hearing process. According to police, officers responded to a call at a Palace Road residence on May 9. Following this investigation, Pemberton, 23, of Napanee, was charged with neglecting to obtain assistance in child birth, contrary to the Criminal Code. She was arrested on May 11 in Banff, Alta., with assistance from the RCMP. She was later charged with first degree murder, concealing the body of a child and committing an indignity to a body.

ATV crash results in impaired driving arrest Beaver Staff

A local man will be in court next Tuesday to answer to impaired and other charges stemming from an incident early Friday morning. According to OPP, officers were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover accident involving an all-terrain vehicle shortly before 6 a.m. near the intersection of Beechwood Road and Johnson Side Road west of Napanee.

Police say the driver was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was found unconscious with a head injury. He was taken to L&A County General Hospital, where he was treated and released. As a result of a police investigation, a 49-year-old Napanee man was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, refusing to provide a breath sample and possession of marijuana.

History on film brings past to life Pinhole camera method adds to images BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

In a time when digital photography is improving seemingly by the day, photographer/historian Tod Ainsley opts for a antiquated methods to bring the past to life. Utilizing pinhole cameras, he travels to historical sites and tries to capture them as they would have looked when they were first built, some 200 years ago. One such project, titled ‘The Road to Freedom’ will be the subject of his presentation at Lennox and Addington County Museum this Tuesday at 7 p.m. His photographs will take guests back to the pre-Civil War days, when tensions were building and the uprising was just beginning. His collection includes photographs of historic sites that highlight the path slaves travelled as they attempted to flee the United States to the freedom of Canada. “Just the hazy, foggy, roughness capture that antiquity, that folded map that has been folded up and brought out after 200 years,” Ainsley says of using pinhole camera technology. “A lot of that came by accident. I didn’t try to contrive it.” Ainsley said by using a variation of the technology that was available at the time, he set out to show what some of these sites would have looked like to historical figures such as Andrew Jackson, Robert E. Lee and Abraham Lincoln. While he was pleased with the outcome, he admits that he wasn’t always enamoured with the obsolete technology. “First I balked,” he said of pinhole photography, noting he started using it because it was part of the curriculum he had to

teach during his day job. “But when I started seeing students’ images, I started seeing the antiquity come alive.” He has made some modifications to the pinhole cameras he uses, such as using developing chemicals to develop his film. Many of the cameras he uses while out in the field will also be on display next Tuesday. “Basically, the end result I want it to be different,” he added. While his methods of capturing history are unique, he says his main objective is to keep the story alive. Much of what happened during the pre-Civil War days has been forgotten or ignored over time he says, but it’s slowly making a comeback. “When it’s not a popular war, and the Civil War wasn’t a popular war, things over grow and get overrun,” said Ainsley. “With the underground railroad there’s a new awareness aloft. What they’re doing now is reviving a lot of the old architecture. They’re doing it in a very academic and objective way. They’re bringing it back to the way it was. It’s encouraging to see that.” During the exhibit guests will be able to wander the halls of the museum, which are adorned with Ainsley’s photos. Music from Nassau Mills, a trio which performs elements of bluegrass, blues, jazz and folk music, will accompany the exhibit. Tickets for the event are $3 each and available at the door. The exhibit is part of the Tuesday Night at the Museum, which offers a different guest speaker every month. Tuesday’s exhibit will be the last of the season, which will take a hiatus for the summer months before resuming in September. For more on the exhibit visit www.CountyMuseum.ca.

Senate reform front-and-centre The Senate of Canada is finding new ways to generate bad news. At first, it seemed as though just Mike Duffy was the ‘bad apple’. Then, more senators ran afoul of various watchdogs. Now, with an auditor-general’s report into senators’ spending suggesting that many senators, including senate leadership on both sides of the house, may have been engaging in questionable spending, Duffy’s case is appearing more and more to be the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Many pundits are suggesting that, if it already wasn’t inevitable that the future of the senate was going to be a major issue in the upcoming federal election, the AG’s report should certainly put it front-andcentre. That’s certainly as it should be. Of course, to say that senate reform is easier said than done is an understatement of remarkable proportions. The Supreme Court of Canada has determined that, in order to change how senators are selected, it would require the agreement of seven of 10 provinces representing more than half the population of the country. To abolish it, all 10 provinces, plus the House of Commons and the Senate, would need to be unanimously on-board with the plan. For any federal government to go down that road would most likely result in other constitutional issues being brought into the discussion — and as anyone who can remember those constitutional talks that took up the better part of the 1980s and the early 1990s, constitutional negotiations are anything but simple or easy (and in the case of Brian Mulroney, can lead nowhere… twice). But there’s another idea being floated these days as well: a referendum on senate reform. Some are even suggesting that the referendum be held on the same say as the federal election in October. That might be overly ambitious, but the idea of a senate reform referendum is something we can get behind. As challenging as senate reform might be, a referendum would provide a tangible expression of popular opinion on the issue. Although much would depend on what kind of question is put to voters, there’s no reason to expect that there wouldn’t be a majority of voters — and likely a significant majority of voters — who’d vote in favour of reforming the senate. The referendum wouldn’t be binding, but we don’t think that matters: it would still give our politicians the popular mandate to push ahead with constitutional negotiations to reform the upper chamber, or even get rid of it. Although NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair has gone so far as to say he’d open up talks with provincial premiers on the subject of senate reform if his party were to form government after the October election, none of the party leaders have seized on the idea of a referendum on senate reform. If our leaders are serious about senate reform, however, this is an option they seriously need to consider. The Senate as it functions now cannot stand. While there may be some interim measures the government of the day can take to improve the state of affairs in the Senate — and in this space, we’ve urged the government to take those modest steps — more profound reform is required. It’ll also take a lot of courage and political will to pull it off, too. Do our political leaders have either in adequate supply? We’ll have to wait and see.

