Hosni family: life in Napanee is ‘Heaven’ BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
Memoir Monday
Freedom: a word so many in Canada takes for granted – but not the Hosni family, a Syrian refugee family that now calls Napanee home. “Before the war we had a normal life, but without any human rights of course. During the war, life continued on but it was difficult to live. Finally, it got to the point that it was not possible to live there,” Majed Hosni said through a translator. Majed is the father of the six-person Syrian family now living in Napanee. “It’s like a dream come true. We’ve died and gone to heaven,” Majed said, adding that the community has been more than welcoming to him and his family. “They all celebrated that we were here, I was really overwhelmed. I had tears of joy and couldn’t express how appreciative we are. I’m afraid that one day I will wake up and this will all be a dream. I’m afraid of that nightmare,” he said And Majed has a lot to be afraid of if that nightmare ever came true. Shortly after his fourth child was born, Majed was arrested and taken from his family for 16 months. No communi-
cation with his family, no showering, little to no food — all over one word: ‘freedom’. “Someone wrote the word ‘freedom’ on the outside wall on Majed’s shop in Damascus. So he was blamed for it even though he doesn’t know who wrote it,” said Razan, Majed’s wife. “That’s when they arrested him and cleaned out his shop of jewelry, gold and cash. Everything he worked for in his life was in that shop and it was all taken. “He spent 16 months behind bars and I had to look after the four kids,” Razan continued. “With their father absent, I taught the kids that I could be their father and their mother as a single parent. Our youngest girl was still crawling at the time. When we’d hear a bomb exploding near our house, we would shake and cover ourselves.” Majed was taken to Adra Prison, a well-known prison outside of Damascus, in Syria. The prison holds inmates from traffic offenders to murderers and drug dealers and is known to hold two to three times its capacity of prisoners at a time. Majed’s wife and four children had no idea of Majed’s whereabouts the entire time he was missing.
“I was hardly fed, I got nothing to eat. It was a concentration camp,” said Majed, who described himself as skin and bones upon his release. His tall, strong, full build had disintegrated to merely 140 lbs. Majed explained how often people would go missing in Damascus and would never return, so his disappearance was extremely hard on his family. “Someone would leave home to go get something and we can’t be sure if they would come back or not. If someone is going somewhere, the other person who is waiting for him or her would tell them to text them when they get there to know they’re alive. But the chance is 80 per cent that he won’t make it to where he’s going,” Majed said. After 15 months wondering where her husband was, Majed was able to contact Razan from prison. Within weeks he was released but did not walk out of Adra the same man he walked in. “After the 16 months, the first time I saw him I did not recognize him,” Razan admitted, shocked by his shrunken and weak body. “After he was released, the war had gotten more vicious there and that’s

Parents Majed and Razan (back) stand with their four children, from left: Mohammed, 10; Royaa, seven; Aseel, five; and Mahmoud, 12. when he was shot. After that we decided to leave.” Razan said they had to leave “for the sake of our kids. To save them and start over.” So Razan, Majed, and their four children: Mahmoud, who is now 12, Mohammed, now 10, Royaa, now seven, and Aseel, now five, packed up a few of their belongings to seek refuge in Jordan. The Hosni family was in Jordan for two years before being selected to come to Canada as refugees. The family spent some time in refugee camps but the living arrangements were so horrid that Majed sought out a rental home outside of the camp for he and his family
to live and enrolled his kids in a local school. “It was a difficult life in the refugee camps… It was hard to live in a crowded camp,” said Mejed. After completing the interview process, the Hosnis were told they would be coming to Canada in early 2016. Razan said she was “crying with joy” when they got the news. Majed said having the opportunity to bring his kids to Canada for higher education is worth everything that it took to get them here. “Their first dream was to come to Canada to go to school here. Even if all they can gain from coming to Canada to get educated

here, it would be enough for them,” said Majed. The Hosnis family has been in Canada for exactly five weeks today. Their four children are all enrolled at Southview Public School, while Majed and Razan attend English classes four days a week in Kingston. “Canada will become our new country. We will live here and raise our family,” said Razan. He looked through his living room window with tears in his eyes, watching his four children play road hockey freely outside their new home in Napanee and said “From a person who’s life was basically destroyed, to a new born life. I kind of forgot I am 43 years old; I must start from zero again,” he said, saying he is grateful for a fresh, new start in Canada. “I am not going to think about what I used to do or what I was in the past, I am going to plan for the future. What else can I accomplish here? Any chances of any job, once I am capable of speaking the language, I will take it. Learning English comes first,” Majed said.

