Bruce McPherson Jr., a third-generation owner of the Gibbard Furniture Shops, spoke last week of the redevelopment projects proposed for the factory site on Dundas Street, and how satisfying it will be to see the property no longer sitting vacant. A 120-condominum project is anticipated to break ground at the Gibbard Furniture Factory site this fall under the development of Doornekamp Construction Ltd. Though the redevelopment will mean tearing down much of the current structure, much of the history of the Gibbard Furniture Factory will remain intact. McPherson said the front part of the building — both the exterior and interior — will remain the same, as well as a back part of the building overlooking the water. “The whole front facade will look the same. … It is pretty historic. The front facade represents different eras,” he said. The first portion of the building goes back to 1850, and additions date back to the 1920s, McPherson added. “The facade represents a nice-cross section of the history as it progressed. That’s really important,” he said. The first section will be the sales office but beyond that will include historic Gibbard furniture and documents, including the bill of sale dating back to 1867. One piece of furniture that remains is a large walnut sideboard, made in 1869. “An elderly lady was having to move out of her home and she called us and said, ‘I have a piece of furniture and I want it returned to its home,’ that’s how she put it. It’s been all over Canada and probably down into the States too, from what I understand,” McPherson said about the piece.

Landlords slapped with fines for smoke detector violations BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
Two landlords were fined $1,000 each last week due to insufficient working fire detectors in a rental unit in downtown Napanee. A dwelling owned by Shaune and Doris Lucas, located on Dundas Street East was inspected by Greater Napanee Emergency Services on Aug. 25, 2014, when it was discovered that two fire detectors were not working properly. The fire alarm on the second floor outside a bedroom did not have batteries and one on the first floor had the batteries put in backwards. This meant neither detector was working properly. The case went to trial on last Wednesday – the fourth time it had been brought to court. The charges were: failing to provide a copy of the smoke alarm manufacturer’s maintenance instructions or approved alternative to the tenant, and for failing to maintain the smoke alarms in operating condition in the building. These two charges Please RECYCLE this Newspaper

but found the trailer fully engulfed in flames. The OPP say that witnesses told them that the accused male had entered the trailer and assaulted a female and male. Three adults fled the trailer. The OPP Emergency Response Team and OPP Canine Unites conducted a search of the area; the suspect was located approximately 200 metres east of the scene.
were made against Shaune Lucas and Doris Lucas separately and both pleaded not guilty in court last week. Kevin Duncan, Fire Prevention Officer, took the stand during the trial. He said the tenant told him she was unaware the fire alarms were not working properly and was not able to provide maintenance instructions. Lucas’s lawyer, Michael Seeley, said the fire alarms were maintained annually – which meets the requirement. However, there was no written documentation proving these follow-ups, which meant the responsibility falls on the landlord, Justice of Peace Parsons explained during the trial. Shaune Lucas said they pleaded not guilty because their tenant informed them that she thinks she took the batteries out herself. “Did Doris and I go in and take the batteries out? Of course not,” Shaune Lucas said in an interview after the trial. “How are they supposed to know what the tenant has done?” Seeley asked J.P. Parsons during the trial. “This is a very awkward case, a very difficult case for me,” J.P. Parsons replied, adding that “I deal with what’s here,” reiterating that responsibility is on the land-
lord without written documentation. In the end, Shaune Lucas and Doris Lucas were each fined $500 on each charge, which means $1,000 for each. Shaune Lucas, who represents Ward 5 on Greater Napanee council, said he hopes the case will bring to light the importance of fire safety and the responsibility landlords have on their buildings. “We went through the process because we wanted to give clarity,” said Shaune Lucas after the trial. “Now we have clarity on the issue and are able to give clarity on a landlord’s responsibilities.” He added that he “has nothing bad to say about fire prevention” or the process. Doris Lucas added that, since being charged last fall, she and Shaune have purchased 67 more fire alarms from the fire department to ensure their 30-40 units in Greater Napanee and Deseronto are properly protected. In an interview after the trial, Duncan and GNES Fire Chief Terry Gervais said it is their goal and responsibility to ensure all residents of Greater Napanee are properly protected and educated. “Just after the fatalities in Alexandria, Ontario, with a
mother and children, that Monday morning, I came in and talked to Kevin (Duncan) and said, ‘We have to stop this.’ I took the report to the next council meeting and said, ‘I don’t want to stand in front of you and tell you about a fatality in our municipality because they don’t have a working smoke alarm,’” Gervais explained. That was in 2012 and the chief said that, ever since then, the GNES has been diligent in ensuring fire safety across the whole municipality. “Our whole goal is to protect the residents of our community… We have landlords in this community that have an obligation to protect their tenants – residents of our community. We take it very serious that they do that,” Gervais said He added that charging landlords is unusual for the fire department In fact, another landlord was charged on Aug. 25 for not having a fire detector placed on the ceiling and another landlord was fined in court the day after Lucas’s trial. “We don’t want to take people to court any more than they want to be in court. It costs the municipality money when we go to court but at the end of the day, we have an obligation,” Gervais added.

