Mike Bossio to hold series of meetings on issue BY SETH DUCHENE

Local MP Mike Bossio says he’s keeping an open mind as his government tackles the issue of electoral reform. Following through on a promise from last year’s federal election campaign, the Liberal government is forging ahead with its plan to reform Canada’s electoral system, having struck a multi-party committee to consult with the public and experts and develop a plan for that reform. As such, Bossio says he plans on having a series of three ‘town hall’ meetings in the riding relating to electoral reform in August and September — in Bath, Tweed and Bancroft. He also said the issue will be touched on in the MP’s next ‘householder’ delivered across the riding. Bossio says it’s an issue that he has received some feedback on — even long before he was elected — though he says he’d like to see more input. “The individuals that are most engaged on it, that are most concerned about it, are the ones who have been reaching out and engaging for some time. Now we need to get to try to expand that to hear from as many different individuals as possible,” he said. He admits it will be no small feat for the electoral reform committee, which has been given six months to report back to the House of Commons with recommendations for moving forward, to fulfill its mandate.

Police Beat

‘Tax scam’ making rounds: OPP Traffic stop leads Phone fraudseters claiming to represent Revenue Canada

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Napanee OPP are warning residents of an ongoing phone scam that involves callers posing as Revenue Canada agents threatening legal action if their potential victims don’t pay ‘back taxes’. The callers look to use scare tactics to force their victims to wire them thousands of dollars. Police have received reports of the scammers calling multiple times, each time identifying themselves as Revenue Canada agents. They attempt to force their victim into simply paying the fraudulent fee over the phone with the threat of a

heavier fine if they don’t pay before the police arrive. “They’re getting aggressive now and saying officers will be en route to their home to arrest them if they don’t pay the money right away or wire it,” said Napanee OPP Const. Jackie Perry. “It’s very frightening for people. The only good thing is word-of-mouth has gotten out there through social media. People are more aware of it, but I still see it daily.” Perry advises anyone who receives the call to phone the police, who will assure them that no arrest warrant has been issued in their name. She also encourages people to check with their friends and family, as chances are someone they

know has received the same call. That way they can put their mind at ease before they do anything rash. Perry says the calls, which are difficult to trace because they often originate from out of the country, are an ongoing problem. The fraudsters will often ‘spoof’ their number, making it impossible to track. They also have the technology to fool some caller ID programs, and can make their number show up as Revenue Canada, lending further credibility to their scam. In May alone police statistics show there were 2,669 documented attempts of phone scams across Canada. There were 842 victims who lost close to $5 million. And Perry says it’s likely the actual number is far higher but many times the victims are too embarrassed to report it. “Another spin they’re putting on it is saying you have a (tax) return, but you have to provide your banking info,” said Perry. Yet another popular one going around right now is a bogus mystery shopper job offer.

“The fraudster will send them a letter or cheque in the mail,” said Perry. “In order to fulfil their mystery shopper task they have to cash the cheque that’s sent to them and then send a large portion of it by Western Union or money graham. Then you find out later the cheque is fraudulent and you’re on the hook for all the money with your financial institution.” Another one is a job offer to work from home. In order to get the equipment to do their job, they must send a cheque to their employer. Many times they send the money and never hear back from them again. “It’s legitimately people trying to find work,” Perry says of the victims. “It’s usually people in need of money. They’re sending what little money they have or they’re borrowing money and end up losing that and owning more.” Perry says if a job offer seems too good to be true, than it is. Anyone who receives any of these types of phone calls or text messages are encourages to report it to the police.

Poaching charges

Two Loyalist Township residents have been charged with narcotics and other offences after an incident earlier this week. According to the OPP, an officer with the Napanee detachment who was conducting traffic enforcement stopped a grey Audi on Highway 401 just east of Napanee at 7 p.m. Monday night. The driver of the vehicle was unable to produce identification and police investigation revealed that he provided a false name and date of birth. The driver was subsequently arrested for obstructing police. A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of what appeared to be 127 grams of MDMA (Ecstasy), 33 tablets of methamphetamine, 15 grams of hash oil, 12 500mg units of ‘Potent Pens’ liquid cannabis and 37g of marihuana. The total street value of the seizure is estimated at $14,650. A 34-year-old male and 17-year-old female from Loyalist Township face charges of obstructing police and four counts each of possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafficking. Both were held in custody pending a bail hearing today in provincial court in Napanee. Anyone with information in relation to the production, sale or distribution of illegal drugs is asked to contact their nearest police agency, Crime Stoppers or report anonymously online at Tipsubmit.com.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conducted a three-day enforcement blitz on Deerock Lake, in the Elzevir Peatlands Conservation Reserve near Flinton. From June 17 to 19, 2016, conservation officers from the Peterborough Enforcement Unit checked 124 people for compliance with the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, Ontario Fishery Regulations, Public Lands Act, Liquor Licence Act, Small Vessel Regulations and the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act. A total of 15 charges and 24 warnings were issued for the following offences: fishing without a licence; catching and retaining bass out of season; catching and retaining bass over the legal limit; transporting live fish; not carrying a licence when fishing; camping other than at an identified campsite; disobeying a notice under the Public Lands Act; unlawfully cutting trees in a conservation reserve; failing to keep a campsite clean; having an open container of liquor in a boat; and operating a small vessel without the required safety equipment To report a natural resources violation, call the MNRF TIPS line at 1-877847-7667 toll-free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. Picturing Our Community

