Turbine plan challenged at meetings

Group outlines ‘iconic’ agenda

MPP Hillier among residents protesting Amherst I. proposal BY ASHLEY FOLEY Staff Reporter

A pair of public informations sessions regarding the proposed Amherst Island Wind Energy Project attracted a number of concerned residents, who were eager to air their misgivings about the project About 15 representatives from Algonquin Power Co, Stantec and Windlectric, were in attendance. These organizations are working together to implement 33-38 wind turbines on Amherst Island. The tower height is proposed to be larger than those on Wolfe Island. The hub is to be 99.5 metres, with a blade length of 55 metres, making the rotor sweep area about 10,000 square metres long, with rotational speeds of six to 13 rpms. But the size of the turbines was not the only concern during the public meeting. Many island residents attended the two meetings – one on Amherst Island last Wednesday and one in Bath the next evening — to voice concerns about construction, island transformation, health risks and property devaluation, among other concerns. Despite a protest held during the meeting in Bath, Jeff Norman, vice president

of Algonquin Power Co., said he felt more residents were now in favour of the project, compared to the public meetings held in November 2012. “There seems to definitely be a turn from when we did this in November of last year, where people were asking more conceptual questions on the project to now asking very practical questions about, ‘How are you going to get this turbine from Point A to Point B,’” said Norman. He said construction concerns have also been brought to his attention, including how production of the turbines would affect the ferry and daily traffic. Norman said Algonquin would use a barge to transport materials to the island without affecting the ferry. However, this will also bring about 11,000 truckloads of materials islanders don’t want brought in. According to the Amherst Island Wind Project website, 130,000 combined cubic metres of granular will be brought in, along with 15,000 cubic metres of sand, 4,000 cubic metres of insolated clear stone, 500 cubic metres of road improvement clear stone, and 18,000 cubic metres of combined concretes.

Napanee’s Multicultural Festival Committee announced it has expanded this year’s festival in celebration of its 10th anniversary. As part of that ‘reveal’, the first of four 2013 community icons was also announced. Stafford Murphy, chair of the Multicultural Festival Committee, and Cortwright Christian, another committee member, addressed Greater Napanee council on Tuesday, stating this year’s festival will be a three-day celebration, including a gala. “To mark this significant achievement the multicultural festival will, for one year only, be expanded one day for a three-day festival and be held from June 20-22 at the Strathcona Paper Centre,” said Murphy. A gala will be held on June 20 at the SPC banquet hall, including cultural foods from all over the world. “The highlight of the evening will be the induction of four new community icons,” said Murphy.

Town of Deseronto

Council puts land sales on front burner BY ASHLEY FOLEY Staff Reporter

OWN of Deseronto council and staff have a number of initiatives underway to improve and revitalize the community, including Centennial Park upgrades, a proposed new marina and selling surplus lands with a waived development fee. A development fee can range between $3,500$7,500 for a residential lot in the area, or up to $80,000 for a subdivision. With these fees being waved, developers can put that money toward capital expenses. “What we’re trying to do now is sell those properties and hopefully have people build on them,” said Town of Deseronto Mayor Norman Clark. “This is the first phase of an investment attraction

strategy. There’s going to be a lot of other initiatives that come out of this to try and facilitate development,” said Dana Valentyne, community development officer for the Town of Deseronto. She said there could be more incentives offered by the municipality, alongside the dropped development fee. There are about 14 surplus lands to be sold, ranging from residential to commercial and small to large lots, with potential of subdivision expansion. Many of those properties are located in the Culbertson Tract land claim area. “I think the majority is actually located within the claim, probably about 70 per cent,” said Valentyne. She said there would not be an impact on the sale of lands within the land claim area. “Not at all. It’s business as usual as far as the feder-

al government is concerned. It would have to be listed as a condition for any interested parties, they would have to be informed. But aside from our duty to inform, it doesn’t prevent the fair-market sale of any properties,” said Valentyne. With development fees waived, Clark said it’s a win-win for both the municipality and its developers. “As soon as we sell that property, then we start to get revenue from it through taxation. At the present time, we absolutely are not. It’s just sitting there and we don’t get anything from it,” said Clark. “Hopefully with properties sold we’ll get revenues through the taxes. Deseronto has a low tax base at the present time because of the lack of development. So what we’re trying to do is push development,” he contin-

ued. With the closure of the Deseronto marina and the ongoing land claim negotiations, the municipality has not seen much development in the past few years. However, that has started to change. The community centre now has a fitness centre, among other services, and the municipality is working vigorously to get a new marina. “We’re hoping everything will go well so we can re-open a marina in Deseronto,” said Clark. “I came here in 1972 and the marina was just packed. If you wanted to tie your boat up and stay overnight, unless you were at that marina by mid afternoon, don’t even bother trying because it would be filled.” The municipality is also pushing a new revitalization program in the downtown core, which Valentyne said has already

improved the municipality, including the business sector. “It’s recognizing a change in the times. One hundred years ago Deseronto depended heavily on industrial operations. I think this is the first step in moving forward with development,” she said. Residential and tourism development will be large factors in ongoing improvements within Deseronto, which Valentyne said has already begun. “Downtown commercial is already happening with the emergence of the galleries and the dinning establishments and the antique and collectable stores,” she said. Sharon Sharpe, the Town of Deseronto’s realtor who will be selling surplus lands, said affordable housing has attracted young families and couples to Deseronto. Clarke said these initiatives, along with development on the town’s surplus lands that are sold, would help to offer these demographics with more activities and local entertainment. Surplus lands have not been posted for sale yet and Sharpe could not give approximate prices but

expects them to be listed in the next few weeks. The municipality has already begun planning for future development with increased water and sewer services. “When you have more houses and buildings, you’re going to need more water and sewer. We have an $8 million project that should hopefully be hitting the ground at the latter part of this year. It’s an $8 million upgrade to the water and sewer facility,” said Clark. Valentyne said there are another 30 or so vacant lots within the municipality, which are privately owned. These also range from small, residential lots to large lots with potential for commercial or subdividing use. Those who own vacant lots can contact Valentyne at the municipality either to discuss development options or prospective new property buyers, if interested in selling. Sharpe said she too would be willing to sit down with anyone interested in buying or selling lands. “We’re open to discuss other ways that we can entice developers to come in. We’re willing to work with them,” said Sharpe.