KENNEDY | Community leader, volunteer CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Kennedy was elected County Warden on Dec. 9, 2015. He served on Stone Mills council since 2010, first as a councillor and then elected as reeve in 2014. His involvement in municipal politics began in 2003 when he became a member of the Stone Mills Committee of Adjustment. Kennedy’s leadership and volunteerism began long before his entrance into municipal politics. He worked as an educator and principal for 33 years for the Lennox and Addington County Board of Education, which later became the Limestone District School Board. He served as a board director and chair for L&A Mutual Insurance Company for about 15 years, was a member of the Tamworth Lions Club and served as a member of the Stone Mills Police Services Board. His involvement on county council led Kennedy to serve on the Economic Development Coalition, Prince Edward-Lennox and Addington Social Services Committee, the Joint Accessibility Advisory Committee and the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus. At home, Kennedy and his wife Rose Marie managed a cow calf operation with their son, Ted, on their family farm in Enterprise. “The man is so well respected, so well known. His reach is everywhere; insurance, agriculture, community service, Lions Club, sports,” said Todd Steele, who served on Stone Mills council with Kennedy for four years before running against Kennedy in 2014 for the position of reeve. Clarence Kennedy became L&A County Warden last December. works at L&A Mutual Insurance and was in constant communication with Kennedy as a board member for the company. However, like many others in the County, Steele’s first time meeting Kennedy was as a child. “I first knew him as Mr. Kennedy. When I was a student at Tamworth school he was the principal at Centreville Public School … I’ve known Clarence for more than 30 years. I’ve always looked up to him and respected him,” said Steele. “As someone who sat beside him and worked with him I would say his fairness
was a top quality. … Some of us (on council) would get hot and tempers would flare but Clarence was always the same. He was fair, non-judgmental,” he added. “Clarence set the standard for leadership. That’s very accurate. The world would be a much better place if it had people with Clarence Kennedy’s qualities,” Steele said. Brooks said Kennedy’s fairness and professionalism are qualities that shone through as Kennedy led the township and the county. “He focused very heavily on ensuring that all walks of life were served. He want-

ed to make sure that there was education and an active living for the youth. He wanted to make sure that services were to an acceptable standard to the ratepayers and he also wanted to make sure that our senior demographic was served in a manner to which they expected to be served,” said Brooks. Brooks said Kennedy often “led by example,” and as a result was “respectful and respected all his colleagues,” which motivated those around him to strive to work together to make their community, Township and County a better place. “To serve as part of Reeve Kennedy’s administration was both a privilege and an honour. His infectious and charismatic personality will be greatly missed in Stone Mills Township,” said Brooks. Left to mourn Kennedy’s passing is his wife Rose Marie, his children Amy Kennedy-York and her husband Jamie, his son Ted Kennedy and his wife Sara, and daughter Lana King and her husband Kevin, as well as his six grandchildren. A funeral is being held this morning at the Church of the Assumption in Erinsville, followed by a service at the Assumption Parish Cemetery.

apanee OPP has confirmed that a middle-aged female was killed Friday morning after being struck by a train in Napanee. The incident occurred Friday morning at approximately 10:52 a.m. when a middle-aged woman was struck while on the tracks near the Palace Road overpass just west of County Road 2. OPP say no foul play is suspected. n A 26-year-old Brampton driver has been charged with dangerous driving after the OPP received several reports last week with concern to the driver. A white, 2016 Hyundai Elantra was travelling westbound on the 401 on March 11, at approximately 8:15 a.m. at a high rate of speed. A member of the OPP Highway Safety Division observed the vehicle after the OPP Communications Centre in Smiths Falls received several calls regarding the driver. The 26-year-old was stopped and charged with

dangerous driving, contrary to the Criminal Code, and racing, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The vehicle was towed. The OPP thanks those members of the public who assisted the OPP in keeping the highways safe by reporting the incident. n A 25-year-old Napanee male was arrested after refusing to provide a breath sample when Napanee OPP stopped the man believing he was impaired. The incident occurred on March 10 at 5:20 p.m. A Napanee OPP officer stopped a vehicle on Palace Road in Napanee after witnessing the driver cross an intersection unsafely. The officer subsequently gave the driver a demand for a sample of his breath to which the driver refused. The driver was arrested and faces charges of refusing to provide a sample of his breath contrary to the Criminal Code, careless driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act and driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available contrary to the Liquor License Act.

