A long-term accommodation plan for the Limestone District School Board has been circulating which, if adopted as written, could affect several local schools with closures and consolidations. On May 24, LDSB trustees received for information a report, developed by consulting firm Ameresco for the board, detailing the proposed plan. In the Greater Napanee area, the report proposes to amalgamate five elementary schools and to redirect Grade 7 and 8 students to Napanee District Secondary School. According to the long-term accommodation plan (LTAP), which can be found on the LDSB website, the suggestion is to “consolidate Selby PS, Newburgh PS, Centreville PS, Enterprise PS, Tamworth ES and construct a new 374 pupil place replacement school north of Hwy 401, possibly on the Centreville PS site, subject to funding approval.” That plan includes accommodating students from Kindergarten through to Grade 6, while Grades 7 and 8 students would be redirected to NDSS. According to the proposal, elementary students would be redirected to The Prince Charles School, Southview Public School, and the newly-built school; while Selby PS, Newburgh PS, Centreville PS, Enterprise PS and Tamworth ES would be closed.

mally appoint and swear-in Richmond as the newest member of council. In appointing Richmond, council declined holding a by-election for the position, or seeking applications from interested candidates for the position. In a staff report to council, Brooks indicated that a byelection for the councillor position would be at least $30,000 — nearly as much as it would cost for a regular municipal election. During discussion, Councillor Martha Embury suggested that, after the appointment is made, council’s procedural bylaw should be reviewed and amended to include language to guide this and future councils on how to approach filling council vacancies. “In the event this happens again, we can expedite the process, and everyone in the municipality knows where we stand and what the expectations are because it’s clearly written in the procedural bylaw,” she said.

Lack of rain prompts advisory Beaver Staff
Despite recent rainfall, Quinte Conservation says the region is still experiencing lower-than-usual water conditions. The conservation authority declared a Level 1 Low Water Condition for all of its watershed last Thursday. As of yesterday morning, that hadn’t changed. “The recent rain has not been enough to help our current low water conditions. Flows in the Moira, Napanee and Salmon Rivers continue to be extremely low and we need a significant amount of rain to change that,” said Quinte Conservation Water Resources Manager Christine McClure in a press release. That in mind, McClure said residents in the region should be wise about how they use water. “With the potential for a dry summer,
it’s time now to start thinking about conserving water,” she said. “We are asking residents and businesses of the region to reduce water usage by 10 per cent until the supply is replenished. This includes the outside watering of plants and lawns, and washing driveways and sidewalks.” Tips for water conservation can be found on the conservation authority website at www.quinteconservation.ca. A Level 1 Low Water Condition means the potential for water supply problems has been identified. A Level 1 condition is managed through existing programs of conservation authorities, municipalities and other provincial agencies. Low water conditions are ranked on a scale from 1 to 3, with Level 1 being the least severe, and Level 3 being the most severe.