Decorating Q & AÊs

Core Area Advisory Committee

Group looks for ‘great’ by Your Local Paint & Paper Experts Gr. Napanee videos COLOUR MATCHING BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

What exactly is it that makes the town of Greater Napanee so great? Armed with a camera, the Core Area Advisory Committee Website and Social Media Project Team has taken to the streets to find out. They’re on a mission to produce four short videos of residents answering that question, which will then be uploaded to the town's Facebook page. The first of the four planned videos has been uploaded, featuring two young ice skating girls professing their love of outdoor skating in Napanee. “It’s the same group that worked on developing the Facebook page, they did the photo contest and the lip dub video,” said Lyndsay Tee, CAAC co-ordinator. “This was just another project to get rolling and hopefully another way to attract people to the Facebook page.” Late last year the CAAC produced a short video of Napanee residents dancing and singing along to Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City’s song ‘Good Time,’ which was well received on the town’s page. They also hosted a photo contest, which encouraged residents to submit their best shots taken around town. In the works right now is a video highlighting tobogganing in Springside Park as

well as people walking dogs along the river. “The main one that we’re working on that we’re hoping to get local businesses to help with is a shot in the downtown core,” said Tee. “It’ll feature people walking through the downtown into the different shops, explaining why Greater Napanee is so great.” No timeline for the video shoot has been set, but Tee is asking any interested businesses to contact her at Ltee@greaternapanee.com. They’ll then arrange a time to shoot some footage in their store. The videos will serve as a great way for local shop owners to get the word out about what they offer and encourage people to shop local. The CAAC’s main goal is to increase the internet traffic to the Town of Greater Napanee Facebook page, which promotes events in the community. Fans of the page are always encouraged to upload videos that showcase the beauty of the town. “(The CAAC) thought a good way to get people interacting and looking on the website and Facebook is to do up some fun videos,” said Tee. “The videos are going to be sort in length, that way it’s not like you have to sit and watch something that's quite long. It’s just short clips to get people’s attention and hopefully everybody enjoys it.” To find the page online, type Town of Greater Napanee into the Facebook search bar on your web browser.

Colour matching is an art that our Team has become known for. There is no doubt that our Team surpasses expectations. We never waiver on our commitment to go the extra mile for our clients and colour matching happens to be an area where our passion is at its highest. We are very proud of what we have and continue to accomplish. Many weeks present dozens of sophisticated matches requested by both homeowners and contractors. And each year changing paint formulations create technical challenges in achieving accurate, invisible touch-ups. Characteristics such as sheen level, elasticity, opaqueness, tint quality, base quality, fillers and VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) levels are factors to every match request. Keep in mind that when most clients arrive with a match request, the majority of the knowledge we require is not known by the client. Therefore, the process begins with an investigative stage to formulate the knowledge we require to perform our little miracle. Some clients wonder why our Team requests a day to complete the specific colour match. They have knowledge of the computerized colour matching systems within the industry and may have even witnesses the use of one. These systems are extremely helpful but, please do not be fooled by their presence. At best the computers only complete a small percentage of the process. To date, there is still nothing to replace the matching ability plus the experience of a good colour matching technician who can adjust the computer derived colour with miniscule amounts of tint to get it just right. In closing, if you are rushed and “close” is good enough, let our Team know when you place your order. We will match it quickly and to the best of our ability with one of our two computer matching systems. However, if you seek our “just right” end result, which is better than “close” and you are happy to wait a day, leave it with us and let us knock your socks off! We can perform little miracles… it just takes some time.

Picturing Our Community

The ‘scoop’ on civic pride Civic pride manifests itself in many ways. So, too, does a lack of civic pride. In this space and throughout this newspaper, we celebrate examples of our civic pride — such as the recent downtown light display, or the latest fundraiser, or youth sports, or countless other events. However, one need only walk along some of our streets to see that civic pride is more important to some than it is to others. We’re talking about that very small but very noticeable segment of pet owners who feel as though the right place for their dog to ‘do their duty’ is on the sidewalk — and no cleanup is necessary. In the grand scheme, of course, this is no big deal. But at the same time, it is. In fact, a few local residents have even come into our office to complain about downtown dog poop. We’re not the only ones who have noticed this ugly trend. And it’s more than a lack of consideration. We’d argue that it’s symbolic: we’re hard pressed to think of another practice that shows such a complete disdain for one’s fellow citizens than this. Should more respectful residents have to watch where they walk for fear of a nasty surprise? Certainly not on a sidewalk, they shouldn’t. Should visitors to our community be treated to a stinky leftover from one of our more careless dog owners? No, they shouldn’t. Should municipal employees follow after dog owners and do the job for them? Absolutely not. What is so ridiculous/disappointing/embarrassing is this completely preventable. Just grab a plastic bag before you go out, and scoop up the poop. Simple, right? Too much trouble for some, obviously. This isn’t tough, folks. Just stoop and scoop. Our sidewalk is not your dog’s toilet.

Farmers need more than promises It’s a critical time for Ontario’s new provincial government. Following a throne speech that some critics suggested was “vague,” Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne will be expected to reveal details about her government’s plan for Ontario. The Standing Committee on Finance conducts hearings in the lead up to the new provincial budget, and the Ontario Federation of Agriculture plans to once again appear before the committee and the finance minister to provide input on the next provincial budget. With a mission to enable prosperous and sustainable farms, the OFA has some ideas for how Ontario should budget

Mark Wales OFA Comment spending in areas of agriculture, food and rural affairs. The Ontario agri-food industry contributes $33 billion annually to the Ontario economy and represents 10 per cent of the province’s entire workforce with 700,000 jobs. And, the OFA always makes an effort when appearing before the Standing Committee on Finance, to be specific and speak to a limited number of issues. By outlining proposals that align with broader government priorities, it is possible for farmers and

the government to achieve success. This year, the OFA is focusing on four key issues in our discussions with government, and our discussions during the budgetary consultations will be consistent with that. First, OFA stresses the importance of investments in rural infrastructure. Properly maintained roads, bridges and culverts allow farmers to bring their inputs in and their products out of their farm businesses. Access to health care, schools and other services that our counterparts in urban centres have access to are also key to keeping rural communities thriving.

Serenity in Asian decor Recently a friend and her son visited me from Korea while they were visiting their family. It made me think of Asian design and the beauty of its interiors. Although I admire the style, I could not myself live with its design. I’m far too much of a collector of treasured finds. I am by no means a hoarder, but I value great works of art. I appreciate those that choose this simple-yet-elegant interiors. To create Asian interiors, we should first look to the world’s largest continent for inspiration and ideas. It takes its design from Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and other eastern cultures. Their style is exotic and intriguing. Asian interiors are designed to bring peace, balance and serenity to the space, which is kept simple and uncluttered. If you love to travel, or just have a taste for the exotic and unusual, then you will love an Asian interior design style in your home. Asian design influences contemporary interiors with Zen spaces for relaxation, feng shui furniture arrangements, lacquered boxes or silk Chinoiserie wallpaper. Needless to say, Asian home designs vary greatly. A room could hint at an Eastern influence with a Buddha sculpture and prayer beads, or completely recreate the feel of a traditional Asian home. Asian-style furniture and accessories such as tatami mats, tansu style cabinets and shoji screens create a Japanese aesthetic, while red lacquer, foo dogs and paper lanterns add Chinese style. Many people are looking to simplify their lives and one way to do this is to simplify their surroundings. For centuries, Asian cultures have lived their lives surrounded by simple, yet elegant, fur-

nishings, furniture and art. To incorporate Asian style design into your home, consider the following elements: Use of Colour One of the most dramatic characteristics of Asian décor is the use of colour and the use of natural hues. From the deep, lush green landscapes of southeast Asia to the ethereal, misty mountain ranges of China and the turquoise beaches of the North Pacific, Asian interior décor is largely influenced by nature. Select naturally dark woods with shinny lacquers, bamboo rugs or window blinds and earthy greens. For Chinese interiors, bold red is a dominant colour as it represents good luck. Furniture is typically shinny black lacquered wood. For Japanese style décor, natural tones of brown, grey and tan are popular. Accents in most Asian decors include gold, either as trim or wall colour. Multi-Purpose Furniture With space at a minimum in many Asian interiors, furniture that serves multiple purposes is prominent. A futon provides seating and sleeping in one piece of furniture. A wooden trunk with many drawers provide out-ofsight storage and serves as a tabletop. Most Asian cultures decorate their homes in a very minimalistic style. Go light with your decorative items and get rid of any clutter with carefully placed organizers. Go Feng Shui The Chinese geomancy system is often cited by home décor enthusiasts when explaining furniture arrangement and how to position different elements in order to receive positive chi, or energy. Regardless of your beliefs, utilizing feng shui techniques can help you to eliminate

