Locals rallying to protest Hydro One’s billing system Protest set for Saturday in Kingston BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
ver 13,000 people from across Ontario have come together to make a stand against rising Hydro One rates, including some local ratepayers struggling to pay their bills. For the past few years, escalating Hydro One bills has been a heated topic. Thousands of people from across the province have come together on social media to share stories, support and rally against Hydro One. ‘Hydro One – Enough is Enough’ is a Facebook page that’s been created for those affected by rising hydro costs to share information and rally for lower costs. Though it’s been around for about three years, it’s garnered a lot of attention in the past few months. The group plans petitions and protests throughout Ontario. The next protest will take place Saturday in Kingston. “It’s the add-ons and the HST. The biggest thing is, this is a necessity and we’re charged HST on it. The add-ons are horrible. It’s terrible,” said Lorie Lawlor, a local member of the group who is struggling to pay her ever-rising hydro bills. “I live by myself, I heat only two rooms, I go home and I put on layers of clothing, I use the most conservative amount, turn off my hot water heater. I couldn’t use less hydro and my bills are $450. I don’t use my furnace because I can’t afford to,” Lawlor added. Lawlor said even though she does live in a mobile home, which normally means less insulation and higher hydro costs, her bills have tripled since 2009. Lawlor, who works full time, is now faced
O
with the question: what is most important to pay for? She said her neighbours are in the same situation. “We’re sharing groceries. We can’t afford to live. It’s everybody. Everybody is trying to pay hydro because they’re so threatening that we’re dropping the ball on our other bills,” Lawlor said. “People are literally choose between paying their hydro bills and buying food, and when you buy food you need hydro to cook it. … People are literally not eating. Because, what are you going to do? Freeze to death?” she asked. Lawlor and her neighbours share food, carpool, and pick up sale items for one another when someone goes into town. She said it’s the only way they can make ends meet in order to pay their hydro bills. Last year Lawlor’s highest hydro bill was $350 and she used her heat regularly. This year she has reduced her heat almost completely and her bills still average around $450. “I work day shift, I don’t have heat on at home except the bare minimum, and I’m talking below 50 degrees. (And I am) working full-time,” Lawlor said. Each day, Lawlor waits until after 7 p.m. to cook her dinner in order to take advantage of Hydro One’s low-peak period rates. “Here’s the other thing that’s killing everybody: the time of use between 5-7 p.m. – people need to feed their children. I myself don’t have any, but people need to feed their children,” Lawlor added. Jeanette Kosnaski, one of the organizers of the ‘Hydro One – Enough is Enough’ group, said rural residents suffer higher hydro bills.

Dep. Mayor calling on dog owners to stoop and scoop Maximum fine of $200 for anyone caught not picking up after their dog
BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
reater Napanee deputy mayor Marg Isbester says if people don’t start picking up after their dogs in public spaces, dogs may not be permitted in these areas in the future. After going to the boardwalk at Springside Park last week, Isbester was disappointed to see the walkway was a mess due to people walking their dogs and not picking up after them. Despite two signs at Springside advising dog walkers to pick up after their dogs, as well as bags provided at the beginning of the walkway, it is becoming almost impossible to enjoy the boardwalk during the winter months. However, it’s not just the boardwalk - it’s every-
G
where, Isbester added. Even the fairgrounds and areas downtown have been affected.
“When I had my grandchildren here yesterday, just to see what the falls were like, it was sickening.” Marg Isbester, Napanee deputy mayor “When I had my grandchildren down here yesterday, just to see what the falls were like, it was sickening. There were some other people here and they were just astounded. We’re teaching the kids that that’s okay,” said Isbester last week. “What really bothers me is people will complain that it’s here so staff will

have to clean it up and then they’ll complain that staff isn’t doing something somewhere else. That’s the tough part,” Isbester added. She admitted that even though the boardwalk is not maintained during the winter, it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be taken care of. According to town staff, By-law 03-38 states that, “Dogs defecating on other than private property is subject to a maximum fine of $200.” Isbester said Communities in Bloom and local volunteers help to make the boardwalk and other public spaces attractive and clean each year and it’s saddening to see that a couple people are ruining these spaces for everyone. “Communities in Bloom is I guess why I take a lot of ownership in this place and so do they. They
have worked their butts off to make this nice down here,” said Isbester, adding the issue has never been a problem in the summer. “Maybe we should just gate it off, shut it down, and say, ‘Sorry, you can’t use it (in the winter.)’ Which means the ducks and the geese won’t get fed that are here. There are all kinds of downs,” added Isbester. “People have got to realize that it’s illegal, there are going to be a lot more cameras down here and I will push to have things prosecuted to the full extent of the law.” Isbester and a group of community volunteers have taken to the parks and public trails over the past week to help clean up the mess and ask that anyone taking their dog in these spaces do their best to keep the community clean.

