximum impact to a small space as they create drama and a cohesive look to a space. Wisely chosen bright colours for walls can significantly increase small rooms visually, balance proportion and create optimistic and cheerful mood. Vivid colour schemes make interiors look expressive. Even a small accent on a wall in a bright

less of a commitment but will have just as big an impact: paint a side chair, table or chest of drawers. Imagine walking into your entranceway and being greeted by a bright yellow console table or bold red side chair. Whether it’s a single toss cushion, a brightly upholstered ottoman, or beautiful window treatments, using fabrics made of bright colours is a great way to add life to a space. If you’re nervous of using a lot of them, start small. Don’t spend a lot of money on a bright sofa, but rather toss a few inexpensive toss cushions on a neutral sofa. Accessories such as a vase, a decorative box, a picture frame or even a bowl full of brightly coloured fruit can add joie de vivre to any space. Add a little zest around your house with bright artwork. These can be paintings, posters, or even art made by your kids. Put them in frames and hang on a wall. You can do this with pieces of fabric stretch over a canvas, or put brightly coloured objects in shadow boxes and hang them. Experiment with your dream colour by using it in one of your smaller rooms.

You may find that colour therapy works its own magic: not only can bright patterns and colours inject a youthful touch to your space, the right colours can spruce up dreary furnishings and even give a room a cheerful ambience.

Dark Sky Viewing Area goes intergalactic

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

ITH names like the Trifid, Lagoon and Eagle Nebulas as well as the Andromeda Galaxy, the sights that will be highlighted at the next Dark Sky Viewing Area stargazing event sound like they’re straight out of a science fiction novel. But they are in fact real places in the night sky and will be the focus of attention

during Joe Gilker’s laser guided tour, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Lennox and Addington County’s DSVA. “We’re going to be focusing on the core of the Milky Way, so a lot of the nebulas are exactly there,” said Gilker, a highly accomplished dark sky photographer/blogger who will offer a laser guided tour of the night sky as well as looks through his telescope. “Many of the nebulas are actually star forming

regions,” explained Gilker. “Large quantities of gas start to correlate together then gravity increases and their mass gets higher. Everything collapses onto itself and eventually new stars are born.” Previous seminars at the DSVA have focused on well-known objects such as Mars and Saturn whereas this talk will explore a lesser known region of the night sky. However that doesn’t mean the sights will be any less spectacular.

“They will see a lot of stars, then they will see the nebulas themselves,” Gilker said of looking through a telescope into the Milky Way. “Likely the breath-taking thing will be the Perseus Double Cluster. It’s pretty dazzling because there are a lot of bright, multi-coloured stars. You can really pick out their colours. It’s a nice cluster to look at.” Another area of focus will be the Andromeda Galaxy. “It’s the only object that you can see with the naked eye that’s not in our own galaxy,” Gilker said of Andromeda. “If you see the Andromeda Galaxy with your naked eye, it’s the furthest thing you will ever see in your life at 2.5 million light years away.” To get a better picture of

the nebulas Gilker says he will be setting up a wide angle telescope and will allow visitors a chance to take a glimpse. Though most of the planets will no longer be in their peak viewing range, he says there will also be a telescope pointed at Saturn for those who missed the previous seminar or for anyone who just wants to get another up-close look at the ringed planet. Friday’s event will be the fourth that Gilker and L&A County have hosted during their spring/summer series. “It’s been far better than I expected it would be,” Gilker said of the response, noting that attendance continued to grow with over 70 people attending the event they hosted over the Cana-

da Day weekend. As with previous events, Gilker will stay a bit later and offer tips to budding night sky photographers who want to bring their cameras along for some starry photographs. The event will run from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday, weather permitting. They will require a cloud-free evening to be able to see the stars. Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to check www.DarkSkyViewing.com the evening of the event for an updated weather report. The DSVA is located at 7879 County Rd. 41, about 37 kilometres north of Napanee. It is noted for its unobstructed views of the night sky, free of the light pollution that prevents good sight lines from major cities.