Design Time clutter and improve the balance within your home. Texture Asian interiors have natural wood that is highly polished to a mirror shine. Japanese decors use lots of luminous paper surfaces and natural rocks. Bamboo, a large gras,s is used for furniture, picture frames, window shades and containers. Texture can also be seen I their rugs, window treatments and soft furnishings. Embrace Nature Natural plants and cuttings provide texture and artistic expression in Asian interiors. Bamboo plants in both small and large pots are adorned with red and gold tassels. They are found in Chinese style homes. Meticulously manicured bonsai plants are found in Japanese style homes. Water provides an important influence in Asian interiors and the delicate sound of falling water and the peaceful look of standing water with fish are prominent in Asian interiors. Windows Window treatments serve to bring balance into an Asian style room. Generally, if the decorative elements are

elaborate, the window treatments should be simple. However, if the colour palette is neutral, you might add colourful or patterned window treatments. General Japanese window treatments use simple woven curtains or bamboo or wood blinds. You might see more elaborate and ornate window treatments with tassels and texture in a Chinese décor. Other Accessories Floor coverings is the foundation for Asian interiors, whether it’s a tatami mat in a Japanese room or a beautiful floral wool rug in a Chinese interior. Furniture and fabric colours enhance and draw at the colours in the flooring. With space in Asian interiors at a minimum, floor screens are a major element of the décor. A shoji screen can provide a window cover, serve as a room divider, or hide an unattractive corner. For centuries Asian style and culture has left its image on the people’s minds for their ethnic designs, simple furnishings, furniture and art. Asian décor elements are exquisite blend with simple yet stylish features which are incorporated to bring peace and serenity. Resist the temptation to combine too many pieces or elements of Asian décor into one room. Simplicity and tranquility are key and essential to a truly authentic Asian style room.

OFA FROM PAGE 6 We will also speak to the importance of affordable and reliable energy. The OFA recently conducted a survey of rural Ontario residents to help identify barriers to using natural gas. The results from this survey support the case for expansion of natural gas lines and cost-effective access for rural residents. The OFA also continues to lobby for provincial regulatory reform. While changes to the regulatory environment are often a low cost or no-cost solution for the Ontario government, cutting red tape and duplicating regulations save Ontario farmers time and money, allowing farmers to focus on what we do best: growing food. Finally, OFA will speak to the need for a provincial agriculture and food strategy. Such a strategy must be carefully thought out, and make considerations for food access, food knowledge, and maintain funding for important safety net programs such as the Risk Management Program that provide much needed stability to keep farmers farming. The OFA has enjoyed a positive working relationship with Premier Wynne to date. The 2013 budget is the perfect opportunity for her to deliver on her promises, and put some meaningful investment into Ontario’s largest sector. Mark Wales is the president of the OFA.

Watching insects in March I was never that great at cross country skiing, unless the trail was straight, had no curves and I didn`t have to stop. Then, I did okay. Many winters ago at a local park, I found myself on a hill, out of control and heading straight for cluster of skiers gathered at the bottom of the slope. Waving my ski poles madly in the air and shouting GET OUT OF THE WAY, GET OUT OF THE WAY!, they scattered just in time to see me whistle through them, only coming to a stop when I embraced a small white cedar. Mostly I snowshoe, and this winter I had a nice trail around the perimeter of two fields, and beyond, where I would explore at break of day. As the warmer days of March continue to melt much of the snow in the fields, my compacted trail refuses to surrender to the inevitable spring ahead of us. As I stooped over at one point to tighten the laces, it was then I noticed my track from a day earlier looking rather dark and sooty. As I bent closer to have a better look, the soot began to dance as though activated by some mysterious static electricity. Although the air temperature was near zero, the snow was still quite cold and was nowhere near

melting. Still, these were minute insects I was witnessing - snow fleas actually, more accurately known as springtails, and they were in no pain. They’re used to playing in the snow. A few days earlier, a Hillier resident emailed me upon her discovery of these critters too in her travels. Springtails, although resembling fleas as they jump about, are in no way related to fleas. They are so primitive they have no wings, and there is no evidence they ever did. In short, their evolution stopped long before wings came on the scene, and that was a very long time ago indeed. Springtails are aptly named, for that is precisely what they do, with their tail. It is an ingenious piece of equipment, forked and normally bent underneath the abdomen and fastened with a spring release under pressure. When released it hits the ground and propels the insect upwards, up to 100 times its body length. Very handy for escaping enemies. We always seem very intrigued when we see insects actively moving about in the winter. Woolly bears out on warm winter days never fail to shock us. So what are these snow fleas doing out? Warm winter days draw them out in large masses to feed on algae and fungal spores

Terry Sprague

Outdoor Rambles on old snowbanks. They are so tiny that 100,000 in a one square metre of surface is not an unusual number. When under the snow, they play an important role in recycling organic material. You can nearly always find a few if you look in the silvery fur of the winter rosettes of mullein. Interestingly, they have a tendency in winter to accumulate in low places; hence, the reason we see them in our foot tracks in the snow. If you want to get a closeup view of these little critters, simply take a look at them through the opposite end of your binoculars, which will transform your binoculars into a handy magnifying glass.