Local cancer survivor conquers 5K race and physically active Tibbits was expecting. “Everyone I know is getting married and having a kid and I’m sitting here in a cancer ward, this is ‘wonderful,’” she recalls. “It’s kind of a humbling experience. The things you thought were important, the superficial stuff, isn’t necessarily important. It was more so ‘am I going to wake up the next morning?’” Rather than feel sorry for herself Tibbits quickly decided she wasn’t going to let it defeat her. Crediting her family, friends and support from Cigna vocational rehabilitation counsellor Victoria Baker, Tibbits was able to beat cancer. On Feb. 19 she was given a clean bill of health. Shortly after that her thoughts turned towards her grandmother and completing a race in her honour. “My grandma chose not to do chemotherapy because she didn’t want to be sick,” said Tibbits. “I fought for her. It was a big inspiration for me to one beat it, and two do it because she couldn’t.” Participating as a member of Team Cigna and Achilles International, Tibbits completed the walk in the hopes of inspiring other young people out there facing similar health struggles
Skyler Tibbits an inspiration for all fighters BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
lmost one year to the day of being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Skyler Tibbits was finishing the Achilles St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run/Walk, held Saturday in Toronto. Completing the race was important to the 24-year-old Napanee native on many fronts, both for herself and for anyone else battling cancer. She dedicated the walk to her grandmother, who passed away from cancer in January of 2015. Just one month later Tibbits, who doctors originally told had pneumonia, would be hit with the devastating news that she herself had cancer at the age of 23. “It was a whirlwind,” recalls Tibbits. “(Her grandmother) passed away Jan. 22. That was when I got the call for the cat scan. Then I went through all the testing and was diagnosed (with cancer) on March 11.” It was the last thing the young, otherwise healthy
A
to keep fighting. She completed the walk with her friend and colleague Beverly Franklin. “There’s a lot of support groups on Facebook and there’s a lot of people my age,” said Tibbits. “I figured I could show them there’s life after cancer and you can get back to where you were. You’re not always going to be the same person because it changes you but you can get back to who you were and accomplish whatever goals you want to accomplish regardless what cancer has done.” By her own admission she never expected one year ago she’d be taking part in a 5K race. “You never know how strong you are until you have no other choice,” she said. “I kept that playing in the back of my head the entire time. I didn’t have a choice, I wasn’t going to let it beat me and I wasn’t going to end my life at 23.” Her first race completed she now has her sights set on several more in the future including a Tough Mudder challenge. She’ll also be taking part in this years Napanee’s Relay For Life in June. Though she’s taken part in it many times before, she says she’s looking forward to taking part in the survivor’s lap.

One of the good ones I didn’t know Clarence Kennedy well; however, one interaction I had with him — one that was memorable for me — seems to fit well with what others have said about him since his passing this past Sunday. It was in the fall of 2014, during the municipal election. First off, I can tell you from experience that politicians can be a very sensitive lot during elections, for obvious reason: they’re in the middle of a public job interview. Any flubbing (or perceived flubbing) of their ‘resume’ isn’t much appreciated. In Kennedy’s case, I couldn’t even get his name right. It’s not a new mistake, either. Whenever I write his name, I have near irresistible urge to replace ‘Kennedy’ with ‘Milligan’. Why I didn’t want to use Clarence Kennedy’s proper name and substitute it with the name of a Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament who represented this area in the 1950s and 1960s, your guess is as good as mine. However, that’s exactly what I did, in a frontpage story, a review of the local municipal election races. I was notified of the error before the newspaper was printed, but too late to do anything about it. Expecting to be on the receiving end of a verbal blast from a (rightly) outraged politician, I decided to get out in front of it and contact Kennedy directly, before he read it in the next day’s edition. After a few somewhat frantic hours, I managed to get a hold of him. I explained what happened, and expected a barrage in return. “Milligan, eh? Good Conservative name,” he said with a chuckle. He then told me he understood — as much as anyone could possibly understand such an inexplicable error — and actually tried to make me feel better for having screwed up in the first place. I can tell you things like that don’t happen very often. (That said, he never failed to introduce himself as ‘Clarence Milligan’ any time we saw each other after that.) The fact that he didn’t take my error too seriously is in sharp contrast to the fact that he took his own job as a municipal politician extremely seriously. Any meeting that I was at, Kennedy was impeccably prepared. He had done his homework, and knew the issues inside and out. And for a rookie reeve/warden, Kennedy knew how to run a council meeting as well as anyone. Stone Mills Township and Lennox and Addington County lost a good one with Clarence Kennedy. He will be sorely missed.