Take a break with a garden visit renewed collection of uncommon perennials, shrubs and trees, many preserved from the gardens’ 80 year history. And speaking of history, you will learn to appreciate the role of horticulture in Ontario history as you pass through this grand, new entrance to the Royal Botanical Gardens. As they say on the RBG website, “The new Rock Garden serves as a horticultural treasure and portrays the ecological importance and economic value that the RBG brings to its community (and all people who visit).” The new RBG Rock Garden includes an outstanding new restaurant, washrooms and a visitor’s centre. For reservations or more information go to www.rbg.ca. After your visit, I would be delighted to hear how you felt about your experience: does this new garden rock? Do you think that it was a good investment of $20 million? (I do) Let me know at www.markcullen.com – contact us. I am on my way back to see it again just as soon as I Garden can.

It is now officially mid-summer and time to treat yourself to a break. Who says? This guy. The guy who knows how you have nurtured the lawn, planted your garden, kept the weeds under control, mulched, pruned and watered all season. I know these things because I am in your group: we are all in this together. I am taking a break, so why not you? Do you need to travel abroad to ‘take a break’? Not on your life. Though, there is nothing wrong with air travel in the summer, when our landscapes are looking their very best and our public gardens are to die for. Stand in line at security and customs, sit on a plane to goodness knows where? Why not. Me? I am touring around my home province checking out our investment in some of the finest public gardens anywhere and I am starting at the newly-rejuvenated David Braley and Nancy Gordon Rock Garden at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington/Hamilton.

This Rock Rocks! This amazing metamorphosis is truly a tadpole that grew into a gorgeous, shiny new frog. You have to see it to believe it. You will want to get married there. If you are already married, you will want to attend someone else’s wedding there. There are extensive new perennial plantings, many in full bloom and looking their best this weekend. You will walk among a

Toronto Music Garden For over 10 years now, the Music Garden has been my favourite public garden in the entire city of Toronto. Why? On a mere two acres, the amazing design of this garden reflects the integration of classical music and horticulture. Designed in cooperation with Yo-Yo Ma, this garden is unique, indeed. And all the while, it sits on the edge of the marina at the west end of

Queens Quay, overlooking the calm harbour water with a wonderful view of Toronto Island, framed by plant material that is lush, green, colourful and moving with the breeze. As a music garden should, don’t you think? Take your time at this garden. It is easy to do as there are many benches, each strategically located to provide the best view possible. Watch pollinators work over the myriad of flowering plants, watch the people, take a thermos of coffee and a newspaper. Bring your camera. Stop. Be still. And hear the music of this extraordinary garden. Visit www.harbourfrontcentre.co m/venues/torontomusicgarden/. Toronto Botanical Gardens You can slow down and explore the TBG if you like, but it is more likely that you will want to check out the many activities at this beehive educational facility/garden. For details, go to torontobotanicalgarden.ca. Free admission. Events run the gambit from an Organic Farmers Market every Thursday to extensive programs for children, including summer day programs, Garden Sleepover, Halloween Howl (October), Harvest Day (September) and more. The three-acre garden deserves a slice of your time, to be sure, but keep in mind that the Gardens move seamlessly into Wycott Creek park, a long, meandering paved walking/bike path that continues

south all the way to Lake Ontario. I have biked it many times and I can get to the lake in about 45 minutes with a leisurely pace (versus the serious cyclists in all of the bike gear who race down the path). When you take this path you will feel as if you are in cottage country for much of your journey. On a nice, sunny day you will witness many groups enjoying picnics and

having day-long barbecues. The smells are amazing. Bring something to eat because your appetite will be hyper-stimulated. Visit torontobotanicalgarden.ca. Of course, if you are inclined to just stay home and enjoy the multi-sensory experience of your own garden that is OK too. You worked for it. You earned it. Hammock-time is an important ingredient in the over-

all gardening experience as is weeding, maybe more so. Mark Cullen is an expert gardener, author and broadcaster. Get his free monthly newsletter at markcullen.com. Look for his new best seller, ‘The New Canadian Garden’ published by Dundurn Press. Follow him on Twitter @MarkCullen4 and Facebook.