NDSS duo win business grant
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
A pair of enterprising NDSS students have secured a grant from the Ontario government’s Summer Company program and will be running their own business over the summer break. Caleb Fitchett, who is just a few weeks short of finishing Grade 11, will be running ACF Blacksmithing and Welding, while Meghan Storey, who is graduating high school this year, will launch Boo Graphics. They both submitted their business plans to Summer Company and found out earlier this week that they would receive a start-up grant of up to $1,500. If they meet the requirements of the program by working their business throughout the summer and returning to school next fall, they could receive an additional $1,500 for their businesses. Both figure to be a common sight at local markets this summer as well as selling their work online from their home. Fitchett’s art involves turning old railroad spikes into decorative pieces as well as shelves, bottle openers, racks and hangers. He also does custom welding. “I just kind of took an interest in (blacksmithing),” said Fitchett. “I only started the blacksmithing part about a year ago, I started making odds and ends. I’ve been welding since I was 11 or 12 so I just kept going with it.” Though he knows his way around a welding torch, crunching numbers and formulating business plans wasn’t his strong suit. “(Taking NDSS’ Business course) helped a lot,” he said of learning how to launch a business. “They helped me along with
it and how to advertise and things like that.” He says the grant money will go towards helping to advertise his business as well as covering the cost of some of the machinery he’ll need for his workshop. Though he hasn’t taken a business class since his freshman year, he became interested in the Summer Company program when he heard of fellow classmates Aaron Cassidy and Avery Smith, both of which still operate their respective business. Down the road Fitchett hopes he can turn his passion into a full-time career. In the meantime he’s hoping to learn as much as he can this summer and plans to take Nancy Savage’s Grade 12 Business class next semester. He says he plans to launch a Facebook page for ACF Blacksmithing and Welding in the next couple of weeks and will be networking at several arts and crafts event this summer. As for Storey, her specialty is unique graphic tshirts. Among her wide range of designs is a set of patriotic shirts which she’ll launch right before her hometown of Bath’s famous Canada Day parade. She’s teamed with Hart n’ Hart for her threads and is looking to begin selling her shirts by next week. “Something unique, something they can’t buy at a normal store,” she says of her designs. An artist at heart, she is constantly jotting down ideas for her next design. She identified at a young age that she didn’t want to seek out a typical 9-to-5 job. “I just don’t like working in a normal setting,” said Storey. “I like doing my own thing. Since I’m going into animation (next semester at Algonquin College), I wanted to do something art related. I wanted to put my own
art into something that people would want to buy. I thought this was a great way to get started.” She says having Savage as a teacher was a huge help in making contacts and learning the ins and outs of starting a business. With her Summer Company funding secure, she plans to frequent the Bath Sunday Market as well as Napanee’s Hometown Market. She’ll also be taking orders from her Boo Graphics Facebook page, which is
already up-and-running with photos of her designs. Storey says she sees her t-shirt business as a potential side venture she could operate in addition to pursuing a career in animation. Coming from an enterprising family, she says she has plenty of support should she have any questions. Both students were set to receive their funding this week and get started on their summer business, just as school semester wraps up for another year.