Riverfront Festival set to return in June Popular event back for second year BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
A fleet of antique and classic boats will set course for the Napanee River this summer, serving as the focal point of Greater Napanee’s second annual Riverfront Festival. Scheduled for the weekend of June 12-14, the festival will feature kayak and canoe races, boat demonstrations, beach volleyball, vendors and live multicultural music and dancing. The festival is looking to build of the success of the first one, which saw the St. Lawrence II Brigantine dock at the boat launch at Conservation Park for the weekend. “This year we thought we would try some classic boats,” said Vicki Hallum of the Town of Greater Napanee. “We have approximately 15 classic antique boats coming in.”
The boats will belong to members of the Trent Severn Antique and Classic Boat Association, which is based out of Peterborough. They travel to shows throughout the summer showcasing their unique boats. “We’re going to have wagon rides for people to go back and forth to the downtown,” said Hallum, noting they’re hoping to encourage visitors to shop Napanee’s downtown throughout the weekend. Last year saw about 15 kayakers and canoeists take part in a race on the Napanee River, and organizers are hoping even more will sign up this time around. The start line was the boat launch at Conservation Park and saw paddlers race through the open waters of the river to a buoy and then turning around and heading back for the dock. “We’re going to try and build upon that and keep that going annually,” Hallum said of the races. “We would really like to see
teams enter as groups.” For the non-nautical festival goers, there will be a beach volleyball tournament held near the Splash Pad. It will be similar to the popular ball hockey tournament that is held during the Winter Chill Festival. More details of the Riverfront Festival will be made available in the coming weeks. For now Hallum says they are encouraging people to start thinking about taking part in the boat races or volleyball tournament and to save the date. An outdoor movie will also take place during the festival, though the featured film is yet to be announced. Organizers are actively seeking corporate sponsorships for the various events that will be taking place throughout the weekend. Vendor space will also be made available in the park throughout the weekend. Anyone interested in more information on that can contact the town at 613-354-3415.

Things are getting ugly... Get ready for what appears to be a most polarizing election campaign. It took only less than one day last week for the rhetoric to get ramped up to dizzying levels. On Monday night, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau made headlines when he essentially suggested in a speech given in Toronto that Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservatives were stoking anti-Muslim sentiment for political gain. Less than 24 hours later, Conservative Minister of Public Safety Steven Blaney invoked memories of the Holocaust in order to sell Parliament (and, by extension, the public) on Bill C51, legislation that would give the government and its affiliated agencies more tools with which to fight extremism and terrorism. (A Conservative MP, Lawrence Toet, upped the ante with a mailout to residents in his riding suggesting that anyone who opposes Bill C51 believes that “terrorists are victims”.) So, if we’re taking stock of the underlying narratives going on here, it’s pretty ugly. One is designed to portray Conservatives as anti-Muslim fearmongerers. The other is designed to portray any opposition to C51 as tantamount to inviting a new holocaust and/or mollycoddling terrorists. Well, that doesn’t seem like good place to start a meaningful debate from, does it? What’s so disheartening, and disturbing, is that it’s all designed to move votes — to demonize the other guys, and to reap the electoral rewards. Or, perhaps more specifically, it’s a ploy to demonize the other guys and to build a partisan fundraising campaign around it. It’s still more than a few months away from a federal election. If this is what they’re like six months out from an election, what more could we be in store for? Maybe it’s time our politicians take a deep breath and ramp down the rhetoric. It’s wholly unnecessary, and it’s hardly conducive to a worthwhile discussion. While this kind of rhetoric does a good job of firing up those who’ve already got their minds made up about the upcoming race when it come to the Conservatives or Liberals, it makes non-partisans want to tune out altogether. We wonder why people aren’t as engaged in the political process as much as they once were — following last week’s dramatics, we shouldn’t have to ponder that mystery for very long. Enough dramatics. More substance, please.

Tax meeting should have been rescheduled On March 10, I came to the question-and-answer period and council meeting. As the question-andanswer period was to start at 6:45 p.m., I got to the town hall before 6:30 — only to find that the council chambers was already full. The stairs were full; I got as far as halfway up the first set of stairs. As time for the meeting got closer, people crowded together more and I got as far as the landing on top of the stairs, so that if I stood on my toes, I could just see a little of what was going on in the council chamber. In the meantime, more people had come and they were lined up all the way down the stairs and out into the street. Then, two police officers and a person from the fire department worked their way up the stairs and into the main hall. Seeing the number of people that were unable to get into the hall, we felt that the meeting should be postponed and rescheduled at another time at a much bigger facility. Because there
must have been many more people in the council chamber than the fire code allowed, we thought that the person from the fire department would cancel the meeting — but no such luck. Then the mayor finally started the meeting and settled in his chair. We thought he might reschedule the meeting. Maybe he was not aware of the people standing in the cold and dark, wanting to participate in this meeting. So, he carried right on, outlining how the meeting was going to be run. The only thing I could hear was the last thing he said — and it was that if anyone yelled at him, he would cancel the meeting, because only his wife was allowed to yell at him. So then I thought, maybe one of the councillors would suggest that this was getting out-of-hand, but nothing was said, so apparently they didn’t worry about the people in the street either.