Some advice for the finance minister I commend Finance Minister Bill Morneau for seeking informed advice for constructing your first budget. When you say that you are always interested in fresh ideas, I am with him all the way. I wish to give the following advice: do not use privatization and do not borrow from the private banks as ways to deal with the financial needs of our country. At the provincial level, the following are examples of the wrong-headedness of ‘taking into private ownership a public good or service’: Highway 407: Ontario gave away an important source of income for the next three generations. Brampton Hospital: By involving the private sector as “partners”, the hospital cost us 70 per cent more than the publicly-built Peterborough hospital, while providing only 25 per cent more beds. (These are audited figures.) Nova Scotia Power: Not only has privatization led to substantial increases in costs to businesses and residents, the company has resisted paying property taxes, contributed to environmental destruction and engaged in numerous deals of value only to stockholders. Terranet: A decade ago, the Province of Ontario gave over responsibility for property land titles to Terranet, resulting in citizens having to pay outrageous fees for services that should be more easily available. I have
recently had to pay $3,300 to prove I owned property on which I had been paying taxes since 1966. Hydro One: Privatizing our hydro in Ontario will prove to be equally disastrous. At the federal level, we made an even more disastrous decision when we privatized our money supply. Since 1974, our government has wasted over a trillion dollars by paying interest to domestic and foreign banks, when we could have borrowed from our own Bank of Canada interest-free. Because we no longer use the Bank of Canada to provide funds for the needed goods and services of our country, a previously manageable $20 billion dollar debt has grown to become $620 billion, largely due to compounded interest owed to the private banks. Interest charges at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels amount to more than $65 billion annually, unnecessary if the government were to borrow interest-free from the public bank we all own. We have been told that using the Bank of Canada is inflationary, but that is simply wrong. In fact, money creation will not provoke price inflation if the productive capacity of the economy is utilized and the people are fully employed. I urge the Finance Minister to review A Case Study of the Canadian Economy, 1935-75 by Josh Ryan-Collins of the Levy Economics Institute published in October 2015.
On behalf of the present and future generations of Canadians, I beg the Finance Minister not to extend these economic travesties that serve only to benefit the private corporations and banks, their CEOs, and their investors. As a fiduciary, he holds in trust all the shares of our Bank of Canada, and it is his duty to act on behalf of all Canadians, not just the bankers. Should additional understanding of these points be required, I refer you to Ellen Brown (President of the Public Banking Institute), Michael Hudson, Judy Kennedy, Paul Hellyer, and Ann Emmett (President of Committee on Monetary and Economic Reform, one of the lead plaintiffs suing the government for failing to use the Bank of Canada as stipulated in our constitution). These individuals are old enough to remember the immense benefits to our country of using the Bank of Canada from 1940 to 1970. We were able to pay for gigantic infrastructure projects, such as the St Lawrence Seaway, the TransCanada Highway, the Toronto subway, health care, childcare, and the pension system — all the physical and social infrastructure we now depend on every day. There is no excuse for not continuing to use the Bank of Canada in the same way for present infrastructure needs. Jerry Ackerman, Ph.D., Financial Analyst, Parham
Reading suggestions for ‘Happiness Day’ The International Day of Happiness (March 12) or ‘Happiness Day’, as it is also known, was founded by the United Nations in 2012 on the basis that the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal. If you have followed the publishing world at all in the last decade, you will see this sentiment clearly reflected. There is a huge market for books that examine the human quest to understand the underpinnings of happiness. The realms of psychology, neuroscience, sociology, cultural anthropology, behavioral economics and even anecdotal self-help, have amassed dozens of essential reads which illuminate the most fundamental aspiration of all human existence: avoid suffering and foster lasting well-being. Here are some of these reads, available at the library: Stumbling on Happiness by Harvard psychologist David Gilbert is one of the best-researched yet easily digestible books on the art and science of happiness.
With equal parts wit and scientific rigor, it explores the many misconceptions we have about happiness and the tricks our minds play on us. The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Coles’ Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun by Gretchen Rubin was released in 2009 and became an instant bestseller. Rubin set out to test humanity’s many theories about what makes us happy, from ancient philosophies to pop culture prescriptions to the latest scientific studies. She chronicled the experience on her blog, which was eventually adapted into a book. The Happiness Project is a great read. While it is technically self-help, it is entertaining, clever and has an interesting structure that goes far beyond the usual ‘here’s what you should do and how you should do it.’
Rubin’s subsequent book Happier At Home: Kiss More, Jump More, Abandon a Project, Read Samuel Johnson, and My Other Experiments in the Practice of Everyday Life is also a good choice for those interested in reading about little ways one can work at improving quality of life, Notes as is her 2015 release Better Than Before: What I Learned About Making and Breaking Habits—to Sleep More, Quit Sugar, Procrastinate Less, and Generally Build a Happier Life. Martin Seligman is regarded as the father of the ‘positive psychology movement.’ Positive psychology is the antithesis to the traditional ‘disease model’ of psychology, which focuses on how to relieve suffering rather than how to amplify well-being. His book Authentic Happiness: Using the New Positive Psychology to Realize Your Potential for Lasting Fulfillment is all
Catherine Coles
about his theories on positive psychology and chock full of assessment tools rooted in cognitive science and behavioural psychology research. Finally, one of newest books on happiness is Neil Pasricha’s The Happiness Equation: Want Nothing + Do Anything = Have Everything. Pasricha, who is the author of the bestselling The Book of Awesome, uses ‘The Happiness Equation’ to illustrate how happiness can be counterintuitive. Among other things, the author examines why success doesn’t lead to happiness, why multitasking is a myth and how eliminating options leads to more choice. Released earlier this month, this book is already receiving plenty of rave reviews. Reserve any of these titles from the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries in branch or online at www.countylibrary.ca. Catherine Coles is the Manager of Library Services for L&A County.