Communities in Bloom judges to arrive in July Beautification preparations for visit on track, organizers say Staff Reporter
For the third year in a row, Greater Napanee will compete in Communities in Bloom and participators are confident that this will be the year the municipality will be awarded five blooms. Two CIB judges Grace Dekker and Doreen Hill will be in Greater Napanee July 20-22 to determine how many blooms Greater Napanee will receive. Dekker grew up working in a family greenhouse for 25 years and was appointed by the lieutenant governor of Ontario to the Ontario Food Terminal Board for a six-year term, becoming vice chairperson in her final year. Hill is a former owner and CEO of a design firm in Oakville, Mississauga and Toronto and then went on to become a member of the Kincardine Horticultural Society for 19 years and was an executive of the Kincardine Communities in Bloom for 12 years. Local CIB chair Marg Isbester said the committee has taken into consideration everything former judges have told them for the past
two years and made changes accordingly. These changes have included the corner garden at Centre and Bridge Streets; the installation of antique farming equipment downtown; improved urbanization by planting more trees; and expansion of the Veggies in the Village project. Though Isbester admits that there are some aspects that will cost them points, she said CIB volunteers have done everything in their power to improve beautification throughout the municipality and is very confident for five blooms. “We’ll still lose points for some cracked sidewalks and things like that, but that’s all budget related, we can only go so far,” she said. “It’s all been included and we have a big dig coming downtown and have planning for all that. Bit by bit it’s coming together. We have active transportation with a bike friendly and a walk friendly survey and trying to go for designation for that,” Isbester added. The tour will include all parts of the municipality – north, south, and the downtown core. Kathy Medd, CIB volunteer, said it will be
important to take the judges to ongoing projects in order for them to see how the municipality has grown each year. “For sure, they’ll be at the corner garden. They’ve been very interested in that corner from the beginning. In 2013, they saw the concept. In 2014, they saw the project initiated. In 2015, they’ll see the project completed,” said Medd. “It would be nice to get them around to most of the adopted gardens. We’re really pleased with the fact that all of our gardens have been adopted and we have more volunteers that have come forward to adopt the gardens, which is great. That was something we wanted to see happen, too,” Medd added. There are about 13 adopted gardens in Greater Napanee. Isbester said she hopes to take the judges to the Macpherson House to show its restoration and gardens. A reception will also be held here, commemorating CIB improvements and important volunteers. The Veggies in the Village project, on Church Street, will also be an important

aspect of the tour. Local residents seeking to grow and share fresh food initiated the garden. “We encouraged them and they got all kinds of donations. It started as a small garden and they’ve not only improved that section but they’ve also improved all their own little plots,” said Isbester. “Of course, a lot more than they could use. They canned hundreds of jars of relishes, tomatoes. So this year they wanted to expand it so they made the garden bigger and everyone will still get a share in it.” Last year Greater Napanee Mayor Gord Schermerhorn helped to build a cart for the Veggies in the Village project. This year that cart will be used as a way for neighbours to share produce. “This cart will sit out there and you can take a vegetable and leave a vegetable, and if you don’t want to leave a vegetable you can still take a vegetable. It’s a sharing thing. It’s wonderful,” said Isbester. For more information on what CIB is doing locally, visit the Facebook page: Communities in Bloom – Town of Greater Napanee.

More electoral tinkering Just as municipalities are adjusting to electronic voting, they’ve got another election option to consider between now and the next municipal election — ranked ballots. The provincial government is paving the way for municipalities to use ranked-ballot elections, if they so choose, for the 2018 vote. Under that system, instead of simply marking an ‘x’ beside the name of your preferred candidate, you’ll be able to rank candidates. When the votes are tabulated, all the first place votes are counted; if one of the candidates doesn’t have a majority (50 per cent plus one) of votes, the last-place candidate drops off, and their second-place votes are distributed among the remaining candidates. The process continues until one of the candidates has a majority of votes. While it certainly isn’t a new system of voting — political parties have used this system, or modifications of this system, to select their leaders or riding candidates — it’ll be a first in Canada for an actual election. So what kind of a system would it be for our local municipalities? Well, if we apply the ranked ballot system to the most recent municipal elections are around here, it wouldn’t mean much, since in many cases there were only two candidates, rendering any ranking system moot. In Stone Mills, where there’s voting at-large, a sort of ranked ballot system already exists in the race for the five councillor positions — the five candidates who receive the most ballots win spots on council. On the surface, then, there doesn’t seem to be much incentive to change things up. That said, would changing up the system potentially attract more candidates? Regardless of whether municipalities in this neck of the woods decide to try a new electoral method or not, some pundits are suggesting that Ontario’s experiment with preferential ballots might mean that change could be coming to our provincial or federal elections. On that score, ranked ballots could have a big impact on the outcomes of election campaigns. In those general elections, there are always more than one candidate, each representing a political party. While some MPs and MPPS do win their ridings with more than 50 per cent of the popular vote outright, more often than not, they don’t. That would bring second (and possibly third or fourth or fifth) place votes into play. It’s too early to suggest, at this point, whether ranked ballots would be superior to our first-pastthe-post system. However, some reflection on the status quo is, in our view, always a healthy exercise. We suspect that Ontario’s preferential ballot experiment, assuming that a number of Ontario municipalities will take the province up on its offer, will be watched closely.