AST week in this space we discussed the differences between nationalism and patriotism. Our national pride, however, took something of a swipe on July 1 in Kingston when a small group of protesters burned a Canadian flag during that city’s parade on Canada Day. The protesters, who were also carrying a Mohawk warrior flag, quickly made off after the deed was done. (The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte have since officially denounced the act, saying it did not support the actions of the protesters). If you saw that and cringed, you certainly weren’t alone. Although the practice of burning the Maple Leaf is an exceedingly rare act in Canada, flag-burning has had some pretty prominent episodes in the United States over the years. It never failed to fire up the debate over whether or not that act should be made illegal. In fact, legislators have spent a great deal of time and energy trying to prohibit it. However, legislation passed making it unlawful to burn the Stars and Stripes were struck down by the Supreme Court because the legislation violated the First Amendment to the Constitution — that is, the right to free speech. Lawmakers then tried to amend the Constitution to forbid ‘flag desecration’; while those measures gained considerable support, the measures never gained enough support to actually amend the Constitution. While there has been some informal chatter since Friday that ‘there oughta be a law’ against burning the flag, we haven’t heard much from politicians on the issue. That’s probably because, like in the U.S., protections of free speech contained in the Charter of Rights of Freedom would likely strike down any such law. That’s probably as it should be. Freedom of speech is one of the underpinnings of our democratic system, and it’s a freedom that should be closely guarded. That said, we’re also free to say that we certainly didn’t like what happened on Friday. It’s a gutpunch to our patriotism on the most patriotic day of a year. Now, the protesters will likely say that was the point: that Canada has collectively failed First Nations people for decades, and if it takes a flagburning to make Canadians sit up and take notice, then all the better. The problem with that approach is that people have a natural tendency to look past the reason for the protest and focus on the protest itself, and that’s where the discussion tends to stay. Instead of fostering the political will to do something about it, it’s more likely to foster animosity; the goal becomes that much more elusive. So, yes, burning the Canadian flag is something you can do if you feel that’s what you need to do. But don’t be surprised if it fails to have the desired effect.

Last week, Napanee Beaver cartoonist received his certificate for taking third place in the 2015 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards ‘best local cartoon’ category. Nimigan finished second in the same category in 2014.

The legacy of lead The following is a monthly column designed to teach local residents about the wild animals that live among us. Marilyn Kendall is writing the column for the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre, a Napanee-based facility that cares for injured wildlife. Every year in Canada, 250,000 waterfowl die of lead poisoning. Sue Meech at Sandy Pines adds that those deaths are slow and painful. She knows because she treats numerous birds every year who suffer from lead

Marilyn Kendall On The Wild Side poisoning. When they are found still living and brought to her, they are weak and emaciated with heads hanging low and their waterproofing gone. They have beached themselves, knowing they are dying. How does this happen? Ducks, geese and other waterfowl ingest bits of lead they find while feeding on the bottoms of bodies of water.

These lead fragments are primarily shotgun pellets that missed their target and fell into water. It is estimated that, for every five or six shots required to kill a bird, only a few actually enter the bird; the rest — approximately 1000 — enter the environment. Once ingested, and exposed to digestive fluids and stomach acids, the lead is broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream and distributed to vital organs and systems.

■ There was going to be some turnover both on Napanee council and on the Napanee police force. In the same week, a councillor and a constable handed in their resignations. B.F. (Tod) Davy said he was resigning his spot on council in order to take a new job in Kingston. With the next election happening in December, it was expected council would continue to operate with a vacancy until then. Meanwhile, Constable Thomas McCrea announced that he would be retiring from the force. The police service was expected to post his position shortly. ■ The Macpherson House was set to get 40 new windows. For the past four years, masking tape had been used to simulate 12-pane windows. The new hand-made windows, however, wouldn’t rely on subterfuge in order to project a ‘heritage’ look. The panes were to be made with old, bubbly glass, if possible — despite the fact that finding such glass was difficult. The project was being handled by restoration architect Peter Stokes and craftsman Bill Hooper.