With school year around corner, help to ‘Fill The Bus’ While the children in our community are enjoying their summer vacation and not giving much thought to the upcoming school year, parents must start thinking and planning for their children’s return to the classroom. This will include a shopping trip or two for all the necessary supplies needed. For some families in this community, this can be a stressful time merely thinking of how they can provide the items their children will require to start their school year off on the right foot. For the past few years the Backpack Program has been growing momentum by partnering social agencies together to promote the program in the community. We are in great need of supplies for the backpacks such as water bottles, lunch pails, pencil cases etc. With the

generous support of Martin’s Bus Lines which will be supplying the bus and Giant Tiger with the location of the event, this campaign is sure to be a success. A bus will be parked at Giant

Dana Henry Food For Thought Tiger from this coming Tuesday to Friday from 2-6 p.m. and there will also be a donation bin at Giant Tiger where you can drop off donations if you miss us on location. Let’s surpass the previous year’s donations and make sure all children attending school will be prepared and have a successful year. Let’s fill the bus to the brim with backpacks and

school supplies. The distribution of the school supplies will take place on Aug. 17 at The Salvation Army in Napanee. Parents will need to contact the Salvation Army to register their children by Aug. 5. Parents will need to provide an ID for each child receiving a backpack and supplies upon day of pick up. All children need to be enrolled in school to receive supplies. Those interested in contributing — as a donor or volunteer — to this year’s Fill the Bus Campaign are encouraged to contact Dana Henry at 613-354-7633. Dana Henry is a member of the L&A Poverty Reduction Committee. A community based group committed to bringing local stakeholders together to collectively address the issue of poverty.

Home cooking For Napanee Novice Express U14 girls earn gold at PWSA Qualifier BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

attling the heat, injury bug and some of the best softball teams in Ontario, the home team Napanee Doyle’s Windows and Sunrooms Novice Express girls preserved to claim the top spot at the U14 PWSA Qualifiers, held this weekend in Napanee. All told the Express had just one bad inning the entire weekend, going 5-1 en route to capturing the championship and earning their way into the ‘A’ Division at the Grand Championship, which goes this weekend in Mississauga. “The top four finish was our first goal, then we obviously wanted to win at home which was a nice feather in our cap,” said Express coach Scott Morrow. “That gives us some confidence going into provincials this weekend.” Napanee captured the championship with an 11-5

victory over Brampton Gold thanks to five strong innings from starter Alexa Oreicuia. The Express saw contributions up and down the batting order to help pace them to victory. Sunday’s win not only earned them the gold medal, but was also a measure of revenge for the Express, who had lost 9-7 to Brampton the day before for their only loss of the weekend. Napanee held a lead in that game before coming undone in the sixth, committing five errors and allowing four runs to score. That would go down as their only really bad inning of the weekend and they were able to shake it off and play sharp the rest of the way. Napanee opened the tournament with a 16-1 win over Aurora on Friday night followed by a 12-5 win over Kingston. Facing the Vaughan Vikings in their third game, the Express were propelled by a brilliant start from Gracie Hearns, who gave them six solid innings in a 4-1 victory. Coach Morrow said it was one of the best games he had ever seen from his starter. That win moved the Express to the undefeated

Napanee’s depth was tested in that game as they lost Madison Young and Natalie Clemens to injury. “It was a total team effort,” said Morrow. “I had

Napanee fitness athletes star in MMA, OPA Striving to erase stereotypes

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Diamond Fitness Mixed Martial Arts’ Ashley LéTournéau and Meighen Hodgen shone brightly in the octagon and on the stage recently, each reaching the top in their respective disciplines. Both LéTournéau, a mixed martial arts competitor, and Hodgen, who competes in judged bikini competitions, are instructors at Napanee’s Diamond Fitness MMA, currently training out of 25 Dairy Ave. LéTournéau successfully defended her CanAm North American 115 Pounds Championship in Watertown, NY last weekend,

while Hodgen qualified for provincials at an Ontario Physique Association competition. Originally a kickboxer with over 28 matches over 10 years under her belt, LéTournéau made the switch to MMA 10 months ago. “I just got to the point where I wanted to mix together all the disciplines that I’ve trained in over the years,” said LéTournéau, adding that she also had four years wrestling experience from her high school days at Ernestown Secondary School. “I’m at the point now where I’m combining everything together.” Since making the switch to MMA she has spent many hours not only building strength, but studying strategy. “You have to think about it, you have to stay calm,” she says of what goes on when she’s squaring off

