Village reels following gun rampage Tamworth stunned after incident leaves two dead, two injured BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

AST Wednesday, the village of Tamworth experienced the unthinkable when a stunning chain of events led to the deaths of two men, and sent a man and woman to hospital with serious injuries. As for the rest of the community, it was left in shock and disbelief. “I grew up here and I’ve always felt safe in Tamworth and now that’s not the way I feel anymore,” said Angie Fowler, who owns the Grindstone Restaurant downtown and lives in Tamworth. Seventy-year-old Charles (McLeod) Thomas, of Erinsville, was found dead at his home. Morton Lewis, 59, died in an apparent suicide shortly after he is alleged to have rampaged through the village, viciously attacking one woman and shooting and injuring a local firefighter. “Call the police, McLeod’s been murdered,” is what Lewis shouted through a screen door at the Hannah Funeral Home around 5 p.m. last Wednesday, Brenda Hannah explained in an interview with The Beaver. She said her husband, Lindsey, was unable to unlock the door since the man was pulling on it from the other side. He had not yet

noticed that the man at the door was covered in blood. “Then he got in his red pickup truck and drove away,” said Brenda. After the interview, she closed the door saying, “I’m going to keep this door locked all the time now.” After that, Lewis is alleged to have driven to the village post office, threatening a postal worker and attacking a female motorist after colliding with her vehicle more than once. The woman was sent to hospital with a broken ankle. The man also shot a firefighter in the arm and drove his truck through the garage of a home. “It just shakes you, it shakes everything. I am definitely not as relaxed. And now I’m going to be second-guessing everybody, no matter who you are, which is sad,” said Fowler last Thursday. Fowler said she knew both of the deceased men. While Tamworth was crawling with police and reporters, Fowler could not bring herself to walk around the corner to the post office to see one of the scenes of crime for herself. “You see everybody around, and the reporters, but I still can’t believe it’s happened,” said Fowler. “I just drive home and I drive straight here to work.”

Protesters push for investigation

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Fowler normally works alone but was accompanied by her husband Thursday morning after the incident. “I’ve always been one that felt that I could take care of myself, but when someone’s got a gun, it doesn’t matter who you are. What are you going to do? I don’t feel safe anymore in our little village,” she said. But Fowler is confident the residents of Tamworth will be able to come together and help one another through this shocking event. “We’ll get through it as a community, like a couple of my friends said, ‘Tamworth is strong, we will all come together,’ but it sure has shaken a lot of us,” she said. Some Tamworth locals have turned to social media to show their support for the community. Shortly after the event, Shari Milligan proposed an event on Facebook that was shared and supported by Fowler and a number of other Tamworth locals. “Well folks, let’s start to heal our wonderful town! Next Wednesday, March 5 at 6 p.m (after public skating) anyone interested can meet at the arena and we’ll have a walk around the village,” the post read. The walk was designed to bring the community together to grieve and support each other together. Fowler said she knew Lewis and Thomas (McLeod) and said they were both friendly. After visiting with Thomas at her restaurant a few weeks ago, he said he would be back soon but she never saw him again. Thomas has been described as sickly and fragile by members of the community and was known to have lived in a barn in Erinsville after his house burned down. As for Lewis, some who knew him say he was “a nice man” and “don’t know why he snapped.” “He was a good man. I don’t know what happened to him. I’m not defending him and my heart goes out to the families. Why he snapped and the way he snapped, I don’t know,” said Tammy Wilson, a Tamworth resident who described Lewis as a family friend. “He wasn’t psycho. He was last (Wednesday) night, but not before that,” said Wilson. “He just went crazy. It doesn’t make sense to me.” The province’s Special Investigation Unit continues to investigate the incident.

Blockade organizers want inquiry into missing native women

Demanding an inquiry into unsolved missing and murdered First Nations women cases across Canada, about 80 Tyendinaga Mohawk protestors set up road blocks on Shannonville Road between Hinchey Road and Airport Parkway. Under heavy surveillance from the OPP and Tyendinaga Police Service, activists set up a teepee in the middle of the road early Monday morning. A second blockade was also set up on Shannonville Road on the north side of Hwy. 2. Citing public safety the OPP also closed a section of Wyman Road between Hwy 2 and Callaghan Road due to the presence of a few people on the side of the road sitting around a fire. The actions didn’t exactly come as a surprise as well known Mohawk activist Shawn Brant promised something would happen if the federal government made no indication of launching an inquiry by last Friday. “I think it’s been going really well,” Brant said of the protest on Tuesday. “We came in with a plan and we’ve been following that and its been working really well.” OPP Sgt. Kristine Rae has maintained from the start of the protest that police are aware of the situation and warned that anyone involved in criminal activity would be held accountable. She stated the OPP would use a “measured response that considers the safety of the public, protesters and the police.”