If lead is found, it means that the ingested pellets have broken down. Then a step called chelation is taken which involves injecting a heavy metal into the bird to absorb the lead.

If the lead has not yet reached the bloodstream, then an X-ray is taken to see if there is lead in the bird that has not broken down. If that is the case, then it must be removed. This involves giving the bird an anaesthetic and flushing out the system with fluids. Sometimes both systems are required. Years ago, the ‘Bird Lady of Verona,’ Kit Chubb,

reported that 80 per cent of the loons brought to her had lead in their systems. All of these birds died since today’s technology did not exist at the time. Lead enters the bodies of birds in others way, the most common being through ingesting fishing weights that have been lost. And eagles and other raptors are exposed to lead when they scavenge the remains of ani-

mals that have been shot and left in the field. The good news is that, on Sept. 1, 1999, the use of lead shot while hunting most migratory game birds was banned throughout Canada. The bad news? Innumerable lead pellets have accumulated in our waters over time and so their presence will continue to affect waterfowl for years to come.

■ Napanee doctors and those around the region were poised to start taking part in rotating strikes that were happening around the province. The job action was intended to protest the provincial government’s decision to end the practice of extra billing. The president of the Napanee Medical Association, Dr, Paul Kenney, said he expected a majority of local members to support taking part in the rotating strikes when the issue was to be put to a vote. Doctors elsewhere in the province had already been taking part in similar strikes. ■ Napanee town council put its support behind the efforts of the Concerned Parents Association of Lennox and Addington. The group was petitioning to see subsidized child care spaces created in L&A County, with the financial support of the federal and provincial governments. Ultimately, council unanimously supported the group’s goals. The group was expected to approach L&A County council later on the month in an effort to gain the county’s backing for the effort.

‘Fakes and Forgeries’ will keep you guessing

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

A new exhibit at the Lennox and Addington County Museum and Archives is challenging visitors to put on their detective hat to see if they can spot a phoney artifact or collectable from the real deal. Titled ‘Fakes and For-

geries, the exhibit is on loan from the Royal Ontario Museum. It’s made up of 115 items from historical specimens to pop culture collectables — some real, some knock-offs. The items are divided into different sections starting with centuries-old miniature statues all the way up to modern day pirated computer software. There’s also a section

dedicated to counterfeit money. Each of the 11 cases gives guests the chance to first guess which item is real and which is fake before they lift up a flap that gives them the answer. They can then read up on how experts can spot the difference and can pick up a few tricks of the trade. “This is kind of a compliment to what’s happening with ‘Arresting Images’,” L&A County Museum and Archives curator JoAnne Himmelman says of the new exhibit, referencing the ‘mug shot’ exhibit which just opened last month which will be running alongside Fakes and Forgeries. “You’ve got these fakes and forgeries being created and people are falling for it. These exhibits just kind of outline that industry.” While it may sound easy to spot a fake, many times it’s not so straightforward. “The fake ones are pretty convincing,” said Himmelman. “Once you pull up the flap and realize why it’s a fake, then you kind of look at it and say ‘OK, I see the difference.’ Until you read that, you can’t tell.” Among the cases on display are ‘Improving on Nature’, which shows how the alteration of minerals can fool investors into sinking millions of dollars into a worthless mining claim for materials such as gold; the ‘Setting a Fine Table’ case

A Sidney Crosby Team Canada jersey is among the collectibles (or fakes?) currently on display at the L&A County Museum and Archive. examines authentic Chinese made porcelain plates compared to English factory produced copies and Fossils; ‘Buyers Beware’ talks of how once living remains can be tampered with in an attempt to enhance their value to collectors and scientists. Because the exhibit has such a wide variety of items it will likely appeal to all

ages. For the sports fan, there is even a section on memorabilia including a Sidney Crosby Team Canada Olympic sweater. “I can see teenagers and kids being drawn right away to the hockey jersey because it says ‘Crosby’ on the back,” said Himmelman. “Some of the more traditional museum-goers might be more interested in the

antiques, then we have the nature stuff. I think it has a nice eclectic kind of feel. People should find something interesting and fun.” Because it’s from the ROM, it’s a perfect opportunity for families to enjoy a professionally curated exhibit without having to make the trip to Toronto. Himmelman says the two exhibits that focus on crime tie in nicely with the history of the museum, as it is housed inside the old county jail. The museum is located at 97 Thomas Street East in Napanee.