Letter to the Editor

Future choices of Napanee Often as my husband and I walked by the closed Gibbard factory I have remarked to him how wonderful it would be if someone would install condos there. That way the historic building could be maintained intact (at least from the outside) enhancing the history of our town. If I was in charge, I would fill it with one-, two-, and threebedroom condos, each a different size and style. Admittedly, Napanee could have trouble enticing hundreds of new homeowners, but surely, historic apartments with a fantastic view of the Napanee River would sell. And with a wide variety of condos in such an unusual building it could attract everyone from widowed seniors to professional couples. I was so pleased to read the two articles that this is pretty much what is going to happen. I look forward to the gentrification of East Dundas Street. I was unclear from the articles where the townhouses were going to be built, but if they are on the sight of that empty boarded up gas station that nonetheless has a breathtaking view, then kudos. And then there was the highly original idea of installing a waterpower generation

plant through the centre of the complex. This is green generation that is far more pleasing than 300-foot-high windmills marring the Lake Ontario shoreline and all the natural beauty and history that has been destroyed as a consequence. The originality of the power generation could make Greater Napanee a leader in original projects. LondonWaste collects compost from the households of London once a week. With this compost enough power is generated for 72,000 homes in the London area for one year. It’s been mentioned by our council that they would like to have compost collection but it’s too expensive. What if Napanee could lure an entrepreneur to build a compost waste power plant? Obviously, it does not have to be the size of the one in London. And the plant could well wish to collect compost from many communities in our county, not just Greater Napanee. People dispose of waste that does not end up in a landfill, the town saves money on waste collection, and power is generated from that waste. It’s something to think about. Dawn Andrews, Greater Napanee

Why readers should consider geocaching Geocaching is best described as a real-world treasure hunt. There are millions of geocaches and geocachers all around the world but lucky for us locally, geocaching is especially booming in Lennox and Addington. So how does it work? Each cache is listed on a website and a player uses a GPS device (either a handheld GPS unit or a smartphone) to read and decipher the clues to find the actual treasure. It could take a long hike in the deep woods or a simple walk around the corner, depending on where you are and what you want to do that day. Once found, you sign a log, record it on the computer, and move on to the next cache. When you really think about it, geocaching is the perfect pastime for readers (aside from reading, of course). First, it’s a language-based game. There are often hints and clues hidden using creative language and riddles. Some of the clues are tricky enough to stump a crossword puzzle

expert but others are simple, straight-forward clues that can encourage early readers to work on their skills in a whole new environment. One thing is for sure: being a reader and a creative thinker will give you major edge. Second, each geocacher determines their own plan of action. Just like reading, you can pick the topics, the location, Coles’ the speed, the goals, and whether other people are involved. If you like adventure memoirs like Wild by Cheryl Strayed, for example, you could choose a trail of caches placed in a forest. If you are a mystery buff, you might choose caches involving cyphers and detective work. Like reading, geocaching offers something for anyone who is interested. Third, reading and geocaching are all about discovering worlds that may not be apparent to other people. There are treasures every-

where and while oblivious passersby go about their ordinary lives, you can be discovery mode. It is a good way to get out and about in nature or your community and see what’s around you. There have been libraries that have picked up on this connection between reading and geocaching, capitalizing on the idea by p l a c i n g caches in the stacks to Notes encourage reading and visits. It is an excellent idea: not only are cachers lured to the library but they are almost always required to do some creative thinking in order to find the actual location within the building. L&A Geocachers are in the process of setting up a cache in our very own library system — stay tuned for more information on that. If you would like to find out more about geocaching, you can learn from local geocaching expert Joe Tisdale who will be running a