Picturing Our Community
Rather than a referendum…
J. Earl Morrison, Owner-Publisher, 1953-1978
As regular readers may know, we’ve spent some ink talking about proposed electoral reform in this space over the last few months. Well, prepare yourselves for some more food for thought. Combined in 1965 It’s the result of two fairly major developments with The Napanee Express (EST. 1861) over the past week on the electoral reform front. We’ve long advocated that, if the Trudeau-led Liband The Deseronto eral government wants to move ahead with changing Post (EST. 1904) the way our federal elections work — and that is, discarding the current first-past-the-post electoral system An independent in favour of, well, something else yet-to-be-determined — it should get the consent of the public in the form of community a referendum. The Conservative Party, and in particular the former local MP for this area, Scott Reid, have newspaper advocated this position as well. It seems we, the Conservatives and Reid may be on some shaky legal ground on that score, however. JEAN MORRISON The former chief electoral officer for Canada, JeanOWNER & Pierre Kingsley, told a few media outlets that holding PUBLISHER a referendum on this question isn’t in keeping with laws that are currently on the books. He said that, SALES MANAGER around the time of the 1992 referendum on the CharSCOTT JOHNSTON lottetown Accord, the Mulroney government passed legislation stating that a referendum can only be held MANAGING EDITOR on issues relating to the Constitution. An electoral SETH DUCHENE reform package isn’t, on the surface, a Constitutional BUSINESS MANAGER matter. DEBBIE MCCANN Assuming Kingsley is correct (and it’s not a given), the government could presumably pass legislation PRODUCTION MANAGER altering the Mulroney government’s law in order to MICHELLE BOWES make a referendum legal. However, the federal LiberACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE als haven’t shown any appetite for a referendum in the DIANE GROSE first place. The possibility of a referendum, however, took a hit even before Kingsley weighed in, when the Liberals ADVERTISING SALES REPannounced they were backing down on their proposed RESENTATIVES: LISA PRESmake-up of a special parliamentary committee LEY, LINDA WARNER . charged with examining electoral reform options. CLASSIFIEDS MANAGER: When the committee was initially proposed, the LiberJANE WRIGHT. Last week, however, the government backed ERS: ASHLEY ESPINOZA, down from that position to make the committee memADAM PRUDHOMME. bership more reflective of the popular vote across Canada in the last election. That means the Liberals, who had six of the 10 positions on the committee, will have only five of 12 spots on the committee — thereby surrendering majority control. The Conservatives will get three seats, the NDP will get two seats, while the Greens and the Bloc Quebecois will each get one seat. This is an improvement, to be sure. However, we doubt it’ll make a referendum more likely. The NDP have said they’re not interested in holding a referendum either — and with the Liberals, they represent more than enough votes on the committee. While a referendum seems unlikely now, there’s no telling what will happen next. Regardless, the committee will have to move quickly if it hopes to meet the government’s deadline of having a legislative proposal on electoral reform within 18 months. If a referendum is off the table, however, we’ll be Napanee Beaver - 40005335 very curious to see what the committee comes up with, The entire content of The Beaver and more specifically, how it will consult and engage is protected by copyright. Staff Picks: The Forgotten Room Karen Scott of the Bath and South Fredericksburgh branches of the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries recently enjoyed The Forgotten Room, a novel of historical romance. Interestingly enough, it was cowritten by three bestselling novelists.
Catherine Coles Coles’ Notes “When three of your favourite authors – in this case Karen White, Beatriz Williams, and Lauren Willig — collaborate on a book, you just know it’s one you’re going to want to read!” exclaims Karen. “And The Forgotten Room certainly didn’t disappoint. “Told in three voices from three different time periods stretching from the late 1800s to the Second World War we learn the stories of Olive, whose family was driven from riches to rags and who signed on as a servant in the mansion her father designed; Lucy, who came to Manhattan from Brooklyn to find the father she’d never known; and Kate, a doctor working in the hospital the same mansion has become, who meets
a young soldier carrying a miniature portrait of a woman who looks exactly like Kate — and is wearing the ruby pendant Kate’s mother handed down to her. What will Kate and her young captain find as they investigate the link between them, and how will it affect their future? “The story is so seamlessly written you’d never know it was written by three different authors,” Karen concludes. “Two of my favourite quotes from the book are: ‘Well, that’s the thing about choices, isn’t it? There are always more to make. I’ve never seen a street where you couldn’t cross to the other side’ and ‘My mother once told me that a lifetime of good