Then when the deputations began, I hoped that these people would refuse to give their deputations until people that had come were properly seated in comfortable surroundings so that they could see and hear and participate in this meeting. But, apparently, they were not concerned about the people in the hall, stairs or in the street. So the meeting continued. After standing on my toes for an hour and only hearing and seeing just little bits, the meeting was really only just starting. I decided to go home. After standing there all that time, as a 76-year-old, I had difficulty getting to my truck. As of writing this, I had not heard what was decided at the meeting. That part is secondary to me, however. My main concern is the disrespect the mayor and the council showed toward the people that had taken the time to come to this meeting, letting them stand in the dark, cold street. There is one thing I want to say to council and the mayor: I hope you enjoy sitting in your comfy chairs while I am searching for democracy in the streets of the Town of Greater Napanee. John Sonneveld, Greater Napanee
More questions than answers after tax meeting On March 10, I attended the meeting at Greater Napanee Town Hall hoping to get some enlightenment on the tax issue in Greater Napanee. The first order of business was councillor Shaune Lucas’ motion that the tax system in Greater Napanee be reviewed. It appears that Greater Napanee has a unique two-tier system due to having a large urban population along with a large rural population. I came away with far more questions than answers due to the myths
and misconceptions surrounding the issue. I have always believed that residents within the town limits should pay a higher rate due to the conveniences at hand, but is it, or should it be, disproportionate? Water and sewer plus natural gas seem to be an issue. I don’t know why, as all three are ‘user pay’, no different than telephones. Street lamps and ploughed sidewalks were also brought up. Under law, it is the residents’ responsibility to clear the sidewalk in front of their property. Having street lamps is

almost a necessity within the town. Not having that light pollution is one of the beauties of living in the country. As we no longer have town limits, where do we draw the line as to ‘town’ and ‘country’? Do the villages of Selby and Roblin pay urban or rural taxes? The mayor gave a very good speech on how Napanee has always pulled together to better the community, but I was disappointed that he and most of council shelved this sticky issue for their successors to deal with. If the system is
indeed illegal, it should be dealt with on that aspect alone, or lobby the provincial government to make it legal. One realization I did come away with is, the ward system may work in large centers such as Kingston and Belleville, but in Greater Napanee it draws lines in council of ‘them’ against ‘us’, where each ward is more like a fiefdom. Maybe the only way to heal this festering would is to go to elections at large. Larry Craigen, Greater Napanee
The ‘After’ Picture
Time to tell Hydro One that enough is enough Why is it rural Ontarians are paying delivery charges which are as much as or more than their actual usage? Why do the large urban areas such as Toronto pay a flat rate for delivery while rural pays varied rates depending on usage? Why are we still paying a ‘debt retirement’ charge every month? Surely whatever the debt was it must be paid off by now, we’ve been paying it for years. Lastly, why are we paying the harmonized sales tax on hydro? Is it not a necessity of life? I’ve been told that you can’t even go off the grid if you have a mortgage because it’s a requirement of the mortgage companies that you have hydro to your residence so in my opinion, that makes it a necessity. I have recently joined a group on Facebook, over 12,000 members strong, Hydro One Enough is Enough, that is trying to fight Hydro One and their totally unreasonable billing practices. If you or someone you know is being gouged by Hydro One you need to join this group and join the fight to make our billing fair, it’s a closed group so request membership and they will accept. This group is organizing protests, contacting MPs, the Ombudsman, newspapers, radio and TV stations and whoever else will listen to the voice of the people. There is a protest being arranged for this Saturday, March 21 in Kingston at 1pm in front of CKWS TV station at 170 Queen Street. If you are concerned about the escalating hydro rates in rural Ontario please
make up a sign and join this protest if at all possible. The more people that get involved the better chance we have of making things change. Anyone that can’t be at the protest is being asked to shut off their main breakers from 1-3pm on that day in support. A second huge protest is being organized for May 13 at 12 noon at Queens Park in Toronto and if you can possibly attend it would certainly help the cause. These will be peaceful protests and permits have been acquired so everything is legal. There is a petition that people are signing that will be submitted to the legislature by an MPP to Queens Park in Toronto during the protest, if you are interested in signing or want a copy, email me at the below email address so you can get your friends and family to sign them. You can also go online and sign the petition which has over 52,000 signatures so far and growing by the minute! This is the link to the petition. www.change.org/p/hydro-onehydro-one-eliminate-unfair-fees-and-thehst-from-our-bills-and-remove-inaccuratesmart-meters-from-the-province-of-ontario? The great ‘oil-gate’ ripoff Very few people, in my opinion, truly know what is happening in the oil industry aside from those who work in the oil industry. I certainly do not profess to be an expert, but I have done a little research on this topic. Saudi Arabia is able to produce the cheapest priced oil — at $40 per barrel. They want to protect their market share and have continued to produce more oil than needed in order to suffocate competitors who cannot economically produce at lower costs. The Saudis have this advantage and are using it to the fullest. As a result, oil supplies have grown and keep growing but the price of a barrel of oil and a litre at the pumps is
decreasing. Cheaper gas prices are enticing to customers who are traveling more and using more gas. I do not believe we can find out if there is a real glut or not. All we are told monthly, is that the glut is growing and by how much. Do I believe these numbers? No — where is the proof? I expect that soon we will be told that there is a shortage of gas. The price of gas is going to jump and again we will be held for ransom. Today, on March 12 when this article was written, the price of oil was down to $46.65 per gallon and the price of gas at the pumps varies between 93 and 97 per litre. The low price of oil will allow oil companies to buy back millions of their mar-
ket shares at very low prices. Why? Because when the prices soar again, they will make an absolute fortune selling it at the higher price. Is this legal? Yes it is, unless proven otherwise. How many of us (the average consumer) can afford to play the oil market? When oil was at an alltime high of $150 per barrel, our gas at the pumps was about $1.50 per litre. The oil prices, not long ago, dropped as low as $45 per barrel but our gas was only lowered to about 85 — and not for long. When oil was at $150 per barrel, our price per litre was $1.50 (almost equal) and now that the cost of a barrel of oil is around $46.47, the price per litre at the pumps is 95 cents. Shouldn’t it be
46 to 47 cents per litre instead? I gather big oil is trying to protect their margins. All of those involved in producing and selling oil and gas must think we are all fools who just do not understand. I beg to differ. I know when I am being fleeced! There used to be a rule of thumb, that when oil was $60 a barrel, gas at the pumps was 60 per litre (or was it per gallon back then – even with service at the pumps)? Now, however, when the price of oil goes up, gas corporations quickly raise the price of gas at the pumps, but when the price of oil goes down, these same companies sluggishly move to pass the savings on to the consumer. If you visit most gas sta-