“We have a bit of a history together so we have a mutual understanding and respect,” Brant said of the OPP, who he says so far have just observed. “That allows us to get through situations like this. silence the past decade or so,” said Brant. “We want to create an environment and forum that would generate that discussion and allow for an opportunity for the families that have lost sisters, daughters and mothers to be able to come out with their stories and speak to that.” Brant says there’s no timetable for how long the blockade is planned to last, but says he wants it to be as short as possible. He says they aren’t handing out pamphlets as was first reported by the OPP, but they are willing to talk to any members of the community who are curious as to why they’re out there.

Brant says residents of the road are granted access to the road. “We don’t see failure as an option,” said Brant. “We see a national action plan and a government inquiry as the most minimum response that the government should be taking given the circumstances of 824 dead First Nation women.” Brant says the action stems from the Canadian government’s September decision not to launch an inquiry despite the fact the United Nations’ Human Rights Council and several First Nations groups urged the government to take action on the issue.

SPWC swamped with winter waterfowl Bad weather to blame for record number of swans and other birds being housed at shelter

Sue Meech said the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre has taken in more swans and waterfowl this winter than ever before, due to fluctuating temperatures and freezing waterways. Currently, there are approximately 25 swans at the SPWC and about 15 different types of birds – all crowding every corner of the limited space Meech and her employees and volunteers have to work in. “Usually in the winter we’d get maybe one or two phone calls a day for help and we’d get an average of one bird a day, but this year we’re up almost double our numbers because of the weather. All the animals and birds are in distress because of the really bad weather we’re having so we’re getting lots of calls. Last weekend I had 60 phone calls in one day from people all over asking for help,” said Meech, manager of the SPWC. With waterways freezing over, many birds are dying from dehydration. “The waterfowl that dive, they need open water to dive,” she said. “A lot of

waterfowl are all having the same problem: there’s not enough open water for them to dive and find food so we’re bringing them in here.” If an animal goes too long without food or water, Meech said it could be extremely difficult to nurse it back to health. “What happens when they’re starving, (is) they reach a certain point where their organs start to shut down and they don’t feel hungry anymore. So when we bring them in here they’re also dehydrated because they have no access to water. We have to rehydrate them and tube feed them until they’re feeling well enough to start eating on their own,” explained Meech. Swans and ducks are having the hardest time this winter, explained Meech. She currently has a number of types of ducks in her care, including Mergansers, Golden Eyes, Grebe, and Bufflehead, all waiting to be set free this spring when waterways unfreeze and the weather warms up. “At the moment, the Napanee River is about the only place around here with open water but we

have taken some to Gananoque. We take them wherever we think is best for them and where there are other birds of the same kind,” said Meech. “As soon as there’s open water we can release all of the swans and most of the ducks.” Meech encourages people to feed birds whole corn but if waterfowl are seen without open water, Meech said the SPWC should be contacted immediately. “It’s important, if they want to keep the birds alive, if there’s open water then feed the birds. Feed whole corn to ducks and geese and swans. If there is no open water then they need to come here. You can’t leave a bird in a parking lot and throw corn at it; it’s going to die of dehydration. It needs water. Open water is absolutely essential for these birds,” said Meech. Those seeking to help the SPWC can donate whole corn or small pools for the birds. Strength in community In all our lives, we receive blows that, especially at the time, seem like they will be impossible to bounce back from. The entire community of Tamworth received one of those blows just over a week ago. We doubt anyone could have predicted that a man, obviously but as yet inexplicably unhinged, would rampage through the village last Wednesday afternoon, leaving a trail of death, heartbreak and unanswered questions in his wake. Now, however, two are dead (including the suspected shooter in this case), and two more are in the process of recovering. The community, meanwhile, is grappling with those unanswered questions — including whether or not that quiet rural community will ever be the same again. It’s natural to ask those difficult questions following a tragedy like this one. Some of those questions — like, what would possess a seemingly peaceful man to take the actions he did last Wednesday? — might not ever get satisfactory answers. Another tough question: what can be done to predict and prevent a similar act from taking place in Tamworth or anywhere else? Small, rural villages like Tamworth, however, are wonderful places, and one of the wonderful characteristics of communities like Tamworth is their ability to bounce back. That process of recovery has indeed started — in fact, it started before the day was out last Wednesday. Already, the community is holding various events to demonstrate its resolve and to put this sad chapter behind it. Last night, a special community walk around the village was planned to help residents to confront the impact of the event and to push past it. The community is rallying to help those directly involved in last Wednesday’s bizarre attacks. In other words, Tamworth is doing what small, tight-knit communities do in terrible but thankfully rare circumstances like this: it’s coming together. So while there are many unanswered questions in the wake of last Wednesday’s events, there’s one question — ‘can Tamworth recover from this’? — we have no problem in answering. The answer, of course, is ‘yes.’

