Local MP backs new assisted-dying bill BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

Local MP Mike Bossio says he’ll be voting in favour of legislation put forward by the Liberal government surrounding doctor-assisted dying. The Liberal representative for Hastings-Lennox and Addington says that while he has received plenty of feedback from con-

Absolutely. I think in the long run, there are

L&A County selects warden Addington Highlands Reeve Henry Hogg acclaimed BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

In a rare mid-term inaugural meeting last Wednesday night, Lennox and Addington County council chose a new warden for the remainder of 2016. Henry Hogg, the reeve of Addington Highlands and a previous three-time warden of the county, was acclaimed as the new warden. He fills the vacancy left by previous warden Clarence Kennedy, the former reeve of Stone Mills Township, who passed away in March after a brief battle with cancer. Kennedy had only been in office for about four months at the time of his death. Greater Napanee Mayor Gord Schermerhorn — who had filled in as acting warden following Kennedy’s death — placed the chain of

office on Hogg after his selection. “I was thinking of Clarence and how he couldn’t be here to perform this duty this evening, so it’s a great honour to represent Clarence and the County of Lennox and Addington in putting the chain on Councillor Hogg,” he said. After his swearing in, Hogg said he appreciated the support given to him by his fellow county councillors. “I’m looking forward to working with everyone on county council towards our strategic objectives that we set last fall,” Hogg added. The county warden chairs all regular county council meetings and working sessions. The warden also participates in regular meetings of the Eastern Ontario Wardens Caucus, a regional body that tackles common problems across municipalities within the district.

The selection of a new warden wasn’t the only piece of business to be handled at the special meeting. John Wise, the new deputy-reeve of Stone Mills Township, was sworn in as a member of county council, allowing him to participate in the selection of a new warden. The previous deputyreeve, Eric Smith, was appointed by Stone Mills council last month to fill the vacancy left by Kennedy. Hogg’s municipal service began in 1985 when he was first elected as a councillor in the Township of Denbigh, Abinger and Ashby. In 1989 he was elected reeve of the Township, a position he held until 1994. Warden Hogg was elected reeve of the newly restructured Township of Addington Highlands in 1998 and subsequently in 2000, 2006, 2010 and 2014.

The proposed legislation put forward by the government would put strict limits on who can avail themselves of doctor-assisted death to those “suffering intolerably” and where death is “reasonably foreseeable.” The right to die does not include minors, or allow for individuals who wish to provide advance consent. Further, there would be a mandatory 15-day “reflection period” before the service can be provided. Bossio admitted that it was a difficult issue to consider, for himself and his fellow MPs. “It is tough. It really is. Myself, I really wrestled with it, for the longest time. I really do feel that it is between a person and God as to how they decide, it’s not up to me to judge that, but at the same time, you have to protect those who are vulnerable,” he said. “Where I really struggled — and this is where we struggled period — is with mental health,” he continued. “Depression and other

areas of mental health are another aspect; in trying to clearly define as to the boundaries, where you feel that it’s right for an individual or someone is in the right mental capacity to make that decision, (it’s) a dilemma. It really is. If someone is suffering from a mental-health issue, how do you know that they’re in the right frame of mind or have the mental capacity to make that decision in the first place, when you already know that they’ve got a mental health issue?” One area that Bossio says he believes will eventually be reconsidered will be the concept of having an individual express a desire, in advance, to end their life before a disease or condition can render them incapacitated and incapable of expressing their wishes. “Would I like to see, eventually, the ‘advanced directive’ to be part of the legislation? Yes, I would,” he said. “I have heard from a lot of people that they would like the option, that if they have Alzheimers… or ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclero-

Aaron Cassidy is taking his collision repair skills to Moncton, N.B. next month, where he’ll compete against students from across the country in the Canadian National Skills Competition. Cassidy, a Grade 12 student at NDSS, qualified for nationals after winning gold at the Limestone area level, which was held in Napanee, followed by gold at the provincial level earlier this month in Waterloo. The competition involves students demonstration a variety of trade skills for a panel of judges. In Cassidy’s case, he was competing in the auto body collision repair division. “I had to cut out and replace the rear quarter panel on a newer Toyota Corolla,” Cassidy said of what the provincial competition entailed. He then had to do a plas-

like to go there, it’d be really cool,” added Cassidy. This marked the second year Cassidy has competed in the Skills Competition and first time he has advanced to the national level. He owes much of what he knows from taking Craig Sindall’s auto body focus class where he has spent many hours practicing his craft in the school’s class room garage. “Before I was in this class I knew nothing (about auto repair),” said Cassidy. “Sindall has taught me pretty well everything I know. What he hasn’t taught me I’ve figured out from practice.” A lot has changed since he first took the course, as he now sees it collision repair as a potential career. “I’m going to school next year for welding and I’m going to focus on that,” said Cassidy. “But after retirement and as a side type of thing I’d like to do collision repair stuff.”