Activities aplenty at Macpherson House Full schedule of summer events planned at historic home through July and August

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

HE Allan Macpherson House will be a hub of activity this summer with plenty of events scheduled for all ages throughout July and August. Along with being open for tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the historic centuries old house will be the site of workshops, historic demonstrations, live music and plays throughout the summer. “There are tons of activities, lots of things to do and see at the house and still enjoy its historical content as well as its gardens, with a few little twists as well,” said JoAnne Himmelman,

T

curator with the Lennox and Addington County Museum and Archives. The busy ‘Demo Thursdays’ summer season gets underway today as the house welcomes Fiona Lucas for ‘What’s Cooking on the Hearth?’ “She knows her stuff, she’s an amazing cooker,” Himmelman said of Lucas, noting she is a culinary historian from Toronto and past president of the Culinary Historians of Ontario. “She’s going to be making it as hands on as possible. She has pea soup and she’ll be making cherry pie in the Dutch oven.” Like all Demo Thursdays, the event will run from 1 to 3 p.m. and is absolutely free.

The rest of the Demo Thursday schedule includes Fairy Gardens with Lisa Davis (July 14), What’s that Bird? (Bird watching along the shores of the Napanee River) with Mark Read (July 21), Hand Felting with Beth Fisher (July 28), Heritage Masonry with John Scott (Aug. 4), Hand Dyeing with Fisher (Aug. 11), Christmas in the Summer (making stain glass art work) with Howard Sandles (Aug. 18) and Heirloom Seeds with Cate Henderson (Aug. 25). “The heritage demonstrations bring (the house) alive,” said Himmelman, adding that they give families who have toured the house before another reason to come back.

On Aug. 25 musician Lotus Wight will perform with a banjo and contrabass harmoniphonium for a unique sound. Tickets are $3 for each show, both getting underway at 7 p.m. On Aug. 17 and 18 there will be a theatrical performance of Salt Water Moon, a play about two former lovers reuniting to confront their

past choices and to contemplate a possible future. All set in Newfoundland in the early following the conclusion of the First World War. Tickets for the show will be $15. “We have music, live theatre and lots of arts and heritage,” said Himmelman. “We tried to hit it all this summer.” The Macpherson House is located at 180 Elizabeth St. in Napanee and was once home to one of Napanee’s most prominent member of society, who operated the grist and saw mills at the Napanee River falls. A halfcousin to Sir John A. Macdonald, Macpherson is known to have hosted Canada’s first Prime Minister at his estate on a few occasions.

Starstop Series welcomes soulful blues performers Texas-based ex-pat Danny Brooks and wife L’il Miss Debi next up for Napanee show next week

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

‘Texassippi’ soul man Danny Brooks and L’il Miss Debi will headline the next Starstop Concert, performing at Napanee’s Ellena’s Café on July 14. Hailing from Llano, TX, the husband-and-wife duo will bring a ‘Southern soul’ sound to the stage, one not typically heard in these parts. “Southern soul is an amalgam of R&B, blues, rock, country and gospel,” said Brooks. “I had a very Southern upbringing in that I was born and raised on gospel music — The Soulsters, The Blind Boys, Hank Williams Sr. and all the rhythm-and-blues greats from my brother Greg’s collection, from Solomon Burke and Otis Redding.” Originally from Toronto, Brooks has travelled the world before settling down in Texas in 2008. With over 30 years experience and 11 CDs to his credit, Brooks has played shows at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, the Distillery Blues Festival, the Beaches

International Jazz Festival in Toronto and Ottawa Bluesfest among his many stops across North America. He’s also appeared on CBC radio, Open Mike with Mike Bullard and 100 Huntley Street. “We love our audience,” Brooks says of what he keeps him going after all these decades. “We love to play. Music is a very powerful, healing source. We get as touched as the listener. It’s a real honour and privilege just to play music. To have a thought or an idea that you can put on paper and then put in a song, to me that’s magic.” Brooks says the life he’s spent on the road really comes through in his music. Each region that he has visited along the way has influenced his music in one way or another, which is where he gets his ‘Texassippi’ (Texas-Mississippi) sound. The duo make their way into the Starstop Concert Series as part of their ongoing tour to promote their latest CD This World Is Not Your Friend. “On the last CD it’s a dual CD of how we sound when we do our live shows,”

