Patriotic partiers will have plenty of choices for where to celebrate Canada’s 149th birthday on July 1 with a full lineup of events taking part throughout Lennox and Addington County and Deseronto. In Napanee, the fun gets started bright and early at 9 a.m. with the 16th annual Show and Shine car show, featuring more than 200 classic vehicles at the Strathcona Paper Centre. That will be followed with family-filled events from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. complete with a bouncy castle, face painting, horse drawn wagon rides and cake. Down at the Springside falls Softball Napanee will hold heir annual rubber duck race, starting at 1 p.m. The day in Napanee will wrap up with an outdoor dance party featuring D.J. Digital Mike and fireworks at dusk. The event is sponsored by OPG Celebrate Canada fund. Down by the lake, the village of Bath will host the largest Canada Day celebration in the region. Starting with the firemen’s breakfast at 9 a.m., the day will feature an art show and sale, historical reenactments, live music, a fish fry and vendors. The renowned parade will march from Finkle Shore’s Park starting at 1 p.m. and make its way to Bath Public School on County Rd. 7. In Newburgh, children can decorate their bikes, wagons or strollers and take part in a parade through the village, starting at 5 p.m. From 6 to 9 p.m. there will be live music in the Conservation Area followed by fireworks at dusk. Tamworth’s celebration gets started early with a barbecue at the fire station from 8-10 a.m., followed by an open house at the Tamworth Hotel. The annual parade will get started at 4:30 p.m., moving along its traditional route.

‘41 Sale’ planned for Canada Day weekend

BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

There are big yard sales, and then there are big yard sales. The sale Robert O’Dare is planning for the Canada Day weekend falls into the big category — from Napanee to Pembroke big. The ‘41 Sale’ is designed to allow vendors — any kind of vendors — to use the County Road/Highway 41 corridor as a venue to sell their goods, and make some money. O’Dare is borrowing the idea behind the ‘Highway 127 Corridor’ sale, which stretches from northern Ohio to Alabama. Since he began drumming up support for the sale

this past winter, O’Dare said the idea has been wellreceived. “I’ve had an incredibly positive response because, everybody loves yard sales, right?” he said. “I’m just hoping that people will participate and I’m hoping that it becomes an annual thing and gets better each year.” There are no real restrictions on those taking part. Vendors could include private individuals or businesses. It could also include organizations using the event as a fundraiser. Even whole communities can get in on the act. “They just do their own thing. I’m just putting out the word and trying to organize it. If churches or charitable organizations want to do fundraising, that’s great,” he said.

“I’ve had a lot of response, being contacted by people, (who are) basically curious about how they can participate,” he added. “I’ve contacted Legions and Lions Clubs and churches. I’ve spent a lot of time on the phone and online.” O’Dare says that he’s also distributed 1,500 flyers between Napanee and Pembroke. “I’ve had good response, but having good response and actually getting people to participate is a whole other thing. However, yard sales aren’t ‘high tech’, you just have a yard sale… I hope that people actually carry it through,” he said. For more information, contact O’Dare at 613-3361270 or by e-mail at moosemeet2@hotmail.com.

When he looked outside, “(the wind) just bent everything over 45 degrees.” “I went down to my basement,” said fellow local resident Bill Hunter. “I didn’t know what it was going to develop into.” Fleming said the storm seemed to come in from the north west. He said the storm clouds looked like “huge rock cuts coming at you.” As of Tuesday afternoon, repair crews were still working to restore power to the area. According to Hydro One, more than 36,000 customers lost service across Ontario during Monday night’s storm.

stay well, or physically. When there are times when they need a little more service, we’re there. I think with this being such a ‘senior’ community, it’s really demonstrated that just a little bit of support can keep a senior going a lot longer in their home. It could just be a meal or coming out for a little exercise.” The organization has grown substantially, too. “We are now at a point where there are 25-30 staff, there are 300 volunteers, we have memberships, we have corporate sponsorships,” she said. McDonald said that L&A SOS now does more for seniors in rural areas of the county. “We have done that through partnerships, so our partnership has been with L&A County, and we agree to help service more rural individuals and they help fund that. So, that’s been a wonderful partnership that we’ve had for the last few years. We hope that continues, because as we can branch out into the smaller areas, we’re keeping in their home. That’s what we’re all about, that’s what the organization is.” Keeping seniors in their homes is what the Ministry of Health wants the agency

Lennox and Addington Seniors Outreach Services’ 40th anniversary party at Conservation Park on Tuesday wasn’t just a celebration, it was a ‘thank you’. “I think we just want to celebrate with the community, because it was the community — a group of seniors — who got Seniors Outreach Services going. So, we wanted to acknowledge their commitment and where their commitment has taken the organization,” said L&A SOS’s Wendy McDonald. The event featured several demonstrations of activities offered by the agency, along with a barbecue and cake. McDonald acknowledged that the organization has come a long was in the last four decades. “I think the biggest changes are, because of the new programming, we are now doing so much more for seniors,” she said. “Our tag phrase now is ‘open doors to wellness and independence.’ We start by keeping seniors well; we keep them as well (as we can) through the exercises, through volunteering. have to fundraise. We love our donations and our corporate sponsorships, because those help keep us going to,” she said.