Are you up to date on probates? At the request of a reader, I have researched the rules of probate of wills in Ontario and wish to thank Mr. B. Cowle, B.Comm. (Hons), LLB, for his guidance with this research. (You can reach him at 613-354-2161 in Napanee). One of the rules of probates changed and became effective on Jan. 1, 2015. Hopefully everyone has a last will and testament in case of death, because this would make it much easier for those who are in charge of executing it. If you do not have a will, or perhaps have one that was done a long time ago, it is a good idea to either complete another or at least review the one you have to be sure it fully represents your wishes. ‘Probate’ is a process that confirms a will is valid and an executor has the authority to distribute the assets of a deceased person. When required, the provincial government will provide this authority by issuing a certificate of appointment of an estate trustee (this used to be called ‘letters probate’). There is a fee (now called a tax) to be paid based on the value of the assets of the deceased person’s estate. Do all wills have to be probated? No. Usually it depends on the nature of the assets, but is often $20,000 or more, especially if bank investments or third parties are involved. If the will is very complex, the estate may take several years to complete. Probate is important in case the executor expects someone to contest the will.
Are the fees changed? No. Estates valued at $1,000 to $50,000 are taxed at $5 per $1,000; over $50,000 they are taxed at $250 plus $15 per $1,000; for example, a $250,00 estate is taxed $3,250 and a $5 million estate is t a x e d $74,500. Why the change? Simply to tighten the rules to enhance compliance and, the Ontario Ministry of Finance has a more d e f i n e d process for assessing and collecting the tax. I personally translate Cheers this to mean that the government says ‘trust us, but we may not necessarily trust you.” What has changed? Executors must file an estate information return to the ministry within 90 days after the certificate of appointment has been issued. Failure to provide the report may result in a fine or imprisonment. When does the tax need to be paid? At the time the certificate is applied for. If you are the executor, be sure to quickly evaluate the rough value of the estate and other possible expenses. Take the funds out of the account before it is frozen, otherwise you will have to pay any expenses incurred from your own
pocket. The executor must know the value of the estate at that time. Please note estate information is not required for probate certificates before Jan. 1, 2015. A return would not necessarily be needed if all assets are r e a d i l y transferable without a c e r t i f i c a t e. The deceased person information form will be available through your lawyer. Not all assets are included. Those that are exempted are: n Any assets located outside Ontario n CPP death & Jeers benefits n Jointlyowned assets with a right to survive n RRSP, RRIF, TFBA with a named beneficiary other than the estate n Insurance proceeds paid to a named beneficiary other than the estate Note: There are rules about RESPs and RDSPs to be followed. Estate information must be kept for four years in Ontario and seven years at the federal level. If there is an audit and the estate was undervalued a reassessment will be made within the four years. assess if the estate information return was not handed in within the 90 days or if a misrepresentation or a fraud was committed. Heavy fines and/or imprisonment may result. Please understand this was done with good intentions of providing correct information. Seeing a lawyer is a must to ensure that your best interests are served. There is more detailed information available in the Ministry of the Attorney General and in many other websites. Having said that, this is what I think about it. This is the tax I dislike the most. Let me explain. We earn our money at work and we are taxed; we take home the net amount and pay more taxes for most of the things we buy and for services we use; we invest the money and pay more taxes on the profits; and then when we die, the first thing the government does is take another chunk out of anything that the deceased owned or saved. Therefore, the government double, triple and quadruple dips into our hard-earned money. We can’t even die without being taxed. I’ll have to check and see if we are taxed for being born as well, but that is for another day. It does seem ridiculous to say the least, that governments must take that last bite from us so they can spend more. On second thought, jeers to governments – from the grave. A case against ‘stuff’ It’s spring – the time of year when many of us get the urge to purge. Do you ever find yourself going through every closet, making huge piles to throw out or donate and wondering how it was ever possible to accumulate so much stuff? You are not alone. This past March, Time magazine recently examined what they called “America’s clutter problem.” The article claimed that 75 per cent of garages in America are so full that homeowners can’t park their cars inside — and that is just the beginning! In the western world, retail therapy is taking over our lives. A whole subculture of experts have been driven by acquisitiveness – self storage rental, downsizing and organizing consultants, junk
removal companies and a whole slew of organization self-help books. One such book is The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo, currently a bestseller. I’m not Coles’ normally interested in self-help but I was nonetheless drawn to this book and ended up reading it in one sitting. Kondo goes into detail about how one should organize their things but, ultimately, her philosophy is simple: ask yourself if an item in your home ‘sparks joy’ – if not, send it on its way. The author comes across as a little bit nutty and her claims about how purging
your closets will be a complete life cure-all are a stretch, but if there was ever a book to motivate you simplify, Kondo’s would be it. You can’t really properly consider accumulation and decluttering without also Notes thinking about capitalism and consumerism. This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein, a 2015 Evergreen Award nominee, is an investigation into the climate change crisis precipitated by capitalism. Klein urges us to “consume less – right away” and look at “changing how much energy we actually use: how often we drive, how often we fly, whether our food has to be flown to get to us,