against an opponent. “You have to figure out what you’re going to do. It’s like a chess game, you’re always planning ahead.” After having travelled to the U.S. for her previous two MMA matches, LéTournéau will have the chance to fight close to home on Sept. 9 when Diamond Fitness hosts an MMA event at the Kingston Memorial Centre. Tickets for the fight, which will include a full card of local fighters, are available by calling 613-802-9279. It will mark the fight time an MMA event has come to Kingston. Organizers for the event have also expressed interest in bringing an event to Napanee in the near future. “It’ll be different, I won’t have to do the exhausting travel,” she said of being so close to home. “It’ll be pretty sweet.”

The Napanee Calderwood Automation Express mite boys went undefeated on the weekend to win the Eastern Ontario Qualifier Tournament. Napanee defeated Campbellford, Springbrook, Bridgenorth and West Carleton. With the win, Napanee moves on to the Provincial Championships to be held on Aug.13 and 14 in Ponsonby.

EXPRESS | Grand Championship this weekend CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “Vaughan is one of the best teams and we beat them twice,” said Morrow. “Brampton we lost to, but we didn’t play our very best, they played well but we let ourselves down with some mental mistakes and errors that cost us. We redeemed ourselves in the finals

Grand Championship. The top team from each pool, of which their are four, will advance to the semifinals, then finals. The top three teams from that tournament will advance to Winnipeg to plat at Nationals Aug. 17-21. Morrow says with the confidence from the qualifier, the team has every

expectation of earning a trip to Nationals. This weekend’s tournament was the second of three major tournaments that Softball Napanee will host this summer at the Fairgrounds. Their final big event will be Aug. 5-7 when they play host to the PWSA Squirt Girls Qualifier.

FITNESS | Diamond Fitness to host MMA event in Sept. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Now a MMA/fitness class instructor, she says she's out to dispel the myths that surround the sport she loves. “It's portrayed as very barbaric and almost like a blood sport,” said LéTournéau. “But what we teach isn’t bullies being bullies. We’re looking to teach them discipline and self confidence and to grow them physically and actively.” The 24-year-old has high aspirations, hoping to turn professional and join the Ultimate Fighting Championship by age 26. As for Hodgen, she’s

against them.” Rounding out the top four and also advancing into the ‘A’ pool was Brampton Gold, Vaughan and Kingston. With their win the Express will now play in a pool of top ranked teams that includes a La Salle ‘02 team and ‘03 team as well as Barrie at this weekend's

coming off a fourth place finish at an Ontario Physique Association competition. By virtue of her top five finish, she has qualified for next year's provincials which will give her a chance to go professional if she qualifies for Nationals. “They basically look at the physique and your posing,” said Hodgen of what the judges use to base their scores. “You do three to four poses on the stage.” Hodgen says she trains daily to stay in competitive form. “It’s a lot of muscle building and cardio for the bikini category that I’m in,” she said. “They look for a little bit of muscle and then

overall muscle tone. Everyday I’m pretty much at the gym doing cardio and weights, resistant training and strength training.” Like LéTournéau, she says her sport is also dogged by misinformation. Through her fitness classes, she’s hoping to encourage others to take up the sport. “We’re trying to bring the word to Napanee about these competitions and take away the stereotyping that I starve myself for weeks on end to get ready for these shows,” said Hodgen. “I probably eat more calories than a lot of people.” Diamond Fitness MMA owner Jason Kelly says the

goal of his gym is to give both competitive athletes and every day people a chance to get fit while having some fun. “What we’re trying to offer with our gym is offer every avenue in the fitness industry,” said Kelly. “We’re always looking for new avenues to go, we also help with health and fitness.” They first opened their doors a year ago and have quickly evolved to offer a wide variety of classes. Kelly is joined by Leonard Meyer, who has studied a wide variety of martial arts. For more on the gym visit www.DiamondFitnessMMA.com.