tions in our area, prices match within a .25 to .5 a cent. If you drive to Kingston there can be a difference of as much as 5 to 9 cents per litre compared to Napanee. I fail to understand this. I am sure my opinion will not change big oil’s way of doing business; but perhaps it will make them think we are watching and they may become a little less aggressive in their ways — a pipe dream, perhaps? Rest assured that the price of oil will recover to great heights making the big oil companies even wealthier and returning them to the point of having too much influence over our lives something they have been doing for over 100 years.
Big Oil companies are simply taking advantage of all of us. Canada sells oil to the U.S. and they sell it to their customers for less money than we can buy it at the pumps in Canada. Go figure! If you get a chance, get a copy of the following book; it is a great read: The Tyranny of Oil, by Antonia Juhasz. What an eye opener! One of the ways we can influence the price of gas is by using less. This way prices will go down in order to attract more business. As our use increases prices will go up again. It truly is a vicious circle. We can win if we all use less — a lot less. Let’s start today. Pierre Cliche, Greater Napanee

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago March 24, 1965 n Sheffield Township was divided on the question of how to proceed with regard to the future of its high school. There was a move afoot in the township to join the Napanee high school area. One member of the Sheffield school board suggested that it was costing more for the township to operate its own school rather than have township students attend the Napanee school. Another factor prompting the township to consider the future of the school was the fact that two of its three permanent teachers were planning to resign, as was the principal. n A plan to make a right-angle intersection at the corners of Hamburg Road and Hawley Road was not sitting well with at least one member of Lennox and Addington County council. Harold Creighton, reeve of South Fredericksburgh, said that he was representing the residents of his township who told him that they didn’t agree with the road development. The project came to the table as a recommendation from the county’s five-person roads committee, of which Creighton was also a member.
35 Years Ago March 19, 1980 n Employers in the Napanee area would be invited to voluntarily join a program to combat unemployment overpayments over the next few weeks. Joe Moric, supervisor for investigation and control at the Kingston office of Employment and Immigration Canada, says he will be making appointments during the next two weeks to visit local employers. The program would catch people right away if they had started a job without notifying the unemployment insurance office, he said. n Twelve lakes in the northern part of Lennox and Addington County were facing the risk of losing their fish stocks in the future, said Ontario Ministry of Environment biologist Reg Genge of Kingston. The lakes had been tested showing less than 100 milligrams per litre of alkalinity, which meant that the fish “can’t withstand the acid rain,” said Genge. Acid rain results when sulphur dioxide and nitric oxide react with water in the air, he said. Much of the polluting factor is picked up from “emissions of industrial factories south of the border. It can be transported several hundred miles by winds.”

Recalling Ford’s Model T ‘Tin Lizzy’ Glen R. Goodhand O n Dec. 18, 1999 the Model T Ford was voted the “Car of the Century”. The original list of automobiles from countries worldwide totalled 200. From that number it was reduced to 100; and finally whittled down to just five, with the Tin Lizzy surviving the final vote. To most automobile enthusiasts this honour was no surprise. Over the years the seemingly indestructible “Flivver” has been called “the car that changed the world”. Up until Henry Ford’s revolutionary concept of building “a car for the great multitudes” (much like Germany’s Volkswagen—the “people’s car”), the motor vehicle had been a status symbol, painstakingly crafted by hand for the wealthy. Two years in the planning, the unstylish “T” was practical and durable, “the car that put the world on wheels”. The first production model was built on Sept. 27, 1908. The last of its kind rolled off the assembly line on May 25, 1927. While improvements, like headlights, and an electrical system with battery and starter, were made
V i s i t
Snapshots From The Past over time, the “Tin Lizzie” (“Lizzie” was slang for faithful servant”) changed little during those 19 years. “You can paint it any colour—as long as it is black”, is a statement attributed to the renowned inventor. But if he said that, it was a dated comment. No black models were available until 1914—grey, red, and green prevailed—but again in 1926 variations were
offered once more. Not only did the Model T mobilize the common people, but also it was part of a revolution in auto manufacturing. In 1913 Mr. Ford introduced the assembly line in his factories, enabling a single car to be made eight times faster. He also pioneered the eight hour day and doubled the normal workingman’s wage to $5 hourly. For all that, however, the simplicity in the vehicle itself seemed to be offset by the complication in driving it. There were three pedals on the floor, two levers on the steering column, and one floor lever to the left of the driver. The positions into which the pedals and that one lever must be shifted, for forward and reverse, and the braking system, defied imagination. The Model T had only two forward speeds, and it was apparent by the sound of the motor (it seemed almost to stall as the revs adjusted) when the change took place. If you stomped on all three pedals at once, it would stop quickly. Contrariwise, the flivver’s versatility was
phenomenal. Not only was the engine and drivetrain fundamental to creating a two-seater, an ambulance, a bus, or a fire truck, but it could be adapted for other uses as well. With an added set of drive wheels and skis, it became a snowmobile—ideal for rural mail delivery or doctor’s rounds in winter. Some removed a rear wheel and attached an appropriate pulley for driving a threshing machine or operating a sawmill. During WW II some were converted into “auto-traks”, a tractor made out of a car. Many seniors will remember with envy those who still boasted ownership of this timeless classic when it came blueberrypicking time. While most were forced to leave their hydraulic brakes and soft suspensions a mile from the bushes, Model T owners drove right to the best spots, because of the clearance the flivver’s suspension offered. In the New Millennium antique car clubs all over North America parade them as treasures from the past, and a tribute paid to the foresight and ingenuity of one little man with a big dream—Henry T. Ford.