We tend to call them insects, but technically I suppose they are not, although they are sixlegged and certainly share a common ancestor. Their scientific name, Collembolla from ‘coll’, meaning glue and ‘embol’, meaning peg, refers to a rather fascinating feature about this creature. Don’t attempt to see this feature through the wrong end of your binoculars for you will likely fail in your attempt. They have a tube which projects down from the underside of the abdomen, and which exudes a glue-like substance for adhesion on slippery surfaces - certainly useful, I would suspect, if they are out and about on a windy day. That same organ also controls fluid balance in the body. But springtails aren’t the only minute creatures that are apparent these days. Check out the running creeks for stoneflies. If you are lucky, as I was last week, you may even see one flying at slow, lumbering speeds. Soon after hatching in early spring, the larvae bury themselves in the stream bed. The immature nymphs of these small, dark coloured slender insects live in water, and their name comes from their habit of clinging to the underside of submerged stones. When the weather is frigid, the

nymphs of winter stoneflies crawl from under their submerged stones where they have spent the summer, make their way up streambanks, and anchor themselves to rocks with gluelike secretions. Then, they crawl out of their skins, and take to the chilled air as four-winged adults. They are welcome insects to see since they are indicators of water quality since they thrive only in clear, unpolluted water. By having this rather unorthodox life style, and spending the summer lying dormant while other insects are out and about, they avoid problems like overheated streams, low oxygen concentrations, fluctuating flows, and heavy predation by fish. With small birds and large predatory insects fewer in number in the winter than in summer, springtails may even realize this too as they come out to dance in the snow. While I may have crushed several thousand springtails as I hiked home, there were probably more than a million left behind that were untouched. TURBINES | Divisive impact on island residents CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 65 Years Ago March 17, 1948 n Local hockey players gathered together to rally for one of their own. The Tamworth Beavers, winners of the Addington Hockey League championship, suited up to play an all-star team made up of other league players. The game was played in Napanee. The game — won by the all-stars 4-3 — was held to benefit Clarence Coulter, a player who had recently broken an ankle in a game against Newburgh. n A new group committed to realizing the construction of a new memorial community arena was seeking feedback from the public on how that project should proceed. The committee was headed up by Bruce McPherson. The committee was looking for supporters to help the ambitious project — which would not only offer a venue for local athletic but provide a fitting memorial to the community’s fallen soldiers — move forward. Even fundraising had begun in earnest. According to the committee, a total of $117 had been donated toward the arena construction project.

35 Years Ago March 15, 1978 n Local MP Doug Alkenbrack announced that he would not be seeking the local Progressive Conservative nomination. Alkenbrack, who had served in the House of Commons for 16 years, said it was a “family decision” to step away from federal politics. He didn’t leave without some choice words for the Liberal government led by Pierre Trudeau. “Parliament is not very effective today,” he said. “Trudeau’s socialistic Liberalism is the cause of the erosion of its effectiveness.” n The OPP were seeking the public’s help in helping to solve a murder. The body of a 16-year-old girl, Linda Bright, was found along County Rd. 11 near Selby. The girl, originally from London, had been strangled. Bright had been last seen at the Frontenac Mall in Kingston, where she was selling magazine subscriptions. Some of her belongings were also found west of Belleville. The OPP said that a $10,000 reward was being offered in connection with the case.

“I’m concerned with the amount of damage they’re going to do to the island during the construction period and that there’s not going to be anything left,” said Marc Raymond, who has lived on Amherst Island for 10 years. “They want to use about half the island roads that exist now, so in order to do so they need to be widened, strengthened and built up, so they will probably have to fill the ditches and cut the trees on one side in order to make the road big enough,” Raymond continued. He said Algonquin representatives deny having to cut trees but Raymond said he has measured the roads and believes the size of the equipment being brought in for the turbines will not fit. “They deny that they have to cut trees but we’ve done the surveys and there are places where their equipment won’t go by, especially when they have to go around a corner, they need 120-foot turning radius.” Raymond said much of the 11,000 truckloads of gravel and other supplies will also pass by the Amherst Island School, while other truckloads will be taken through the village on underdeveloped and small village roads that will need remodeling. Aside from physical changes, Raymond said the island has already undergone emotional struggles. “It’s already damaging the island. There are people that don’t talk to each other anymore because one is getting a turbine and the other doesn’t want a turbine,” he said. “They’re being ostracized and they’re upset with the people who don’t want the turbines because they can’t understand why they don’t want them to make some money.” Raymond said has been put in an awkward situation because his neighbour plans to host turbines, which disallows Raymond from building on his property. “You can’t build on your own building lot. As it turns out I own three building lots. I was going to build a house for each of my kids, I have three kids, now I can’t because the (building restriction) circle passes through my house so from my house up I’m not allowed to build a house. So my lot is now worth nothing.” Janet Grace, a real estate broker with clients on Amherst Island and Wolfe Island, attended the protest, carrying signs to stop the project. She said she has seen significant property value decreases,

MPP Randy Hillier (left) talks with protesters outside the wind turbine meeting in Bath last Wednesday. despite research by Algonquin that says otherwise. “We’ve seen it already and on Wolfe Island in the past year there has not been one property over $400,000 to sell. … Nothing is selling. Nothing. As soon as they have seen the turbines they’re out of there,” said Grace. One of her clients from Amherst Island is a widow in her mid-80s who is ready to retire but cannot sell her home. That means the woman cannot move into senior’s assisted living. “She has about 50 acres, beautiful house, gorgeous acreage, beautiful gardens, she’s had her house on the market for well over a year now,” said Grace. However, the proposed turbine project will show about six or seven turbines out each of her windows. “As soon as I show that house, and everyone loves the house, they love the property, but as soon as I tell them there’s a wind turbine project in the works, they run. They’re not willing to deal with the health problems associated; they know the property would be devalued as soon as they came. But she’s 86 and she can’t live there anymore,” said Grace. Amy Caughey, whose family has lived on Amherst Island for 150 years, said she feels Algonquin is being irresponsible by exposing children and adults to the suspected health risks associated with wind turbines. “I’m worried about chil-

dren being exposed to the impacts of industrial wind turbines that are too close and 550 metre setbacks, you have to read very little information to know that is just too close to humans,” she said “It’s a responsibility for adults to take care of children and in this case, that’s not happening in rural Ontario. That’s a very sad thing for me because my community is a very important part of my life.” Caughey said she is not against wind turbines but does not feel that Amherst Island is the proper place for industrial wind turbines, especially within 550 metres of homes and a school. “Bigger isn’t better in this case. I’m not against wind turbines but I am against them putting my family at risk. So it puts me in a place where I feel that I need to stand up for me and my family because I feel like no one else is,” said Caughey, through cracking emotion. “I feel like I’m a pretty green person. I use cloth diapers, I recycle, I reuse things, I drive a fuel-efficient car. This isn’t about that. This is about safety for adults and for children and I cannot expose my children to that kind of risk and no one should be expected to or forced to.” Norman said he and other Algonquin representatives welcomed any input from the residents holding signs outside the building, including those from MPP Randy Hillier, who attended the protest outside.

“All community comments are extremely important so we encourage anyone outside… to come in, ask questions, provide their comments so we can incorporate it and think about it and do a responsible job of building the project,” said Norman during the information meeting. Most of those outside wearing and holding signs did go inside the information meeting, still wearing signs on their shirts. Hillier told protesters he will continue to fight for the residents on Amherst Island. “I think I’ve been doing that. But some people are better listeners than others,” said Hillier. Norman said he had been in discussion with Hillier, who has openly opposed to Algonquin’s project. “I just had a very interesting debate with Randy (Hillier),” said Norman during the meeting. He said the conversation discussed the importance of renewable energy and how it can benefit communities and the government. Algonquin will be accepting written feedback and concerns until tomorrow and then they will begin a community consultation report. “We’ll be considering all those comments and feedback and make modification where it’s appropriate and required and then Ministry of the Environment will judge us.” Norman said if everything goes forward as planned, construction would begin in 2014.