tic bumper repair, then measure a unibody to make sure it was within factory measurements. “If they’re out one way you can tell if it’s been in an accident,” he said. Heading into provincials he had a general idea of what his challenge would be only because he had competed the previous year. Typically, the students aren’t given much of a heads up as to what their specific challenge will be, just that it will involve things that showcase their particular skills. For the national competition, however, he has been given a package that provides a few more details as to what he’ll have to do, which allows him to focus on a more particular skill when practicing. Nationals will take place June 3-8 in New Brunswick. Should he place first there, he’ll earn a spot in the Worlds, which will be held in Saudi Arabia. “I’d

Familiar face returns for local performance Napanee’s Kim Pollard to take stage at next ‘Live at the Museum’ series next Thursday

BY ASHLEY ESPINOZA Staff Reporter

Local blues and jazz performer Kim Pollard is set to take the stage next Thursday for the next installment of the Live at the Museum series. The Napanee-based artist’s music has become widely known, especially between the Toronto and Ottawa areas. She has been heard singing the national anthem for Maple Leaf games and has won Canadian Female Jazz Vocalist of the year, among a number of other awards and accomplishments. Currently, she is working on new music with her bandmates and

hopes to work toward a new album. “We haven’t got the studio booked but the talk was that if we get enough music then we’ll do a CD and that would be really cool, I think. This one is different because in the past, all the song I’ve written, but for these I’ve collaborated with the guys. They’ve got some of their own input as well, which is fun,” said Pollard. She said members of her band “shot off some music” to her and then they all worked together to “build from there.” She said she would be performing some of her newer music in Napanee later this summer. Pollard performs at the Lennox and Addington

County Museum next Thursday. She said it will be the first time she will have been to the new museum and she’s looking forward to performing in the small setting. “I’m kind of looking forward to the intimacy of it. I like to have a nice, small crowd to talk to and to sing to. It’s lovely when I get to connect,” said Pollard. She will be performing as a band of three next week. She said she has been

adapting her band for each venue lately, which allows her to perform at even more venues. “I’ve got a smaller version of the band playing, because it’s a smaller venue,” said Pollard. “For me, it’s increased where I sing and where I play because now I can bring bigger bands to bigger venues but also smaller bands to smaller venues, so I’m actually doing more venues than

if I was just stuck with the one group.” Next Thursday’s performance is just one of the many opportunities people will have to see Pollard perform in Napanee this summer. “We’re going to be at the Waterfront Pub every Sunday until September, with the exception of three,” said Pollard. She performs 2-4 p.m. “It’s an absolute privi-

lege to come from the little town of Napanee and have all the support that we get here. Truly, it’s a fact. What a great town for supporting its artists, it amazes me,” said Pollard, grateful for all of her local support. Pollard performs at the museum at 7 p.m. Tickets are $3 each and are available at the door. For more information, visit www.countymuseum.ca or call 613-354-3027.

Good first step, more needed The Ontario Liberal government has had a hard time getting some positive attention these days. There was one proposed piece of legislation that was announced this week that we think has merit. Or, at least, it’s a step in the right direction. Indeed, the changes being proposed are long overdue. The Wynne government plans on passing a new law to reform election campaign financing, disallowing both corporations and unions from donating to political parties and capping what they’re allowed to spend on political advertising during election campaigns. It’s hard to be against this measure. Presumably, we want our political parties to operate without being beholden to (or appear to be beholden to) powerful third parties and act (and develop policy) with the best interest of Ontarians in mind. There are also new, lower limits on how much individuals can contribute to parties. While these measures are likely to be uncontroversial, another element of the Liberals’ reform package will undoubtedly raise a few eyebrows: the creation of a per-vote subsidy. Under that system, parties would get $2.26 for every vote cast for them out of the public purse. That will send up red flags. After all, it was the per-vote subsidy at the federal level that was cut back in 2008 (a move that coincidentally nearly spelled the end of the Conservative Stephen Harper government at the time). Certainly, there’s an understandable inclination to have parties drum up financial support from their party members rather than rely on public coffers. Luckily for those who hold those concerns, the per-vote subsidy could only be a temporary measure; the subsidy will go down gradually by 2022; it will then be reviewed and potentially eliminated after this ‘transitional’ period is over. But the benefit of the per-vote subsidy is this: it provides parties with the resources they need to conduct campaigns — and, despite the production of ugly and unhelpful attack ads — money is needed to conduct campaigns. This way, parties will have the cash to do just that without turning to third parties for financial backing. There is one area where the Liberals came up short, however: they forgot (or neglected) to do away with the practice of parties holding private fundraisers to swell party coffers — in these instances, well-heeled folks can pay a premium to have the ear of powerful politicians. It was this practice that got the provincial Liberals — and the federal Liberals — in some hot water of late. So there’s some progress, but clearly not enough. If the Liberals really want to get this right the first time, they’ll listen to the critics and address the shortcomings of this reform package.