enough was a fair price to pay for a single moment of pure happiness. This is my moment. Don’t take that away from me.’” Booklist describes The Forgotten Room as a book of “strong female characters, swoon-worthy romance, and red herrings abound in this marvelous genre blend of romance, historical fiction, and family saga.” You can reserve it regular print, large print and e-book formats from your local branch of the County of L&A Libraries or online at www.countylibrary.ca. 4-H Dairy members view latest technology The 23 Dairy members of the L&A Dairy Club kicked off their third meeting last month at Cloverview Farms owned by Robert, Jeff, and Richard Sonneveld of Inverary. This meeting allowed the members to visit one of only two dairy farms in Ontario with a robotic milking system in a tie stall operation. The robotic milker is called a Roboleo produced by Milkomax which travels up and down the barn on a rail moving from cow to cow every seven to eight minutes. When positioned behind a cow, it will lower a ramp over the manure alley and use
free-spinning rollers to reach and pressure the shoulders, guiding the cow backwards. From here on the robotic milker will clean the teats and place the milker on the cow. The Sonneveld brothers installed two Roboleos just a few months ago and they are loving it. Their two robots are in charge of milking their herd of 125 cows, about 2.2 times a day. With the Roboleos, the Sonneveld brothers have seen an improvement in the herd’s health, with a lower overall somatic cell count and a more relaxed work schedule, allowing for more fami-
ly time. At the same time they are quick to emphasize the need for increased management due to the higher technology. An array of information about their daily milking routine can be seen on their cell phone from anywhere in the world. As well, the 4-H members got to see the feeding program for the cows. A few years ago, the Sonnevelds installed an automatic railcart feeding system. This system delivers the feed to the cows three times a day. Lastly, the dairy members viewed the automatic calf feeder. This calf feeder automatically mixes the
milk replacement powder for the calves, allowing them to drink as much as they require daily based on their ear tag identification. It records the amount which each calf consumes and this allows the farmer to quickly detect any calves off feed. The next meeting of the L&A 4-H Dairy Club was planned for May 31 when the members would be involved in the post-mortem of a dairy animal and learn other animal health management tips. New organ for St. Mary Magdalene On Sunday, May 29, we gathered to say “goodbye” to a very old friend. After 140 years, it is time to retire our Karn pipe organ. It was played for the very last time that Sunday. Our organ might be the oldest pipe organ in Greater Napanee. Built by the Karn company of Woodstock, Ont., it has an interesting history, dating back to 1879. This organ will be replaced by a new digital organ, with the sound of a pipe organ. St. Mary Magdalene has a rich history of male choirs, from the late 1800s
until the 1980s. Since that time, we have always been proud of our mixed choirs, and in recent years we were able to develop a splendid junior choir. Thanks to our wonderful old organ, this was only enhanced by the marvelous acoustics of our church. We have actively begun an ambitious fundraising campaign to purchase the replacement of our old friend. Our parish council has decided to honour the tradition of our organ music ministry by turning to the mar-
vels of modern digital technology. Our new organ, the Phoenix Model PT345 has been ordered; it will have the full range of pipe organ sound. Any inquiries can be directed to The Church of St. Mary Magdalene, email St.Mary.Magdalene@bellnet.ca or phone 613-354-3141. ■ Ontario Hydro announced that it was planning to take over the operation of the electricity grid immediately surrounding to Napanee. The area in question was about 584square miles around the Napanee area that was had been operated by the Napanee Public Utilities Commission for the past 39 years. A.M. Pedersen, the manager of Ontario Hydro’s eastern region, said the move was being made for a number of reasons, including the introduction of centralized data processing, faster and more sophisticated work equipment, more modern and automatic distribution equipment plus substantial savings in operating costs. ■ Napanee town council voted unanimously to have the Ontario Police Commission conduct an investigation of the Napanee Police Service’s administration. Deputy-Reeve W.R. Douglas said the town had “no beef” with anyone within the police service. That said, there was a prevailing feeling on council that the police service wasn’t being operated as efficiently as possible, and a fresh, outside perspective might be in order. The deputy-reeve said he thought the town might have a better police force if “we understood what we should be doing.”
30 Years Ago June 11, 1986 ■ Two Toronto men were awaiting trial after being charged in connection with the robbery of the Tamworth CIBC branch. Forty-year-old Joseph Edward McCormick and 38-year-old Wilson Roy Stairs were facing charges of robbery, forceable confinement, use of firearms in commission of an indictable offence and being unlawfully at large from prison. Several staff members of the bank branch had allegedly been confined during the robbery. The robbery had taken place the previous August. The trial was expected to get started on July 3. ■ A 17-year-old Tyendinaga Township boy died as the result of a freak accident at a truck stop off Loyalist Road near Highway 401. The teen was crushed by a 300-pound soft drink vending machine. He had apparently been trying to extract change from the machine, or trying to get a soda from the machine, when it toppled over and pinned him underneath.