HYDRO ONE | Rural residents call for standard rate CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “People who live in the bigger cities, like Ottawa, Toronto, they have their own hydro, so they’re not getting the delivery charges we get. Their range from $12-$60 delivery charges per month. Our bills are anywhere from $300-$800 a month,” explained Kosnaski. The group is asking
that the additional costs be removed and to have one set rate, as done in large urban areas. “We’re demanding the removal of the hidden charges to make up the delivery charge and be replaced to one standard charge that would be the same for all customers of Ontario. what we rural people want too,” said Kosnaski. She added that HST charges on hydro bills are “ridiculous,” as hydro is a basic need. “Hydro is now considered a necessity, especially for people that are renting apartments. They have no choice, they can’t put in a wood stove. A lot of these apartments are electric heat and that’s not by their choice. So HST on a necessity is ridiculous,” said Kosnaski. On top of that, members of the group are looking for the discontinuation of all smart metres. “We would like the smart metres to be removed, like in Saskatchewan and parts of British Columbia. Not only because of health issues but also because they’re not getting proper readings,” said Kosnaski. “It’s different all over the place. shared on the group’s Facebook page about how metres are getting false readings. “We don’t believe, amongst the hundreds and hundreds of stories, that these smart metres are working properly. And that they possibly don’t work in -30 degree weather, like our cell phones don’t, the batter drains very quickly,” Lawler explained. The same has been said for warm temperatures. Lawler said her Hydro One rates have increased so much that her hydro bill is more than the rest of her living costs combined. “With mobile homes we pay land rent and then we pay a bit of taxes on top of that. My hydro bill is now more than I pay to live, altogether, there. And here’s me, I have long johns, sweatpants, sweatshirt, winter hat, and sometimes gloves,” she explained. Sign of spring: town’s indoor market just around the corner Annual event set for March 28 at the Strathcona Paper Centre, summer market starts May 2
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Vernal weather has finally arrived in Greater Napanee which means the Talents of the Town Indoor Spring Market is just around the corner. Held at the Strathcona Centre, the market will take place March 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The always popular event will welcome 45 different vendors offering several spring-themed hand made items. “It’s a good mix of peo-
lotions, preserves, jewellery, metal works and books. “There will be pretty much anything that you can think of that’s hand made, added Tee. “Pretty much if you can think of it we have it, which is great. A sure sign of the success of the market is how quickly vendors put their name in when it’s time to register. The market always draws a large crowd and vendors are eager to be a part of it. Many of the vendors don’t operate out of a traditional brick and
ple who have participated in the past and some new ones, said Lyndsay Tee economic coordinator developer with the Town of Greater Napanee. “It will be a good day with lots of variety to choose from. For the most part, the vendors are based in the Greater Napanee region. Some of them are regulars to the town’s bi-weekly summer market. Among the items for sale at the spring market will be knitted items, art work, baked goods, wood turning, pottery, photography, soap,

just for the happy couple, but for the family and friends awaiting their return in Bridgeport, Ireland. In true Cathy Kelly style their lives are interwoven with those of their families and friends— times of happiness, anger, forgiveness, all leading to a great ending. Her books are mostly set in Ireland and most
usually have several story lines revolving around the central characters. The events make you want to shake some of them and cheer on others. The happy couple do get married in the end but the events leading up to the happy day change other lives in many ways. Loonie Auction set for March 28 at J.J.
BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter
ext weekend marks the fourth annual Loonie Auction – a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society – and organizers hope to make it their best year yet. The Loonie Auction is organized by a local Relay for Life team, which has made it their mission to fundraise year-round. The team is called ‘The Boob Brigade’ and is made up of mothers, daughters, sisters and friends affected by cancer.
N
“It used to be that once January hit we’d shift into Relay mode, but now it just goes all year, said Lisa Coles, one of the original Boob Brigade organizers. The Boob Brigade has been a Relay for Life team in Napanee since 2007, thanks to Coles and coorganizer, Michelle Kirby. Today, the team has 14 members. “Lisa and I that decided we were going to do a Relay for Life team because a really close family member had been diagnosed with breast cancer. It was our way to sort of have some kind of outlet to deal with