Staff Picks: Just One Day Kristin Maloney, a member of the County of Lennox and Addington Libraries’ relief staff recently enjoyed a Young Adult title from the New York Times bestselling author Gayle Forman. “Just One Day is a novel complete with a charming set of characters and a Parisian backdrop all within a coming of age story that everyone can relate to,” says Kristin. “It begins by introducing us to an all-American good girl, Allyson Healey, nearing the end of high-school with a graduation present of a three-week trip to Europe. She spends her time speed travelling through the vast European countryside and bustling cities, and arrives in London on the last leg of the trip. “On a whim, and purely by chance, she meets the charismatic Willem, a Dutch actor at the end of his tour performing the Shakespearian play, Twelfth Night. Instantly, there is an undeniable spark, strong connection and attraction between the two. When fate brings them together a second time, Allyson throws away her guidelines and takes an uncharacteristic leap to follow Willem to Paris for just one day, where he offers to be her guide. Normally,

Allyson would never do such a thing as throwing caution to the wind and breaking her plans and doing something spur of the moment with a total stranger? No way, not her! However, the past few weeks of the trip were a let down and full of disappointment so when she realizes she is ready to take a step into the unknown, she surprises herself.

Catherine Coles Coles’ Notes “In all honesty, I found this book to be somewhat therapeutic,” Kristin says. “This book takes the reader on a journey and you can come out of it a different person or, at the very least, transformed by the thoughts presented here. The themes that are weaved into Just One Day include self-awareness, personal growth, letting go and the pain of losing the possibility of ‘what could have been’. These are topics that resonate with me and may as well for anyone that picks up this book. It is for this reason that we can easily relate to the struggles, emotions and trials Allyson is put through after living through one day

where she was truly able to ‘lose’ herself and come out of the experience a changed person. I think some of us are lucky enough to have already experienced something similar: our own day, week or month of self-discovery where we realized the kind of person we are meant to be, what we are meant to do and quite possibly who we are meant to love. If this hasn’t happened for you yet, I am sure this novel will make it clear that it could happen at any moment, and in any part of the world.” Kristin concludes, “It was this quote from the book that truly describes this story’s powerful message: We are born in one day. We die in one day. We can change in one day. And we can fall in love in one day. Anything can happen in just one day. I encourage you to pick up this book and read a truly unique story about a girl who meets a boy, but ends up discovering herself in the process.” You can reserve Just One Day by Gayle Forman in a variety of formats by using your library card at www.countylibrary.ca. Napanee Scouts have a busy month First Napanee Valley Scouting Group spent the last month on their big ‘Scoutrees’ fundraiser pledge sheets, which started with youth approaching their family and neighbours and spending a day at the Quinte Mall with a Scouting display collecting donations. The effort helped ensure that our youth continue to have Scouting available to them in their own community, enabling many awesome Scouting adventures they may not otherwise be exposed to. First Napanee Valley Scouts, along with several other scouting groups on our Algonquinte Scouting Area, also participated in the Algonquinte Scouting Area Scoutrees sapling plant on April 29 at the Quinte Conservation Area in Belleville. Youth, their scouters and families brought shovels and pails and spent the evening helping to reforest a section of the Conservation Area with red Pine saplings to fulfill the pledges they’ve collected.

Tax review committee got it right Mayor Marg Isbester and councillors have been fair and have a very hard job to ensure things in our Greater Napanee are not only fair, but legal. Thanks to council and the tax policy review committee for your hard work and support. Now, what are the extras you think urban is receiving? Are you saying you will never have to call the fire department or the police? That your children do not attend schools in the urban area? That you don’t come here to get your groceries, see your doctors, meet friends at coffee shops,

use the roads, hospitals, and banks? The tax differential we are talking about is only the town portion. Our county, school and the assessment of our own home, size, area we pay according to where we live. I say to our rural friends of Greater Napanee, move to town (urban) and I will assure you your first bill you will receive will be your water and sewer bill. You are welcome to come and use the sidewalks, which I must shovel in the winter. So my friends and neighbours, let’s keep our

urban/rural community prosperous and safe, and listen, attend meetings and find our for yourself what has already been confirmed through fair and proper documentations and surveys, through our professional people: Gary Scandlan, chairman of the TPRC of Watson and Associates, council, staff and the committee (three urban members and three rural members). Please keep and open mind and attend our regular council meetings. Judy Wood, Greater Napanee

Rural taxpayers getting short shrift last week’s Beaver. When amalgamation took place, we had assets that the town took over and the rural people had to pay extra for things like their community centres, schools and higher taxes. Our homes are taxed

on the same Municipal Property Assessment Corporation assessment as a house in town. We get very little police, fire or health protection. Insurance rates are sky high. I put my house up for

sale when I found out what the greedy urban people were up to. I am sorry to lump you all together but that is the way the pendulum swings. Ed Harry, Greater Napanee

The tax policy was passed by the greedy people on council. Seniors living in rural areas on a fixed income cannot afford to pay for the luxuries of the town people. Shirley Steward got it right in her letter to the editor in