Fragrant topic for Grassroots Growers BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

When the Tamworth/Erinsville Grassroots Growers hold their next meeting on Tuesday night, they plan to air a discussion on a rather pungent topic. The Grassroots Growers welcome ‘Garlic Guru’ Paul Pospisil, who will offer a presentation on how to best grow garlic. The presentation starts at 7 p.m. at the Tamworth Public Library branch. There’s no charge to attend, and all are welcome.

200 garlic cultivars, started the Bulbil Project in order to produce cleaner garlic planting stock and conducted numerous question-specific trials on garlic. The intent of the trials is to promote both diversification and organic growing of garlic.” Besides advice on growing garlic, Pospisil will also offer tips on storing it, curing it and cooking it. He’ll also be available for a question-andanswer session after the presentation. For more information, contact tegrassrootsgrowers@gmail.com or visit the group’s website at te-grassrootsgrowers.weebly.com.

Pospisil, who operates Beaver Pond Estates in Lanark County, brings years of gardening experience to the topic as a longtime garlic promoter and researcher. He’s also the editor and publisher of the Garlic News. Few, if any, know more about growing this popular bulb. According to the Grassroots Growers, Pospisil “conducts research on garlic and evaluates garlic cultivars by conducting growing trials to determine their suitability for Canadian climate. In the Small-Plot Garlic Variety Trials, he has developed organic growing techniques for garlic, evaluated over

FESTIVAL | Four ‘icons’ to be honoured “The multicultural committee honour(s) community icons (and) local individuals who have made significant contributions to culture and multiculturalism in the Napanee area. Previous recipients have been Mr.

Bruce McPherson and Ms. Avril Lavigne,” said Murphy. Christian announced the first of four icons on Tuesday: Kate Snyder. “Kate (Snyder) came to Napanee in 1959 or 1960 and she had a little bit of a boarding house here in town and took in a black person

who came to Napanee in 1965,” said Christian. After that, her guest was victim to racism in the community but she and her family continued to fight for him and discontinued services at businesses that did not do the same. Eventually, there was a public apology made and the man was welcomed. “Because of what she did and because of the welcome that she set out (she) has become a great citizen for people like myself to come to town and enjoy it… She is

104 years old and we’re going to recognize her for being an icon in the cultural sense,” said Christian. The following two days at the multicultural festival will be filled with the “sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the cultures from around the world,” as Murphy explained to council, and will be held at the SPC. In addition to that, a small parade will be held downtown on June 22. “There will also be some other new and exciting additions to our traditional festival format to make our 10year anniversary a truly memorable experience,” said Murphy.

New moms needed for diabetes study BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

The Tyendinga Mohawk Community Wellbeing Centre is working with Western University’s Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies program in an effort to find out more about diabetes and how it affects First Nations communities. Right now, both midwife Dorothy Green and registered nurse Gale Hayward of the Community Wellbeing Centre are attempting to attract pregnant, self-identified First Nations women to participate in the study. Besides being pregnant and being aboriginal, participants do not have to be from a Native reserve. Hayward says that there are two components to the study. First is the ‘clinical’ side, which requires the expectant mothers’ to have their blood sugar levels monitored through their pregnancy. The other component is to educate those expectant mothers about diabetes and how lifestyle choices can make a difference in both the lives of moms and the lives of babies as well. The Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies program is one component of the National Diabetes Management Strategy, a program aimed at evaluating diabetes care in Canada. While diabetes repre-

sents a health challenge for all Canadians, those from First Nations have been hit harder by the disease. Studies have shown First Nations peoples in Canada are three to five times likelier to suffer from Type 2 diabetes than their nonNative counterparts; further, pregnant Native women are four times more likely to suffer from gestational diabetes — a usually temporary diabetic condition that disappears after childbirth. Those women who have gestation diabetes, however, “are at a higher risk of developing Type II diabetes later on in life,” said Hayward. Hayward and Green are looking for aboriginal expectant mothers who are between 19 and 36 weeks pregnant. Women who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes or those unsure or not yet tested can be accepted into the study. The woman’s health care provider will continue to provide care and be in contact with the research team. Women who participate can choose between having a small continuous glucose monitor or use a regular glucose monitors. Those interested in participating can call Green and Hayward at 613-967-3603 ext. 166. More information can also be found at w w w. t n d m s. c a / H M H B Tyendinaga.html.

Beginning March 15 the South East CCAC will be posting long-term care waitlist list information for each of the 36 homes in Southeastern Ontario. The list will be updated on the 15th of each month. Knowledge to get your Home SOLD

Interior Stylist Merola Tahamtan will guide you through staging and designing your home. 613-561-0244 merolatahamtandesigns@live.ca Twitter: @MerolaDesigns

A few weeks ago, I shared with you, the top ten tips for those buying a home, this week I have the top ten tips for those trying to sell their home in this competitive market for top dollar. Commit to the Process The smart home seller makes a conscious decision and commitment to sell, plans carefully what to do when the sale occurs, chooses the timing carefully when possible, prices the home in accordance with recent comparable sales, keeps emotions in check and out of the way, listens to the advice of and lists the home with a professional real estate agent and allocates adequate time off from work to handle the above. In any market there are homes that go up for sale and just don’t sell. Believe it or not, the number of homes not selling (called expired listings in the trade) can be as high as 40- 60%. Why? The reason is simple- commitment on behalf of the seller. Too often homes are listed for sale to “test the market”, or to “see if we can get our price”. At other times, the homes are just not in the condition to be sold- at any price. Seller commitment, not a listing, but to a sale, is critical.

Hire a Real Estate Agent to Represent You Industry estimates vary but it is generally thought that over 90% of homes are sold with the assistance of a real estate agent. Unless you have significant home selling experience and current knowledge of applicable laws, h R Aregulations and market condi- w s tions it just makes good sense to hire a professional. They will help guide you through the entire home selling process, and get you the most value for your home. Clean Up – Fix Up- Inspect Some people believe to sell their home, they should just be able to put a sign in their front yard and get ready to move. People that buy homes want a clean well kept place in which to live. They don’t welcome taking on the task of correcting someone else’s problems and neglect. It also pays the prudent home seller to arrange for an inspection prior to listing the home for sale. A licensed home inspector will turn up many issues which merit correction in the areas of structural integrity, repair and maintenance or safety. Since the home buyer will be sure to have his own inspection done prior to finalizing the deal it just makes good sense to find out these things early and take care of them up front. Consider having your home professionally staged to let prospective buyers see your home in the best light. The result is a faster sale for more money. Price is RightThe First Time If the first rule of real estate is location, the second rule is price. One of the principle reasons homes do not sell in a reasonable period of time is because they are priced incorrectly- usually too high. Problem is, after a