that. From that, we took the pink from the breast cancer ribbons and it just ballooned from there. So that’s why we’re the Boob Brigade,â€? said Kirby. “It was something that we felt we could be in control of in a situation that’s otherwise out of your control,â€? added Coles, stating the group has “snowballedâ€? into a year-round fundraising team. Since 2007, the Boob Brigade has raised nearly $35,000 for the Kingston Canadian Cancer Society, which services the Greater Napanee area. “We’re hoping this year to do at least $10,000. It’s the 10th anniversary for the Napanee Relay for Life too, so we’re hoping to make it our best year yet to celebrate that,â€? said Kirby. The Loonie Auction usually raises about $1,000 but the Boob Brigade hopes they can raise even more this year. The auction is scheduled for March 28 at J.J. O’Neill Catholic School from 1-4 p.m. There is an entry cost of $10, which will provide each participant with five tickets. Each ticket after that is a dollar. “The room will be set up with tables filled with items with a container in front of it. Three unique acts will be brought to the Lennox and Addington County Museum this spring, starting with the Chris Alfano Quartet. Alfano will be performing next Thursday as the first of the ‘Live at the Museum’ series. The show begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are $3 each. “Live at the Museum concert series will feature an eclectic mix of music and talented musicians,” said Stephen Paul, director of community and development services at Lennox and Addington County, in a press release. “Our County Museum is a wonderful heritage and cultural centre, I can’t think of a better venue to enjoy an evening of music,” Paul continued. ‘Live at the Museum’ will be a program similar to ‘Museum Kids’ and
‘Tuesday Night at the Museum.’ The program aims to introduce new visitors to the recently renovated museum and archives, Paul added. The Chris Alfano Quartet is a jazz group that excels in a number of instruments, including the clarinet, flute, alto, tenor, and soprano sax. Alfano is a local musician based out of Kingston. He has performed with a number of groups, but is known to specialize in clarinet, saxophone and flute. He has shared the stage with a number of great Canadian jazz musicians, including Don Thompson, Peter Appleyard, Mike Murley, David Braid, Jon McLeod, and Carol Wellsman, to name a few. On top of that, he has performed with the National Arts Centre Orchestra under the direction of Pinchas Zukerman and with the Kingston Symphony Orchestra.

Hawks excel at home meet Six NDSS gymnasts score in top 3 Beaver Sports

Canada’s Britt Benn dives head first towards the try line during a World Rugby Sevens Series game, held this weekend in Atlanta, GA.
Benn makes big impact at Atlanta 7s Looking to boost Olympic bid, Benn scores a try BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Britt Benn didn’t just dip her toe in the water during her first World Rugby Seven Series action in Atlanta, GA this weekend, but rather dove into the deep end to play a huge role in Canada’s third place finish. The Napanee native scored her first series try in Canada’s 24-12 win over France, helping them finish with a 4-2 finish in the tournament. “At the time I was just in the moment so I didn't really think about how this is my first World Series try and my first IRB (International Rugby Board) tournament,” said Benn, in a phone interview from her training camp in Langford, B.C. “When you’re playing such a short game, seven minute halves, 14 minute games, you just score the try or you help score the try and then you get back to half as fast you can, catch your breath and get a second wind and you go forward.” Benn made the most of her opportunity, which arose when Canada’s captain Jen Kish was unable to play due to injury. She stepped into the reshuffled line up and helped the team secure a crucial victory. “It’s not an individual effort at all,” Benn said of her try. “It took all the girls that were there in the tournament to make that happen. I’m so grateful for them. I came in two months ago not knowing
anything, not knowing the system. All my teammates have been so patient and so understanding and just walking me step by step through our system.” Benn also played a huge hand in setting up Ghislaine Landry for a try in a hard fought 24-22 semifinal loss to New Zealand. In the third place game Canada rebounded for a 28-17 victory over Russia. They also downed Brazil 28-0 and China 31-14 before suffering their first loss, a 26-10 stumble against England. With the third place finish the Canadians collected 16 points in the series, bringing their total through three rounds to 48, placing them tied with Australia for second. New Zealand leads the way with 60 while France is fourth with 38. There’s three tours left in the season. The top four nations at the end of the season will earn a berth into the 2016 Summer Olympics. Looking back at the whirlwind weekend, Benn says it was an experience like no other she has been a part of in her already impressive international career. “I’ve always embraced and loved representing my country,” said Benn when asked about competing in her first Sevens Series tour. “When I step on that field it’s not just representing our country, it’s representing all the people who made it possible to get here. My parents back whole and the whole home
town.” Now back in B.C. Benn will have little time to bask in her success in Atlanta. She’s ramping up her training in hopes of earning a spot on the next tour, which will take place in Langford B.C. April 18-19. Even with a strong showing this weekend there's no guarantee the coach will pencil her name in for the next round. “You work hard,” Benn says of preparing for the next tour. “Everybody wants to be representing Canada at the Langford Sevens, especially now that the city were training in is hosting it. We don’t have to fly anywhere this time. The next five weeks will be a lot of hard work and I’m looking forward to it.” In the meantime she says support from back home is helping her stay focused through the intense training. “My Facebook wall is blowing up,” she said. “It’s pretty breath taking when you don’t think certain people are supportive until you get a message from them like ‘Go Brit’. It just puts a smile on my face when I’m half way across the country and I’m receiving all these ‘good lucks’ and ‘proud of you’. I’m pretty grateful to come from a town that’s been so supportive. It’s always been like that.” Following the B.C. tour Canada will play in London on May 15-16 and in Amsterdam May 22-24 in hopes of qualifying for the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.
NDSS Golden Hawk gymnastic team had a successful day at their annual Invitational Meet, held last Wednesday at the Greater Napanee Gymnastics Club. Competing against schools from across Eastern Ontario, the Hawks saw six of their own score a top three finish in a wide variety of categories. Broken down into levels based on their skill level and experience, each athlete performed a floor, bars, beam and vault routine for a panel of judges. The higher the level the more skilled the gymnast. Each individual score was tallied to determine the top finisher for each level. Addie Kaiser was first overall in Level 5, scoring first on the vault, second on beam, fourth on bars and fourth on floor. Shannon Burke was third on floor and fourth on vault to finish sixth overall in Level 5.