L&A SOS got one of those donations on Tuesday. The Reidville-Camden East Women’s Institute presented the agency with $500.

Understanding NHL expansion

Summer thrills and chills Genre fiction seems to have its heyday during the summer months. This summer, in particular, we can look forward to reading many great releases in the mystery, thriller and horror genres. Stephen King has a new book out titled End of Watch, I Let You Go by Clare MacIntosh is being called “the next big thriller blockbuster”, and rising literary star Mary Kubica is back with Don’t You Cry… but there is still so more to come! The following are a few upcoming releases that I have recently read and would suggest to those looking for some thrilling and/or chilling reads this summer. All is Not Forgotten by Wendy Walker is a psychological mystery with a narrative style that felt unique and refreshing, although perhaps not for every reader. Set in a small, affluent town in Connecticut, the story follows the aftermath of a brutal attack on a teenage girl who was drunk at a party. Jenny’s horrified parents opt to preemptively treat her imminent PTSD with an experimental drug that will erase her memory of the assault. A victim with no memory of a crime certainly complicates a police investigation… but the drug wasn’t

completely effective anyway. The emotional memories linger in Jenny and the family’s psychiatrist, the unusual narrator of the story, must work to piece together the puzzle of her memory all the while protecting his own

Catherine Coles Coles’ Notes interests. At times disturbing, this novel is a slow burn mystery as well as an interesting character study. The ending, although it provides an unexpected twist, didn’t quite do it for me but getting there was reminiscent of reading Defending Jacob by William Landay. All is Not Forgotten will be released mid-July. The Binding by Nicholas Wolff is set in (another) affluent, small town in New England. Equal parts police procedural and supernatural horror, this novel follows a psychologist named Nat who is beckoned to visit a teenage girl who insists that she is dead. Nat diagnoses the girl with Cotard Delusion (also called ‘Walking Corpse Syndrome’), which is apparently a real-life albeit very rare mental disorder. He second

guesses himself, however, in light of the bizarre murders in town that appear to be related. This book has great atmosphere but it is pretty disjointed and has far too many characters. That said, horror fans can’t argue with the premise of zombies roaming a wintery New England setting. The Binding is due out at the end of the month. Watching Edie by Camilla Way is a story of a toointense female friendship (think Single White Female but set in the UK). Chapters alternate between past and present. Heather, chubby and insecure, narrates from the point of view of the girls’ high school days. Edie, beautiful and popular, narrates the present day. The friends had a falling out at some point but the reader doesn’t find out why until well into the book. One thing is certain: present-day Edie is terrified of Heather – and Heather has just shown up on her doorstep. Watching Edie is a solid psychological thriller and a great choice for fans of Harriet Lane and readers who loved Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes. It will be released in early August.

To paint or to stain? Painting and staining are two different finishing processes. Both are equally effective in creating fine wood finishes, but they differ in that one coats and the other penetrates. Both products are readily available at most hardware stores, and both are do-it-yourself friendly. Understanding the differences in these products can help you decide which product is best for you. For the most part, stain is the same as paint. It is composed of pigments and a vehicle, ingredients that perform the same functions as they do in paint. Both stain and paint provide protection and add colour, but that is where the similarities stop. Most of us notice the difference between paint and stain when we open the can because stain is always thinner than paint. When you apply stain, you will notice that it tends to soak into the surface, whereas paint sits on the surface, colouring the substrate, or to become part of the substrate as colour. In contrast, paint sits on the surface, building a thin film. Paint is often more expensive per gallon, is more time-consuming to apply, and always should be applied over a primed surface. Paint tends to provide colour uniformity, has various degrees of sheen, and has a broader colour range. Painting preparations differ greatly from staining preparations. When preparing a surface for painting, you need not consider the colour of the natural wood or surface. You can patch the wood with wood filler or wood patches since paint will completely cover the surface, hiding imperfections. Paint usually also requires priming for best adhesion. Always use waterbased primer with waterbased paint and oil-based with oil-based. However, stain has its advantages also. It is easily applied and recoated, and surface preparation is usually minimal. With stains, primers are not always required. A few stains are meant for concrete, but most stains are meant to be used on wood. Many of today’s homes feature rough-sawn and textured siding and