Re: ‘Tax policy review committee getting it wrong’, Napanee Beaver, May 12. My husband and I have followed the tax policy situation since March 2015, when it came to our attention what really was happening in Greater Napanee. First, I want to say we need to stop this idea that we are a split rural/urban community. This is the best and safest community I would ever want to live in. Council hired a very professional and fair chairman to chair the tax policy review committee meetings. Mayor Gord Schermerhorn, Deputy-

■ Canadian Industries Ltd. announced that once a new ammonia plant comes on-line in Sarnia, its Millhaven plant could cease operating. The manager of the Millhaven plant, R.L. Stevens, told The Beaver he had been informed about the possible closure about two weeks earlier. At the same time, however, Stevens said that the company had no immediate plans to shut down the Millhaven facility. The Lambton plant, which would be located south of Sarnia, was to begin operating in the fall. ■ R.W. Macpherson, chairperson of Napanee’s Confederation Centennial celebrations, said that the events being planned would differ from the events that were held during the centennial for Napanee and L&A County a few years earlier. Macpherson said the upcoming milestone celebration “won’t resemble the one we had here in 1964 in any way. It won’t be the pattern. This is the Centennial of Confederation and it can’t be compared to what we had before.”

30 Years Ago May 21, 1986 ■ A Marlbank resident had to deal with a decidely unpleasant surprise when he had to dispose of a fire bomb thrown into his house. The Madoc OPP said that the man grabbed a Molotov cocktail that had been tossed into his basement, took it outside and threw it, causing it to explode. A rock was also thrown in the front window of the house. The man had also been beaten about the arms and legs with a baseball bat near Beaver Lake and had a 12 gauge shotgun blast a hole through a wall in his home a week earlier. ■ There was no shortage of roadside inconveniences afflicting residents of Adolphustown, and even Reeve Walter Bell wasn’t immune. Bell’s mailbox was demolished when a Canadian Armed Forces station wagon slammed into it alongside Highway 33. In a twist of coincidence, over the past few weeks, Adolphutown council had been embroiled in a controversy over some residents’ fences being destroyed by municipal trucks. The driver of the car in this instance was charged with careless driving.

The Corporation of the Town of Greater Napanee Public Notice of Intention to Amend Designation By-law No. 01-56 for the Martin and Empey Hill Cemetery

The Council of the Town of Greater Napanee intends to amend By- law No. 01-56 - a by-law to designate the Martin and Empey Hill Cemetery to be of historic value or interest, under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. O.18, adopted on September 24, 2001. The purpose of the proposed amendment is to add more detail to the heritage designation and to include pictures.

The following information is proposed to be added to By-law No. 01-56: 1. Schedule “A” of Town of Greater Napanee By-law 01-56 as Amended Legal Description: Property Assessment Roll Number: 1121-070-040-22199-0000 Part Lot 5, Concession 4, being Parts 3 and 5 on Reference Plan 29R7197, geographic Township of Richmond, known municipally as 1057 Beechwood Road, in the Town of Greater Napanee. 2. Schedule “B” of Town of Greater Napanee By-law No. 01-56 as Amended Description of Property The Martin and Empey Hill Pioneer Cemetery is a 2.2 hectare plot of land at 1057 Beechwood Road, approximately 1.7 km east of Deseronto Road in the former Township of Richmond. A 106m long unmetalled track follows a right-of-way north from Beechwood Road to give access across a field to the cemetery lot. The burial plot, approximately 23.5m by 38.5m in area, is fenced and set in a wooded area. Statement of Cultural Heritage Value The Township Of Richmond Was Settled By Families primarily from England, Ireland and Scotland. The Martin and Empey Hill Pioneer Cemetery contains grave markers for some of the early settlers of homesteads in the vicinity of Empey Hill. (i) Design and Physical Value Most of the headstones in the Martin and Empey Hill Pioneer Cemetery remain in their original locations, with placement and orientation typical of 19th century Euro-Canadian burial practices. The limestone, marble and granite grave markers are in tablet, block and obelisk form, and bear inscriptions having motifs and content representative of the period. The cemetery site is far from Beechwood Road and is secluded in a wooded area that provides a tranquil setting appropriate to the spiritual aspect of a cemetery. (ii) Historical and Associative Value The Martin and Empey Hill Pioneer Cemetery was initially the burial ground of the Solmes family, to whom the 200-acre Lot 5 was originally granted. Richard Solmes registered the patent for the Crown Grant in 1847, but the family had been on the lot for more than a decade before that date. The earliest known burial at the site took place in 1833 when Catherine Solmes, Richard's mother, was interred there. In 1853 the north part of the Lot 5 was sold to the Martin family. The south part remained in the hands of the Solmes family until 1870 when the deed for the Solmes burial plot was transferred to the trustees of the Episcopal Methodist Church, on the neighbouring Lot 6. The rest of the Solmes' Lot 5 was sold to the Martins. Prior to the establishment of the Episcopal Methodist Church, the community was served by the Wesleyan Methodist Church at Empey Hill, just to the west on Lot 1. The burial ground and both churches appear on the 1878 Illustrated Historical Atlas of the Counties of Frontenac, Lennox & Addington. Parishioners from both churches are buried in the cemetery. With the Methodist Church Union, the Episcopal Methodist Church was closed in 1884. When the church was sold in 1888 the legal use and custody of the cemetery was transferred to the Methodist Church at Empey Hill. While there remains no trace of the Episcopal Methodist Church that once stood near the cemetery, the Empey Hill United Church, which replaced the original Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1912, continues to sit atop Empey Hill, a good two kilometres from the cemetery. The last known burial in the Martin and Empey Hill Pioneer Cemetery occurred in 1907 with the internment of N. Solmes. In all, 36 tombstones mark the graves of 49 of the early settlers of Richmond Township. The cemetery also contains an unknown number of unmarked graves. The families most heavily represented in at the site are Solmes, Martin, and Spencer - all settlers on the lots surrounding the cemetery. Other families well represented in the cemetery are Brown, Forshee, Ross, Tulloch, Wittington, and Windover. The cemetery was abandoned and by 2001 it had become heavily overgrown. That summer volunteers led a team in clearing brush from the