The library has also begun to circulate maploaded GPS units. With your library card you can check one out and experience geocaching for yourself. This is all in preparation for the ‘Discover L&A County Geocaching Event’, which has the distinction of being one of only three events in Canada that currently hold the title of ‘MEGA’ status. Over a thousand people from across the globe will be attending. The 2015 event will be held on Aug. 21-22 in Napanee. OFA putting farmers first HE Ontario Federation of Agriculture’s first order of business is to champion the interests and issues affecting our members. Advocating and being a voice for Ontario farmers with government and policy makers is the key objective OFA delivers to members. Every OFA member also has access to an experienced team of Member Service Representatives that are on-the-ground staff available to help members with issues affecting farm business and rural life. And as we listen to members over the years, we also heard the request for adding extra value to membership to help ease the cost of doing business. The OFA has developed a robust Benefit Program to meet the needs of Ontario farm businesses by providing unique and exclusive benefits to members. It’s another way OFA works to deliver its overall mission to enable sustainable and prosperous farms. OFA’s Benefit Program is available to all members. Over the years, the Benefit Program has grown to include

ciples, the program continues to expand and improve, with new program partners continually added as OFA identifies member benefit needs. The OFA regularly uses surveys to check in with members to find out how the program is working. In 2014, OFA members reported saving an average of $545 a year through the Benefit Program — that’s more than double the savings since 2012. We want to keep this program as a valuable part of OFA membership. That’s why we’re asking members to complete an online survey during the month of June to gather more feedback on the Benefit Program. Visit www.ofa.on.ca to take the Benefit Program survey. Watch for survey results in the coming months and if you’d like to learn more about OFA’s program partners, check out the Benefit Program section of the website.

Partner companies are carefully selected and benefits negotiated on behalf of OFA members. OFA partners with companies that meet member needs, and deliver enhanced value and savings to all OFA members. The Benefit Program is directed by criteria established by the OFA Board of Directors. A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago June 16, 1965

n The Town of Napanee and the Township of Richmond agreed to work together on the provision of water and sewer services in the growing area on the western edge of Napanee. The area would be the site of the new L&A County General Hospital, which was currently under construction in Richmond Township immediately west of Napanee’s town limits. The water and sewer extension would also service the new Westdale residential subdivision development as well as the nearby Westdale Park Public School. n Most of Lennox and Addington would be ‘reunited’ in a new federal riding, FrontenacAddington. The new riding would still represent a significant amount of travel for whoever would become the MP for the district. The riding would include all of L&A except for Amherst Island, 14 townships in Frontenac County, five townships in Lanark County and 14 townships in Renfrew County. Before the redistribution, the southern part of the county was included in ‘Prince Edward-Lennox’ and the northern part of the county was included in ‘Hastings-Frontenac’.

35 Years Ago June 11, 1980

n Despite considerable opposition to the project, South Fredericksburgh Township was moving ahead with plans to build a new community centre and recreation facility. The newly-formed South Fred Ratepayers Association had come out firmly against the project. Not everyone, however, was against the project. The building advisory committee told South Fred council that it had received more than 143 donations or commitments to donate labour and/or material. The committee was meeting weekly to coordinate the project. n Jack Heath, president of the Ontario Liberal Party, said that he expected more electoral success for his party in eastern Ontario. He said that much depended on whether the current MPP for the local riding, Progressive Conservative James Taylor, would decide to stay on or to leave politics. Heath said that if Taylor were to stick around for another election campaign, the Liberals would give him a good challenge. However, he said if Taylor left, the riding would feature a “wide open” nomination battle, with good prospects to win the riding.

Rediscovering the Macpherson House Editor’s Note: The following is the first of an ongoing series highlighting tourist destinations in L&A County.

BY ROB PLUMLEY

Special to the Beaver Summertime fun is right around the corner here in Lennox and Addington County. I’m very excited for this opportunity to highlight some of the great things that there are to do here in our community. I know that it’s natural to sometimes overlook the things that are available right in our backyard in favour of faraway destinations up and down Highway 401. I have to admit that I’m guilty of doing this myself on occasion. My hope is that with this column

that I’ll be able to entice some of you to spend an afternoon, or maybe or a day or two, experiencing a few of the topics I’ll be writing about. For the last 10 or so years of being employed by L&A County, it has been my job to promote and support each of the places or activities that I'll be visiting this summer. While I’ve had dealings with each of the subjects in one way or another, my in-depth knowledge in most cases is still very limited. I’ll be heading to each of these locations with my ‘tourist hat’ on and will do my best to provide you with a true visitor experience. With that, let’s get started. The first stop on my tour of L&A County is the

storied Allan Macpherson House and Park. Located at 180 Elizabeth St. in Napanee, the historic building has proudly overlooked the banks of the Napanee River since the early 1800s. I was fortunate to recently receive a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the house and grounds in advance of its 2015 summer opening. It’s evident that a lot of work has been done to refresh both the building and surrounding property. I hadn’t before seen the outstanding view looking up from the river, and after doing so it is no surprise that Allan and Mary Macpherson chose this location to build their home. When entering the house, memories of my many Newburgh Public School visits from 25-plus years ago quickly came to mind. The rooms remain identical to how I imagine they were decorated when the Macpherson’s and his step-cousin John A. Macdonald roamed the halls. The many staircases give the home a classic charm and the smells from the five fireplaces are still faintly evident in the air. The property is an important part of our county’s proud history, and it’s comforting to know that this history will continue to be shared. The Macpherson House opens for the season with a number of performances of the play Elizabeth-Darcy during the June 19-21