The folly of fracking Typically, 5,000,000 gallons of water, mixed with fracking chemicals and sand are required per well per frack; a fracking drill pad typically has 12 wells. 50-90 per cent of the contaminated water is lost during fracking — left behind in the strata. The flowback water and the produced water are often disposed of by injection into deep waste disposal wells or processed in local sewage treatment plants ill equipped to handle waste water from fracking. Fracking products contain: acids, bactericides, corrosion inhibitors, friction reducers, gelling agents, iron controllers, scale inhibitors and surfactants. The U.S. House of Representatives surveyed 14 fracking companies and found the most common constituents in fracking chemical mixtures, apart from sand, were (in order of frequency of use) methanol, isopropanol, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylene glycol (antifreeze), hydrotreated light petroleum distillates and sodium hydroxide (caustic soda).

FRACKING FROM PAGE 6 Methanol, the most common fracking chemical, is considered a cumulative poison with chronic exposure. Other chemicals in use are diesel, napththalene, xylene, hydrogen chloride, toluene, ethyl benzene and benzene, which is a known human carcinogen. The oil and gas service companies surveyed used hydraulic fracturing products containing 29 chemicals that are (1) known or possible human carcinogens, (2) regulated under the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act for their risks to human health, or (3) listed as hazardous air pollutants under the (US) Clean Air Act. These 29 chemicals were components of 652 different products used in hydraulic fracturing. The produced waters or brines, far saltier than seawater, often contain radioactive elements such as strontium and radium. A 2011 United States Geological Survey study found radioactivity in shale wastewater in Pennsylvania 350 times the drinking water standard set by the (US) Environmental Protection Agency. Most disposal wells and treatment plants are not equipped to deal with radioactive waste. Ideally the recovered methane is all collected and piped away to market. Unfortunately there is evidence that the methane can migrate up through the strata to the water bearing layers or along the well casing when the well has not been properly cemented. Methane, an asphyxiant, entering the ground water becomes an explosive hazard to those consuming the water and the well operators. Wells have been known to blow out. Home owners have been able to light a flame at their household taps. Methane reaching the atmosphere has a global warming potential 72 times that of carbon dioxide. In addition to methane entering the air near drill sites, elevated levels of disulfides, benzene, xylenes and naphthalenes have been detected in air samples. People living near shale gas drilling sites often complain of headaches, diarrhea, nosebleeds, dizziness, blackouts, muscle spasms, and other problems. At the drill pad the concentration of diesel powered pumps and trucks has contributed to high nitrogen oxide concentrations which promote the formation of poisonous ozone. This leads to photochemical smog. Even very low concentrations of ozone can cause permanent damage to the upper respiratory tract and the lungs. Please urge your municipal, provincial and federal representatives to ban fracking in Ontario. The environmental risks are just too great. Stephen R. Knowles, P. Eng. (Ret.), Yarker

The waning power of Oprah When Oprah originally began promoting books in the early 1990s, any title she mentioned would become an instantaneous bestseller — but does Oprah still have as much influence over the reading public as she did in the past? Oprah re-launched her book club as Book Club 2.0 in June of 2012 with Cheryl Strayed's memoir Wild; she had put a halt to her original book club a year before. Once a powerhouse in terms of driving book sales and library holds, Oprah’s book club had been steadily losing steam. After a few years of flocking to whatever books Oprah was hocking, fans began to realize that just because a book appealed to Oprah, didn’t necessarily mean it would appeal to them. Oprah tends to enjoy literary fiction, specifically books in which the protagonist (usually female, often a minority) must overcome some very tough obstacles. Past OBC choices have favored authors like Wally Lamb, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Toni Morrison. No doubt that these are great authors, but they are also pretty dark and dense examples of

Catherine Coles Coles’ Notes fiction — and they are certainly not for everyone. The problem that arose here was that plenty of the people so keen to jump on the commercial OBC bandwagon in the first place were individuals who wouldn’t have previously considered themselves to be passionate readers. Consequently, when your first foray into pleasure reading is overwhelming and not at all pleasurable, you may be turned off of it all together. This was surely the opposite of Oprah’s intention. While I believe Oprah should be applauded for celebrating reading and being so open about the books she loves, she needs to consider her audience. If she is choosing a book to be read by millions of people, the book ought to have mass appeal and must not be as high on the Lexile reading level scale as say, One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Apparently her brief book club hiatus worked wonders: Wild was a huge bestseller. Oprah is also taking her time between launching book club selections (a bit of scarcity so often does the trick) and she has been choosing books that lean more towards the commercial/women’s fiction end of the literary spectrum. Her latest choice The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd, author of The Secret Life of Bees, is a good example. Filled with strong female characters, this is a story that “gives us a new perspective on slavery, injustice and the search for freedom”. It currently has well over four stars on Goodreads.com, which is a good indicator of how well the book has been received by the general reading public. It seems like Oprah is back on track to recovering her book club following. You can reserve The Invention of Wings at your branch of the County of L&A Libraries. A column about those bird brains It is still quite dark when I top up the feeders outside in preparation for the feathered breakfast brigade. Incredibly, at this early hour, there are tiny, dark figures moving about on the ground. In the darkness, there are tree sparrows and even a few mourning doves groping about in the dark for leftovers. Although sunrise is a long way off, apparently I am late again serving up their breakfast. The tree sparrows are not only the first to arrive at our feeders in the morning, they are among the very last to leave the feeders at night. In the sub-Arctic tundra, where these birds typically nest, this is an important attribute, as they have evolved to take advantage of every precious fragment of light they can find. The mourning doves come early too, but it is the tree sparrows that amaze me the most as they grope about on the ground in total darkness for anything they can find. Did they have any problems with the extreme cold we experienced a few weeks ago? Not in the least. Provided they could find food, tree sparrows, and everything else out there seemed to make out okay. Not so with waterfowl, but that’s another story. There was an excellent wild food crop out there this winter. What about their feet? Well, most birds have thermostats in their legs which control circulation to their feet, allowing only a minimum of circulation to pre-