Polyurethane is a readily available sealer that comes in gloss and satin finishes for applying to stained wood. Water-based stains are used when quick drying is necessary. Oil-based products do not dry as quickly as water-based products. However, oil-based products will not cause wood to swell and can actually penetrate wood, helping to preserve it. Additionally, stain can be purchased as a gel or liquid application. Paint, on the other hand, is also sold in waterand oil-based formulations. Paint can also be purchased as a latex or non-latex product, depending on your need and application. Latex paint is slightly flexible when dry and is less likely to crack. Non-latex paint is a bit more brittle but effective in situations where sunlight and weather conditions will not affect the product. Paint is always opaque, and stain is almost always transparent and sometimes semitransparent. Both paint and stain are available already tinted, and most stores that sell paint will mix colours to your specifications. Paint must always be brushed, rolled or sprayed on. Since this product is intended to coat the surface of your projects, then you must apply large amounts in even strokes. Stain can be wiped on, brushed on or sprayed on, depending on your preference. Spraying either product will provide a more even application. Brushing will produce brush marks in paint but not in stain. Generally, stain any wood surface if you would prefer the wood grain to remain visible. Paint surfaces such as drywall or wood that does not require a display of wood grains. Don’t be afraid to go bold with colour in paint or stain. Experiment with colour combinations. Some combinations that you least expect to work, look fantastic together. Happy painting!

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago June 22, 1966 ■ Land values in Napanee and the surrounding area were seeing a jump in value, according to a report to Lennox and Addington County council. The information was contained in part of a study presented by county assessor James Maloney. The assessor recommended increasing the assessment of Napanee, Richmond and North Fredericksburgh townships to keep pace with the rising value of building lots. He said the value of building lots in and around Napanee had been increasing steadily for about two years. ■ Members of the Lennox and Addington County Federation of Agriculture were given a quick explanation into how the new Ontario Milk Marketing Board would function at the group’s annual summer picnic. George McLaughlin of Beaverton, the chair of the OMMB, said that the board is empowered to set prices farmers will receive for thir milk, direct milk into any category of processing and create a transportation system for trucking milk. “The board owns the milk from the time it is bought by it from the farmer until it reaches the market,” he said.

30 Years Ago June 25, 1986 ■ Sod was turned for the new Napanee Kinsmen Park, located near the Napanee River near the south ends of Napier and Hessford streets. John Alkenbrack, outgoing president of the Napanee Kinsmen Club, said the park would have a volleyball court, a pavillion, a horseshoe pit, boardwalk, playground and picnic area. Construction was expected to cost $65,000, and would take about 19 weeks to complete, said Napanee Clerk Jack McNamee. The Kinsmen club was contributing $20,000, the provincial government $20,000 and the federal government $25,000. ■ The Concerned Parents Coalition of L&A County called on the county to establish a subsidized day-care program. The program would involve a purchase-ofservice agreement between L&A County and a day-care facility of the parent’s choice. The coalition suggested that, under a 20/80 cost-sharing formula between local government and the Ministry of Community and Social Services, a child could be subsidized to go to a licensed day care facility.

Memoir Monday to feature post-war love story 93-year-old author and activist Harry Leslie Smith to discuss his book, Love Among the Ruins BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

Harry Leslie Smith’s latest book is more than a memoir — it’s a love story. This Monday, Smith will be discussing that book, Love Among The Ruins, at the Napanee library branch as part of the ‘Memoir Monday’ series. Smith, a 93-year-old author, commentator and activist who splits his time between Belleville and his native England, was a member of the Royal Air Force when he was stationed in post-war Hamburg, Germany in 1945. It was in that setting that Smith found the love of his life. He said he was working on a road near a black market in the war-torn city

when he spied his future wife, Friede. “I saw this girl and I thought, ‘My God, how beautiful that girl is. I have got to get to know her.’ When she finished her business with the man in front of her, with such dignity, I followed her and I caught up and asked if I could walk with her for a little while,” he said. He said she told him he “seemed harmless enough”, and let him accompany her. “She let me carry her bag,” he continued. “When we got to where she lived, an apartment building — it was way out of the city of Hamburg — we arranged to see (each other) the next day.” Although that chance meeting would spark a lifelong love affair, it wasn’t all smooth sailing from that point on. In a city still reeling from the effects of the Second