L’il Miss Debi and Danny Brooks will bring some authentic ‘Texassippi’ music to Ellena’s Café in Napanee next Thursday as part of the Starstop Concert Series. said Brooks. “There’s a stomp board, cajun, vocals, slide, cigar box and regular guitars and harmonica. We make quite a racket for two people, let me tell you.” The CD is described as having a primal roots, Ameri-

cana, southern soul, hill country, gospel and even a bit of reggae sound. It’s received high praise from musical reviewers. Samples of his music can be found at www.DannyBrooksMusic.com. Tickets for the show are

$20 and available at Ellena’s Cafe, located at 16 Dundas Street East. They’re also available online at www.Starstop.ca. The show will get underway at 7:30 p.m. The Starstop Series was

started in 2015 and is a community based organization that strives to make Greater Napanee a destination for musical acts inbetween gigs who might be making their way along Hwy 401.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Bossio said that it will need to meet that deadline if the government wants to implement any electoral reform package before the next federal election in 2019. And, if the committee recommends putting the issue to a referendum, then that adds to the time crunch, he said. During the last election, the Liberals pledged that the 2015 election would be the last election using the current first-past-the-post method. Although there has been some discussion on what that new system will be, there has been much debate over how the government will go about implementing that reform. The Conservative Party has strenuously argued that any electoral reform package must be subject to a national referendum. Although the Liberal government initially resisted the prospect of holding a referendum, it hasn’t been ruled out. On that score, Bossio admits he’s torn, saying he’s sympathetic to arguments both for and against a referendum. “What we’re trying to do is we’re trying to do the right thing. We’re trying to bring about an electoral system that is fair and representative of the desires of the voter. That’s really what we’re trying to do,” he said. He says he’s also keeping an open mind on what the next electoral system should be. “I’m totally up in the air… I don’t want to pre-dispose myself until I’ve heard from constituents,” he said. “Initially, I will admit, prior to really digging into this… I was one who was in favour of proportional representation,” he continued. “Now, I don’t know if it makes sense to do it. Hybrid? Does it make sense? Preferential ballot? First-past-the-post? I’m not going to predispose myself in any way. I’ve seen other systems that are interesting.”

Family nature day, fishing derby planned for this weekend

BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

This Saturday, local families will get double the opportunity to get up-close and personal with nature in Erinsville After a kids fishing derby organized by the Tamworth and District Lions Club from 9:30 a.m.-noon a.m., Quinte Conservation and the Friends of the Salmon River are hosting a ‘Wild about Wildlife’ family nature day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All events will take place at Lions Beaver Lake Park, just off County Road 41. Maya Navrot, Conservation Education Co-ordinator for Quinte Conservation, says it’s no accident that the two events are held on the same day, either. “Each year, we contact (the Lions Club) to find out when the derby will be so we can have it at the same time,” she JULY 22 FRIDAY LUNCH AT THE LEGION At the Bath Legion in Millhaven, from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Good food, good company. Afterwards, the same families can participate in a number of nature-themed activities organized by Quinte Conservation and the FSR. Navrot said that this is the third such event held in Erinsville; similar events have been held in other communities across the Quinte Conservation watershed over the past four years. “Each year, our goal is to bring it to six communities across our watershed,” she said. has been a great way to introduce the event to new families.” She also said that partnering with community organizations and events, like the fishing derby in Erinsville, has contributed to that popularity. Navrot says the goal is to reach out to as many families as possible, building on the conservation camps established in Picton and Belleville. “We started these events four years ago as a way of expanding our education programs across the watershed and opening it up to people of all ages,” she said. “So, a lot of these activities… they were activities and special guests that we had in our conservation camps in Belleville and Picton. This was the way of taking some of these popular activities and environmental messages and spreading it across the watershed and inviting anyone from the community to come and participate in fun, out-

Among those activity stations is a ‘create art with nature’ station. The live raptors and live reptile display will be back, with new specimens. “A popular activity has always been where people can take a wildflower home to plant in their yard. They make a paper pot and take it home. This year, we’ll have three new species of wildflowers,” Navrot added. The event also enjoys the support of Union Gas and the Biodiversity Education and Awareness Network.