site and several of the headstones were professionally restored. A chainlink fence was installed enclosing the plot and an arched metal overhead sign was erected at the entrance, identifying the site as the “Empey Hill Cemetery”. In September of 2001 the Martin and Empey Hill Pioneer Cemetery was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. A plaque just inside the cemetery tells the history of the cemetery, and documents the efforts taken to preserve the site. Summary: The history of the Martin and Empey Hill Pioneer Cemetery is typical of many small rural cemeteries. Its value lies in being characteristic of how such sites transition from the private use of a single family, to supporting other families in the neighbourhood, through abandonment and finally to the recognition of its significance to the broader community. The grave markers themselves give precise genealogical detail for people interred at the site and hint at some of the hardships of life for those early settlers of the region. (iii) Contextual Value As the final resting place of the Township of Richmond’s earliest residents, the grave sites of the members of these British, Irish and Scottish settlers make the Martin and Empey Hill Pioneer Cemetery a representative example of a rural pioneer cemetery. Not only does the cemetery have spiritual value as the burial site of an indeterminate number of 19th and early 20th century Euro-Canadians, but it also represents the contribution made by these early settlers to the development of Township of Richmond. Description of Heritage Attributes The cemetery's heritage attributes derive from the archaeological, built heritage, and cultural heritage landscape values associated with this 19th century Euro-Canadian pioneer cemetery. Attributes requiring protection from removal, disturbance, or unsympathetic or inappropriate alteration are listed by feature category. Archaeological Resources and Areas of Archaeological Potential: • features and artifacts related to the original organization of the cemetery • human remains contained within the cemetery • remaining sub-surface funerary artifacts Built Heritage Features: • grave markers, including limestone, marble and granite headstones and monuments in the tablet, block and obelisk styles, exhibiting a variety of size, icons, motifs and inscriptions • a layout that retains the original placement and orientation of the grave markers, representative of 19th century Euro-Canadian burial practices • a 21st century limestone pedestal supporting a plaque giving a brief history of the cemetery • a 21st century metal arched overhead entrance sign Cultural Heritage Landscape Features: • grassed areas within the cemetery • a mature tree within the cemetery • well-defined boundary markers delineating the cemetery • a site distinguished by its secluded location in a grove of trees on a slight knoll Notice of Objection Notice of an objection to the proposed by-law amendment may be served on the Town Clerk within 30 days of the date of this notice, which is June 20, 2016. The notice must set out the reason(s) for the objection and all relevant facts. More Information Further information is available from the Town Clerk’s Office. If this occurs, remove the aerator from the tap and let the water run for a few minutes, after which it should run clear. Then replace the aerator. The flushing schedule will be posted in this column throughout the season. Water Main Flushing Schedule Week

unique, one-of-a-kind performance each time. “I think looping will always be a part of what I do. I sort of try to make it an organic part of what I do because I try to do it in a way where it doesn’t call attention to the fact that I’m looping, it serves the song,” Moon said. “It’s always, first and foremost, about the song and what it needs. Sometimes it doesn’t need anything; it just needs you to play it and sing it and deliver it. But sometimes, adding in those extra

layers brings it to life. So that’s been good for me to keep looping as part of my live performance because it makes the audience sort of forget that there’s only one guy up there.” Eight months ago when Moon last performed in Napanee, he was debuting his latest CD, 20 Years: The Best of Jacob Moon. Already Moon is working on new music for another album. “I’ve been writing for the new album so I’ll be in the studio this week and next to record some stuff for a new

project,” said Moon. “It’s time for some new stuff. The last album was mostly an album of things I’d already released, with a few notable suggestions, but now it’s time to get going on some new stuff.” He said as opposed to working on music for over a year to put out an album, he is going to release his songs as they’re finished and complete the album later. “The modern way to do it is to try to release stuff as you make it. The singles are really what carries currency in social media and you can

really build more attention and get more momentum for your project along the way by releasing what you’ve written and then let it all coalesce into an album project,” Moon explained. Moon will be releasing a new single within weeks. Moon will be performing May 28 at Ellena’s Café at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Ellena’s for $20 in advance, or $25 at the door. Tickets are also available online at www.starstop.ca and at www.jacobmoon.com.