SCHOOLS | No decisions made by school board in response to report CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The plan also includes the potential closure of Ernestown Secondary School in Odessa. Students could be redirected to Bayridge SS, Sydenham HS, and NDSS. “Implementation of the recommendations would cost approximately $16.5 million for new construction; reduce the facility renewal investment by approximately $31.4 million; and result in an overall net savings of $14.9 million over the forecast period,” the plan states online. Debra Rantz, LDSB Director of Education, said no action has been taken to move forward with the LTAP yet. Another meeting will be
held in the fall to determine to determine next steps. “In September 2016 the board will meet with municipal and community partners and we’ll share the plan and share and receive relevant planning information. Then the plan could be adjusted following that meeting. Senior staff would be required to provide an additional report to trustees for board approval before any consultation or an accommodation review could begin,” Rantz explained. The LTAP is a review all of LDSB schools. “It’s designed to accommodate and address students and program needs over the next 15 years. The plan takes in to account project enroll-
ment, facility utilization, facility conditions, transportation, new school constructions, boundary adjustments and student programming,” Rantz said. The news of possible school closures has not been welcome among some parents. Many of the smalltown schools have been open for decades and parents do not relish the idea of the schools being closed and their children being sent to schools in other communities. “I grew up in the area and I went to Selby School. When my husband and I had our home in Napanee, we sold our home to move to Selby specifically so our children could go to Selby

school,” said Norah Brien, a mother of Selby PS students. Brien started a Facebook page this week called, ‘Save Selby Public School Fr om Closure,’ which has nearly 200 members. “I know at least six other parents on the Facebook Group that also moved to the area specifically to have their kids go to Selby PS,” Brien added. She hopes to start a committee of concerned parents with representatives from all of the affected schools. According to the study, the plan would provide “more effective use of secondary schools over the long term, improving overall board-wide utilization by more than 11 per cent over-
all on the secondary panel.” The study suggested it would also allow for better student programming and more funding opportunities for the board. Rantz reiterated that the school board has not committed to any course of action as of yet and that the trustees must first approve a consultation plan or accommodation review before the plan, or an alternative, can move forward. “It’s really our responsibly to be fiscally responsible but it’s also our responsibility to provide quality and equitable programming for our students and we have to ensure that we have the numbers in place, that we have proper conditions in
place so students get the best education we can give them,” said Rantz. “This is just a starting point,” added Jane Douglas, LDSB Communications Officer. “There could be plans that we don’t even know about, or discovered along the way, if the review is deemed necessary by trustees. There could be consolidations and new schools in all of our districts. Certainly, there have been a new school and consolidation suggestions in the Greater Napanee area.” For more information, and to view the LTAP, visit www.limestone.on.ca. The LTAP can be found under the ‘Newsroom’ section on the LDSB home page.

Refugee family adjusting nicely to new home Group puts out call for volunteers for summer months
BY SETH DUCHENE Editor
By all accounts at a meetand-greet party held in their honour on Wednesday night in Selby, the Hosni family — refugees from war-torn Syria — are settling in just fine in Napanee. That said, the Lennox and Addington Refugee Group Enthusiasts are looking to line up a few more volunteers for the next few months. “We’re going to have a very busy summer with the kids going to summer camp every day, and also the parents continuing ESL (Englsh as a second language train-
ing),” said LARGE’s volunteer co-ordinator, Jane Vellone, at Wednesday night’s get-together. “One of our main goals right now is to find drivers. It will be in the Napanee area, most of them, but we’re going to need a lot of drivers. Also, in August, the kids won’t be in camp or in school, so we’re looking for activities, ideas, anybody taking them out to (a local attraction) or something like that… just to keep them busy in August. Those are sort of our main goals right now, that’s what we’re looking at.” If the summer goes as smoothly as the first few months the Hosni family has been in Canada, it should be
a good summer. “Things have gone really great. We haven’t had an issue finding drivers or anything, and we really haven’t had any issues with many confusions or mix-ups. It’s been really great, the support of the community has been fantastic,” said Vellone. Speaking English without the benefit of a translator, Majed Hosni — who owned a jewelry store in Damascus before being forced to flee the country for Jordan in 2013 with his wife Razan, two sons and two daughters — told the Beaver he and his family have been made to feel at home in Napanee. “I like Napanee, and the people in Napanee
are very (welcoming),” he said. “Napanee is very nice. Peaceful.” The children — Mahmoud, 12, Mohammed, 10, Royaa, 7, and Aseel, 5 — are making good progress as well getting used to their new home. “They’re picking up English very quickly,” said Vellone. “The boys are a little older, so they’re playing soccer, and the girls are a little younger for some of these activities yet. But, they’ve been doing great at school, from what I’ve heard, and adapting well.” Those interested in lending a helping hand can contact Vellone at jane.vell@gmail.com.