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago March 16, 1966
n It appeared as though the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital was almost ready to accept its first patients. James Hepburn, the hospital’s administrator, announced that he hoped to have the hospital ready and open for business on the Monday of the coming week, but Tuesday would more likely be the first day of operation for the brand new health-care facility. The hospital’s board of directors had just held its annual general meeting. Dr. Brant E. Bergstrome was re-elected as chairman. n Some flooding in the basement of the L&A County Memorial Building on Dundas Street was causing something of a quandary for the county’s property committee. The county was hoping to install a new drainage line south from the building into the town’s sewer system. However, running parallel to Dundas Street was the Bell Telephone conduit; the conduit could be damaged as a result. The committee was warned that, should county proceed with the drainage solution, the county would be liable for any damage to the telephone line.
30 Years Ago March 19, 1986
n In the end, efforts to avoid a strike by L&A County’s secondary school teachers proved to be unsuccessful. The 183 teachers officially went on strike; students at the county’s three high schools showed up for school only to be told that school had been cancelled for the day. Board chairperson Karen Mifflin warned that, if past strikes by Ontario teachers were any indication, this one could be a long one. On average, teacher walkouts in the province lasted about 45 days. Negotiations had been ongoing right up until the day before the walkout began. n A showdown between L&A County council and the Kingston, Frontenac, L&A Health Unit was brewing over the latest health unit levy. County council indicated that it would not pay the rate struck by the health unit board of directors. In fact, the health unit only approved its own budget by a 5-4 vote. At the crux of the disagreement was the manner in which the health unit calculated its levy. Frontenac County also disagreed with the levy. Health unit officials said that L&A’s and Frontenac’s concerns would be dealt with at the board’s next meeting later that month.

Spring cleaning with an Iranian twist This week I thought I would extend a little from my design column and wish everyone “Happy Nowruz!” Nowruz is the traditional Iranian festival of spring which starts at the exact moment of the vernal equinox, commencing the start of spring. It is the most cherished of all the Iranian festivals and is celebrated by all. It is considered as the start of the New Year among Iranians. The names comes from ‘Avestan’ meaning “new day/daylight.” Nowruz is celebrated March 20/21 each year, at the time the sun enters Aries and spring begins. Here in our time zone, Nowruz comes this
Sunday at 12:30 a.m. You may wonder why I’m writing about this celebration. My husband Saeid is from Iran and celebrates each year. I’ve started learning about the celebration to teach our children about their Persian culture. Also in conversations with friends, clients, and you the readers, they’ve found this celebration interesting. Nowruz has been celebrated for at least 3000 years and is deeply rooted in the rituals and traditions of the Zoroastrian religion, that influenced later religions including Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Nowruz is considered one of

One translates to, “May my sickly pallor be yours and your red glow be mine.” The phrase symbolizes trading in the yellow colour which represents sickness, to red, which is a sign of health. A major part of the New Year celebrates involves setting the “Haft Seen”, also known as the seven Ss. The traditional table setting includes seven items that all begin with the letter “seen” in the Persian alphabet. These seven things usually are: Seeb (apple) symbolizing health and beauty, Sabzeh (green sprouts) Design Time symbolizing rebirth, Serkeh before Nowruz, Chahar (vinegar) symbolizing age Shanbe Suri is celebrated to and patience, Samanoo cast away the misfortunes (sweet pudding made out of of the past year. the largest celebrations of the year with Iranians of all religions taking part in the festivities. In the month leading up to Nowruz, households purchase new spring clothes and spring clean the home. Spring cleaning the home is called Khaneh (house or home) Tekani (shake-up). During Khaneh-Tekani all members of the home help to thoroughly clean every nook and cranny of the home. Debris from the past is removed. After the cleaning, fragrant plants such as hyacinths are brought into the house to freshen the air. Some people burn a wild rue (esfand). It is believed that these aromatic fumes help ward off evil spirits to the New Year. The last Wednesday