The stately Allan Macpherson House and Park on Elizabeth Street in Napanee is waiting to be rediscovered this summer. weekend. A celebrated adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, Elizabeth-Darcy offers a very unique way to watch live theatre. The play takes audiences literally from room to room, as the building itself becomes an integral part of the performance. The actors perform each scene of the play in a different part of the house and spectators are ushered accordingly to watch the plot unfold. Space for the performances is limited. Showtimes are June 19 at 7 p.m., June 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and

$3 and you’ll also get access to the nearby L&A County Museum and Archives for that price. It’s going to be very busy this summer at the house as many workshops, demonstrations, music performances, child-friendly events and ‘parlour chats’ are scheduled throughout July and August. A full listing of activities are available on the website.

June 21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and are available for purchase at the L&A County Museum and Archives, located at 97 Thomas St. East in Napanee. You can also order online by visiting www.MacphersonHouse.ca. After the special weekend of theatre performances, the Macpherson House and Park officially opens for tours on June 23. The house is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Sundays and holidays, until the Labour Day weekend. Admission is only

Yarker Farmers’ Market returns Beaver Staff

The Yarker Farmers’ Market is back for its second year. The market will begin its season on June 20, and will run until Oct. 3. It takes place at Riverside United Church “This year’s market will be bigger and better, with

more vendors, extended hours, and lots of community enthusiasm. We look forward to seeing everyone there,” said Lynn Renaud, one of the event’s organizers and a member the church. Renaud and her fellow organizers said that the market was well supported by local residents in its

inaugural season last year. “It’s a great way for local people to get some of the fine produce that is grown in the area,” said Eric DePoe, a local chef and Yarker resident. Organizers say that students and volunteer market managers have been recruited to help the market run smoothly.

Though Mayor Gord Schermerhorn said he agrees with Lucas to an extent, he was not con-

vinced that an amendment was necessary, which led to a lengthy disagreement. At the same time, Lucas put forward his “friendly amendment” and Schermerhorn called the question on the motion for staff recommendation. Schermerhorn told Lucas he was out of order and called the question, which meant voting on the motion without Lucas’s amendments. Ward 1 Councillor Mike Schenk moved staff recommendation, which was seconded by Ward 2 Councillor Max Kaiser.

“Procedurally, I’m allowed to make a friendly amendment to a motion… You denied it.” Lucas said before making his recorded vote on staff recommendation. He voted against the motion. “You have talked long enough, you should have made your friendly amendment,” said Schermerhorn before voting in favour of the motion. All members of council except for Lucas and Ward 4 Councillor Carol Harvey voted in favour of the motion, which was carried.

“I support the recommendation Your Worship, I think it’s all being taken out of context. Surely to God, it is an open meeting; it is for the public input on our taxation policy. No matter how it’s worded in this paper, I’m quite comfortable that what we’re going to achieve that evening is going to happen. I’m getting sick and tired of listening to this debate. I think we go ahead with the way it’s worded,” said Ward 3 Councillor Roger Cole. “I think what they’re saying is that as councillors we don’t want to stick our

I’m getting sick of this debate,” Cole continued. Schermerhorn agreed council should move forward and let the meeting happen before debating it further. He also reminded members of council of what brought council to the position it’s in today. “I think we’re getting way off. Service area review

was started before this council. This council got elected; all of a sudden it wasn’t good enough. So we decided that now we’re going to do another public meeting to do a service area review, which will eventually lead to tax policy (and) possibly tax policy changes. And now we’re getting into this great debate on this whole thing,” said Schermerhorn. “I think you’re taking that wrong,” Schermerhorn said to Lucas, stating he feels the wording will allow for discussion on taxation and service area review.