whether the goods we buy are built to last, how large our homes are.” The book is scary but important and surprisingly hopeful. We have been told that humanity is too greedy and selfish to rise to the challenge of tackling climate change but Klein discusses how all around the world, the fight back is already succeeding. A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago June 9, 1965
n Too many fires were happening at the Napanee landfill site. That was the view of some members of town council, who were reacting to a fire that occurred at the site on the Napanee River a few weeks earlier. Fire officials said they believed the fire may have been deliberately set. Somewhat ironically, the council discussion ultimately led to some consideration of the installation of an incinerator to get rid of the town’s garbage. Council the voted to get quotes for the potential purchase of a waste incinerator. n Although accident statistics were showing a rise in the number of fatal accidents in the province, numbers specific to Lennox and Addington showed a decrease in deaths on the roadways in L&A. E.J.M Hughes, the administrator of the Ontario Department of Transport, said that the stats for the first three months of 1965 showed one of the worst three months in the province’s history. L&A County’s numbers, however were down when compared to the same period in 1964.

n Napanee town council’s plan to purchase the former steam plant on the Napanee River waterfront suffered a setback. The Napanee Region Conservation Authority, which had been approached to buy the buy the building with the help of a ‘green belt’ grant indicated that it wasn’t interested in taking on the building. The building was owned by Kimmerly Lumber. The town’s theatre guild, along with the Lennox and Addington Guild of Fine Arts, was lobbying the municipality to take over the building. n Some 26 firefighters were on-scene to battle a house fire in Odessa. The fire at the Factory Street home started just before 3 a.m. Firefighters were on site for six hours bringing the blaze under control. The homeowner was awakened by the fire and was able to escape the house with his wife without injury. The eight-room house, built in the 1800s, sustained extensive damage in the upper attic. There was also a considerable amount of water damage.

Four local women nominated for national award
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Four local business owners received national recognition this week, each earning a nomination for an RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur of the Year award. Among those nominated from across the country were Napanee’s own Joanne Burke, who owns Touch of Wellness Aveda Spa, Jen Fitzpatrick of Serendipity Studios, Connie Pritchard of Pritchard’s Decorating and Anne Roantree of Cardiff Creations. Among the criteria for the nominees is they must run a successful and profitable business, present a business plan demonstrating JUNE 4 SOUP AND SANDWICH LUNCH At St. Mary Magdalene Church hall, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., cost $7 per person. how they are filling a niche in their local market, be involved in their community and have exhibited exceptional business growth in the last year. There are a total of six categories covering everything from start ups to charitable organizations to trailblazers who break into new markets. The winner will be announced Nov. 18 during a gala in Toronto. “I am extremely grateful, proud and humbled by this nomination,” said Burke. “I’m truly blessed to have the love and support from my family and friends. I could not have achieved my dreams and goals without the love and support from my amazing team and business partner Roy Townsend.”
For Burke ,the nomination is a validation for her efforts of turning the former Superior Restaurant’s upstairs ballroom into a state of the art spa and relaxation centre. Before even opening the doors to the public she organized an extensive renovation of the old building from floor to ceiling. “There were times when I thought ‘what am I doing?’ But I have a great space, a great product and an unbelievable team and we’re licensed by the LCBO,” Burke says with a laugh. “We’ve got four key ingredients that seem to be working well and people seem to be responding to it.” Since opening three years ago she’s been able to double her team from five to
10. She says word of mouth has spread about her business and she’s seeing more and more clients who are making the trip from Belleville, Kingston, Picton and Toronto. For Fitzpatrick, she began small, launching her business out of her home in 2005. She worked at it parttime, slowly but steadily building up enough clients to open a full-time studio in downtown Napanee. Through the help of social media, the studio quickly became a destination for families, artists and wedding experts. Over the past 10 years Fitzpatrick says she’s been able to incorporate her love of teaching with her love of photography though camps, workshops and men-
toring. “I was thrilled to find out that I had been nominated for such a prestigious award,” said Fitzpatrick. “Women across the country who work tirelessly to create economic and social change, are so inspirational and influential. The award winners from each category have truly made a difference and I think that all women who own their own business strive to do the same.” Fitzpatrick says operating a business in a small town has both its rewards and challenges. “One of the things I love most about being a photographer, is that I have opportunities to travel to various cities and countries, and to work with large corpora-