Mahi (fish) symbolizing life, Tokhmeh Morgh (painted eggs) symbolizing fertility, Ayyeneh (mirror) symbolizing lighting. On the day of Nowruz, many Iranians will throw large celebrations inviting family and friends. A large meal is prepared with traditional dishes of Sabzi Polo, a dish of rice cooked with fresh herbs and served with smoked fish and freshly prepared fish and Kookoo Sabzi, an egg dish with fresh herbs. On the 13th day, known as Sizdah Bedar, it’s typical for families to spend the day outside. Iranians are known to go to parks for a picnic, since it is believed that remaining outdoors will help one avoid misfortune. Another tradition involves throwing green sprouts (that were on the Haft Seen table) into rivers and lakes to symbolize the rebirth of plants and the end of the New Year festivities. A late-winter storm to remember It was called the “worst blizzard in the province’s history!” So read the headlines on March 3 and 4, 1947, after the Mother Nature had completed a seemingly endless deposit of the white stuff. Various estimates of the total accumulation were
bantered about rather freely — and the fact there were high winds blowing it hither and yon complicated the measurements — but two feet was the commonlyused figure. More than 300 schools in eastern Ontario’s towns, villages, and rural

In the Napanee area some motorists braved the storm to get home, taking eight hours to crawl through the blowing snow before arriving home. One man left home at 3 a.m. Sunday to head for the city, but had to turn back at Deseronto. Transports were in “dry dock” both here and in Belleville. It was expected to take days to open roads for safe travel. Train travel was at a

‘GENTLY USED’ LADIES CLOTHING! CHOICE SELECTION OF
en onto her tricycle and severed an artery. One headline, bordering on the amusing, declared “only the stork was on schedule!” Several babies entered the world at this inopportune time — one (near Cobourg) in the back of the expectant parent’s car. Tragedy — or near tragedy — did strike near Pickering, and man abandoned his stuck car, and took off across the fields, only to fall into a snow-filled gully, sinking until the white stuff was almost over his head. Fortunately, two young men heard his cries for help and rescued him. At least six perished from varying scenarios the blizzard caused. Inconvenience reigned supreme, with food and fuel supplies out of reach. Two men were known to have skied five miles to the nearest store for food. Rural mail service was curtailed for over a week. Fortunately temperatures were not extreme, hovering between —1 to —5C. This writer recalls three distinctive scenarios. First, being able to stand on the snowbanks along our county road side, looking down on the top of the road grader equipped with a ‘V’ plow, while being able to reach out a touch the top of the telephone poles. Secondly, I accompanied my father and two dozen neighbourhood men, to shovel ahead of the plow to free a family for a funeral of their loved one. Thirdly, there was a snowdrift which reached from the front lawn of our farm house right up to the floor of the balcony, which was 12 feet (360 cm) above ground. Could anything good from such a crisis? For kids — no school for at least a week, of course. But as usual, the spirit of community flourished. As Charles DeGaulle once said: “Crisis brings out the best in the best of us.” That prevailed!

NOTL Wolves steal OT victory in Game 1 of OMHA Finals Midget Stars look to regroup during nine day layoff between Games 1 and 2
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
short memory would be a boon for the Napanee Midget BB Stars, who opened their OMHA Ontario Finals with a stunning 2-1 overtime loss to the visiting Niagara-onthe-Lake Wolves on Friday, falling behind 2-0 in the first-to-six-points series. Playing before a boisterous Strathcona Paper Centre crowd, the Stars came out strong in the first period. The home team grabbed the early lead when Jake Wales picked up a pass at the Wolves blue line. He fed Jason McCracken who spotted Ryan Kirkpatrick open in front. Kirkpatrick made good on the pass, converting it for Napanee's only goal of the game. The lead held until late in the second when NOTL’s Jake Vanderveen finally found a way to break through the Stars' defense and beat Jon White. Both teams played a cautious third period into overtime and were just about a minute away from splitting