Concert series continues with The Good Lovelies BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

For the fourth time, the Good Lovelies will take the stage in Tamworth, this time bringing new material from a newly released album and a new instrument. As part of the Tamworth-Erinsville Community Development Committee concert series, the Good Lovelies will be visiting Tamworth after touring in Europe to perform fresh music from their newest release. Kerri Ough, one of the members making up the Good Lovelies, said the new album shows musical growth within the group. “You’ll hear a maturity, or an evolution in sound. If you’ve been listening to us for the last seven or eight years then you’ll still hear us but you’ll hear us eight years later – growing up, changing, and with life experiences behind us, said

Ough. For the first time, the Good Lovelies hired a band to work with them throughout the entire process of making of the new record, Burn the Plan. “The CD has a bigger sound than some of our older records have. We hired a band of four people beyond us to play the drums, electric guitar, and to fill out the songs in a way that we haven’t done before. It made sense for these songs, said Ough. “The music itself isn’t exactly in keeping with what we were doing six years ago but to me, the music is very much Good Lovelies because of our voices. The new album is made up of 13 original songs and was released May 26. Ough said they are excited to perform some of their new songs to their loyal fans in Tamworth but will also be sure to bring back some favourites. “There’s always going to

be the stuff that kind of sticks with us from the beginning. I’m very grateful for all that stuff as well. It’s fun to move forward but it’s also fun to play some hits that people know and will play along to, she said. Ough said Tamworth has become one of their favourite places to perform. “Every time we’ve played, the show has been packed, she said. “The audience that returns there has become family. And there are a lot of other people from nearby areas that are being pulled to the area, who didn’t know that venue existed before, I think that’s really cool. It’s a really neat thing that (organizer) Mark Oliver has created there — not just for our benefit for this concert in July, but for all of these people who look at our tour and say, ‘Tamworth, where’s that? Tamworth – that’s the perfect spot between Whitby and Ottawa, so maybe we can ask to play there.’

Ough has recently learned to play the omnichord, which is an electronic musical instrument made by the Suzuki Musical Instrument Corporation. She will be bringing her omnichord to Tamworth and play it during the performance. “I’ve introduced the omnichord into our band this year. It’s an electronic

auto harp type of thing. It’s an instrument that David Suzuki has branded‌ I love it so much I wrote a song about it. One of the songs on the new record is called, ‘In the Morning,’ and I like playing that song because it’s a completely new instrument for the stage,â€? said Ough. Other favourites the Good Lovelies like to per-

form live are ‘Don’t Hold Back,’ and ‘When the City Settles.’ The Good Lovelies is comprised of Ough, Susan Passmore and Caroline Brooks and will be accompanied by bass player Steven Zsirai when they perform in Tamworth on July 11 at the Tamworth Legion. The show will start at 8 p.m. and tickets are $40.

They were normally deposited into the mows by means of ‘sling ropes’, which were lifted to the barn roof, then laterally carried along a track and dumped into place. Three methods of harvesting hay later co-existed as more up-to-date approaches were adopted. One was the baler, which was invented in 1860, first drawn by horses, later by a tractor. As its name suggests, it packed the hay

tightly into square bundles, and dropped them into the field. They were then taken to the barn and dumped into the mows in the traditional way. But, by and large, for many decades, these were too pricey for the average farm, and they were mainly utilized in the same manner of custom threshing machines. Another, which appeared here and there in the 1940s, was the buck rake. Similar to a front-end loader on a tractor, but several times bigger, it was often attached to the rear of a truck (usually a threequarter-ton size). In reverse gear, the driver backed into

the windrow, gathered the hay until the ‘scoop’ was full. Then, away he went to the barn with his load for deposit in the mow. But the most popular labour-saving device was the hay loader (above). It was attached closely to the rear of a wagon, and essentially, its large curved spiked conveyor belt rotated on a huge drum. It then continued up what looked like a very wide water slide. It carried the hay with it, and dumped it on the back of the wagon as it started on its return journey down, ready to repeat the cycle. Perhaps ‘labour saving’ is a misnomer. With that green stuff coming at him ten forks full a minute, needing to be ‘built’ as an even load overall, the labourer felt, for the most part, that the work only shifted from heaving it from the ground up, to spreading it around as it was forced on him. More economical balers, of both the square and round variety, have long replaced these ‘primitive’ operations. But the hay loader was viewed as quite a revolution when it first was placed on the market.

The Return Of The King

Gibbard turbine plan put to public New residential development also discussed

BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

A public meeting Tuesday evening at the Gibbard Furniture Factory regarding an application for a water turbine attracted a steady crowd. Though the front office and sidewalk along Gibbards were filled with people attending the two-hour meeting, many of those people were more interested in the Gibbard condo redevelopment proposal than the water project. Outlines and project plans for both the FIT water turbine application, as well as for the condo and townhouse Gibbard site development, were made available during Tuesday’s meeting. Ben Doornekamp, of Abna Investments Ltd., and Sandy Berg, Gibbard development project manager for Doornekamp Construction Ltd., answered questions. The front office, which was open for viewing and questions, was filled wall-to-wall with people, as well as an overflow on the sidewalk. “We’re breaking ground this summer,” said Doornekamp, regarding the condo/townhouse development project. “If pre-sales go well for this phase and other phases then it will just continue. We’re going to work our way around here just in phases but if it goes well it will just continue. If it’s slow then it will just be in a phase approach.” However, if the FIT program is approved then that will take priority over the building project. “Part of the program is that we have to start it within a year. They don’t just hand you the contract and say, ‘Go do what you want.’ Within a year we have to start construction, within two years it has to be done. So it would have to