Busy summer ahead for Big Brothers
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington have no intentions of having a quiet, leisurely summer. In fact, the charitable organization has a pretty packed schedule for the summer months, including a charge of address. As of Aug. 15 they will move from their 1344 Princess St. headquarters to a much bigger space located at 817 Division St. in
Kingston. “Everything for us will be better for us in the new space,” said Peter Cory, executive director with Big Brothers Big Sisters KFLA. “We are going to a much larger space. It is a much more modern building.” Cory says the extra space will allow them more rooms to meet with their clients in a more private setting in a much more timely manner. Even while preparing for the move they will be busy all summer as they step up their recruitment for ‘senior’
aged mentors. For the purposes of their program, Big Brothers Big Sisters considers anyone over the age of 45 to be senior. Thanks to a grant from the Kingston Community Foundation, they will be able to dedicate more staff hours to recruiting mentors aged 45 and older. “We absolutely love our younger mentors, they’re fantastic, we have a lot of Queen’s students, St. Lawrence College students,” said Cory. “We actually have a St. Lawrence College stu-
dent that served 12 mentees in Napanee alone in our ISM (in-school mentoring) program. The thing with students is they’re gone for months and months out of the year. Sometimes there’s an issue where they can’t commit to more than a year. People who are in their 40s and 50s have more predictable schedules. That can be a really great thing in terms of them being a part of a mentoring relationship.” Cory says the organization hopes to get the word out this summer and attract
more local mentors who have the time to commit a couple of hours a week to spend with a youth who could use a positive adult role model in their live. Anyone interested in learning more about the program can call 613-5441621. Last but not least Big Brothers Big Sisters KFLA will get their busy summer season underway with their second annual Dine Out Day fundraiser on June 24. That day, which is the first Friday after the official start of summer, will see several restau-
rants around Kingston as well as Napanee’s Shoeless Joe’s raising money for the charity. “They give us a percentage of their proceeds from that day,” explains Cory. “It worked great last year and we’re looking forward to doing it again this year.” Big Brothers Big Sisters connects trained adult mentors with Kingston and area youths aged six to 16. They spend one-on-one time with the children to give them an outlet to talk about what’s on their mind.

Looking back at automotive tailfins If anyone happens to have access to a 1937 Batman comic book, he will note that the caped crusader’s automobile featured a huge fin protruding from the roof and stretching as far as the rear
bumper — an unusuallystyled vehicle indeed. That was mere fantasy. But, in that same year, the first sprout of a tailfin on a commercially-built vehicle appeared on the 1937 Cadil-
lac Fleetwood. It was rather a mild version, more like the turned up corner on a dogeared book cover, but it was there. Even though GM designer Harley Earl is creditted with introducing this

blasted the industry as well: “…automakers superficially changed the aesthetics… making cars bigger and more powerful and more glitzy, driving them to dizzying heights of frivolity and absurdity. Functionless tailfins soared to the heavens, and chrome decoration spread like a cancer!” Perhaps these critiques — or, just the sense of “enough is enough” — fostered a toning-down trend the following year. GM especially preferred a ‘flattening’ of any rear decks — except for the Caddy, which still emphasized the ‘rudder’ look. The trend to more modest fins continued, until by 1964, only the Cadillac took one last kick at this particular kind of styling, with a rather modest rendition. However, for the next 15 years their rear fenders resembled a flattened down version, when finally in 1979 only the taillights extended beyond the trunk line.