Young entrepreneurs take centre stage BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
A glimpse into the future of Lennox and Addington’s business landscape was on display at the L&A county courthouse last Tuesday as NDSS students hosted their Young Entrepreneur Showcase. A total of six high school students presented their business ideas, offering a brief overview of their money-making ideas to local business owners. The students are members of Nancy Savage’s Grade 11 ‘It’s Your Business’ course. “This event is a starting point for them and an opportunity to let the community know what they plan to do and what they plan to bring to the table,” Savage said of the showcase, which was in its second year. “Within the school community, we have seen a drastic change in the
mindset of the students witnessing their peers and relatives starting their own businesses and now they feel confident they can do the same thing. They have the desire to make their own way in the world because they’ve also seen how hard it is for young adults to secure work after post secondary education.” Under the guidance of Savage, L&A Business Development Officer Tracey Snow and some community mentors, the students have spent the entire semester developing every aspect of their business. There was quite the range of ideas presented during the showcase, all of which are currently in operation. Aaron Cassidy launched Iron Transformations, which takes scrap metal and turns it into art. Charlotte Kouri is running a marketing and design company called CK Designs
which helps businesses establish their brand in the market place. Mackenzie Vermilyea presented Kenzie’s Veggies, a local vegetable market which will offer deliveries of fresh produce as well as traditional vegetable stand sales. Kassidy Wood-Murphy’s Kassidy Dawn make up artistry business is already proving to be a success as she had several Grade 12 students request her services ahead of prom. Allie Fiset is working on Flawless Finishes, which specializes in real estate, interior design and staging. Brandon Wagner, who wasn’t actually in the class but still is running a successful business, created Tech Support which helps users with all things technical from figuring out a new phone to computer repairs and installations. Absent from the showcase but still operating a business is Adam Weather-

Fairies fare to take over L&A Museum
BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
ENNOX and Addington County’s Museum and Archives will close out their first season of their Museum Kids program with a little magic, imagination and fairy dust on Saturday. Lisa Davis of Simple Country Pleasures Greenhouses will be the guest speaker as she explores the folklore surrounding mythical fairies. After her talk, kids will have a chance to create their own fairy garden. “They are miniature landscapes created using small scale plants, materials and accessories to create a themed area,” Davis said of fairy gardens. “I’ll show the kids some examples of
L
different themed gardens and then their imagination comes in.” Davis will supply the kids with a small planting pot, some plants, stones and a ‘whimsical’ fairy. She says it will serve as a perfect starting point and from there the kids are encouraged to make it their own. Whether it’s a woodland theme, beach theme or even a sports theme, the gardens can be designed in any fashion they see fit. While there are accessories available from stores, Davis says many times some of the best additions to a garden are things found in nature such as moss, branches or stones. “The sky is the limit,” said Davis, adding that in her experience she’s seen that fairy garden enthusiasts come in all ages and
genders. As part of her visit Davis will also be offering a brief history of fairies, which dates back hundreds of years. “In the celtic history it was believed that fairies were driven away by humans to live in another world,” said Davis. According to legend, by creating gardens to their liking, the fairies will come back to this world to visit. Some legends say that sometimes they can be seen dancing with fireflies in the moonlight. “In a world full of electronics, fairies encourages kids to use their imagination,” added Davis. To further encourage that creative thinking, Davis says she will bring ‘fairy dust’ to sprinkle on each of the gardens.
“It dates back to the 1840s and it’s believed to have special powers and be carried by fairies in small pouches.” said Davis. “It’s glittery magic and gives them the ability to fly.” Although aimed at kids, Davis encourages parents to come prepared to help as well and make it fun for the whole family. The free event gets underway at 10 a.m. at the museum, located at 97 Thomas Street E. in Napanee. Saturday’s event will mark the last Museum Kids event of the season, taking a break until October. In the meantime the county will shift its focus to many child-friendly events and activities that will be coming to the Allan Macpherson House throughout the summer.