vent freezing, thus conserving precious heat and directing it to other parts of the body where it is needed more. Others admittedly do have problems. Some just can’t seem to get the hang of winter living. While we tend to think of mourning doves as a winter fixture in the Quinte area anymore, it wasn’t always that way. The presence of mourning doves here in the winter has become a common thing only in the last 50 years or so as they are tempted from migrating by an abundance of food, such as unharvested corn fields, and to a certain extent, a plethora of bird feeders in the province. However, mourning doves simply aren’t built for our winters, often suffering from frost damage to their feet. Over 30 per cent of wintering doves in Ontario suffer from this problem in the province. It is not unusual to see doves with toes badly curled, or lacking toes altogether! However, while they experience some problem landing on branches, the toeless birds appear to have little problem walking about on the ground. Give them another hundred years or so, and they will get it right. For the most part though, birds are well adapted to coming through frigid temperatures in fine shape. Some of those that arrive from the far north are darker in colour for darker colours absorb heat. Remember your physics lessons? It has to do

Outdoor Rambles with the different wavelengths of light. All light that is not reflected is absorbed. Because light causes heat, dark colors, which absorb more light than lighter colors, are warmer than lighter colors. Does this explain why blue jays at our feeders in winter - suspected migrants from farther north - appear darker? Perhaps so, but bird banders who have an intimate understanding of bird plumage, say there is nothing to that theory. Blue jays are blue jays, and some are darker than others and some are lighter and has nothing to do with where they are from, so we still don’t know the origin of our winter blue jays. Are they local blue jays that didn’t migrate south, or are they visitants from further north that consider the Quinte Region as their Florida? Perhaps a combination of both. However, purple martin houses

in summer are painted white to reflect heat. Birds in the north also have shorter extremities to prevent heat from leaking out. Look at the short stubby beak of the redpoll when they appear again some winter, compared to the beaks of other seed eating birds, more common to the Quinte area. When the temperature drops, birds can increase their insulation by fluffing their feathers to increase the layer of warmer trapped air between the feathers and their bodies. We saw enough of that happening this winter. That is why bird baths are particularly busy in the winter, because birds know they must keep these feathers meticulously clean and lovingly preened to protect the insulating properties. But for birds to function, they must have an adequate supply of fuel to stoke their tiny furnaces. Cold weather burns a lot of fuel, so birds tend to be more active during sub-zero temperatures. Our feeders reflect this, busier on cold days, but the tempo slowing during periods of mild weather. Other than a few here and there, redpolls were not present this winter. The birch, alder and conifer seed crop where these redpolls nest was excellent. So, they stayed put this winter. Why expend energy migrating when there’s no need for it. But, they are a miracle in engineering. During those few precious daylight hours in the north, redpolls

can eat voraciously and store excess seeds into a sort of false crop - its diverticula, if you want the technical term. When darkness falls, they retire to a secluded and protected spot out of the wind, and consume the seeds at their leisure. Think of it as a cow bringing up its cud, and chewing contently. They have other adaptations too, including longer winter feathers than most birds their size, and a heavier coat. They also can burrow in the snow, huddling together in the snow shelter to reduce heat loss. Amazing little critters. The reason we very seldom see gray jays this far south is due to their amazing ability to survive in the cold extremes of Algonquin Park by caching their food in crevices, something they start doing very early in the season. Thousands of tiny crevices are utilized in the forest, and every gray jay remembers each and every one of them, weeks later. Always food around, if you are a gray jay. So, the next time someone refers to you as a “birdbrain,” run right over and give them a big hug as a sign of gratitude. You have just been paid one of the highest compliments! A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 50 Years Ago March 6, 1964 n Napanee’s town council voted to start Daylights Saving Time on April 26 through Oct. 25. n Accepting a motion put forth by councillor Lorne Smart, town council agreed to hold a contest to determine a name for a new park on the corner of Water Street and Mill Street, located on the banks of the Napanee River. Coupons were placed in the local paper and citizens were asked to submit their suggestions.. n High winds in the area kept Hydro crews busy as up to 40 poles were damaged in the storm. n Napanee’s Chamber of Commerce targeted new industries as their goal for 1964. They planned to work with town council to promote new industries and improve relations with the current ones. n Ontario Ministry of Transportation announced two new service stations would be built on Hwy 401 just east and west of Odessa.