World War, and confronted by a British government that was seemingly determined to keep the two apart, Smith said nothing came easily for the couple. In fact, Smith was officially forbidden from being seen with Friede, thanks to a ‘fraternization ban’ imposed by the British military. “You weren’t allowed to accompany or walk side-by-side with a German woman, night or day. If they caught anyone side-by-side with a German woman, they made sure you were brought in and charged and were held in camp for probably a month,” he said. It took two years of battling the British government before he’d be given permission to marry her. The backdrop for this love story, too, makes it all the more harrowing. The cit-

izens of Hamburg, living in the destruction left by the war, were in desperate straits, often selling precious valuables to supplement the meagre food rations they were receiving. “The very appearance of Hamburg when I got there, it looked as though the Soviets had just destroyed the whole country. It was just frightening,” said Smith. He suggests that the lengths to which he went to be with Friede makes for a compelling read. “I think because there is so much humanity in it. It is a book that touches the heart. There’s laughter in it. There’s poignant misery and unhappiness. It touches many people’s feelings,” he said. Newsweek named the book one of the most important non-fiction stories pub-

lished in 2015. The couple would leave Hamburg in 1948, and make a life in Great Britain and Canada. Friede passed away in 1999. Since then, Smith has not only authored four books — including Love Among the Ruins and the critically-acclaimed Harry’s Last Stand — he’s made a name for himself as a commentator and activist. His columns are regularly published in U.K.’s The Guardian and a number other publications; his twit-

ter feed boasts just less than 70,000 followers. “I just persisted, that’s all,” he said, explaining that while he was a lifelong writer, becoming a published writer came relatively late in life. “When I came up with Harry’s Last Stand, it was grabbed up by a publisher in London, and that started off the run on my other books, which were three at the time.” Smith’s discussion at Memoir Monday gets underway at 7 p.m.

Greater Napanee

Council receives school accommodation report BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Greater Napanee council had its first opportunity to weigh in on the Limestone District School Board’s Long-Term Accommodation Plan last Tuesday. During the meeting, council was presented for information a few key points on the plan, which were compiled by Debra Rantz, Director of Education and secretary for the LDSB. Among the sweeping changes proposed in the plan, which is still yet to be formally discussed and considered by the school board, includes the closure of Selby Public School, Newburgh PS, Centreville PS, Enterprise PS and Tamworth Elementary School. Many of the students from the closed schools would be consolidated into a new

374-student school possibly built on the current Centreville PS school, with other students being redirected to The Prince Charles School. The plan also includes the possibility of redirecting Grades 7 and 8 to Napanee District Secondary School. Among the driving factors of the proposal, which was developed by the Ameresco consulting firm, is the fact that Limestone has a surplus of 4,000 pupil spaces due to decking enrolment. The long-term plan was compiled as part of protocol set out by the Ministry of Education which requires all school boards to review their operating efficiencies. “I found that amazing actually when I read that report,” said Mayor Gord Schermerhorn. “There were 4,000 empty spaces in the Limestone District School Board that are available for

students.” Though there are still several steps that will need to be taken until a final decision is made, some parents have already started to voice their desire to keep the smaller community schools up and running. “I find it very disappointing as a whole the approach the public school boards are taking to close a lot of the smaller schools and consolidate them into larger schools,” said councillor Max Kaiser. “We’re really taking away the heart and soul of some of these smaller communities. As much as we’re part of a larger amalgamated community now, there’s a lot lost in the closures.” In her report, Rantz stated that saving money wouldn’t be the only factor considered as the board mulls the future of the schools. According to the report:

“smaller enrolments lead to multi-grade classes and fewer programming and extra-curricular opportunities for students. Also, there is insufficient funding to meet the maintenance and repair needs of Limestone schools while maintaining a balanced budget as the board is required to do. Although facility partnerships may provide opportunities for schools to rent surplus space, this does not address programming pressures or reduce surplus pupil spaces.” The school board is scheduled to meet with municipal and community partners in September to share the plan and receive and discuss relevant information. Following that meeting, their plan could be revised. Council ultimately voted to receive the report for information.

NOTICE OF CLOSURE OF THE SPRING AT SPRINGSIDE PARK

The Spring at Springside Park will officially be closed to the public effective the week of June 27th, 2016 In order to comply with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care as well as local Health Unit directives, the Town must remove access to the source of water at the Springside Park Spring. The water from the spring is collected from an unknown/unprotected source; it is not intended to be used for drinking and should be considered unsafe. Effective the week of June 27th, 2016, water will no longer be accessible for collection at the spring. A more esthetically pleasing, permanent solution will be installed at a later date as part of an overall plan being developed for parkland improvements. Please note that the Town of Greater Napanee operates three potable water filling stations that are available to all of our residents. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Time For Review

BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

The Municipal Arts and Culture Committee for Greater Napanee is looking for nominees for the upcoming second annual Arts and Culture Awards. The deadline is coming up fast, however — those looking to make a nomination must have their submission in by this Sunday. Committee vice-chair Tim Nimigan says that the committee has received some nominations already, but they’d like to see a few more. Award categories are: established artist of the year; student artist of the year; arts educator of the year; outstanding event; community impact by an organization; and lifetime achievement award, with sub-categories for ‘individual’ and ‘group’ nominees. Last year, established artist of the year award went to Sherry Pringle, student arts winner was Gloria Digby, educator of the year was Christine Barstow, event award winner was the Lennox and Addington County anniversary celebration, and the ‘community impact by an organization’ award was won by the Canadian Legion (for its annual Remembrance Day art contests). Lifetime achievement award for a group went to the Lennox Community Theatre, while the individual award went to Charlie King. Nimigan said that, in appropriate categories, nominees who don’t win an award this year could be considered in future years. “If somebody nominates somebody one year, and they don’t win that year, we hang on to that nomination, particularly if it’s not geared just to that year,” said Nimigan. People can pick up nomination forms at the Greater Napanee Town Hall. For more information, contact ezatterberg@greaternapanee.com.

J.M. Parrott Centre says goodbye to top doc Dr. Douglas Alkenbrack retires from facility

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Dr. J. Douglas Alkenbrack will officially hang up his stethoscope for good at the end of the month, retiring after a combined 44 years of service to residents as the medical director/attending physician of Lenadco and the John M. Parrott Centre. A reception was held at the Parrott Centre on Monday afternoon as residents, friends, family and dignitaries from L&A County were on hand to bid a happy retirement to the staple of the local medical community. Dr. Alkenbrack got his start in 1972 at Lenadco where he worked his way up to medical director by the early 1980s. During his four decades of service in the community, he garnered a reputation for always being on call, many times delaying family dinners and gatherings so he could check up on his patients. Even when at the cottage he made time to call in to work every day to make sure everything was running smoothly back at the residence. As a token of appreciation for all the family dinners they made him late for,

Adam Prudhomme-Staff

Dr. Doug Alkenbrack wrapped up more than 44 years of service with a retirement party Monday. staff at the Parrott Centre presented his wife, Shelley, with bouquet of flowers. The retiring doctor was presented with a handful of gifts, including an original oak fruit bowl made by Gibbard’s, one of the few left

from the historic company. “It’s been a very interesting period, I’ve witnessed many changes in the care of the elderly,” said Dr. Alkenbrack when reflecting back on his long, distinguished career. “Most of these changes have been very positive and have resulted in an improved level of care and quality of life for our elderly residents. I’m happy that I have been just a small part of that.” Dr. Alkenbrack was quick to credit his co-workers for helping to make the Parrott Centre one of the highest quality resident care buildings in the province, as noted by several independent evaluators. He praised the staff for their ability to continue to offer exceptional care for the residents despite ongoing cuts to the province’s health care budget. “I’m very confident the home will have excellent medical care from our new medical director, Dr. Pierre Robichaud,” said Dr. Alkenbrack. “He is a young, enthusiastic and a very caring and bright doctor. I think he will be a tremendous asset for our home.” Dr. Robichaud will officially assume duties on July 1. And though Dr. Alkenbrack is retiring, his coworkers, wife and even the doctor himself agreed that he likely won’t be away for too long and will still be a familiar sight around the building.

The race also doubled as a fundraiser, with more than $10,000 being raised for a new fully-accessible park to be built by the Napanee Rotary Club. “So many of our expenses throughout the day were covered by local businesses,” said Giffin, who noted the grand total far exceeded their expectations. “It just allows us to take that much more money from the registration and put it directly into Rotary which is incredible for us.” Given the positive reception of the first one, race organizers are already taking steps to make this an annual event. Though nothing is finalized, they plan to support a different charitable cause each year, with a focus on encouraging members of the community to get active. “We are certainly hoping to make it an annual event,” said Giffin. “Looking at the registration and how many Adam Prudhomme-Staff people were actually from Participants in the first-ever Napanee Heritage 5K jog through the streets of Napanee on Saturday. F there was ever any doubt as to whether or not Napanee could support its own 5K race, they were emphatically erased on Saturday. A healthy number of runners, support staff and community partners made the first-ever Napanee Heritage 5K a resounding success. “It was amazing,” said event organizer Heather Giffin. “We ended up having about 275 registered in the 5K race and we sold out with an additional 80 participants in the kids one miler. It was beyond our expectations.” John Coffin, a 34-yearold from Belleville, crossed the finish line first with a time of 17:46.38. He was followed closely by Napanee’s Carter Free. The local 16year-old finished with a time of 17.56.72. Jason Lloyd, a 41-year-old from