MD Canada thanks local firefighters at annual walk BY SETH DUCHENE Editor
At the annual Eastern Ontario Walk for Muscular Dystrophy on Sunday, those fighting Muscular Dystrophy got a few words of encouragement from someone who knows a thing or two about fighting. Jessica Boomhower, a Greater Napanee Emergency Services firefighter who suffered a serious stroke just less than a year ago, brought greetings on behalf of her fellow firefighters, who have been supporting Muscular Dystrophy Canada since 1984. For their efforts in 2014, MD Canada honoured the department with its ‘Department of the Year’ Award. “Napanee firefighters are very proud and honoured to support this event as long as this long-standing firefighter tradition, said Boomhower.
“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some of the wonderful people who’ve been affected by MD. These individuals are some of the strongest that I know. I’ve seen and heard first hand just how important the firefighters’ support is to those affected, and how it assists MD Canada. These reasons are why we continue to fundraise and why we continue to help find a cure. Firefighters will be there until a cure is found,â€? she continued. Walkers also got words of thanks and encouragement from MD ‘ambassador’ Phil Cook, who was stricken with the disease 23 years ago. Cook, who also goes by the nickname ‘Hotwheelz’, said he refuses to surrender to the disease. “MD is a group of diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. Although last year proved to be the department’s best fundraising year yet, Napanee firefighters have been long-standing supporters of MD Canada. “Since 1984, these troopers, these heroes in your community, have raised a total of $124,397,â€? said Pam Musgrave, a regional manager for MD Canada. “We hope that, with our help, we’ll be able to someday find a cure,â€? said Boomhower. “Muscular Dystrophy Canada is the charity of choice for firefighters. Last year in eastern Ontario, Napanee firefighters were the third top fundraising department‌ We were able to raise over $8,000 in just 50 hours. Of course, that would not have been possible without the support of all the local residents and businesses. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the cause. Changes for a functioning house Once you have made an assessment of your home, you can analyze your findings and determine what level of change is required. Look over your answers and findings from family members and see if there is a particular pattern to the responses. If many of your concerns have to do with storage, and ease with which various functions can be carried out, then the solution may involve replanning or reorganization. If you are just short on space, conversion or an addition may be the solution. If it’s spatial quality, you may consider some alterations in your home. Maybe your problems lie in a lack of efficiency in any or all of your home’s systems function, you may need to upgrade or replace them. For most of us, the troubles are scattered across the board, you will need to really examine where your priorities lie. Extending Space To provide more space short of moving is to extend your home by adding on a new room or rooms, adding a new storey, or by making existing rooms bigger. The direct benefits of gaining more space are easy to imagine, but the implications go much further than a simple increase in square footage. First you must get permission under local building codes or zoning regulations. It
will affect the structure and stability of your home so seek professional guidance. Adding space may affect the external appearance of your home and possibly decrease usable garden area. It will also affect the value of your property. Your decision to add square footage to your home ultimately comes down to whether you are better off staying put or moving. Changing Space For a development in a space, a fundamental change in light, volume and scale, you will need to alter the basic framework in your home: create openings, move walls, erect partitions or change levels. The idea of this undertaking fills most people with dread, understandably, given the horror stories that survivors of this type of home improvements like to tell. If you prepare yourself properly ahead of time and are thoroughly acquainted with the pitfalls, you are less likely to fall into them. A good deal of the complexity and, therefore, expense of this work hinges on whether the alterations are structural or not. You will need an architect or engineer to tell you which is which. Some alterations will require approval from the local building department, and for most you will need the service of a qualified builder.
Changing Systems For the systems that serve your home — its heating, cooling, electricity, sewage and ventilation — are all vital for health, comfort and general health. Deficient or faulty systems are inconvenient and uneconomical and can even pose a real physical danger to yourself or
Merola Tahamtan Design Time your home. Replanning these systems to suit new spatial arrangements varies in complexity and expense, and needs to be carried out by a professional and early in the course of alterations. Reorganization Some of the most immediate changes you can make to your home have to do with its organization. A new layout can conjure space from thin air and transform confused, irritating daily routines into models of efficiency. Many of the solutions are simple. Many of us are surprisingly conventional when it comes to assigning uses to rooms. Yet we should break away from traditional arrangements and liberate to much more useful spaces. Provided relocation doesn’t involve moving services
around, this is one of the simplest changes you can make. For example, why does the largest bedroom have to be the master bedroom, when it is the children who could benefit from extra floor space? Home organization naturally has a great deal to do with how and where things are kept. As your possessions accumulate, storage facilities often lag behind until confusion threatens to take over. Well-planned storage that is easily accessible is vital for a smooth-running household and represents a great spacesaver in itself.
Poor surfaces aren’t always symptomatic of underlying decay, but they counteract any improvements you make elsewhere; painting cracked or veined plasterwork will give it a superficial freshness but won’t disguise the basic problem and may end up looking even worse. Keeping on top of small problems as they crop up dramatically lessons the risk of a major calamity at a later date.
ishes and materials for the job they have to do and which will withstand the wear and tear they will receive. Many of the options that fall into this category are relatively inexpensive and painless to carry out, involving far less disruption that building work or major repair. Whether you are staying in your home for a short period of time, or for numerous years to come, there is a level of change you can undertake to make your home a more enjoyable and functioning space. Community chips in to help GNSC Donations lead to improved program for 2015

hanks to some cooperation from a couple of community partners, the Greater Napanee Soccer Club was be able to secure new equipment and access to several pitches for the 2015 season. As a result of the partnerships, the club will be able to adopt some of the recommendations handed down by the Ontario Soccer Association. Among those was the creation of a U-4 division, which saw 114 kids sign up for the first year. Other tweaks to the program include smaller field sizes for younger ages and calling it recreational soccer instead of house league. Ongoing roll out of the recommendations will take place over the next few years. The Town of Greater Napanee has made available the Strathcona Paper Centre’s south side field for the U-4 age division. The North Fred Sports complex will grant two new fields for U-6 division as well as continue to offer the town fields