35 Years Ago March 6, 1979 n After 21 years on the job Napanee Fire Chief Pat Patton retired. He was responsible for organizing the fire services agreement between Richmond and North Fredericksburgh Townships. He also encouraged local elementary students to tour the fire hall. n Kevin Arsenault was acclaimed as the Hastings-Frontenac New Democratic Party for the upcoming federal election. n Napanee and District Curling Club’s Sally Lambert and Marj Pearce reached the Division 4 Tankard finals, advancing with wins in Whitby. n NDSS’ Golden Hawk girls volleyball team reached the Central Ontario finals, losing to a team from Madoc. n Former Olympic runner Abbie Hoffman dropped by the Prince Charles Public School to serve as a guest speaker. She encouraged both children and adults to get more active. n The county school board decided to continue their alcohol free policy for any events held at any of their schools. The issue sparked a lively debate as some members of the board had hoped to change the policy that forbid the sale of alcohol during any social events held inside a school building.

Special to the Beaver Editor’s Note: This is the third of an ongoing series provided by L&A County to mark the municipality’s 150th anniversary. This article focusses on Augustus Frederick Garland Hooper, 1815-1866. Augustus Hooper, a wellknown merchant and politician, was born in Devonshire, England in 1815 and came to Canada in 1819. He was educated at the public school and seminary of the City of Quebec and, when he grew up, was engaged for a number of years in a lumbering firm. In 1843 he set out for Canada West and established himself in mercantile business at the village of Newburgh in partnership with his brother Douglas, under the firm name of A. & D. Hooper. In about 1850 he built the old stone Hooper residence at Camden East and branched out in the lumbering business, which he followed until his death. In 1860 Hooper was elected warden of the then United Counties of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington. In 1861 he also served one term as representative for the area for the old Parliament of Canada, and was in turn defeated by Sir Richard Cartwright in 1863. Being an Addington man and closely associated with the business interests of Newburgh, he quite naturally upheld the claims of that village for the county seat, while Cartwright, who was deeply interested in Napanee, supported the latter village. The local question of the separation of the counties and the choice of the county town overshadowed all other issues and turned the scale in Cartwright’s favour. Salvation Army to host tea party fundraiser

The Napanee Salvation Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basement will have a royal British feel to it on March 15 as it plays host to its first ever Tea Party Fundraiser. For $10 guests in their best formal wear will enjoy an afternoon tea, snacks and entertainment provided by country singer Lisa Hart, followed by gospel music. Money raised from the event will be split between the Salvation Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Friends Club after school program and its upcoming summer camp program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We thought for March Break it might be a good idea to do something where moms, daughters, grandmothers or aunts can come out for an afternoon tea,â&#x20AC;? said Salvation Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dana Henry. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They also have an opportunity to get a picture taken by a professional photographer who is donating her time.â&#x20AC;? Studio 56 will be on hand to snap portraits of the guests, if they so choose. Space is limited for the

event, which runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. To reserve tickets call Henry at 613354-7633. The Salvation Army Community Church is located at 82 Richard St. And though it feels like anything but summer outside, Henry is accepting registrations for the Outdoor Adventure Camp which runs July 21 to 26. The cost is $245 per child with subsidies available for those who qualify. Open to kids six to 16, the camp will include swimming, hiking, singing and all of the other summer camp staples with a religious theme. Kids in the six to 10 age group will spend the week at Jacksonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Point Camp, which is north of Newmarket. The 11- to 16- year-olds will head to Newport Adventure Camp in Muskoka. Transportation is included in the cost of the camp, parents need only drop their kids off at the Salvation Army Church. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Napanee Relay for Life will take place on Friday, June 13, and the theme will be just that: Friday the 13th. The announcement was made at a Relay for Life launching celebration on the weekend, where this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ambassador was also announced: six-year-old Leyla Parks, who battled cancer at the fragile age of one. Relay for Life co-chair Michelle Way said Leyla brings energy and youth to Relay. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our Survivor Chair chose Leyla Parks because sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so happy and rambunctious and the family and everyone involved was just so happy and gracious to be at Relay,â&#x20AC;? explained Way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As of this June, it will mark five years since Leyla was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. It also marks one year since we found out that the cancer is now dormant, or sleeping. And to top it off, Leyla just had her six-month visit and does not have to return to the cancer clinic for another year,â&#x20AC;? said Leylaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s godmother, Crystal Barkley, at the event on the weekend. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When asked if Leyla would be this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ambassador, I was filled with emotion. This week I’ll describe some of the closing costs you might expect and also report on benefits that exist by way of government programs that may help in offsetting some of those costs. Expectations Prior to Closing and Closing Costs My goal is to find the best mortgage options for my Clients. Buying a house is exciting. But can’t be all fun and games. Down payment aside, there are other considerations and closing costs when buying a home the new home buyer should be aware of. So what are they? Things to consider: • Down Payment of course which can be as low as 5% from your own funds or can be a gift. For example a $200,000 mortgage would require a $10,000 down payment. • Deposit is required once you submit your offer to purchase a home. Your Real Estate agent will help you determine this amount. • Mortgage Loan Insurance is required if your down pay-