Bantam Express ready for the hometown stage Softball Napanee to host Bantam Elims July 1-3 BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

aving travelled coast to coast to play just about every top tournament for their age group growing up, the Napanee AFW Construction Bantam Express will finally have their shot to play as host. Running July 1-3, the Express will be the home team in an 11 team doubleknock-out OASA Elimination tournament. The top three teams to come out of the Napanee tournament will join the host Shallow Lake team for the U16 Canadian Fastpitch Championship Aug. 10-14 in Owen Sound. Made up of a core group of 10 local players who have played together since mite as well three pick ups from the Brockville area, this Express group is used to the big stage. They played in both Western and Eastern Canadians, squaring off

H

against some of the best teams in the country in their age group. The upcoming eliminations, however, will be their first time playing a high-level tournament in their own backyard. “There’s not a lot of room for error,” Express coach Ryan Rowe said of playing the double knockout eliminations. “They’ve been in some of the biggest games that they can play in the last two or three years. I think when it comes to crunch time they’re going to be ready for that spotlight. (Playing at home) will be exciting for them.” Though they will be ready, Rowe says they will have their hands full with some of the teams that will be making the trip to the Napanee Fairground diamonds. “We’re going to face some stiff competition,” said Rowe. “There are three or four teams in Western Ontario, primarily Shallow Lake, Tavistock and Kitchener. There’s not a lot of bantam competition (in the Napanee area), we’re the only team in the east.

he Napanee Doyle’s Windows and Sunrooms Novice Express travelled to Vaughan for a successful weekend of ball, using bit of walk-off magic en route to a gold medal finish. Three round robin wins on Saturday versus the top ranked Vaughan team, Peterborough and Port Perry placed the Napanee girls second overall. Facing Vaughan again for semifinal action it was a tight game until Vaughan opened the gap in the fifth inning. Finding themselves down by four at the bottom of the seventh, with a runner on second Emily Proderick hit a home run to kickstart a rally that saw the bats came alive to force extra innings. Vaughan went ahead in the

T

eight by a run, once again putting the Express in a do or die situation. With runners on second and third, Emma Parslow drove a strong single through the infield and cashed in both runners to advance the Express to the finals. Gracie Hearns pitched a strong game with Alexa Oreucuia and Megan Morrow relieving. Facing Whitby for the Gold the Express drove in three runs in the top of the first to secure a lead that continued throughout the game. Whitby attempted to battle back in the fourth and the fifth innings with runners on and scoring chances however outfielders Parslow and Chihiro Suzuki both completed stellar double plays, shutting down any chances to rebound in the process. Proderick again connected with a home run and Megan Morrow pitched a complete game to secure a 7-1 win.

inor Hockey season may not be on most people’s radar at the moment, but Napanee District Minor Hockey is already looking ahead. Though the calendar may say summer and the Stanley Cup has been presented, plans are already underway for the next puck season. After reviewing their applications, the NDMH board announced the head coaches for the 2016-17 hockey season. At the Novice BB level

Kael Fredenburg follows through on a base hit during last Wednesday’s league game. He and his AFW Construction Express teammates will get set to host the OASA Bantam Eliminations July 1-3 at the Fairgrounds.

EXPRESS | First look at Bantam aged opponents CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 It's tough to get anyone out this way. Rounding out the field will be Ennismore, Dutton, Osgoode, Cobourg, ORSA, Ivanhoe and Belmore. It'll be a bit of a two-way street for the Express in that while they haven’t seen any of the competition they'll face on the Canada Day weekend, those clubs haven't seen the Express either. That could swing the advantage in favour of the pitchers who will have an

element of surprise the first couple of times through the lineup. To stay sharp for the tournament the Express have been playing weekly games in a Kingston's Men's League, sometimes facing opponents up to twice their age. “It helps playing the men for sure, said Rowe. “The game’s faster, the guys are stronger. It gets the kids ready to play kids their own age. They definitely help us out as well. They’re pretty good at helping us out along

the way, showing the kids some of the things to get them ready. The home crowd atmosphere won't be completely foreign to the boys however, as they are fully aware of the large turnouts Napanee is known for. Some of the players got a taste of it when they served as bat boys during the U21 and U23 Championships that the town has held in recent years. The diamonds could be packed all weekend, as the tournament also happens to

fall on the Canada Day weekend. Napanee’s first game will be July 1 at 8:30 p.m. when they will take on the winner of an Ennismore and Dutton affair that will go a 4:30 p.m. With a win the Express would play next on Saturday at 1 p.m. A loss in their first game means they would play for their tournament lives at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The tournament’s opening ceremonies will be held just prior to Napanee’s first game at 8 p.m.