Enjoying your home office Most families today have a home office that plays many roles. In my home, I work from home writing my design columns and my interior design business. My husband uses the space to pay bills, and my three kids as a place to do homework and play games on the computer. A home office doesn’t have to be serious even if the work you do there is. Whether you call your home office a blessing or a curse, one thing’s for sure, your mood and your productivity will be affected by how it is set up. Just as a cluttered desk is a cluttered mind, a disorganized home office may be the source of unnecessary mindblocks to new ideas and solutions. One of the greatest benefits of a home office is the freedom to decorate and design your home office as you wish, but without letting either space lose their identity. By planning your home

office space, getting it organized, and decorating it to express who you are, you’ll enjoy it more. Your work will be better, you’ll appreciate being home, and you’ll have the perfect place to work — your home. First off, identifying the space for your home office is a start. If your space is limited, you won’t have as many choices. By removing the clothes pole and installing electrical connections, you can easily convert a closet of any size into a work space. If you’ll be spending a lot of time in your home office, you might prefer a better view and more room. Identify space that is infrequently used, such as a guest room or dining area. If using the dining room, perhaps consider using an armoire for papers, a computer and printer, which is easily closed and kept behind closed doors. Think of all the things

you’ll need to work comfortably and efficiently from your home office. Start with proper temperature control and lighting. Probably the most important piece of furniture you’ll need is a desk or work surface. Whether you select custom-designed cabinets and writing surface or use two filing cabinets with a door stretched across them, this is where you spend most of your time, and it should be large enough and the right height to most comfortably do your work. When picking out your desk (or desks, for a large family space), be sure to consider its overall function. If working from home, pick an oversized, sturdy desk that can contain all your work documents in one space. It should look professional and be double-sided so you can hold meetings. To prevent any work/home mix-ups, have a separate desk for the rest of the family to use, and ensure your workspace is off limits. If your kids use the room as a homework spot, try a two-person desk or even an extended built-in counter where several can sit at one time. If you

primarily use the space for odds and ends, a smaller, fashionable secretary desk might do the trick, as long as you have additional storage options. If space is limited, draw out a floor plan on graph paper and move the

Merola Tahamtan Design Time shapes of your furniture around until you find a workable space. This will save you the time of moving the actual furniture around in the room. Select a chair that is comfortable, the right height, and provide proper back and arm support for the type of work you’ll be doing. As you’re planning your new home office, don’t just go out and buy a desk and chair. If you plan ahead, you’ll be able to work comfortably and efficiently and enjoy your workat-home lifestyle. It is extremely important to have proper lighting in a home office. To reduce eye strain, have lighting installed

over your reading area, over the computer, and behind you so that there is no reflection off the computer monitor. Place the computer monitor a comfortable distance from your chair so you don’t need to squint or use reading glasses to read the screen. By reducing eye strain, you’ll be able to work longer and more safely. Of course, you’ll want all your office supplies at hand. Sort through your supplies and get rid of anything extra. Clutter is very distracting and reduces efficiency. Get your schedule, your routine, and your workspace organized and you’ll work better. Identify a space for printer paper, manuals, and reference books. Place the mail in the same place every day and have the telephone within arm’s reach. If your storage space is limited in your designated home office, find a place in another area of your home for items and supplies that you use less frequently. If you will be having clients in your home office, be sure that they don’t have to walk past a sleeping baby or dirty kitchen to get to you. Keep things as professional as possible. And consider the privacy of your work. If clients will be waiting for an appointment with you, provide comfortable seating, a reading light and interesting literature. Traditionally, an office is formal and laden with woodwork, but that doesn’t mean you can’t branch out on your décor. To add a personalized

touch, bring in framed family photographs and little travel souvenirs you’ve picked up along the way. For those must-have accessories, like pencil cups, paper trays and magazine holders, try to find bright, vibrant patterns to add a touch of colour. Keep track of key tasks with a bulletin board, chalkboard or whiteboard; they’re great for reminders and can also be used to hang funky pictures or cool drawings. If you work from home, you owe it to yourself to set up a proper office space. It’s vital you have somewhere to concentrate that’s separate from your home life — and is hopefully a nice space to spend time in. A good working space is even more important if you operate your small business out of your home. Home offices are no longer relegated to a corner of the basement or inside a small closet. With more and more people working from home, the home office has become an important space in the largest home or the smallest apartment. As I’m writing this design column from my home office, looking outside at my kids flying their kites in our front lawn, there is no greater joy being able to work from home and enjoy the moments with my kids. Bantam Express finish second at home, qualify for U16 Nationals Napanee Junior Express fall short in Tavistock eliminations, will miss U21 Championships