Selby P.S. holds 50th anniversary celebration BY REBA PENNELL

Special to the Beaver Selby Public School’s community spirit was on full display on Saturday for the school’s 50th anniversary celebration. Despite the rain there were still some people arriving at the school before the start time of 11 a.m. Parent council organized the special anniversary party. Money raised during the event is going towards buying more technology for the classroom. The parent council has been working towards buying iPads for the school and expanding on information technology. Children were able to enjoy games in different classrooms and the also got their faces painted. A fire truck and ambulance were located outside the front entrance, so kids could see what it was like to be a paramedic or firefighter. Snacks were provided, including cotton candy and popcorn, as well as numerous cakes that showcased

Among those sharing memories was Greater Napanee Mayor Gord Schermerhorn, who recalled his own days as a student at Selby Public School during the formal portion of the celebration. Schermerhorn talked about when he would get on the bus with his friends, play in the schoolyard, and enjoy being a part of a “tight knit community.” Schermerhorn said that this school was a part of him and it was

an honour to be able to come back and take part in the celebration. Selby first opened its doors in 1966, with the first graduating class in 19771978. The original school had just 10 classrooms and was about 13,000 square feet. Today, with multiple additions added to it, the size has almost doubled. There were only 10 staff members when the building first opened, compared to the 21 that there are now, proving that in 50 years, a lot has changed.

thing,” she said. “My brother and I, I was eight years old and he was two years older, we (made) what we called a newsletter at Christmas to tell everybody what (was happening).” She said they only produced one edition, however. Mathieson was a prolific letter-writer, corresponding regularly with a number of different ‘letter buddies.’ While she joked with a pen pal in England that the both of them should save each other’s letters and publish them as books, it never came to pass, and the letters weren’t kept. While living in Etobicoke, Mathieson got to know a freelance writer. “Finally I sat down and wrote her a note, and said, ‘I want to get into your racket, and I don’t know to do it. All I’ve got to recommend me is 50 years of non-experience.’” She arranged an interview with an editor with the Etobicoke Express; after reviewing her work, Mathieson was hired on to write a column about various community events and happenings. When summer came around, Mathieson said, it became evident she’d be unable to juggle family life and writing for the Express, so she took a temporary leave of absence. “When I came back, I discovered the paper was no more. I swear I did not cause it,” she joked. Later on in the 1990s, Mathieson was tapped to do interviews with clients with Lennox and Addington Seniors Outreach Services. “They asked me to write, to interview seniors and write

Let’s gather all of Mary’s newsletter stories and have a fundraiser.’ I think there was something like 50 by them. I had to go around and get pictures of all the people. They eventually did sell it, for $10 each.” It wasn’t until she was in her 90s that Mathieson decided to go in a different direction. “I thought, I’ve been writing stuff all my life and all of it has gone into the recycling bin. I’m going to write something that’s going to stay put, with a hard cover on it. So, that’s when I decided I was going to write a book,” she remarked. She says she’s glad she did, for a few reasons. She said that, had she delayed writing the book any longer, she probably would have been physically unable to accomplish the task. “I was 95 when the book came out… Things like memory and the ability to use your hands, even just tabbing keys, it gets to be difficult,” she said.

“I had people come to me and say, ‘That was good, why don’t you write another.’ I felt like saying, ‘You try it, see how you get along if it’s so darned easy,’” she said with a laugh. Another reason was that it led her to meet new people. “I was really amazed… it opened up a whole new world of people who like writing, and I have people dropping in on me wanting to talk about it and discuss their book or my book,” she said. Presumably, that networking with fellow authors, and readers, will continue at the author’s showcase next weekend. There’s no charge to attend. The event starts at 9 a.m. with a mix-and-mingle followed by mini author presentations starting at 10 a.m. An assortment of refreshments will be provided. The event will also feature a large sale of used books (five for $1) as a library fundraiser. Many featured authors will have their books available for sale as well (with prices set by the authors).