Jean loved to paint, laugh, dance and to share her love of life with family and friends. She loved spending time with her family at the cottage where boating, waterskiing and hanging out with the neighbours became treasured life long memories. Jean had an extraordinary artistic talent that was truly a gift to be envied and admired by all who knew her. She especially loved to paint, whether it was simply a piece to hang on her grandchild's bedroom wall, to overlay Graham's wood carvings or something to be auctioned off for a local charity, she did it all with flourish and love. She never missed watching her beloved Blue Jays play a game and would inspire us all by wearing her jersey to a cancer treatment or to lunch at the Chateau to recruit more followers to her cause. She lived her life passionately and her strength and faith were unfaltering. Jean’s family would like to gratefully acknowledge the wonderful care provided by the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital and the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario. On June 9, the Ontario government released its anticipated plan on how the province will address climate change. The Climate Change Action Plan lays the groundwork for how Ontario will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to meet reduction targets. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) is encouraged that the government intends to make climate change planning a priority. There are a number of incentive programs and retrofit funding included in the plan, and while specific details are yet to be released, OFA expects farmers and rural Ontario to be given equal access to available funding. OFA has held a consistent position on climate change. It is real and agriculture is part of the solution. We have long pushed for Ontario farmers to be acknowledged for the efforts they have already taken to reduce GHG emissions.

One of the more important aspects of the plan that OFA is pleased to see included, is the commitment to expand natural gas infrastructure in rural Ontario. An earlier leaked report suggested that natural gas was on the chopping block. OFA is relieved to see that the plan recognizes the importance of this efficient, reliable and low carbon energy source. When rural Ontario has access to affordable natural gas, our farms, businesses and rural communities are able to operate more competitively. OFA has always supported research and innovation investments in the bioeconomy, which offer great economic opportunities for the agriculture sector while reducing our overall impact on the environment. We appreciate the commitment in the plan to ongoing research and development for low-carbon technology. Ontario farmers will be feedstock providers and investors to applications of some of these technologies including renewable natural gas, cellulosic sugar, biofuels, etc. OFA is pleased to see a clear commitment from government in the action plan to create a carbon offset system. A carbon offset system is where agriculture can help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, or offer permanent emission reductions from farm activities, and deliver madein-Ontario credit compliance options for GHG emitting industries. OFA has been a strong advocate for including agriculture in the Cap and Trade system. The new Climate Change Action Plan provides another compelling case for agriculture’s contributions to be part of the climate change solution. Ontario farmers consistently show their willingness to employ new technology to their businesses. Now, precision agriculture and the need for digital soil mapping is now more paramount than ever for Ontario farm future competitiveness. Through the application of precision ag with the equipment available in today’s farm machinery, combined with publicly available digital soil maps, improvement in carbon sequestration, and phosphorous and nitrogen management can be considered like never before possible. These actions are directly linked to help Ontario meet its targets. A recent announcement from Minister Leal on soil mapping for the areas of the province are a start to achieve the emerging needs of data required. One area of the new plan that OFA is puzzled about is the emphasis on the electric vehicle industry. While the government has already committed to sizable investments in urban transportation, the drive to electrify our vehicles would seem to be in direct competition with the very public transportation system they are expanding. With the new Climate Change Action Plan, the Ontario government has made a significant commitment to the health and wellbeing of the planet. OFA looks forward to the opportunities for the agriculture industry as the new plan rolls out across the province. To the Ontario government, the time to act is now in getting these programs designed and out for famers to harvest real results.

This soda took the ‘ouch out of your grouch’ ‘Taking the ouch out of grouch!’ was the first slogan connected with the soda pop known as 7 Up. ‘Nothing does it like 7 Up’, and ‘You like it, it likes you!’ were two other maxims which promoted this popular soft drink over the years. Perhaps the most widely used jingle was ‘There’s no cola like the uncola.’ There is a mythical tale often used to encourage perseverance told about a man who loved soda pop and decided to enter that business. His first product was called 4 Up — but he had virtually no sales. He tried again — this time with one called 5 Up. When that

effort failed as well, he was very discouraged; but tried harder with his next venture — 6 up. When that fell through he quite altogether. Some time later he heard that someone had concocted a soft drink called 7 Up, which was a huge success. Well that really isn’t the way it happened. Charles Leiper Gregg was a man who was at the right place at the right time. His first job was in St. Louis at the Vess Jones Manufacturing Company. The primary product of that business was carbonated beverages. It was while in that company’s employ that he invented a soft drink called ‘Whistle’. Not surprisingly he had

a dispute with management and, losing his patent on that soda pop, and moved to the Warner Jenkinson Company. In the process of developing flavouring for these beverages, he created another of his own ilk, called ‘Howdy’. His next step up the business ladder was forming his own company, named after that drink. Unfortunately, his first two efforts copied Orange Crush too closely, which was the top dog in that venture in the early 1920s. This prompted him to switch to lemon-lime flavouring; and in October 1929 he introduced ‘BibLabel Lithiated Lemon-