home has been on the market for a while without selling buyers become wary. “But we can always come down on the price” say the sellers. Yes you can- and should. The problem is that homes that are priced too high to begin with usually don’t receive a price reduction soon enough and eventually sell for less than they would rhave had they been priced properly to begin with. Solution: Hire an honest, competent Real Estate Agent and follow their advice on pricing. Time is Right Granted, not everyone has the luxury of being able to plan their move around the “selling season” and there is no doubt that homes are sold all year long. Problem is, too often discretionary sellers wait to get motivated until the season has passed them by. Then they spend time and effort getting the home fixed up, price it at (or above) the level where homes were selling during the “active time of year”, put it on the market during the worst time of year and wait, wait, wait. If timing cannot be controlled, other things can. The astute seller will seek counsel with a trusted Real Estate Agent as to market conditions and timing and then act accordingly. Maintaining a healthy, safe home should be everyone’s goal. Just as the proper function of a home involves the interaction of numerous systems, there are many factors that should be addressed to ensure your home provides as healthy and safe an environment. Here are just a few of the many items to consider. •Check for fall hazards. Do a 3-minute sweep of your house, particularly the stairs and hallways – and especially if children or older friends or relatives spend time in your home. Regularly pick up clothes, shoes, bags, and any other clutter and clear it out of the way so it won’t cause falls. Make sure guardrails and handrails are present and securely attached. Accidents on stairs are a leading cause of a significant number of accidents in homes. Falls, particularly on stairs, are the leading cause of injury-related accidents for adults over 65. • Test your smoke

alarms. If they aren’t working and you are unable to replace the battery or otherwise get them working properly again, don’t delay. Don’t let one night go by without protection. Having working smoke alarms in your home cuts your risk of dying in a fire in half. •Program your phone for poison control. It is estimated that everyday more than 300 children under age 20 are treated in emergency departments for poisonings from product found in the home. In the event of suspected poisoning emergency medical assistance should be called for immediately. However, contacting a poison control center may help provide helpful information related to the particular incident (or

piece of mind) while waiting for help to arrive. In Canada, there are Provincial Poison Control Centers that can be contacted for help and information, keep their number handy. •Order a radon testing kit for your home. January was National Safety Radon Month but it is certainly never too late to test your home for radon. Even if you tested your home several years ago or a recent test of a neighbor’s home did not indicate a concern, it does not mean that present conditions in your own home are the same. Home renovations, energy retrofits, and weatherization projects can all contribute to changes in radon levels. The only way to find out if radon levels are elevated beyond the recommended action point is to test for it. Testing kits are available from most of the major hardware outlets. •Make your home as smoke free as possible. We are all aware of the health hazards related to cigarette smoke. But poorly vented fireplaces, excessive candle burning, the overuse of aerosols and products advertised to "clean" the air all add potentially harmful particulates. If you are not concerned about your own health, realize that parents control 90% of their children’s exposure to secondhand smoke and other airborne hazards, do your part to keep it clean. •Working Carbon Monoxide detectors save lives! Carbon Monoxide, commonly referred to as the ‘silent killer’ is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and can kill. Be sure you have a working Carbon Monoxide detector in your home.

Russians to hold open practice at SPC National team visits Mar. 24-29 Staff Reporter

Fans will have a chance to scout the Russian National Women’s hockey team on March 26, when they open their Strathcona Paper Centre practice to the public. From 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. the ‘Big Red Machine’ will run through high tempo drills in preparation of next month’s World Championships. Many of the players have Olympic

experience and are expected to suit up for Russia in the 2014 games, held in Sochi, Russia. The team was put together by former Ottawa Senator and New York Islander Alexei Yashin, who serves as the team’s general manager. The open practice is free to everyone and offers young players and fans alike a unique opportunity to witness such an Olympic calibre team on the SPC’s ice.

All square a one win apiece is where the bantam ‘B’ Napanee Crunch and Ennismore sit after two games of the Lower Lakes Eastern Finals. Ennismore struck first, securing a 3-1 win in Saturday’s Game 1 at home. Katlyn Babcock scored the lone goal for Napanee. The Crunch roared back with a solid effort at home on Sunday, shutting out their opponents 2-0. Liz McAuley potted the first goal, assisted by Megan McKee. Kiana Lovelace seal the win with a goal in the third, assisted by McKee. Game 3 of the first-tofour-points series is scheduled for Sunday in Ennismore. The Crunch will look to figure out a way generate more offense on the road this time around. Both the Eagles and Crunch battled for the top spot in the division all year, with Ennismore edging Napanee in the final game of the regular season. Napanee finished 24-7-11. Ravens out-Smart the CIS field Smart wins record ninth CIS title Beaver Sports

arlton Ravens men’s basketball coach Dave Smart added two more accolades to an already impressive resume, guiding his team to the CIS Men’s Final 8 title just days after earning the Stuart W. Aberdeen Memorial Trophy. Smart, who hails from Napanee, has now won the Aberdeen Memorial, which is given to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport top coach, six times. He was awarded it in 2003, ‘05, ‘09 and ‘11-‘13. That’s two more than any other coaches in CIS history. The Ravens opened the season with a loss before rattling off 19 straight wins to capture their 13th consecutive first-place finish in the East Division. In Sunday’s finals they defeated Lakehead University 92-42 to clinch the championship. With the win the Ravens now own sole possession of the most

It won’t be long now before Napanee’s ball diamonds are once again bustling with activity. To prepare for the season, Softball Napanee is hosting coaching and umpire clinics next month. When the season gets underway, the town will host three major tournaments this summer.

Softball Napanee preps for busy season Express to host midget, novice and squirt tournaments this summer BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

s ball players and fans alike long for the umpire's familiar call of ‘play ball!’, Softball Napanee is already hard at work preparing for the upcoming season. The Napanee Express plan to field a full slate of teams this year, running from junior mite boys up to junior men. Last year, for the first time in recent memory, the Express didn’t field a junior men’s team due to a lack of available players. A new rule implemented at the start of last year saw the junior age drop from U23 to U21, greatly reducing the number of available players. Many of last year’s midget aged players are ready to make the jump and look to defend the silver and bronze medals the Napanee U23 teams won in 2011 as the host team. The current group are coming off a successful year themselves, capturing bronze last August at Nationals, which were held in Fredericton, N.B. They entered the tournament as the top seed out of Ontario, winning eliminations on their home turf. This year the junior championships will be held in Owen Sound, Ont. while the midgets will take place in St-Leonard-d’Aston, QC. Napanee will look to send teams to both events. On the women’s side, the U21 championship is slated for Leduc, AB and the U18 Women’s will be held in Charlottetown, PEI.

A

They are also expected to return Taylor Brown and Cole Bolton, who suited up for Team Canada at the ISF IX Junior Men’s World Championships, held in Argentina last November. On the ladies’ side they’ll start at junior mite and go up to midget. Much like the men’s side, the Napanee Express ladies’ teams have built a solid winning tradition over the years. To help get into game shape before hitting the diamond, Express coaches will be hosting indoor clinics at no charge. For information on how to register, call Karen Mills at 613354-0828. They’ll cover all the basics as players look to shake off the rust of the long off-season.