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

he host Napanee AFW Construction Bantam Express had two shots to win the top spot at the OASA Bantam Eliminations this weekend, but couldn’t seal the deal. Napanee entered the finals with a perfect 3-0 record in the double-knock out tournament, which meant the Belmore Sting would need to pull off backto-back wins to claim gold while the Express needed just one win. The Sting would go on to sweep the finals by scores of 10-3 and 6-2. Though they may have failed to win the red banner, they did accomplish their main objective which was to qualify for the 2016 U16 Canadian Fastpitch Championship, which will be held Aug. 10-14 in Owen Sound. “It was a little bit tough after we qualified (Saturday), it was hard coming to the ballpark to find something to play for,” said Express head coach Bryan Brooks, noting his team lacked the drive they had exhibited in their first three games. The Express did get off to a roaring start in the first game of Sunday’s finals as Brendan Hagerman opened the game with a single and was chased to third on a double by Finn Pierce. Emmet Pierce would cash a run with a sac fly. Hagerman was robbed of two RBI in the second when Belmore's centre fielder dashed in to pick a sinking line drive just off the top of the grass to end the inning. Things quickly unravelled in the bottom of the inning for Napanee as Belmore led off with an inside the park home run and continued to chip away with base hits that rolled through the infield. The Sting nickel and dimed their way to a comfortable lead, cranking out and endless supply of singles and doubles to account for a nine run inning. No ball was particularly hard hit but each one was well placed, allowing the Sting to build a 9-1 lead.

T

entered their final at-bat tied 1-1. With two outs in the seventh Napanee’s Emmet Pierce tripled to drive in the go-ahead run. He was replaced by pinch runner Walker Lyons who scored a huge insurance run on a wild pitch. That run would turn out to be the difference as Shallow Lake scratched out a run in the bottom half of the inning before Jacob Either slammed the door. In their third game the Express routed Belmore 9-3 to move to 3-0 and earn a double-life in the finals. For Napanee the tournament marked their first time seeing teams their own age and was a chance to them to see how they measure up against the best in Ontario. “It was a little bit of a learn on the go,” said Brooks. “We took awhile to adjust to some of the pitching styles, some good some not so good. They'll make that selection this week and resume league play as they now shift their focus on getting prepared for Canadians. “I definitely think that we’re in the running,” Brooks said of Nationals. “Other teams might be a little bit deeper before pick ups than we are just because of the area that they’re drawing from.” Meanwhile in Grafton the news wasn’t as positive for the Shoeless Joe's Junior Express, as they failed in their attempt to qualify for the U21 Canadians. Retro flight with Captain Midnight In the same way that modern kids fantasized about space travel and adventure as they watched Star Trek, youngsters who lived during the Second World War imagined themselves fighting along with the Allies (the good guys battling the Axis — Germany, Japan, and Italy). They entered into the spirit of the global conflict as they sat by their radios and listened to the exploits of mythical heroes like Jimmy Allen, Smilin’ Jack, Terry and the Pirates, ‘L’ for Lanky (a Lancaster Bomber) and Captain Midnight! For children who grew up during those historic years, an active imagination, along with realistic sound effects, took them right into the midst of the intrigue which spanned 1939 through 1945. Captain Midnight made its debut on Chicago’s WGN in 1938. This moniker was the undercover name for Captain Jim ‘Red’ Albright, who regularly piloted cargo

cle. Chuck Ramsay was his right-hand man, a fellow undercover agent from the very beginning. Ichabod Mudd was our hero’s chief mechanic and technician. An acquaintance even before the Secret Squadron was formed, he kept airplanes in repair, developed special weapons, and was responsible for the inception of the ‘Code-O-Graph’. Finally there was a gifted young woman, Joyce Ryan, an amnesiac found by the above trio during a skirmish with Ivan Shark in 1941. She was an accomplished pilot, and fearless in her dedication to Captain Midnight’s causes. During the war, the gang’s German archenemy was Baron von Karp. Admiral Himakito was his Japanese counter-

part. Following America’s entry into the Second World War, the adventurous air ace was depicted as both the pilot of single-seated fighter planes, and as the skipper of multi-engine bombers, with Chuck, Joyce, and Mudd as his crew. This writer recalls many an action-filled minute listening to this team on bombing missions, both over Berlin and Japan. Few kids’ radio shows

Among the seemingly endless conglomeration were the Flight Commander Badge, the Captain Midnight Decoder, the Trick and Riddle Book, the Flight Patrol Badge, and Magic Eye Ring. The most practical was the Plane Spotter, which featured profiles of both enemy and allied airplanes. After a stint on TV, the series concluded in 1949.