ment is less than 20%. I can help you determine the insurance premium or you can visit www.cmhc.com. This premium is added to the mortgage. • Home Inspection assesses the condition of the home you are buying and chosen at your discretion and cost. • Title Insurance is a one-time cost and your lawyer or notary can help you decide whether to purchase or not. Some Lenders insist you have it. It will be included in your final legal fees. • Legal fees can vary. You will need a lawyer experienced in Real Estate transactions to represent you. Suggest asking family, friends for a referral. I can also provide you with a referral. • Property insurance covers any number of loss types or damage to your property. Hawks dethroned as KASSAA girls hockey champions HC bests NDSS 3-1 in Kingston

NDSS’ trophy case will seem a bit barren this year as for the first time since 2010 the KASSAA girls hockey championship trophy will be housed inside a different high school. That school will be Holy Cross as the Crusaders finally bested their NDSS Golden Hawks rivals with a 3-1 victory on Friday at the Invista Centre. Holy Cross jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead and maintained it throughout the opening period. They doubled it early in the second. Napanee was able to get a foothold in the game when they were granted a 5-on-3 power-play midway through the second. Brianna Gaffney made good use of the opportunity, scoring Napanee’s lone goal of the game. NDSS continued to press throughout the game and never allowed the Crusaders to get completely comfortable, but still couldn’t solve Crusader goalie Jensen Murphy. The Crusaders added a crucial insurance marker in the third. Despite the loss Izzy McDonald turned in a solid

Since the playoffs have begun however they’ve shown they belong, making quick work of the Panthers. These two clubs met in the 2013 playoffs, with Picton sweeping the Jets in the first round en route to their first ever Schmalz Cup. Game 1 of the 2014 Empire B League finals will begin tonight with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop at the Prince Edward County Community Centre. The rest of the series’ games are yet to be determined.

Many of the team’s top players graduated following the cancelled 2013 season, leaving many unproven players to fill their roles. Rather than experience growing pains, they continued to thrive and carry on the NDSS tradition of fielding a competitive girls hockey team. “Some of them have never played in a KASSAA final,” Campeau said of his team. “We’ve got some kids that have been here four years and we’ve got four Grade 9s on our team. Hopefully they got a taste and will want to come back.” Napanee had hoped to play as the home team in Tuesday’s EOSSAA meeting with Thousand Islands Secondary School, held at the Strathcona Paper Centre, but instead that privilege when to Holy Cross. It was a similar story on the boys’ side for Napanee, as the Crusaders ended their run as well, only one round earlier. The Golden Hawks met the Crusaders in the KASSAA semifinals last Wednesday, losing 7-1. Holy Cross went on to shutout La Salle 2-0 in the KASSAA finals, also played last Friday at the Invista Centre.

Peewee B Crunch’s run comes to an end Beaver Sports

The Napanee Peewee B Crunch played two games over the weekend. On Saturday, the Crunch travelled to Whitby for Game 2 of their second round LLFHL playoff series against the Wolves. Trailing the series 1-0, the girls needed a victory to stay alive in the series. A hard fought game remained tied 0-0 heading into the third period when Whitby connected on a pair of goals to end the series for the Crunch. On Sunday, the Crunch hosted the Kemptville Storm in their final Provincial Playdowns game. The Storm proved to be too much for the girls as the game ended in a 3-0 defeat for the Crunch. The two losses puts an end to the

The Cobourg Cougars came out hard from the drop of the puck, and scoring first, 49 seconds into the game. Despite having the majority of the scoring chances - the Stars struggled to find their game early in the first, but managed to tie the game late in the period. The Stars dug deep, and found a way to get it done- scoring three times in the third period for the 4-1 win. Scoring for the Stars were Cranley (two), Uens and Will Myers. Napanee District Minor Hockey Year End Championships In House League action, Napanee District Minor Hockey held its annual end of year party this past week starting Friday with a very exciting atom semi final game. The Progressive Waste Solutions/Atomc Green team enjoyed a one goal lead thanks to Justin Lloyd until Bryan Christie, of the Calderwood Automation Inc/Atomc Black team tied it up late in the third period. Christie quickly gave Calderwood the lead with a second goal. Ryan Scilley tied it back up with less than five minutes left. At 2:59, Liam Swart scored the winner, sending the Progressive Waste Solutions/Atomc Green team to the A Championship on Saturday. Saturday morning championships began with Matthew Lougheed scoring a hat trick to lead the Byron Perry Grey Stars to victory over the Kennelly Heating & Air Conditioning Red Stars in the Novice B Championship game. Carter Street, of the Strathcona Paper Yellow Stars, scored the winning goal in the third period to upset the early lead of the Boyer Blue Stars and capture the Novice A Championship title.