go first, plus it would have to go first because it goes under the parking garage. It’s the deepest, and then everything else is on top,” Doornekamp said. However, the turbine project wouldn’t mean construction of condos and townhouses would stop. Construction of both projects would move forward, but the FIT project would have a tighter deadline. “If we don’t get a FIT contract, which allows us to put power back in the grid, generators aren’t going in. The building project is still going to go ahead, but we’re here today for the generator because if we don’t have the town and the public’s approval, then it’s useless,” Doornekamp said. Even though wind and solar projects are considered more popular than water as a renewable energy projects when it comes to FIT plan approvals, Doornekamp said he is confident they will receive a FIT contract. “The Ministry of Natural Resources has determined all the best catchment areas in the province and this is (one of the) best ones in the province,” said Doornekamp. The water turbine would not be noisy and would barely be noticeable, he said. Most of the piping would be underground and only a 14x14 building will be visible alongside the water. Doornekamp noted that the small building might not even be visible once final designs are approved. “You would never even know it was there. You walk by on the street and you don’t even hear it. As far as water rules go, whatever goes over the falls we’re not allowed to ever change it,” he said, explaining there would be no impact to the falls with the installation of a water turbine.

The 500 kilowatt turbine would generate enough power to operate 200-300 homes. That energy will be fed back into the grid. Doornekamp said with the funds provided to the company for sending energy back into the grid, 15 per cent will go to Quinte Conservation and five per cent will go to the Town of Greater Napanee. “I’ve told everybody that the five per cent we give to the town, we want to have a say where it goes. We want to make sure it goes to hospitals and rinks and whatever it may be. We don’t want it going to roads and things like that, no offense to the roads,” said Doornekamp. As for the condos and townhouses, prices will range between $300,000$500,000 and there will be about 15 different styles to choose from. There will be eight buildings in total, which will be phased in by demand. “It all depends on demand. We’ve had lots of interest,” he added. Complete designs and costs should be compiled by late July.

Rugby Hawks go 1-2 at OFSAA NDSS just misses out on consolation finals

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

single point was the difference between moving on to the OFSAA consolation finals or the end a dream season for the NDSS Golden Hawks senior boys rugby team. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they wound up on the wrong side of a 15-14 match, falling to Banting Memorial H.S. in Friday’s consolation semifinals in Stoney Creek. Once down 10-0 at the close of the first half, the Hawks made a game of it late, scoring their second try with just a minute left in the game to cut the deficit to 15-14. That’s as close as they’d get. “It was really competitive, a top cheese of a game” said Hawks head coach Jim McKinney. “Both teams went after it and you just have to tip your hat.” Napanee wound up 1-2 in the tournament, which

A

featured the top high school teams in the province. After dropping the opener 19-8 to Oakville-Trafalgar, they ran the risk suffering a very quick exit in the doubleknock out tournament. “You get to the tournament and there’s a lot of parity,” said McKinney. “There are a lot of really good schools there. The boys were really not interested in being finished after two games. You could see (team captains) Jeremy Martin and Adam Weatherhead were very verbal in the warm ups saying ‘let’s not let our season end here.’” The boys in gold and navy blue responded in a big way, routing Brebeuf College 22-0. Ryan Cudd, Weatherhead, Brayden Harp and Ben Breeden each scored a try while Liam Flindall-Hanna kicked a convert. The game was a nice rebound from the opener, when the team showed plenty of rust following a 10

day layoff between games. “I felt we were a little slow coming out of the blocks against Oakville,” said McKinney. “We played much better in the second half and actually scored eight points to make it respectable.” Scoring the try was Connor MacDonald. He was among the second line players the Hawks rolled when the game got out of hand, making sure all players got a chance to experience an OFSAA game. He made the most of his opportunities, scoring his first try of the season. Overall McKinney said he was pleased with the team’s OFSAA’s appearance, saying the team played well. Repeating an OFSAA appearance next year will be tricky as the team will graduate nine players. That said McKinney says he sees plenty of talent on the junior team that could step up and fill those roles.

Falcons silence Hawks’ bats Frontenac blanks NDSS 2-0 in KASSAA semifinals BY ADAM PRUDHOMME

Outstanding Hawks

Staff Reporter

toried Hall of Famer Willie Keeler is perhaps best known for his simple yet effective advice for playing the game of baseball: ‘hit it where they ain’t.’ While easier said than done, that advice would have benefited the NDSS Golden Hawks immensely last Thursday, as they fell 20 to the Frontenac Falcons in the KASSAA semifinals at Kingston’s Megaffin Park. The Hawks had no trouble squaring up the baseball throughout the game, they just so happened to be hit sharply right at the Falcon defenders. At the close of the game the Hawks had just two hits to show for their efforts. “Everybody put the ball in play,” said Hawks head coach Daryl Sheffield. “If you can do that you can draw some errors or make some hard throws but Frontenac executed when they had to and that was the difference. We only had two hits and that’s kudos to their defense.”