the points before Vanderveen potted the game winner. “They had a great jump at the beginning of every period,” Stars head coach Jim McKinney said of his team. “The first period was a very entertaining battle, back-and-forth and I thought we played our system pretty well. In the second period we got away from our system with all kinds of turn overs at the blue line. We get everybody coming out of the zone but the puck doesn’t. That creates a lot of problems.” Fortunately for the Stars, White was there to bail them out on several occasions. Down at the other end of the ice the usually sound Stars foiled their own scoring chances by getting a little ahead of themselves. “I think we had seven offsides in the second,” said McKinney. “We hadn’t seen that kind of play all year. We had some excited kids in that situation (being Game 1 of the finals).” The loss marked the first defeat the midget Stars had suffered on home ice this season.
Because of the March Break, the Stars will see a nine day layoff between Game 1 and 2, not returning to action until Sunday when they travel to Niagara-onthe-Lake. “We’ll have some fun, get on the ice and just get back at it,” White said of the layoff. “We’re out there to win hockey games but at the same time when we’re having fun we just play so much better as a team. We play together and when we’re doing that we win hockey games.” The Stars will return home for Game 3 on March 24 for a 6:30 p.m. puck drop. They'll hope for another large crowd as they look to start a new home winning streak. Adam Prudhomme-Staff “It’s lots of fun,” White Keegan Wayte of the Napanee Midget BB Stars (left) battles a Niagara-on- said of playing to large the-Lakes Wolves player for puck possession during the opening game of home town crowds. “The last time a midget team won the OMHA Finals, held Friday at the SPC. was 30 years ago. The fact that we got would go March 26 in NOTL home team. “The boys are a in the towel. “It’s our first loss since to one minute left in over- before returning to Napanee little bit down in there but at the same time they’re the first round, the guys time playing not our best on March 27 for a 7 p.m. here for a series. If the series went the champions may lose a game want to win,” said White. “At game for a full game we’re distance, Game 6 would be the same time, we didn’t going to be alright.” along the way.” March 28 in NOTL.
Panthers sweep away Raiders; win Tod Trophy BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
he Napanee Raiders’ 27th season came to a rather unceremonious end on Saturday night as the visiting Port Hope Panthers battered them 8-1 in Game 4 of the Empire B Junior C Hockey League finals to sweep the series. Heavy favourites coming into the series, the Panthers seemed to only get stronger with each game before completely annihilating the competition in Game 4 to clinch the Tod Trophy for a second straight year, both times via a sweep of the Raiders. “(Napanee) had a game plan from the start,” Panthers head coach Mat Goody said when asked what led to his team’s success in the
T
Penalty trouble dooms Napanee in ugly season ending 8-1 loss series. “Napanee executed it fairly well throughout the series but we just kind of took things apart and stayed the course. It just proved to be the right thing to do in the end.” Port Hope left little drama in the clinching game, as captain Dan Lagrois scored the game’s first goal just shy of the four minute mark, kicking off a five goal opening period. Lagrois would finish the night with a hat trick and an assist. The lone bright spot for the Raiders came early in the third when Aidan McFarland scored the home team's only goal of the game, converting on a pass from Michael Parr. By then the game was long out of reach. The Raiders never seemed to fully recover from
their loss in Game 1of the series, which saw them blow a 3-1 lead and ultimately fall in overtime. “It set the tone for us,” said Goody. “This year was a really good season for us, maybe sometimes when that happens you come in a little too over confident. We came out a little flat the first two periods (in Game 1). We started to come alive in the third. I thought it was a huge win for us moving forward character wise to know that we can do that sort of thing.” Sensing their season was slipping away the Raiders may have let their frustrations get the best of them as they racked up 80 minutes worth of penalties on 22 infractions.

Roman Justason, aka 'The Roman Warrior' was a first time goaltender for the Napanee Home Hardware Novice HL Stars this weekend, shutting down several shots during an exhibition game versus a tough Stirling Blues team. Although the Stars lost, his team was quite pleased with his performance.

A dangerous team at even strength, the Panthers ran rampant over the shorthanded Raiders, scoring on five of their 12 power-plays. It was a far cry from the normally disciplined style of play the Raiders had displayed all season. “It was an emotional night, at some points maybe emotions got the to them a little bit knowing what was at stake,” Raiders head coach Mike Hartwick said following the loss. edged the talent of the Panthers, noting they have now topped the Raiders 11 straight times counting the regular season. Despite the ugly finish, the Raiders’ season had its share of upside. “There was a lot of success,” said Hartwick. “All the guys had moments throughout the season. We had a lot of highlights and made a lot of big plays and sacrifice and many guys had fantastic years individually and as a unit. However, there’s always room for improvement.” Though they were swept in the finals for a second straight season, Napanee’s
2015-16 campaign was a marked improvement over previous ones. Their 52 regular season points was their highest output since 200910. With no over-agers on their roster, they are at least eligible to return every player. They will however undoubtedly lose guys to school commitments, Junior A teams and in McFarland’s case, possibly the OHL. At least on paper they won’t lose any guys to age. “It is nice knowing we’ll have a good core coming back,” added Hartwick. Meanwhile as the Raiders begin to look ahead to next year the Panthers
are gearing up to tackle some unfinished business. Last spring they came within one victory of winning the Clarence Schmalz Cup, losing to the Essex 73’s in Game 7. “There’s eight guys returning from last year’s team,” said Goody. “It’s a huge goal for us to get back to where we were last year. That’s what we set out to do this year at the start.” Their quest will begin against the winner of the Central Ontario league, which currently sees the Port Perry Mojacks leading the Clarington Hawks 3-1. Their next game is scheduled for this evening.