Ailing vet gets ‘morale boost’ from comrades BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
Ashley Espinoza-Staff
Corporal Joe Garrie, pictured centre, received a Quilt of Valour Sunday for his service to Canada. From left are Mark Nemeth and Don Oliphant of Quilts of Valour; Garrie; Susan MacKenzie, Bath Legion president; Tom Braxton, veteran and friend to Garrie; and Chris Ingersoll, Napanee Legion president.
A Napanee veteran who is now fighting cancer was surprised with a Quilt of Valour on the weekend for his years of dedicated service to Canada. Quilts of Valour Canada is a non-profit organization that supports injured Canadian Armed Forces members, past and present, with handmade quilts of comfort. Quilts are made by volunteers and distributed to veterans through a nomination process. “I thought you could use a morale boost,” said Tom Braxton, a veteran and friend to Corporal Joe Garrie, who received a Quilt of Valour by surprise on Sunday afternoon. “This organization, it really lifted my spirits when they came and surprised me.
It’s always an ambush and it’s always fun to see somebody’s face when they’re getting a quilt.” Braxton said he decided to nominate Garrie after he posted a status online on May 5 about the uncertainty of his chemotherapy treatments. “That’s what got my wheels turning,” Braxton said. Don Oliphant, Quilts of Valour representative for southwest Ontario, presented a quilt to Garrie in a presentation made in Garrie’s home Sunday afternoon. “Tom made a request that I come and make a presentation to you. Quilts of Valour’s… mission is to give injured and past veterans a quilt of comfort, which is to be taken as a big ‘thank you’ from everybody in Canada for your past service,” said Oliphant. “Today we’re going to give a hug of appreciation to Joe for his service,” he continued, as he and Braxton draped the quilt across Garrie’s shoulders. “I am shocked,” said Garrie, who has served his country through military and police service. “I grew up with a family who did what they could during World War Two. It was engrained in me: God, country, and family, in that order. I have been in service of one sort or another my whole life.” The Quilt of Valour Garrie was presented with included a label from the organization, which reads: ‘handmade with love, respect, and gratitude for your sacrifice to Canada. May the hugs stitched into this quilt give you comfort, strength, and love.’

Mite Express shine in Cobourg Napanee wins rain-shortened tournament Beaver Sports
eavy rain was the only thing that could slow down the Napanee Express Mite girls team over the weekend, as they slugged and pitched their way to a tournament win in Cobourg. Though the finals would be washed out, the Express were 3-0 on the weekend when the skies opened up. As they were in first place at the time of the storm, the Express were crowned as tournament winners. In what would turn out to be their final game of the tournament, Napanee blanked the Whitby Eagles 2-0. Kristen Sutton and Danielle Barker teamed up to deliver an ace like per-
H
formance, striking out 15 Eagles combined. Barker was able to pitch her way out of a bases loaded jam in the final inning, striking out the final two batters to seal the win. Napanee scored early in this one as Keyana Whan singled through the middle to drive in Jordyn Watson. Emily Liscumb added a huge insurance run in the top half of the final inning, driving in Emma Hagerman with a solid single. Though their showdown with Whitby was a pitcher's duel, that wasn't the case in their first two games of the tournament. Napanee opened the tournament with a 15-3 win over the Port Perry Angels. Sutton picked up the win
and also connected on a home run in the first inning. Kayla Gendron had a hit and stole two bases, while Hannah Tulloch also added a single. Barker closed out the mercy rule shortened game with a flawless final inning. In the second game the Express routed the host Cobourg Angels 11-2. Barker picked up the win and had an RBI single to help her own cause. Sutton had an RBI while Whan knocked in two. Liscumb was 2-for-2 with a double. The Express will next host a double-header on Sunday, taking on the Port Perry Angels at the Napanee Fairgrounds, starting at 11 a.m.