S

Adam Prudhomme-Staff

NDSS’ athletic department honoured its top athletes on Tuesday, with Colsen Bertrand and Taigan Ardern (pictured above) winning the C.S. Froud Trophy, given to the top male and female athletes. The Hawks had plenty to celebrate, as six of its teams appeared in a KASSAA final while 13 athletes reached the finals in individual sports. Other major award winners were Walker Campbell and Michaela Lasher (Eric Bartlett Award) and Kylie Bailey and Jeremy Martin (Hart Award for overall contributions to NDSS athletics).

The Falcons reached Hawks’ starter Josh Murphy for a run in the bottom of the third courtesy a bit of gutsy base running. With a runner on second the Falcons batter laced a hard hit ball to right. The relay throw home from second baseman Ryan Bothwell looked to have the runner DOA but the ball popped out of catcher Keegan Scott’s glove when the runner bump into him without a slide. The Hawks escaped further damage when, with runners on first and third, they turned a nifty double play to end the inning, getting a force at first and catching a runner between third and home. Despite some hard hit balls the Hawks didn’t get their first base runner until the fourth inning when Hudson Sheffield reached on an error. Keegan Scott followed that up with a solid base hit to put runners on first and second with just one out. They’d end up stranded however as the next Hawks batters went down on strikes. The Falcons tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. After a close play on a

steal attempt at third was ruled safe, the Falcons batter lifted a sac fly deep enough to score the game’s second and ultimately final run. The Hawks had one last chance in the sixth when Brody Ford led off with a base hit, but the Hawks couldn’t cash it. He was lifted for a pinch runner who was promptly nailed trying to steal second. They went down in order in the seventh to officially end their season as semifinalists for a second straight year. “We had a good run of bats showing up, just not today,” said Sheffield. “I give my guys credit, they swung the bats, they didn’t do anything differently than when they were successful, Frontenac just made the plays.” The loss signalled what could be the end of six players’ high school baseball careers, five of which were with the inaugural club that launched the NDSS program three seasons ago. They were Scott, Sheffield, Murphy, Bothwell, Matt Davis and Chase Dowdle. That’s potentially half of the 12 player roster.

I was surprised when we were 0-3 to start, but the three teams we lost to all made the playoffs.” Sheffield also gave credit to three players he said played as ‘red shirts’ the entire season- Grade 9 and 10s who travelled and practiced with the varsity team but didn’t see any game action. They agreed to train with the team this year in order to get ready for next season. Though there will be a turn over with many key pieces moving on, this core group played a big role in establishing the sport which had been absent from NDSS. “There’s a baseball culture at the school now that wasn't there before," said Sheffield. "We've only been doing this for three years. To get to the semifinals two years in a row is a good thing, we just need to jump that barrier." As for the Falcons, they were scheduled to take on

For the Red team, it marked the second year in a row they emerged as champions in the tournament. They threw and hit their way to a perfect 6-0 record at the tournament, beating Cobourg (11-1), Oakville (43) Port Perry (12-1) and Kawartha (7-2) in round robin play. They crossed paths with their sister squad, Napanee Blue, for a thrilling 11-10 extra inning win in the semifinals. That win put them through to the finals where they again needed extra innings to defeat the Oakville Angels 19-15. “It was a great experience for the girls,” said Express head coach Scott Morrow. “Not only did every single girl contribute in a big way, but we also had to battle back many times in several games to accomplish what we did.” The Express Novice Girls–Red take to the field again this Saturday in a tournament in Napanee

out a tight 3-2 win over Port Perry's senior team. The Express Blue then found themselves up against Kitchener who were able to secure a few key hits to pull ahead 6-2. Following the loss the Express Blue faced Kawartha Lakes’s seniors team. Gracie Hearns, pitching her fourth game of the day, was able to hold the score to 2-1 with stellar defensive play by the rest of the team. With a 3-1 record the Express met up with the other Express team with the winner advancing to the gold medal game. After dropping the close semifinal match with their sister club, the Express Blue were unable to gain momentum and fell to Kitchener Klassics in the bronze medal game, placing fourth in the tournament.