Hawk girls take silver in KASSAA rugby finals Regi wins league crown BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

quandered early scoring opportunities cost the NDSS Golden Hawks girls rugby team in their bid for an upset victory in Monday's KASSAA finals, as they were bested 22-5 by the top ranked Regi Panthers. Playing at Queen's Nixon Field, the Hawks had their opponents on the ropes right off the opening kick, moving the ball deep into Panther territory. Though they spent the first 10 minutes of the game knocking at the doorstep of

S

the Panthers' try-line, they just couldn't break through. That missed opportunity proved costly as when the Panthers eventually found their footing, they quickly showed why they were an undefeated powerhouse in the regular season. When the script was flipped and it was the Panthers at the Hawks' try-line, they were able to finish the job and punch in the game's first try. The Hawks came close to escaping any damage, gaining possession of the ball just in front of their tryline and booting the ball away. The Panthers quickly recovered the ball however and found open space to take the early 5-0 advantage. Showing no relent, the Panthers came roaring

back, getting the ball back into Hawks' territory. Though Regi again temporally lost control of the ball and the Hawks had another chance to clear it, a quick steal from 30 yards out lead to the game's second score and put Regi up 10-0. NDSS nearly had an answer in the final seconds of the first half, getting the ball to within inches of the corner of the Panthers' tryline. NDSS' players thought they had managed to squeak over the line before time ran out, but the officials disagreed and the Hawks entered the break down by a pair of tries. "We prided ourselves on defense all season," said Hawks head coach Sean Dunleavy.

danced in and out of trouble all game, limiting the damage with big pitches when they needed it. Michael Parr started the game for the Hawks, who had a rare opportunity to play on their 'home' field in Tyendinaga Township. After Parr allowed the first batter to reach a costly error put runners on second and third. He was an out away from escaping the jam until he surrendered a base hit to cash two runs.

Clutch kicking from the boot of NDSS’ Eli Brown was the difference in the KASSAA junior boys rugby semifinals on Monday as the Golden Hawks edged the Frontenac Falcons 1714. With the win the Hawks earned a spot in this afternoon's KASSAA finals, which are set for 2 p.m. at Queen’s University’s Nixon Field. Playing in Monday’s semifinals at Frontenac, Brown sailed both of his convert attempts through the uprights and added a penalty kick to help lead the third seeded Hawks to a comeback victory over the second seeded Falcons. Frontenac had jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and looked like they might steamroll the Hawks, much like they did in their only previous meeting, a 31-10 victory back on May 6. The Hawks defense quickly righted the ship however and shutdown the Falcons long enough for the offense to work on a comeback. Craig Luery and Brad

Seth DuChene-Staff

Craig Luery, who scored one try for NDSS in Monday’s game, rumbles through some Frontenac defenders. Baker each scored a try for the Hawks, setting up Brown’s two converts. It was the penalty kick to close out the second half that would prove to be the difference. “It was an excellent effort from everyone,” said Hawks coach Brad Melville. “It was great that it didn’t just fall on a few people. Everyone across the board played well. That’s what we needed to win (on Monday) and they did it. I was very pleased.” “We had a lot of guys that had never played before,” added Melville. “For

them to pick it up so quickly and be rewarded for this effort, it’s great.” Napanee will now turn it's attention to the Regi Panthers, who they’ll meet in this afternoon’s finals. The Panthers were a perfect 4-0 on the year, though the Hawks were probably the team that gave them the most trouble in the regular season. NDSS held them out of try-zone, allowing just a penalty kick in a 3-0 loss back on April 29. Regi advances to the finals after just squeaking by La Salle 24-19 in their semifinal

match. “They’re a really strong team, we know that,” Melville said of the Panthers. “They have excellent forwards. As we did (Monday) we need everyone to be at their best for us to stay close to them. We know that and we will do our best, show up on the day and throw everything we’ve got at them.” Unfortunately for Napanee there will be only one their teams in the finals as the seniors were ousted in the semifinals, losing 32-15 in the semifinals.

Mavs pick up first win Beaver Sports

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 18 The Hawks came close to answering right back in the bottom half of the inning as they loaded the bases. They were unable to deliver the key hit with ducks on the pond however, which would quickly become the theme of the afternoon. Parr settled in after the first and was dealing over his final three innings, including a five pitch, 1-2-3 inning in the third. The Hawks bats finally broke through in the fourth as Jason McCracken and Riley Manion smashed back-to-back RBI doubled to knot the game at 2-2. Seth Barton, who had reached base ahead of McCracken, scored the first run. Manion’s hit was smoked into the gap and had insidethe-park-home-run potential, but it skipped under a hole in the outfield fence. As per the ground rules agreed upon before the game, any ball that rolled under the fence would be deemed an automatic double. He would be stranded at third. McCracken came on to pitch the final three innings and picked up where Parr left off with a strong performance of his own. The game remained tied until the top of the sixth when a wild pitch allowed the Golden Eagles to score the go ahead run, which would turn out to be the game winner. In the bottom of the

Adam Prudhomme-Staff

inning McCracken got things started with a drag bunt single. After a stolen base, Manion delivered another base hit. McCracken attempted to score on the play, forcing the Golden Eagles to make a perfect relay throw from the outfield. He would be called out on a bang-bang play. “We certainly had lots of hits, just not timely hits,” said Hawks head coach Daryl Sheffield, referencing the fact that NDSS had runners on base every single inning. “A bit of bad luck with a ball in left centre with the ball going under the fence. But it was an entertaining game, it was fun.” Sheffield was particularly pleased with his team’s