Lime Sodas’. The fact that by 1936 he had abbreviated the name to just ‘7 Up’ coincides with his original inclusion of the ingredient Lithium — a powerful drug which is still commonly prescribed for evening out mood swings. It quickly became a favourite during the Great Depression — for obvious reasons. This is where the ‘taking the ouch out of grouch’ came in. The effect of the drug gave people a ‘lift’ in the midst of one of the most disheartening period of civilization’s history — often called the “Dirty Thirties” — a decade of poverty and hardship. Surprisingly the FDA did not step in and insist he remove this narcotic. Perhaps it also explains why one of his first promotions in describing his ‘uncola’ was that the ‘7’ referred to the seven ingredients in the mix, and ‘up’ to the bubbles moving to the top — and, “…

And although the drink’s history goes back a long way, 7 Up was by no means the first of its kind. The first ‘soft drinks’ were first concocted in the 1600s, but carbonation didn’t come on the scene until 1767. The real breakthrough took place in 1832 when John Matthews created a mass-producing apparatus to supply soda fountains. Ginger Ale was introduced in 1851; the term ‘pop’ came into play 10 years later; and in 1876 the initial ‘name brand’ soda, root beer, went on sale. Coca Cola, perhaps the best-known soft drink appeared on the scene Snapshots From in 1886. There have been over The Past 1,500 brands of pop pro.. a savory, flavor drink with duced in North America; even now 450 varieties are a real wallop.” By 1940 it was the third available in a specialty shop most popular soft drink in in Los Angeles; and about 50 the world. And even when are still well known on the the lithium was removed in market today. 7 Up was absorbed by Dr. 1950, it remained a Pepper in 1986. favourite.

Loca hustles during flyball practice at the L&A Agricultural Society Memorial Arena. The annual Napanee tournament goes this weekend.

Canines of all shapes and sizes, and from far and wide, will be at Lennox and Addington Agricultural Society’s Memorial Arena this weekend for the eighth annual Ready, Set, Go Flyball Tournament. expected to take part in this year’s event, which features a casino theme. “It’s a sport that anyone can do with any type of dog,” said Nancy Yanaky, member of the Ready, Set, Go, Kingston based flyball team. “It’s great for high energy dogs, it gives them something to focus on and a way to burn off a lot of their energy and keeps them from getting restless and into trouble at home.” Ages of the 17 human members of the Kingstonarea team range from 16 to over 70 years old. The Ready, Set, Go team was founded in 2006 and holds regular practices throughout the year in Napanee and has even travelled to a couple of tournaments. Yanaky, along with her daughter Madelaine Gault, will be taking part in this weekend’s tournament with their border collie Loca. Like many of the dogs that compete in the sport, Loca is a rescue. As much fun as the owners and the dog have taking part in the sport, it also has the added benefit of bringing the owners closer to their pet, something that draws many participants to the sport. “(Loca) was left in somebody’s backyard,” said Yanaky. “When we first got her she didn’t bond with anybody. Flyball helped her focus and really helped Loca bond with my daughter.” That deeper connection is just one of the many positives

that come from the sport said Yanaky. The tournament gets underway Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and will run until about 4:30 p.m. It will follow the same schedule on Sunday. Admission is free, though donations will be accepted for the Kingston Humane Society. Anyone is welcome to come check out the sport and perhaps see if it’s something they’d like to try out with their own dog. Yanaky says it’s perfect for dog lovers as it brings out all kinds of breeds. “Most teams have a small dog like a Jack Russell, it’s cute to watch,” she said. “They call that the ‘height dog’ because all of the jumps are adjusted to the size of the smallest dog on the team.” By having a pint-sized pup on their roster, they can make for easier jumps for the bigger dogs and allow them to complete the course just that much faster. Though flyball can trace its roots back to the late 1960s, Yanaky says interest in the sport has really spiked in recent years. The Napanee event is proof of that as it’s expected to draw in participants from across Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes and even some of the northern States. Yanaky says the added traffic through town will be a nice economic boost for local businesses. Many of the participants are expected to set up camp on the Fairgrounds and spend the weekend.