Working with a short bench, with one of their two pitchers unavailable due to injury, the Express knew they would have to pull together as a team to stay competitive. With a rain out on Friday night and a four game schedule on Saturday morning the girls were on their toes defeating Peterborough 18-0 to start the day. KIMMETT - In loving memory of a dear son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, Rob, June 14, 2009. If we could have a lifetime wish And one dream that could come true, We would pray to God with all our hearts, Just see and speak to you, A thousand words would not bring you back, We know, we have tried And neither will a million tears, We know because we have cried, You left behind our broken hearts And precious memories too, But we have never wanted memories, We only wanted you. Forever in our hearts, Mom, Dad, Tyler, Ryden, Devon, Jason, Shawn, Liz, Cadence, Oliver, Annette and Jack. Ontario Releases First Annual Local Food Report

Ontario has launched its first-ever Local Food Report, which measures the province's progress in bringing local food to more tables across the province. In 2013, Ontario passed the Local Food Act, 2013 which aims to increase awareness of local food, nurture local food markets and foster vibrant food-based economies across the province. The Act also commits to an annual report on the province's local food activities, goals and accomplishments.

The first ever Local Food Report highlights some of the actions taken by the province and the agri-food sector to promote and celebrate local food this year, including: • Setting food literacy goals to increase the number of Ontarians who know what local foods are available, who know how and where to obtain local foods and who know how to prepare meals made with local food. • Providing a tax credit to farmers for making food donations to food banks and student nutrition programs. • Piloting a fundraising initiative that helps the province's schools to fundraise by selling Ontario-grown fruits and vegetables to families. • Distributing more than 800,000 copies of Foodland Ontario's local food recipe calendar in 2014. The inaugural report will help the province track future progress in meeting its local food goals. Supporting local food and strengthening the province's agri-food sector is part of the government's economic plan for Ontario. The four-part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people's talents and skills, making the largest public infrastructure investment in Ontario's history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement savings plan.

QUICK FACTS The Local Food Act, 2013, is part of a broader strategy intended to increase demand for Ontario food, creating more jobs and boosting the agri-food industry’s contributions to the economy. Ontario’s agri-food sector supports farmers, communities and the economy which employs more than 780,000 Ontarians and contributes over $34 billion to the province’s economy. To raise awareness of local food, the Local Food Act proclaims the first week of June each year as Local Food Week. For more than 38 years, Foodland Ontario has connected with families on how to recognize, prepare and love local foods.

IMPORTANT NOTICE Effective JULY 1, 2015, the price of garbage bag tags will increase to $2.50 per tag. Why is the cost increasing? The cost of operating Loyalist Township’s landfills has increased substantially, while the cost of garbage bag tags has not increased since 2005. Increased operational costs have been reflected in properrty tax rates, which are borne by all Loyalist Township properrty owners, even those who actively participate in waste diversion effforts by means of recycling and composting. The use of bag tag revenues reduces the properrty tax rate, redirecting more of waste management costs directly to users.

2005 Operating cost for Loyalist To ownship landfills: $656,000

sudoku Metro Creative Graphics LAST WEEK’S ANSWER

2015 Operating cost for Loyalist To ownship landfills: $975,000

What are some of the costs of operating Loyalist’s landfills? Equipment and fuel, the Township’s waste collection contract, staffing, capital improvements to the landfill facilities, and environmental monitoring in the landfill areas all contribute to the cost of operating landfills. Does an increased cost mean the landfill will accept more types of waste (eg., wood, construction materials)? No. We are restricted to the types of waste mandated in our Certificate of Approval, issued by the Ministry of the Environment & Climate Change. I have $2 tags left over. Are they still valid? Yes. The orange tags will be accepted until the end of 2015. Where can I find more information? Please visit the Loyalist Township website, www.loyalist.ca/go/bagtags or call 613-386-7351, ext. 116. Note to landfill users: Tipping fees have increased to $125.00 per tonne, with a minimum charge of $15 per visit (not including Free Large Item Disposal Opportunities - FLIDO), as per the Miscellaneous Fees By-law 2015-057. If you are a person with a disability and need Loyalist T To ownship information in another format, please contact 613-386-7351, ext. 100, or email info@loyalist.ca.

The event, which serves as a fundraiser for Lennox and Addington SOS, featured seven homes and three gardens this year. Prior to Saturday’s main event, members of SOS’s Adult Day Program took a bus trip on Thursday to see some of the gardens.

Create a real estate team before buying a home Buying or selling property is a complex process, but it’s not a lonely one. Real estate experts estimate that a person could speak to as many as 14 different professionals during the process. “There are many players involved in a real estate transaction, from bankers to lawyers or even surveyors, so it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, says Patricia Verge, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA). “In some cases, speaking with a professional is vital to the procedure, so my job as a Realtor is to help connect clients with the right person at the right time to make the sale or purchase as smooth as possible. These are some of the professionals you may speak to during the home buying or selling transaction:

• Lender or mortgage broker – Meet with your financial expert to see how much home you can afford, or if you are selling and want to move to a larger home, how much more you can afford each month. • Insurance provider: You’ll need property insurance when you finalize the mortgage, so speak to an insurance broker or agent before the sale closes. • Home inspector: OREA strongly advises every home buyer to have a professional home inspection before buying. Get a few names of reputable inspectors so you’re ready to make that call when you want them to inspect the house. More information is available at www.wedothehomework.ca.