Anyone interested in becoming an Express coach this year can attend the What to Coach Clinic, April 6-7 and the How to Coach Clinic April 27-28. The weekend long training sessions will prepare applicants with everything they need to know for coaching the sport of softball at any level. For those looking to call the balls, strikes, safes and outs, there will be an umpire clinic for people aged 12-18, also on April 27. Contact Mills for information on all clinics. When the boys and girls of summer do return, the Express can look forward to hosting three major tournaments. On the weekend of June 28-30 they’ll host

the OASA Midget Boys’ Eliminations. On July 1921 it'll be the PWSA Novice Girls’ Qualifier and Aug. 10-11 they’ll hold the OASA Squirt Boys’ Provincials. Napanee has long been known across Ontario as a softball hot bed, always turning out fundamentally sound players. When tournaments do roll through town, the stands are usually packed all weekend long. As always a full slate of games will be held from May to August at the Napanee fairground diamonds throughout the week. Many of the Express teams use league play to sharpen their skills before heading off the major tournaments.

Napanee Minor Hockey Report

Kirkpatrick’s hat trick powers minor peewees Beaver Sports

he Napanee McDougall Insurance Minor Peewees have advanced to the Ontario A Finals. Friday, in a solid performance, the locals won 31. Ryan Kirkpatrick had a pair of goals while Liam Wilkinson added an insurance marker. Needing just one point on Saturday, they led most of the way to win 5-2. Kirkpatrick guided the offense with a hat trick. Emmet Pierce and Logan White tallied as well in the win. Kirkpatrick, White, Pierce, Wilkinson, and Adam Burger all contributed assists as well. The locals will face the Minor Oaks, a team from Oakville, in the OMHA Finals to begin this Saturday at 6 p.m. at the SPC n The Napanee Country Traditions Novice As began their Eastern Finals with Quinte West on a winning note Saturday by a 4-1 score. Their opponents scored first when a winger left open in front tipped a pass coming out of the corner. Zach Slaven sent Cole Campbell in early in the middle frame, and he tried to stuff one in the short side, but Quinton Pierce netted the rebound. Still in the sec-

ond, with a 4-on-3 man advantage, Campbell scored on the wrap around, set up by Ethan Sutcliffe. It stayed close until the Stars scored twice in a ninesecond span to ice it. Campbell scored from Jakob DaCosta, and then Reid Lambert made a fine deke, after a setup by Ethan Martin. Corbin Votary was rocksolid in net. Sunday in Trenton, the Country Traditions Novice ‘A’ Stars lost 3-2 in overtime. Scoring goals for the Stars were Cal Uens and Cole Campbell. Assists in this game went to Reid Lambert, Ethan Martin and Lukas Hannah. Both Ryan Aldridge and Corbin Votary shared the goaltending duties. Game 3 will be played at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the SPC and Game 4 will be played Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Trenton. n The Atom Minors faced Whitby Blue in Game 4 of their best-of-five series, bowing out in a tough Game 6 on Monday. The series opened in Whitby with a match that saw the Stars lose 6-5 in overtime. Napanee’s Ben White got a power play goal in the first. Connor Brooks got a pair of unassisted markers, but Napanee trailed 5-3 in the third, before Caden

Holmes potted a pair. Dylan Bailey and Isaac Uens recorded assists. In Napanee, Sunday, John Hearns gave Napanee an early lead before Whitby got a pair. Ben White scored a power play goal on a point shot with eight seconds left in the second frame to knot the score at 2-2. Emerson Kennelly made several important saves in the contest. The third and fourth periods settled nothing, setting up Game 6 in Whitby. Monday night, the Stars were back on the road, but were eliminated in a 4-3 loss. n The Napanee Novice AE squad was in Uxbridge on Saturday, and returned with a 4-2 win. On Sunday at home to Oshawa White, they shut out their opponents 3-0. Spencer Cranley had a pair of goals, and Taylor Gilmour scored once. Ben Buxton, Dawson Wales, Connor McGinnis, Gavin Brooks, and Gilmour all had assists. n The Napanee Peewee AE Stars wanted to generate some momentum as they got ready for a year-end tournament, and they did just that with a win over the visiting Belleville Bulls in an exhibition game last Friday night. CARDS OF THANKS

The family of the late Jack Cronk would like to thank all of the people who helped us make it through his passing: the firemen who came to the house that morning and for everything you did; Ken Travers and Kevin Donaldson for your support and for the “Firemen’s Funeral” for Jack, he would have been proud; Bob Vannest for his eulogy. Thank you to Firemen and women from all Fire Stations who extended their love and respect to Jack. I am proud to be a Fireman’s wife, they are family; for Lindsey Hannah for your support and professionalism. Thank you Dr. McFadzean and the Tamworth Medical Centre for all your care to Jack and to me at this time; Father John for his kind and loving words and support; to the Lay Readers from St. Albans Christ Church and St. Luke’s and our church families; to the musicians, the music was beautiful and were favourites of Jack’s; for donations, flowers, cards and food that came to the house; to the girls Amy works with for the food; to Amy’s friends who put the lunch on between wakes; to Karen and the wonderful women who did the lunch after the funeral; to family and friends for all their support and love. If I forgot someone, please forgive me. The love and support has been greatly appreciated. Thank you for everything. God Bless each and everyone of you. Love, Dorothy, Clinton and Shelley, Amy and Shane, Zack and AJ. The Perrin family would like to thank everyone for their kind words and condolences after the passing of Iris Perrin. They were greatly appreciated by the family.

ARIES (Mar 21/Apr 20) Sorting through feelings may not come easy to you, Aries. At some point it becomes necessary to voice your opinions and you may need to show a vulnerable side. TAURUS (Apr 21/May 21) Taurus, a few complications could arise this week and how you react to them will be telling of how the rest of the month may proceed. Think about this before you act. GEMINI (May 22/Jun 21) Gemini, this week is likely to be a wash because there is something that came up that has the potential to dominate all of your time for the next several days. CANCER (Jun 22/Jul 22) Cancer, though you may be anxious to help a friend out, you need to seriously consider whether you have the time to spare at this point in time. Putting yourself first is priority. LEO (Jul 23/Aug 23) Leo, someone is going to open up to you emotionally and you may get caught off guard by the level of intimacy. This could turn out to be the start of a longlasting friendship. VIRGO (Aug 24/Sept 22) Virgo, let a particular situation cool down instead of adding extra fuel to the fire. Step away from a heated discussion if you feel like things may get

out of control. LIBRA (Sept 23/Oct 23) Libra, your heart may beat a little faster this week because of the excitement involved in meeting someone that has been on your mind. Be patient. SCORPIO (Oct 24/Nov 22) Scorpio, continue to discuss a financial situation with your significant other. Even if the discussion grows tiresome, talking it out is the best way to resolve the issue. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23/Dec 21) Sagittarius, you have an uncanny way of turning something that would normally be disastrous into enjoyable chaos. Think about a side career in party planning. CAPRICORN (Dec 22/Jan 20) Capricorn, big changes are in store for your family and there are nerves to accompany these changes. Set aside a day this week where you can have peace, quiet and time to reflect. AQUARIUS (Jan 21/Feb 18) Aquarius, your words are being heard but their meaning is simply not sinking in. Try rephrasing or approach the situation from another direction. PISCES (Feb 19/Mar 20) Pisces, your social schedule is jam-packed and you wouldn’t have it any other way. There may be a pocket of time for more fun.