Provincial budget promises “Jobs for Today and Tomorrow

promises to grow our economy, create jobs and provide Ontarians better access to services while balancing the budget by 2017-18. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) was encouraged by the budget’s focus on growing the economy and creating jobs. Growing the economy is what Ontario’s agri-food sector does every day, fueling the economy with jobs, food, processing and spin-off benefits to rural and local communities. The specifics of how the budgeted programs will be implemented will require a lot of work in the coming weeks and months, but OFA is pleased that some of our pre-budget recommendations are being addressed. Our budget recommendations focused on ensuring our sector can continue with the tremendous growth opportunities that contribute to a thriving economy. The provincial budget promises to make the biggest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario’s history — $160 billion over 12 years — supporting an average of more than 110,000 jobs each year. This investment must extend to rural communities and farm businesses. OFA has been pushing for investments in rural infrastructure, specifically government funding to expand natural gas infrastructure to lower business costs on farms and throughout rural Ontario and investments in our rural communities. We will continue to work for on-farm investment on climate change adaptation initiatives as part of important rural infrastructure spending. The province announced increases in infrastructure funding for small municipalities and the rural infrastructure Connecting Links program. OFA worked closely with rural municipalities for reinstatement and improvement of Connecting Links. When it comes to growing business on the farm, the budget committed to work with Ontario’s farm community to improve taxes on value-added farm activities. Despite the budget’s commitment to ‘reducing electricity costs for business’, no mention of a farm/industrial electricity rate was included. With one of the highest electricity rates, Ontario farmers remain at a competitive disadvantage, making it difficult to grow our own farm businesses. OFA has been advocating for the provincial government to take action on climate change. We have promoted a Cap and Trade system that would acknowledge the carbon offsets the agricultural industry offers and recognize the efforts farmers are already making to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. OFA was pleased to see a commitment to support on-farm emissions reductions, along with a commitment that agriculture will offer offsets to covered sectors. Investments in a Cap and Trade system are outlined in the budget, including increases in gasoline and a rise in the cost of natural gas. Everyone will feel the impact of these fuel cost increases as part of the Cap and Trade system, but OFA understands the revenues will be invested in projects to address climate change and enable agriculture offsets. OFA is watching the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affair’s budget which is projected to decrease by $25 million. We await further details of this reduction and will be addressing any cuts that affect programs for our members. The government was clear that its number one priority is to grow the economy and create jobs. The agri-food sector is a vital part of that growth. And we look forward to continued collaboration between government and industry to meet the Premier’s agri-food growth challenge that will see 120,000 new jobs added to our sector by 2020.

public meeting should be held before donating the King Street property. “TransCanada has stepped forward to take the lead on this. I can’t think of a better place for a family home than right next to a park, and a river and a playground. I love the idea that we could support interested staff to donate to the project; it’s been a long time since we’ve had an opportunity like this,” said Deputy Mayor Marg Isbester. Part of the motion stated that interested staff could donate a shift worth of time
to the construction. Lucas felt that since there were not more options of surplus land the municipality could donate instead of the King Street property, then “maybe we can’t afford to provide something at this time.” He said the municipality made an “obligation” to those on King Street and should hold a public meeting before moving forward. Council voted on Isbester’s motion to donate the King Street property, seconded by Ward 1 Councillor Mike Schenk and carried in a 4-2 vote.

will be responsible to pay for the unsettled property taxes. Dafoe said the property will be sold late summer but there is no guarantee that the municipality will be successful in its bid. “The only reason I’m not in favour of (the King Street property) is because I think Ginger Street is the better lot for it, because of the situation behind it. I don’t really see the rush; I don’t know what the big rush is. Are there no other lots in Napanee than one right beside a park?” Harvey asked, adding that she felt a

A Habitat for Humanity home is moving forward in Greater Napanee after council approved a property located on King Street. Council discussed donating the building lot, located at 231 King Street, and eventually carried a motion to provide the property for the project in a 4-2 vote. Ward 4 Councillor Carol Harvey and Ward 5 Councillor Shaune Lucas opposed the motion, saying the property wasn’t ideal for the project. Ward 2 Councillor Max Kaiser was not present at last Tuesday’s regular council meeting. The Habitat for Humanity project is in partnership with TransCanada, which will pay for a large portion of the project. The partners
of donating the land. A property on Ginger Street became the second option in council’s discussion; however, the town does not yet own the property. “It’s a numbered company that owns it that’s been dissolved, from my belief. We haven’t been able to get in touch with them since I’ve been with the municipality. This lot is going up for tax sale,” explained Greater Napanee infrastructure services manager Peter Dafoe. The property will be sold to the highest sealed bid and the buyer

approached council last month to ask for the town to donate land in order to move the project forward. “I’m not in favour of donating this land. I understand the trade-off with TransCanada; I think it’s the wrong location. This land is budding up against the park that we had discussions about a number a years ago and in my opinion shouldn’t be on the surplus lands list,” said Lucas. Years ago council decided the land for the King Street Park would not be occupied without a public meeting. “I don’t think it’s inside the King Street Park; it’s outside the King Street Park. We promised people that if we sold King Street Park we would have a public meeting; not for this lot,” said Mayor Gord Schermerhorn before voting in favour