Outgoing missionaries reflect on time in Napanee BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Town of Greater Napanee staff, the Napanee Business Improvement Area, and a number of other organizations have been working to improve downtown to make Napanee more appealing to an outsider. But is it working? Two missionaries from the United States have been in Napanee for eight months and reflected on their time here in an interview with The Beaver. Sister Ester, from Arizona, and Sister Sears, from Utah, both from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, said the beautiful waterfront trail, flowers and greenery, and unique buildings are some of their favourite aspects in Napanee. “When you get in the country it’s really nice. I’m from Arizona, I’m from the desert, but in the country here I love the green and the colours. I would say it’s the most beautiful area I’ve served in; with the river and everything, it’s great,” said Sears. In the winter, Sears experienced her very first Santa Claus parade and thoroughly enjoyed watching Napanee glow during the Big Bright Lights Show. However, both agree what they’ll miss most about Napanee are the people.

“There are amazing people here. You can see so much potential, it’s amazing. And Napanee is really beautiful. We’ve been here through summer, fall and winter now and it’s beautiful,” said Sears. “We love Napanee, we really do. When we first got here, it was a little bit harder for us because it’s so small and we had to go talk to lots of people we don’t know, but the longer we stayed here the more we love Napanee,” said Ester. From shoveling snow off downtown sidewalks to helping those in need, Ester and Sears have had the opportunity to experience Napanee in a number of ways. “I feel like the world slows down in Napanee. In the city it’s so rushed but here people have the time of day where they will actually talk to people,” said Sears, explaining the slower paced environment has been a nice change for her. “My entire life, I’ve always lived in cities. When I would travel I would go to big cities and I’ve spent a lot of time in big cities. I was kind of freaked out when I first came to Napanee because there are 15,000 in the area and I’ve never been somewhere so small. My university has more people than this. But I love it. I love everything about it,” said Sears.

Pair of local rinks take Town and County draws Club’s closing ‘spiel fast approaching BY SANDY EASTLAKE On the Button

he annual Town & Country Bonspiel last Wednesday showed 64 curlers from near and far great ice and great fun thanks to convenor Jack McNamee and his committee of Hugh Sharpe and Robert Hough. Two Napanee rinks were fortunate to win both the first and second draw prizes so congratulations to Don Currier, Frank Dunham, Jim Stapley, Chris Goody and Chris Ramshaw, Tom Miller and Darrell Pritchard. Kitchen captain Sandi McNamee with Marilyn Cole, Jane Hough, Stacey Jones, Jo Sutton and Robin Stockfish served up a delicious lunch while Tom Ayling, Darrell Pritchard and McNamee kept everyone’s thirsts satisfied. While not curling the four members of Currier’s team were responsible for the terrific fast ice. Prior to prize presentations the convenor thanked all his sponsors for their kind

donations starting with Clow Farm Equipment, O’Neills Farm Supply, Waste Management, L&A Mutual, Moore Bros. NDCC's team of Bryce Rowe, Ryan Rowe, Rob Dickson and Scott Dickson won the B side of the OCA Colt Regionals and will now advance to provincials. Those will be held March 12-15 at the Chatham Granite Curling Club. Four club teams curled at the Senior Men’s Bonspiel at the Quinte Curling Club last weekend with some making it to the prize table. Congratulations to Frank Dunham, Andy Palmer, Darrell Pritchard and John Ryan on your third place finish; Walter Genereax and team tied for eighth while the teams of Ed File and Hugh Sharpe had a great day of good food and camaraderie. I have been writing a lot about our men’s successes but nothing about our ladies so please remember to let me know when you venture out for a Bonspiel. There’s no doubt that Don Currier, Jim Stapley and Steve Eastlake will all be cringing or maybe shedding a tear or two as they watch skaters end the evening right after the famous turkey and ham toss junior fundraising event. This closing funspiel is open to all so curlers may sign up as a team (please list all four players) or as an individual (just put a name in the position they’d would like to play is all that is needed.) Thank you to Paul McDonald, Barry Brummell, John Stimpson and Bill Ryan for staffing the bar during the rental last weekend. The banquet this year is set for Friday, April 25 and tickets are available from your league directors.