CARDS OF THANKS

To family, friends and all that showed concern: Thank you so much for offering your emotional support, love and concern after my recent health issue. Although I wasn’t always aware of what was going on, I know there were some dramatic ups and downs, but with your encouragement, prayers and kindness Jerry and I found the strength to make it through. Health is often taken for granted, but after this recent scare, I know that life is a gift that can be taken away anytime. The cards, wishes, visits, meals and prayers have made us realize how very lucky we are to have each one of you in our lives. Thank you again for everything. We are proud to be a part of this community that cares. Love, from the bottom of our hearts, Judy and Jerry Joyce.

Thursday, May 19, 2016 MEMORIAMS

WOOD - In loving memory of a dear wife and mother, Glenda, who passed away May 21, 2010. God knew that she was suffering, That the hills were hard to climb, So He closed her weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine”. Away in the beautiful hills of God, By the valley of rest so fair, Some day, we know not when, We will meet our loved one there. The world changes year to year And friends from day to day, But never will the one I love From memory pass away. Lovingly remembered by husband Duane and daughter Kelly.

A limb has fallen from the family tree. I keep hearing a voice that says, "Grieve not for me". Remember the best times, the laughter, the song. The good life I lived while I was strong. Continue my heritage, I'm counting on you. Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through. My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest. Remembering all, how I truly was blessed. Continue traditions, no matter how small. Go on with your life, don't worry about falls. I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin. Until the day comes we're together again.

RUGBY | Hawks to play EOSSAA next week in Arnprior CONTINUED FROM PAGE 18 “We held them through the break down and around midfield, but (Regi) was just able to punch a couple of those wide ones and you could see their experience.” After the break the Panthers continued to pressure, scoring a quick try to build a 15-0 lead. That seemed to fire up the Hawks a bit as they went on to control the ball for much of the second half from there. After a couple of close calls, Hawks captain Erika Barton was finally able to break through, bulldozing through three Regi defenders to cross the line. It was just the fourth try the Panthers had allowed all season. Though they continued to threaten to add more, the

Hawks would be held to just the one try. The Panthers put a nice bow of their victory with a late try, followed by the only successful convert of the game to round out the scoring at 22-5 to lock up the KASSAA tittle. “It’ll be great learning for us,” Dunleavy said after the game. “Really it was 10nil at half, arguably 10-5 at half, (the play at the try-line at the close of the first half) was a challenging one for the officials to have to have to decide on so fair play to them. We come back and get a try in there and things look interesting. You could see the experience coming through (for the NDSS players). You can’t question the heart, they never laid down, lots of great contact and tackling. They learned a ton which was great.”

NDSS’ play in the second half in particular was encouraging for the coach. Despite being down against a good team, the Hawks continued to battle and kept it an interesting game. “We controlled a lot of play, it was just those little moments, maybe two or three sequences, and maybe a pass that could have been held onto, maybe a hiccup here,” said Dunleavy. “A good team will punish you for those turnovers and that's what happened. We’d knock it on and (Regi) would be down the field. But for a mostly Grade 10 team, with a few Grade 11 and 12s, it’s all good learning for us.” Dunleavy said even just reaching the finals was an accomplishment for the young team, which they achieved on Friday when

they knocked off the second seeded La Salle Black Knights 12-0 in the semifinals. They had set the goal of reaching the finals back in the pre-season and were hoping to build back to their ‘dynasty days’, which ran for much of the last half of the previous decade. In years passed, a loss in the KASSAA finals would have meant the end of the season for the girls. This year however, by virtue of reaching the finals and being classified as an AA school, they will now have the opportunity to compete in a four-team Eastern Ontario high school championship tournament, to be held next Tuesday in Arnprior. That tournament will wrap up their season.

Board Members Wanted Family and Children’s Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington is looking to recruit new members of the Board of Directors. We are a Children’s Aid Society – a not-for-profit agency that protects children from abuse and neglect. We receive funding and our mandate from the Government of Ontario. We’ve been serving this community since 1894, making us one of the oldest continuing charities in Southeastern Ontario. Every family needs help. We’re there when families can’t cope. We support them, and help them stay together. Sometimes, children come into our care. When that happens, we try to reunite them with their birth family or with their extended family. In some cases, children can’t go back. We take care of them through foster care and try to find them a new permanent family through adoption. The role of a Board Member is critical to the work we do. The Board of Directors provides high-level leadership and governance for the Agency by providing oversight of the Agency’s operations, performance and outcomes.

What we are looking for The Agency strives to have a broad mix of skills, experience and demographic characteristics on the Board. At this time we have identified the need for Board Members who fit one or more of the following criteria: 1. Residents of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington outside of Kingston 2. Visible minorities 3. Experience in Accounting All applications are welcome – you may still apply even if you do not meet these criteria.