Scott Finlay returns to slopes with ’mates 35 years after ski crash, being on the hill is still a thrill BY ASHLEY FOLEY Staff Reporter

Ashley Foley-Staff

Scott Finlay (middle, front) sits in his sit-ski sleigh with Track 3 instructor Austin Watts standing behind him after their final run at Batawa Ski Hill last Friday. Scott’s father, Hugh, (fourth from the left) , expressed his son’s excitement through the words Scott couldn’t say himself. Scott’s old teammates and friends stand around him after skiing a few runs, some for the first time in 35 years. and skied again with Scott in Batawa. Wilson has had a large hand in planning these fundraisers and ensuring the Napanee Acquired Brain Injury and Rehabilitation Home is a success. “(Scott) was easily in the top 100 in the world and well known. His ski

have had two purposes: to boost Scott’s esteem as well as raise awareness and funds for the yet-to-open Napanee Acquired Brain Injury and Rehabilitation Home.

Thirty-five years after a devastating downhill ski accident at the championships in Lake Louise that left him paralyzed, Scott Finlay was on the hill again, wide-eyed and smiling. Though this was not his first time back on the slopes since his accident, his excitement was apparent. He sat in his ski chair with Track 3 instructor Austin Watts and his daughter Laura assisting as they headed down Batawa Ski Hill last Friday. Though it has been years since he was the 21year-old championship skier competed for a spot in the Crazy Canucks team, led by Steve Podborski and Ken Read, Finlay fell back into routine on Batawa Ski Hill, leaning into the turns and smiling for a faster, more challenging run. And that’s just what he got. The final run Watts took him on was a steep ‘black diamond’ run. They made wide turns as Finlay’s old teammates followed. Though some might say Finlay has been stuck in time, not able to move on his own or muster a word, his old teammates say he is the “glue” that held their closeknit group together, then and now. Jeff Armstrong was one of Finlay’s teammates in 1978, the year Finlay had the accident that nearly killed him. He says Finlay is the one who kept all of the teammates together all these years. “We got together as a team last January for the first time in 34 years out in Montana and it was really Scott that brought us back together because we were all in touch over this Napanee Acquired Brain Injury facility,” said Armstrong. “It really showed me that the bond that exists from the people on this team is very different because I’ve been involved with people throughout my life as we all have but there is something very special about this group of people. To a large extent, it’s Scott’s accident that is the glue that really holds us together.” After the crash, Armstrong said most of Finlay’s friends did not see him for years but have recently been focusing on fundraising for the Napanee Acquired Brain Injury and Rehabilitation Home, bringing them closer together and closer to Finlay again. “We’re all just kind of waking up to the fact that these sorts of things are not only possible but fantastic to do. I see this as a beginning of a whole new chapter in Scott’s life. It’s what he needs; he needs his friends. So it’s great that we can do this,” said Armstrong. Finlay’s father, Hugh, referred to Scott’s teammates as “a team of brothers

and sisters.” Armstrong agreed, stating their bond is exceptional. “It’s like a family and I think most sports teams are the same but I think the intensity of ski racing and the danger of ski racing, kind of welds people together in a way that a lot of other sports maybe don’t. … We really were like a big family, travelling around, looking out for one another,” said Armstrong. He travelled and roomed with Scott as they travelled through Europe, Canada and the U.S. in their late teens and early 20s before Scott’s accident at the age of 21. “It was a lot of fun, it was a lot of hard work, and we had a great time. Scott has a great sense of humour … we were always up to no good and having a lot of fun. We enjoyed it to the max,” he said. Megan Johnson, who also skied with Scott before his accident, attended Batawa Ski Hill to ski alongside her friend and past teammate. “Scotty and I were the two outsiders. I came from 100 miles north, from a small little town, called Petawawa, and Scotty came from his little hill in Napanee, so they used to call us

be the next couple of months,” said Hugh. “I can’t talk too much on that but there’s a hope. These programs are really good, a real positive attitude so I hope everything will work out great.” He has been working to get the facility up and running for 13 years and if he receives government approval, it will be the last hoop they will have to jump through before shovels can hit the ground. “We’re just waiting for final approval from the

government. We’re inching forward each day but it’s a long process. Hopefully within the next few months we will have an announcement,” said Geoff Webster, one of the committee members working with Hugh to get the facility up and running. Once approval is given, Webster said it could be as few as six months until the program would be running. Initially, there would be room for six individuals, with hopes to expand to house 12 in the future.

A new poetry contest allows seniors to raise funds for the Amherstview Branch Library simply by writing poems. The contest is organized by Amherstview Branch Library supervisor Patricia Richard (left) and ReveraBriargate Seniors Community’s lifestyle consultant Sandy Keeler.

Local poetry contest does double duty Also a fundraiser for Amherstview library BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Seniors are being called upon to channel their inner Robert Frost for a poetry contest, which doubles as a fundraiser for the Amherstview Branch Library. Seniors can enter their original works for a chance at some great prizes in the categories of humour, life experience and ‘spring is in the air’. “This is to encourage seniors in the surrounding area to come out for a good time and they’re going to help support a fundraising effort,” said Sandy Keeler, a lifestyle consultant with Revera-Briargate Seniors Community, who is sponsoring the contest. “For every senior that enters the contest, Revera-Briargate will make a donation to the library.” How much money they donate will depend on how many entries they get. “It’ll either go towards books of interest to seniors or it will be used to develop a program for seniors at the library,” branch supervisor Patricia Richard said of their plans for the money. Richard says she’s hoping the contest will also let seniors know about some of the resources available to them at their local library. For those who haven’t visited in a while, it may rekindle their love of reading and writing. Seniors from anywhere can enter by visiting the Amherstview Branch Library until April 24. They don’t have to be local residents but must be present at Revera-

Briargate, located on 4567 Bath Rd. in Amherstview, on April 30 for the judging. Richard at Loyalist Township Recreation Department’s Teressa Cormier will judge the entries and select winners for each category. With April being celebrated across Canada as Poetry Month, Keeler said it was the perfect inspiration to launch the contest. It also gives seniors, an age bracket often ignored for such competitions, something to call their own. Some may have written in the past but had no opportunity to share their works in a public forum. Others may have always wanted to give it a try and this contest may motivate them to try their hand. “We want to celebrate that they have life experience and they can find humour in situations,” added Keeler. “This is a generation that lived through depressions and world wars.” With such rich experiences and wisdom to draw upon, there should be no shortage of creative and interesting submissions. There will also be a social aspect to the competition, as seniors will have a chance to mingle at the awards presentation on April 30. Light refreshments will be provided and the winning poems will be read as well. For more information on how to enter contact Richard at 613-389-6006. The entries must be dropped off to the library located at 322 Amherst Dr. in the same building at the W.J. Henderson Arena.