At the plate he had the hardest hit ball of the game, a two run triple that was smashed down the right field line. He gave way to Hudson Sheffield to close out the final two innings. In the field the defense tightened up as well. In the fourth they used a perfect relay from right to second to home to cut down a Panthers’ baserunner trying to score from second on a solid base hit. Sheffield did run into a little trouble in the final inning, as some shaky defense behind him allowed the Panthers to load the bases. He then retired the next two batters to close out the game.

CARDS OF THANKS
How do you say “thank you” for everything over 10 months of your life? Dr. Payne for successful heart surgery to replace my aortic valve and put in a pacemaker. Dr. Walker for saving my life during an artery bleed. The doctors, residents, nursing staff, PCAs and everyone in ICU, Davies 3 and 4 and Connell 10. They all treated me so well with patience and concern. To the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists at St. Mary’s who taught me to walk again during my month there. My family were so supportive during all of this, my daughter Kelly Roblin, my son Dale Drew, my brother Duane Ramsay, sister-in-law Dora Drew, all my grandchildren, Marianne and many friends. They all helped me survive along with cards, prayers and visits from so many. Special thanks to Rev. Barbara Mahood for her prayers and visits, my church family at Centreville Memorial United and Newburgh United and the many area churches who had me on their prayer lists. I do believe prayer is how I was able to recover and finally return home, also thank you to Dora and the UCW members for gifts of food and help at home. Everyone has been so kind and loving through this long ordeal. I thank you all so much. Donna Drew.

Macpherson House stages unique show BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
In two weeks, the Allan Macpherson House will be reopened after changing hands, and will be presenting a unique rendition of ‘Pride and Prejudice.’ A one-of-a-kind play called Elizabeth-Darcy, performed by Hallie Burt and Kate Werneburg, will be showing at the Macpherson House June 19-21. The presentation will launch the reopening of the Macpherson House since being taken over by the County of Lennox and Addington. “It’s really quite unique. It will start outside in the garden and it actually moves through the house.
The performance moves from room to room with the house becoming the stage… You follow the performance as it really becomes part of the house,” said Stephen Paul, Director of Community and Development Services for the county. The two-person cast plays a number of characters throughout the performance. Hallie Burt is a native of Lennox and Addington County and is now an actress in Toronto. Kate Werneburg is an actress and writer. Paul said inviting Burt and Werneburg to the Macpherson House was a great way to celebrate the reopening of the house in a one-of-a-kind way. “We wanted to look at

something that was really unique and really fit the home quite well and this was something that really did that,” said Paul. The presentation of Elizabeth-Darcy launches a busy summer schedule of workshops, concerts and other activities taking place at house throughout the season. Those familiar with the Macpherson House will be in for a pleasant surprise if they choose to come to one of the Elizabeth-Darcy shows, Paul explained, as the county has been working hard to restore the historical home since taking it over in November. “We’ve done some work on the exterior of the house, for the most part. The most

important work that we’ve done is a new paint job for the house. We’ve been working on that for the past two weeks and the house looks great,” he said. The county will continue to restore the house, keeping true to its 1830s roots. Tickets to ElizabethDarcy are $15 and available at the Lennox and Addington County Museum and Archives and online at www.macphersonhouse.ca. Show times will be July 19 at 7 p.m. and June 20-21 both at 2 p.m. and at 7 p.m. Performances are limited to 25 people per show. Join Ontario’s farm and food communities for the celebration Celebrating Local Food Week June 1-7, 2015
In honour of Ontario’s second annual Local Food Week, Farm & Food Care Ontario invites you to join Ontario farmers and food partners in the celebration. Proclaimed under the Local Food Act, the first week of June marks the annual celebration of Local Food Week in Ontario. This year, the week-long celebration is set for June 1-7, with farmers, farm organizations, agribusinesses and government partners hosting events across the province.
Local Food Week gives Ontarians a chance to put a spotlight on the wide variety of local foods and beverages available year-round. Throughout the week, we’ll celebrate those who grow, produce, harvest, buy and sell it. We are fortunate to have access to a wide variety of local fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, eggs, dairy products, processed foods, honey and maple syrup that are readily available and grown or produced close to home. Whether at roadside farm stands and farm markets during the summer or at food retailers throughout the year, buying local has never been easier or more delicious. Local Food Week is an excellent way to bring together the farmers who produce our food, the retailers who sell it, the restaurants who prepare it and those who enjoy it every day. Here are a variety of ways you can join the Local Food Week celebrations: ·Host your own local food feast or barbecue with friends and family, with an entirely locally-sourced menu; ·On June 3 at 8pm ET, join the #loveONTfood Twitter party with farmers and foodies and celebrate all of Ontario’s great foods and beverages; ·Share your love of local food on social media using the #loveONTfood hashtag; ·Support your local farmers by choosing Ontario products all year