Sierra Bonsall and Brody Ford were named the NDSS Golden Hawks’ C.S. Froud trophy winners, which is given annually to the top female and male athletes.
NDSS toasts top athletes Bonsall, Ford earn C.S. Froud BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
DSS Golden Hawks athletic teams should have no shortage of motivation next season as they strive to take the next step in a variety of disciplines. That was the message delivered at the high school’s year end awards banquet as they reflected on several athletic accomplishments both individually and as a team. The school’s most successful sport was curling as all three of their teamsmixed, men’s and girls’, qualified for EOSSAA. The Hawks saw four of their teams-girls’ hockey, junior boys’ rugby, girls’ rugby and senior boys’ football, reach the KASSAA finals only to fall short in the winner-take-all game.
N
All of those teams will return a strong core of players as they look to finish what they started in 201516. The girls’ hockey team came painfully close to capturing the KASSAA crown, battling their rival Holy Cross to a 1-0 loss after several shootout rounds back in February. In football the senior team etched it’s way into the school’s history books by reaching the AA senior finals. Matched up against the heavily favoured La Salle Black Knights, they were shutout 31-0 back in November. The season still went down as a massive success for the school’s football program, which just a few years ago had been forced to fold due to a lack of interest among the studentathletes. They did at least secure the first senior boys football banner to hang in the gym that says ‘KASSAA finalists’. More recently, both the girls and junior boy’s rugby teams took part in the KAS-
SAA finals, played in Kingston in late May. The girls were bested 22-5 by the Regi Panthers while the boys lost 29-19, also to Regi. Individually the Hawks had plenty of stand out athletes. Meghan Mosgrove (gymnastics), Leah Hill (track and field), Sierra Manley (tennis), Joanna Leonard (tennis) and Carter Free (cross-country) were all recognized as Outstanding Individual Athletes by winning a KASSAA championship in their respective sport and qualifying for OFSAA. A new football award was debuted this year, known as the Leroy Blugh MVP award. Named for the CFL Hall-of-Famer who once attended the school, the first recipient was Colsen Bertrand. Unfortunately, Blugh was unable to be on hand to present the award as he had to attend the Ottawa RedBlacks’ training camp.

People relocate for various reasons. Many relocate for professional opportunities, while others relocate to pursue their educations. And while some may relocate to enjoy a lower cost of living, others may find themselves relocating to satisfy their sense of adventure. Regardless of why a person is relocating, doing so without preparing for the move can make the transition that much more difficult. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, roughly 19 percent of the 35.9 million people one year and over who moved between 2012 and 2013 did so for a job-related reason. Relocating to a new city for a job is different than moving from one home to another within the same community. Relocating to a new city can be a life-changing event that requires planning and maybe even a little luck to make it work.

• Examine your finances. Moving is expensive, and it can be even more expensive when moving to an entirely new city. If you are moving to pursue career opportunities but don’t yet have a job offer in hand, examine your finances and work out a worst-case scenario in the event that your job hunt takes longer than you hoped for. Unless you have a benefactor who can help you pay your bills and avoid debt while you look for a job, make sure you have several months’ worth of living expenses saved up before moving. • Research the job market. Certain cities have more opportunities for people in certain fields than others, so make sure the city you plan to relocate to is a place where you will have ample opportunities in your chosen line of work. Otherwise you might find yourself settling for a career you don’t like or relocating again to a job market more accommodating to someone in your field. • Research the real estate market. Before hitting the road and heading for your new home, research the real estate market in that area. Try to find out the average rental price via online forums or even
online newspaper classified sections. Find out if people tend to live with roommates or go it alone in the city you’re relocating to. If you are moving to a city where you know very few people or no one at all, consider becoming someone’s roommate. The right roommate can provide an instant social network and help you learn the ropes of your adopted home. If you plan to live alone and rent, recognize that many landlords will require a guarantor before renting to tenants with no income. • Don’t be shy. Unless you are moving to a place where you already have a built-in social network, you should expect to encounter some loneliness upon arriving in your new location. Resolve to make the most of all your new home has to offer by joining a social organization, connecting with your university’s alumni group or volunteering with local charities. If you have a job lined up, sign up for company-sponsored outings or teams. Relocating to a new city can produce mixed feelings of anxiety and excitement. Planning ahead and doing some homework can help you as you transition to your new home. (MCC)