NDSS’ Molly-Beth Kaiser performs her ballance beam routine for the judges during the Hawks’ Invitational, held last Wednesday at GNGC. In Level 6 Jena Li placed first on vault and floor to go with third and fourth on beams and bars respectively to score a fourth place finish overall. In the Level 4 group Molly Beth Kaiser was second on vault to finish fifth
overall. Bailey Duncan was first on the vault and placed sixth overall while Logan Williams was third on bars and placed seventh. Over 100 gymnasts took part in the meet from nine different high schools.
NDSC preps for year-end Carnival Special appearance by Quinte’s Emma Jianopoulous Beaver Sports
apanee and District Skating Club’s stars will shine bright on March 29 as they host their annual season ending Carnival at the Strathcona Paper Centre. Featuring a cast made up every single skater in the program, from CanSkate to seniors, the event is a chance for students to showcase what they’ve learned throughout the winter. This year’s theme will be The Colours of Our Stars. This year’s event will be a bit different than previous years as there will be no graduating skaters. Usually the graduating senior would have their own solo dance. Instead the club has decided to give all skaters their own moment in the spot light. The year end show gives skaters of all ages and skill level a chance to skate in front of an audience. For those who don’t compete throughout the season it’s a chance to experience the thrill of a live performance. For those who follow a dedicated training routine, it’s their opportunity to show

Firelight Bantams grab 1-0 series lead Elsewhere Crunch’s atoms and bantams prepare for Game 3s Sunday on home ice
Beaver Sports
he Firelight Major Bantams began their best of five Lakeshore Finals in Whitby last Thursday. Maintaining their outstanding record away from the SPC with only two road losses all year, the boys prevailed with a 3-1 win. They gave up the only goal of the first, but applied heavy offensive zone pressure midway in the second with a barrage of shots before Cal Doyle and Alex Brady combined to set up Nelson Powers for the equalizer. Then, the team capitalized on a four minute Whitby head contact penalty as Powers fed Cam McEwen at the point. His blistering shot sailed above the outstretched glove of the net minder for the winner. Powers also added a short-handed empty net marker for the victors. Finn Pierce shone in net, stopping 24 of 25 shots. The team is back home Sunday at the SPC hosting Whitby Blue for a 5:30 p.m. puck drop. As well, Game 3 will be Tuesday at the SPC at 7:30 p.m. n The Country Traditions Novice Stars ended their Playoff run facing Kingston on Friday. They took Kingston to overtime, before being edged 4-3. After a scoreless first, the Canadians took a three-goal lead in the second. Early in the third, the team staged a comeback as Seth Rivers worked the puck to the front of the net, where a defender attempted to clear it, but instead put it through the fivehole. Duncan Clarke and Caleb South gained assists on the play as well. Shortly after, Zared Haller slid the puck into the crease area, where Nolan Cardinal fired it into the net. Then, in the last minute, they had an extra attacker on the ice with goalie Aiden Vallier on the bench, and Ben Buxton was able to get the puck to the slot for Rivers to convert the centering feed with 47.6 seconds left. In overtime, both squads had opportunities, but with only 41 seconds left, a Canadians’ rearguard shot the puck though a crowd for the winner. Vallier, who played a complete game, had little chance on the winning goal. It was an exciting ending to the semi-final Lakeshore Playoff series. n The Napanee Chiropractic.com Minor Peewee Stars played an exhibition game this past week at the SPC. They faced a Belleville AA squad, a team that had given them fits several weeks ago, and the Stars hoped to come out strong. They played a solid defensive game, but were unable to generate
T
the required offense falling 3-0. n With the season winding down, the Gray’s IDA Minor Atom A Stars played their final game of the semi-final Lakeshore Playoffs, as they travelled to Frankford to play Quinte West. Knowing that Quinte West had already advanced to the Finals with a win over Whitby, Napanee played a strong game,
never giving up, and continuing to press for the whole game. Quinte West scored twice in the first, and added two in the second. However, Carter McKee and Jake Wood would answer back ending the second 4-2. The third would see strong defensive play from Jack Madden along with goals from Aiden Haller-Brady and Carter McKee’s second of the game. Unfortunately,
the Stars lost 6-4, and were eliminated. n The novice Byron Perry Automotive Grays, recently crowned “A” Champions in Napanee, played Stirling in an exhibition house league game at the SPC last weekend in preparation for the Pizza Pizza Tournament in Whitby at the end of the month. Blake Dowling netted the winner on a setup by Nicholas Lamarche to gain a 1-0 shutout. The game featured effective defensive play by the team, and Cam Joyner was “The Wall” to secure the shutout between the pipes. At this level, a one-goal game is a rarity, but the boys showed what they have learned and how they have progressed this year, particularly in defensive zone coverage. The Byron Perry squad will host Stone Mills on Monday at 6 pm at the SPC.
came out strong and ready to battle. Back and forth action throughout the entire game resulted in a scoreless tie. Game 3 at the Strathcona Paper Centre Sunday March 22 at 2:00 p.m. n The Bantam Crunch are also involved in a four point series versus the