COMMUNITY FARM CALENDAR July 8 - L&A Holstein Barbeque, 6:30pm-9pm, Rippplebrook Farms, 7836 County Road #2, Napanee, East OFA advocacy update at the halfway point of the Liberal mandate

June 17 - By Don McCabe, President, Ontario Federation of Agriculture Ontario’s majority Liberal government has reached the halfway point in its four-year mandate. They have initiated and completed many legislative bills and actions. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) has actively responded to and influenced many of these. To achieve the best outcomes for our farm members and rural Ontario, advocating with the best advice means working across multiple government ministries, and with various partners. OFA wishes to thank the many individuals who helped to move issues ahead through joint action. Some folks are part of county federations, Chambers of Commerce, farm organizations, environmental groups, other non-profit organizations, subject matter coalitions and many others too numerous to mention. participating and coordinating must be acknowledged here too for the preparation of responses on so many topics and so many deadlines. The hours spent by many in attending town hall meetings, county federation organized political outreach meetings and consultations of all descriptions to carry OFA supported messages has got messages delivered. Bringing the collective voice of 36,000 OFA members to fruition cannot be done without having informed elected MPPs. No matter the side of the aisle a party sits on in Queen’s Park, the OFA is thankful for the opportunities given by all MPPs for meetings, breakfast caucuses, lobby event attendance, committee hearing appearances, phone calls, etc. to hear OFA’s input to their deliberations. Here is a snap shot of some of the legislation, issues and activities that OFA has been engaged in over the past two years with the provincial government. We’ve provided input and offered amendments on several pieces of legislation including the Supporting Trails Ontario Act, Waste-Free Ontario Act, Conservation Authorities Act, Climate Change Mitigation and Low-carbon Economy Act, Agriculture Insurance Act, Great Lakes Protection Act, Invasive Species Act, and many others. This input is achieved through providing written submissions via the Environmental Bill of Registry system, letters to Ministers, MPPs and bureaucracy. Opportunities to appear before various Standing Committees have also brought OFA input to the government. In particular, OFA participated in providing input to Ontario’s budget, Bill 173, Jobs for Today and Tomorrow (Budget Measures) Act via invitation to the Standing Committee responsible for consultation on this bill. OFA has participated in government established advisory committees. The recently released Crombie Report – a 10-year review of four significant land use plans – had OFA Vice President Keith Currie present as a panel member. OFA has or is involved with similar committees on the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan, phosphorous concerns for Lake Erie algae, aggregate policy, livestock evaluation and others. Sometimes issues that have been ongoing for a long time come to the top during a majority mandate, and are addressed. Two issues illustrate this point. To deal with wildlife damages on the farm, OFA helped secure the use of relaxing cable restraints in the province and a spring bear hunting regulatory change. OFA’s work continues on the need for natural gas infrastructure across the province. Our advocacy is focused on an Ontario Energy Board hearing that’s looking at setting rates to enable an investment in rural pipeline infrastructure. The recent $100 million renewable natural gas program from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has spurred a working group to move this initiative. OFA is at the table. The recent cabinet shuffle will bring a few new players around the table, and OFA looks forward to working together with new and returning cabinet members on all the issues that impact the business of farming in Ontario. The next two years will remain busy with the power of a majority government behind them. The important legislation recently passed and the regulations arising from it will now come forward for implementation. OFA will continue its vigilance for the implementation coming. This must allow the number one industry in the province to not only remain competitive, but expand to a brighter future.

Caitlyn Baker, a student Page for the library’s Napanee Branch, recently enjoyed The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics – a very topical reading choice with the advent of this year’s summer Olympic Games. Caitlyn explains, “This book had the most intriguing synopsis and most captivating front cover I have ever seen, and this is what made me pick the book up. “One thing that makes non-fiction books occasionally boring and hard to read is that there is either no connection with the characters or that the subject is too general,” she says. “Fortunately, The Boys in the Boat was specific and intimate, not general. “For every boy on the team, author Daniel James Brown gave you a sense of where they came from and who they were, including the

V i s i t

role that they would play in the boat. The coaches, Tom Bolles and Al Ulbrickson, are also described in detail, and you really see how they connected with and encouraged the boys. George Pocock, one of the most

Catherine Coles Coles’ Notes sought-after shell builders of the time, also played a key role in helping Ulbrickson and the boys to understand what they needed to do in order to win. “The book talked about other rowing teams in some detail, Nazi Germany’s moves in Europe, a city coming together to support its children — its future, and the advancement of the Great Depression across the country. It really made a statement about the sheer

size of the world, how many things go on at once, and how they all culminate to form one future that you can’t see coming. This book was about more than rowing. It took on a world view, and that made it all the more special. “This book contains easyto-understand explanations for the many elements of rowing, so your experience, or lack thereof, regarding the sport will not hinder your reading experience,” Caitlyn adds. “If you enjoy sports biographies/autobiographies, this book may make a perfect next read!” You can reserve The Boys in the Boat in print or e-book formats at your branch of the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries or online at www.countylibrary.ca. Catherine Coles is the Manager of Library Services for Lennox and Addington County.