If you think last week’s precipitation was of much benefit to the rain-starved region, think again. According to Quinte Conservation, the rain had “no impact” on the current lowwater conditions. “Over Sunday and Monday we received an average of five millimetres of rain across the watershed,” said Water Resources Manager Christine McClure in a press release issued Tuesday. “Belleville received the most with 10mm, while areas like Tweed received only about one millimeter. We need between 75 and 100mm of slow, steady rain to make any difference. Rain that falls quickly in thunderstorms does little to help the groundwater as it runs off instead of soaking into the ground.” Quinte Conservation will be meeting with the Low Water Response Team — which has representation from local municipalities, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and other agencies — to go over current conditions next week. A Level 2 low water condition was declared by Quinte Conservation and the Low Water Response Team due to lack of rainfall and low flows in local rivers and streams on July 12. The area has been experiencing low water conditions since the beginning of June. A Level 2 low water Condition indicates a potentially serious water supply problem. This level often means minor water supply issues are encountered and there is the potential for major supply problems. Dur-

ing a Level 2 Low Water Condition residents, businesses and municipalities are asked to reduce their non-essential water usage by 20 per cent. Non-essential use includes lawn watering and the washing of sidewalks, decks, buildings or driveways. “The long range forecasts do not show much rain, either,” McClure added. “It looks as though the hot and dry conditions will continue into the fall. This means we are at risk of moving into a Level 3 low water condition unless we receive a steady amount of rain.” The environmental organization is encouraging any individuals or businesses in the Quinte watersheds who experience problems or hardships, such as wells going dry, to contact Quinte Conservation by calling 613968-3434 or 613-354-3312 and dialing extension 130. Reports can also be emailed to info@quinteconservation.ca. These reports will help the organization track the impacts of the low water condition. “In the summer months close to 50 per cent of water usage in the average home happens in the lawn and garden,” said McClure. “Handwatering vegetable gardens in the early morning or evening and not watering the lawn can go a long way toward conserving water. Toilets and showers use the most water inside the home so any possible conservation in those areas will also be a help.” Well owners should take steps to protect their well pump. A licensed contractor can be hired to check water levels, make sure the pump is working well and make sure the pump is protected against running dry.

Diversified agri-food sector to drive northern growth

July 14 - By Mark Kunkel, Director, Ontario Federation of Agriculture

Northern Ontario is one of agriculture’s biggest untapped opportunities. Climate change, improved land drainage, new crop varieties and the use of innovative technologies like precision agriculture and row covers are all leading to the rise of productive farmland in northern Ontario. Generally considered the area north of Lake Huron, northern Ontario holds tremendous growth potential for the agri-food sector. The Ontario government recognized the promise in this region with its 2011 Growth Plan for Northern Ontario – a plan to guide decision making until 2036. Agri-food is one of 11 existing and emerging priority economic sectors identified in the growth plan and is the focus of a new strategy to develop an agriculture, aquaculture and food processing sector strategy for northern Ontario. Development of this new sector would build the capacity for greater agricultural services and bring more opportunities for value added commodities. The northern strategy also aligns with the Premier’s 2013 agri-food growth challenge and the Premier’s 2014 mandate letter to OMAFRA to explore opportunities to develop agriculture in northern Ontario. Expanding agriculture, aquaculture and food processing in northern Ontario brings unique opportunities for farmers to look for new, innovative approaches to food, fibre and biofuel production. Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) recently submitted an Environmental Bill of Rights discussion paper on northern expansion opportunities. OFA has long been a supporter of expanding Ontario’s agri-food sector in northern Ontario. Our recommendations include investments in broadband and infrastructure, releasing user-friendly soil maps, increasing availability of Crown land and enhancing agricultural research. OFA’s recommendations for growth in northern Ontario reflect our vision for all of Ontario agriculture – to increase connectivity, promote an economically robust agri-food system and support OFA members in their efforts to maintain and expand their agricultural operations in Ontario. OFA will provide feedback on the detailed strategy for northern Ontario that the government is expected to release later this year. A strategy for 76 East Street, Napanee northern Ontario has the potential to benefit all OFA members by strengthening our entire industry and promoting economic development in agriculture. Ontario’s biggest growth oppo