MEMORIAMS
In Memory of KALE DANIEL MURPHY
Kale, our memories are always clear, Your smile, your friendships, your caring ways Is all we have to carry us through these days. Although absent, you are forever near in our hearts, Life is going on but never the same, We wipe away the tears but not the memories. We love you and miss you. Lorraine, Don, Kate, Kristen, Kraig, Karla, Audrey, Colleen, Ken, Kendra, Kurtis, Pat Cam, Justin, Josh We rejoice in knowing that Nanny Murphy is with Kale.
MURPHY - In loving memory of our dear grandson, Kale Daniel, who passed away on March 23, 2006. We often sit and think of you When we are all alone, For memory is the only friend That grief can call its own, Like ivy on the weathered oak And other things decay our love, For you will still be green And never fade away. Love you and miss you. Nan and Pop Finn. SEXSMITH - In loving memory of mom, Gladys, who passed away March 21, 2008. You are with the angels now, It was time to say good-bye, Yet still it’s hard to hide the pain, No matter how we try, For you were such a special mom With lots of love to share And knowing you’re no longer here, Is very hard to bear And though the grief will pass And time will help heal the pain, Somehow life without you mom, Will never be the same. Deeply missed and forever always in our hearts. Your loving daughter and son-inlaw, Elizabeth and Eddie. VINE/MASKELL - In loving memory of a dear grandpa, Percy S. Vine, March 17, 1979 and a cherished mother, Elizabeth M. Maskell, March 27, 1961. “Always in our Hearts”.

Green Interiors Drawing inspiration from the spring and St. Patrick’s Day season Green occupies more space in the spectrum visible to the human eye than most colours, and is second only to blue as a favourite colour. Since St. Patrick’s Day is on everyone’s mind this week; I thought I would embrace the colour green in interiors. It’s also the unofficial start to spring. It would be nice to see all this snow and cold disappear. Green is the colour of growth, the colour of spring, or renewal and rebirth. Green is the pervasive colour in the natural world, making it an ideal backdrop in interior design because we are so used to seeing it everywhere. The natural greens, from forest to lime, are seen as tranquil and refreshing, with a natural balance of cool and warm (blue and green) undertones. Green is now considered to be a neutral that goes with everything. It was at one point considered a vibrant accent colour; it is now taking center stage in decorating colour palettes. Colour has an effect on us all; in the clothes we wear to our interiors. Green is: Rejuvenatingthe colour green revitalizes us when we are physically, mentally, or emotionally exhausted.
Dependable, agreeablethe colour green helps us to see situations clearly from all sides. Possessiveness- green is the colour that encourages us to want to own things and people, to collect and possess. Green encourages materialism.
Merola Tahamtan
Design Time Nurturing- because of its link with the heart, green urges us to nurture others. Green is also nurturing to us- another reason why it’s the most predominant colour on earth. To find the perfect shade of green, consider how you want to look and feel in that particular space. Each variety of green evokes a different mood. Think of the activi-
ties and how people will use that space to determine the right colour of green for you. Emerald Green- This is an inspiring and uplifting colour suggesting abundance and wealth in all its forms, from material wellbeing, to emotional wellbeing to creative ideas. Olive Green- The traditional colour for peace, the colour olive also has a strength of character with it that can overcome adversity to develop an understanding and caring of the feelings of others. Pale Green- As the colour of new growth on plants, it indicates immaturity, youthfulness and inexperience. It allows us to see things from a new perspective. Jade Green- The colour of trust and confidentiality, tact and diplomacy, jade green indicates a generosity of spirit, giving without expecting anything in return. It indicates worldly wisdom and understanding, assisting in the search for enlightenment. Lime Green- Lime green inspires youthfulness, naivety and playfulness; it is liked the most by younger people. It creates a feeling of anticipation, and helps to clear the mind of negativity. Grass Green- Grass green is the colour of
money. It is self-confident and secure, natural and healthy, occurring in abundance in nature. Aqua- Aqua calms the spirit, offering protection and healing for the emotions. So if green is the new neutral, what are the best colours to combine with it? The beauty of using the vast hues of green lie in its ability to easily juxtapose with almost any other colour in the colour wheel. Some classic green combinations include: Lime Green + Pink Sage Green + Silver Kelly Green + Navy + Crisp White Palm Green + Burnt Orange Pale Aqua + Raspberry The trick is not avoiding shades of green, but knowing how to use them properly and what to mix with them. To design a green interior may just be as simple as adding a few accent pieces or going all out with paint.