‘Vital Signs’ survey distributed to households BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
A survey is being distributed through The Napanee Beaver this week to help prioritize future community spending. Vital Signs is a community initiative that looks at priority areas and programs to develop and support. In order to bring the Vital Signs project to Napanee, the Napanee District Community Foundation has partnered with TransCanada, the Town of Greater Napanee and the Rotary Club of Napanee. Vital Signs will look closely at six areas of focus: health, housing, environment, safety, arts and culture, and recreation. Sandra Iseman, Vital Signs co-ordinator, said surveys can be found in the newspaper or online and can be filled out until the end of the month. “We held a very successful workshop on May 11 and obtained terrific feedback from a number of residents and experts. Our survey, included as a flyer in the Napanee Beaver, runs from June 1st-June 30th,” said Iseman. She encourages everyone to participate in order for people to have a say on how Greater Napanee is developed and where funds will be distributed. “Vital Signs isn’t just a chance for people ages 13 and up to decide where future programming and funding should go, but it’s also an opportunity to discuss, work, and build as a community. Hopefully youth will accept our invitation to
participate and find the process to be a gateway to lifelong civic engagement. But it is our aim overall that everyone be included and that everyone feel ownership of the process and of the outcome,” said Iseman. Since this is Greater Napanee’s first Vital Signs survey, the municipality has chosen the above six topics to review since they are already large areas of focus for the municipality. The information acquired will help determine what needs to be done to help these six areas grow and develop further. “The survey will provide crucial input from residents regarding their opinion or their local knowledge of priority issues, such as homelessness, recreation needs, health issues, etc., which can then be used with key statistical information that will be collected to help us understand the needs of the community,” explained Iseman. “The questions, based on our public workshop input, examine specific issues that are pertinent to Greater Napanee. Survey responses will provide actionable options for organizations and stakeholders to direct funding, programming, shape policy, or provide a framework for collaboration and communication. The questions will address current priority areas or knowledge/service gaps,” she added. A Vital Signs report will be published in the Beaver on Oct. 6 once information from the survey and public meeting have been compiled. “It’s from that point that

Canadian gardeners, garden centres, garden and horticultural organizations and garden-related businesses are invited to create their own celebrations to mark the event. Why not rally your neighbours to visit a local park or public garden? Or work with a local garden centre or hardware dealer to create a special event where proceeds from the sale of certain plants or gardening products are designated to support a local public garden (even a community food garden…). Use your imagination and power of influence around your block or your dinner table to stimulate discussion about the importance of our gardens, both public and private. You can do your part by contacting your local Member of Parliament and voicing your opinion in support of National Garden Days. Take a hard copy of it to bridge club, to your yoga class, your service club, and hand it to your golf buddies. You get the idea. GIBBARD | Former factory owner happy to see the site re-occupied CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Another interesting piece that will remain in the building is a photograph of Almon Douglas working on the spindle carver. Douglas worked with Gibbard for 56 years; his brother, Jimmy Douglas, worked on the band saw for 57 years. “We had about 50 employees that worked over 50 years here,” McPherson explained. “Longevity was almost a given here. We had a 50-year club ever since my
family has had the business, which was in the 1940s… When we closed we were averaging about 35 years a person.” Other documents include photographs of the first shipment of shell boxes from Gibbard for the war effort in 1941; a swing bridge over the river behind the factory built by Gibbards and used by its employees and the public; and a picture of founder John Gibbard . When asked how he felt
about the historical building being turned into condominums, McPherson said he is quite pleased with the progress. “I couldn’t be happier. It’s going to be a real wonderful thing to see the property not sit here vacant,” he said. “Gibbard was always noted for its quality of its furniture, we were high end. So it’s sort of a nice fit that Hank Doornekamp and his group are working on this because they’re known for
quality too. It’s kind of a nice fit or continuation of the tradition in a different form,” McPherson added. Even though the building is for the most part empty, McPherson said he can still picture how it looked and felt when it was in full production. “I’m so used to walking through here when there’s machines running,” he said, walking on the designated walking area out of the way of any machinery. He stopped to say he could

Discussion of a water turbine project has also been proposed for the site. An information open house is being held in the Gibbard Furniture Factory sales office this Tuesday between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