District Skating Club’s annual Carnival, held March 30 at the SPC. The year end show, which features more than 100 skaters from the club’s various levels and programs, will have a decided-

who is in charge of this year’s show. “It will focus on the different kinds of music that Canada has to offer.” All 10 provinces and the territories will have a number dedicated to them while skaters perform a routine that pays homage to their culture. “They’re all using Canadian music by Canadian artists,” said McKinney. “We’re trying to have a comedic approach and have it be fun and entertaining.” As with all Carnivals, a portion of the show will feature a ‘farewell’ skate for members of the club who are graduating from the program. This year’s graduating group is made up of Anna McKinney, Shannon McKinney and Alex Israel. As part of their farewell skate, the McKinneys are choreographing a special number that will honour the many volunteers that make up Greater Napanee. “Our community is like a tightly-knit family,” said Shannon McKinney. “They’ve had a big influence on our lives.” “One of the cool things about this routine is that each skater gets to nominate someone in the community to be recognized as the number is going on,” added Anna McKinney. Neither of the girls have ever put together a

More planets found beyond our solar system Local astronomer says search for ‘exoplanets’ is part of rapidly-expanding field of science

ews last week that NASA had confirmed the existence of some 715 new planets outside our solar system is causing a buzz both inside

and outside scientific circles. “This is certainly one (field of astronomy) that’s of interest to the public because it’s a tangible thing,” says SkyNews editor and Yarker-based astronomy writer Terence Dickinson.

The latest announcement comes following the analysis of the latest batch of data provided by the Kepler spacecraft, which over the course of its twoyear lifespan managed to find 3,500 exoplanet ‘candidates’. Dickinson said last week’s revelation repre-

sents about half the data provided by Kepler, and that there will undoubtedly be more confirmed exoplanets revealed after Kepler’s remaining data is analyzed. Dickinson notes that it was only 19 years ago that the first planet outside the solar system was discovered. “The field has just exploded… it’s probably the hottest field in astronomy,” he said. With the discovery of more exoplanets — many of which are between the size of Earth and Neptune — comes the tantalizing possibility that some of those worlds could harbour life, and possibly intelligent life. Dickinson acknowledges

that excitement, but adds that it will be a long time before we can determine, for certain, that life exists outside of our solar system. The first step, he says, will be to find worlds that are close in characteristics to Earth — close in size, and close in distance to the sun. Then, scientists will also have to determine the atmospheric makeup of those planets, and look for signatures of life as we know it. The alternative, he says, would be to send a robotic probe from Earth, but given the large distances involved, it could take several decades to reach an exoplanet. Dickinson predicts that the answer to the funda-

mental question, ‘Are we alone?’, won’t come until the 22nd Century. “It’s going to drive us far into the future, asking the same question,” he said. Regardless of how the search for exoplanets and extraterrestrial life proceeds, the Kepler spacecraft won’t be part of the process. An equipment failure about two years into its projected four-year lifespan effectively ended Kepler’s mission. Dickinson said that both NASA and the European Space Agency have plans to launch similar spacecraft in the nottoo-distant future; meanwhile, ground-based telescopes will continue the search for exoplanets.

L&A SOS puts call out for drivers Volunteers needed to help take seniors to appointments

Lennox and Addington Seniors Outreach Services is looking for more volunteer drivers to transport seniors to and from appointments, as well provide company while they wait to see the doctor. “The program is a service provided for seniors to get to medical appointments,” said Tammy Webster, SOS transportation coordinator. She said the program has been very successful for years, providing about 300 rides for seniors each month. Webster oversees 41 drivers but said there is still a shortage, especially in the Loyalist area. “It used to be Monday to Friday but now it’s branching into Saturdays and Sundays because hospitals are providing clinics and MRI services 24/7,” said

Webster, explaining why more volunteers are needed. “We go as far as Amherstview and Loyalist. That’s where our need is right now,” she said. Odessa and Bath are areas also in need of volunteer drivers. Drivers help seniors in and out of the vehicle and also bring any walkers or wheelchairs required. “This program has been a saving grace for many people. As the transportation coordinator I enjoy each day hearing the positive feedback from clients and drivers each and every day. This service not only meets the needs of the clients themselves, but also benefits the volunteer drivers by giving them a very good feeling about what they are doing for the community,” explained Webster in a press release. One driver said volunteering as a driver has been a great way for him to spend

his retirement. “When you retire, you have two choices for your future lifestyle. No. 1: you can pack it all in and become a couch potato… or No. 2: you can get acquainted with Seniors Outreach in Napanee and never look back,” he explained. “Now I am driving people wherever, managing reception desks, delivering hot meals and anything else they might ask. And you know what — I love it.” Clients have said it is an affordable, reliable and supportive mode of transportation on top of the fact that

clients enjoy the company of a volunteer driver. “Social isolation is a common dilemma for people such as I,” one client explained. “The drivers offer conversation for those wishing to converse, or silence if that is what is desired.
